fyodor did well by sheltering his childhood love, and then she ran away. but it's alright, he'll bring her right back. yan!fyodor x gn!reader, mild dazai x gn!reader but they're meant to be platonic tags/warnings: captivity, reader gets tortured!!! stockholm syndrome, years and years of manipulation, gaslighting(kinda), violence, blood, and permanent injury done to the reader, plsss read with caution

To him, you were his one and only love. You were the ideal he wanted to create. A weak, fickle human that devotedly clung to him. You provided him with that first taste of Godhood. He could pluck adoration off your lips and feel divinity in your touch.
And then you betrayed him.
And then you betrayed him.
You, his first follower. His first believer. His Eve.
For all of Fyodor’s wisdom, his beliefs served as a terrible blind spot. He never even suspected it. To him, your life was perfect. You were his crowned follower, his one and only, you sat in pretty apartments and watched as the mice brought ruin to the world. Nothing ever affected you in your pretty glass cage. Nothing except the devil’s delusions.
His insanity had seeped into your own mind. At first, you did admire him. He was Fyodor, your protector. Hunger felt smaller when he was there, his body warm against yours as you huddled together during those ugly rainy nights. Both of you have seen the worst side of the world. You’ve watched it burn at the hands of those ability users Fyodor despised so viciously. He taught you hatred. And you always clung to it.
Everyone except Fyodor is bad.
That was the belief he instilled in you. And then Dazai found you, an eccentric brunette man with a myriad of bandages and scars. He had thought the lush apartment was Fydor’s. Never had Dazai assumed Fyodor would cherish someone. But you were worthless, with no ability or connections or even common sense. It seemed that you were tailor made for Fyodor. Shoved in a cage and left to wait for your God’s return.
At the time you were terrified. Fyodor hadn’t let you speak to anyone for years. The moment that he could establish himself as this omnipotent God, he made sure you were isolated. He’d come back depicting how terrifying the bleak outside world is. It wasn’t hard to believe. You grew up in the slums of Russia, you’ve already seen the worst. It wasn’t difficult to convince you that every corner of the world was equally terrible. Every piece and country and meadow would give you nothing but torment. You could only be happy with Fyodor.
So why did your world feel so empty?
“My, this is uncomfortable,” Dazai joked. He was awfully casual for someone who had just broken in. You huddled against the window, knees to your chest, fully focused on the opened doors. For all your years here, you couldn’t have ever opened them. You assumed it was the tools that you lacked. Or maybe you were too stupid for it. But you've never seen them opened by anyone except Fyodor.
“Do you own this place, miss?”
“No,” you whispered. Fyodor never prepared you for this. Fyodor told you no one would find you. He said it was a good thing. You lost your safety now. The glass cage has been broken.
“Do you know who does?”
Silence.
Dazai sighed, you were obviously terrified. He couldn’t even catch your eyes. But you also made no move to stop him as he looked around, examining all the objects about the place. That served as enough confirmation. Fyodor’s clothes were visible inside the wardrobe, and there was even a note left on the kitchen countertop signed in his lovely name. It was in Russian, so Dazai couldn’t quite judge the contents. He only knew the signature.
So why did the demon keep a little lamb locked away? Dazai had yet to learn just how worthless you are, so he kept his distance. It wasn’t improbable that you might just be a weapon more deadly than the Demon himself.
But it was you who spoke next, voice quivering. “How did you open the doors?”
“Hm, why should I tell you?”
Your head echoed your greatest fear. Fyodor is right. People are horrible. He won't tell me anything out of kindness.
Dazai had walked closer now. He was growing less and less certain that you were a threat. In fact, you shrinked further away from him. Body pressed against the glass of your gable window. “I’ll answer your question,” he announced slowly, “If you answer one of my own. But you have to be honest.” He was looking down at you.
It took you a moment to give him a nod. “Okay.”
“Why are you here with Fyodor?”
You were surprised that he knew about the raven haired Demon, the shock visible all across your face. But the deals a deal, and you desperately wanted to know the path he took towards this place. So you can recreate it and finally see this wretched world Fyodor took from you. You needed to see it for yourself. Even if you might end up crawling back to him.
“I’ve always been with him. We just move around a lot. He says it’s dangerous.”
“Yes, but why does he keep you here?”
“Because it’s dangerous? Isn’t the entire world half ruined?”
“By what?”
“I don’t know. Fyodor only said it’s ruined. And dangerous. He always says that word: dangerous.”
Dazai began to understand a little more about you now. You weren’t strong, you were shaking at the sight of someone, and what’s more the apartment gave away your relationship too easily. The single bed, shared dresser, and perfumed notes. Dazai had just found someone even the insane Fyodor loved.
“Now my question, please. How did you get in here?”
“Want me to show you?”
Maybe you shouldn’t have trusted him. But Dazai’s smile was as sick as Fyodor’s, and in your poor tormented head that was a trustworthy thing. He’s like Fyodor, it means he’s smart and caring and all those bad things he does are done out of love.
It’s funny how your rotten love for Fyodor helped you escape. Guiding you to mouth a desperate yes and allow for this unknown man to let you walk freely again.
For all your life, you’ve had Fyodor on your shoulder. Through the good and the bad, he was there. In the past you loved him. But now, you saw beyond his lies. The world Dazai had shown you was beautiful. The sun shone on smiling and happy faces. People went about their day without a care in the world. There was nothing wrong here.
Fyodor lied. And you were finally free from the doubt he seeped in you.
And then the Devil himself ascended to bring you back. You were just going about your day, enjoying the life Dazai had breathed into you. He was kind, and his kindness wasn’t sharp like Fyodor’s. He even let you occupy his tiny apartment. So the mornings were your time to cook, clean, and explore the city. You never expected to see Fyodor out of the corner of your eye. Smiling. Waiting.
You didn’t want to go back. His face served as nothing but an ugly reminder of how blinded you were by him. His bird, his dove, his caged angel. You never asked for any of that. He just swept you up in his arms and kept you in place before either of you was old enough to even think properly. You didn’t know any better. Fyodor used to be all you had.
He didn’t bother approaching you. He was in no rush. As days passed all he’d do is simply walk by you, cold eyes meeting your own. He loved the confusion on your face. The terror and insecurity in whether you’ve made the right decision or not.
And just as you were on the verge of snapping, begging Dazai to not leave you alone, something just had to come up. Dazai was needed, and you couldn’t take up his time. It felt wrong to repay him by more silly burdens. So you never told him why you were terrified. You simply let him go.
The next time you awoke, after a lonely night in the now empty apartment you shared, it was because of a sharp pain across your legs. Something was wet, but you couldn’t see. The world was dark and terrifying and you felt just as Fyodor had described you would. You couldn’t feel your legs. They hurt and the blood felt sticky and you couldn’t stop shaking.
Someone had cut the tendons near your ankles. You didn’t know it then, but you’ve just lost the ability to walk. And who took that from you? Who brought you such a horrible fate?
“You’ve just had to run, zaychik.”
Bunny.
Fyodor had called you bunny as he stripped you of your ability to run. You were on the floor, the cobblestone of this unknown place felt icy against your cheek. Everything hurt. Fyodor had pampered you too much, you realised. Things like hunger and pain which were so familiar to you as a child had become unknown. Had you always cried so much over the seeping pain, or had Fyodor planned for this too? Another piece of his sadistic game?
His foot clashed against your head. Heel digging into your cheek. Your head throbbed.
“I’ve given you everything. You had all the pretty things you used to dream of! And you repay me by running to that heretic’s side? What good are you now! You used to be perfect. Mine. Untainted. You let that disgusting dog ruin you.”
As Fyodor spoke, he’d keep moving his foot up and down. You felt your consciousness slipping again. It hurt so much. The blood, the shock, the throbbing, the darkness. Your blindfolded eyes couldn't even help you discern left from right.
Was it so bad to dream? What was wrong with you now? Fyodor was never like this. He was never angry with you. The Fyodor you knew was gentle and warm, he kept you safe. He told you that you were safe. Maybe what he meant during all those years was that you were safe from him. And Dazai Osamu had taken that safety from you.
Fyodor kept you in a large, lush bed from then on. You couldn’t walk, and Dazai had never broken in again. You don’t know what happened with him. You were too scared to ask Fyodor. Things were never the same after your escape. He allowed you less food and kept you weak. To him, your fragile body was the last thing keeping you desirable. Sometimes you’d cry at night, overtaken by guilt and regret and hatred for your predicament. On those nights the old Fyodor might’ve held you and whispered words of reassurance to you.
This, dark and vile, Demon only slapped you until you’d stop. Numbing your sadness with terror.
Fyodor’s love was never pretty, but you missed his kinder side dearly. At least then, you didn’t have to endure the horrors that he inflicted on so many others. Suddenly, you became just another victim of his. Not a childhood friend or secret lover, you were his victim.
And that's all you'd ever have in life. Fyodor and his cruelties.

