A Little Change in History Chapter 40
AO3
Five months into the future

Claire walks around the surgery with her huge bump leading the way. Her husband has urged her to slow down. She would like to but, with other pregnant women to look after, not to mention, those hurt in the process of bringing in the harvest, she simply can’t. She does promise not to overdo it.

Later, she is in her garden, pulling weeds with Mary when Jamie walks up. His hand is wrapped in a bloody rag. She jumps to her feet, swaying a bit, to be steadied by Mary.

“What have you done?” she demands.

“I cut it on one of the plow ropes. Shall my healer wife fix it?” he blinks at her in the owlish way he has. She fights a smile before a laugh escapes.

“Yes, you ridiculous human being.”

A year later
Claire lays on the bed in the Laird’s room, Faith cuddles by her side. Jamie holds their newest bairn, a son named Brian.

“He is a handsome lad, is he not?” Claire gives an exhausted smile from the bed. He is. Faith, born eighteen months earlier was the vision of her. Now walking and talking as she chases after her cousins, she is their heart. Brian, with his red hair and slanted blue eyes, is Jamie all over.

He is as busy as ever. With more Mackenzie ‘s arriving after the unexpected death of Hamish from the flu, he put his sister, Jenny, in charge of them. The lands and whisky flourish’s and all are happy and healthy.

Five Years Later

Brian, the future Laird, runs up to his dad. Jamie is working in the stables. The horses are profitable also with a plan his wife and himself came up with. Some are bred for the Scottish army who are keeping the British away. Jamie is checking on a new foal when his son makes his breathless arrival.

“Da, you must come quickly . Man is having the bairn!”

It is there forth child. A daughter rests in the Kirk yard, having been born still. Jamie was there for every delivery.

He runs in to join her. He arrives just as she is delivered of a lad. Mackenzie James, they have decided before hand to name him. He is redheaded and perfect, like his brother. Jamie kisses her forehead and his new son’s before placing his forehead to Claire’s, “Tha gaol agam ort.” He whispers to her. Claire repeats it before her contractions restart.

Five minutes later, a lass is delivered. Alexandra Henrietta joins her brother. She is as braw and redheaded as her brother.

Claire cries with joy as the midwife cleans the children. Jamie holds her, whispering prayers of thanks. This brand new world they have created will last forever now.
 The end

Prompt 162
“So,” Danny drawled from where he was sitting, legs kicking slightly. Really, what a fun reincarnation. A world with heroes and villains where he didn’t have to do shit in and could just vibe with Ellie.
“So,” Tim responded from where he was typing on his computer, mostly in civilian clothes save for his gauntlets and boots. The Red Robin outfit was haphazardly dropped across the couch and his pole leaning against the end.
“Technically there’s proper procedures for clones…” Danny motioned to both himself and Ellie from where they sat on the counter, snacking on a plateful of scones. From Alfred, he was certain.
“Technically, yes… but do we want to actually do that?”
All three of them smiled, something almost feral in the motion. Of course not. They all had the same memories after all, and Bruce had just returned from the past, from exactly where and when Tim had said he was. Despite no one believing him, hence why they were in his boathouse, and not in the apartment or manor.
“Think we can pull it off?” Ellie took a sip of tea, mischief swirling in her eyes.
“Of course we can.” Both Danny and Tim spoke at once, one pulling up a new doc and the other pulling the whiteboard out from under a curtain.

Boba is small and obnoxious, in a way only small tubies can be, squirming and thrashing around in his crib as he wails. He’s been told that Boba is denominated “a toddler”, by nat-born standards. CC-2224 is not impressed.
“What does the word ‘Boba’ mean,” he asks. The word has been bothering him for some time now.
Jango doesn’t raise his eyes from the datapad he’s frowning at, “It’s an old family name.”
CC-2224 considers this. Boba continues to wail at the injustices of the world. CC-2224 is sympathetic to that, at least.
And then the question pops in his head like an armed grenade.
“Can I have a name?” he asks.
Jango looks up at him, both eyebrows raised up to his hairline. There's a considering silencie, and then he says, like he's already regretting it, “You could.”
CC-2224 stares at him expectantly. Boba wails, mostly ignored.
Jango snorts and shakes his head, letting his attention fall back on his datapad, “You’ll have to come up with one on your own, kid. I’m shit at naming things,”
CC-2224 frowns, looking down at Boba, who’s finally beginning to realize no one paying much attention to his crying and he might need to adapt his strategies. He makes grabby fingers at CC-2224, who watches impassively.
Making an impulsive decision, he reaches into the crib and pulls the baby out, holding him at eye level like a hide up for inspection.
“I like the word kote,” CC-2224 says.
“Very modest,” Jango snorts, but he sounds approving. Newly christened Kote thinks he wasn’t looking for approval, but its nice getting it anyway.
Boba sneezes on his face, and the universe shifts.
Kote's never seen the sun, but someday he'll understand this moment feels like sunrise.

