Let's seee. It was good, perfectly enjoyable, it reads fast and i was never really bored with it. I'd give most chapters like a 7/10 and then chapters 71-82 like 8 or 9/10 and then back to like 7/10 and the ending was weird but also kinda sweet in its own way.

Now to preface anything else: This isn't my type of manga. I can easily see it being a 10/10 for someone who really likes fight scenes and death and gore and what not. I'm not really into that, I'm a character and story driven person which is why the manga as a whole scored as just goodish to me while chapters 71-82 which kinda make a lot of emotional and psychological aspects of the chapters before them come to culmination scored a lot better. You know I don't GET fights. Chainsaw man was very gory but I didn't even really register it. Like because of all the gore I feel I heard people say it has horror aspects but I never really felt scared or off put or anything. It was just kinda like 'oh a lot of people are in pieces rn, okay, that's a thing that's happening'. So yeah that's why the score is the way it is, it simply isn't a manga that focuses on things I like and that's perfectly alright. I couldn't buy into the hype like I did with jjk and I certently didn't feel 'oh this is the best thing ever' like I felt with witch hat atelier.

With all that out of the way let me talk long and hard about Denji and sexual aspects of the series in a surprisingly positive light:

I like Denji as a character. I think he's still a bit rough around the edges but he's not a character made for introspection so that's fine, you really kinda have to take what he says and how he acts and think about it because the author won't do it for you. That being said, I think Denji is probably the most compelling shonen protagonist I've read so far. Like when I read bnha or jjk I see Izuku and Yuji and I'm like 'this is a shonen protagonist'. They are a likable character but they won't be your favorite character. They are largely made for japanese high school boys to project themselves on and I'm not a japanese high school boy. That being said, Denji feels like a character of his own and not something meant to be projected on to. Honestly if anyone projected on to Denji I'd be worried about them. But that makes him probably the most compelling shonen protagonist I've ever read. You just wanna dig a shovel into his skull and go 'man kid ur fucked up'.

I know when you first read csm you were off put by Denji because it felt like a manga put a pervert character as a protag which is naturally off putting and I can 100% see that. Now be it because I was warned about it first or something else, I didn't actually find fanservice jarring at all. It kinda was integrated into the world in a way that made me think 'yeah of course it's like this'. This is a very grim and rough and drty world and things in it would be just like that. It is a story about base desires and sex is one of those. These are people who expect they will die any day now and Denji is a person who's just now getting to experience a somewhat decent standard of living. Here's a thing I noticed though: even as Denji thinks many sexual things (which, he's a teenager, that's normal) he's actually very respectful. I don't think I've ever seen him touch anyone without their permission, in fact i think things like that mostly happen to him. Like example how Power comes in just as Denji is in the middle of his 'i wanna touch some boobs' phase. You would almost expect that what happens next is we see him try to grope Power as she's sleeping or something. But no, he doesn't do a thing until she asks him to help her save her cat and he gets to touch her boobs for it. And it's like this with p much every other sexual encounter through the series. Both partners are consenting and getting something out of the whole thing. Sexual aspects are used as normal bartering chips in a world where your whole body is a bartering chip. It's normal and no one is forced into it. I've told you before that my biggest misgiving with fanservice is that it's often based on embarrassment and unwilling participation of the girls. Like fanservice isn't fanservice because you saw a boob it's fanservice because you saw a boob when you weren't supposed to, when the girl didn't want you, when she's angry or scared or embarrassed because you did. A lot of fanservice feels very much like taking something from the girl, debasing and humiliating her for the sake of watchers/readers satisfaction.

Despite all it's sexual jokes and themes and everything else Chainsaw man never once made me feel like that. It never once made me feel like the author expected me to gain sexual satisfaction out of debasement of female cast. Which is why even though boobs and naked women are literally all over the manga I didn't mind it at all. It stopped being fanservice and became just a natural part of characters lives as sexuality and sex is a natural part of real world.

Back to Denji.

So I mussed a bit about Denji and Maslow before but here it is in total

Denji is 16 years old and at the beginning of the series he's just starting to have his physiological and safety needs met. Like he doesn't live like a human being at the start of the series and Makima recruiting him is A BIG CHANGE for him. Like for a good while Denji is like 'Now I have three meals a day and a place to sleep at so I'm good with whatever'. He's given reliable sources to fulfil his needs and he's given a way to keep those sources stable. He has a job, it's not a good job but he has it. He has a place to live and a theoretical safety net. He's immortal so there's nothing to fear in the death and injury department which means the otherwise unsafe job is perfectly fine for him. Now what Denji gets stuck on through most of the series is Love and Belonging. Because you can't just give someone love like you can give them food (not that Makima doesn't try). People are more complicated. Compromises need to be made and human connections are hard to establish, especially if you are someone like Denji who has no idea how to interact with others aside from obeying orders. This is why his need for love and belonging first manifests as a sexual need (that and he's an allo teenager). Human connections are hard but sexual contact doesn't have to come tied with connections so it's easier (if unsatisfactory as Denji finds out with Power) to achieve. A lot of Denji's personal growth is tied to him finding out that this need can be fulfilled by other things alongside sex. This is why I love chapters 71-82 so much because they are really a culmination of Denji's emotional journey in that category. Along the way along with sexual love he finds romantic one. He wants to spend time with girls he likes, he wants them to like him beyond the sexual. Of course sexuality is always an aspect of it but after that scene with Power it's never the only thing. Human connection, understanding the other person, knowing them, loving them, making them happy. And it all culminates in the familial love he finds with Aki and Power, taking care of someone and being taken care of for no other reason than they are your family and you love them, you care for them, you want them to be well and happy. There's this scene with Power later on when they are taking a bath together and Denji is like 'huh we are both naked but it doesn't feel naughty at all'. He's stopped seeing Power sexually because he started to see her as his sister and it's just really nice, those few chapters we get to see them as a family are really nice.

By the end of the series Denji starts checking off the esteem box too, by people accepting him and loving him and him feeling like he wants to respond to that, but I feel like that aspect and possible self actualization will be more explored in part 2.

There you have it, my essay about why Denji is the most compelling Shonen protagonist I've ever read :)

Also I really liked the girls in this series, it really isn't afraid of letting it's female characters be weird and gross and in Makima's case just plain evil and I appreciate it for that. I just wish Quanxi got more time and things to do but she's a side character and it's not her fault she's cooler than the whole main cast (Power best girl tho).

I feel like I talked a lot already about what was my most important take away from the whole thing but yeah, in general: pretty entertaining read, would probably be a complete blast for someone who's invested in fights, a little thin on psychology and emotion for my tastes but when it delivers them it delivers them good.

Also I like how it basically ended on 'you should give people more hugs' it was cute

Additionally I think the authors idea to basically release manga in seasons like you would an anime is straight up genius I hope that more mangakas start picking this up because it allows them more rest in between big arcs.

Random Webcomic Reccomendations

This post is dedicated to bringing to the spotlight several webcomics

(some would be considered webmanga but I’m counting them too since they are primarily presented on webcomic websites) which I’ve been enjoying that I hope can get more traction/fandom with this post. Due to my personal tastes I can say many/most have a sci fi or fantasy theming as well as some (definitely not all) have wlw as well.

Since this post will be quite extensive, I’ll first start with a “table of contents” for those who don’t want synopsises or ramblings, but instead just want titles and want to just check them out themselves.

