I love Anakin as a character but I think Star Wars as a whole needs to be less forgiving of him and his actions and I think Rex is the perfect character to explore this idea.
Rex wants to save his brothers more than anything and we know that he fails and never recovers from the trauma. It was an impossible task but he fought so hard for it. The clones don’t become a thriving community after the Empire falls. Few live to remember their sacrifice or that they were even there to begin with. They’re wiped off the map and that’s it and Rex just has the live with it.
Imagine realistically how you would feel if you were him and you learned that a huge reason why the Empire was even allowed to rise in the first place is because of the man who you trusted, who was one of your closest friends for three years, who convinced you that he thought of you as a person unlike the rest of the galaxy. I wouldn’t ever be able to look past it, and I don’t think Rex would or should either.
Obi Wan considers Anakin metaphorically dead because it’s the only way to cope with the grief.
Ahsoka has a more complicated view of him because of the distance leaving the Jedi order put between them.
Luke is able to forgive him in the only way that is narratively compelling, because he sees him as his father and not as the monster everyone else does.
Leia never forgives him (nor should she) but grows to understand him more over time.
Padme uses her dying breath to vouch for him even if he doesn’t deserve it.
If Rex didn’t forgive Anakin, it would offer yet another perspective. He is someone who loved Anakin, but Anakin is a huge reason why his brothers are dead. Anakin is the one who used his brothers as the tools they had always been told they were to march on the Jedi temple and murder the Jedi, the only allies the Clones ever truly had. Everything that happens during the reign of the Empire, including whatever goes down in the Bad Batch finale, is part of a huge domino effect because of Anakin’s choices. It would be tragic to see their friendship end this way, but Rex’s entire life is rife with tragedy. Ahsoka is the only positive result of his friendship with Anakin left. They only have each other.
I want Rex to be angry at him. Anakin’s actions are abhorrent and to downplay them only does Anakin a disservice as a character and denies his agency. Yes, he’s a victim of Palpatine’s grooming. He is also the perpetrator of a literal reign of terror and there are few groups of people who are bigger victims of the Empire he helped create than the clones.

some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

I'm so nervous because they keep stripping more and more away from The Bad Batch, and the clones.
Rex, Echo, without their kamas and shoulder pads, before losing the base they'd set up.
The destruction of the Marauder.
Removing the paint from their armour.
And now, not only did Wrecker had his chest piece torn apart by whatever they creature was, but Echo's armour is gone entirely. He's not getting that back.
Why do they keep losing so much??

Was originally going to reply but ran out of SPACE so
I've had a theory about this for a while - there's a character in Rebels that has something very similar, and Sabine explains that the empire implants lower level technicians with this device to increase productivity. This character uses his implant to allow him to download into his mind/the device huge amounts of Imperial data to take to the rebels - and loses his personality in the process. (Tseebo, in eps Empire Day and Gathering Forces, S1 SWR.)
So I've understood that, for Echo, much like how Tseebo downloaded large amounts of data, it allows him to download large amounts of data via his scomp, like a droid, but without putting any strain on his actual, biological memory. So while he can function perfectly fine as a human without it, it just lets him make the most out of his scomp where data transfer etc is concerned.
Still didn't know it comes off, though. Needed a TRIGGER WARNING for those EARS
Surprise!
It was a style choice to make me look more cyborgy all along!
Tumblr media
Just kidding - does anyone have an idea about the function of of his headpiece?
He seems to hear well without it - but maybe for quiet noises or specific frequencies? Anyway, a hearing aid wouldn’t have to be that big.
He can scomp in without it. But maybe he’s more efficient/faster with it?
He seems to think clearly without it. Does it prevent long-term effects from his cyborg interfaces like getting overwhelmed with all the inputs and having a headache? That would explain why he can do without for some time and why he didn’t have one in TCW. The problems would surface only over time.
I go with the last theory but I‘d love to hear your opinion and/or more theories!

Also. When Echo was plugged in for so long on the science vessel, 'checking the manifest' or whatever -
He was getting a message to Rex, right? We know Echo's priorities, there's no way he wasn't sending Rex the location Tantiss as soon as he got it.

There are four types of clones.
Forty percent of clones wanted to be a Mandalorian when they grew up. They want to follow in Jango’s footsteps, have a foundling, hunt bounties and be That Guy.
Forty percent wanted to be Jedi. They took in the training that said they were made to serve the Jedi who were good and went one step farther. They want to be a Jedi. They want to use the Force and fly through the air and have visions and throw stuff and defend the Republic.
Nineteen percent wanted to be some other profession. They wanted to be doctors, firefighters, bakers, farmers, and so on.
One percent wanted to be something it is physically impossible for a person to be. A cat, a bird, a spaceship.
Training would have sorted this out. No, you can’t be a doctor, but if you study hard you can be a combat medic. You definitely can’t be a spaceship but maybe you can fly one. You can’t be a Jedi but you can fight like one with lots of acrobatics and if you’re lucky you can fall in love with one.
Personal categorizations:
Clones who wanted to be Mandalorians: Rex, Echo
Clones who wanted to be Jedi: Cody, Hunter, Glitch (obviously)
Clones who wanted to be some other profession: Tech (scientist or literally all other professions), Crosshair (look at that man’s legs and tell me he wouldn’t be a dancer I will fight and die on this hill)
Clones who wanted to be something else: Wrecker (tooka or animal that gets cuddles), Fives (fire truck)

Thinking about how each protagonist in the Fallout TV show believes themselves to be the last true American because each of them is a different kind of American myth. Is being an American all about getting to be the lone gunslinger who exists in a world without rules or limitations? Is it about being controlled by a corporation in a hyper-consumptive society that only gives you the illusion of free choice? Is it about being in control of such overwhelmingly dominant military technology that you believe your power grants you the responsibility of being the world's moral authority? Let's do some drugs about it.

"Echo's on it"
I already posted about this but it only just hit me how this is the same Crosshair that picked fights with Rex saying he'd have left Echo for dead too and how he's just another reg to now having so much trust in his abilities that he's willing to sit back and wait because he doesn't doubt what Echo is capable of doing. The same Crosshair who had all those trust issues and refused to let people in has fully integrated back into the squad and the contrast between this and season one is staggering idk how to process this