thoughts about the Cardassian writing system
I've thinking about the Cardassian script as shown on screen and in beta canon and such and like. Is it just me or would it be very difficult to write by hand?? Like.
Tumblr media
I traced some of this image for a recent drawing I did and like. The varying line thicknesses?? The little rectangular holes?? It's not at all intuitive to write by hand. Even if you imagine, like, a different writing implement—I suppose a chisel-tip pen would work better—it still seems like it wasn't meant to be handwritten. Which has a few possible explanations.
Like, maybe it's just a fancy font for computers, and handwritten text looks a little different. Times New Roman isn't very easily written by hand either, right? Maybe the line thickness differences are just decorative, and it's totally possible to convey the same orthographic information with the two line thicknesses of a chisel-tip pen, or with no variation in line thickness at all.
A more interesting explanation, though, and the one I thought of first, is that this writing system was never designed to be handwritten. This is a writing system developed in Cardassia's digital age. Maybe the original Cardassian script didn’t digitize well, so they invented a new one specifically for digital use? Like, when they invented coding, they realized that their writing system didn’t work very well for that purpose. I know next to nothing about coding, but I cannot imagine doing it using Chinese characters. So maybe they came up with a new writing system that worked well for that purpose, and when computer use became widespread, they stuck with it.
Or maybe the script was invented for political reasons! Maybe Cardassia was already fairly technologically advanced when the Cardassian Union was formed, and, to reinforce a cohesive national identity, they developed a new standardized national writing system. Like, y'know, the First Emperor of Qin standardizing hanzi when he unified China, or that Korean king inventing hangul. Except that at this point in Cardassian history, all official records were digital and typing was a lot more common than handwriting, so the new script was designed to be typed and not written. Of course, this reform would be slower to reach the more rural parts of Cardassia, and even in a technologically advanced society, there are people who don't have access to that technology. But I imagine the government would be big on infrastructure and education, and would make sure all good Cardassian citizens become literate. And old regional scripts would stop being taught in schools and be phased out of digital use and all the kids would grow up learning the digital script.
Which is good for the totalitarian government! Imagine you can only write digitally. On computers. That the government can monitor. If you, like, write a physical letter and send it to someone, then it's possible for the contents to stay totally private. But if you send an email, it can be very easily intercepted. Especially if the government is controlling which computers can be manufactured and sold, and what software is in widespread use, etc.
AND. Historical documents are now only readable for scholars. Remember that Korean king that invented hangul? Before him, Korea used to use Chinese characters too. And don't get me wrong, hangul is a genius writing system! It fits the Korean language so much better than Chinese characters did! It increased literacy at incredible rates! But by switching writing systems, they broke that historical link. The average literate Chinese person can read texts that are thousands of years old. The average literate Korean person can't. They'd have to specifically study that field, learn a whole new writing system. So with the new generation of Cardassian youths unable to read historical texts, it's much easier for the government to revise history. The primary source documents are in a script that most people can't read. You just trust the translation they teach you in school. In ASIT it's literally a crucial plot point that the Cardassian government revised history! Wouldn't it make it soooo much easier for them if only very few people can actually read the historical accounts of what happened.
I guess I am thinking of this like Chinese characters. Like, all the different Chinese "dialects" being written with hanzi, even though otherwise they could barely be considered the same language. And even non-Sinitic languages that historically adopted hanzi, like Japanese and Korean and Vietnamese. Which worked because hanzi is a logography—it encodes meaning, not sound, so the same word in different languages can be written the same. It didn’t work well! Nowadays, Japanese has made significant modifications and Korean has invented a new writing system entirely and Vietnamese has adapted a different foreign writing system, because while hanzi could write their languages, it didn’t do a very good job at it. But the Cardassian government probably cares more about assimilation and national unity than making things easier for speakers of minority languages. So, Cardassia used to have different cultures with different languages, like the Hebitians, and maybe instead of the Union forcing everyone to start speaking the same language, they just made everyone use the same writing system. Though that does seem less likely than them enforcing a standard language like the Federation does. Maybe they enforce a standard language, and invent the new writing system to increase literacy for people who are newly learning it.
And I can imagine it being a kind of purely digital language for some people? Like if you’re living on a colonized planet lightyears away from Cardassia Prime and you never have to speak Cardassian, but your computer’s interface is in Cardassian and if you go online then everyone there uses Cardassian. Like people irl who participate in the anglophone internet but don’t really use English in person because they don’t live in an anglophone country. Except if English were a logographic writing system that you could use to write your own language. And you can’t handwrite it, if for whatever reason you wanted to. Almost a similar idea to a liturgical language? Like, it’s only used in specific contexts and not really in daily life. In daily life you’d still speak your own language, and maybe even handwrite it when needed. I think old writing systems would survive even closer to the imperial core (does it make sense to call it that?), though the government would discourage it. I imagine there’d be a revival movement after the Fire, not only because of the cultural shift away from the old totalitarian Cardassia, but because people realize the importance of having a written communication system that doesn’t rely on everyone having a padd and electricity and wifi.

