Shifuto: Thanks, I’m digging in~. Azami: Thanks for the food. Shifuto: Croquette udon is the best, but ramen's not far behind. Azami: Don’t just eat the noodles; eat your vegetables too. An unbalanced diet is bad for your skin. Shifuto: Yeah, yeah, I know~. But hey, it’d have been great if Kumon had come too. Azami: He seems to have supplementary classes, so he had no choice but to study hard. Azami: Oh, right. You’ll have a performance soon if I’m not wrong. Shifuto: Yep. Since the script is done, the practices will start any day. Shifuto: You’re coming to watch it when it starts, right? I’ll give Kumon a ticket so he can go too. Azami: I’m back. Izumi: Welcome home, Azami-kun. Azami: What are you doing? Izumi: I’m arranging some of our merch bromides. Izumi: I haven’t been able to arrange our play bromides, so I’m currently placing them in an album. Izumi: I was just looking at the bromides from the mixed play with God-za. Izumi: Here. A photo of you as Sasha. Azami: Y-You don’t need to show it to me.

Choose 1: Don’t be shy.

Izumi: You don’t have to be shy. Azami: I-I’m not being shy about it. Izumi: You know, looking at bromides makes me feel like it has been a long time since then. Izumi: But it hasn’t been that much. A bit weird, isn’t it? Azami: …Doesn’t that mean your every day has been fulfilling to you? Izumi: Is that so… I guess you’re right. Izumi: Then, it isn’t a bad thing to feel like time goes by quickly. Azami: Yeah.

Izumi: Since the play theme was magnificent, the bromide has a noble vibe too! Azami: …Don’t look so into it. Izumi: Why? Every time I look at the bromide, I see how good it came out. Izumi: We should make it bigger and decorate the dorm entrance with it! Azami: What?! K-Knock it off! Izumi: Ahaha, I was joking. That’s just how splendid the photo is. Azami: Seriously…

Izumi: Since this is a mixed play with God-za, Shifuto-kun’s and Haruto-kun’s bromides are here too. Izumi: Let’s see… Here is Shifuto-kun. Azami: I can’t see him as the same person who was eating ramen with me earlier… Izumi: You were with Shifuto-kun, Azami-kun? Azami: Yeah. Izumi: Here, for you. Azami-kun is next to do this, after all. Azami: Spotlight Web Edition’s interview questionnaire…? Izumi: Kasumi-san will interview you on the appointed day, so check it beforehand. Azami: Ah, right. That was a thing. Izumi: Any question that calls your attention? Azami: …Since the last interview, have you experienced another moment that made you feel acting is interesting? Izumi: Around that time, we didn’t have the performance with God-za yet. Azami: It might feel like it happened recently, but a long time has passed since the last interview. Izumi: A mixed play with another company is not something all our company members have experienced… Izumi: Besides, acting with your childhood friend, Shifuto-kun, should have been a great experience. Izumi: You must have gained something from that performance… and that is how enjoyable acting can be, don’t you think? Azami: …Yeah, that’s right. Izumi: There’s still time before the interview day, so think more about it. Azami: Okay.

Kasumi: It’s a pleasure to work with you today. Azami: Same here. Kasumi: Let’s start right away, then.

Kasumi: Many fans might already know that Azami-san is not only an actor but the designated hairdresser. Kasumi: In our last interview, you mostly talked about hair styling and makeup, a great topic, especially for female fans. Azami: I agree. We did talk quite a lot about it. Kasumi: On the other hand, I remember how impressive your answer for “the moment you felt acting is interesting” was, showing us more about your actor self. Kasumi: Some time has passed since then, and you have played many roles—. Kasumi: But have you experienced another moment that made you feel acting is interesting recently? Azami: It might not be precisely a moment… but the mixed performance with God-za left a deep impression on me. Kasumi: That performance was on everyone's lips at that time. Azami: The script was a collaboration between Mankai Company’s in-house writer Tsuzuru-san and God-za’s Madoka-san… Azami: The production staff and the stage composition were different from our usual ones. That made it a good experience for me. Azami: It was a different feeling from creating a stage with the members I’m familiar with. Azami: Also, I could perform with my childhood friend Shifuto… Godza’s Shifuto Arakawa. Something I never believed possible. Azami: Having different exchanges than the ones we’re used to, along with our acting, made it, ahm, a bit awkward rather than interesting. Kasumi: Oh, I get it now. Shifuto Arakawa-san and Azami-san are childhood friends. Kasumi: In that sense, it is so lovely that you two can be rivals and help each other to improve! It’s so exciting, just like a drama plot development…! Azami: Ahm… well, I haven’t thought of it like that.