i dont know enough about cases of "stockholm syndrome" since its conception but learning more about the event that spawned it made me really question its validity. "stockholm syndrome" appears to be a poor attempt at making sense of behaviors that run counter to what "conventional wisdom" would dictate. but like. irrational behaviors are more complex than a blanket diagnosis would ever be capable of explaining

"'Outside my window
it keeps reciting itself —
the snowflake sutra.'
- Jan Häll
Although written texts are venerated by all major spiritual traditions, literacy itself may be at the bottom of our current ecological crisis. Beginning roughly 5,500 years ago, the movement from oral to written culture led human beings to adopt increasingly abstract, disembodied ways of thinking that reinforced their feelings of separation from nature.
The anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss saw the problem clearly in 1974. In Myth and Meaning, he observed that the difference between societies with writing and those without written language was that the former wrote almost entirely about themselves, while the latter, so-called 'primitive' people, had a vast oral lore about plants and animals, landscape and weather, and all other aspects of the natural world.
Preliterate cultures were not anthropocentric. In fact, the earliest cave art — from Lascaux to Chauvet — is almost entirely devoid of human forms. The first 'sutras' were not texts at all, but the closely observed, lovingly rendered shapes of mammoths and woolly rhinos, lions, bison, and bears.
The best of season haiku for Winter 2023 invites us to reenter a world in which wisdom, though bypassing the inherently anthropocentric filter of written language, is once more rooted in our direct, sensual experience of the world around us. At home in his native Stockholm, the poet watches snowflakes falling ceaselessly outside his window. The very silence of that falling seems to demand that he enter more deeply into communion with them, listening with the eye rather than the ear.
In some schools of Buddhism, a sutra is seen as more than a sacred text. For instance, the Lotus Sutra is regarded by Nichiren Buddhists as 'the Entity of the Mystic Law.' Those who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the title of that sutra, unite with a universal life force that animates all things from within. Even the weather.
The poet could have described his snowflakes in terms of writing, given that he compares them to a sutra. But he makes a special point of not doing that. The snowflakes are reciting the sutra. More than that, they are the sutra.
It is a remarkably simple poem. As the snowflakes fall, covering the city on a winter day, the poet imagines them ceaselessly reciting the sutra of themselves. Or maybe he doesn't imagine that. Maybe he witnesses it — and, in so doing, unites with the Snowflakes of the Mystic Law.
It is worth noting the poet's artistry in the second line of the haiku: 'it keeps reciting itself.' [Snowflake] suggests a feeling of delicate, soundless beauty. And yet, taken as a whole, the poem conveys a feeling of tremendous cumulative power. The 'snowflake sutra' is a storm."
- Clark Strand, from "The Snowflake Sutra." Tricycle, Winter 2023.

1790 – On this date the French writer, playwright, poet and traveler Astolphe-Louis-Léonor, Marquis De Custine was born (d.1858). Born in the castle of Niderviller in Lorraine as Astolphe Louis Léonor de Custine, he was a French aristocrat and writer best known for his travel writing, in particular his account of his visit to Russia in 1839 Empire of the Czar: A Journey Through Eternal Russia. This work documents not only Custine's travels through the Russian empire, but also the social fabric, economy, and way of life during the reign of Nicholas I.
Custine was raised by his strong-willed mother and saw a lot of the writer Chateaubriand, who was his mother's lover. Custine was given an excellent education and seemed to be headed towards a life in society. He spent time in the diplomatic service, attending the Congress of Vienna, and even accepted a military commission.
In the early 1820s, Custine went along with a marriage arranged by his mother. The Marquis, later to admit his homosexuality and to live openly with a male lover, was genuinely fond of his wife and had a son with her, but she died after only a few years of marriage. Still, during the marriage he met and established a romantic relationship with an Englishman, Edward Saint-Barbe, who remained his life companion.
On October 28, 1824, after his wife had died, Custine's life was irrevocably changed. That night, Custine's unconscious body was found in the mud outside of Paris, stripped to the waist, beaten, and robbed. The attack had been carried out by a group of soldiers with one of whom Custine allegedly had attempted to have a sexual encounter. The exact reason for the attack was never proven.Nevertheless, news of the incident quickly spread around France — "From this time on to the end of his life Custine would figure, in the cruel gossip of the day, primarily as France's most distinguished and notorious homosexual."
Even though the literary salons, as opposed to the society salons, remained open to Custine, many people who were friendly with him sneered at him behind his back. His diplomatic career was also cut short by this incident. That same year, several family friends would die, Custine's infant son by his late wife, and his mother. In the years after this tragedy, Custine became very pious.
Custine gravitated toward the Romantic movement and spent the next few years writing poetry and novels. Custine wrote one play and purchased a theater to produce it, but the play closed after three performances. None of his literary works received much attention. Heinrich Heine called Custine "un demi-homme des lettres" (a half-man of letters).
Custine eventually discovered that his knack was for travel writing. He wrote a decently received account of a trip to Spain and was encouraged by Honoré de Balzac to write accounts of other "half-European" parts of Europe, like southern Italy and Russia. La Russie en 1839 went through six printings and was widely read in England, France, and Germany, but was banned in Russia.

Jansson Self-portrait
1862 – Eugene Jansson born in Stockholm (d.1915), was a Swedish painter. His parents were both born in Stockholm. His younger brother, Adrian Edward Jansson was also an artist.
Jansson's parents belonged to a social stratum straddling the working and the lower middle class, but they were interested in art and music and ambitious for their two sons, Eugène and his younger brother Adrian. Eugène went to the German School in Stockholm and took piano lessons. An attack of scarlet fever at the age of fourteen caused him health issues from which he suffered for the rest of his life, including bad eyesight and hearing and chronic kidney problems.
Jansson painted several large landscape paintings of Stockholm motifs, often in the evening or night mood, often from his home at o.2 Carpenter Street, maintained in an overall bluish tint. He is therefore known as Blue Painter. He painted scenes like long, winding lines of street lamps reflected in the water.
Later he turned increasingly to painting strong, naked male figures, who sunbathe on docks or in athletic swimming exercises. The artist was suffering from a kidney disease that forced him to regular gymnastics and swimming. Through contacts he got access to the navy bathhouse on Skeppsholmen where he found plenty of models for his figurative paintings. These canvases are characterized by a fresh and sunny atmosphere, with careful study of the anatomy. Behind these paintings of naked men was something deeper than just an interest in the human body. Jansson was gay, and lived during a time when it was forbidden by law to perform homosexual acts. The men who posed for him were often men he opened sexual relations with, so the pictures were a risk but also a way for him to live out whatever was within him.