This is a historical semi-fantasy set during the infamous Tulip Mania period of Dutch/European history when people would pay an arm and a leg for even a single potentially valuable tulip bulb.

In this setting we follow two devils Basil and Ludwig and their avian familiars strut into the action, pretending to be foreign investors getting in on the tulip hype, probably to ensnare some desperate souls, all the while keeping man and beast alike from catching sus that they are not as human as they claim to be.

As of writing this the story is just starting up but is already making quite the unique statement. The distinct black and white artstyle is clearly holding homage to the historical “Woodcut” printmaking style in how it’s drawn, lined, and textured, which is a refreshing way to artistically state that the comic is “set in the past” w/o doing just grayscale or sepia tone that one is used to seeing for media set in historical times.

The interactions between the devils as well as the animals they can communicate with so far have been quite amusing.

If you don’t directly use hiveworkscomics for your usual webcomic browsing (so don’t get notified by it) they do have both a tumblr and twitter which frequently announce/link its updates. Bonus following their twitter/tumblr being you get to see occasionally “sketches” (I say that term very loosely) of the characters outside of the webcomic series if you’re into that.

My Dragon Girlfriend

Fantasy alongside modern era setting. It is primarily a wlw webcomic series about a human girl named Christy who is swept off her feet by a dragon girl named Dani, semi-magical/mythical wlw hijinks ensue. It’s hard for me to pin its identity entirely, cause while I wanna say it’s a “Slice of Life” the webcomic is at the point where Dani is fighting a werewolf tooth and nail so it’s hard to pin. It’s clearly romance genre, as even if Dani and Chirsty end up together lickity split (a blink of the eye compared to the slow-burn of most romance stories) there are other wlw subplots going on with secondary primary characters which you’ll be routing for.

It has its steamy moments and implies sex but not so far as to show full-on nudity of the main characters characters. Though there is some nudity of some of the monstergirls such as the fawn girls on the other hand it does not beat around the bush with, but luckily takes the nudity in a natural non-sexual way Correction as of writing this; only the Twitter version shows nudity, they had to censor with bras on Webtoons cause it got flagged.

If you want it hotter/steamier, sign up to the artist’s patreon. It’s definitely a nice softish wlw webomic if you’re craving a lil monstergirl flavour.

Sanguine

Available on Tapas and Webtoons

Full-on adventure fantasy setting set in a world where magic and mages have been persecuted to the point of going into secrecy.

It stars a cute red-riding-hood-like implied secret-royal (that was too much a mouthful) lady named Red, and a tall gorgeous beefy secretly mage lady named Morgan which Red has dragged into her shenanigans with.

It’s early to call this a wlw gem as of the current updates, but it is tagged as lgbt+ so take that with potential further wisdom.

This webcomic uses colour a fair bit to set its tone/mood, but otherwise has a very comfy/warm feeling about it somehow, like some of those old comics/webcomics/novels you would welcome to read while snuggled under blankets. Also the outfits are REALLY nicely designed, and I could definitely see some peeps having fun cosplaying many of these characters.

As the story slowly progresses I am holding with baited breath to how Red and Morgan’s interactions/relationship may or may not evolve, as I am totally an absolute sucker for “friendly/bubbly naïveish character dragging along the cool/grumpy don’t-get-involved character that has a hidden soft heart” trope.

Straylight Tiger

WARNING- while infrequent this one has some blood/gore that will shake you up, though it puts it where it would be most sensible to. Lucky for you most blood in this series is not the usual human-red blood which tones the edge down.

It may have lots of fantasy elements but this one definitely holds its identity as Sci Fi. Set in a futuristic cyberesque city full of both good and bad superhumans (one group being animal shapeshifters and the other being elemental casters), there is an extremist cult out to wreck havoc in the city, so a company responds by recruiting a handful of individuals from all 3 races to make a secret task force to eliminate the threat.

The main character in this story is a secretly-a-tiger shapeshifter named Angeline.

This is probably the most visually colourful of the webcomics in my list and is really using it to charge up its stylistic sci fi setting. Best way I could compare it to; you know those glow-in-the-dark cyber avatars you occasionally see in VRchat? Straylight Tiger matches that visual energy. Of listed so far this is also the most action-packed webcomic on the list. I could almost call it a Trigger-like comic but luckily unlike Studio Trigger it’s not into going nuts on fanservice.

If you’re craving your superhuman sci fi action, this one should at least be checked out. I want to say there’ll be wlw at some point, but it’s too early to call, and if it does I would not expect it to be a major arc when it has larger fish for plot points to deal with.

If you’re craving wlw of at least mc and her weapons-savvy human friend, I highly recommend you checking out the artist Flying Frappe’s twitter to get some sating for you wlw cravings for the two.

Caricophona

Available on webtoons as well as its own webcomic site

Tragic fantasy setting starring a supermagical woman named Veloice as she is hunted by an Assassin. I tag it as there is an undertone of death in some of the arcs, which give this colourfully magical world a more sombre tone. Among the webcomics on the list this one may be steepest when it comes to catching to speed of the world’s setting/rules/hierarchies but once you do you’ll hunger for this more.

I can’t entirely make a perfect comparison for it (Full Metal Alchemist is as close as I could compare and they are still as different to each other as apples and oranges) but it really has that rich nostalgic old manga style/world/tone to it, and its most welcome to as well.

The world building is rich, and Veloice is a mental/magical powerhouse even if at times she has a fragility about her. The fact she’s a Caricophona; magical beings which tend to either get persecuted or expire early at age from their own condition, definitely helps with giving her a almost “glass canon” energy about her.

While those points have definitely helped hook me in, the thing that tends to excite me the most in this webcomic is Veloice’s interactions with the assassin who’s been send to kill her, named Blackbird. The tension between them, the fact Blackbird both wants to toy with her, Blackbird’s somewhat flirtatious nature towards Veloice OMFG I EAT IT UP!!!! They have such a enemies to lovers feeling to them (though no, they are not lovers- we can dream though) which just gets you so excited.

I should also mention there are two other “primary characters” in the group. Two rich naïve kids ready to help Veloice however they can. You grow to like them (even if they hit tropes that may strike a nerve if you’re tired to their character type), but the mvp of this webcomic for character and interaction has to be Veloice and Blackbird.

Amongst Us

Available on webtoons and its own website

Say you like Veloice and Blackbird from the previous webcomic, but find the hefty fantasy setting a bit too much, and you’re more for the romance? What if I told you the artist was galaxy brained enough to make a chiller AU? That is what Amongst Us is; a music college-set slice of life with a slow burn romance between Veloice and Blackbird. They’re dorky, their cute, and seeing some of the characters you’re familiar with in Caricophona in a different setting is nice to see.

In some ways Veloice is less proactive in Amongst Us but still feels very in-character of her. The webcomic would end pretty quick if Veloice were to get-to-the-point with Blackbird after all (granted with how we see them in the future together at the start of the webcomic it’s not like they have to be in a hurry anyways).

Seeing a wlw / slice of life set in a college setting rather than a high school setting is extremely welcome. Please, more of this.

Kiss it Goodbye

Available on Webtoons

Slice of Life high-school beginnings of wlw romance. The artstyle is good, the characters are lovely. We know canonically that they end up together (as the webcomic starts with them in the future where they are a couple, as they begin to weave the story to their curious friends wanting to know how their romance came to be).

It’s not an unwelcome Slice of Life.

