Thrown - Chapter 10: An Excuse to Indulge

Summary: You use Thor and Loki to ease your guilt for shirking work in favor of baked goods. In exchange you fill Thor in on Loki's day at the market.

Masterlist

Thor had business to attend to the human town and he had again managed to convince Loki to accompany him. The tasks had been simple enough and didn't involve any extensive meetings with tedious humans. Everything was sorted in short order and the brothers now found themselves meandering through the streets, gradually working their way back home.

Loki spotted you walking in the distance, with Ash at your side, naturally. You seemed distracted, you didn't take notice of the gods. Loki waited a few moments for Thor to see you, but his brother seemed to be similarly oblivious.

"Your friend is here." Loki was looking in your direction and Thor finally spotted you. "Our friend." Thor corrected, and for a moment it seemed like he was going to simply leave it at that. He didn't call out to you or move in your direction. Just as it looked like you were about to turn the corner away from them he finally raised an arm to wave at you.

You caught the motion out the corner of your eye and turned to them with a bright smile. "Boys! What perfect timing!" You seemed more excited to see them than normal, quickly closing the distance and practically bouncing as you did so. "Are you busy right now?" Thor shook his head. "You've found us at our leisure. Is there something you need?" "Yes! I need you to come to the bakery with me." You grabbed hold of Thor's arm and began practically dragging him down the street. Loki followed. You looked back at the brothers as you walked. "I woke up this morning with a craving and held it off as long as I could. It's much easier to justify giving in if I'm sharing it with you two." Thor chuckled. "We are happy to be of service."

You looked to Loki. "It's that place I told you about." Thor looked to him as well. "Oh, you know of this?" Loki shrugged. "You know mortals, they'll prattle on about anything. I can't be bothered to recall it all." You rolled your eyes but your smile was fixed in place. Loki smirked.

You led them down the street and around the corner to a quaint little storefront. Through the large glass windows he could see cases and counters filled with a number of breads, cakes, pastries. There were a couple small tables with chairs outside the shop, which you gestured toward. "Wait here, I'll be right back." You walked inside as the brothers took seats.

Ash approached Thor with a wagging tail. Thor reached down to pet the dog and spoke to Loki. "I notice you aren't complaining about this excursion." Loki waved a hand. "Why waste the energy? It has never done any good." When Thor took his hands away from Ash, the dog immediately moved to Loki instead. Loki obliged. Thor noticed. "I see you've made friends?" Loki shrugged nonchalantly. "Better to have the wolf at your side than behind your back."

With a jingling of the bell over the shop door, you returned, a small white cardboard box in your hands. You sat down and placed a napkin in front of each of the gods, then took a pastry from the box and dealt one to each as well. It was a round bun with a spiral of cinnamon and sugar, there appeared to be sugar sprinkled on top as well. "Skillingsbolle." You said as explanation. "This bakery makes the best." You had drawn one out for yourself and took a bite, eyes closing with satisfaction. "This is delightful." Thor said around a mouthful of bun. Loki took a bite and found that it was, indeed, very good. "It is satisfactory." You looked at him with disbelief. "Satisfactory?" "It doesn't compare to the pastries we had on Asgard, but it is quite good for this realm." You and Thor exchanged an exasperated look.

You took another bite then looked up as if you just remembered something. "Oh, Loki, Hani was asking about you this weekend. She was hoping to see you again." Thor's eyebrows raised. "A woman was asking after you? It seems there's much you haven't told me." You giggled. Loki rolled his eyes. "She's a little girl from the market." This did not abate Thor's surprise. "A little girl from the market. It seems you're making friends all over." "Yes, she was very taken with Loki." You smiled, then turned to Thor. "Did he really not tell you about the market?" Thor shook his head. "I only know that he had gone for a walk that morning, accepted the offer to join you on a whim, and returned home that evening. He could think of nothing else of note to tell me." You smirked and sat back in your chair with your bun. "Well I can tell you that in addition to making friends with a little girl, he did a fantastic job at the booth; packing and unpacking the pottery, making change for me, wrapping up sold items. A real knack for customer service." Loki looked annoyed, Thor chuckled. Your smirk increased as you continued. "And you should have seen how angry he got when this guy implied my work wasn't worth its price." Loki sat up and interjected defensively. "He was very disrespectful." He regained control of himself and sat back again. "I simply didn't care for his tone. It was just as much an insult to me, as I was tending to the booth as well." Thor was holding back a grin. Your smile held something unfamiliar. "At any rate, I appreciated his company. I hope the whim strikes him again sometime."

You and Thor fell into your usual sort of conversation and continued for several minutes after everyone had finished their pastry. Loki looked at the white cardboard box on the table, there appeared to be something inside. He reached out and lightly lifted the lid, indeed there were additional skillingsboller in the box. You slapped the lid closed and pulled the box in toward you. Loki smirked. "Hiding something?" "Those are for later." You fastened the lid on the box. "You wouldn't be interested anyway, since they were merely satisfactory." Thor chuckled. You stood, tucking the box protectively under your arm. "Well, boys, I've indulged my craving. I need to go home and get some work done." Thor stood. "We'll walk with you, we're going that way as well."