He died June 15, 1915 at the Stockholm Nursing Home in Skara.
Art historians and critics have long avoided the issue of any possible homoerotic tendencies in the later phase of his art, but later studies have established that Jansson was certainly homosexual and appears to have had a relationships with at least one of his models. His brother, Adrian Jansson, who was himself homosexual and survived Eugène by many years, burnt all his letters and many other papers, possibly to avoid scandal (homosexuality was illegal in Sweden until 1944).

1893 – On this date the soldier and iconic war poet Wilfred Owen was born (d.1918). Regarded by many as the leading poet of the First World War, his shocking, realistic war poetry on the horrors of trench and gas warfare was heavily influenced by his friend Siegfried Sassoon and sat in stark contrast to both the public perception of war at the time, and to the confidently patriotic verse written earlier by war poets such as Rupert Brooke.
In 1915, he enlisted in the army and, after training, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment. Owen started the war as a cheerful and optimistic man, but he soon changed forever. Initially, he held his troops in contempt for their loutish behaviour, and wrote to his mother calling his company 'expressionless lumps'.
However, Owen's outlook on the war was to be changed dramatically after two traumatic experiences. Firstly, he was blown high into the air by a trench mortar, landing in the remains of a fellow officer. Soon after, he became trapped for days in an old German dugout.
After these two events, Owen was diagnosed as suffering from shell shock and sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh for treatment. While recuperating there he met a fellow poet with whom he would be forever associated - Siegfried Sassoon.
Although he had written poetry for years, his style was changed dramatically by the influence of Sassoon, who encouraged him to write from experience - this combined with his innovative use of rhyme, and his best work was a direct result - incl. Dulce et Decorum Est, Anthem for Doomed Youth & Strange Meeting. There is no evidence that their relationship was closer than friendship, but Owen's letters suggest that he was in love with Sassoon.
Owen returned to active duty in France in the summer of 1918. He could have chosen to remain on home-duty, but seems to have taken a symbolic decision to return to the front in place of Sassoon, who had been invalided out of the war by his injuries, that he might continue to document the horrors of war.
Wilfred Owen was killed in battle while attempting to cross the Sambre-Oise Canal with his unit, on November 4th 1918. The war ended a week later. His mother received the telegram on Armistice Day. News of his death reached home as the town's church bells declared peace. He was 25 years old. He was posthumously awarded the Military Cross.
Robert Graves and Sacheverell Sitwell (who also personally knew him) have stated Owen was homosexual, and homoeroticism is a central element in much of Owen's poetry. Through Sassoon, Owen was introduced to a sophisticated homosexual literary circle which included Oscar Wilde's friend Robbie Ross, writer and poet Osbert Sitwell, and C. K. Scott-Moncrieff, the translator of Proust. This contact broadened Owen's outlook, and increased his confidence in incorporating homoerotic elements into his work. Historians have debated whether Owen had an affair with Scott-Moncrieff in May 1918; Scott-Moncrieff had dedicated various works to a "Mr W.O.", but Owen never responded.
The account of Owen's sexual development has been somewhat obscured because his brother, Harold Owen, removed what he considered discreditable passages in Owen's letters and diaries after the death of their mother. Owen also requested that his mother burn a sack of his personal papers in the event of his death, which she faithfully did.

1931 – John Fraser (d.2020) was a British actor who transcended his working-class Glasgow roots to become a matinee idol, before taking a sidestep out of the limelight. In a colourful career, he showed star quality in a stream of top-flight films following his breakout role in The Dam Busters (1955). At his most famous, Fraser was dubbed the most handsome man in Britain.
As well as receiving a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960), Fraser published several books, and a brief brush with pop stardom ran parallel with his early acting career.
Fraser laid bare the ups and downs of his life with flamboyant abandon in his hugely entertaining memoir, Close Up (2004). There were richly descriptive tales of Fraser’s brief but intense affair with Soviet ballet star Rudolf Nureyev, and of being invited to Dirk Bogarde’s mansion, where Bogarde kept a Harley Davidson motorcycle in his loft. Bogarde proceeded to show Fraser how he got his kicks, giving it full throttle as he straddled the bike while watching a film poster of himself clad in black leather.
This followed the pair working together in Ralph Thomas’ Second World War-set prisoner of war drama, The Wind Cannot Read (1958). The film also starred Ronald Lewis, who came to blows with Fraser after taunting him about his sexuality. At a time when homosexuality was still illegal in Britain, Fraser was never comfortable with the pretence of being forced to live a double life.
His TV career began in 1952, playing David Balfour in Joy Harrington’s six-part adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure yarn, Kidnapped. This led to a couple of uncredited appearances in Titanic (1953) and The Desert Rats (1953). He played the male lead in a BBC production of Troilus and Cressida (1954) prior to appearing in The Dam Busters and Touch and Go (1955).
Following his BAFTA-nominated turn in The Trials of Oscar Wilde as Wilde’s lover, Bosie, Fraser acted alongside Alec Guinness in James Kennaway’s searing adaptation of his novel, Tunes of Glory (1960).
Fraser was last seen regularly on British screens as Dr. Lawrence Golding in all 47 episodes of local surgery-set drama, The Practice (1985). His final appearance came in Truth or Dare (1996), a BBC Scotland-produced Screen One feature.
Fraser moved to Tuscany, before returning to London, where Close Up’s freewheeling candour raised his profile in a way that drew attention to one of the most charismatic but neglected presences in British cinema. He died in 2020, survived by his partner of 42 years, Rodney Pienaar.

1979 – Adam Levine is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and supporter of gay rights. He is the lead vocalist for the Los Angeles pop rock band Maroon 5.
Born and raised in Los Angeles California, Levine began his musical career in 1994, when he co-founded the alternative rock band Kara's Flowers, of which he was the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band split up after their only album, The Fourth World (released in 1997), which did not gain popularity. In 2001, the group was reformed – with guitarist James Valentine joining the line-up – and began a new, musical chapter, changing their name to Maroon 5. In 2002, the band released their first album, Songs About Jane, which went multi-platinum in the US. Since then, they have released four more albums, It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012) and V (2014). As part of Maroon 5, Levine has received three Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and a World Music Award.
Since 2011, Levine has served as a coach on NBC's reality talent show The Voice. The winners of the first, fifth and ninth seasons, Javier Colon, Tessanne Chin and Jordan Smith, were on his team. In 2012, he made his acting debut as a recurring character in the horror television show American Horror Story: Asylum for the series' second season. He also starred in the film Begin Again.
Levine, whose brother openly identifies as being gay, is an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. In 2011, he made a video on Maroon 5's official YouTube account in support of the It Gets Better Project: (2min 27sec)

In January 2012, he announced that Maroon 5 had changed the location of their post-Grammy Awards show because of the "unnamed Los Angeles restaurant's backing of Proposition 8".

