Inspired by the bold flavors of Thai street/drinking food, Night + Market Song is a well-known, busy hot spot popular with celebrities and chefs. The menu includes snacks, spicy salads, curries, hot pot soup, house specialties, noodles, rice, stir-fries, sweets, wine, beer, etc. I’m told that their “mild” spice level is still pretty spicy (6 on a scale of 10 according to the employee). On the building it says “world famous fried chicken sandwich.” They have vegan options. Prices are pretty reasonable for Silver Lake.

Catfish tamale ($17): catfish & pork fat baked in a banana leaf with chili and herbs. The flavors were explosive. The catfish pieces were tender (the banana leaf keeps everything moist) and covered in ground chilies and herbs like lemongrass, ginger, garlic, turmeric, shallots, etc. It was spicy, maybe a 8 on a 10 point scale. The ground aromatics were too salty though. Eating it with sticky, sweet rice helped.

Sticky rice ($4): sweet sticky rice

Mango & coconut rice ($12) ripe mango, sticky rice, coconut sauce. This was complimentary – a full size mango sticky rice. I gave it away but appreciate the gesture.

The music was lively even during lunch. Service was very friendly. It’s colorful inside with plants, bright walls, beaded curtains – like stepping into a bar in Thailand perhaps.

They’ve opened a few locations and the head chef wrote a cookbook. He was also named Food & Wine’s Best New Chef of 2016. They’re only open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays. No reservations.

There on the table are the heaped platters of a shared meal, apparently abandoned without another thought.

The promise of "sleeping together" renders the previous impulse, to enjoy food, moot ? What ?

We've seen this before, too, more than a couple of times. Is this bad writing, or is it essentially inevitable, in service of keeping the story moving ? And is it credible ... or is it another example of a distracting error, of continuity if not of good taste (pun acknowledged) ?