BONUS / HONORABLE MENTIONS

Mokepon

Available on h0lyhandgrenade’s website

I have honestly not read this one in a while and dropped it like, several years ago, but it was interesting and is still ongoing, so I had to mention it. Set in the Pokemon universe, it stars the main character who has been thrown into the pokemon trainer career while absolutely wanting nothing to do with it. Ends up becoming a rocket grunt which is an interesting change of perspective from many pokemon fancomics. It has old-nuzelocke energy though it is not a Nuzelocke. Be prepared for the brutality as you cry for the pokemon (especially his pikachu). The undying loyalty of his Charmander as he himself struggles with his position as a trainer/grunt is interesting. He is definitely not the usual pokemon trainer protag you’re used to.

Seven Miles Down

Available on Webtoons

A completed oneshot psychological horror where a girl takes her submarine to the deepest unventured oceanic trench in the world. Tragic end, but horrors can be like that. The psychological nature of the horror is an interesting angle. The rounded cute style may throw you off but it works.

UnDivine

This comic has since been cancelled from continuation, but is the webcomic to set me off in making this list, so it will still be mentioned in memory/tribute, and is the grand example of why you should interact with the webcomics you read as well as share them; there is a good chance they will not hold on their own without fan interaction and traction. Excuse me as I just use two full-on pages cause I’m wearing out on this list and browsing through tons and tons of pages for highlights wears a peep out.

Modern-set religious fantasy on an island where local their religion may be more than it seems. Stars a boy named Daniel, and Esther the Demon girl. From what can be gleaned the Demongirl knew the “god” of the island’s religion and was double crossed, so has a bone to pick with them and their “angelic” entourage now that she’s free when she got accidentally summoned by Daniel.

This webcomic loves its use of blood, but your grow used to it after a point. The setting is interesting, and its also cool to see how the “angels” are far from the usual “pretty human-like” in their true form and are instead more monstrous than you could say even the Demon Esther is.

A lot of what makes this comic interesting, outside of the “revenge against a god” main plot going on, is how messy the characters can be.

Daniel, Esther, and the one angel named Manual are all pretty interesting in how they interact with their roles that they’ve been put in and how they react to others, and are all very morally grey complex characters.

Daniel is an angst machine who tends to really wear himself out (though how he’s positioned/pressured by the world doesn’t help) and shoot himself in the foot a lot, and that’s even before Esther “turns” him into her lil monstrous pawn, not something you commonly see in main characters from the get-go.

Esther (the tall blondie) while being a Demon ready to get her vengeance on is in many ways naïve/childlike despite her powerful nature, and despite using Daniel as her pawn is shown to grow to have feelings/care for Daniel which is very interesting for “The Contracted Devil” position.

Manual…. We haven’t gotten to see a lot but it’s clear he’s meant to be the angelic hero position but its clear he does not like the position, and he also has a thing for a human woman named Rosamaria but we have not gotten to see why that’s the case.

This webcomic didn’t get the traction it needed to keep going, so was recently cancelled by the artist.

i want to give kanae a try , but due to her backstory --- all possible interactions with her will be plotted & have a storyline to a slight degree. random memes can be sent to her , but only after we’ve discussed a plot of some sort . both kocho sisters on this blog are linked in a way , so kanae is mostly here for younger shinobu days , but now there’s an option of having a thread with just kanae !! yay ! *ugly cries*

oh , hey !! a fandomless oc i’ve been working on in the last lil bit ! it’s a horror oc ( cuz ya girl just loves hORROR BABY ) based off of one of my bunnies !! yes , u read that correctly ! my rabbit sassy ( i had for 9 years ) was very peculiar . a lot of rabbits have unique personalities & i’ve grown up with them all my life & never have i seen one act that much like the other . they had distinct personalities -- but sassy was by far the funniest ! in fact , part of my main oc ( hiromi konoe from @wiccanflare ) has some personality inspo from her . obviously , it’s exaggerated to the max & combined with my close friends tho --- but anyway , i decided to make an oc purely based on my dear sassy . btw , due to the nature of the blog , major trigger warnings for fake blood portrayed as real , fake gore portrayed as real , weapons , religious themes , themes of death , partial nudity ( nothing necessarily sexual in nature ) & creepy teeth ? all will be tagged of course , but these themes will be present in writing & visuals . btw , this is a sideblog to this one so i won’t be able to follow back from that blog .

Rating Anime series and movies that I’ve seen

Bakugan

10/10

This was the first anime I’ve ever watched and it was my favourite show as a kid. I remembered it was streamed on the Romanian Cartoon Network in the mid- to late- 2000′s and early 2010′s, so I’ve watched it ever since I was like, maybe 3 or 4, up until I was around 8. It’s an anime with a simple plot but plenty of action and pretty cool characters. I dropped out of it at some point but I’ve rewatched the first 2 seasons when I was 12 and I loved it just as much, or even more since I understood more. Anyhow, Bakugan remains a nostalgia ride for me and I totally reccomend it.

Fairy Tail

It’s a pretty good show, with plenty of plot, nice characters and a cool message. I enjoyed this show a lot when watching it (I remember watching it until maybe after those grand games between the guilds before deciding to just read the manga for some reason) and I could say a lot of good things about it, but there were 2 things that put me off. a) The good guys always won. I’ve never seen Natsu, Erza or Gray ever loose a battle. I’ve never seen them struggle and/or be in need to train in order to get better. They all (including Lucy) just got power ups as they went, without actual training. b) So much fanservice. There’s always something about showcasing the bodies of the female (male too but I didn’t feel so much put on the male characters) characters and a particular amount of perverted jokes coming along with them.

Naruto

One of my favourite shows right here, y’all. It’s a long running anime, with a total of 700 episodes (Naruto and Naruto Shippuden added togheter) plus some spin-off movies and an epilogue movie . It’s a really good anime with many characters build in different ways and many morals. It took me about 8 months to finish the whole show, skipping the fillers. Some things that I didn’t like about it was the ginormous amount of fillers put in it (Shippuden has a percentage of 40% fillers, according to a google search I just did) and certain lacks of character development i some characters. If you need a good action/shonen anime that’s gonna take you a while to finish, I reccommend Naruto.

I’ve heard about how good this anime is for ages and I wanted to start watching it for a long time. I didn’t know what to expect (I start animes I hear of without reading the synopsis, I like to have a surprise) but I had high expectations. Let me tell you, I was absolutely not disapointed. The plot is amazing and so are the characters, who are all unique and complex. Though I’d like to take note that there are various serious topics like politics, death and discrimiation are focused on throughout the series. Also, gore. So if someone would rather not have their mind on such things, I wouldn’t reccomend it.

Boku No Hero Academia

A modern anime with similar vibes to Naruto. I absolutely loved this show from the start. I must say, it’s one of the very few shows that can be light-hearted but serious at the same time. If you are into action animes but also love high school animes, this anime is just for you. The characters are amazing, and the villains are immaculate.

An absolutely amazing anime. It’s mainly focused on classical music, but also what’s behind it. I would leave a trigger warning regarding childhood trauma, depression and phisical illnesses since they’re sensitive subjects. I sometimes felt like the plot was long, but that might’ve been just me. The anime itself isn’t very long, with only 22 episodes. Since I happened to be in my Christmas break when I started the series, it took me only about 4-5 days to finish it.

I can go a bit over Nazis not being socialists also bc I have gotten into arguments about this topic.

