Learning that fans hated Applejack and called her "boring" is crazyyy to me because I genuinely, unironically believe AJ's the most complex character in the main six.
Backstory-wise, she was born into a family of famers/blue collar workers who helped found the town she lives in. She grew up a habitual liar until she had the bad habit traumatized outta her. She lost both her parents and was orphaned at a young age, having to step up as her baby sister's mother figure. She's the only person in the main gang who's experienced this level of loss and grief (A Royal Problem reveals that AJ dreams about memories of being held by her parents as a baby). She moved to Manhattan to live with her wealthy family members, only to realize she'll never fit in or be accepted, even amongst her own family. The earlier seasons imply she and her family had money problems too (In The Ticket Master, AJ wants to go to the gala to earn money to buy new farm equipment and afford hip surgery for her grandma).
Personality-wise, she's a total people-pleaser/steamroller (with an occasional savior complex) who places her self worth on her independence and usefulness for other people, causing her to become a complete workaholic. In Applebuck Season, AJ stops taking care of herself because of her obsessive responsibilities for others and becomes completely dysfunctional. In Apple Family Reunion, AJ has a tearful breakdown because in she thinks she dishonored her family and tarnished her reputation as a potential leader –– an expectation and anxiety that's directly tied to her deceased parents, as shown in the episode's ending scene. In The Last Roundup, AJ abandons her family and friends out of shame because believes she failed them by not earning 1st place in a rodeo competition. She completely spirals emotionally when she isn't able to fulfill her duties toward others. Her need to be the best manifests in intense pride and competitiveness when others challenge her. And when her pride's broken, she cowers and physically hides herself.
Moreover, it's strongly implied that AJ has a deep-seated anger. The comics explore her ranting outbursts more. EQG also obviously has AJ yelling at and insulting Rarity in a jealous fit just to hurt her feelings (with a line that I could write a whole dissection on). And I'm certain I read in a post somewhere that in a Gameloft event, AJ's negative traits are listed as anger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subtextually, a lot of these flaws and anxieties can be (retroactively) linked to her parents' death, forcing her to grow up too quickly to become the adult/caregiver of the family (especially after her big brother becomes semiverbal). Notice how throughout the series, she's constantly acting as the "mom friend" of the group (despite everything, she manages to be the most emotionally mature of the bunch). Notice how AJ'll switch to a quieter, calmer tone when her friends are panicking and use soothing prompts and questions to talk them through their emotions/problems; something she'd definitely pick up while raising a child. Same with her stoicism and reluctance at crying or releasing emotions (something Pinkie explicitly points out). She also had a childhood relationship with Rara (which, if you were to give a queer reading, could easy be interpreted as her first 'aha' crush), who eventually left her life. (Interestingly enough, AJ also has an angry outburst with Rara for the same exact reasons as with EQG Rarity; jealous, upset that someone else is using and changing her). It's not hard to imagine an AJ with separation anxiety stemming from her mother and childhood friend/crush leaving. I'm also not above reading into AJ's relationship with her little sister (Y'all ever think about how AB never got to know her parents, even though she shares her father's colors and her mother's curly hair?).
AJ's stubbornness is a symptom of growing up too quickly as well. Who else to play with your baby sister when your brother goes nonverbal (not to discount Big Mac's role in raising AB)? Who else to wake up in the middle of the night to care for your crying baby sister when your grandma needs her rest? When you need to be 100% all the time for your family, you tend to become hard-stuck with a sense of moral superiority. You know what's best because you have to be your best because if you're aren't your best, then everything'll inevitably fall apart and it'll be your fault. And if you don't know what's best –– if you've been wrong the whole time –– that means you haven't been your best, which means you've failed the people who rely on you, which means you can't fulfill your role in the family/society, which makes you worthless . We've seen time and time again how this compulsive need to be right for the sake of others becomes self-destructive (Apple Family Reunion, Sound of Silence, all competitions against RD). We've seen in The Last Roundup how, when no longer at her best, AJ would rather remove herself from her community than confront them because she no longer feels of use to them.