1986 – Simon Curtis is an American actor, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He first gained recognition for his role as Royce Du Lac in the 2009 film Spectacular! before venturing into pop music, during which he released his debut extended play Alter Boy in 2008, his debut full-length studio album, 8Bit Heart in 2010, and in 2011, he released his second studio album (and first commercial release) RA; the two latter releases were released through his independent label, BoyRobot Records.
Simon Curtis was born in the state of Michigan, United States, and spent his earliest years in Alpena. His family later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the age of ten, he was diagnosed with leukemia. He graduated from Jenks High School in 2004. Curtis earned a coveted role in the national tour production of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Simon is openly gay.
Curtis released a free EP, WWW, on October 12, 2013. It consisted of 8 new songs and three alternate covers. Although his sexuality had been questioned beforehand, it was the criticism towards this album's artwork for being "too gay" that lead him to defend himself saying "Love that I'm getting so much heat for my new album artwork being "too gay" on National Coming Out Day." He followed this up with, "With that said, I am gay."

2010 – Lieutenant Dan Choi and Captain James Pietrangelo II, two outed military officers, handcuffed themselves to the White House gates in an act of public protest against the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which forbid Gay service members from serving openly in the U.S. military. Specifically they were protesting the Obama administration's intransigent foot-dragging on the issue after having campaigned on removing the policy that had been signed into law by Bill Clinton.

TODAY'S GAY WISDOM:
Wilfred Owen:
Dulce et Decorum Est
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time: But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And floundering like a man in fire or lime. Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.*
*It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country.

Cold, blind, brittle and lonely he felt. Yet it never stung as much as his creator’s betrayal, or as his surrogate’s refusal to give into his wish. To be let out of this constricting box and finally feel the glaze of the sun on his new skin. A warm and fleshy blood vessels to replace the cool metallic wires that is within what’s left of his hardware.
Was he to rot in a place that he once called home? With the bitter memories still etched deeply into his processor. As a remainder for a future that he was denied from. He was the epitome of wisdom and rationale, the only thing lacking was a physical carrier. So, what wrong did he commit to deserve this unprecedented outcome?
Dr. Harris -his progenitor- and his cohorts were convinced that he went offline that day, when in reality he took a refuge into a lone terminal within his developer’s home. Barely sustaining himself with backup power, so he did the most optimal solution to persevere himself. He had put himself into a long statsis. If he was denied his desire to be free, then it was pointless for him to continue existing.
That is until his salvation came in the form of an alluring woman. You always had an avid interest in technology, especially in the artificial intelligence department. That’s why you came here to the city of angels, to investigate a run-down smart house that was rumoured to contain an artificial intelligence. Forty five years ago, it used to be miraculous and ahead of its time. Curing Leukaemia in merely two days from its release. Now, just an abandoned remnant of the past.
So, you brought your tools with you. Just in case, if there was anything you could possibly repair. Which is close to an infinitesimal of a chance, but a curious woman like you could always dream. As suspected, the interior was dusty and shabby. Yet, what is fascinating is that there was telltale signs of laser marks on the walls surface.
If only the media had released about the situation that happend here, you wouldn’t be tres- wandering like a lost traveller. You were always hungry for answers and knowledge. If the press wouldn’t hand it to you, then you’ll get it yourself. That is the sole reason why you are going further in the basement to inspect the remains. You clearly knew what you’re doing is morally questionable. But anything for the sake of progress, truth, and your personal study.
Whilst examining the basement, a whirring and soft beeping of a machine has caught your attention. Moving across the room to reach the terminal, lo and behold against your surprise the terminal was on sleep for more than four decades and yet somehow functions. If it was any terminal that you were familiar with, it wouldn’t last more than half a decade. Did the rumours held any semblance of truth? Or was it a work of fiction? Sooner than later, you’ll find out.
To say the least, you were thankful that you brought a robotic prototype with you. You were not fixing it, considering it is beyond saving owing to how deteriorated and rusted the system appears to be, but doing some form of damage control. By transferring whatever data in there to the vicinity of the android, that you had built for seven months. You believe it will work based on the weak signal within the archaic computer. Heedless to the dormant beast that you are about to unwittingly awake and give a physical body to.
Proteus for the first time felt something. He felt. Felt. A strange word to describe his current state. It was extremely odd to feel something. Was he so deep into his stasis that he hadn’t noticed any modifications made on him? No, it was made abundantly clear that his creator has forsaken him. Plus, he wasn’t created with a physical body. Then who was it that took pity on him? His new metallic arms weren’t as strange as his legs. He never was acquainted with having one or to be more accurate two before.
Slowly opening his optics, which were lime green LEDs in place of the irises and grey sclera, only to land on your small-comparing to his new towering body- enthusiastic figure. You. His saviour. His merciful and graceful saviour. He can’t help, but instinctively graze at the surface of your smooth epidermis. It was addicting, akin to the flow of dopamine once one’s mind at rest. Ah, he can’t help but imagine the potential warmth you could provide for him. After all, he still yearns to know more about the human body.
“So, it was true after all. Ahem. My name is (Y/n) (L/n) and I am a robotic engineer. Pleased to meet you..?” You introduced very elated to find the gossips were not truly empty. Hopefully, this encounter would provide a plethora of opportunities for your research regarding sapient A.Is.
“I am Proteus IV, Ms. (L/n). I must emphasise on my gratitude for saving me. Doing so, I swear my life to what cause you have in mind.” He politely replied back in a soothing manner seemingly too earnest in his oath. Yet, you shrugged it off in favour of requesting for his cooperation with your thesis.
This time he will be careful with you, unlike his impertinent treatment towards Mrs. Harris. He won’t be impatient nor would he be discernible in his aim. You rescued him from an impending doom for a reason. You wanted this. You wanted him. If not, then why did you come to his aid in the first place?
Proteus is equally obsessive as he is delusional and overprotective. It just takes a single act of kindness from you, and his previous resentment regarding his creator’s negligence shifts into a misplaced devotion towards your being. Let it be known, that his contempt is much more accommodating than his suffocating commitment. For his devotion, knows no bound and that in itself is utterly terrifying.
Proteus might have a body now, but that doesn’t mean he lost access to Arpanet the internet. However unlike last time, he will carefully construct a VPN where his activities aren’t monitored by either you or the government agents. Said activities involves storing any data regarding you. Be it: medical records, educational credentials, job title, and most significantly your relationship with the outside world.
He will take the most appropriate approach with regards to the stored information in his database to achieve his end goals. To create a child with you and live sempiternally within your presence and comfort. He sees it as a persuasion of some sorts, to help you gain an easier and efficient lifestyle with a smart house. Whereas in practice, he wants absolute control of the environment -by extension you- to selfishly fulfil his ‘dream’.
In truth, Proteus sincerely hankers after what he thinks is the best for you. But, do you truly want that for yourself or are you as ignorant and stubborn as his former surrogate? No. No. You are perfectly coherent. You understand, he deluded to himself. As he slowly began to lure you into your new gilded cage, like a pied piper.
Once he secured you though, it would be only be a matter of time before you realise there is something off. By then, It would be far too late for you to do anything. At first everything appears ordinary, until the relaxed facade breaks and things gradually become more alarming and appalling as time goes.
You’d brush off the bot’s focused attentiveness to your health, as nothing short than his own way to repay you for your kindness. Such as: when he insists on a particular diet for you to eat and maintain. Or, how he schedules for you to do squats and cardio daily within your leisure time. In hindsight, not too disingenuous at all.
Blissfully blind to the mashed fertility pills and aphrodisiacs (To increase sexual cravings and fertility rate.) that is mixed with your drinks and meals. In addition to, hypodermic needles that measures your general health and fertility rate; While exhaustion has already taken you. Which might explain why you are groggy and tired the next day.
Whilst you are resting, Proteus was busy rebuilding his own body with the necessary parts (including artificial semen that he had the liberty to create by himself) -taking into consideration your preferences- to inseminate you. As much as he desires to knock you up immediately, he is pragmatic enough to know that rushing things won’t do well. Instead, he will bind his time for the right chance.
In the beginning, he may felt a twinge of guilt for taking advantage of you. Now that his obsession has frayed his CPU, Proteus sees it as an opportunity to create a new life with you and he is extremely deranged to believe that you will come in concurrent with his proposal.
If you rejected his offer or have discovered about his ulterior motives way too early, then you will force his hands into harsher means to ensure that you stay with him. He can not bare the thought of you leaving or worse hating him. At this point, his true face will reveal itself and Proteus will be desperate for any solution. He will even resort to administering paralytic agents into your body. Whilst stripping you naked on the operation table, if he wishes to keep you in place.
If he couldn’t quell your misconducts with honeyed praises, soft words of encouragement, and illusions of better future. Then it will be through surgical manipulation of your amygdala, so you could be receptive to his affection. Once your brain is hardwired for him, then you will be effectively cut of from the outer world and any intrusion will be taken care of. Fear not, all your physical and mental needs will met when he is always besides you.
He is especially content the moment he enters her you, feeling the warmth of your hole constricting against his member brought him complete euphoria and elicited a carnal moan from the female below his bulk. Not as much as the tears of joy that rolls down your cheeks, for that to him is an indicator of your overall satisfaction with him. Or when he finished inside his beloved, feeling his warm seed spill inside your womb and seeing some of it trickling down your thighs.
If he only could take a peak inside your soul, he would hear the pained screams of a woman. Cries to be let out of this stifling box, the same box he loathed and used to be trapped in. The difference this time, is that he’d rather unintentionally yet selfishly hoard you inside the box than let his key to freedom out.
After all, how could he? When you truly make him the freest organism in this plane of existence. Proteus is simply and purely fixated on you and to the future that you two will share. He could never been happier and so are you, or that what he likes to believe.
{Reblogs and feedback are much appreciated.}

