No Water Off My Back
Summary: Clementine thinks back to her childhood friend Duck and deals with her feelings on his disappearance.
Word Count: 1000+
Read on AO3:
Read Chapter 2:
Clementine stared out into the open seas, watching as the waves rolled in and gently crashed against the ship. She was in silent awe of how beautiful the sunrise looked upon the deep blue waters. Her mind slowly began to wander as the blade in her hand transitioned from one finger to another. Something about the sea today was drawing out old memories for her. Maybe it was the color of the sunrise or the extra salty smell of the sea today. Something was making her feel nostalgic about the first crew she had first been a part of.
But soon her mind was heavy with the memory of all those she had lost. Usually, her thoughts stayed on Lee, her guardian during the early few years of her life, a man who took her in as his own and made sure to teach her how to survive while still showing her a gentle kindness that made her feel safe. God, some days she really did miss Lee but her mind seemed set on mourning another loss today, one of a friend that meant a lot to her. As the images of his smile filled her mind Clementine spun the knife between her fingers faster until she accidentally nicked herself.
“Ow, shit,” She swore under her breath, shaking her hand violently to get rid of the pain.
“I think this might work better,”
A handkerchief appeared by the side of her face, causing Clementine to look up and spot Prisha.
“Thanks,” Clementine grabbed it and began to apply pressure to the small wound.
“Think nothing of it. If it gets worse I’ll grab Ruby,” Prisha sat beside her friend on the edge of the ship.
“Eh, I think it’s just a bleeder. Acts tough but it won’t last long,” Clementine mumbled before looking out onto the waters again.
The two sat in silence for a while before Prisha broke it.
“Your eyes seem heavier today. Couldn’t sleep?”
Clementine shook her head. “It’s not that, just thinking about an old friend I lost,”
“Oh, my condolences for your loss,”
“Yeah,” Clementine took a deep breath. “I’ve lost lots of people over the years so it's not like it was anything new but still. I’m missing him today, him and his loud voice and carefree attitude. He was such a dumbass,” Clementine shook her head with a smile then inhaled sharply.
“Mind if I ask how you lost him?” Prisha held onto a nearby rope to help secure her spot as the ship gently rocked with the waves.
“I don’t mind,” Clementine gripped onto the side of the ship and stared down into the watery depths. “His name was Duck,” She glanced over and saw her friend’s expression. “It was his nickname, his real name was Kenneth. Named after his dad. But everyone called him Duck. No matter what kind of trouble or bullshit life threw, it always rolled off his back like water.”
“Ah, his nickname is starting to make sense now.”
“Yeah,” Clementine’s gaze wandered up to the sky that was starting to turn to a warm orange. “He was part of the crew on the first ship I was on. That ship was… a mess but still, it felt like family to me. He was like my brother, always there, always trying to cheer me up and just a bit annoying,” Clementine laughed to herself. “If you were looking for one of us, you’d probably see the other right there too. Everything was going okay until another crew attacked us when we weren’t prepared at all. We all fought like hell and there were losses that day but the one that stung the worst was Duck’s. When the fighting finished and the smoke had cleared he was just gone. Disappeared without a trace,” Clementine slowly lifted up her right knee to rest her chin upon it. “We searched everywhere but he was just gone,” Tears stung her eyes but she refused to shed them.
Prisha was silent for a few seconds. “I am very sorry for your loss, losing someone you thought of as a brother,” Her throat became tight and tears slowly blurred her sight. “Years ago when I was much younger, my hometown was struck with a plague. It wiped out my parents in mere days and death felt like it was everywhere. I tried my best to stick by my brother, Sanjay, who was ill at the time. I swore I would protect him no matter what,” Prisha’s eyes were focused on the sun as tears slid down her face. “But one day he wasn’t responsive. He’d grown sick too. And when I went out to try and get help I was taken. Over the years I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that he’s gone. So I understand it, the pain of losing someone like that,” She looked over at Clementine whose face was slick with tears.
“The losses never get easier, do they?”
“No, they never do,” Prisha took a deep breath then quickly switched the subject. “Your hand, is it doing alright now?”
Clementine lifted up the handkerchief to check. “Sorta,”
“Okay, I’ll go get Ruby,” Prisha began working her way back to the main deck.
“Prisha,”
Prisha glanced back at her friend.
