We all talk about how Wylan was abused by his father, but what I don’t see a lot of people talking about is how J*n didn’t even allow his son to grieve his mother’s loss. At that age, Wylan probably would have only started to grasp the concept of death, and he also needed time to process and grieve Marya’s finality - and J*n wouldn’t let him do either. And to make matters worse, Wylan needed his father there for him during that time and instead J*n just gave up on him. He wouldn't even let Wylan talk about his mother and instead expected him to simply suppress his grief because "it didn’t pay to dwell on the past". This would have done just as much emotional and mental damage to Wylan as his father’s abuse and I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about it.

Leigh has this thing of pairing people with similar struggles
Inej-Kaz: PTSD that caused them issues with touching other people
Nina-Matthias: Being raised in a militarized emviroment
Jesper-Wylan: Learning disabilities combined with daddy issues
Zoya-Nikolai: Being too pretty (and there is the hidden vulnerability too but whatever)
Alina-Mal: Self steem and belonging issues
Marie-Sergei: the struggle of being the worst characters on the grishaverse and having the fandom deny it just because they are both death

*appears next to you unprompted* OH and one more thing. they really did not have to strip wylan of his cleverness & cunning. actually, my son would have had jesper gladly reciting all the information on that passport before the man could have even entertain the slightest inkling of wylan’s dyslexia.

As a result of the recent cancellation, show-only viewers are going to have a very one dimensional view of Wylan Van Eck. They won’t get to see how smart he is, how strong he is, how incredibly and ridiculously brave he is. They’re going to see him as nothing more than a love interest for Jesper and just a silly kid who can’t read. He’s so so much more than that and I need Netflix to atone for their sins.

It's amazing that Van Ick has absolutely no reason for hating Wylan and decides that not only is his own SON not good enough, but also his inability to read is a motive to have him assassinated
Does he really think the people around him are gonna forget his constant "Oh don't mind Wylan he's illiterate scum equal only to perhaps, a rat"
Obviously he would have gotten away with killing off his own child because he's rich and Ketterdam is more focused on its own development and creating more lucrative means of enticing tourists in order to gain the most possible profit, than they are on the clearly suspicious death of an elite
But for an entire economy/government based on profit and business ventures that are more often then not, a risk (albeit calculated), where people at least need a hint of open mindedness in order to see beyond the possibility of failure, Van Ick is a hoe the least qualified to run a company not to mention hold a seat on the Merchant Council
The man cannot even see the potential directly under his nose, which is absurd when his son shines so magnificently
Not only is Wylan Van Eck Hendricks incredibly smart, he also continues to hold ambition above and beyond anything his father could begin to imagine
We know Wy is good with numbers, which let's face it, is amazing because unless you're some sort of astrophysicist, math is fucking awful, and being good at it is a blessing
Despite have barely any formal education, save his mother's teaching of the flute, our boy continues to show an expertise in chemistry that holds great potential to be more than just bombs and flash flashbangs, as seen in his development of the Wyvil which held great results even though it had only been recently developed
I don't even have to mention his art skills, especially with schematics which helped allow for the Ice Court Heist in the first place
You don't need to be word smart or even book smart to hold value, yet Van Ick decided that Wylan holds no use for the simple fact he can't read
What a doucheweasel. Blind people can't SEE but does their value decrease? No. Everyone is capable of greatness within their own set of skills but Van Ick is incapable of changing his mind to see his son as anything but a failure since he decreed him as such
This disallowance of change is what inevitably leads to his downfall. Change is essential to advancement (in moderation of course) and denying the potential for that change leads only to destruction
Given time anyone can grow beyond their limitations and succeed beyond expectation
Parents often forget that skills and abilities need time to grow based on each individual, they expect success in all areas immediately (beyond reason ofc) forgetting that perfection is unattainable and learning is always a curve as opposed to the shortest rout of a straight line, forgetting everyone is wired differently and excelling in some areas and struggling with others is normal
Wylan struggling internally with his self worth is a direct result of his father's actions. Support and stability would have allowed him to advance as a child but constantly berating him over one failure over and over until he gave up on himself (although crucial to his specific character development) was unnecessary and harsh
Wy would have bloomed naturally in his own time and would have been the son that any father would have been proud of
Getting away from the toxic relationship the two held gave Wylan that time and allowed him to be exactly what he wanted and needed to be for the Crows to succeed in their plans
Finding his place among them was the best thing that could have happened for him. Wylan has so much light and love to give and him getting that chance was so meaningful not to mention adorable and I'm so glad he found his home because he deserves so much for all he's been through, as much as any of them

Hii :)
I finished the soc duology recently and I love it, but I was really sad about matthias death, so I looked up for explanations to see if his death was really necessary, if it had a purpose or if it's just one of those things authors do to shook the reader or write "realistic stories" and you are one of the only people I saw who said it wasn't necessary, so can you tell me why, do you have more thoughts about that?
hi there!! i'm glad you enjoyed the books ☺
i usually don't like to speak much on this cuz i feel like people will think i'm biased since he's one of my top 3 crows but i'll explain it just this once..
Firstly, i truly find character deaths in general a very stupid trope.
And in my opinion, Matthias's death served no purpose other than adding shock value.
Throughout the duology, Matthias is talked about and shown to us as this highly trained and disciplined soldier, a Druskelle to be exact. And a lil rugged due to his experience in Hellgate. Throughout the plot we see him being very rational, being extremely distasteful of Kaz's methods yet still silently coping with him. Even during his confrontation with Brum, he maintained his cool and easily tricked Brum to save Nina, and further help break out Kuwei..
So when the whole encounter with that lil fjerdan boy happened, i just couldn't understand (and i still don't accept) how a well-trained Druskelle, an ex-convict and an overall calm and collected man couldn't handle the situation with a child.
In my opinion, the moment that child pulled out the gun, canon Matthias would've swiftly disarmed him and then proceeded to talk the child into calming down and make him understand.
Thus, despite people saying shit like “Matthias's past killed him” or “this is realistic, not everyone makes it”, bla bla bla.., i truly find it hard to believe. His death looks like a stunt for shock value. And it also seems as if the author Leigh Bardugo herself didn't know or had no plans for Matthias, so she simply chose to kill him off. Maybe because she already had things planned in her mind for Nina after the conclusion of CK but didn't know how to incorporate Matthias (and by extension Helnik) into it..
I'm not sure but to me, Matthias's death just doesn't feel like the right conclusion for his arc.
There's so many better ways his arc could've gone and here's my two fav personally thought out headcanons for him:
— Matthias working together with Nina to help Hanne/Rasmus become the new ruler of Fjerda
— Matthias joining Inej on her ship and helping her take down slavers and awful rich men
Ohh! he also gets to adopt a new wolf 🥺
Once again, these are my personal opinions and no one has to agree with these..:)
But I just think Matthias Helvar deserved better.

The Crows as John Mulaney Quotes
Wylan: You could pour soup into my lap and I'd probably apologize to you!
Matthias: I'll keep all of my emotions right here, and then one day I'll die.
Jesper making a distraction: Cus there's a horse! Loose in the hospital!
Inej: I am very small, and have no money. So you you can imagine the kind of stress that I am under.
Kaz: And without looking up at me, my dad just said, 'You have the moral backbone of a choclate eclair'.
Nina: And I said no. You know, like a liar.
Also Kaz: Shut up, you're all gonna die! Street smarts!
