Audiodrama Sunday 4/7/2024

Lots of stuff to listen to this week. I really need to stop starting these writeups at 11:30pm on Sunday evening.

Loved the new Dear Liisphyra this week. I thought that the sponsor for this episode was really funny. I laughed out loud and looked like to an insane person to some guy I was walking past when they said that every weapon box comes with 50 feet of hempen rope.

Season 2 finale of @backagainpodcast! Man I love the themes of this show. It's such a well written tragedy, the dramatic irony is so good. Also I desperately want to know more about the other Soldier. We know several very relevant details about him but very little else.

New @spoutlore-blog was fun. Billie is such a good character, Jessica plays the "immortal child" trope so well. This show really puts the coolest worldbuilding you've ever heard with the dumbest dick jokes in existence. I still haven't gotten over the spider and the hummingbird.

Speaking of Spout Lore, the new Rude Tales of Magic episode has Abdul Aziz as a guest. He was a great guest, his style of humor fits perfectly with the setting of Piss Harbor. Are all the characters he plays street rats with a heart of gold. Excited to see who they bring on as guests in the future. They had Zac Oyama a few episodes ago, I would be excited to see more Dimension 20 people.

The new @midstpodcast was super interesting! Every episode in this season they've introduced another way that the Trust is incredibly fucked up. Why can't we go back to the Mother's Merciful, they were so nice.

Somehow I fell behind on @storiesfromylelmore. I'm not sure how that happened, I think my podcatcher didn't update or something, because I've been listening to new episodes of this show immediately. The second most recent episode was great, with Rion going through werewolf puberty. The most recent episode had some really good character work, with character development for all 3 main characters. I love this show so much.

New episode of SCP: Find Us Alive. A new Dash Two being created is really interesting, we've only had Dumptruck and Hiway Robbery for so long it's weird for there to be a third one. Where did they even get a bird?

I reached the crossover with Forgive Me in @kingmakerpod. Forgive Me is such a grounded show, especially by audiodrama standards, which tend to be way out there, so it's so funny when they cross over with shows that have such a wildly different tone and premise. The character interactions were on point though.

@camlannpod the fairy world! This show continues to have really cool takes on myths. The idea that you can shed a Name simply by going by something else is interesting. Could some random person start going by Lancelot and gain magical powers? The reveal at the end was great too, both from a worldbuilding standpoint and a character perspective.

Man that really was a lot. Lots of stuff to look forward to next week as well!

They also feature film costumes and props from Mirror Mirror (2012), The Labyrinth (1986), Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), etc.

FibS lays down the facts: April o' Neil

I'm so fuggin' tired of hearing morons drool out their mouths over this so here's all you need to know:

It's perfectly fine that Rise April is black.

April o'Neil has been portrayed as black before Rise.

April o'Neil was not "originally black" in the Mirage comics.

Rise did not make April black for woke points. Rise makes numerous changes to Turtles orthodoxy so that it isn't a boring repeat of the more traditional 2012 cartoon that immediately preceded it.

(EDIT: Many of the comic scans from this blog post, as well as some of its information, are from this blogspot post from 2018. I neglected to mention this earlier, but at least one person is asking. Unfortunately, people who reblog this post from earlier versions will not see this edit.)

The original creators of TMNT are Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Laird has always considered April o'Neil to be white other than considering possibly making her Asian in early notes; the confusion over April's race is solely due to Eastman.

In her earliest appearances, April o'Neil conveniently stands right next to known definitely-black character Baxter Stockman:

This April is as white as the Mousers and the lab walls and doesn't have curly hair. If anything she looks like Sigourney Weaver (Dutch, English, Scots-Irish, Scottish), right down to Ellen Ripley's outfit.

Since Alien came out in 1979 and Ellen Ripley is a massive influence on female lead characters even decades later, this resemblance might be intentional.

