GZY & GSJ knew!
Tumblr media
such a good shot (also side note, when i saw this and the other gif of the other group of Gongs, I kind of knew spoiler wise who were going to make it to the end/near the end.)
Tumblr media
That's where the mysterious weapon box came from! At least that was explained. Bc I was so confused on why she and YWS were cool with each other, and then Lady Wu Ji was like here's a gift from your father-in-law only for it to harm YWS.
Tumblr media
Look at them working together!
Tumblr media
Does GYZ seriously test every poison and antidote he makes on himself??
Tumblr media
Got to be happy about the sailing ship and their happiness before it comes crashing down in the last episode 😭😭

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌
Tumblr media
now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.
then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.
here is the song if you wanna listen to it. 🎶
youtube
turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.
however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.
SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

[mdzs] In depth analysis of Lan Xichen’s name
It’s been 2.5 years since my last MDZS name analysis(!!), and since then I’ve gotten so many requests from the fandom wanting to see more. So here’s to everyone who have enjoyed reading my posts so far - today I’ll be diving into Lan Xichen’s name. Sit back as this is an interesting one!
Tumblr media
Lan Xichen is his zi ,or courtesy name, which means ‘chancellor of the morning sunlight’ (Xi 曦 - morning sunlight; Chen 臣- chancellor, minister).
It derives from the poem ‘Xian Qing Fu’ 《闲情赋》 (Ode to a Quiet Life) by Eastern Jin dynasty recluse poet Tao Yuan Ming 陶渊明. Tao is remembered for his appreciation of beauty and serenity of the natural world around him, often admiring the good of others and documenting his wishes for a peaceful and fair society. (NB: The majority of Chinese people would know of the phrase ‘世外桃源’ - Xanadu / fantastical place of great idyllic magnificence and beauty, which originated from him.) This particular poem is a long study on the beauty and virtues of an idealised woman, and is known today as one of the most iconic bodies of work celebrating a woman’s true inner qualities. “悲晨曦之易夕,感人生之长勤” (bēi chén xī zhī yì xī, gǎn rén shēng zhī cháng qín), translates figuratively to ‘it is regrettable that the light of this morning will soon be replaced by the dark night, reminding people that life is filled with endless fatigue.’
One can’t help but draw parallels to Xichen’s life - he was always a noble figure, approached people with sincerity, treated everyone with an equal level of respect and believed deeply in those he stayed close to. But life could not always pay back what he gave to others, as he learnt of his trusted friend Jin Guangyao’s corrupt ways and betrayal - the light that was replaced by darkness.
I find it fascinating how poet Tao’s perspective of the world is so similar to Xichen’s. Tao is known for spending much of his life in reclusion, living in the countryside, receiving only a few guests he had a strong bond with, reading and indulging in his love for poetry. As a talented and knowledgeable man, he spent a decade of his life as a politician - but soon lost faith in a system that was characterised by nepotism, violence, corruption and civil disorder. Torn between ambition and the desire to retreat into solitude, he chose the latter. I wonder if MXTX drew inspiration from this, as Xichen also began as a leader in the cultivators’ world, is a huge lover and collector of literature, and after all the turmoil also decided to withdraw into reclusion.
Xichen’s birth name is 涣 (Huàn), which has two main meanings: 1) ‘melting of snow’; 2) ‘water dispersing in all directions’. His title is 泽芜君 (zé wú jūn), which literally means ‘nourisher of barren lands’ (泽润 - to nourish, bestow; 平芜 - land overgrown with weeds). Combining the two, we can understand his name to mean ‘water disperses in all directions, nourishing everything it touches’. 泽 in Chinese is used specifically to describe bestowing something deep, long-lasting and meaningful (as supposed a one time gift/favour - which would be 惠). In the book, MXTX also describes him as “清煦温雅,款款温柔” (meaning ‘warm, gracious and elegant, gentle in all aspects’). Clearly, his name highlights the grace and kindness he radiates and bestows on everyone around him. He is the keeper of peace and righteousness.
Bonus:
Note that the word Huan 涣 has a water particle, similar to his brother Lan Wangji’s birth name Zhan 湛 - it brings to mind the ‘Twin Jades of Lan’ title for the brothers, with a water element - like Pisces.
Interestingly, in ‘I Ching’ or ‘Book of Changes’, the ancient Chinese divination text which contains of 64 hexagrams, there is a 涣 hexagram:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, it represents how gentleness can summon greatness. I copy the below from iching-online.com:
Tumblr media
In simple terms, it symbolises water that washes away dirt and baptises new life within oneself. And the aftermath is precisely Zhan 湛 in his brother’s name, meaning crystal clear water.
Other name analyses:
Wei Wuxian
Lan Wangji
Jiang Wanyin
Lan Sizhui