Nazis cuddled up with monopolists/big business, protected private businesses, the English word “privatization” was invented to describe their economic policy by the magazine The Economist. They were always anti socialist and anti communist and combined it with antisemitism often using the phrases “Jewish Bolshevism” and “Jewish Marxism”.

Quotes from Hitler’s Mein Kampf, (there’s much more than these, he got very angry over Marx and other Jewish leftists, equating Judaism and communism/Marxism) warning: some antisemitism:

Here’s a 1923 interview transcript with Hitler saying the “Socialist” in National Socialist isn’t about socialism and how he tried to redefine socialist in a nationalist and a “by Aryan people, for Aryan people, while everyone still has private property and stuff” way. Here he also kinda goes over this in Mein Kampf.

Nazis who were left economically only are Strasserists, Strasserists in the Nazi Party were killed in 1934′s Night of the Long Knives with George Strasser being killed while Otto Strasser had been in exile from 1930. Before their revolutions, Russia and China were pre-industrial, agricultural, largely illiterate societies whose masses were peasants spread out over truly vast expanses of land. With the Soviet Union even flourishing and doing great from their planned economy (5 year plans) while the rest of the world was suffering from the Great Depression.

Modern day China is state capitalist. China has the second highest number of billionaires in the world just behind the USA. And Former Soviet countries are now also capitalist with Russia #4 on the list of most billionaires.

Cuba

Cuba has a literacy rate of 99.7%, one of the highest in the world thanks to the Cuban Literacy Campaign of 1961 right after the Cuban revolution. Universal, famously high quality healthcare (doctors are their biggest export, plus they have medical internationalism) and education. Almost half of parliament members are women, Cuba has made great strides in gender equality. Cuba is a direct democracy, while the US is more of an oligarchy, with people mainly winning elections based on their wealth or the wealth of their supporters.

Cuba’s biotech industry is considered the best in the world among developing countries, and has generated important innovations in cancer research, HIV/AIDS research. Cuba created the world’s first vaccine against meningitis B.

Discrimination against LGBT people is illegal in Cuba. It is legal in 30 US states. Cuba has healthcare for all, including trans people, and allows trans people to legally change their gender without surgery. From my understanding, the rights and treatment of LGBT people aren’t perfect but better than US.

Summer anime preliminary reviews

Short, sweet, and to the point. I watched the first episode every new series so that you (hopefully) don’t have to! I try to make my brief reviews as unbiased as possible. My top recommendations from a variety of genres first, then the rest under the readmore in the order I personally liked them. There are a LOT of good anime this season, and I definitely recommend more than the first five.

Kanata no astra

Sci-fi/action. In a future full of space travel, a group of high schoolers are suddenly and mysteriously transported over 5,000 light years away from their home planet; they now must survive and work together aboard an abandoned ship trying to get home. The first episode is long and cinematic, which suits it perfectly. This one seems to have everything; action, mystery, comedy, wonderful character dynamics, sad backstories -- and all done very well. It’s going to be one of the best of the season.

Araburu kisetsu no otome-domo yo

High school/drama/comedy. This one is all about sex -- but it’s not ecchi or fan servicey. Girls in a literature club who are ignorant about sex make it their goal to learn about it as they make their way toward adulthood. If you don’t mind high schoolers speaking frankly about sex and their desires for it, but NOT in a way that seems objectifying or unnecessarily “sexualizing,” then this is an engaging coming-of-age story. It’s certainly different, and I believe it handles the topic tactfully and realistically.

Machikado Mazoku

Comedy/magic. A high school girl wakes up from a dream that reveals she is a demon who must defeat a magical girl and restore her family’s honor. This one’s really funny! It’s a fun twist on the “magical girl” genre. The main character is ditzy in a cute way, and she and the aloof magical girl play off each other really well. I was expecting to be bored based on the synopsis, but I ended up liking this a lot. Whatever you think of the magical girl genre, this series looks great.

Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator

Supernatural/action. In a city full of espers, the previously strongest one is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the head and is now being hunted down by a group of thieves using a special weapon. The main character is the cool, aloof, angry type. Intelligent, cocky, overpowered, an appealing design, and a soft spot for a small child. This character, rather than the plot, is what really drives this anime, at least so far. If he’s your type of character, then this is your type of anime.

Given

Music/BL. A high schooler who has lost passion for his hobbies meets another boy with a guitar with broken strings. He repairs the strings, and the boy starts following him around asking him to teach him guitar. Not much really happens in the first episode, but there are hints of a romance between the boys, which is obviously expected from BL. The animation with the instruments is good, and the characters have potential. For fans of BL or even just the music genre, this one seems pretty solid.

Dr. Stone

Sci-fi/adventure. This takes place in a future where all humans have turned to stone. The protagonists are one that is plain but charming, and another who is an enjoyable smart-ass; together, they start trying to revive all the people who were turned to stone. The characters’ dynamic together isn’t particularly interesting, but each character is enjoyable in their own right. There’s science, primitive technology, and some mystery in this. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Okaa-san Online/Tsuujou Kougeki ga…

Fantasy/comedy. A strange government program sends a boy and his mother into an online game. Having a mother and son dynamic here along with their generational gap in video game knowledge certainly makes for an interesting premise. The mom has a great personality and is surprising in a number of ways, and you can expect family bonding in this as the son is reluctant to have any kind of adventure with his mother. It’s cute!

Bem

Supernatural/horror. Three good youkai fight against evil youkai, trying to save humans as well as become humans themselves. At the same time, there’s a female police officer who gets involved and is fighting against corruption in the city. Warning for some gore. The tone of this show is jazzy and gritty, taking place largely on dark city streets. The characters have yet to be fully fleshed out, but the gritty tone is unique this season.

UchiMusume/Uchi no musume/Uchi no ko...

Fantasy/found family. Also known as “If it’s for my daughter, I’d even defeat a demon lord.” A young man meets an orphaned demon girl and adopts her as his daughter. This is incredibly, incredibly sweet. The first episode is very good at setting up the father-daughter relationship and making you care a lot about the little girl. If you want a cute and pure found-family story, this is the one.

Nakanohito Genome

Gaming/comedy. A group of various gamers are suddenly placed in a real life game where they must play well enough to gather 100 million viewers during what turns out to be a livestream. Think “The Hunger Games” but with gamers. The characters are fun, and it’s an interesting premise worth giving a shot. Give it two episodes before making up your mind, I think.

Kochouki: Wakaki Nobunaga

Historical/action. Based on the real historical figure Oda Nobunaga, starting from his teens and up through adulthood as a warlord. This was surprisingly engaging. The characters and the history are both interesting, and it does a good job of humanizing the historical figures. If you like historical anime, this one’s for you.

Yami shibai - Japanese ghost stories

Technically a returning series, not a new one, but it’s more of an anthology kind of series that doesn’t require previous viewing. Very short episodes, and exactly what it says on the tin. The animation is suitably creepy, and it’s great for a little scare.

Arifureta shokugyou de sekai saikyou

Harem/fantasy. A high school class was transported to a fantasy world where all but the main character gained powerful magical powers, whereas the main character only got a single common skill, and he is ostracized for it. Betrayed and dropped into a dungeon alone, he must fight his way out with newfound powers. The protagonist is engaging, and the action is alright, but the first episode doesn’t reveal much about the plot honestly. It could be worth giving a shot.