But Kevin Eastman, who has a habit of designing female characters based on the woman he is seeing at the time, redesigned April two issues or so later based (rather loosely) on his at-the-time girlfriend April Fisher (she has since passed away.)

April Fisher was, as a matter of fact, mixed-race.

Eastman later clarified that April Fisher was, of course, the source of April o'Neil's given name the entire time. (And I would like to point out that the surname of o'Neil doesn't preclude someone from being black.)

But being named after or inspired by a mixed-race person the creator knows does not mean the character is mixed-race, any more than the numerous My Little Ponies based on real people share those people's races (as opposed to being cartoon horse fairies or whatnot.)

April o'Neil specifically states that she got her hair done. That is to say, she got a perm.

Since black women's hair is already very curly, black women get perms to straighten their hair. April got hers to curl her hair - because she's not black, she's a white lady trying to look like a bootleg Paula Abdul (Syrian).

Or, quite frankly, any other 1980s pop star?

Because, y'see, now's a great time to point something out that Twitter & Tumblr seem to hope you'll forget:

The entire 1980s.

I'm pretty sure nobody who cares whether April o'Neil is black or not knows who Paula Abdul is, except maybe that she was a judge on American Idol. Paula herself might be a year or two late for April's redesign to reference her specifically, but April o'Neil looks like any random white woman from the 1980s. Because the Mirage comics were released in the 1980s. They take place in 1980s New York. And damn near every single white woman in the 1980s got a perm at some time or another.

I doubt these black April fanatics recognize half of them:

Even the men got them!!

And eventually, around the time everybody else was over it, the exact same April o'Neil in the exact same continuity lost the perm:

Remember what Eastman said about April's "different looks"? Even in the same damn comic they can't draw her consistently. April here not only looks nothing like Paula Abdul April, but nothing like Ellen Ripley April either. Hell, she looks like a JoJo character.

And there are some panels were Paula Abdul April is shaded darker than in others, which you could take as April being black if you literally ignore the entire rest of the comic and pretend that's the only time she was ever drawn:

You know, like how people pretend Princess Daisy was "originally black" because she was sliiiightly darker in Mario Tennis than usualy, including ignoring that there are earlier illustrations where she is more pale?

A perm and a tan doesn't make you black. That'd be, y'know, blackface. Not like T&T actually knows what that means either, since they think a white person posting an image with a black person in it counts as it.

Don't you think the fact April looks like four different people in the same fucking comic should convince us that we can't deduce her race from interpreting the illustrations and instead, we should, I dunno, recognize that every single time April has appeared in color with Laird and Eastman's oversight, she's been clearly white?

As opposed to that one comic everybody likes to cite, which is a non-canon guest comic by Mark Bode that changes such details as the city it takes place in and April's job, which was originally published in black and white, whose black April was colored that way by another guest artist (Bill Fitts) and looks like a disco queen stereotype which I could've sworn T&T hated, and which was later corrected to a white April when republished:

We really shouldn't listen to uneducated narcissists who want to have their cake and eat it too, don't know who Cyndi Lauper is, and already had their conclusion ready before they looked at any of the evidence, blatantly misinforming us about the world's most inconsistent comic and pretending 98% of that comic and one of the most important decades in modern human culture just never fucking happened.

New Origin of the Pixies chapter today!

Chapter 40 - “Inner Workings”

H.P. and associates visit the (very disorganized) Fire Temple catacombs and the Breath Temple's healing pools as they prepare to reverse engineer immortality. Sanderson faces another reminder of his mortal existence, Binky grows increasingly possessive of Jorgen, and H.P. and Anti-Bryndin start building a machine.

Summer of the Running Yale - Spring of the Crisp Whirlwind

A few days after the Seven Festivals wrapped up in Anti-Fairy World, High Count Anti-Bryndin came to see me. He brought Anti-Florensa with him, partly because she had family in Shadeblink and partly because she was his personal bodyguard and he was allowed to do that. Also, apparently she visits the Fire Temple every Saturday and has been doing this for a hundred thousand years or something, so I wasn't going to be the one to tell her "Nope."