Could you mention the spirit foxes you know please? The best known is Su Daji, and I know the story of Jade Fox (she's so cool. She fought Erlang), but I've wanted to know more. I also knows about the fox spirits from Strange tales from a Chinese studio.
JTTW fox spirits die so fast sadly.
JTTW foxes are like the Red Shirts of demons
The earliest "maybe" fox spirit is Yu the Great's wife, the Girl of Tushan. Basically, when he arrived at Tushan, he saw a nine-tailed fox, heard the locals singing about it, and decided to marry a girl there.
There are two readings of the text: 1) the fox is just an auspicious sign from Heaven, telling Yu to get married, and 2) the fox is an avatar, or transformation of the Girl of Tushan. Later Qing legends certainly favor the second reading, with foxes referring to themselves as the descendents of Tushan.
The other "maybe" fox spirit is Chunhu("Pure Fox"), Houyi's wife. Now, I heard you asking: "But wait! Isn't Houyi's wife Chang'e?" Well...there are actually two "Yi" in Chinese mythos-history.
The "Yi" people are most familiar with, who shot down the Sun Crows, supposedly lived in the time of Sage King Yao, while the "Yi" married to Chunhu was from the Xia dynasty.
(Rough timeline: Yao —> Shun —> Yu the Great —> his son Qi, founder of the Xia dynasty)
Basically, Houyi usurped Qi's son, Tai Kang, and seized his throne, then Han Zhuo usurped and killed him while he was out hunting.
According to 左传 + Qu Yuan's 天问 and 离骚, Chunhu played a vital part in this: a dark-skinned beauty, she was originally Hebo's wife, until Houyi killed her husband with an arrow and forcefully seized her, then she plotted with Han Zhuo to murder Houyi and became his wife.
Since Chunhu could also be written as Xuanhu("Dark Fox"), some scholars suggested that her clan might have used a black fox as their totem or worshipped such a divine beast. Unlike the Girl of Tushan, the implication of her being an actual fox wasn't as strong, but she did fit into that "plotting temptress" stereotype that would later be connected to fox spirits.
There is this one strange trivia in the Northern-Southern dynasty 搜神记 that goes: "All foxes come from this one slutty woman in ancient times called Ah Zi(阿紫), who turned into a fox, therefore fox spirits often refer to themselves with that name too."
The Ming dynasty novel, 三遂平妖传, is all about this family of foxes and how they were behind Wang Ze's failed rebellion in the Song dynasty: "Sagely Old Lady", her daughter Hu Mei'er/Yong'er, and her son Hu Chu'er/Zuo Chu.
When they passed Wu Zetian's tomb, her ghost appeared in Sagely Old Lady's dream, telling her that she would soon reincarnate into a male body, and that Mei'er is actually the reincarnation of her paramour, Zhang Liulang, and they promised to be husband and wife in every life.
When she woke up, Mei'er was missing, so she just went on and cultivated 72 Daoist arts using the Heavenly Scroll this Egg Monk guy stole from a cave. Meanwhile, Mei'er landed in an enunch's garden, was adopted as his daughter, tried to charm the Crown Prince by disguising herself as a consort and got insta-killed by Guan Yu the guardian deity.
She reincarnated again as Yong'er, and reunited with Sagely Old Lady and her brother, who taught her Daoist arts and began to plot a rebellion. They managed to convince Wang Ze, a minor official, into leading it——who just happened to be Wu Zetian's reincarnation, so naturally Yong'er married him.
Alas, their rebellion was not to be: Egg Monk, disgusted by their behaviors, left to seek help from the Mystic Lady of the Nine Heavens, and, with the arts she taught, crushed the rebels.
Yong'er and Zuo Chu got struck dead by divine thunderbolts, while Sagely Old Lady was spared thanks to her fellow heavenly foxes' pleadings, but sentenced to guard the Heavenly Scroll forever.
This wouldn't be the first time Wu Zetian was associated with foxes: in the Qing dynasty novel, Flowers in the Mirror(镜花缘), she straight up is the Heart Moon Fox(心月狐) incarnate, one of the 28 Lunar Mansions.
She reincarnated because the two Sui emperors kept complaining in the Underworld about how they were usurped by the Tang, until the Celestial Court went "Okay, fine, we'll send one of our own to usurp the Tang dynasty too. Happy?"
Which, like Daji, is very much in line with the "A powerful woman? *gasp* She must be a fox demoness!" literary tradition.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