Enen no shouboutai

Sci-fi/action. In a not-too-distant future, humans have begun to spontaneously combust. Some have gained the ability to do this at will and retain their human form. A young man who can light his feet on fire at will joins a special task force of, essentially, firefighters who deal with the deadly combustions. This one’s got mystery, an engaging and well-designed misunderstood protagonist, and great action sequences.

Isekai cheat magician

Fantasy/adventure. Two high schoolers are transported into a magical world much like in an RPG. They join an adventurer’s guild where they learn they have unbelievably strong magical powers. The first episode merely sets up the premise, but the main characters’ friendship dynamic is nice, and it has good potential for an “another world” genre show, especially if you tend to like overpowered protagonists.

Vinland Saga

Action/historical. A viking boy, based on a historical Icelandic explorer, hones his skills to avenge his father. Solid animation, high quality in most aspects honestly, but a very slow start to the story. The first three episodes were released all at once, and it seems like they might together be a sort of prologue to the real story. If you don’t mind a slower pace and you enjoy vikings and/or historical shows, this does have a solid plot and solid character building.

Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e

Action/fantasy. The premise of this is somewhat similar to Fairy Gone. One side of a civil war turned to using magic in order to create monstrous super soldiers. They start to develop symptoms that make them too dangerous, and now in a time of peace, one of them makes it his duty to hunt the rest. If you like the action genre, this seems pretty solid. The first episode was just a setup for the premise, but the main character is interesting, and the action scenes are pretty good.

Dumbbell nan kilo moteru

Girls lifting weights! There’s what some may call fatshaming in this right from the start, so if that puts you off, you may want to avoid. Very fanservice-y. But If you’re into the “muscle girl” look, this probably won’t scratch that itch. The female body types actually seem pretty average for anime (even the “chubby” girl) despite the heavy focus on strength training. The main character has a cute personality, and the show is fun with some actual strength training tips.

Cop Craft

Sci-fi/buddy cop. In a city near a rift between Earth and other worlds, a male human police officer and a female alien team up to fight crime. There’s not much to say about this one, it’s exactly what you’d expect from the buddy cop genre with aliens mixed in. It’s good for what it is, and the character dynamic of the two protagonists being opposites is good, so if you like the buddy cop genre, you’ll like this.

Maou-sama, retry!

Fantasy/adventure. A man is transported into a video game that he manages, a world in which is powerful due to his administrative controls over the game and is seen as a “Demon Lord.” He befriends and protects a young disabled girl who joins him on his journey, and their dynamic is interesting. This is a pretty generic anime, but if the “normal guy is transported into a fantasy world” trope appeals to you, you’ll like it.

Sounan desu ka

Adventure/comedy. After a plane crash, a group of high school girls must survive on an isolated island. There’s plenty of “fan service” (things like upskirt shots) which may make some uncomfortable. If that doesn’t put you off, this is otherwise a cute show with an interesting survival aspect to it, where you might actually learn real survival tips.

HenSuki/Kawaikereba hentai demo suki ni natte kuremasu ka

Harem/comedy/light ecchi. The genre alone should tell you nearly as much as you need to know if this one’s for you. A high school boy who wants a girlfriend finds a love letter left for him, along with a pair of panties. He then tries to figure out which of the girls in his life left the letter. There’s not too much to say about it. A cast of mildly perverted girls, and exactly everything else you’d expect.

Joshikousei no mudazukai

Comedy/high school. A group of girls with very different personalities try to navigate their new high school lives, with the main character being obsessed with finding a boyfriend despite being at an all girls school. This is silly and cute, very light in substance, but a nice break from more serious anime.

Tejina-senpai

Comedy/ecchi. A high school boy looking to join a club stumbles upon a girl practicing magic tricks in a “magic club”; however, she makes mistakes during every trick, and he has to help her out when her tricks don’t come out as planned. Keep in mind that this is in the ecchi genre and therefore aimed at tantalizing straight male viewers. If that’s your thing, you’ll find this to be a very cute and funny show.

Granbelm

Fantasy/action. This is a sort of magical girl mecha anime, from what I can tell. A high school girl is temporarily transported into an “illusionary” world full of magic where she learns she’s a descendent of a mage. There’s a heavy focus on both lore building and action scenes. If you wanna see magical girls fight in big mecha suits, this is the place to do it.

Hakata mentai Pirikarako-chan

Slice of life/comedy. Very short episodes about a little girl named Pirikarako. It seems to be mainly for children, having talking fruits in it and being animated in an overly cute style. It’s hard to explain, but it’s very silly and cute.

Re:Stage! Dream Days

Idol/slice of life. A middle school transfer student stumbles upon her school’s “lyrical club,” the members of which want to become idols, only the new girl turns out to have been an idol in the past. The girls are cute, and the singing/dancing parts are fun.

Reviewing every episode of Love, Death, And Robots

Sonnie's Edge: Pretty good! Has some male gaze-y aspects to it but overall it's fun, stylish, and interesting. Sort of subverts the "rape revenge" story in a good way. Not quite as gay as I was expecting it to be, though. Content Warnings: Discussion of rape, on-screen violence cinematically paralleling rape, lots of blood and gore, female-presenting nipples, death

Three Robots: Probably the funniest and most charming that any of the more comedic episodes get. Has some stinkers of jokes but nothing offensive. Mostly just cute and entertaining.

The Witness: Extremely frustrating. Probably one of the most stylish episodes in terms of its animation, but god is the story weak and uninteresting, and it has by far the most gratuitous sexual aspects of any of the episodes. CW: blood and violence, lots of nudity, death

Suits: Very fun episode that looks and feels like a fun video game. Decent story, nice visuals, and charming characters. CW: Animal death, blood and gore

Sucker of Souls: Kinda fun horror-action pastiche, mostly hindered by its anticlimax ending and varyingly-enjoyable main cast. Nice art, the first 2D animation of the series. CW: Lots of blood, death, and gore, and some nudity

When The Yogurt Took Over: It's...fine. Another comedy episode that gets the occasional sensible chuckle out of me but has some big themes it doesn't have the ability to explore properly, and the art style doesn't do it for me. CW: very brief nudity

Beyond the Aquila Rift: Has some interesting ideas but spends a little too much time on straight sex scenes to explore them. Visuals are mostly pretty boring, except for the climactic appearance of a certain character at the end. CW: sex and nudity, spiders

Good Hunting: One of my absolute faves. Puts the "punk" in steampunk by telling a story about oppression, imperialism, xenophobia, misogyny, and slut-shaming. Sometimes the nudity is gratuitous but most of it at least serves the story in a way. Beautiful 2D animation, too! CW: attempted rape, nudity, sexualized violence/torture, body horror, blood and gore, some racial slurs against Chinese people

The Dump: uggghhhh just boring. Just boring and grimy and unfunny, with the exception of the end I guess. CW: brief nudity, body horror, use of misogynistic and ableist slurs

Shape-Shifters: deeply, INTENSELY boring, moreso than The Dump. I love werewolves but this is among the worst takes on werewolves I've seen. Wants to have some kind of message about racism but botches it completely by having the main characters be white soldiers and the main villains being Taliban terrorist werewolves devoid of any personality or motivation. Only thing that comes close to making it worthwhile is it's really the only instance of male nudity as fanservice and the werewolf fight at the end is decent. CW: blood and gore, depiction of war in Afghanistan, werewolf transformation (could be considered body horror by some)

