Just in case anybody doesn’t know, the new total ban on abortion laws that are being proposed in various US states mean that America will, in those places, be more restrictive about abortion than Saudi Arabia or Iran. And in fact, in every Islamic country women are allowed abortions if the life of the mother is at risk because, just like Judaism, the life of the mother is considered more important than the potential life of the child. Judaism is, unsurprisingly, more open minded about this than Christianity or Islam but I think it’s still fairly restricted in Israel. Not as restricted as it would be in the Palestinian territories, but you get my point. I just wanted to say this that it’s always the impression that however conservative American Christianity is, Islam must be far more conservative but in this case Christianity ends up being the more conservative one. That being said, I obviously would not want to be a woman in a Muslim country right now but I felt like I would link this article and remind everybody of that browser extension, what is it? 11 foot pole or something where you can get around a pay wall. Might be useful in this case.

A great little talke about how a bigoted, homophobic Iowa town drove out nearly the entire staff of their only library becase the mostly LGBTQIA staff was including some Queer books against the wishes of the Christofascist townsfolks.

A Quote: “At the meeting in March, Brooke Kruckernberg’s mother [a bigoted resident] also spoke up, stating, “For each book promoting the LGBTQ lifestyle, there should be a book on display that discusses how God created and designed people as either male or female from birth, for life.”Greenlee later explained that, in reality, only 7 of the 5,800 children’s section materials involved queerness whatsoever. On the other hand, Christianity and Christian themes were featured in 173 Children’s books.Sadly, the reality and bare numbers of the situation weren’t enough to assuage the queerphobic community members’ protestations. Clearly, they wouldn’t be happy until queerness was erased from the library shelves — and staff — entirely.”

Life was, for once, good.

It was a perfect day, warm but with just enough breeze, and Ben had nowhere to be except right there in Hux’s manicured back yard. There was a cooler full of craft beers, a mostly demolished platter of snacks, and company that was more interested in getting tipsy than in conversation. His lounger was sturdy enough to hold him and the broad patio umbrella kept the sunlight from his pasty skin.

The eternal fucking tragedy of Jupiter Ascending is that the wider world doesn't love it like we do. Does it have every single thing that turns my crank, id-wise? Sure! Does it have gorgeous over-the-top sequined costumes and extravagant set pieces that remind you at every minute that this movie specially thanked Swarovski Crystal in the credits? Sure! Does it have theeeee single most pinpoint reading of MY PERSONAL FEMALE GAZE that Channing Tatum has ever done? (sorry mister Magic Mike, but you do not even come CLOSE to "may I kill him?" in terms of sexy) SURE! Was this movie a commercial or critical success? Absolutely not 😔

There isn't, as far as I'm aware, an art book. There isn't an official novelization. There isn't even an actual script posted to the usual internet databases that isn't just an automatic shitty talk-to-text rendition of the movie dialogue. There are concept art paintings and old cast interviews floating around, and this auction website where the Wachowskis auctioned off some of the props from the movie, but as far as canon resources and extra material beyond the movie itself there isn't much. A quick duckduckgo search would probably be more helpful to you than anything else, if any of the websites still have the articles up - it WAS eight years ago, and doesn't that just break my fucking heart.

My corner of tumblr LOVED this movie. In 2015, there were TONS of posts gathering interviews, posting concept art, making cosplays, all the signs of a small but healthy fandom ecosystem. However, we call this the blue hellsite for a reason - not all of those resources are still there, and the ones that survived time and incompetent archival site coding are probably difficult to find. I would definitely recommend trawling the JA tags of all the blogs I tagged at the start of this post, as JA introduced me to two of my longest and most beloved of all mutuals. ALL of their insights were key to A Fine Chain.

There is also my own jupiter ascending tag and my more specific jupiter ascending meta tag, although I don't know how bored you are lol. The general JA tag is 105 pages - I would almost recommend just starting at page 105 and working forward from there since it chronicles my descent into kinky space angel werewolf brain rot pretty nicely. There are also my ao3 bookmarks for JA.

