Frenkie de Jong's reaction to being given Mercedes explains Man Utd's transfer stance.
Manchester United's relentless pursuit for a humble player in Frenkie De Jong shows the club are heading in the right direction under Erik ten Hag
By Bruna Reis
Tumblr media
Frenkie de Jong's "humble" reaction to being given a Mercedes has told Manchester United everything they need to know as they continue pressing for a transfer.
United are working hard to land the Barcelona star this summer as he is regarded as a top priority for Erik ten Hag, who worked with the midfielder at Ajax and is a known admirer of his talents. While Barca are willing to listen to offers for their player, one thing standing in the way of De Jong's switch to Old Trafford is the fee.
The Spanish giants recently rejected an opening offer of £51.3million plus a potential £8.5m in add-ons, but are set to improve their offer and put forward a bid of £60m to tempt the struggling club, who need to sell in order to bolster their ranks.
Ten Hag is desperate for a reunion with the playmaker as he continues to build his own squad at Old Trafford. The Dutch boss is very familiar with the humble person behind the player, who once felt "embarrassed" after being given a Mercedes upon his arrival at Ajax.
"That mindset is probably why he joined Ajax," his father John said back in 2019. "After signing a contract in Amsterdam, he got a Mercedes from the club. ‘But when he showed it, he felt embarrassed’. I call him Scrooge McDuck sometimes. He earns a lot, but rarely spends.
"When he had won a trophy and went to visit grandpa and grandma, he left the trophy in the car. He thought it was too 'showy.’ No prima donna attitude, only a helpful human being.
Tumblr media
"He just signed his contract and asked me: do you want a new car? I didn’t want to, because I drive a Suzuki and it’s top, but he did give me and his mother a little envelope. It was a wonderful moment. He lives on himself right now and has bought a house in Amsterdam with his girlfriend. When he has some free time, he comes over."
Over recent years, United spent £1billion on transfers but even those signings have left a lot to desire, especially the lack of humble individuals representing the club. This could perhaps explain the trophy drought at Old Trafford, having last won major silverware in the Europa League final against Ajax in 2017.
With Ten Hag's rebuild, it is important that the new recruits have the right mindset and character that fit the culture of the club. Humility is what has led the club to be successful in the past; players who had only been focussed on making the club successful and moved mountains to help their team.

There are ads here on tumblr as well. Tiktok is putting warnings on videos of people who are only mentioning what is happening in palestine. Instagram is deleting accounts of people who are reporting straight from gaza.
Biden questioned the number of deaths reported in Gaza, after which the health ministry came out with a report over 200 hundred pages long with personal information on the killed individuals.
24 journalists have been killed in 21 days.
Yesterday internet and phone services in Gaza went down, due to the heavy bombardments.
The voice of the people in palestine is being silenced in every way you can imagine.
So the least you can do, is share what is going on. Use all your platforms. Even this one.

I've seen non Iranians admiring the Islamic Republic national football team for not singing the national anthem. And then they were confused as to why iranians were happy that the team lost. Yes not singing the anthem might have consequences for them, but it won't change the fact that these people went to visit Raisi, the Islamic Republic president and bowed to him, posed happily for pictures while we were dealing with Kiam Pirfalak news, and said they don't care about politics and what's going on Iran in an interview, stating that they will focus on the game only. Not singing the anthem is nothing in comparison. And you might think they were under pressure. So were other athletes in Iran, let's see what they did:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Picture on the right is Elnaz Rekabi, an Iranian rock climber who was the first athlete to take off her hijab during Mahsa Amini protests to show her solidarity with people. She's currently under house arrest. she wasn't the first Iranian woman ever doing that. On the left, that's Shohreh Bayat, her story is so sad.
In many interviews I've seen of her, she always cries when she says her story. She was to referee the final of the Women's World Chess Championship a couple of years ago. While in another country she decided to wear her hijab loosely in an act of rebellion. She got warning from Islamic Republic twice and everytime she made it worse. She was asked to apologize but she refused, saying that she wouldn't apologize for what she believes in. At last, even though she wasn't ready to leave everything behind and start from scratch in a foreign country, she decided to ditch the compulsory hijab completely and never come back to Iran, because her life would be in danger if she did. Because of her choice she can't come back to visit her family anymore. her family supported her which made the authorities to force her father to resign (her father was the president of chess association in Gilan, Iran).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we had Iranian national beach soccer team. I think they were the first group who refused to sing Islamic republic national anthem. And after they got threatened to sing the anthem, they did something even more iconic. One of the players cut his imaginary hair after he scored.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we had these two scenes after scoring. They were recreating an inhuman thing Islamic republic did. The guy on the right is Khodanoor Lajei. He was murdered on bloody Friday in Zahedan. He was a Baloch guy. I'm going to post about Balochs and the thing that's been done to them by Islamic republic in details. For now know that this guy got killed in protests but this picture of him is for a couple of months back. He insulted a Basiji guy or something, Islamic republic police chained him to a pole in the middle of the city to make him an example for others, after beating him. When he asked for water they brought him a cup but they put it out of his reach in front of him and laughed at his thirst. (You see why we hate Islamic Republic, IRGC and Basij?!) The picture got out only after his death because Baloch people didn't think the rest of Iran would care about them enough to react. That broke my heart unspeakably much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With so much bravery, our national girl's basketball team has been posting photos without mandatory hijab ever since the protests have begun.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, Parmida Ghasemi, iranian archer ditching mandatory hijab inside of iran. She took it out for receiving the prize and while she was being photographed.
(Btw, non of these women "forgot" their hijab accidentally. If you're iranian you learn to never forget your hijab since you're 7, the age you start school. Without a formal head wearing you won't be allowed to attend school classes. When you grow up with it, you'll get used to it. You have no idea how weird it feels to not wear a veil in public, I'm still getting used to it.)
we've witnessed many iconic brave moves by our athletes but non of them said we don't give a shit about what's happening in Iran before the game. I'm not saying they won't be redeemed one day, I'm just saying they should work to win their respect back.

