thoughts I've had while re reading poa as a marauders fan, part one (chapters 1 - 4)
(id just like to point out this is my first time reading the books since middle school and first time I've read the books since I became a marauders fan in 2020)
chapter 1
- ok so ye the Weasleys are really poor, but if they're "extremely poor" you'd figure they'd use their money for something other than a vacation
-I forgot sweet little hedwig existed djdjdjdkdjd
-someone please eat the rat
-let the future cat have him pleaseeeee
-why did I start to dislike hermione so much again??? maybe it's just movie hermione I hate and I can't remember the differences between the two
chapter 2
-why are most of the antagonistic characters portrayed as fat and why is the fact that dudley is obese brought up so many fucking times like that seems pretty fat phobic of you Rowling
- when actually reading and thinking about the Harry potter books and movies I imagine the actor that played sirius and not the fanart marauders sirius I'm more used to, and apparently his hair is depicted as elbow length in the books not shoulder length WE WERE ROBBED. could have had long haired sirius with a bun in ootp
- also I swear marauders Era Sirius and golden trio era Sirius (so canon and fanon sirius) are two completely different people in my mind
- also forgot "muggle" news talked about sirius
-just finished the chapter and seriously he is so sassy (guess that's what you get when you're Sirius and marlenes godson, and James and Lily's actual son)
- also I really fucking hate how much mental abuse is glazed over here like????
- it happens every summer and he's forced to return to his abusers like wtf
- this is why I don't like Dumbledore very much
chapter 3
-forgot padfoot wasn't like an actual dog sized dog
-lowkey forgot about padfoot in general ngl
-bro harry are your really throwing precious and innocent Neville under the bus rn come on dude seriously
-ok like when they mention Sirius I can't help to think of the dramatic, gay, Remus obsessed Sirius from all of the wolfstar text posts I've read
-also the fact they have to clarify what a gun is in the wizard news is wow
-same with Ron not knowing how to use a phone
-no wonder these people keep having Wizarding wars and unstable teachers at their schools
- love how this 13 year old kid is panicking over the possibility of going to wizard prison for breaking one rule
-also side note the more I read the more I feel like Daniel Radcliffe portrayed him super well
- hedwig supremacy
- "ur the literal wizard president" "yea but I'm not ur guardian dumbass I can't sign ur permission slip what in hell is this"
- why is reading stans parts so fucking hard
chapter 4
- ah Florean Fortescue the one genuinely nice adult in these books (isn't he like Alice's dad or something?) I just remembered her last name is actually more or less a headcanon uhhh that's fun
- the Irish quidditch team are actually mentioned along with the quidditch world cup even Harry's checkin out the firebolt
- coincidence that Dean and Seamus are mentioned at the same time? I think not
- seriously jkr why do you keep giving kids abusive gaurdians and acting like it's nothing (talking about Neville and his grandmother)
- "...Ron looking incredibly freckly, Hermione very brown..." (pg 55 in my book). when first reading this part years ago I registered it as Hermione was black/poc and not that she was just tan from the sun lmao
- I swear crookshanks was James' old cat and that's why he hated peter
- also Percy wow this why you don't befriend stray rats man
- the things this rat has seen go on in Percy's and Oliver's dorm room....
- still probably not as bad sharing a dorm with Remus and Sirius tho
- I love the twins sense of humor
- but guys stop messing with my precious baby Percy he's just- an autistic overachiever doing his best guys
- ..."he lost everything..." Yes Sirius did in fact lose almost everything Arthur but not bc what you think happened dude
- "he's safe with Dumbledore-" yea fucking right /sar
- "stationniong soul sucking demons around a school is such a good idea hehehehe" /sar
- literally there's no fucking way McGonagall thought Sirius did it- literally fucking refuse to believe that she did
going to start another post for chapter 5 bc oh boy it's going to be long

For months, GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has been dog-whistling to supporters of extremist far-right ideologies and wild conspiracy theories like QAnon. On Wednesday night, at the fourth Republican presidential debate, Ramaswamy went full tilt: After blasting the three other debaters for turning on former president Donald Trump, Ramaswamy argued, without evidence, that the January 6 Capitol riot was an inside job, the 2020 presidential election was stolen, the government had lied about 9/11, and the “deep state” was responsible for all these things.