Kasumi: Thanks for sharing many things with me today. Azami: I enjoyed talking that much too. Azami: This kind of interview made me feel a bit awkward, but it was a good opportunity to look back on myself. Kasumi: I’m happy to hear you said that. Kasumi: Hi there.

Izumi: Kasumi-san!? Wait, did we have a meeting scheduled today?

Kasumi: Nope. I had an interview nearby, so I decided to stop by.

Izumi: Oh, I see! That surprised me.

Kasumi: Ahaha. I guess my little prank was a success. I’m glad I happened to bump into Isuke outside. Oh right. Thanks to all of you, our last feature on Flora High and Tsuku High was a huge hit. It looks like everyone can’t stop longing for their youths, huh?

Izumi: I guess so. I’m glad all the readers enjoyed it. Ah. You came all the way here, so please have some tea. I’ll make some right now.

Kasumi: Aw, thank you. Actually, I also brought something I’d like to pass along to you. I received a whole lot of these, so I’m sharing them with you.

Izumi: Woah, thank you so much! Are these sweets? They’re all Christmas-y and adorable!

Kasumi: Hehe, aren’t they? There’s several different types of packaging…. This one’s a Christmas tree, and this one looks like Santa.

Kasumi: What are your plans for Christmas? Naturally, I’m going to spend mine with my daughters… But I wonder who Director will be spending it with.

Izumi: You’ll see if you come to the MANKAI dorm.

Kasumi: Ahaha. Doesn’t that mean you’re going to spend it with all the troupe members?

Izumi: Fufu. I heard it’s common to spend Christmas with your family overseas.

Kasumi: Family…? I see. Why don’t we make “family” the next “Spotlight” special feature then? Because we’re family, there are sides of each other that we know, and on the other hand, sides of each other that we don’t know. And there are surely bonds that you would never be able to form anywhere else. I’ve always wanted to write an article about that kind of special, deep relationship. During this season, I’m sure each family has their own Christmas stories and such. We can ask troupe members who have family or close connections within or outside the troupe. What do you think?

Izumi: Family, huh… (Speaking of families, we have Juza-kun and Kumon-kun, Misumi-kun and Madoka-kun, and also…) (Hisoka-san and Chikage-san, I suppose?) (If we’re going to make a special feature, then the Hyodo brothers might be a good choice…) (But I think it would be safer not to reveal the relationship between Misumi-kun and Madoka-kun since he's still just a student and part of another troupe.) (As for Hisoka-san and Chikage-san…) I-It’s really hard to explain…

Kasumi: Hm?

Izumi: Ah, nothing! … …I think there are lots of different types of families, not just one. There are families that society would call "normal families", and there are also families who have missed each other and are now finally growing closer, little by little… There are also families who may not be related by blood, but the strength of their bonds are even stronger than that. MANKAI Company is like one big family, so I consider all of them my family. That’s why when you say “family”, it’s a bit hard to narrow it down…

Kasumi: …I see. That’s very true. A “family” is a special relationship, so it can be difficult sometimes. I mean, even our home is a bit different than what society considers normal as well. Alright, let’s discuss the next special feature again in a proper meeting next time.

Izumi: Sounds good. (I know I was declining the offer in a roundabout way, but I’m grateful Kasumi-san understood.) (Though, I do feel sorry I turned down the special feature just like that. I’ll have to properly explain the circumstances and apologize later…) (It won’t fill in for the feature, but I wonder if they’ll tell me if I ask them. About their special memories with their precious family members—)

Citron is familiar with/a fan of the Harvest Moon(HM)/Story of Seasons series and refuses to play Stardew Valley(SV) until more respect is put on its(HM) name. (Itaru thinks he'd like it if he played it though. But his opinion doesn't count because he started with SV not HM.)

Also. Once they get a bit more comfortable talking to each other and are in a better place, Orange decides to try playing some video games to better get to know Citron's interests. He intentionally buys Stardew Valley and makes jokes about things in HM reminding him of stuff in SV just to mess with Citron. (Orange: "Fascinating, the style of Harvest Moon DS is really reminding me of Stardew Valley!" "Wait, in this game this was my grandpa's farm? Huh, peculiar, that is just like Stardew Valley." Citron: （＾ワ＾）凸 Orange: 凸꒰･◡･๑꒱)

All in all though, Orange actually does take a liking to Farming Simulators in general and ends up playing those primarily, several of them. He's even following the game news on when others are coming out. Citron is a little wowed at how Orange is keeping track of so many at once, but he also makes sure that if he hears anything about any, he checks to make sure Orange has too.