✨ Wedding Special ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@robstarblog @robstaryeah pinging yall just in case so that this doesn't get lost in oblivion (It'd be painful since I worked 5 hours non stop on it lol)
I think the most time was taken by the final panel and adding in the finishing touches since I pretty much had to change everything to the pixel level, quite literally lol (I'm serious, I did)
Welp I hope the results were worth it! And with that, another one gets a good ending!!
I kinda didn't add sleeves in the first two panels of the final page because it didn't look good and looked janky with how I was editing it so yeah please ignore that-

the x files really is so incredible in terms of fans and fandom. fans are so so so essential to the xfiles to the point that they’re literally embedded into the show—their usernames, sometimes their commonly held beliefs about the characters, sometimes jokes they made on forums. maybe it’s because i’ve never been really invested in tv series from the 90s or maybe it’s bc the x files really was that bitch back in the day, but i’ve never before witnessed a fandom so prevalent and everlasting. it’s so cool to witness

A Little Change in History Chapter 36
Thanks to @ladymeraud , as always ❤️
AO3
Mr. Foster, as he was known in the British army, lost his uniform when he wouldn’t rape a woman that his commanding officer, Jonathan Randall, aka Black Jack, had stolen for him. After being court martialed for disobeying an order, he was sold to Fraser after the war was over.

He was first placed with the horses and cows. The quietness of his work helped to settle his mind. Jamie then talked of sending him to the distillery, knowing with his military background, he would be an asset anywhere on property.

“You Jeremy,  can be trusted to keep  the estate safe were anything to happen to me.” He told him.

Though he didn’t know a thing about running a distillery, he has a quick mind. This was all before Claire.

He is smitten with her at first sight. Within a week of her arrival, they are walking and talking together in the evening. Until she fell for another. Now he wishes to be out of Scotland. Maybe to the colonies.

The newlyweds get into a routine. She moves in with him into the Laird’s room in the main house. The surgery becomes just a place to work.

As the distillery becomes more an actual work and less a dream, she starts heading out there at lunch. Her reasons are two fold, one to see her husband and two to check if anyone needs her help. Building and fire sometimes don’t mix well together.

One afternoon as she approaches, she sees Jamie and Jeremy on the roof of the building. Jeremy is behind him. As she moves closer, he seems to push her husband off the roof!  She starts to run. Jamie is on his back. As she reaches him, Jeremy grins at them before taken off at a run.

Hi! I’ve seen you mention it in passing (not sure if you’ve discussed it at length), but could you either drop some knowledge about the mini ice age of the Victorians (Edwardians?) and/or share any sources you may have about it? I find it fascinating (and also dream of living through a mini ice age instead of the boiling hellscape we live in now), but can’t seem to find much information about it. Much appreciated if you’re able to help!
Oh yeah, the little ice age! You’ll find more about it if you search using that term – it has a whole Wikipedia page. It seems to be kind of complicated. Scholars can’t really reach a consensus on when exactly it happened (the most common dating seems to be from the 16th to the mid-19th century?) And many now believe that it was actually several smaller periods of colder than average temperatures interspersed with relative warming.
I’ve also found that people tend to be very quick to ascribe historical fashions in particular to much colder temperatures. While that was a thing in some places and it sometimes, I’ve also looked into, say, the oldest recorded temperature records for here in Boston (1890s) and found that yes, they did in fact have to deal with many of the same summer temperatures that we have today. The probability of intense heat was different, and most notably the nights got much cooler than they tend to do in modern summer, so don’t mistake me for a climate change denier. But it’s not always as simple as saying “oh, it was colder back then, so they could wear all those layers!“ Sometimes they wore all those layers when it was exactly the same temperature as it is today
Also, while it does sound vastly appealing from our current perspective, don’t feel too nostalgic – the Little Ice Age did cause widespread drought, crop failure, and famine.