Then, Ramaswamy claimed that the “great replacement theory is not some grand right-wing conspiracy theory, but a basic statement of the Democratic Party’s platform.” The great replacement theory is a widely-debunked conspiracy that the liberal establishment, along with a cabal of “global elites,” is encouraging the immigration of people of color in order to “replace” white voters.
Immediately, white supremacists online celebrated the reference to the racist and antisemitic conspiracy.
Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist influencer who was livestreaming his reaction to the debate on the alternative streaming platform Rumble, appeared visibly shocked that Ramaswamy went so far. He watched open-mouthed as Ramaswamy continued to boost wild conspiracies. “Let’s go,” a visibly delighted Fuentes told his thousands of viewers.
A clip of Fuentes’ reaction was posted on X by Irish antisemitic and anti-immigrant influencer Keith O’Brien, known online as Keith Woods, with the comment: “Time to mainstream this discussion across the West.”
The post quickly racked up tens of thousands of likes and shares, including from Ramaswamy’s own official X account. “Repost by Vivek, very cool,” O’Brien wrote on his Telegram channel. “We love Vivek.”
“When someone like Ramaswamy promotes great replacement and other conspiracy theories, he's platforming a violent and paranoid ideology to a mainstream audience. It's clear that he speaks the language of conspiracy theory believers, antisemites, and extremists—many of these same people have embraced his candidacy,” Mike Rothschild, an author who writes about conspiracy theories and extremists tells WIRED. “And he's speaking to these people not to help his DOA campaign, but to cement them as his future base for whatever he does next in this world. It's a dangerous and cynical ideology.”
Ramaswamy subsequently deleted the post from his feed, but within minutes of Ramaswamy boosting the conspiracies, verified accounts on X and major far-right influencers on platforms like Telegram were celebrating. “Vivek says ALL the RIGHT things,” John Sabel, a QAnon promoter known as QAnon John, wrote on his Telegram channel.
Jordan Sather, another QAnon influencer, claimed that initial media reports of Ramaswamy spouting conspiracy theories “prove that Vivek kicked ass on the debate stage last night.”
Ramaswamy did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED. The night before the debate, the candidate also boosted the conspiracy theory on X in a post calling the theory “basic immigration policy for Democrats.”
“We know this conspiracy theory can drive people to kill,” Jared Holt, extremism researcher at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, tells WIRED. “If this supremacist lie is further embraced by political leaders, I think it's reasonable to worry that the chance of violence will increase.”
The once-fringe theory has been cited as a motive by multiple mass shooters in recent years. It has been boosted not only by online far-right influencers but also mainstream right-wing figures like Tucker Carlson, who pushed the great replacement theory hundreds of times on his former Fox News show.
“The “great replacement” is just one of several iterations of racist “white extinction” theories that radical right actors have injected into American politics throughout the years. It’s motivated far-right extremists to carry out acts of grotesque racial violence, whether in the United States or abroad,” Hannah Gais, a senior researcher at the Southern Poverty Law Center, tells WIRED. “At times, these theories have mainly found favor among the far-right fringe. In other cases their embrace among more mainstream political actors has led to devastating policy changes, such as the use of racial quota systems in immigration law.”
The great replacement theory has also been used across Europe to justify the rise of authoritarian regimes, such as that of Viktor Orbán in Hungary. It was recently cited as an excuse for the violent riots that engulfed Ireland’s capital last month.

Meaning of names in Succession
Connor - derived from Irish Conchobar: cú - meaning "hound, dog, wolf" and cobar - "desiring".
The eldest son, lonely wolf, longing for love and appreciation. The (perceived) lack of love from his family and Willa pushed him so far that he doesn't even see that running for president is insane. He's happy that there are Conheads, that he's part of the conversation. And (of course) the dog motif - kicked dog that knows to keep the safe distance, but he's still coming back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kendall - valley on the river Kent; ruler of the valley. It probably derives from a Celtic words meaning ‘exalted high’ + ‘image effigy’.