Helping Hand: Legitimately tense survival story in the vein of 47 Hours or Saw. It wouldn't be wholly accurate to say I enjoyed it because it clearly doesn't want you to enjoy watching this, but it did exactly what it needed to and accomplished it well. CW: very visceral and realistic body horror, the bleak encompassing void of space

Fish Night: One of the most visually beautiful episodes, I would recommend this one purely for the visuals alone. Its story isn't bad, but isn't particularly interesting. It serves the visuals more than anything. CW: deep sea creatures, blood and death

Lucky 13: Fairly run of the mill military sci-fi story, accomplished rather well. I enjoyed it but I could easily see it boring a lot of folks. CW: blood and death, lots of gun stuff

Zima Blue: Probably my absolute favorite episode of the bunch. Zima Blue has gorgeous visuals and by far the most well-told and interesting story of any of these episodes. It's extremely ambitious and lives up to it so well. CW: I honestly can't think of any

Blindspot: This would be a fun little cyberpunk heist story if the characters weren't all completely and utterly devoid of charm. CW: gun stuff, cyborg body horror

Ice Age: The only episode that is mostly not animated but rather live action. A fun and intriguing little magic realism story. CW: animal death

Alternate Histories: ohhhh my godddd boringggggggg its not funnnnnyyyyyy but i mean if you just wanna see cartoon Hitler die a bunch, and I get if you do, I...guess you can check this one out. But. God it's just nothing. Art style's kinda ugly too. CW: death, blood and gore, Hitler and Nazi imagery, nudity and sex

The Secret War: this is just a long cutscene from a video game I would hate if it existed. Real boring. CW: lots of gun stuff, blood and gore, nudity+body horror

Dust Watched: Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen

Genres: Mystery, Supernatural, Vampire [R-17+] // 1 movie, sequel (x)

Finally the prequel with Oshino’s first appearance being one of the best in anime history. Warnings: gore, tumor tits (looked disturbing not gonna lie)

✧ art ✧

Watching this in the theaters in 3D must’ve been a mindfuck. The backgrounds are photo realalistic while the characters are hand drawn (sometimes they even lack shading to make them more cartoonish). Close up shots are well detailed but faraway shots of characters can get a little wonky.

While watching this is definitely an experience I’m personally not a big fan of this mix and match artstyle. There is no particular reason, it just doesn’t look pleasing to me. And I must mention, Hanekawa looked like she was drawn by a hentai artist. Her boobs looked like literal tumors. (7/10)

The OST gives the feeling of a victorian story which fits this vampire arc well. And big props to whoever did the sound design. The way multiple voices/sounds overlay in certain scenes gave a unique feeling to what was happening on screen. (9/10)

IMO you’ll either hate or love the way the movie is structured. There are many drawn out scenes which can be either taken as “building atmosphere” or “oh shit we have to make this movie longer cause there isn’t enough story”. Also, this is literally a prequel movie aka long time viewers will get pretty much no new info. On one hand, this is good. The movie works as a standalone completely seperate from the series. On the other hand, people who are familiar with the story and aren’t engaged enough by the visuals may be bored. The humour is also a double-edged sword. The atmosphere is very dark, much darker than the series itself and thus the funny scenes may feel out of place. As I said, I was more or less content but it was no way perfect. (7/10)

✧ characters ✧

What surprised me the most was Araragi’s character. He isn’t as jaded and used to all the paranormal shit happening as he is in the series and thus his fear and mannerisms are incredibly interesting cause this isn’t what we’re used to. He still makes some questionable decisions and he is still a perv but I enjoyed his character in this movie a lot.

The other main one is Shinobu or Heart-under-Blade (or Kiss-shot). Her character goes threw so many characterizations it’s incredible (in a negative or positive way, you decide). That scene is really impactful and I greatly enjoyed it on some disturbing level.

And then there’s Hanekawa who was only used for fanservice and exposition. Yeah, that I disliked. (7/10)

✧ OVERALL ✧

As this is part of a triology I wasn’t expecting much from the first movie. It introduced us to the main characters and the conflict. It was decent but nothing to go crazy about.

Help I'm stuck at home and I don't have any anime to watch I've already seen pmmm and flip flappers and I need suggestions for what to watch I'm fine with any rating and genre help me please you're my only hope

I don’t watch that much anime in general, but here are some of the ones I’ve enjoyed! In descending order, from personal favorites to things I’ve watched mostly out of boredom.

Kill la Kill - Starts as a parody of fanservice-y fighting anime before taking a harsh left turn into genuine drama, though it’s still very silly and has a lot of heart. Content warnings for violence, gore (mostly comedic) and themes surrounding sexual assault (played for drama).

Princess Tutu - Surreal fairy tale-inspired story about a duck who becomes a magical girl.

Sailor Moon Crystal - Retelling of one of the genre-defining magical girl stories. Its objective quality is debatable, but I absolutely enjoyed all the flashy colors and good vibes, especially in season 3. Content warning for a weird incestuous time travel subplot that I still don’t understand the point of, though?? wtf sailor moon

Little Witch Academia - Cute story about young witches going to witch school. Also very feel-good and fun, with the added bonus of no incest. we have high standards here

School-Live! - A bait-and-switch “looks cute in the first episode, but isn’t” kind of thing similar to PMMM. I won’t spoil what it’s really about, but I will say that I really like the characters and the way they’re treated by the narrative, and it has an interesting setting. Content warning for gore.

Magical Girl Raising Project - While I may put myself in danger of angering a fanbase somewhere, I’ll be honest: in my opinion, this one is objectively terrible. However, it does have that soap opera “I don’t actually care what happens to these characters, but I want to know what’s going to happen next” feeling to it. Everyone dies in horrible, unnecessary ways that the narrative tries REALLY HARD to convince the viewer is REALLY SAD, even though most of them have a total of four minutes of screentime and zero development. One thing I love is the character designs and all the potential the characters would’ve had in a different narrative, though, so if you don’t mind bad writing for the sake of getting to look at cool characters, this one is definitely recommended despite its flaws. Content warnings for violence, gore, excessive character death, and sexual harassment themes in a subplot, all played for drama.

I’ve done my best to tag each series as liberally as possible, to enable those with certain tastes to find shows that meet said criteria. Thus, in order to avoid confusion, this is (hopefully) an exhaustive list of the various tags I use, and the meanings behind them, so you can better find what you are looking for! I will do my best to constantly update this list as I add more tags, and to then go back and re-tag older series to keep them up-to-date with this list.

All tags are surrounded in ‘single quotes’, since apparently underlined text doesn’t work...

Possible Content Warning/”Filter” Tags Since tumblr doesn’t yet let you filter content to not see certain tags, the following tags will be used on all shows that don’t have the specified content. For example, the tag “filter: nudity” will be present for all series that don’t feature any form of nudity, so that by searching through the tag “filter: nudity”, it will act to hide any shows that feature nudity of any sort. Most filter tags have two versions (they aren’t necessarily worded similarly though, so check the descriptions below): one that eliminates all instances of the specified content, no matter how brief or minor (good for serious triggers/aversions), and another that only filters out major instances of the specified content, but allows for brief or minor instances to be allowed (good for content preferences/minor triggers). In addition to these tags, each show’s overview mentions what sorts of possibly explicit content may be present and, if said content is localized to a particular episode or season, which parts to avoid if you still want to enjoy it. However, even shows that only have single, localized instances of explicit content will still be tagged accordingly (thus, even if a 4-season show has only one 5-minute graphic sex scene, it will still not show if one filters by sex or sexual implications)

‘filter: nudity’ Filters out all shows with any amount of nudity present (i.e. displaying a character in anything less than their appropriate undergarments).