We'd made arrangements with all the right people to ensure the travel validity checked out, but it didn't stop the Keepers from sending Adelinda's son, Jorgen von Strangle, right on his heels. Jorgen even had an escort of his own, but… I'll get back to that thought in a minute.

My visitors met me and Sanderson at the tram station on my border. Anti-Bryndin had tied his signature black scarf around his neck as usual, the beryl button gleaming, though he'd bundled it up in a way that covered his mouth and part of his nose. Between the scarf and his dark blue coat, he looked quite cozy despite the nippy teeth of Fairy World's slithering springtime wind. Actually, with his horns sticking out, he looked like he could pass as one of Santa's rain deer. I think he did that once, one year. He strung lights between the points.

Jorgen had bulked up in recent millennia, which finally granted him the appearance of someone who deserved to hold the massive star-tipped staff he'd been toting around for as long as I'd known him in the news. His pureblood heritage was undeniable in his staggering height. Still, youthful acne peppered his face like stars. His fluorescent orange escort vest didn't do him any favors. Ah, upper school days… That time of life makes twits of us all. I regarded him coolly, my hands folded behind my back. Technically, it's rude to tell a von Strangle they've "come into their adult wings." They slice theirs off while still young to signal utter devotion to the Fairy Elder.

"It's bold of you to come here right as your pheromones are showing potential," I'd have liked to tell him then. But I didn't. And that's because of the next member in our traveling party.

Bancroft "Binky" Abdul (Jr.) was a half-elf that I'd always known secondhand. I attended upper school with his father, and Abdul Sr. used to visit the Nightbloom family when I butlered for them Earthside. Their daughter became his wife only a dozen years after I began working there. It's actually because of that marriage that Cattahan moved out and I handed in my resignation to follow him to softer clouds. Or "greener pastures," as we said on Earth.

(Well. There was his sister's marriage, and Cattahan's parents cut him off after the whole, you know, "No counterpart consent, no forced honey-lock" protest thing, but the media has covered that spicy topic extensively and I digress.)

His sister did introduce us to each of the two Abdul sons after they were born, so the one who turned out to be a gyne had been on my radar for quite some time. I literally held him in my hands before his freckles even showed. So, suffice to say that I'd come to know Abdul Sr. quite well… from a distance, and usually several rooms apart. Cattahan always said he admired both my sassy remarks in private and my restraint in the presence of company, but he knew better than to let Abdul and I linger too long in the same room. Since he lived Earthside, I kept a closer tab on that drake than I did on gynes like Waterberry, Reddinski, and Cracklewings, but I'm far more acquainted with the father than the sons.

Jorgen and Abdul Jr. made for a peculiar pair. They lived two streets apart, yet I swear half of Fairy World knew what was going on between them. And the half that didn't was probably just being polite. From what I'd heard, the two fairies met in their younger years when both signed up for the border escort program for completely different reasons: Jorgen because he bored easily and would throw himself at any opportunity for structured work and tight deadlines, and Abdul because he genuinely liked getting to know Anti-Fairy travelers and visiting their temples alongside them. Jorgen had a sister, too. They get along well now, but in their younger years, he was scrawny and she was a wildcat. He needed a reason to get away.

And, well… Abdul Jr. never had been good with managing money. I'd seen evidence of that myself. Sometimes when I went into Faeheim, I saw him disappear down little streets, selling gemstones and bracelets in pawn shops and borrowing more than he could afford. He'd even tried to scrape a little cash off me in his younger years when I only had a few pixies to my name.

I suppose I can't blame him if he saw the need to compensate for "something." As gynes go, he'd always been a small one (though he did boast a heavy dusting of freckles on his cheeks and arms). I never did confirm why, though I assume being born and raised on Earth and its thin energy field instead of in the cloudlands will do that to a kid. Jorgen was actually the younger of the duo, though if you knew nothing about them beyond their looks, you probably wouldn't guess it. He still dwarfs Abdul completely to this day… which made their arrangement all the more eye-catching to those people - yours truly included - who were in the know.