Water motif... The rulller of the valley - valley of death? Ken's depression made him believe that the only way out is to die. In death he thought he might take control of his life. Exalted high - first being anointed as a successor, number one, but ending as the effigy (makeshift dummy used for symbolic punishment) - like during the interview in the first episode of season 2 and how he's supposed to be sacrificed at the end of that season. But he still wants to rule, so tries to kill his father and present himself as a warrior of righteousness. Trying to be nobel, telling himself that he's a good guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roman - most likely evolved from Romulus, the legendary co-founder of Rome. Remus and Romulus were the sons of Rhea(sic!), and their father was Mars (God of War). King Amulius ordered that infants be drowned in the Tiber River. They were found and nursed by the female wolf. Brothers first worked together, but in the end Romulus killed his brother.
So, water motif again - two kids left for death in the water, but survived - like surviving abusive childhood. The ruler who killed his brother - Rome tried to work with Ken in the first season, but in the end betrayed him, first declaring his loyalty to Logan at RECNY, then during the vote, or when he ambushed Ken about Vaulter. Someone who survived, and won (he's the one Logan still wants), but for what cost - it tears him apart, the idea of killing his brother again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Siobhan - means God is gracious, God's grace
Shiv - gracious daughter, favorite child. Knows how to act. Mix her politics views with the meaning of word gracious - "courteous, kind, and pleasant, especially towards someone of lower social status". But she is also Shiv - an improvised dagger that she had to become to survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Logan - Irish-Gaelic: clan name, means "little warrior"; Scottish-Gaelic - territorial clan name derived from Lands of Logan, from the Gaelic log/lag meaning "hollow" or "little hollow"
The ruler of the Land, king of the family, the warrior whose whole life is a battle. He also embodies the double meaning of the word "hollow" - there are empty spaces in this empire he built.

From a Reader:  I enjoyed your lesson about the meaning of "quick." Here's another context of the phrase, "the quick and the dead." When I was drafted into the Army in 1966, during basic training we had a session on fighting with a bayonet affixed to the tip of a rifle. The drill sergeant informed us that, in a bayonet fight, there were only two types of participants: the quick and the dead. Fortunately, I never had to get in a bayonet fight, because I wasn't very quick. AH

Dear Diary. As the New Hampshire primaries are just around the corner, I am truly so sick and tired of seeing such bullshit on my electronic babysitter.
If you’re anything like that young child that I met, then you’re truly an idiot. This child, probably about sixteen or so, who thinks he knows something about politics. He sits in front of screen scrolling through various social media sites and he believes all of the fodder.
I remember asking him if a woman should have autonomy over her body. I sincerely think he did not know the definition of autonomy. He began to quibble with me and another guy about the bible and how those words were playing out in front of him. So…I brought up Ezekiel 23, Verse 20 - “There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emissions was like that of horses.” Google it.
Then there’s Leviticus 18. Talking about being naked. Child. Please. The fucking hypocrisy of it all. To the best of my knowledge, certain men in power, or those higher in the caste system, they’d use a young boy for their pleasure. If you care to, the Bible has several sketchy and several blatant areas of nakedness and nasty things like lying between her breasts. Gick. I know. What you do, I don’t need to know just like most men will never admit that they urinate in the shower.
Then I see the electronic babysitter spew the volcanic vortex of voluminous vapid viscous vitriolic vomit from various vacuous vacant vagabonds s such as they are valedictorians of valuelessness.
If you’d like to get extremely technical down to the molecular level, just past the double helix, Nimarata Randhawa, is an anchor baby. Yet she continues to deny her heritage. I celebrate my ancestors because I’m Swish. I’m half Swiss and half Irish. My people came from Switzerland and Ireland. Also, she gives off those Susan Collins of Maine vibes. Say one thing today, Thursday, and then by Friday night, “What I meant to say was…”
Then there’s another triggering moment: something about the two most hated politicians are … and I know. I’m not an idiot. Then there’s Florida.