Not everyone thinking Lady Wu Ji tricked GZY's dad for the past 20 something years, but he also knew she was Wufeng and offered her a second chance until she learned her father & brother were still Wufeng's hostages.
OMG does GSJ really no longer suspect Shangguan Qian at all anymore? What about Gong Yuan Zhi? Wasn't he set on Shangguan Qian being Wufeng? Why is he still just letting her be? It's Shangguan Qian isn't it who caused the explosion and left Yuan Zhi's glove there to frame him, but those two are too blind see it's her. They're still so focused on YWS and GZY while she's also pushing them that way too to keep the conflict btw them going!

Skywells in Chinese Architecture
Thanks to the BBC for their essay on Skywells.    A skywell, or “tian jing” (天井) in Mandarin, is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China. Different from a northern Chinese courtyard, or “yuan zi” (院子), a skywell is smaller and less exposed to the outdoor environment. They are commonly seen in homes dating to Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, which were…

Immortal Samara - Ep 22
The meeting between Yan Dan and Ying Yuan’s reincarnated selves was a little underwhelming and lacklustre compared to her long-awaited meeting with Yu Mo.
With Yu Mo, it felt a lot of more satisfying because we saw how he spent 900 year painstakingly trying to find her, and there were so many instances when he almost did but then they just missed each other, so when he finally found her in the end, the emotional payoff was much more impactful.
With with Tang Zhou, it feels like we’re back to square one where Yang Zi and Cheng Yi now have no chemistry again and have to build it back up. They’re a much anticipated meeting after all the angst and pain they went through, but it fell kinda flat. We get a brief moment where he catches her in the air and they stare into each other’s eyes and feel a very faint glimpse of recognition and a pang of lingering feelings from a past life threatening to bubble to the surface, but I was hoping for something more intense, you know? They brush it off and resume their mutual suspicion for each other because she’s a demon (with no demon scent) and he’s a demon hunter.
But I guess this is intentional. The writers need to stir up some chemistry between Yang Dan and Yu Mo in order give us some reason to root for the SML. And tbh, it’s working. Yan Dan is so happy and carefree in Yu Mo’s demon tribe (and not to mention her reunion with the turtle she saved, unbeknownst to her, and who has now cultivated into Zi Lin). But you just know that Tang Zhou is going to mess her up all over again. She’s doomed to fall in love with someone is isn’t allowed to love her back.
Yu Mo is also much more suave  after 900 years of searching for her in the mortal world, and he’s even changed his hairstyle to something much more flattering to match his newfound charisma and maturity. But he’s also still such a puppy dog for her.
But Yan Dan is currently like a blank sheet of paper. She has no life experience. She has no name and no memory of her past. Doesn’t understand what love or hate is. But she knows what happiness and fun is, and she still has the same dream of being a renowned scriptwriter. So the core of her personality is still there.
Honestly, I’m really liking how tight and consistent the plot is so far. I’m really curious about how this reincarnation arc is going to play out. I want to see Tang Zhou fall for her first against his better judgment, like how Ying Yuan did. I want to see Yan Dan be wary of Tang Zhou because of those underlying feelings of betrayal that are still buried deep down in the fabric of her soul, even though Ying Yuan forcefully stripped her memories away.
Side note: I appreciate that Zhi Xi is trying to make amends, and I feel bad for Lu Ming who no longer has any friends my his side, but is trying his best to protect Ying Yuan because it’s what Yan Dan would have wanted.