Jorgen von Strangle is a drone. This is well-documented public knowledge in Fairy World today, so I'm not breaking Canterbury v. Oakwing in stating it, though I will point out he hadn't come out about it at the time. With his father barking orders to the Fairy militia every hour of the day and his mother constantly at the Fairy Elder's side, Jorgen was regularly cooped at home alone and unattended, and it was only after puberty that he realized what he was at all.

I took time to watch the first season of “Narrative Telephone”

What a good idea. What a simple yet good idea. What a wonderful execution. Do we deserve Creative Director Marisha Ray ? I'm pretty sure we don't ; and yet, she has graced the world with amazing things like Narrative Telephone.

Under the cut is a summary of each episode. But really all you need to know is that every second in pure serotonin injected in your veins.

Episode 1, aka "The Wolf Had A Beak" : Ashley is SO BAD at this game. Like, so, SO BAD. But it does not matter, because at the same time she is EXCELLENT at making me laugh. Every time it was her turn in each episode, I was laughing for 5 minutes straight. Sam is chaos, but we knew that already, also he was drinking Martini so that explains it. Travis is just facts straight, and efficiency. I was wondering if maybe initially, they just wanted to see together the original story and the final story, in the "Show & Tell" segment. But if so, the allure of rewatching every recounting was too good, and I'm glad they extended the format.

Episode 2, aka "Way Too Many Details About Directions And SINGING ??" : Liam's Jester's accent was pretty good at the beginning but derailed greatly. The story went longer and longer, and I think at the end it was 4 times longer than the way Laura told it. Marisha was trying to make sense of the story live, but only managed to confuse it MORE. Ashley just abandoned the accent. I love how Laura just accused Sam to "add shit up", and he took this indignant look, like she was NOT saying the truth. Liam : "She's doing War and Peace in two minutes !!". Sam the a capella lover realizing live HE FORGOT THE SONG. Matt was fighting with himself with the geography of Wildemount. Marisha didn't know what "shtuping" meant because surprisingly there's not a lot of Yiddish in Kentucky.

Episode 3, aka "Sam Gets Revenge For The Song He Forgot Last Episode" : Travis started translating the story with a 21th century narration, and Ashley finished the job. Liam was thinking about Paula Abdul (which, fair). Laura added a threesome, which is... in character for her. Marisha added a whole 'nother song. The cast takes 2 minutes to roast Sam on his lockdown look ("is this your mugshot ?", "were you in Requiem for a Dream ?"). Ashley : "You play guitar ???" Sam, who did 2 false starts : "Clearly, No." Everyone does NOT know what a pince-nez is (except Sam). True love is a threesome that lasts for years.

Episode 4, aka "nom nom nom" : Marisha did her famous not-at-all-German accent. "Oh God, I'm Ashley-ing this so hard !" (I love a good Community reference). No joke though, the original story was pretty good, it resembled the true version of the European fairy tales we grew up with (you know the versions with death and pain and misery). Travis was so taken by how cute his wife looked that he forgot part of the story. Matt was very critical of how the 3 children just waited for their fate. Laura's excited that her hair is long enough that she can do the Ring girl, and demonstrates live, while her husband hides his face. Later, Sam's wife does amazing puppetry of the Ring girl behind him just to get Travis, and it works so well ! Matt just knows Liam well enough that he brought back some spooky elements the other forgot. We learn that Marisha learned German in high-school from a teacher that was Spanish... That explains SO MUCH about her accent.