Look here Motherfucker, listen and hear what I say: No matter who are for or against, you’ll get screwed in the end. I’ve been involved in politics a great portion of my life. I remember, I was involved with a group called, “Young Americans for Freedom,” and they protested the Vietnam war. I clearly remember being at a rally where Bob Hope spoke about his involvement as an entertainer and his thoughts about the Vietnam War. Child. Please. If I could actually recall what he said, I’d post it here, but I was like eight or nine back then.
To bring this RANT to a close, yes, we all can say quite clearly that we ALL have issues with politicians starting off with the Dog Catcher up to the President and the folks in between. Chaos, negativity, and just plain bullshit from the past. Yeah, we fucking know. As a Grey Panther and just your every day pedestrian Arrogant Bitter Old Qween, I am not going to apologize for anything, but do know this, we currently have an ADULT residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. They want us to live in our truth, they want us to thrive and they want us to have cognitive dissonance. The others want to scam us, bamboozle us, give us lots of smoke and mirrors and then without realizing it, its round up time. Time to cull the herd and unbeknownst to y’all, some are getting on the box car and getting a number tattooed on their wrist.
Lastly, it was “Infrastructure Week” for how many months? Where’s the Healthcare Plan? If someone can actually show ONE PIECE OF LEGISLATION that benefitted absolutely everyone in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico and I’ll make sure Ronnie Milsap is your Uber Driver.

Maui residents had moments to make life-or-death choices (AP) The smoke was starting to blot out the sun. Winds were howling, and heat bore down as flames licked the trees on the horizon. The power had been out all day, so Mike Cicchino thought he’d drive to the hardware store for a generator. He turned off his street, and in an instant, his Lahaina neighborhood seemed to spiral into a war zone. “When I turned that corner, I see pandemonium,” he said. “I see people running and grabbing their babies and screaming and jumping in their cars.” Cicchino and his neighbors had just moments to make decisions that would determine whether they lived or died in a race against the flames—a harrowing, narrow window of time in one of the most horrifying and lethal natural disasters the country has seen in years. They were on their own, with their families and neighbors, to choose whether to stay or to run, and where to run to—through smoke so thick it blinded them, flames closing in from every direction, cars exploding, toppled power lines and uprooted trees, fire whipping through the wind and raining down.
Not Your Typical Summer Camp (AP) This Friday, U.S. President Joe Biden will host South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Camp David in Maryland. The allies will discuss the usual topics, with North Korea’s nuclear program and Beijing’s growing diplomatic power at the top of the list. South Korea and Japan are key footholds for the U.S. military presence in the Pacific region, hosting tens of thousands of American troops. Combined, the two countries are home to about the same number of American soldiers present in all of Europe. The Camp David summit is expected to annoy North Korea (which views U.S.-South Korean military drills off its coast as a provocation) and has already sparked a response from China. “China opposes relevant countries forming various cliques and their practices of exacerbating confrontation and jeopardizing other countries’ strategic security,” said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tuesday. “We hope the countries concerned will go with the trend of the times and do something conducive to regional peace, stability and prosperity.”
Free cash for the Irish (NYT) ATMs across Ireland were swarmed this week by people looking to withdraw large amounts of money. But it wasn’t a run on the banks: Word had spread that customers at the Bank of Ireland, one of the country’s largest, were apparently allowed to withdraw money they did not have. A glitch at the bank allowed some customers to move around $1,000 with no change shown to their account balance. But the windfall didn’t last. The issue was solved, and the bank plans to subtract the withdrawal amounts from those accounts and charge overdraft fees to those who took out more than they had on hand.