Ask game where izuku time travel and somehows saves hawks which leads for massive hero worship of him
1- izuku is yeeted backwards through time and crashes outside the shanty Tomie and Keigo lived in. Tomie hides and, curious, Keigo peaks outside to see a darkly costumed hero in a torn cape and cowl sparking lightning and spasming bits of darkness. he thinks that is very cool but also probably dangerous, ready to fly off.
Izuku, who looks around and has no idea where he is, sees the shack and heads closer to try and see if anyone is there and can tell him where he is
2- Tomie freaks and grabs Keigo to run, but Izuku is able to pretty easily catch up and pull out his hero license, apologizing for the scare and getting halfway through asking where he is when he stops because either Hawks has a secret lovechild that Shoto and Fumikage are going to go crazy about, or, this kid is just Hawks. which means he's time traveled. And he knows exactly what's going to go down, how the commission botches the war arc, leading him directly to the runnaway arc he was in the middle of- not to mention Keigo is like, six years old right now and looks just like all the other small kids Izuku's helped before.
3- Izuku is like "Hey, actually, can i like, buy you some food? or we can go to a safehouse? from your villain husband/father that i know about?" and that spooks Tomie enough that she tells Keigo to fly away as fast as he can, but he comes back in under a minute to help her, only to see Izuku letting her go back inside the house, and muttering to himself about how to help them.
He could try to hunt down All Might, but he doesn't know if his number is the same this far back, or the ramifications of dealing with time, or if Gran Torino will believe him, or if his teacher has even started at UA at this point, and Keigo lands and says he sounds like he knows a lot of heroes.
Danger Sense didn't warn Izuku and he's startled, but nods, saying the problem is a lot of them don't know him yet.
4- Izuku thinks about it for a while with the vestiges as he takes Keigo into town and brings food back to the home for dinner, figuring out what he should do because none of them know what to do about time travel. Eventually, he decides to take Third's advice- he doesn't know any heroes that will believe him or can risk causing a paradox with, but he does know a hero he can blackmail whose life choices he probably can't make any worse.
To say that Endeavor is surprised when some stranger waving a hero license in the air and carrying two civilians with his quirk lands in his front yard is an understatement.
5- Izuku gets Enji to talk with him in his office while he shoves Tomie and Keigo at Rei and the three todokids, telling him everything- that he's from the future, that he can prove it with a lot of information that he really shouldn't have and a very legit license from the future, and that if Izuku is about right about when he time traveled, Rei is very recently pregnant with Shoto so Enji better get it together before Touya tries to kill the infant threatening to replace him as central piece in the mini eugenics experiment he decided to run. He tells him off for caring about the ranking system more than the reason heroes exist, warns him that he should probably see if he can stop the commission from training the kid they currently are training to be their super illegal and immoral assassin before she snaps and kills the president, and then decides 'oh what the hell, predictions of death have been great motivators in mine and All Might's experience!' and tells Enji that unless he wants to be killed by a quirk affected Shoto minutes after killing Touya, he'll prevent that future by changing things right now.
Izuku leaves the office with a stunned Enji and announces that Endeavor oh so kindly offered to make sure that Tomie and Keigo have safe housing and food. He ruffles Keigo's hair, tells him that he should be proud of working so hard to improve his quirk so quickly that he's practically faster than Izuku, who was so bad with his quirk originally that it was out of control and broke his own bones, recommends Touya look into Sheild Industries for support tech, waves at a shy Fuyumi, and then slips the kids a phone number for absolute emergencies with the passcode 'one for all' written on it. Then he leaves.
Keigo watches him go and announces that he must be the greatest hero ever, and Keigo is going to be just like him one day.
Touya takes offense since obviously Endeavor is the greatest hero and then Touya will be. Keigo looks at the still stunned Enji, then back at the very cool multi quirk silhouette, and decides that Touya's tastes cannot be trusted.
+1- Several years later, Endeavor watches the sports festival and pulls out his phone, calling Touya and only saying "no" because he knows that Touya is also watching and seeing the bone breaking kid who looks just like the hero from ages ago. Touya protests that he didn't want the kid for internships anyway, just thought he must be that old heroe's son. Enji goes 'nah, it's him, before he time traveled' and does not elaborate even as Touya asks if he's joking. Keigo is already filing the paperwork for the internship, and says he already knew that, because Izuku muttered a lot- but he's not going to let him vanish without a word this time! not to mention, his agency is going to be the one to make the first official merch that Keigo has been dying to collect for over a decade now. Touya questions Keigo's tastes, and Izuku ends up picking another agency.
