Today I learned about that MoTHer F-eR T gene and how trichy it gets.
I sat through an online class from Trichy Nutrition on how the MTHFR gene affects trichotillomania.
The T mutation of MTHFR causes under-methylation; that is, a decline in the ability to convert methylene from an inactive form into a useful, active form. People with one copy of this gene have increased occurrences of body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) and are more prone to depression, OCD, ADHD, autoimmune disorders, hormone imbalances, and a whole host of other problems. People with two copies of the T gene can't convert B vitamins into useful forms at all, and have to have their B vitamins pre-converted.
But the most useful thing I learned today was that the reason I specifically (with only a single copy of the T gene variant) cannot take B vitamins without causing my neck to get completely out of joint (to the point where I can't even turn my head) is because the B vitamins they sell in most stores are synthetic, not natural. The buildup of waste from my body's failed attempts to make use of these factory chemicals has caused permanent damage to the joints in my vertebrae. Oh, and it can also contribute to my urges to pull my eyelashes and eyebrows. If fake vitamins are doing this to me, imagine what they might be doing to you. This is why food sourced vitamins are superior to supplements. But if you must have supplements, research the most bioavailable, natural forms you can get and only take those.

These glucocorticoids bind to receptors in specific areas of the brain critical for certain types of memory, such as the hippocampus. If the release of glucocorticoids is prolonged due to chronic stress, the hippocampus can sustain structural damage leading to reduced cognitive functioning.
Supplementation and cognition
Considerable attention has been paid to the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in brain functions since their discovery. A simple intervention with a dietary supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals may contribute to cognitive maintenance into old age.