Ukraine’s Unseen Army: The Mechanics Who Keep the Tanks Rolling (NYT) A battered worker’s van whizzed back and forth along a village road near the front line in southern Ukraine, searching. It screeched to a halt, and three men unloaded heavy equipment and disappeared into the undergrowth. What they were looking for, dug in and hidden under the trees, were three hulking British-made armored vehicles known as Mastiffs. Supplied to the Ukrainian Army for its attempt to retake Russian-occupied territory in southern Ukraine, the Mastiffs were in need of a service. “They call us the dog handlers,” Serhii Ivanov, the leader of the maintenance team, joked, referring to a nickname that came about because many of the armored vehicles they service were named after breeds of dogs: Mastiffs, Huskies, Wolfhounds. Behind the thousands of Ukrainian troops assembled along the 100-mile front line for the counteroffensive is a small army of mechanics, engineers and weapon technicians responsible for keeping Ukraine’s growing fleet of Western-made tanks, armored vehicles and other equipment in working order. They work in forest camps or in disused buildings a few miles from the front line, or as mobile breakdown teams, taking their services to military units where they are deployed to avoid towing equipment on long journeys back to base or even to factories abroad.
Choosing Service over Safety (Christianity Today) The Ukrainian military didn’t have chaplains before the war. Occasionally, pastors and priests would embed in a unit as civilians, but that was all. After the invasion, though, things changed. Faced with tremendous horrors, soldiers have begun to ask for chaplains. And so, in March, the Ukrainian Chaplaincy Service was born. By July, the Ukrainian military had 160 official chaplains and many more volunteers. Joel Carillet wrote one such volunteer. A pastor by the name of Vasily Povorozniuk, this volunteer chaplain regularly drives more than 500 miles to minister in Bakhmut. A former military man, Povorozniuk looks to the Roman centurion Cornelius who was sent by an angel to the apostle Peter (Acts 10). Carillet writes, “It was a soldier and his family and friends who were able to take the message of Jesus Christ to the pagans, Povorozniuk says. How many non-Christians can he and his family and friends reach in Ukraine if they are willing to not worry too much about safety?” At no small risk to themselves, chaplains and volunteers like Povorozniuk minister through everything from snacks to spare tires. They serve coffee, listen closely, and pray with the bereaved when loved ones are killed. They bear witness to tragedy and bring comfort to the hurting.
German minister cancels Pacific trip after plane mishap (Washington Post) German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was forced Tuesday to call off a foreign policy trip to the Pacific region after two failed attempts to fly from the United Arab Emirates to Australia on a government aircraft. The canceled visit is just the latest in a string of trips by German officials to be affected by problems with aging government planes. Some experts have ascribed the problems to the policy of buying used aircraft to economize. The 23-year-old Airbus A340 aircraft, named the “Konrad Adenauer” after the first chancellor of West Germany, landed in Abu Dhabi to refuel on Monday but returned shortly after takeoff because of a malfunction with the wing flaps. After the plane completed a successful test flight, the foreign minister made a second attempt to fly to Sydney in the early hours of Tuesday, but the plane turned around yet again after the captain informed passengers that the malfunction had recurred. The aircraft ended up circling for two hours while it dumped 80 tons of jet fuel to reduce its landing weight.
Pakistan crowd vandalises churches, torches homes after two accused of blasphemy (Reuters) A Muslim crowd attacked a Christian community in eastern Pakistan on Wednesday, vandalising several churches and setting scores of houses on fire after accusing two of its members of desecrating the Koran, police and community leaders said. The attack took place in Jaranwala in the industrial district of Faisalabad, police spokesman Naveed Ahmad said. The two Christians were accused of blasphemy, he said, adding they and family members had fled their homes. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan and though no one has ever been executed for it, numerous accused people have been lynched by outraged crowds.
A Company’s Financial Crisis Threatens China’s Economy (NYT) Country Garden, a Chinese real estate giant, has lost billions of dollars and racked up $200 billion in unpaid bills. It’s on the hook to deliver, by one estimate, nearly one million apartments across hundreds of cities in China. The privately owned developer, founded by a farmer three decades ago, is inching closer to default. In China’s housing market, there are plenty of deadbeat developers no longer paying their bills. The possible collapse of Country Garden is one to pay attention to. A default by Country Garden would be the latest in a string of collapses in a housing market that has been hurting for years. Emerging from paralyzing lockdowns during the pandemic, China’s leaders badly need the country’s economic engine to pick up. Instead, growth is sputtering as housing prices fall, people spend less and consumer and business confidence wanes. Experts fear that Country Garden’s troubles will spill over into the broader financial markets, thwarting any possible recovery of the real estate industry and spreading the damage through the economy.