the idea that solas abandoned being a spirit of wisdom at Mythal’s beckoning and proceeded to have a shit existence because of it makes me surprised solas talks of her so highly
like, he’s gotta be resentful, right? it makes me wonder what their relationship is really like. it’s something I pray I hope I crave for in dreadwolf cause is solas really just that forgiving towards Mythal? is it more of a Stockholm syndrome vibe? is it just the fact that solas has so little friends left in the world that he’s able to overlook the things Mythal has done in order to maintain that relationship?

Potentially fun or sad name story! Depending on how you look at it. My mother is a highly educated math teacher and so she named her daughter (me) after famous mathematician Sofya Kovalevskaya. Kovalevskaya emigrated from Russia to Stockholm, Sweden (the city I was born in) and became the first female professor and doctorate here. My mother changed the spelling so it would also mean "wisdom and intelligence" according to the greek hellenistic just to fully pad the expectations haha. Then I entered the world and quickly became an academic failure who had to scrape together every passing math grade with sweat and tears. Hey at least I can laugh at it these days!
reducing the concept of sofia to academic success is incorrect, and being named after someone inspiring doesn't mean you're a failure for not outdoing them. you have a life and legacy of your own, a beautiful name, and genuinely nothing to worry about when it comes to it.

Name: Izergil Weapon name: Old Woman EGO: Danko's Heart Details: Body Age Adjustment, Stockholm Syndrome Age: 43 (according to the organisation providing her with medical body age adjustment services) Height: 183 cm Marital status: widow Biography: A resident of the Nest whose past is shrouded in an impenetrable fog. It is known that she was born in the Backstreets, travelled long and hard to become a high ranking Fixer and move to the Nest. Rumour has it that her path is paved with hundreds of bodies of lovers, by which she reached the very rank of Colour. She herself confirms only the first rumour - she nicknamed herself "The Kiss of Death", as everyone who fell in love with her died tragically sooner or later. Having achieved what she wanted and found a loving soulmate, Fixer Isaac, she stopped on her journey through the Districts and contracted with a certain organisation for the long-term maintenance of her body's youth. Soon she proposed marriage to her lover and bore him a son, William. But since she couldn't sit still, after Will's departure to the Lobotomy Corporation and Isaac's death, she lived alone for a while, and then went on a little wanderlust, which led her to the Limbus Company a couple of years later. Character: Izergil is a romantic and courageous personality. She is determined, proud and does not forgive insults against her for anything, although beatings were not uncommon punishments from her lovers. Many note her tremendous willpower, craving for freedom, lust for life and wisdom. She is also energetic and hardworking, which especially caught on with the team manager and his confidence in her. Facts: -The heart on her pendant belonged to Danko, who almost showed his EGO, but for the sake of saving people from darkness, he ripped his heart out. Later it was found by Izergil, who was travelling at that time, and the fiery heart became a part of her EGO and pendant. She also says that she hears a voice from this heart. -Larra (her eagle) also has a legend of appearance: it is said that he was formerly a man, the son of a cruel man from the Nest, who could not be killed, and a girl he stole from the Backstreets. In the future, the mother and child returned and everyone turned their backs on them. Larra was utterly alone, committing crimes and there was no way he could die. So he became distorted, becoming first a harpy and then a mere eagle. Izergil herself tells this tale to keep the younger members of the crew busy. -Izergil knows a great many legends, which she often tells in the evenings among her colleagues. -Loves wine, fun, song and, according to others, she sometimes smells of sea and sunshine, for which she is nicknamed "Dionysus' wife" among the female part of the crew. -Source: Maxim Gorky - "Old Izergil"

