Short version: They are perfect counterparts. They are the same where it matters, but opposites in a way where they can complete each other and mellow out each other's worst traits. They also bicker like an old married couple and I love it-

Long Version: Them calling each other their "insufferable counterpart" is still from old roleplays I did ages ago (I was roleplaying as Nef) and it still makes my shipper heart weak. It's so perfect for them as it doesn't only show off their constant affectionate bickering but also pretty much spells out the appeal of the ship: they are counterparts that perfectly complete each other from personality to fighting style.

They are the same where it matters: fighting for the same goal, serving the same gods, both highly intelligent and capable, equals in rank and competence.

But opposites where they can complete each other and mellow out each other's worst traits. Baron is usually a stick in the mud, but Nef makes him loosen up and be more sociable. He's able to relax and laugh with him. Meanwhile, Baron makes Nef chill out on the being-an-evil-little-shit aspect of his personality. He isn't as needlessly cruel and does show mercy (usually in form of a quick kill) when Baron is around. While he revels in the cruelty of war he knows the things they have to do burden Baron more than he lets on. So he'd rather take over the dirty work and let Barontake the role of the honourable, brave general he was always meant to be. He does love that about Baron after all, his honour. It's such a rare thing in the upper echelons of the church filled with socialites that neither Nefarian nor Mevolent truly trust. But Baron? You can trust him, you can rely on him and Nefarian appreciates such a rare quality that of course must be fully indulge in, that lovely man is his now-

Baron is a little too trusting of his fellow zealots *coughdiableriecough*, but Nef makes up for it by being twice as distrusting. No one dares backstab Baron while Nef is there, and if they try anyway, Nef will teach them a lesson before they get anywhere close to Baron. Meanwhile, Nef is getting emotional support from Baron he can't get anywhere else. He's probably the only one around who cares about him and his well-being. Enough so to try and softly guide him away from his bad habits: alcohol, sex, cigarettes and overworking. Baron is Nef's rock in the storm and the healthiest relationship he can have even if it's not the healthiest Baron can have. He knows Baron deserves better than him, but Nef has always been a selfish man...

On the battlefield, Baron is one of the strongest fighter, a skilled and incredible fast swordsman. Since Nef is a glass canon and relies heavily on magic, I headcanon he prefers ranged attacks. Fighting them together must be an impossible task (think Ornstein and Smough from Dark Souls).

But since I love the drama™ how they went from rivals to soulmates it the most interesting part to me.

Nef took an interest in Baron first. He knew him through his friendship with China, Baron's boss, and thought him to be quite physically attractive, but grew intrigued about him when China told him about his personality and found out that he and Eliza had been dating. Nef gathers intel about everyone who rises to the upper ranks but it's rare for him to be fascinated by a specimen.

Meanwhile, Baron absolutely despised Nef. He didn't like that a convert was Mev's right-hand man, especially one that didn't seem particularly pious. Someone of old blood, someone of Baron's own heritage would be a much better fit for that position. Add to that that he's in the beginning still in denial about being gay yet out of all people he ends up being attracted to Nefarian. As if it wasn't bad enough that Nef is quite an attractive man, he also thought it was absolutely hilarious to flirt and tease Baron every chance he got. And that was driving Baron mad in more ways than one.

Essentially their relationship went from rivals to Nef teasing Baron until it ends in hatefucking, Baron slowly realising that Nef actually has feelings for him and isn't just using him to get off and finally (when Baron becomes the second general) learning to appreciate each other when Baron realizes Nef is just as devoted as him and him 'slacking off' is the result of Mev completely over working Nef.

Milo can cook food. Most of it is rustic and old age recipes. They only cook at home though and they have a garden to give them food.

Despite the fact Milo does not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep, they do these things anyway because they can and it is a fun experience.

The reaper is a nerd, especially about botany and arcane botany. They have a specialization in necrobotany but won't mention why or how they got into the hobby.

They have a personal collection of broken souls in their home that they take care of. Many are separated soulmates that they bring back together before passing on into the next stage beyond death.

Having eons to practice the forms of art, Milo doesn't use a scythe, but a fauchard instead. This is hardly ever used during work but on the very rare occasion it is. Sometimes the dead don't want to be that way and put up a bit of a fight.

Milo knows what every form of dying feels like, and gets metaphysical updates whenever a new one is invented. The reaction is similar to jolting awake from a dream right before you hit the ground.