Japan’s labor crunch is so acute that companies are hiring 70-year-olds (Quartz) In Japan, an aging population has created a massive labor crunch in the country. Japan Inc., though, has found a solution in the problem itself: Hire older workers. Last year, four in 10 companies hired people aged 70 or more, Nikkei reported, citing the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Other options are few and far between. A weakening yen has made Japan an unattractive place of work for foreigners and also driven Japanese youth in pursuit of higher-paying jobs to go abroad—a double whammy. Compounding the problem is a low labor participation among women, who tend to experience gender pay gaps and a lack of support in advancing their careers.
Nigeriens call for mass recruitment of volunteers as the junta faces possible regional invasion (AP) Nigeriens are preparing for a possible invasion by countries in the region, three weeks after mutinous soldiers ousted the nation’s democratically elected president. Residents in the capital, Niamey, are calling for the mass recruitment of volunteers to assist the army in the face of a growing threat by the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, which says it will use military force if the junta doesn’t reinstate the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum. ECOWAS has activated a “standby force” to restore order in Niger after the junta ignored a deadline to reinstate and release Bazoum. The initiative, spearhead by a group of locals in Niamey, aims to recruit tens of thousands of volunteers from across the country to register for the Volunteers for the Defense of Niger, to fight, assist with medical care, and provide technical and engineering logistics among other functions, in case the junta needs help, Amsarou Bako, one of the founders, told The Associated Press Tuesday.
Heed lessons of Libya, Algerian foreign minister says after Niger coup (Washington Post) Three weeks after the coup d’etat in Niger, the chances of a return to democracy are dwindling. Ousted president Mohamed Bazoum remains imprisoned, and the junta has rounded up hundreds of people it deems potential political opponents. Coup leaders said late Sunday that the military would prosecute Bazoum for treason. Pro-coup Nigeriens, meanwhile, have held mass demonstrations, with some waving Russian flags and chanting anti-French slogans. The military takeover on July 26 set off alarm bells throughout the region and among Niger’s Western allies, which have supported the fight against Islamist militants in the Sahel. A regional group of governments known as ECOWAS threatened military intervention if the coup plotters did not restore Bazoum to his post within a week—raising the threat of war in West Africa. But Niger’s neighbor to the north is urging caution, worried about the potential for international intervention and sanctions to further destabilize the region. Algeria shares a nearly 600-mile border with Niger. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said, “I personally, and many in Algeria, do not see any example of military intervention in cases like this that has succeeded. And we have in our neighborhood the example of Libya that has proven catastrophic for the whole region, and we are paying the price. Those who have conducted the foreign intervention have left the country. And they left us with this tragedy, with this crisis on our hands. ... You can start a military intervention, but you never know how it will end.”

Burnin’ all illusion tonight: the revolutionary struggle against colonial violence continues.
In the wake of the police murder of 17-year-old, Nahel M, in Nanterre, the working-class youth of France and its external colonies have set the empire brilliantly aflame with their incandescent rage. President of the Rich, Macron, has called out his 45,000 dogs of class war, reportedly firing live ammunition and other lethal projectiles into crowds of protesters. In polite response, nearly 80 police stations have been attacked and the sacrosanct capitalist private property regime is burning. This is all unfolding against the backdrop of the ongoing nationwide strikes rejecting the punishing neoliberal baton being thrust down the throats of French workers. Here in Australia, state slayings of Indigenous youth, such as Kuminjayi Walker in Yuendumu, continue to be perpetrated with impunity by a heavily militarised police force recruited and equipped from the leftovers of the Australian-assisted imperial occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. Kuminjayi’s killing by cops was one more brutal moment in a very long, dark history of colonial violence in this country.