“Thanks for sharing and the handkerchief,”
Prisha smiled softly. “Think nothing of it,”
The day quickly moved on from that conversation and even though it took Clementine a few attempts she was able to focus on things other than her childhood friend. She began to do her daily chores, getting a surprise hug from AJ when he woke up and small, loving kisses from Louis whenever he had the chance. Soon the morning changed to the afternoon where Clementine sparred with Mitch, the two of them shit-talking constantly as they exchanged attacks. When evening rolled around Clementine got lost in a discussion with Aasim about a topic that seemed to not interest the majority of the crew. Instead, Willy, AJ, Sophie, and Brody got caught up in dancing with Rosie while Marlon played his flute. Despite the bittersweet memories that had appeared in her mind in the early hours of the day, Clementine felt as though she’d had a good day.
However, it soon became a pattern that her mind would wander towards memories of Duck whenever she rose at dawn. Oftentimes she caught herself thinking about how much he would’ve loved to be on Ol’ Kickass and with others like the Ericson pirates. Still, she never let her emotions weigh her down to the point that it affected the rest of her day. So Clementine continued creating new memories day in and day out on the seven seas.
After several weeks afloat they were finally able to dock at a port town to trade their goods and get rid of their sea legs for a day or two. Sophie and Marlon immediately wandered off into the town, excited to get some time away from Ol’ Kickass while Prisha and Violet seemed happier to have fewer people on deck as they cuddled in the hammock on the upper decks. Clementine had debated on what she wanted to do with this day off. She could spend it doing inventory with Ruby and Aasim onboard the ship but she figured the two of them also wanted to just have some time alone. So she went and found Louis who was currently walking around with AJ on his shoulder so that the small pirate could feel tall and mighty.
“Well if it isn’t the most badass pirate in all the lands,” Louis strolled forward and stole a kiss from Clementine. AJ made a face and disgusted sound at that which gained him a look from Clementine. Louis chuckled. “Eh, you’ll understand one day, little man. Kissing is cool,”
“Nah, it seems gross,” AJ shook his head which made Clementine sigh knowingly as she took her love’s hand.
“You’re gonna eat those words one day,” Clementine sent up a smile to AJ who didn’t seem convinced.
“Nuh-uh,”
Quickly the little family unit got into a discussion until AJ got distracted by the cool marketplace. Immediately Louis led the charge over, hoping to find a trinket to gift to his wife. While Louis and AJ got caught up in all the interesting wares that the marketplace had to offer Clementine got distracted by something else. She felt as though eyes were upon her back, yet each time she turned round she couldn’t find anyone. At first, she figured she was being paranoid but the continuous sensation of the hairs on her arms standing up and the uneasy feeling in her gut made her doubt she was going crazy.
“What’s wrong?”
Clementine glanced over to see the worry in her husband’s eyes.
“Not sure, just something feels off,”
“Like dangerous?” Louis studied Clementine’s eyes and got his answer. “Alright, take AJ and I’ll find the others, I think Omar, Willy and Brody should be done trading wares.”
“Okay,” Clementine shared a quick kiss with her love then took AJ. It was better to be safe rather than sorry. They had run into too much trouble, had lost too much together that taking any unnecessary risk was out of the question.
While AJ was sad to not add anything new to his collection he could tell how serious the situation was and listened to Clementine when she told him they were heading back to Ol’ Kickass. They returned to the ship quickly. As Clementine explained the situation to those onboard Louis had returned with the others, helping carry the new wares and trading materials that Omar, Willy, and Brody had successfully gotten through bartering. It didn’t take long for the crew to work together to pull up the anchor and set sail. The ship cut through the light blue waters as they traversed towards the west where Aasim was certain they could find new places where they weren’t known.
A day or two passed with no signs of danger and life immediately went back to normal. Until one day in the early afternoon when Willy spotted something from the crow’s nest. As he leaned over, staring into a spyglass, he spotted a ship that was slicing through the waves as if they were nothing.
“Ship spotted towards the northeast!” Willy called out, alerting the others. Quickly the entire crew was swarming about on the upper deck. Louis began to shout out directions and his crew followed them without question. It took no time at all before they were ready for battle but the unknown ship was already upon them. Immediately the crew of the other vessel tossed over their anchor before a pirate with an unreadable expression strolled forward.
They studied the crew in silence which made the Ericson pirates on edge, ready for any sort of signal for an attack. Suddenly however a happy sound made them glance to the right to see a tall, brunet pirate dressed in captain’s garb swing over and land on their ship. His feet thunked against the board as he stood before Clementine. After a second his head lifted, revealing a scar that ran across his right eye, forcing it shut. The enemy captain locked eyes with Clementine and beamed.