‘filter: major nudity’ Filters out all shows with full-body or graphic nudity (i.e. displaying detailed bare genitals/breasts and/or depicting one or more fully-nude bodies). Does not filter out depictions of non-graphic & partial nudity.

‘filter: sexual implications’ Filters out all shows that depict or imply any sort of lewd, sexual, or otherwise provocative behavior between one or more characters.

‘filter: sex’ Filters out all shows that depict or imply the action of sexual intercourse between one or more characters. Does not filter out depictions of lewd, suggestive, or otherwise sexually provocative behavior that don’t involve sexual intercourse.

‘filter: pda’ Filters out all shows that depict or imply non-sexual, non-suggestive forms of physical intimacy such as kissing, spooning, or other instances of PDA. Note that the content or action doesn’t necessarily have to be “public” to be tagged, the filter just happens to encompass anything that is deemed equally or less-acceptable than what is commonly referred to as “pda” or “public displays of affection”

‘filter: intimacy’ Filters out all shows that depict graphic or intense bouts of non-sexual, non-suggestive, physical intimacy such as heavy making out, or extended periods of close snuggling. Does not filter out more casual depictions of affection such as non-lip kisses, short lip-kisses, hand-holding, or brief scenes of cuddling.

‘filter: shock’ Filters out all shows that include major jump-scares, or any intense depiction of a scene with the intention to elicit shock or fear. Includes shows that may have periods where there is an abrupt or rapid back-and forth change in volume or brightness that could possibly alarm or startle the viewer.

‘filter: violence’ Filters out all shows that include frequent depictions or implications of intentional harm or violence to other living beings. Does not necessarily include shows that use minor violence for comedic effect (such as intense cheek-pinching, ear-grabbing, or head-bopping).

‘filter: gore’ Filters out all shows that include graphic depictions of blood, gore, or injury. Does not include intense violence that is implied or depicted without accompanying gore.

‘filter: incest’ Filters out any show that implies or depicts any sort of non-platonic relationship between siblings, cousins, or other family members.

‘filter: bestiality’ Filters out any show that implies or depicts suggestive actions involving any non-human and/or any human depicted as having animal-like traits.

Genre Tags

‘shoujo ai’ (alt. ‘shojo ai’, ‘shoujo-ai’, ‘shojo-ai’) Sort of a “yuri-light”; this subgenre generally features f/f romance without any form of sex. Characters may be younger, and thus less mature, or their relationship may just be depicted in a very PG light. Generally not nsfw.

‘ecchi’ The borderline between shoujo and straight-up hentai; this subgenre may or may not feature any romance or actual sex, but does often feature plenty of “raunchy” sexual implications. Occurrences such as panty-shots or liberal boob-physics are likely to be plentiful here, so think a PG-13/R rating that’s generally nsfw.

‘hentai’ This subgenre will usually feature actual sex or nudity between characters, and will absolutely be nsfw. There probably won’t be much that fits into this category on this blog; it will serve as more of a warning that “this show is basically just porn”, but if that’s what you’re looking for...

‘slice of life’ (alt. ‘slice-of-life’, incl. ‘drama’) This subgenre usually entails shows that don’t have much of an overarching plotline, and instead resorts to showcasing the everyday lives of the various characters. The characters themselves and their various relationships are usually the main focus of the show, and things are generally pretty ordinary and realistic when compared to real life. ‘drama’ is similar to (and mutually inclusive with) slice-of-life, but often includes some over-arching plot (or frequent multi-episode plot-arcs at the very least) that highlight one or more inter-personal conflicts, and is usually more serious or, well, dramatic, than other typical slice of life series.

‘magical girl’ This subgenre is usually one of the cliches that people think of when they think “anime”: the protagonist (who is typically female, with a larger supporting cast of female friends), who has up until now been an ordinary schoolgirl, receives some magical powers through a twist of fate, and she (and possibly her friends) are asked to save the world from some mysterious evil. The clash between good and evil is usually the main focus of the show, and there is no limit to how crazy things can get.

‘action’ (incl. ‘action/adventure’ and ‘dark action’) This subgenre is incredibly broad, typically defined by its large amount of action/fight sequences. ‘action/adventure’ is the cross between characters having some larger adventure in mind, and resorting to fighting as a means to arrive at their destination. ‘dark action’ is usually a cross between the apocalyptic or supernatural horror genre, and the intense, plentiful, and intricately choreographed fighting of the action genre.

Content Tags

‘fluff’ (alt. ‘fluffy’) Generally refers to the “warm fuzzy feeling” that you feel when two characters are really enjoying time together. Generally involves cuddling, hand-holding, or possibly kissing, among other things, but these are not necessary for instances of fluff.

‘fanservice’ Not to be confused with any form of intimacy/the ecchi genre, fanservice is typically any instance of non-cannon or out-of-character behavior that is depicted purely for fans to gawk at the characters. The cliche “swimsuit/pool/beach” episode is an example of fanservice, as are instances of characters having sexual fantasies about other characters. Rule of thumb: if the scene exists purely for the benefit of the viewer, and not for the benefit of other characters in-universe, it’s fanservice.

‘subtext’ Describes instances where there are behaviors that could be read as gay crushes/romance/relationships/etc., but nothing is ever stated explicitly to confirm it.

‘canon relationship’ (alt. ‘canon relationships’) Any instance of two characters being in a canon and explicitly stated romantic/sexual relationship together. The main characters themselves need not necessarily be the ones to state the nature of their relationship, but somewhere the words “dating” or “girlfriend” (among a few other possibilities) must be uttered in a serious manner to describe the relationship. The opposite of subtext.

‘crush’ (incl. ‘unrequited love’) Includes instances where one character is explicitly stated to have romantic or otherwise not strictly platonic feelings for another character, regardless if anything comes about as a result. Crushes need not necessarily be explicitly stated to be included (i.e., just because a character doesn’t utter “I think I’m in love with Ai-chan...” doesn’t mean it won’t be tagged). ‘unrequited love’ includes instances where the object of A’s affection explicitly does not return A’s feelings, though doesn’t necessarily need to tell A about this, or even know that A has feelings for them.

‘love triangle’ Encompasses any general relationship where three or more characters have romantic feelings for each other that conflict in some way. It may be that A and B both have feelings for C, and C must choose between A and B, or that while A has feelings for B, B instead has feelings for C (and C may even have feelings for A!). These conflicting feeling-webs may be incredibly intricate, and include up to 8 different characters, but the trio is the common example.

‘miscommunication’ Any time a major conflict occurs as a result of someone misunderstanding someone else. Often amusing in comedic situations, and downright frustrating in dramatic situations. Shows abusing miscommunication for the sake of adding dramatic tension or even to drive entire dramatic plotlines is a personal pet-peeve of mine, so I’ve chosen to tag any series that do so.

‘ymmv’ (”your mileage may vary”) Shows in which, for one reason or another, there is a good chance that my opinion of the show (either positive, negative, or neutral) may significantly differ from yours.

‘personal recommendation’ Shows that are my personal favorites, and that I would highly recommend.