Speaking of dying, Milo can technically kill someone but in terms of work, is not allowed to. The consequence is feeling that instance of death ten told ten times worse. There are specific situations where Milo considers this consequence worth it.

Milo was not always Milo and had to find themselves after the scarring incident that left them with Atrophic. Their identity came well after their conceived existence and they refuse to let it go.

That being said, Milo and their Atrophic state aren't considered the same entity, despite evidence of the contrary. Milo refuses to acknowledge Atrophic as something they still are.

Milo does regularly go to therapy to keep their mental health up. Oddly enough all their friends refuse to go to therapy and still speak to them about their problems.

Asier is the third True Singularity of Death and unlike other reapers, has three mantles. No one remembers the others outside of the fact they existed, only because Asier has those mantles.

She does not eat food outside of acting and spy jobs. The most food she consumes on the regular is tea and wine.

She can traverse any universal plane at will and can even move to other universes within her jurisdiction to make sure they are kept at some kind of balanced level. There is no such thing as a perfect balance.

Asier's average sleep comes up to five hours every seven years. She just simply has too much energy to be tired. When she is tired enough to sleep, it's a huge relief.

Inventing soulweave magic allows Asier to be the only reaper to be able to remove a soul out of a vessel without slaying the owner. As such she is also the only reaper who can destroy them instantly, no matter what from.

Asier Amaia is a Basque name translating to 'the beginning of the end'.

Her meetings are sometimes jokingly referred to as AA Meetings because Asier is the worst workaholic you will find in the known universes.

She still uses quill and ink pen despite being well versed in modern writing utensils. She has an appreciation for the old ways.

When a reaper ceases to exist, as they can't die, all memory and influence of them ceases to be as well. Asier is working on a method of magic to prevent this and let the memories continue to exist, so that reapers can 'die' in their own way.

She only has her claws most prominent when she is wearing her gloves. When she isn't, Asier has sharp nails that can change into claws, but only at her whim.