“Looks like I finally found you!”

"well, look what we have here. welcome aboard, princess."
a macheresin pirate x prince au that has completely taken over my life. (@salemfrogtrials i blame you)
jake's the captain of the hidden dagger, one of the kingdom's most prolific pirate crews. he's cocky and arrogant and doesn't let anyone get close to him. javy is the crown prince, sheltered from birth and knowing nothing about the world. he runs away one day and gets kidnapped by jake's crew, who are ecstatic to have the prince as ransom. except, they quickly realize that using the prince as a bargaining chip won't work, and javy actually wants to stay.
jake decides to let the prince stay. and of course, they fall in love.
javy learns what it's like to be loved for who you are, not who you're expected to be; jake learns what it's like to be loved despite who you and others think you are.
(natasha is javy's knight who is leading the charge to rescue him. reuben and mickey are part of her crew. the rest of the daggers are a part of jake's crew.)
if you want to hear about the choices behind my designs ↓
jake: long hair and a beard because pirate lol, he's got fancy belts and necklaces and earrings and keeps a sword on him. he's got green on him bc he deviates slightly from your typical pirate color scheme, reflecting how despite his appearance, he is, in fact, a green flag. lol.
javy: his main color is purple because it reflects royalty. on his prince outfit, the orange represents rebellion as its his favorite color and a part of his individuality. he doesn't have his piercings or eyebrow slit before he runs away, but after he joins jake he does (probably a swordfight for the eyebrow). also. he's wearing jake's little belt tassel (the green one) after he becomes a proper pirate and jake gives it to him. he gets jewelry BUT he keeps the purple on his design because he's still a royal after all.
javy’s got white pants and jake has dark pants, and javy’s got a dark top while jake’s is white. it's a representation of their experiences being essentially opposites. HOWEVER they do share the same gold-orange color throughout their design- both on the bottom of their shoes, both on the jewel they wear (javy’s under his collar and jake’s on his belt). jake’s green sashes are closer to yellow on the color wheel which makes it more complementary to javy’s purple. over time, javy slowly gains bits and pieces of jake’s design and vice versa- specifically javy gets jake’s green and jake gets javy’s orange. javy wears dark pants like jake while jake starts wearing dark tops. essentially over time their color choices begin to match each other but they still keep individuality.
okay sorry ramble over. i will be returning to this. please enjoy!

I am, at my CORE, a Black Sails fan, and more recently a TCW and codywan fan, and now I see there are pirate era AUs and LORDS is there no MERCY IN THIS WORLD -
But, now I know it's a thing, can I just share how important the Clone Troopers as a maroon colony is to me?
Men and women born and raised on plantations and colonies to defend the men that own them, to work the land and produce materials they're told is more valuable than they are, until they realise, this isn't worth the cost anymore
Men and women who choose their own names to distance themselves from what others had decided they were, to choose who they want to be. Sly Fox, hot-headed Boil, never-forgetting Echo. Some names are reclamations of the language of their oppressors - Coeur de Lion, Cody Lions. Rex, King.
Men and women who flee to find land they can call their own in the turbulent Caribbean, a land they call GAR/Guard/Garden, a reminder to not just defend, but to grow
They are not mindless slaves. They are people. And they will build their own culture.

A:tla - Pirate AU
Katara: hates pirates, actively tries to cut off their ambush routes. Leads assaults against the biggest threats. Speaks out against superstitions about having women on board
Aang: Katara’s errand boy warrior assistant who actually used to be a pirate but somehow hasn’t put that together (“yeah I don’t know, my family used to sail a lot but I don’t really remember why”)
Sokka: master cartographer and way-finder. He also submits many many ideas to the government about how to reconcile with some of the less violent captains and even use them to everyone’s advantage. Also in charge of finding less dangerous trade routes and gives free sailing/cartography lessons in his free time
Zuko: thinks/says he’s a pirate but is actually just REALLY deep into the black market and becomes a master tradesman. (I.e. he doesn’t actually sink vessels or actively try to hurt people, but has been known to order raids on ships run aground) Everyone he trades with sees his scar and decides its best to just give him a good -if not their best- prices so his ships will go in peace
Suki: runs an all-woman armada that is more feared than most pirate lords. They adopt Anne-Bonnie’s method of dressing like men until right before they kill their enemies- to let them know that they were in fact killed by a woman
Toph: daughter of two wealthy royal merchants- she stows away to find out who sank her favorite ship. She finds Zuko instead and becomes his iron fist- she thought about causing a mutiny against him since she’d “obviously make a better captain” but decides she doesn’t want the responsibility. She’s also their best spy.

