There’s a guy in my grade who I’ve known since we were 5 (my school is prep-12 and for reference we are now in grade 11) and looking back on photos of us (we used to be like best friends) is crazy. Cause we look alike, but he got to actually grow up in his own body. And I get so so much gender envy from him it actually makes me cry. (I’m ftm he/it) And it’s so hard to tell cis people about cause they might think it’s stupid or just not really understand, and how can they?

I wish I were him so bad. He’s everything I wanna be, and not just in his appearance but also in his hobbies and interests and talents and humour.

and it makes me ache and just this grief for a boyhood fills me and it’s just so unfair. I know he has his own issues, his life isn’t perfect. But it doesn’t change the fact that I just wish I were him so bad.

Grieving for a boyhood is totally valid and an experience that many transmascs share. Honestly gender envy can be a bittersweet feeling because you can find someone really cool and "gender", but it also can make you feel like you aren't cool/don't pass enough. I am very excited for my friend Ravyn to get top surgery later this year! If you are able to help out even a dollar or two it would mean a lot! I drove him to the consultation appointment in SF last month and got to sit in while a really amazing surgeon impressed us with his knowledge of all of Ravyn's current diagnoses and how they shouldn't impact his surgery at all. Getting top surgery changed my life immeasurably for the better and I think it will for Ravyn as well <3

You shouldn’t have to be trans to get any sex characteristic-related surgery. It’s not a limited resource. Plenty of cis men get implants and cis women get breast reductions. From Colby Gordon today and Leslie Feinberg in Transgender Warriors (1996).

starting HRT doesn't have to be a huge momentous all-or-nothing decision. you can just try it like you would an antidepressant you've been informed of the risks of.

there won't be any immediate irreversible changes overnight. you can always stop, change your dose, change your delivery system, decide it's not the right time. you can even microdose if you want to.

you don't have to tell anyone. you don't have to announce it if you don't want to.

stop waiting for a perfect time in your life because it won't come.

stop waiting to reach a mythical level of certainty that never comes to anyone, for anything.

you've been thinking about it long enough. if you have the opportunity, just give it a shot. you're worth the courage it takes to make a change in your life.