Cassidy watched the woman seated across from him from under the brim of his hat; for all appearances, he’d tugged his hat down over his face and fell asleep. She looked small and frail, fingers clutching tightly at the serape he’d wrapped around her hours earlier - but it was her face that truly gave her away. Pure grief clouded her eyes as she stared down at her lap. It was the saddest he’d ever seen anyone, and he had seen a lot of sad people - usually right after he’d killed someone they knew. Maybe she had known someone on that strike team? Cassidy was tempted to reach out and try to comfort her, or at least make her hands relax because they sure looked like they hurt, but he doubted she would want that from him - or from anyone, if rumors were to be believed. He’d never talked to her before, though he’d heard of her and might have passed her once or twice in a hallway. Doctor Angela Ziegler, the only person he’d ever met in over twenty years whose last name started with a ‘Z’. She was also the only person he’d ever met whose initials matched the ink on his left ankle - AZ. He wondered if she was his match in some way. Jesse was pretty sure he’d figured out one set - AA, for Ana Amari, a woman who couldn’t help but mother everyone. Jesse had wondered, when he had first met him, if GR was for Gabriel Reyes - but if it was, Jesse sure didn’t know what role he filled. They weren’t close enough to be friends, angry enough to be enemies, and Jessie didn’t swing that way so they definitely wouldn’t be lovers. But that still left three roles to fill - assuming he’d gotten the AA right. He couldn’t imagine Angela as his enemy, for a number of reasons. Hell, Cassidy doubted she was anyone’s enemy, not with her sterling reputation for saving lives both on and off the battlefield. She wore a fuckin’ halo and set of wings; her callsign was Mercy. She was probably the best goddamned person he’d ever met, and they’d barely said more than ten meaningful words to each other. He probably hadn’t even introduced himself. Not like there’d been much time for pleasantries, considering he’d just pulled her out of a strike mission gone straight to hell. No, if she was bonded to him in some way it was one of the other two - friend or lover. He knew it was always possible that she was his match - and that he wasn’t hers. Far too many people had to settle for less because theirs wasn’t a perfect match, and wouldn’t it be just his luck to be in that position? Considering who they both were, Jesse was doubtful that he could ever entice Angela into his bed - so he could only hope that she wasn’t soulmated to him in that way. Of the three options, being his closest friend was far more preferable than the heartache of the other. Not like that was any likelier. Who was he kidding? She was the fucking angel of Overwatch and he was a semi-reformed gangster that had been press-ganged into becoming a Blackwatch agent. It wasn’t like there was any reason for their paths to even cross, except in rare - and extreme - situations like this one. Angela would forget he even existed once they landed - and damn if that didn’t sting, just a little bit. It shouldn’t, since they’d barely spent three hours together and had said practically nothing to each other, but there it was. Cassidy knew better than this, he did, but the idea had taken root somehow. Like a sore tooth, he couldn’t help but fixate on the idea. He’d get over it in a day or two, after exhausting himself in training and burying himself in mission planning. He’d forget her, just like she would forget him. He’d become a footnote - if that - in her life. The carrier jolted as it landed, breaking him out of his thoughts. By the time he looked up again, he was met with cool eyes and a gentle smile. It was the exact opposite of the sorrow that he had seen on her face, to the point where he wondered if he’d imagined it all. As soon as the carrier rolled to a stop, they were both climbing to their feet. “I do not think I have thanked you,” Angela said softly as they waited for the ramp to lower. He glanced over at her in surprise; Cassidy hadn’t expected her to speak to him at all, much less to thank him. “Don’ worry about it; it was nothin’,” Cassidy said - though he was pleased at the recognition. If anything, he’d expected her to rail against him for arriving too late to save her team - but if he had known about the bomb, Cassidy doubted she would have been in the field at all. “Maybe not to you,” Angela agreed, “but you saved my life, and I am grateful.” She shrugged out of his serape and offered it back to him. “If there is anything I can ever do for you, I would be more than happy to oblige.” Cassidy blinked as he grabbed the cloth; surely he had heard her wrong. There was no way she meant that; those were just pretty words to make her feel better. Cassidy doubted she expected him to ever even attempt to collect - how could he? Okay, yeah, he was Blackwatch and he could probably find her with some digging, but not without drawing a whole lot of attention that he’d rather avoid. “Sure thing,” Cassidy agreed anyway. There was no reason to antagonize her; she was more than capable of making his life miserable, considering her rank and who she was friends with. Angela nodded once before making her way down the ramp and into the sunlight as he settled his serape back into place over his shoulders. Fuck, it smelled like her. Cassidy headed down the ramp after her, steps hesitating briefly as he saw who was waiting: the Commanders and the Captain. For a moment, he panicked - he’d never done anything to warrant a visit from more than one of them, and now all three were here - but then he realized that they were all looking at Angela. Ana drew Angela into a hug, which was unsurprising: that was what Ana did. What did surprise him was how Angela threw her arms around the woman in return. That didn’t match the cold woman of rumor or the calm one he’d just spoken to - which reaffirmed the grief he had seen on her face. As Angela pulled back, shoulders tight with the stress of the day, Cassidy realized this was a private moment, one not meant for his prying eyes. Before they could realize he was watching, he slipped away into the shadows of the carrier to find a way off the roof. Still, Cassidy couldn’t keep himself from looking back at her one last time, the AZ on his ankle practically burning, and froze. Reyes’ hand was on her cheek, his face far more gentle than Jesse had ever seen, and Angela was smiling sadly up at him. Something - jealousy? He wasn’t jealous, he couldn’t be - twisted in his gut as he forced himself to turn away before they caught him staring. He was absolutely fucked if Angela was the one who was his fated lover, because there was absolutely no way she’d ever look at him the way she looked at Reyes.

Based on the official release from Blizzard regarding Cole's name, he would be known by his previous name during the original Overwatch [at the very least]. I am following that canon. But, because I understand the gravity of the events surrounding the name change, I will not actually use his old name - I will either tell the story from Cole's POV [to avoid casual usage] or descriptive language. Therefore, unless otherwise shown in this story, only a small handful of people know Cole's real name [Cole] and instead know him by the [unstated] previous name. Any other story, you'll find that Cassidy's name is actively known correctly - this is because it's easier to write instead of finding ways around his old name.

The contact sends a jolt of panic through Tony, and he’s shoving them off and scrambling to the bathroom before his partner can blink.

Growth by @lackofcooperation: Pepper’s tattoo is on her hip. Well, the one that isn’t faded yet. There are five dull, grey ones scattered across her body, seemingly random and different in shape and size, but what do they matter? They’re done. It’s over.

The only one she looks at these days are the sunglasses on her hip. They’re big. Obnoxiously big and shiny and she knows who they’re for, of course she knows.