A Profitable Dive
Summary: Aasim works to find a spot treasure may be so that the Ericson pirates can repair their ship.
Word Count: 1674
Read on AO3:
Aasim studied the map carefully, his eyes checking for any sort of inconsistency as his fingers traced along the rough surface. His lips turned in a small frown as he looked over at the compass. The coordinates that had been given were inconsistent between the different taverns they had visited. Yet they all were around the general area to the west near what looked to be a deserted island. There really was no telling though if that was the case until the Ericson pirates went there and saw for themselves.
So Aasim kept working, burning through one of the candles late into the night as he searched for this supposed lost chest that was rumored to be around those parts. Most of the pirates Aasim had spoken to had little to no experience with dives making them bitter about missing out on a chance at treasure. It didn’t take away his chances though. Aasim had guessed that having a strong lung capacity and the ability to dive down into deep watery depths would yield him good results someday. He had been working on his skills in part for this and in part in case they ever got caught in another sea battle that caused one of his friends to fall into the water without a chance of swimming up by themselves.
Now with these rumors, it seemed like his skills might finally be put to the test and with excellent timing too. They were broke again and with the latest adventure Ol’ Kickass had taken quite a beating. It was about time that they visited Sisi and Doug again.
If this treasure chest really was at the location that Aasim had guessed based on the stories he heard then the crew would be set for some time. With a small smile, Aasim blew out the candle and ventured down below decks, ready to apologize to Ruby for spending so many nights on this and excited to tell her that he may have finally pinpointed the location.
“Are you sure?” Louis studied the map laid on the table in the cartography room then up at his friend.
“Positive. If it's not at those coordinates then it will be nearby.” Aasim held his captain’s gaze before Louis broke contact to look over at Marlon.
“I trust Aasim, he’s always been good when it comes to maps,”
Louis nodded to his best friend’s words. “Yeah, okay, I’ll let Omar know to change course. Vi-”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll kick the others’ butts into gear about the sails,” Violet stuffed her hands in her pockets then opened the door and left. Louis and Marlon soon followed, leaving Aasim once more alone with his maps.
The journey wasn’t a long one, only a single day and night and as luck would have it the winds were in their favor. Ol’ Kickass sliced through the crisp, aquamarine waves of the sea not letting anything stand between it and its destination. It felt like no time had passed at all when they stopped at the coordinates Aasim had guided them too. His eyes stayed on the waves as they lapped up against the side of the ship. It was a mesmerizing sight. The glassiness of the water’s surface drew Aasim in, captivating him.
“So, who’s gonna make the dive?” Brody asked as she strolled forward. “We still haven’t gotten that diving bell yet so we should probably send one of our best.”
“I’ll go,” Marlon offered and made his way forward but Aasim shook his head.
‘No, I’ll do it. If there really is nothing down there then it would be because I messed up. So if anyone is wasting their breath down there, it's going to be me.” Aasim quickly undid his cravat, slowly slipping it free from his form. Once that was done he worked to take off his deep red pirate coat and placed that to the side.
“Besides, I was part of the cause for losing our funds,” Aasim sighed deeply. He couldn’t believe that he had gone out to a tavern at night with Mitch. Mitch had told him to let loose and after a tankard of honey rum he had been the one to suggest they play a game of bones with some fellow outlaws. That whole night was a mess and Aasim wasn’t even clear headed enough to remember how he had lost his trousers.
“Yeah, well I was the other dumbass so if you need to tap out just let me know,” Mitch clapped Aasim on the back and gave a smile.
Aasim looked at his friend, returned the gesture then worked to get off his loose white shirt. The laces on the shirt swayed as he tossed it aside. He didn’t want to be weighed down by anything when he dove nor did he want to be restricted by his coat.
The sunlight shone down strongly onto the ship, its rays glistening on his skin as he stretched, his muscles pronounced and toned.
The sight made Ruby’s cheeks turn an even rosier red as she watched her husband stretching while shirtless, all to ensure he didn’t cramp up when he was underwater.
“Okay, I should be good to go. I’ll dive down and if I find the chest I’ll come back up for the hook.”
Louis nodded. “I’ll be right there waiting.”
