I feel like BFRB’s are REALLY common despite being so stigmatized, and I wanted to see how many of you are out there :)

the stigma and ableism towards mental health struggles like self harm, eating/feeding, substance use, and body-focused repetitive behavior disorders is incredibly frustrating and cruel. people aren't immoral for having behavior based health problems. it's not their fault they're struggling, and even if they're doing bad things, they still need help and support.

Shoutout to people with trichotillomania. People with bald spots. People with patchy or no eyebrows. People with thin or no lashes. People with sores on their faces, their scalps, their legs, their arms, or everywhere. People who pull consciously, subconsciously, or both. People who can't swim or wear certain clothes because of trichotillomania. People whose trichotillomania causes them pain. People's whose trichotillomania doesn't. People who pull 24/7, people who don't or barely pull anymore. People who want to get better and people who don't. People who visibly have it and people who don't. People who are open about their trichotillomania, and people who aren't. You're doing amazing however you handle it. You are beautiful regardless of your hair and how you feel about it. You are beautiful regardless your urges. You are beautiful and worthy of love. I'm proud of you.

ellie with a partner with bfrbs.
Tumblr media
a/n - sorry if these are out of character i'm mostly just projecting 🤗🤗
i just want to say to all my bfrb babes that ellie loves and helping in any way she can.
- if she notices that you're about to pick, she'll take her hands in yours and try to distract you from the urge.
- if you're the type of person that needs to get things off your chest, she'll listen to you so very attentively until the feeling doesn't feel as intense anymore.
- and if you're not:
she'll either talk your ear off about the latest comics she's reading or anything that comes to mind. i know she's less talkative in the second game but i fully believe that she'd be as conversational as she could in situations like this.
- if you have trichotillomania (projecting! :3) she'll make sure you don't feel AS insecure about your bald spots or your scabs. girlie is a GOD at making eye contact but i feel like she would do it more often as a subtle way of letting you know that she's not disgusted by your lack of lashes/eyebrows. don't know if this is too ooc but i want this woman to caress my baldspots.
- onto skin picking! she'll definitely help you out with tasks that involve your hands if it's mainly revolving around your fingers. she'll clean your scabs for you whether you can do it yourself or not.
- i feel like she wouldn't quite understand the fact that bfrb's are a REPETITIVE DISORDER and they're quite hard to stop so i feel like she would get mad at herself if you relapsed and blame herself for a while but she'd never get mad at you.
i had more in the first draft but tumblr is A DICK! (@staff i'm under your bed.) but to my babes with bfrbs i love you and ELLIE loves you and YOU'RE NOT DISGUSTING OR HIDEOUS OR LESS OF A PERSON - ani<3

happy disability pride month to people with BFRB’s (body focused repetitive behaviors) like dermatillomania, trichotillomania, nail biters, etc
BFRB’s are so hard to spread awareness and positivity for because, at least for me, mentioning skin-picking, hair-pulling etc can often just be triggering 😩 but know there’s no shame, and they’re SO much more common than you think. I have so many ADHD friends come up to me later and say “YOU have trich too??” and like. It’s so nice knowing we’re not alone in this, it just doesn’t get talked about often.

Idk where else to put this but I just need to let y'all know. If you have any BFRBs, I really can't recommend NAC enough. I have trichotillomania, dermatillomania, and dermatophagia and they have gotten SO bad recently. Especially the trich. My psychiatrist said he saw a study that said taking N-acetyl cysteine or NAC tablets help, but none of his clients have tried it so he told me to let him know if it works.
I've only been on them for 3 weeks and I have seen such major difference, I'm pulling and biting and picking way way way less frequently now. Sometimes I feel like I go a whole day without it. I feel like I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. It's a supplement so you don't need a prescription, I got a bottle for $8 at The Vitamin Shoppe. I take 1200 mg daily but I see some people say they need to take 1800-2400 for it to help.
After feeling out of control for so long I feel like I'm finally gaining some semblance of control back and I feel a lot happier and more confident. Now I just have to wait for everything to grow back lol. But please look into it if you haven't found anything else that works!

shoutout to ppl with trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder). love yall. remember you’re valid whether or not you have significant/noticeable hair loss and whether or not your hair loss is easy to hide. you’re valid whether you choose to hide your hair loss or not. you’re valid no matter what you look like. i hope everyone reading this who pulls their hair can get to a place where their pulling does not cause them any distress. sincerely, someone with trichotillomania

Living with Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors
Me: *Is super stressed over life.*
Trichotillomania: Time to pull some hair! C'mon. You won't even notice you're doing it. It'll make you feel better.
Me: NO. *Spends 4 days putting hair in a mini twist protective style* There.
Dermatillomania: Hey. Your hands are free. And restless. And dry... Pick your skin. Bleed. Bleed.
Me: Stop! *Starts up a new crochet project to keep hands busy.* Ok cool.
Onychophagia: Hi hi. Your nails are.... perfect biting length... you should do that.
Me: Noooooooooooo *Paints nails.*
Dermatillomania: Oh look, you got some nail polish on your skin. Pick it off... now pick some more...