HEY FANTA BESTIE !! i don't think I have any unpopular a3 opinions... hm

I wish they'd get citrons skin tone consistent.

I wish that every time one of the characters gets significant developments in a lead event, it wasn't just suddenly magically undone by the time the next backstage story rolls around.

I wish the gacha was nicer.

I think that izumi deserves her spotlight and should get an opportunity to act on stage with everyone else cheering her on like she did with them.

A3! Main Story: Part 4 - Act 13: Budding Spring - Episode 8: The First Play

[Door opening]

Towa: …

Towa: (It’s almost time for the event to start, I wonder if it’s okay for me to go in…)

Izumi: Ah, Towa-kun. Welcome. You can just sit around here and wait.

Towa: Hello…

Boy: Hey, I’m thirsty.

Dad: Here’s some water.

Izumi: There’s a vending machine in the lobby, if there’s anything you wish to buy, please do so now.

Young man: Umm, the restroom…

Sakuya: It’s that way. I can take you there!

Towa: (There are all kinds of people here, from elementary schoolers to older people…)

Towa: (The girl who looks like a high schooler and the Onee-san who looks like a college student are probably Spring Troupe fans like me.)

Towa: (No one seems to be an actor, so I’m relieved. Everyone gives off beginner vibes.)

Izumi: I think it’s about time, let’s get started.

Sakuya: Everyone, please gather here~!

Sakuya: Hello! I’m MANKAI Company’s Spring Troupe’s Leader, Sakuya Sakuma!

Sakuya: Thank you so much for choosing to participate in today’s Beginners Workshop!

Sakuya: This will be our first time doing this, so it’s something we aren’t used to doing, but we’ll do our best, and we hope you’ll enjoy it!

Citron: We’ll be starting with an exciting tour hosted by me and Sakuya!

Citron: We have also invited some special lecturers for today, so look forward to it~!

Sakuya: The first thing we’ll show you is the stage that can be seen best from these seats! Please watch your step as you climb up.

Youth: Woah…!

Towa: Amazing… So that’s what the stage looks like.

Sakuya: When you actually stand on the stage, the distance between one end and the other is much smaller. But since the line of sight is high, you can see all the way to the audience seats at the back.

Sakuya: When the scene starts getting exciting, the lights flicker like this, and when the scene’s tone is down, the lights sink like this…

[The light flickers on the whole stage, then a spotlight sinks down]

Citron: We can perform all kinds of performances like this!

Sakuya: We’ll go to the lighting booth next.

Citron: Introducing a special guest!

Sakuya: This is Akashi-san, our light operator.

Akashi: Ni-Nice… meet you…

Towa: Eh?

Citron: He’s a little shy, but his lighting skills are the real reel!

Akashi: J-Just the placement of one light can completely change the atmosphere of a scene… The atmosphere can also vary depending on who’s in charge of the lighting…

Rento: My job is to prepare the music and sound effects to be ready for use on the stage, and to actually play them in time with the play.

Rento: You gotta be a jack of all trades when it comes to music for this.

Rento: Obviously, the music that’s been prepared gotta match the scene, but if it’s too dull it’ll get in the way of the play.

Rento: Not only does music liven up the scene, but it can also help to keep up the tempo, so the flow of the play doesn't stagnate.

Youth: Heeeh… The music really does get me excited.

Towa: (The sound effects during a sword fight are also done by this person…)

Sakuya: Even a small mistake in timing can disrupt the play’s flow, so it’s quite a difficult job.

Citron: Rento’s sounds are always on point and feel good!

Yuki: Of course, the design must match the role’s image, but I also make sure the outfit looks good on stage and is easy to move around in.

Girl A: Do you make everything yourself?

Yuki: Pretty much. It’s easier to follow the image I’ve come up with that way. But I do get Taichi and others to help me with the more detailed parts.

Towa: Amazing…!

Azami: I’m in charge of coming up with a make-up plan according to the roles and their costumes, and applying said make up before each performance.

Sakuya: We used to do it ourselves before Azami-kun came along, so the difference is probably interesting to spot.

Citron: Our faces’ impact is completely different~!

Sakuya: Now that the backstage tour is over, it’s time for everyone to try their hand at acting!

Itaru: The theme this time is “Let’s enjoy our first time acting”.