Episode 5, aka "Ashley Incites The Cast To Turn on Each Other" : Marisha wore a nice orange top with little green monsters on it and I want it. When it's Ashley telling the initial story, it goes pretty well !... no, never mind, Laura added way too much at the end. I love that at first it was just a thing Ashley put at the end of her story, and then it got to "Matt said that Travis forgot something", and "There was a miscommunication about food between Matt and Marisha", and "It was obviously Sam's fault since he's an agent of chaos". Sam apparently thinks that Pike is a Valley girl doing a Periscope. It's A JOY to see everyone in the cast just fall back in love with Ashley Johnson as Pike for 2 minutes. Ashley : "We're just getting better !" The rest of the cast : *doubt*. Sam, looking at how LONG Laura's video is "Is there an intermission in this ??" then everyone takes a turn roasting every aspect of Sam's video. Marisha and apparently everyone, when they see Ashley looking cute as a button as Pike : "This is what I want to see when I die."

Episode 6, aka "BOUNDARIES" : Matt, who was after Taliesin, closed his eyes just like he did, and just told the rest of the story like that : MIND PALACE. Love that Marisha wore her rainbow suspenders for the Show & Tell, bringing back Beau's spirit. Sam summarizing Narrative Telephone : "Listen, this show is about blame." I love how everyone compliments Ashley on how beautiful she looks, and as soon as she starts talking as her version of Beau, everyone's like "oh no, this is Pool Hall Ashley". Everyone was just liberating their inner frat boys for this one.

Episode 7, aka "Everybody Hates Taliesin" : when panicking, Laura elongates time, except when she just bails and accelerates. I feel like this story was the hardest, and Laura and Liam's nervous energies made it worse. But Sam and Travis did an impressive job of reeling it back in. And then Marisha and Ashley re-made it worse. And then Matt reeled it back in but at this point it was too late. The point of this story ? "It's about higher consciousness and apparently fucking ditching your siblings in the middle of the forest". During the Show & Tell, I love Matt just doing the wild Kermit flailing his arms up in the background. At one point Sam's daughter comes in his room and says goodnight to the dog that is on Sam's lap and it's SO CUTE. Sam, commenting on Marisha's looks : "You're fucking... Stunner ! How do you do that ???" Marisha, uncomfortable with compliments : "... Stop it." Travis, immediately supportive : "You look like shit." Marisha, earnest : "Thank you !"

Episode 8, aka "The Cameo Of Macaroni Samsonite My Beloved" : I feel like Marisha following Travis was the best choice ever, because of the BrJeaus. I appreciate seeing in Taliesin's background the puppet of Bast'Alar, aka The Ascended One, aka Mittens McFluffyfloof. ASHLEY ?? GROG STONEJAW ??? Laura just bailing out of the end is so good for the season finale. Travis just messing with the rest of the cast who expects an elaborate story with complicated words, but no !! He improvised everything live, and just did a silly voice. The others : "There was a story ?? There was a concept ?????" Poor Marisha, she has a naturally low voice (which I'm NOT complaining about) and she can't do the Macaroni Samsonite voice. Sam had a bugger up his nose and it was all everyone could see, including him. Taliesin accidentally recorded himself in slow-mo and they put it after the end credits. I think this one was the hardest I laughed.

Minerva has a special ability known as Angel's heart. Angel's heart grants the ability to be immune to any form of damage and it can revive the recently departed. Her second ability, Enlighted sense, has the ability to grant her the ability to give see through another person's view. Example she has the ability to see through her owl familiar which has night vision and can see through objects. Her third ability, testimonial memory, allows her to see memories of a person or area. The best way to describe it as the stand California king bed without the weaknesses and activation requirements. The ability to steal someones memory from a person looks like this.