There have been at least 516 Indigenous deaths in police custody just since the last “commission of enquiry” in 1991. Prior to this, the 1984 murder of an Indigenous youth, John Pat, in the north-west of the country, had set the wheels of anticolonial resistance into motion only to be continually suppressed by force, the utterly futile promises of official enquiries and continuous state assaults on Indigenous people and their lands.
In the face of this, the Australian Indigenous community itself and assorted allies have been tireless in radical grass roots organising against police violence since the very beginning. In 1984, we invoked the international solidarity between Indigenous youth and the anticolonial uprising of Irish youth being targeted in police “shoot to kills” in Derry and Belfast. Forty years later we again invoke that love and solidarity against state violence.
All power to the radical imagination of the anti-colonial working class!

Cragwood Padraic
he Portsmouth Star
Portsmouth, Virginia · Friday, February 08, 1929
When president Collidge leaves the White House kennels will also change occupants. In addiction to Mr. Hoover’s police dog, King Tut, Mrs. Hoover will bring two dogs recently registered, Cragwood Padraic, an Irish wolfhound, and Bellhaven Behoover, a collie. Padraic will be the first of his breed to live in the White House kennels, although he is a splendid representative of what is believed to the oldest breed of canine history. The Irish Wolfhound – given to Mrs. Hoover by a former schoolmate, Mrs. Norwood Browning Smith, of Urbanna, Va – is still a puppy, yet he stands nearly thirty-six inches high at the shoulder and weighs about 140 pounds. He is less than a year old. He may become swift, strong and handsome; it is doubtful if he will ever become fierce. If he takes after a line of famous ancestors, he will have a good temper.

"5 gunmen captured in shootout at Weston residence in Ireland," The Globe and Mail. August 8, 1983. Page 1 & 2. ---- [AL: That time Galen Weston, the father of Galen Weston, Jr., the current head of price-fixing grocery chain Loblaw's in Canada, was almost kidnapped by the Provos.] DUBLIN (Special AP) - Four gunmen were seriously wounded yesterday at the country home of Canadian supermarket tycoon Galen Weston when anti-terrorist police exchanged gunfire with a gang of masked guerrillas. Five men were captured but two escaped.
Police had received a tip on a possible kidnapping or robbery attempt and were lying in wait for the heavily armed gunmen at the secluded lakeside mansion in County Wicklow, about 45 kilometres south of Dublin.
Mr. Weston, 42, multi-millionaire chairman and president of George Weston Ltd. of Toronto, was at Windsor in England, where later in the day he played for the Maple Leafs in a polo match. The family also has a residence south of Windsor at Sunningdale and a home in Toronto.
Police sources said the outlawed Provisional Irish Republican Army was behind the apparent kidnap attempt. No group immediately claimed to have been involved in the shooting.
One of the wounded men was reported to be in critical condition in hospital, and three were described as "serious but stable." The fifth captured man was being interrogated in Dublin.
Last night the BBC said police had been expecting a kidnap attempt for two weeks and planted a decoy car at the estate "to make the gang believe the family was at home."
The terse police release said that "not less than five men" opened fire when surprised by members of the Special Task Force - the elite anti-terrorist squad that routinely provides bodyguards for politicians who returned the fire.
Police said the shootout occurred shortly after 8 a.m., but people camping nearby told reporters they were awakened by the crackle of machine-gun fire at about 4 a.m.
According to a senior officer there was a vicious hail of bullets involving at least 100 shots. The terrorists, wearing coveralls and balaclavas, "were well-prepared, that's for sure," one source said.
Two of the gang staked out the magnificent white mansion from neighboring fields, apparently ready to cover any escape attempt by the occupants, while the rest moved up to the house, the sources said.
In normal circumstances it would have been easy to do so undetected. The house lies at the end of a long tree-lined drive, and there are wooded areas all around the 200-acre estate at Roundwood, an isolated farming community deep in the Wicklow hills.
By the end of the battle the two men in the fields, one of whom may also have been wounded, had dumped their coveralls and balaclavas and fled. Last night police were combing the hills and woods nearby with tracker dogs.
Through his family company Mr. Weston has the controlling interest in one of the biggest supermarkets and clothing chain stores in Ireland, Quinnsworth and Penney's respectively.