The three of you made your way through the town, out onto the road leading home. Soon they were walking along the low stone wall, approaching your cottage. The horse and the goat were out grazing in the field. As they reached your porch you turned to bid the brothers farewell.

"Thank you for giving me an excuse to eat sweets." Thor laughed. "My lady, I can say that I will always be happy to oblige in such circumstances. Thank you for introducing us to this Midgardian dish." You reached up and hugged Thor, waved goodbye to Loki, and stepped inside.

Thor and Loki continued down the road. Loki pointed out to the field as they passed. "Did you know that goat doesn't belong to her?" Thor chuckled. "Yes, we've talked about it." "It serves her no purpose." Loki was still incredulous. "It just showed up one day and she took it upon herself to care for it." Thor smiled softly. "It does seem to be a habit of hers."

The following morning, a box of six skillingsbollers are delivered to him along with three choices of whole bean dark roast coffees. The accompany note reads 'Titanium —An Admirer'

He's glad no one is around to hear the soft moan he makes on biting into a skillingsbolle. Cinnamon wasn't a spice Asgard had and Loki is particularly fond of it. He's certain he knows where these gifts are coming from now. The dark roast coffee is a giveaway in itself and he doubts Stephen has the money to spare to lavish him for so many days.

"Titanium.. are these your armours, Stark?" he wonders. If he were more sentimental still, he might consider the metals used to surround the mechanic's heart, but that is a thought for another time, or never. Feelings? Pfft.

And I'm Norwegian, so at the bakery I usually go for norwegian pastry, like skolebolle or skillingsbolle (similar to cinnamon roll). For drinks I might get a cup of hot chocolate ☕

ooooh that sounds fancy as hell. honestly cinanamon rolls are so under-rated, they're SO GOOD. i'm surprised no one had said hot chocolate yet because a good hot chocolate is to die for (we don't get good hot chocolates often around here TT)

Hm.. How do I describe it-

A cinnamon roll also known as cinnamon bun, cinnamon swirl, cinnamon Danish and cinnamon snail, is a sweet roll commonly served in Northern Europe, mainly in Nordic countries, but also in Austria and Germany, and North America. In Sweden it is called kanelbulle, in Denmark it is known as kanelsnegl, in Norway it is known as kanelbolle, skillingsbolle or kanelsnurr, in Finland it is known as korvapuusti, in Iceland it is known as kanilsnúður, and in Estonia it is known as kaneelirull. In Austria and Germany, it is called Zimtschnecke.

So to put it simply. A cinnamon roll is a sweet baked dough filled with a cinnamon-sugar filling. Made with a rich dough leavened with yeast, their characteristic form is due to rolling a dough sheet containing sweetened cinnamon filling. 1. Common toppings for cinnamon rolls include cream cheese frosting or a sugar glaze.

I don't really have any, sure I find stuff annoying but I prefer to ignore it or incapsulate myself in my own world to "escape" the annoyance.

The dark, heights, Voldemort and getting locked in somewhere.

Still very afraid of heights, and getting locked into places is very panic inducing. Also, now I have replaced my fear of the dark with the fear of dying because of the unknown mysteries of a possible afterlife.

Yikes, ummm there are so many good ones. Maybe Summerland, that is a very good movie. july micro, week one: What is your muse's favorite snack that they would literally fight someone over?

while it’s not disallowed, snacking isn’t really something drüskelle are encouraged to partake in when most of their meals consist of hardtack, or are nutrient dense to get them through the extreme tasks & weather that they encounter during their travels so having A FAVORITE isn’t something Matthias ever gave much thought prior to meeting Nina & the rest of the crows. while he enjoys waffles - especially given that he associates them with Nina - they’re actually not what he would likely list as his favorite.

if he had to list his favorite, it would be skillingsboller, a cinnamon bun like pastry that reminds him of his life before the drüskelle & before he lost his family. he hasn’t had one in years, but he enjoys the smell of them. cinnamon will always be a scent trigger for him, reminding him of his mother & little sister specifically. this favorite takes on new meaning for him after spending time with the grisha, & letting go of a lot of his long-held anger, finally enabling him to enjoy them again & actually treasure the memories of his family instead of bottling up all of that rage as motivation towards a destructive end-goal.

he likely wouldn’t fight someone over them... but he might consider it heavily.

Hiiii! Canadian Bergenser back :)) Between Canada and Norway - it’s hard to compare. It’s two different societies with different behaviours, set in a similar natural environment! Yep, I moved to Canada to attend Uni and am soon going to move back to Europe! It’s so nice to hear someone loving Bergen, since many I’ve known always seem to complain - especially the weather. But for me, that’s what I love! A good day is a day with rain, skillingsboller and a hot cup of coffee (Espresso House!) 🤤

yes that’s such a good description- both very into outdoorsy/sporty stuff and beautiful nature but in general have veryyy different personalities lmao. and the bergen weather definitely took getting used to- while I love rain I gotta admit I wasn’t a huge fan of such a warm wet winter (it rained like 30/31 days in January last year lol) but I loved july when it rained 90% of the time and never got above 20C bc I am not a fan of hot weather. and do NOT get me started on skillingsboller oh man do I miss them </3