But I guess it is kinda weird that AJ has "masculine" traits and isn't interested in men at all. It's totally justified that an aggressively straight, misogynistic male fandom would characterize her as a "boring background character." /s

i recognize that simon and edwin meeting and parting in hell is narratively very good and provides closure for all. but imagine if simon had agreed to try and escape with edwin. and charles doesn't have time to really question it, because anybody who likes edwin is aces in his book and it's hell, they need to leave. (edwin, out of courtesy to their third companion, puts his plan to confess on hold until they've escaped.)
suddenly the edwin harem of "supernatural boys who all hate each other but are attracted to that negative rizz" gains another member, and at some point edwin is going to have to mention that simon was the boy who sacrificed him to hell.
the chaos. crystal's bitchy commentary. charles going from friendly smiling to clutching his cricket bat. niko's whispering "200k slow burn schoolboy rivals to lovers" with heart eyes. it'd be chef's kiss good. edwin fleeing to his books and praying that nobody, but especially not the cat king, finds him because there has been SO MUCH emotion already. hysterical.

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
#love how they manipulated people into spreading that post by making it seem like a cishet vs gay thing#when the real message is OP thinks trying to sell your writing is cringe and 'weird' and 'normal people' with jobs would never#which would of course never have flown on the fandom website#so they played into the queer shipping is purer than cishet shipping puriteen thing#and it worked!#because my god people are gullible#this is the direct pipeline that leads to AI thievery#''normal' people write for the joy of it anyway so why do you need pay? you are just greedy and 'weird'!'#'oh no this isn't about who we get to call cringe and who gets to profit from art it's about um...#(quick what's a hated m/f ship?).. oh uh 'shitty' REYLO#and not our super pure uh... (spirk is still popular right? lets throw in that avengers one too to make it seem timely) stucky!'#I'm sorry if I have no sense of humor about this but the year is 2024 and people are still way too ready to sneer#about writers trying to earn a fucking living in the shittiest timeline#and i need you to look deep into yourself and ask you why it's so important to you to tell yourself that only people writing what you like#are 'normal' with real jobs and to vilify everyone else as 'weird' and 'shitty'#for trying to make an income during a financial fucking crisis#i would say sorry for ranting about this but I'm not sorry because wtf#write whatever you want#publish whatever you want#there is no moral fucking purity in what the content is#and one thing certainly doesn't make you more 'weird' or 'normal' than the other#like there is soooo much shitty mlm that started as fanfic???#that post is 100% OP made up some guys to get mad about and called them relyos for the clicks#writing#publishing#writblr#writeblr#i wasn't going to tag this anything but you know what fuck it I'm mad#i had like 5 more tags but tumblr cut me off which is fair 😅#fan fiction

thinking about L Change the WorLd vs DN Anime parallels again so here's a thoughtdump (basically just an extension of this because I do have more in-depth thoughts about these)
Just. The contrast between how they each react to the other's death. Ough.
When L dies Light is, frankly, a pathetic mess about it. I mean the funeral scene speaks volumes on its own but it's also about how despite the hatred and utter spite Light has there's also that almost petty respect he has for L when he meets Near, how pissed he is at this dude for basically being a "mockery" to L's legacy. It's contradictory. He hates this guy, he'll gloat about the man's death to his own grave, he'll stare off into space and still see his face, he respects him more than he did anyone else, it's a fucking mess.
Meanwhile in LCtW L is openly sentimental about Light's death from the start. Where Light was Coping and Seething while trying to destroy what's left of L's legacy L decides to keep Light's watch (a useless, broken watch, which is really just another one of Light's murder weapons) not out of spite or pettiness or a sign of victory but just for remembrance. He Knows that he was Kira, it's something that only a handful of other people know, just him and the taskforce, and he talks about Kira with some other people in the novel, about what he did, but he still remembers him and mentions him first and foremost as a friend. His only friend, even.
It's about the way they remember each other when they're about to die (if we're taking the anime version of death note at least)
Like, Light goes into the Yellow Box Warehouse thinking that this is it, this is where he'll finally destroy any trace of L that's left. His successors, his task force, destroy his name and title, destroy his role as a false detective and simply Be Kira but he ends up failing anyway. When he firsts realizes he's lost, he's flailing and panicking and running, and while he's running all he really has his regret. When he's laying on the stairs and after Ryuk writes his name, while the credits are rolling, he looks pained when they show the close up shots of his face. But in the last few scenes after they reveal the vision of L that subtly changes. He doesn't struggle in the last few seconds like every other character that dies in the show, or even the way he did in the manga, he just closes his eyes while seeing L stare back at him. In contrast to the way that he dies in the manga Light's death here could almost be interpreted as peaceful. Hell, the way he looks during the close-up shot of his eye is almost calm.