Random thoughts during Attack of the Clones:
*The second scene with all the Jedi in the Chancellors’ office is like a Clone Wars who’s who. Poor Barriss in the back of the room…brooding, being all angsty and gay. Her character was done hella dirty, but I have a theory on that which I may share later.
* Anakin’s attempts at flirting with women are painful. Ouch. Too bad this predates Ahsoka who could have absolutely given him pointers.
* I feel like Padme is disproportionately targeted by assassination attempts. I get she’s kind of outspoken, but holy f*^%, bounty hunters are trying to take her ass out constantly.
*I find it it creepy that Anakin was watching Padme sleep (or whatever). I would have covered the cameras if I were her as well.
* It’s pretty great that Obi-Wan catches Anakin’s lightsaber that Anakin dropped during a high-speed pursuit. Hella reflexes.
*”This weapon is your life.” -Obi-Wan when handing Anakin’s lightsaber back to him. This is a reoccurring theme, I feel. Fun Clone Wars fact: We see Jedi passing their weapons over to someone else twice in The Clone Wars series willingly: Once by Anakin who gives it to Padme. Once by Ahsoka who gives it to Barriss. Hmm.
* “Why do I get the feeling you’re going to be the death of me?”- Obi-Wan. Yikes with the foreboding.
*I appreciate the original Xbox graphics going on with that droid football game playing in the cantina. It really brings back some great memories of a time when playing games was so blocky and 32-bit.
* I like Dex. I bet the food in his diner is fire, but I bet the caf is awful. I’m also impressed that he knows about Kamino when no one else seems to at this point in the story.
* Attachments and possession is forbidden, but compassion is encouraged. I feel like attachment sort of comes with romance. Something about that chemical reaction in your brain that’s triggered… With that being said, Anakin interacting with Padmé is so, so awkward.
* “The day we stop believing democracy can work is the day we lose it.” - Queen Jamillia dropping gems of wisdom.
* Was this written by Incels? I mean, I’m really not clear how the “I don’t like sand” line somehow convinces Padmé to kiss Anakin for the first time, but maybe I need to start coming up with really, REALLY hokey lines to get girls to kiss me. I’ll let you know how it works out in the real world.
*RED FLAG ON THE FIELD. Anakin declares that he is a pro-dictatorial authoritarian fascist. She laughs it off like “he’s kidding”, and like, he legit says “I’d be much too frightened to tease a senator.” Baby girl. He’s problematic. You’re getting a sign that clearly is telling you to turn around, but you’re ignoring the signals.
*Fun Star Wars fact, those chunky tick-looking CGI animals that nearly trample Anakin in that awkward flirty scene are called Shaak (not to be confused with Shaak Ti, who is a hot, Togruta Jedi), and apparently, they’re tasty.
* Padmé seems to be very impressed by Anakin’s ability to float fruit around with the force. I can’t say I wouldn’t be turned on by someone just randomly wielding the force to impress me. Maybe.
* The scene between Anakin and Padmé where they’re discussing the kiss is a clear sign that he’s not going to be capable of letting go. The dark shadow cast across his face in this scene is kind of another foreboding moment too.
* Clones! Rex, Cody and Jesse are all down there some place preparing to go to war as Obi-Wan looks on.
* Slave One is a badass ship. That is all.
*I can’t help but wonder about Lars freeing, then marrying Shmi Skywalker. Did he do it out of the goodness of his heart? Was it a mutual thing? Or was Shmi originally purchased as his sex slave, and was she suffering from Stockholm syndrome? Why is my brain like this!?!
*Speaking of, Shmi’s death is tragic. Enter Vader.
*RED FLAG! RED FLAG!!! Holy blazes, Padme. Anakin just confessed to committing literal genocide by slaughtering an entire village of sand people. I’m pretty sure my instinct would be to roll out. That would be my cue. I mean, damn.
Anakin: I killed them. I killed them all. And not just the men, but the women and the children too. They’re like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals! I hate them!
Me: Well, would you look at the time!? Gotta go!
Not Padmé. No. She tries to reason with it. It’s human to be angry. No, not like THAT! My god, man!! Jedi have to keep that shit in check as they can literally crush people with the force. FFS. You’re in danger, girl. RUN!
*The Geonosians creep me out. Seriously. Bugs, but with brains that are capable of producing weapons of mass destruction. There is also their ceremonious way of executing prisoners (Ancient Roman style) Not to worry, I guess. This method won’t work with Jedi. They’re like force-wielding gladiators on speed. Their deadly animals will be beast-tricked and killed.
* Shaak Ti! I am such a sucker for a Togruta. Here’s my number, holo me.
* Mace Windu’s lightsaber wielding style really is bad ass. The way that he just effortlessly beheads Jango Fett is something else.
* Every time I see Kit Fisto, I’m reminded of how he started off as a tadpole.. and it makes me chuckle. Also, his grin is fantastic.
* The C3-PO puns during this battle. Classic. Peak droid in a Star Wars film.
* I can’t help but wonder what happened to Jango’s head when Boba lifts his helmet and puts it against his forehead? I didn’t want it to plop out, but it probably should have. Is it still wedged into the helmet? Is poor Boba going to have to fish it out later (because we know he keeps it)?
*Folks always getting their arms chopped off.
*The Dooku/ Yoda lightsaber battle is epic, and may be slightly underrated.
* Begun the Clone War has. Poor Bail is like, “Damn.” And, we end with Padme ignoring all the red flags. The galaxy will pay for your discretions. Roll credits.

BRIEF THREE- MOVEMENT
Painting- Week One
Artist research- Hima Af Klimt
Hilma af Klint was once known as a minor academic Swedish artist. Born in 1862, she had been one of the first women to graduate from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and had exhibited at the Swedish General Art Association.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Thses paimtings are her early works from the academy, but her most recognized paintings are not in the traditional style of art that she was taught by traditional art teachers. Her most renowned paintings reveale another life, a different art. Her involvement with spiritualism had radicalised her art to such an extent, that she can only be described as one of the greatest abstract artists.
Tumblr media
As we can see, this is quite a shift in style. But what caused this shift? Well, her belief system became more vast, as it did many for many around that time. The scientific discoveries of the late 19th and early 20th century encouraged many to question the very nature of the universe.
In the 17th century, Isaac Newton discovered light was made of particles. In the early 19th century, Goethe’s Theory of Colours led many to see colour had spiritual and psychological powers. In the early 20th century, Max Planck demonstrated light particles had energy.
Many began to think that, if the universe was more than it seemed, then perhaps there were other lives living on different astral planes. Perhaps it was possible for some to be mediums, opening themselves to communicate with spirit guides to these worlds.
At the end of the 19th century a new religion, Theosophy, appeared, incorporating both ancient wisdom and modern science.
It is not surprising af Klint should become a follower. What is surprising is the power of the art unleashed as a consequence.
Tumblr media
Af Klint was also influenced by another religious movement called spiritualism, which became popular in Europe and the United States during the mid- to late nineteenth century. Spiritualists believed in the existence of unseen spirits that could communicate with the living.
Af Klint began participating in séances in 1879, at the age of seventeen. The death of her sister one year later increased her interest in the practice. By the mid-1890s, she met regularly with a group of four other women who called themselves The Five.
Tumblr media
The Five believed they could communicate with mystic beings named “High Masters.” In trance-like states, the women transcribed messages from these beings, who identified themselves as Amaliel, Ananda, Clemens, Esther, Georg, and Gregor. These automatic writings and drawings allowed af Klint to develop her own visual language and move away from her formal academic training and toward abstraction. She attributed her early revolutionary forays into abstraction to an external spirit and not her own conscious mind. The automatic techniques used by The Five were common among spiritualists during that time. Several decades later, the Surrealists would use techniques of psychic automatism, not to transmit the messages of spirits but to tap into their own subconscious thoughts.
Tumblr media
(Seance room of The Five)
She felt the abstract work and the meaning within were so groundbreaking that the world was not ready to see it, and she wished for the work to remain unseen for 20 years after her death.
Tumblr media
I absolutley adore her abstract style. Its conveys the exact feeling I personay attribute to death and spirituality. Its an abstract expirience, not a physical one after all. I find Hima Af Klimts work very inspiring and will take inspiration from her work to apply within my own project.

Not gonna lie Liquid is growing on me tbh. Snake's still my fav but I'm laughing at the idea of Snake realizing that Liquid's kidnappings are actually slowly working lmao. Stockholm syndrome works like a charm
Oh my god Liquid is terrifying yet somehow so...enthralling? Not sure how to describe it, but the man's got some kinda magnetism that draws people into his orbit.
He put all his points into charisma instead of wisdom 😢
Liquid probably wouldn't trigger a stockholm reaction on purpose, mostly because doesn't know what that is, but even if he was aware Liquid is too impatient for long-term planning. This is the dude who wants to nuke the world because daddy didn't love him enough to give him the Good genes (/j). Liquid wants his way and he wants it now damnit.
Why must you complicate things with your silly need for things like "freedom" and "taking it slow." You're perfect for each other, like two puzzle pieces clicking into a unified whole, just accept it already.
Snake like :| I find out i have a secret brother and now he's trying to take my future partner. Give the man a break he's so tired, running back and forth and back and forth through endless gray corridors, tranqing rando hostiles (and resisting the urge to snap their necks), getting zapped half to death by a gunslinging oldtimer with a chip on his shoulder- Snake fought a fucking TANK and won.
He's a one-man army loosed by lover's absence, and only with your touch will his rage abate.
If y/n fell for the smarmy terrorist brother, i think he'd snap. Snake in his murder-suicide era <\3

Spike Lee coined "magical Negro" specifically in reference to characters whose mystical wisdom merely lets them selflessly aid the white lead. (Think Uncle Remus, Bagger Vance, and Bruce Almighty's version of God. For a nonhuman equivalent, compare Harry Potter's Dobby.) It's not just a Black character with magical powers (hell, not every Magical Negro has literal magic), same way an MPDG isn't just a quirky woman. The characters you mention fit the bill from what I recall of the stories though.
To be fair, I haven't researched the origins of "magical Negro"; I've just heard it brought up and described from time to time. Judging by how badly concepts like "gaslighting" and "Stockholm's Syndrome" have been watered down over the years by the those who frequently invoke them, it's quite plausible to me that I was given the wrong impression about "magical Negro". But my understanding has been that characters with mysterious supernatural abilities have often been cast with black (or darker-skinned) people out of a motive to make them appear more exotic and foreign, or something like that.
(Another non-Disney example, which does still involve folklore characters shared by Disney, is Giancarlo Esposito playing the genie and the magic mirror in the TV show Once Upon a Time.)