‘happy ending’ Shows where the ending is happy, or at least hopeful and indicative of happiness to come. (As opposed to those bittersweet or heartbreaking endings that sometimes catch you off guard...)

Bookshelf Briefs 9/19/19

A Bride’s Story, Vol. 11 | By Kaoru Mori | Yen Press – Back to Bookshelf Briefs with this volume. Not that it’s not good; it’s very good. But I don’t have a lot of detailed analysis about it. This is possibly a slower-burning romance than even Amir and Karluk, as Mr. Smith is an English Gentleman and Talas is chasing after love after several husbands have all passed away. The “husband and wife” part goes quickly—in fact, Smith proposes almost immediately—but, as with a lot of couples in this series, actual romance is awkward and relatively innocent—the best part is a ride on a swing where we finally see Talas fully open up emotionally. In any case, we now get to go ALL THE WAY BACK, as Smith and Talas decide to reverse his journey. Which means we get to check up on everyone. Peaceful reading. – Sean Gaffney

Cells at Work! CODE BLACK, Vol. 1 | By Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya | Kodansha Comics – Yikes. I knew this was going to be a bit more serious than the main series based on the premise, which is that we see a red and white blood cell in a crappy body that’s smoking, drinking, impotent… the works. But this ran in a seinen magazine, and is not afraid to pile on the gore… as well as the boobs. A lot of the cast die trying to save the body, the liver is portrayed as a host club with girls galore, etc. In among this is the aggrieved Red Blood Cell, male in this spinoff, and his stoic White Blood Cell friend, who is also busy dealing with the fact that White Blood Cells are vanishing. Heck, even the Killer T’s get brainwashed and then arrested (and presumably executed). For hardcore fans only. – Sean Gaffney

Cells At Work! CODE BLACK, Vol. 1 | By Shigemitsu Harada and Issei Hatsuyoshiya | Kodansha Comics – One of several spin-offs of Akane Shimizu’s Cells at Work, Code Black takes the same premise—personifications of human cells, viruses, bacteria, etc.—and moves the action to, well, a body that’s really not doing so well health-wise. The first thing I noticed about Code Black was its mature content warning. In part this is earned due to subject matter (for example, one chapter deals with erectile dysfunction), but also because the creators incorporate a fair bit of fanservice into their interpretations of physiological processes (the white blood cells’ breasts are barely contained by their uniforms and rest and recuperation in the liver includes some nudity.) Code Black also examines the effects of smoking, drinking, and sexually transmitted infections. (Someone is having a rough time of it.) While the original Cells at Work is so far the stronger series, Code Black, like its predecessor, can be both entertaining and educational. – Ash Brown

A Centaur’s Life, Vol. 17 | By Kei Murayama | Seven Seas – After the anime of this aired, and perhaps after hearing from fans, I’ve been noticing that the lesbian members of the class have been appearing more and more and getting more and more out. Though here we hear that it’s not lesbian but “yuri” as yuri is “pure and innocent,” which is meant to be pointed commentary, I believe. If so, it fits right in with the rest of A Centaur’s Life, which continues to have things like parasites trying to blend in while taking over human hosts, kaiju monsters helping to save battleships, and Manami straight up beating her grandfather into the hospital when he accuses her sword style of being soft. I honestly have no idea what’s coming next. Nor does the author, I suspect. – Sean Gaffney

Giant Killing, Vol. 16 | By Masaya Tsunamoto and Tsujitomo | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – The flashback to Tatsumi’s playing days concludes with him being branded a traitor for accepting an offer with an English team, even though he only did it so his teammates would no longer be so dependent on him. Back in the present, he’s seeking the help of Kasano, the man who recruited him to ETU in the first place, to help bring in some promising new players. This whole scene—“I know his faith isn’t dead yet”—made me unexpectedly verklempt. And then it’s time for a midseason training camp, where Tatsumi attempts to foster team unity by subjecting his players to various weird tasks. I love how skillfully the creators depict that this strategy is actually working, and that some players are discovering abilities they didn’t know they had. I’m glad volumes of this have started coming out again! – Michelle Smith

Haikyu!!, Vol. 34 | By Haruichi Furudate | VIZ Media – A high five made me cry. Honestly, that probably tells you all you need to know about Haikyu!! and how Furudate-sensei creates characters so beloved that readers celebrate with them. Finally, Karasuno and Nekoma are facing each other on a national stage, and what really got me here is that Tsukishima and Yamaguchi prove that Kageyama and Hinata are not the only rookie duo to look out for. Yamaguchi’s floating serve paired with Tsukishima’s blocking proves a very effective strategy, only possible because various people have helped Tsukishima both with technique and with allowing himself to shed his reluctance to really try. Unfortunately, Karasuno still can’t manage to win a set off Nekoma, and the volume ends as the second set begins. I’m sure this’ll be a game that spans multiple volumes, but man, is it going to be a good one. – Michelle Smith

Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Vol. 5 | By Waco Ioka and Midori Yuma | Viz Media – Sometimes all you need is one customer with pull to turn things around. So Aoi finds when she ends up serving a tanuki who enjoyed her boxed lunches and is also a writer… and when he enjoys her meals and also (natch) finds out about her grandfather, he gives the place a write-up. Of course, now that it’s doing better it’s also attracting attention, as Aoi is asked to cater to another couple where the husband is a yokai and the wife is human—what sort of food would serve them best? And yes, there’s more romance here and there, but for the most part this has become a food title. My one complaint is it’s too short—the lower page count means less plot happens. – Sean Gaffney

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, Vol. 37 | By Shinobu Ohtaka | Viz Media – Let’s get the big complaint out of the way: a series that began with a fun cast of three ends with only two of them saving the day, despite a token attempt to have Morgiana do something. She needed to be in the final battle. Still, Aladdin also gets a bit shafted, as in the end this is Alibaba’s journey and his story, as it’s his choices that prove to carry the day time and time again, to the point where they save the world—admittedly a world that is a bit topsy turvy. And we do end with a wedding. Magi got a bit drawn out by the end, and a lot of its best fights were interrupted by lectures and platitudes, but I was happy to read it, and will miss it now that it’s over. More Shonen Sunday series, please! – Sean Gaffney

Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 3 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – My wish is granted in this third volume, which has no short stories at the end and is entirely about Shirayuki. She’s still trying to deal with the first prince, and also her own self-doubt. Things are not helped when Prince Raj, the jerk who started this whole mess, shows up on a visit between royals. Fortunately, he turns out to merely be an immature schmuck (tum-tum may be the funniest part of the book), and his presence actually makes her feel better about herself. Which is good, because we continue to get vague romance, and politics, and both of those have to be solved by Shirayuki being clever and plucky. A volume that shows why fans were clamoring for this license for so long. – Sean Gaffney

Wonderland, Vol. 3 | By Yugo Ishikawa | Seven Seas – I must admit, I was expecting the main cast to stay shrunk for the entirety of this title, so seeing our heroines (and the old guy) return to normal due to the power of hot baths was very startling—it was startling to them as well. Unfortunately, Yukko’s parents are still dead by cat, though they also appear to now be normal sized—but still dead. So Yukko is going back to school and attempting to process everything. Fortunately she has her friend Takuya. Unfortunately, she also has a government minder, and she seems intent on erasing Takuya’s memory of everything that happened. I suspect “cast vs. the evil government” may be the theme of this series, but will Yukko shrink again? And can she reunite with Alice? Still weird, still good. – Sean Gaffney