("That was like. The last 1/1000th of Light's life and it was spent on L lmao" - One of my irls)
Meanwhile L is (for the mostpart) far more accepting of his fate from the get-go. There's nothing left that he could take from Light, everything he'd built up as Kira was already being dismantled anyway, but even then L doesn't think illy of him at all. If anything he finds himself regretting the fact that he couldn't make Light see where he'd gone wrong, I think it's pretty fair to assume that he wished that Light didn't have to die at all (but L's still dying no matter what. so,).
And on his Final day alive he still decides to take the time out of his last day to go to the Yagami household and pay his respects to Light. Even in his literal last minutes alive he thinks of Light welcomingly. When he addresses him that last time it isn't as Kira, and he almost never goes out of his way to think of what he did as Kira unless someone else brings it up, instead he just thinks of Light, his friend that he hopes to see again. It's crazy.
It's This Shit (yes I put this in the first post but shh)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fucking. L thinking of Light and Mu in his last moments and dying peacefully vs Light seeing L as he realizes he's going to die and dying in the most peaceful way he ever does in literally any adaptation of Death Note
It's about the way that they're both portrayed seeing the other's 'ghost'. I hate everything by the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's about how they both feel lost in a sense after the other is gone, when they're finally unrivalled.
It's about the fact that L points out at the beginning of the series that he can tell that both he and Kira are childish and hate to lose, but at the end of the anime Light has to come face-to-face with the realization that he was still defeated by L, and in LCtW L concedes that, yes, he did ultimately fail to catch Kira, and was still defeated by him in a sense.
Tumblr media
Just. Holds head in hands.
It's Light destroying anything L had left, still trying his hardest to do so until his own downfall vs L making the conscious effort to preserve the memory of who Light was (who he really was, because only the taskforce knows he was Kira, not even Misa or Light's family) and choosing to remember him even in his last moments. It's Light fucking cackling and gloating at his own victory at L's own grave vs. L having Light's broken watch around his own wrist for safekeeping vs. Light believing that Near will never live up to or replace L as the world's greatest detective vs. L still referring to Light as "his only friend" when talking about him to others. It's about L already coming to terms with his death and welcoming the world of nothingness with Light vs Light running at the end of his life still thinking he can defeat L, before seeing him after Ryuk finally writes his name in the Death Note. Idk the contrast is just. Holds head in hands. Like the fuck is wrong with both of them.
You know, the plot of LCtW takes place over the course of 23 days and starts in a short period after Light's death. In canon DN there is a 5-year timeskip after a short period after L's death, with little information about it other than Light joining the NPA. There's no flashbacks/forwards or anything that really happens like, at all during this time either, the story just fast forwards to Mello and Near making their moves. L spends 23 days solving his final case, reminisces about Light a few times along the way, sometimes fondly, sometimes painfully, pays respects to him, then dies peacefully. Light spends 5 years-- 1,826 days uh.... Living. I guess? Except there's nothing of any note about it, by the looks of it. Not a single interesting enough thing- except a footnote about Light joining the NPA, which he was going to do anyway, and another about Kira's increased killings, which is to be expected -for the reader to know about. That's 79 times the length of the plot of LCtW, and you know what Light Yagami probably spent the majority of that time. Bored. L is described as "lost and unfocused" when he defeats Kira, as he is finally, definitively unrivaled. Light becomes the "God of the New World", and what then? He won but there's no challenge left. There's this sequence in LCtW where L rapidfire solves a bunch of cases from all over the world, yet he hardly seems to care about it at all, he just marks them done and then moves on like none of it meant a thing. Just. Yeah. orz these guys are Miserable do you get what I mean
I fucking hate them. And they're like this in every fucking universe (Don't get me Started on the jdrama). Thank you LCtW for ruining my life

I dunno, maybe everyone on here saying how much they hate men even in little funny Tumblr speak might be damaging for all the trans men trying to escape reality on the "we love gays" site.
Like I'll be scrolling and see so many m/m ships and in the same scroll see "imagine men, ew." "At least I don't like men."
I know it's hehe funny site, but maybe we could also love men and not cringe at their mere existence.