Tsuzuru: Don’t worry about the finer details or your skills, all we ask of you is to experience what acting feels like.

Izumi: I’ll be handing out the scripts now.

Tsuzuru: This script is an excerpt of the Spring Troupe’s “Romeo and Julius” play.

Tsuzuru: We chose this because its theme is the popular Romeo and Juliet, and we thought it would be easy to reenact.

Itaru: And also because as Spring Troupe’s debut performance, it was performed by a cast that consisted only of beginners.

Towa: (“Romeo and Julius”... Masumi-kun’s Julius is cool.)

Towa: (It’s hard to believe he performed like that as a beginner.)

Tsuzuru: We will now divide into 6 teams and decide on the cast. We have decided the teams in advance, so I’ll just go ahead and announce them.

Towa: (What’s my role gonna be!?)

Masumi: I’ll be in charge of this team.

Towa: (This oshi pull luck is too good…! No, maybe he’s doing this out of consideration or good will or kindness…!?)

Masumi: Your staring is too loud.

Towa: !!

Masumi: As for the roles… Does anyone have a role they want?

Towa: — —

Towa: (My luck has been good thus far, I gotta go for it…!)

Towa: I’d like to do Julius!

Masumi: Does anyone else want to do Julius?

Masumi: … Julius is decided, then. Does anyone else have any preferences?

Young man: Ah, then, I’ll pick too–

Masumi: Which role?

Youth: Umm… I’m probably better off not having many lines… But…

Masumi: You’ll be taking turns switching, so pick what you like.

Young man: I-I want to do Romeo, then.

Masumi: If no one else has a preference, I’ll just do the picking.

Young man: “Ummm, let’s go on a journey, Julius. Let’s leave this stifling town, and travel the world.”

Towa: “Romeo, you have brawn. And I have brains. If it’s the two of us— Ummm, we can surely do anything.”

Towa: “Yes, the two of us–”

Young man: Ah, I’m sorry…

Towa: No, no, it’s my fault, I just can’t get it right!

Towa: (That was awful. It’s completely different from Masumi-kun’s Julius. This isn’t how Julius is supposed to be.)

Towa: (Embarrassing myself in front of Masumi-kun seriously makes me wish I was dead.) (1)

Towa: I’m sorry, I think it’d be better if someone else takes my place…

Young man: Then, me too…

Masumi: Everyone is like this at the start. Sakuya was, too.

Masumi: Try switching Romeo and Julius.

Young man: Eh?

Towa: I-I wonder if that will work...

Masumi: Say Romeo’s lines from the scene we’re on right now.

Towa: “Let’s go on a journey, Julius. Let’s leave this stifling town, and travel the world.”

Young man: “Romeo, you have brawn. And I have brains. If it’s the two of us, we can surely do anything.”

Towa: “Yes, the two of us can go anywhere!”

Towa: (Huh? Somehow, the lines came out of me more naturally than before…)

Towa: (Saying these lines felt good…)

Young man: Huh…

Towa: I think I did it, somehow…

Young man: Me too…

Towa: You’re amazing, Masumi-kun!

Masumi: It was just a matter of compatibility.

Towa: (My heart is still pounding… Just what is this feeling… I can’t help but want to keep acting.)

Personal Update - Recovering from burnout 😔

Hi everyone!

I hope everyone had a great holiday and new year! I apologize for disappearing for a bit, but as life is, a lot has been going on. Long story short, I started a new job in December so it's been a very busy time as I transition and hit the ground running here.

Also, taking some time away has made me come to terms with: how I'm simply burnt out.

—Which honestly, isn't that surprising considering I've been posting on this blog for almost 4 years now, haha. I know the last year has been a lot less consistent, but for 3 years, I was posting A3 translations almost daily. Looking back, I don't even know how I did it? Like wow, good for me. But also, wow, that was such a different time in my life 😂

Rest assured I still love A3 (and Masumi) and I'm still playing the game regularly! That hasn't changed. But in terms of posting A3 translations—I think I'm in dire need of an actual break.

But seeing as Anni is just around the corner, my current plan for this blog is:

Translate a bunch of anniversary cards

Finish the event stories I have ongoing: Journey to the Colours & Spotlight (Secret): Brothers

However, updates will continue to be slow. I will also come back to translate new Masumi content. But I think it's best if I step back and take it easy for now.

Again, I'm not planning to go anywhere! All these boys mean so much to me 😌❤️ but I also can't deny the current intense burnout I'm experiencing. I'm sure I'll bounce back, but it may take some time.