I was always a little confused that some students made fun of the rival sect just because they had "monster" students. I never quite understood if it was because these students had committed crimes or bad acts but were still accepted as students, or if it was because they were cultivated Yaoguais? one of the immortals was an immortal crane, so why did they make fun? or were they just making fun of the appearance? or is it like a case of discrimination against yaoguais?
Honestly, I think it is a mix of both. On one hand, the Jie Sect did have some unsavory members like Lv Yue the plague god and Ma Yuan the man-eater, and when Patriach Tongtian and Yuanshi Tianzun were facing off before the Immortal Killing Formation, that was what Yuanshi Tianzun focused on: that his Jie Sect disciples were acting unruly and strong-arming people and holding onto grudges as a result of his indiscriminate admission (Cha. 77).
On the other hand, when their opponents mocked them, the admission of cultivated beasts did seem to be brought up:
First was the shit-talk Guangcheng Zi allegedly made, where he said that "Whether horned or furred, wet-born or egg-born, [they] all mingled as one crowd"(不分披毛带角之人,湿生卵化之辈,皆可同群共处).
Second, during the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation arc, after the three yaoguai disciples of the Jie Sect was subdued and became mounts of Wenshu, Puxian and Cihang(FSYY's Daoist-ized version of Bodhisattva Manjusri, Samantabhadra and Guanyin), Lao Zi ordered Wenshu to take the azure lion right in front of Patriarch Tongtian and was like "With such creatures under your sect, how could you still act so high-and-mighty? What a joke!" (Cha. 83)
So personally, I did think the Chan Sect was at least a little prejudiced against yaoguais.
As for the White Crane Boy: he was never explicitly stated to be a cultivated crane in the novel, unlike members of the Jie Sect who were yaoguais, though he did transform into a white crane to snatch Shen Gongbao's head away(Cha. 37).
Everything else after this is context and theories, so take it with a grain of salt.
If you read Gui Zhizhong's translation of FSYY, the introduction stated that the Chan-Jie conflict was supposed to mirror the historical conflict between Quanzhen and Zhengyi Sects in the Ming dynasty, a theory that some scholars, like Liu Cunren, subscribed to.
However, I do not subscribe to that theory personally. Rather, my take is a blend of Li Yihui's hypothesis about the origin of the names "Chan" and "Jie"(《封神演义》考论), and Meulenbeld's book, "Demonic Warfare: Daoism, Territorial Networks, and the History of a Ming Novel".
Basically, the former said that Chan came from 阐扬正教("Promote the True/Righteous Religion"), and Jie, 海外有截, a line from the Book of Poems(诗经) that was taken literally as "there was a Jie Sect overseas".
The latter pointed out the similarity between FSYY's overall narrative of "deification through death" and the Daoist ritual of sublimation + the integration of local deities into organized Daoism; specifically, "sublimation" is meant to cleanse and transform orphaned and vengeful spirits, and oftentimes, the Thunder Ritualist school would subdue local spirits of folk worship——yaoguais, ghosts, etc. and make them into subordinates.
So what does all this mean? Well, through this lens, the Chan Sect is less a mirror of any particular sects, and more an idea of "orthodox/proper Daoism", while the Jie represents "unorthodox/heretical Daoism": the incredibly diverse Chinese folk religions where the strange, the demonic and the marginal were often venerated alongside popular mainstream gods.
As such, the Chan Sect's distaste for the Jie Sect's indiscriminate admission of disciples might be a reflection of how organized Daoist sects + state religion saw folk beliefs. Yet, at the same time, the solution wasn't to wipe them out(you can't), but to subdue, transform, and integrate local gods into their temple networks and pantheons.
Thus, almost everyone who died in the War of Investiture got deified regardless of sect allegiance or species(at least in the version I'm reading, the list of names in Cha.99 differ depending on editions), and Patriarch Tongtian, despite his multiple defeat, wasn't punished by his and Yuanshi Tianzun's mutual master, Hongjun.