Like most rich businessmen living in Irish country houses, he does not advertise his presence in the country. In the past few years scenic County Wicklow has attracted a number of best-selling writers, horsebreeders and trainers, and businessmen, some of whom have received "door knocks" from the IRA threatening reprisals unless they contribute to the "freedom fighters' fund."
In one case a dinner party of distinguished guests was tied up and robbed of money and jewels, the house ransacked for valuables and paintings. Rather than risk vengeance by filing charges or helping police, the guests agreed to say nothing.
It is not, however, usual for members of the Special Task Force, which is usually occupied in anti-terrorist duties on the border with Northern Ireland, to provide a guard for anyone but a politician. In the Weston case "they just got a tip off," one police source said.
The force has been on the alert for possible kidnappings since the October, 1981, abduction of Irish supermarket millionaire Ben Dunne, who was released unharmed after his family paid a ransom of about $1-million.
Mr. Weston is one of nine children of Garfield Weston, who parlayed his father's small baking business in Toronto, founded in 1882, into a multi-national conglomerate that includes the Loblaw supermarket chain and, among other subsidiaries, E. B. Eddy Forest Products Ltd. and William Neil. son Ltd. Galen Weston is a director of Associated British Foods Ltd. and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
His Irish-born wife, Hilary, founded the Ireland Fund of Canada in 1979 to support peace, culture and charity in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The fund makes donations to recognized Irish charities.
The Westons have two children.

WISDOM OF BEN STEIN
Ben Stein is a satirist in the political realm.
These are a few of his observations about our situation.
Some of you will find them humorous and some will be enraged .
I find them sad and accurate
I never dreamed that I would have to face the prospect of not living in the United States of America, at least not the one I have known all my life. I have never wished to live anywhere else. This is my home and I was privileged to be born here. But today I woke up and as I had my morning coffee, I realized that everything is about to change. No matter how I vote, no matter what I say, something evil has invaded our nation, and our lives are never going to be the same. I have been confused by the hostility of family and friends. I look at people I have known all my life--so hate-filled that they agree with opinions they would never express as their own. I think that I may well have entered the Twilight Zone. We have become a nation that has lost its collective mind! You can't justify this insanity:
If a guy pretends to be a woman, you are required to pretend with him.
Somehow it’s un-American for the census to count how many Americans are in America.
Russians influencing our elections are bad, but illegals voting in our elections are good.
It was cool for Joe Biden to "blackmail" the President of Ukraine, but it’s an impeachable offense if Donald Trump inquires about it.
Twenty is too young to drink a beer, but eighteen is old enough to vote.
People who have never owned slaves should pay slavery reparations to people who have never been slaves.
People who have never been to college should pay the debts of college students who took out huge loans for their degrees.
Immigrants with tuberculosis and polio are welcome, but you’d better be able to prove your dog is vaccinated.
Irish doctors and German engineers who want to immigrate to the US must go through a rigorous vetting process, but any illiterate gang-bangers who jump the southern fence are welcome.
$5 billion for border security is too expensive, but $1.5 trillion for “free” health care is not.
If you cheat to get into college you go to prison, but if you cheat to get into the country you go to college for free.
People who say there is no such thing as gender are demanding a female President.
We see other countries going Socialist and collapsing, but it seems like a great plan to us.
Some people are held responsible for things that happened before they were born, and other people are not held responsible for what they are doing right now.
Criminals are caught-and-released to hurt more people, but stopping them is bad because it's a violation of THEIR rights.
And pointing out all this hypocrisy somehow makes us "racists"?!
Nothing makes sense anymore - no values, no morals, and no civility.
People are dying of a Chinese virus, but it's racist to refer to it as Chinese even though it began in China.
We are clearly living in an upside down world where right is wrong and wrong is right, where moral is immoral and immoral is moral, where good is evil and evil is good, where killing murderers is wrong but killing unborn babies is AOK!
Wake up America, the great unsinkable ship Titanic America has hit an iceberg, is taking on water, and is sinking fast.
Speak up!