“Thanks,” Aasim took a deep breath. “Here I go,”
“Please, be careful,” Ruby looked worriedly at her husband who gave a reassuring smile.
“I promise.”
With those final words, Aasim dove gracefully into the water, his body cutting through the gentle currents with ease. He made sure to keep a mental timer going in his mind as he swam deeper and deeper. Little groups of fishes swam nearby before getting skittish and darting away from him. Colorful crabs peeked their eyes out from the seaweed and other plant life that grew in this underwater haven. Luckily it seemed like no dangerous sea creatures were nearby. Aasim thanked his luck for that; having to deal with sharks was the last thing he needed.
His hair swayed gently in the water as his eyes scanned the area. Aasim knew what he was looking for: any sign of broken wood or a shipwreck. He doubted he’d find a whole shipwreck though. With how clear the water was he and the others would’ve noticed something of that magnitude. Pushing through the water, he went deeper until he noticed something shimmer from the light that pierced it through the water's surface. Making his way over to the small boulder Aasim noticed a chest, its contents slowly spilling out. Gold coins scattered along the sands below as well as a spare necklace or two. Picking up some treasure as proof Aasim then worked to make his way back up toward the surface. His legs propelled his forward making it possible for him to resurface just before he ran out of air. With a sharp gasp, he flicked his head, getting the hair away from his eyes and plastered to the side of his face.
“I found it!” Aasim tossed some coins and a necklace onto the ship.
“Really?” Clementine’s eyes were wide as she stared at her friend. Behind her, Willy and AJ were cheering and hollering. Mitch seemed just as hyped by the news, giving enthusiastic high fives to the little kids.
“Yeah. Louis, the hook.” Aasim held out his hand and Louis carefully tossed the hook toward his crewmate. It thunked into the water causing a small splash to hit Aasim in the face. “Great throw,” Aasim’s voice was thick with sarcasm.
“Thanks!” Louis beamed and stood proudly on the side of the ship.
Aasim took a few moments to fully get his breath back then inhaling deeply he dove down once more. Slicing through the water he made his way back to where the chest was hidden and got to work. Picking up the rest of the loose coins, Aasim placed them back into the chest and tried to make the best use he could out of the shoddy latch. As soon as he was satisfied with that he used the rope and wrapped it around the chest, making sure that the hook secured it properly and made pulling it up easier. He checked and double-checked it before surfacing once more and giving the signal.
“Alright, pull!” Marlon called. He and Louis pulled on the rope to raise the chest to the surface. Mitch, Brody and Ruby quickly helped out as well. While they retrieved their treasure Aasim swam over and grabbed onto the side of the ship. Climbing up it with ease he lifted his body onto the ship with his toned arms. Water cascaded from his form as he got his footing and brushed back his wet hair. After catching his breath he worked with the others to carefully pull the chest up.
As soon as it was secure Mitch undid the rope and Willy pushed open the chest revealing a plethora of coins and treasures.
“Holy shit! Fuckin’ A! Good job, Aasim!” Mitch ruffled his friend’s hair before giving him a friendly smack on the back. Within seconds though Mitch was distracted by the shiny treasure again. Aasim watched with a smile as his friends spoke excitedly about the chest that they had found. It wasn’t every day that the leads led to something so great.
“You did great today, Pookie,” Ruby appeared by her husband’s side and got up on her tiptoes, surprising him with a cheek kiss. Aasim beamed at the praise, his eyes shimmering with pride.
“It was nothing, just helping out the crew,” Aasim shared a smile with his wife then looked over at the Ericson Pirates. The strain of financial struggles was now gone and once more the only worries Aasim had to deal with was the crew’s dumbassery. Still, he didn’t mind that too much., As long as everyone was safe and happy then he was too. Even if they occasionally got on his nerves.

And like, technically we got Lizzie v Pearl (v Katherine) (and oh that is an entire other thing, adding the fairy queen into the equation) in canon. During the final round of Joel's gameshow for the crown.
And Lizzie won (and flooded the arena immediately before combat began) but also like, outside the concepts and bounds of minecraft mechanics...
Both of them (all three of them) holding themselves back because you don't actually want to split the earth open or drown the lands (or rip open throats with sharp, sharp teeth and claws) for a tournament.
But all out war.
I'm not saying for sure that I'll be writing at least a one-shot of "if negotiations fall through and war does happen between the WRA and the Ocean Alliance"... but I'm not saying I won't.
