Listen, I know Utena and Anthy being 14 is Thematically Relevant and important framing for the horrific abuse they are both experience, but, to quote Lindsay Ellis...

Framing and aesthetics supersede the rest of the text. Always, always, always.

Telling me these girls are fourteen does not work when they are drawn with impossibly long shoujo legs. They do not look fourteen. They never look fourteen.

Utena's aesthetics are hugely important artistically, yes, so I don't think prioritizing them in this instance was a wrong choice. But I think, if they were gonna priorize them, if that specific aesthetic style was so important, they should have bitten the bullet, and aged up those characters.

Because no one at all can internalize they are fourteen when they are drawn like young adults. It immensely softens the bite of their canon age. Either they should have drawn them their own age, or they should have aged them up.

I first read these sentences at about sixteen or seventeen. I'm thirty now. I finished the Gunslinger the first time and set it down, returned it to the library (the school one, I think) and ruminated on the book for another year, deciding to give it a go sometime in my senior year of high school.

The second time I attempted the tower, I knew what I was getting into, but it still didn't quite hit. A third attempt another year later and I hit the ground running, grabbing as many of the books as I could from the used bookstore just off my college campus and when I stopped being able to find them, borrowing the library's copies to finish the series in the span of a week.

This specific fucking line tho.

I was so scared when the movie came out that I was going to have to watch this fucking scene happen. Again. And then it fucking DIDNT

Because Ka is a fucking wheel and Roland Deschain finally managed to break that part of the cycle and we didn't get any more.