I WILL SAY that it has been 8 years, and I have changed into a very different person than the one I was when I first saw this movie. I don't REGRET the first few chapters of A Fine Chain, or any of my breathless meta posts, but I do think that if I were to write any of them over again, I'd hope that my writing style has matured and I'd have lots more extra material to draw from. Actually graduating from law school, writing long fic in another fandom, and generally percolating more as a person has given me lots of new perspectives on JA that make it more interesting even as I still enjoy it (for example, HBO's Succession is ODDLY RELEVANT and I wish there were more JA fanwriters to take advantage of that fact).

...I hope that was helpful? I will ETERNALLY mourn the fact that this fandom wasn't isn't bigger - we haven't even broken 1k on ao3! But EYE MYSELF am here to discuss JA stuff as long as this weird spurt of creative energy sustains me, and my inbox is always open!

Yeah, it’s tehcnically When You Believe, I went back and changed it -- I always mistake the title (both lyrics are in the chorus) because I haev a ukulele tab version that calls it There Can Be Miracles.

Damn, Six year olds sure learn different stuff than I did when I was six. This is so cute!

When I was six I was obsessed with stop motion animation and other monster-movie special effects, but when I was six home movie cameras were still a bit of a luxury, so I just had books and Wil Vinton movies -- I’m so glad that kids now have access to so much I didn’t and can make little animations like this!

May I ask why post-apocalypse are a hard no? There are definitely some genres that I look at once and back away from at high speed.

I did an essay about it here on tumblr a while ago that I can’t find now, when I was getting about one recommendation a month for Zombies Run, but the short answer is personal taste, really. Part of it is that very few apocalypse or post-apocalypse stories are built on hope; most seem to be a kind of voyeuristic exploration of people being awful to each other, which is not only something I’m not interested in but also sort of contradictory to how we know people react in disasters. Rebecca Solnit wrote a great nonfiction study of this called A Paradise Built In Hell, but the book also sort of proved to me that I didn’t want to read postapocalyptic literature regardless of its levels of hope, because I had a really hard time with the nonfiction book. So yeah, I could talk about the flaws in the genre, but I also make exceptions on occasion (Snowpiercer comes to mind) and it boils down to basically “It’s not my bag.”

This sounds counterintuitive, but try a fine sawtooth edge. It's what we use at the library and if you get a dedicated cardboard cutter, you can even cut circles out for the cryptids to jump in or peer out.

Yeah, someone in asks suggested to me a cardboard knife with a serrated safety edge, and apparently they run about $8 at hardware stores, so I’m going to pick one up and try one of those.

Oh, that’s a thing?  Is it still a thing when one has already thrown one’s email address into the queue?

I think I’m good with waiting, A) so if I run out of steam by that point then I just won’t bother, and B) I don’t know if the site would tell an inviter when the invitee had signed up, but waiting means I can be 100% sure of my total anonymity over there as I gently die of All The Feelings.  I’ll be dead either way, but at least I’ll keep my dignity.

Oh my god, this is one of those terrible questions that always gives me the cold sweats, because EVERY fictional universe has something dreadfully wrong with it, sometimes just because it’s set before modern technology and thus there are no flush toilets or PlayStation, and sometimes it’s built ugly, like The Hunger Games.  Also, a huge question is whether or not I would be one of the people who had magic, was a noble, knew about fairies, had superpowers, etc., or whether I’d occupy a similar social station.

I would probably go to an alternate earth, if I could.  Like the setting for Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye books would be a good candidate.  Not much would change except maybe Raleigh would be Cait Sidhe.  Or, like, the generally-benign but superheroic world of Sky High.  There are supervillains, but it’s not a scary world.

I’d take all my friends and loved ones with me, if they wanted to go, and probably a bunch of people I don’t even know, just because they’d be better off there.

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?“How do you sit?” he asked before he could stop himself. “How do you lie down?”Because I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT. Lying down, I can see. I guess. But even if her wings are 90% feathers sitting would pose a challenge.

5: What part was hardest to write?Diaval ACTUALLY GETTING HIS HANDS ON HER WINGS. I wanted to make sure that he was aware of Maleficent’s trauma and trying to be so, so careful. Also for Maleficent to be working past her comfort boundaries because even if it’s Diaval she just got her wings back. Like, these two beautiful idiots are desperately trying to reach out and trying not cut each other on their sharp edges. (Ok, Maleficent’s sharp edges mostly) And then Diaval just keeps talking . . .