Trans men, cis men, and masc identifying I love you, I support you and I hope you are loved by those around you.

I find it fascinating to witness the straight audience of any media not being able to pick up what the makers of the movie/show puts down.
It’s like when people reacted to the “You wear fine things well” scene in Our Flag Means Death with “aw, they’re such good friends” whereas the queer audience went “omg, this is happening”. We all had access to the same scene, we’d all watched the build up to that scene but the straight audience wrongly read it as friends/straight whereas the queer audience had suspected they were building up to a romance but this was the confirmation. Even the creator of the show was baffled that people were surprised that Ed and Stede fell in love. Because he thought they had made it obvious.
And as I said, we, the queer audience picked up on it. And I feel like the same thing is happening with Ted Lasso. Do I know that Ted and Trent will get together? No, I am unfortunately not a writer on Ted Lasso. But you can’t deny that there are clues pointing to it. But the straight audience barely pick up the fact that Ted and Trent like each other, be that in a platonic way or romantic way. I’ve seen several reactions to the last episode of season 2 and ONE of them included the scene where Ted reacts to Trent not being in the press room. All of them severely cut down the scene in the parking lot. One of the scenes most of us Ted/Trent truthers point to as a huge piece of evidence for it going canon. The parallel of them meeting in an empty parking lot, just like Ted and his ex-wife and Roy and Keeley. But because Ted and Trent are both men it couldn’t possibly mean anything. And Ted has an ex-wife and a kid so he can’t possibly be into men, as if there is no such thing as being bisexual. “But I’m pretty sure Trent has a family, he has a kid right?” So? He could be divorced, we also have no idea if his daughter has another dad or a mum. And the same thing applies to him, it doesn’t mean he can’t be into men (take also into account all of James Lance’s interviews, and his choice of shirt in one of them, friend of Dorothy anyone? He's the captain of this ship, we're just along for the ride tbh.)
Then we have the wonderful “I’m so not homophobic, in fact, you are homophobic because you think Ted is gay just because he likes musicals and has ‘feminine’ traits” um no… it’s the fact that he kind of acts in a way that an ally wouldn't. Yeah, he called himself an ally in that one episode. But every single person who is now out as queer who at one point considered themselves an ally because "I’m not one of them but I sure think they're neat" raise a hand 🖐️ (been there, done that. Was very into queer things before I realised I myself am one of them). What it always comes down to is "it's pandering", "it's tokenism" (having the main character on the show be queer wouldn't be fucking tokenism), "not everything has to be gay", "why can't men just be friends, there is a severe lack of male friendships on tv". And like the last one makes me go??? There are a MILLION friendships between men on TV. There are even multiple friendships between men in Ted Lasso. Beard and Ted, Ted and Higgins, Ted and Roy, the himbos and so on. Having Ted and Trent become a couple wouldn't really change anything because there are still friendships between men. They also claim that Ted is needed as the "straight without toxic masculinity" representation. As if Beard isn't right there. The man who has no problem going to an immersive show about the menstrual cycle. Has no problem with shrieking when he's surprised and so on.
I also like that if we'd get Ted and Trent together, we'd get two middle aged queer dads. Which isn't that common. It's not even super common to see people realising they're queer late in life on TV, and yet it happens every day. Because let's face it, most queer men on TV kind of look like Colin, and I don't mean that as a bad thing. And I'm looking forward to his storyline. But it's also nice seeing middle aged or old people finding themselves and being allowed to be who they are (see Ed and Stede from OFMD). Also would enjoy seeing people lose their minds when they realise they've been fooled this entire time. It'll be like Black Sails all over again.
I do not have any doubts about the fact that, had Trent or Ted been a woman and they saw Trent give up his career because of Ted's influence, they sure as hell wouldn't protest people thinking they'd become a couple. But because it's two men it's just delusional for some reason (homophobia).
What I'm saying is, it's clear that the straight audience has a hard time picking up subtext and clues that the makers are planting. Because they've never had to do that. Because they are always clearly represented. They don't have to look for minor side characters and hope that they might be queer. Because the main character is straight and most of the supporting cast too. When you've grown up with a lack of representation or with representation that is meant to be subtext, you'll learn to pick up on it. And you do look at media differently. I just wish that the straight audience could listen to us for once, without getting defensive and dancing around the fact that they are uncomfortable relating to a character that turned out to be queer.