The chess piece contains someone's memory. She can steal it and see through it. She break the chess piece and that memory disappears forever. She has no limitations on her ability to see or steal memories as long as she knows about them. She can also project the memory if she wanted. The way she does it is by a projector type of thing. Example she can use her familiar's ability to project it. The owl eyes glow and the memory is projected on a flat object. The ability to find the memories of a house. For example their is a room where someone was murdered. She sees what happened in a third person view. She sees the murder, if the killer is wearing a mask. She can follow the projection until that person unmasked themselves. She can close her eyes and wakes up. She can also allow other people to see it and people she allows can see where they see it from her point of view. Note she is invincible while she is in that state. She did not come alone. She was joined by the solfachord fairies, the gusto tribe and the blackwing tribes that is going to be later because Tumblr picture limit. To describe how the each tribe acts. The solfachords are named after a musical notes. They are very cheerful and all have an ability to use the power of music as a weapon. They can make the the lyrics of songs as weapons the magnitude works better the higher older they are. Ex. They use the ability to the song cold hearted by Paula abdul. The effect would be the person would to turn in to a snake and have their heart frozen basically frozen and killing them. This effect of turning them into a snake and killing them only happens if the person is or was male due to the song lyrics. The effect works on multiple people based on how many people are playing or dancing the song. The gusto tribe has powerful protectors that have the ability to send the entire nation of liyue into the air and flipping it. The blackwings are all have guns and rifles that can level the entire city of mondstadt in to nothing. I will do by order of introduction.

Oldest daughter of Cosmo and Wanda, Granddaughter of Miguel, Yolonda, Linnie, and Nora, and older sister of Poof. Also the niece of Darren, Chelsea, and Blonda, and the cousin of Julie.

Unknown adult height

Has long straight, green hair and matching eyes. Also wears a pink headband with a star on the side, a blue t-shirt, black skirt, and black ballet flats.

Does well in school, except she finds history of Fairy World and other realms rather dull

Best friend is Bongo Abdul, the son of Binky, as he' the only one that's nice to her as school.

Socially awkward

Can be sarcastic, often seeing the faults in other people's reasoning.

Has trouble coping with her parents after the miscarriage.

Wanda pressures Cassia to be a godparent so she doesn't end up as entitled as her sister, yelling at her whenever she disagrees.

Cut contact with her parents slowly over time after moving out.

Is pretty successful as an Author, and lives in a very nice, contemporary style house on the outskirts of Fairy World, away from everyone. She really only talks to Poof and Bongo still.

The High Costs of Being Precocious:

By all accounts, Howard P. Lovecraft was a smart little child.

He recited full poems from memory at 2 years old. And, was able to read around 3. He even wrote letters, to his (business traveling) grandpa Whipple, by age 6.

Howard was read from the Bible & introduced to Santa Claus at 2. And he had no problems with this - until he was around 5...

Weird fact: When Howard was 3, Scott (HPL's dad) suffered a mental attack while in Chicago! He was moved into Butler Asylum in Providence & Howard never saw him again. He was only told that his father was in a comatose state.

It turned out that Scott had been acting strangely - for about a year before the attack...

Now, grandpa Whipple liked to make up & tell young Howard nightly ghost tales. Sarah, HPL's mom, worried that this might upset Howard - and it did. When he was 6...

Then, just before Howard's 5th birth day, he was told that Santa was only a myth. To which he responded, "This must mean that God himself is also a myth!"

Weird Fact: Strangely enough for a horror writer, around 5 years old, Howard favored "A 1,000 & 1 Nights" over "Grimm's Fairy Tales!"

Howard even created the playful persona of Abdul Alhazred at this time. Later in life, Abdul would be literally recycled - as the writer of the dreaded Necronomicon!

At 6, Howard lost his grandma -& he started to have nightmares! He had night terrors, dreaming that faceless monsters were chasing him!!

All of this because Howard's mom & aunts wore black clothing for a year - after his grandma's funeral.

He must have connected the color with death & the black clothing's duration. Then, he must have dreaded who was next?!

Anyway, Whipple came to Howard's rescue - by having Howard walk thru darkened rooms. In this way, HPL came to understand that there was nothing to fear - in the dark...

Howard would later reuse these dream beings in his works, calling them nightgaunts - flying creatures with no faces!!