Sport is not beyond politics
Tumblr media
Oleksandr Pelyeshenko is an athlete from Luhansk Oblast. In 2016, he came one step short of a medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics (fourth place).
How many Ukrainians will never be able to build careers, and families, and live their lives while Russian athletes can and will keep pursuing their goals in sports? At the same time, represent their bloodthirsty country, which is Russia itself. This is unfair. It should not be this way. Make Russia pay!

Why I hate Golf
This is the Takapuna Golf Course in Auckland, New Zealand.
Tumblr media
It is in the middle of Auckland's north shore suburbs.
According to their website, they are one of the most popular golf courses in Aotearoa and have an annual visitor count of 60,000 people. They don't clarify if that is individual unique visitors or recounts, but lets be generous and say its unique visitors. 60,000, not bad.
This is Eden Park Stadium (the little square on the right) and oh look there's another golf course on the left there, ignore that one for now.
Tumblr media
(the above two images are at the same scale)
Eden park has a capacity of 50,000 people. Ed Sheeran was here earlier this year and sold out the two nights he performed. That's 100,000 people in a weekend all in that little red square. 60,000 in a year no longer seems so great.
60,000 people per year is also only 160 people per day. 160 visitors to a golf course that is 470,000 square meters in area. Now the average property size in Auckland is 500 square meters. So the golf course takes up the area of 940 houses.
940 homes worth of land for 160 people.
And that is Auckland housing sizes. Auckland is horribly designed and very spread out. Let's instead look at Barcelona, considered one of the most well designed cities in the world.
This is Takapuna golf course side by side with Barcelona
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The scale is as close to being equal as I could get them, I don't have ArcGIS data for Barcelona so had to use google maps)
Each red square overlaid on Takapuna Golf Course is exactly 133m in height/width, the same size as each city block in Barcelona, road width included.
There are 23 Barcelona blocks worth of space in Takapuna Golf Course with room to spare. About 640 people live in each Barcelona block, that's 15000 people.
15000 peoples worth of homes and living spaces, sacrificed so 160 people can play golf in a day.
Now this is just one golf course in a big city, what's 15,000 people to a city of 1.6 million, who cares right?
Here is a wider shot of Auckland City.
Tumblr media
Those red dots? They're golf courses.
There are 16 golf courses inside the metropolitan area of Auckland City (4 not pictured as Auckland is too spread out to get one clean screenshot). Keep in mind these are not rural golf courses out in the country, these are right beside housing developments and shopping malls. And for the record I could not find a single golf course in the Barcelona metropolitan area, you had to go out into the country before finding one.
So lets multiply that 15,000 people by 16 golf courses?
240,000 people.
With Auckland City's golf courses you could house 240,000 people comfortably with some good urban planning.
That is why I hate golf.

Pic context: Talking about the exy stadium at USC considering the fact that USC is a real school
I love how Nora just invents things in order to avoid complications with real-life things.
Like, using USC's football stadium as the exy stadium too would take a lot of work to figure out how that would be possible. Solution: invent a new stadium!
Having the characters play a real sport that already exists would mean looking into all the rules and regulations and history, etc, and there could be multiple elements of the sport that work against the plot of the story or complicate it in some way. Solution: invent a new sport!
I mean, it gives her full creative control over what happens in the story, and we as readers get to learn about a cool new thing without feeling the need to fact-check every element. Tbh, it makes so much sense to me.
Like, go off! Make stuff up! It's your world. We're just reading and enjoying and becoming obsessed with it!!!

Do you think Peter learned how to breakdance when he got his powers just to add flare to his movement?
i think peter parker had been trying and failing to breakdance long before the spider-bite, and is just happy to discover he finally has the upper body strength to actually pull it off now

that last sentence is so powerful considering everything that's going on
including recent events in which french senators are currently trying to pass a bill to criminalize critiqueing the state of israel/ speaking up against zionism: "those who insult the state of israel would face two years imprisonment and a fine of EUR 75,000 "
imagine making it illegal to speak up against a state that has bombed civilians with white phosphorus
imagine making it illegal to speak up against a state that is carrying out collective punishment against the entire population in Gaza, as we speak
this might soon be the world we live in

i’m so curious to know what Kevin’s mother was like lol did she purposely leave Kevin in the care of Tetsuji? if she purposely left Kevin to the care of Tetsuji was she totally unaware of his true nature or did she just not care or ? is there a will somewhere that the Moriyamas destroyed where her true intentions were actually for Kevin to be left to Wymack’s care upon her death? what was a woman who was stringing along Wymack like? and did Wymack have his sneaking suspicions about Kevin being his son before Kevin told him so when Kevin came moping into his office that day in TKM, did Wymack feel sick to his stomach and the reason that Neil describes it as “going poorly” is bc Wymack is so upset at himself for not listening to his gut and therefore not being able to care for Kevin sooner before he went through a lifetime of trauma just like Wymack did himself? so many questions

With one toss, Camryn Rogers rewrote the Canadian record books.
The Richmond, B.C., native won hammer throw gold at the World Athletics Championships on Thursday in Budapest with her initial heave of 77.22 metres.
Rogers's victory completed Canada's first-ever hammer-throw double after fellow B.C. native Ethan Katzberg won the men's event.
Rogers, 24, is also the second Canadian woman to win a gold medal at worlds, and the first since Perdita Felicien in 2003. She improves on the silver she obtained at 2022 worlds in Eugene, Ore., when she became the first Canadian woman to win a medal in a field event.