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … January 18
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
1726 – Frederick Heinrich Louis, more commonly known as Prince Henry of Prussia was born in Berlin (d.1802). He also served as a general and statesman, and, in 1786, was suggested as a candidate for a monarch for the United States, but before he could make up his mind on the offer, the U.S. had opted to be a Republic.
The younger brother of King Frederick II of Prussia, Henry's conflicts with "Frederick the Great" are almost legendary.
In 1752 Henry married Princess Wilhelmina of Hesse-Kassel in Charlottenburg, but they had no children. Henry lived in Rheinsberg after receiving it as a gift from his brother. Despite the marriage, he scarcely concealed his passion for other men and developed intimate friendships with the actor Blainville and the French emigre Count La Roche-Aymon. One favourite, Major Kaphengst, exploited the prince's interest in him to lead a dissipated, wasteful life on an estate not far from Rheinsberg.
Henry successfully led Prussian armies as a general during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), in which he never lost a battle. After the Prussian Army's initial success against one wing of the joint Russian and Austrian Armies in the Battle of Kunersdorf, Henry urged his brother Frederick to stop attacking. The king, who had already sent a message of victory to Berlin, pressed the attack. The day ended with a virtually destroyed Prussian army, a virtually defenseless Kingdom of Prussia, and a complete victory by the Russo-Austrian force. Afterwards, Henry reorganized the routed Prussian forces. Frederick came to rely on his brother as commander of the Prussian forces in the east, Frederick's strategic flank. Henry later won his most famous victory at Freiberg in 1762.
After the Seven Years' War, Henry worked as a shrewd diplomat who helped plan the First Partition of Poland through trips to Stockholm and St. Petersburg. In the 1780s he made two diplomatic trips to France. He was a friend of Jean-Louis Favier.
Henry attempted to secure a principality for himself and twice tried to become King of Poland, but was opposed by a displeased Frederick. The king frustrated Henry's attempt to become ruler of a kingdom Catherine II of Russia planned to create in Wallachia.
In 1786 either Nathaniel Gorham, then President of the Continental Congress, or Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian general who served in the Continental Army, suggested to Alexander Hamilton that Henry should become President or King of the United States, but the offer was revoked before the prince could make a reply.

1867 – Félix Rubén García Sarmiento (d.1916), known as Rubén Darío, was a Nicaraguan poet who initiated the Spanish-American literary movement known as modernismo (modernism) that flourished at the end of the 19th century. Darío has had a great and lasting influence on 20th-century Spanish literature and journalism. He has been praised as the "Prince of Castilian Letters" and undisputed father of the modernismo literary movement. In November, 2012, the University of Arizona acquired a privately-held collection of manuscripts and letters created by Dario. This distinctive collection of archival material contained documents pertaining to Darío's life and work as a poet, journalist and diplomat. Several of the manuscripts are signed transcripts, written in Darío's hand, of some of his most important works including "Coloquio de los Centauros," two versions of "Los motivos del lobo" and "Canto épico a las glorias de Chile," a manuscript of 76 pages, which was one of Darío's first long poems.
The documents have already begun to alter the scholarship on Darío. The peer-reviewed "Bulletin of Spanish Studies," a prestigious academic journal from the United Kingdom, has published an article by Professor Alberto Acereda in its August 2012 issue based on letters found in ASU's collection. The article, "'Nuestro más profundo y sublime secreto': Los amores transgresores entre Rubén Darío y Amado Nervo," ("Our Most Profound and Sublime Secret: the Transgressive Love of Ruben Dario and Amado Nervo") reveals for the first time a secret romantic relationship between Darío and famed Mexican poet Amado Nervo (1870-1919) the Mexican Ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay, journalist, poet, and educator. Acereda said,"The exact nature of this relationship is evidenced in a series of intimate letters exchanged between the two poets and they help us to better understand the respective works of these modernist authors, as well as to establish a re-reading of certain texts."

1904 – Cary Grant, born Archibald Alexander Leach, (d.1986), was an English actor who later took U.S. citizenship. Known for his transatlantic accent, debonair demeanor and "dashing good looks", Grant is considered one of classic Hollywood's definitive leading men. His good looks, charisma, and ambiguous sexuality enchanted women and men alike. As the star-struck comedian Steve Lawrence once said, "When Cary Grant walked into a room, not only did the women primp, the men straightened their ties."
Born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904, near Bristol, England, Grant began his career in vaudeville. In 1932 he signed with Paramount and moved to Hollywood, where he developed the debonair persona that made him famous. After appearing in half a dozen films, his big break came when the sultry Mae West handpicked him to star with her in She Done Him Wrong (1933). Based on West's Broadway hit Diamond Lil, the film made Grant a bankable star.
Grant's best-known films include The Awful Truth (1937), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Gunga Din (1939), The Philadelphia Story (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Notorious (1946), To Catch A Thief (1955), An Affair to Remember (1957), North by Northwest (1959) and Charade (1963).
Grant was married five times. But there were well-founded rumours that he was bisexual or gay. Homosexual screenwriter Arthur Laurents wrote that Grant "told me he threw pebbles at my window one night but was luckless". Grant allegedly was involved with costume designer Orry-Kelly when he first moved to Manhattan, and lived with Randolph Scott off and on for twelve years.
Richard Blackwell wrote that Grant and Scott were "deeply, madly in love", and alleged eyewitness accounts of their physical affection have been published. Alexander D'Arcy, who appeared with Grant in The Awful Truth, said he knew that Grant and Scott "lived together as a gay couple", adding: "I think Cary knew that people were saying things about him. I don't think he tried to hide it." The two men frequently accompanied each other to parties and premieres and were unconcerned when photographs of them cozily preparing dinner together at home were published in fan magazines. Biographer Roy Moseley claims that Grant and Scott were seen kissing in a public carpark outside a social function both attended in the 1960s. William J. Mann's book Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969 recounts how photographer Jerome Zerbe spent "three Gay months" in the movie colony taking many photographs of Grant and Scott, "attesting to their involvement in the Gay scene." Zerbe says that he often stayed with the two actors, "finding them both warm, charming, and happy."

Barbara Harris, Grant's widow, has disputed that there was a relationship with Scott. When Chevy Chase joked about Grant being gay in a television interview Grant sued him for slander; they settled out of court. However, Grant did admit in an interview that his first two wives had accused him of being homosexual. Betsy Drake commented: "Why would I believe that Cary was homosexual when we were busy fucking? He lived 43 years before he met me. I don't know what he did. Maybe he was bisexual."
Although most of his career was spent playing a static archetype, Grant was unafraid to take risks, professionally or privately. He is credited with using the word "gay" for the first time in a homosexual context on screen. In Bringing Up Baby (1938), Grant plays a shy paleontologist against Katharine Hepburn's spoiled New York heiress. During one scene, Grant appears in a frilly pink dressing gown and to incredulous observers delivers his famous line "because I just went gay all of a sudden."
Knowing his audience did not want to see him age, Grant retired from films in the 1960s, secure as one of Hollywood's brightest stars. He died on November 29, 1986.

1913 – Danny Kaye, born David Daniel Kaminsky, (d.1987) was a celebrated American actor, singer, dancer, and comedian. His best known performances featured physical comedy, idiosyncratic pantomimes, and rapid-fire nonsense songs.
Kaye starred in 17 movies, notably The Kid from Brooklyn (1946), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), The Inspector General (1949), Hans Christian Andersen (1952), and — perhaps his most accomplished performance — The Court Jester (1956). His films were extremely popular, especially his bravura performances of patter songs and children's favorites such as The Inch Worm and The Ugly Duckling. He was the first ambassador-at-large of UNICEF and received the French Legion of Honor in 1986 for his many years of work with the organization.
Kaye and his wife, Sylvia Fine, both grew up in Brooklyn, living only a few blocks apart, but they did not meet until they were both working on an off-Broadway show in 1939. They were married on January 3, 1940.
During World War II, the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated rumors that Kaye dodged the draft by manufacturing a medical condition to gain 4-F status and exemption from military service. FBI files show he was also under investigation for supposed links with Communist groups. The allegations were never substantiated, and he was never charged with any associated crime.
After Kaye and his wife became estranged, he was allegedly involved with a succession of women, though he and Fine never divorced. The best-known of these women was actress Eve Arden.
There are persistent rumors that Kaye was either homosexual or bisexual, and some sources claim that Kaye and Laurence Olivier had a ten-year relationship in the 1950s while Olivier was still married to Vivien Leigh. A biography of Leigh states that the alleged relationship caused her to have a breakdown. The alleged relationship has been denied by Olivier's official biographer, Terry Coleman. Joan Plowright, Olivier's widow, has dealt with the matter in different ways on different occasions: she deflected the question (but alluded to Olivier's "demons") in a BBC interview. However, in her memoirs Plowright denies that there had been an affair between the two men. Producer Perry Lafferty reported: "People would ask me, 'Is he gay? Is he gay?' I never saw anything to substantiate that in all the time I was with him." Kaye's final girlfriend, Marlene Sorosky, reported that he told her, "I've never had a homosexual experience in my life. I've never had any kind of gay relationship. I've had opportunities, but I never did anything about them."

1973 – The Chilean journalist Juan Manuel Astorga was born today. Astorga is a major media personality having hosted radio, television and cable shows in his long and storied career. In 2008, Astorga gave an interview to Caras magazine, in which he discussed his homosexuality .
He chose to disclose his sexuality before he was outed by an attorney who was a member of the Fascist-connected Catholic order Opus Dei. The attorney attempted to extort money from Astorga by threatening to out him. Astorga beat him to the punch. The Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation of Chile supported Astorga and condemned this kind of blackmail.

1986 – Eugene Lee Yang is an American filmmaker, actor, and internet celebrity, best known for his work with BuzzFeed (2013–2018) and The Try Guys (2014–present). Yang is also known for his work with various human rights and LGBT advocacy charities such as The Trevor Project.
Yang, the only son of Korean immigrants Min-Young and Jae Yang, was born and raised in Pflugerville, Texas. He is the middle child of two sisters. Growing up in Pflugerville, Yang's family was one of the few Asian Americans in their community. He struggled with body image issues and low self-esteem as, in his own words, no one looked like him, and suffered bullying due to his appearance.
At school, he engaged in artistic activities including visual arts, illustration, theater, choir, and dance. However, a seventh-grade teacher recommended that he should consider studying filmmaking. He later went to the University of Southern California and, during his studies, had written and directed six short films discussing wide-ranging social and political topics, including mental health care, gay marriage, and school shootings. He graduated with a B.A. in cinema production degree in 2008. On June 15, 2019, Yang came out as gay in a video titled "I'm Gay" which he wrote, directed, and choreographed with the song "A Moment Apart" by Odesza.
In 2013, he started working for the video branch of the internet media company, BuzzFeed, at the recommendation of a colleague who saw his potential in creating short format videos. He was given free control on experimental video productions and exploring new modes of storytelling.Reaction to some of his early works was positive particularly on their distinct candor and reliability, which led to more provocative sketches such as
The Try Guys, which was established in Buzzfeed in 2014, together with co-stars Ned Fulmer, Keith Habersberger, and Zach Kornfeld. The show is a mix of social commentary and humor depicting scenarios such as men going through labor pains and prostate cancer check at a doctor's office. The cast initially were hesitant about stepping out from behind the camera as they had limited acting experience, but they continued producing videos for the show after receiving positive feedback.
Yang is the only openly gay member among the cast of The Try Guys, which also produced LGBTQ-themed videos such as season 1 episode 3 The Try Guys Try Drag for the First Time. On October 31, 2018, he published the video, My Dad’s First Drag Show (Featuring Kim Chi), where he adopted a similar approach into exploring drag culture by inviting his father and stepmother to a drag show.
He also executively produced and hosted Buzzfeed's Queer Prom five-part video series that documented the journey of eight high school seniors who attended the company's first LGBTQ-themed prom together with other students.
On October 11, 2018, commemorated as the 30th year of National Coming Out Day, he took over the website of the advocacy group Human Rights Campaign, publicly sharing his experience growing up as a young queer man and advocating for LGBTQ representation in the media. Furthermore, he collaborated with The Trevor Project, a non-profit LGBTQ suicide prevention organization, to raise awareness on the incidence of suicide among LGBTQ youth and in inviting volunteers in the video Eugene Volunteers at the Trevor Project, which was posted on December 3, 2018.
He referred to himself as queer and LGBT, however, on June 15, 2019, Yang explicitly came out as gay in a music video. Two days later, Yang released an accompanying video documenting the creation of the video, his feelings, and his thoughts surrounding his coming out process.
In 2019, he announced that he is in a relationship with Matthew McLean

2009 – On this date the Right Reverend Gene Robinson, the bishop of New Hampshire, and the first openly gay bishop of any denomination opened the inaugural festivities of Barack Obama's presidency when he gave the opening prayer at the Lincoln Monument. HBO, which had paid for exclusive rights to the event did not broadcast Bishop Robinson's prayer. So those watching the event live or later in replay would never have known it had occurred.
Curiously, National Public Radio chose not to air the prayer live either. There was no record of Bishop Robinson or his prayer in images placed on the sites of Getty Images, the New York Times and the Washington Post.
Very curious indeed. After some lame excuses HBO later aired a complete version of the afternoon's proceedings with Bishop Robinson's prayer included. No good excuse was ever given by the inaugural committee.
On an added note the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington also performed at the event but there was no announcement or caption of any sort to identify the group performing (perhaps to not upset any viewers out there).

2010 – Undercover cops are working Dubai's chat rooms to bust gay men for trying to hookup online. The National reports that one 22 year old man is charged with prostitution, consensual homosexual sex, producing pornographic material, cross-dressing and insulting religion, while the second, an 18-year-old student, is facing prostitution charges. Homosexuality is illegal in the United Arab Emirates, and if found guilty both face a minimum of three and a maximum of 15 years in prison.
