How do I respond to the “preferred pronouns” situation?

Let me tell you:

I’m not part of the subculture that assigns sexist stereotypes to the words “she” and “he”.

But -

I will call a woman “he” if she wants, because she wants it out of suffering from sexism and trying to escape it.

But I will not call a man “she”, because he wants because he loves sexism and wants to enforce it.

Just like I would call a black person white if they request it as some extreme attempt to feel better after living surrounded by racist stereotypes and would become miserable if I didn’t call them white.

But I would not call a white person black if they request it because they love racist stereotypes and want to be seen as a black gangster.

I will call women whatever pronouns they want. But I will never support the removal of any women’s spaces, shelters, services, or sports. And I will make it clear that when I refer to a woman as “he” I know that she is female and is no different or more “masculine” than women are naturally.

I will call these women whatever they want, whether “he” or “they”, because I would guess that the vast majority of lesbians and women who like wearing pants and having short hair have joined that subculture as an attempt to escape from sexist stereotypes. And these are my people, or they were… lesbians and women who like wearing pants and having short hair. I’m hoping that eventually they will leave the sexist cult that assigns sexist stereotypes to the words “she” and “he”.

So today I decided it was a she/her day, and I went out looking very female-presenting to an amusement park near my house. I’ve been there like a thousand times and I have done all of the rides WAY too much, but I like falling and vertigo, so it’s still fun.

I went on one of the rides while my friends decided to go grab coffee for us, and I ended up seated next to this random guy my age. He said, “Hey sweetheart, you know this ride has at least ten drops, right?” I was VERY uncomfortable and was just like. “…yeah.” This idiot continued to smirk at me and say, “It’s alright, babe. You can hold my hand if you get scared.”

I didn’t have the energy to come up with a clap back, so I just sat there awkwardly while we started to go up towards the first drop. Turns out, I didn’t need one. The second we went down for the first drop, this man screamed the highest-pitched I scream I have heard in my entire life, and he did not stop for the entire ride. He screamed so many profanities during that ride that he had to be escorted out of the park, right after he sprinted off the coaster the second it stopped to go vomit in a trash can. As he was being asked to leave, I caught his eye and just smirked at him, then walked away with no further words. It felt fucking amazing. I hope he remembers me and doesn’t pull any sexist BS again.

There needs to be an Oracle movie

Barbara Gordon and her time as Batgirl. The subtle implications of misogyny (from criminals, emergency services, social media, etc.) and her struggles of being slightly outcast from the Bats (maybe not intentionally, but it's still felt). Despite that (and how hard the role is), she admits to feeling alive and powerful as Batgirl. She loves her ability to help Gotham, the city her dad tries so hard to shape up to be better.

Then the Joker shoots Barbara. He doesn't shoot Batgirl, doesn't even know it's Batgirl that's being injured, but he shoots Barbara because she's the commissioner's daughter. Her life changing injury isn't even about her.

There's the hopelessness, the grief, the sense of loss, and then Jason dies.

The Bats, try as they might to be there for her, are drowning in their own grief. They can't be there for her even if they wanted to.

She's wasting away with the realization that she's lost everything and her father is bending under the weight of supporting her and his job as commissioner.

Slowly, an idea comes to her. Slowly, when she starts looking out at Gotham's skyline and sees the clock tower, she begins to pull herself back together.

It's not an easy process, and she does return to depressive spirals and bed rotting, but she starts to have more decent days than bad. She's puts away her first criminal as Oracle. She becomes a feared force the Bats can turn to for help.

The end of the movie will hint at her starting Birds of Prey.

In fairness (unfortunate), Jonathan does technically agree with putting some space between Mina and the Dracula Attackula mission. The implied difference is that Jonathan ‘Sole Survivor of the Count’s Fuckery and Loves Mina More Than Life Itself’ Harker wants to keep her out of the fucker’s reach in the same way Mina retroactively wishes she could have kept Jonathan out of Dracula’s clutches. He wants to spare her what he personally suffered out of rightful worry, experience and love. So it would be regardless of his loved one’s gender.

On the other hand, Van Helsing and the (upper class Classic Victorian Gentlemen+) Suitor Squad are actively putting on their blinders regarding all evidence to the contrary of their benign-sexist assumptions when it comes to Mina as a person, her sex overriding the reality of her character. She’s the last precious maiden standing and needs protecting! And plenty of ignorance regarding further vampiric ickiness!

Because that worked out so well for Lucy.

There’s likely a not small amount of projection involved too, what with VH and company being still very raw after losing Lucy. Whatever more reasonable non-gender norm-enforcing reaction they might have had given more coping time is not in play—Mina is not only New Friend-Girl, but likely also a New Lucy/Damsel second chance.

I remember you saying once that you don't hate Adrien. Has that changed?

Yeah lol I've just regressed to hating him. Over all, when I was watching the show, I didn't feel super strongly about him, but I did like quite a few of his moments, and sometimes got annoyed because of how corny he was. I never loved him unlike the majority of the fandom, he was just kind of there to me. But now the mere existence of his character angers me. How he's underutilized, not well written, and never has to struggle unless its in regards to his upbringing (a plot device that only exists to make him important to the story) or when he's mad at Ladybug (and most of the time unfairly so) nor has to learn any lesson while Marinette always unproportionately has to (though she never truly gets punished either for her obsessive stalking, which is a whole other mess). Do I need to mention how entitled he acts to Ladybug's feelings? He never actually apologises in Frozer for that. Nor does he in Glaciator.

It's not Adrien's fault that he's like this, I believe he can be a good character, it's the writers being absolutely ass at their job and being incredibly sexist. Adrien isn't the victim of the sexism (more so a causality because it favours the girls), but its directed at every female character and ESPECIALLY Marinette despite the favouritism, and he often gets off scot-free of any dickish behaviour, because he is the boy. I have a problem with the entire writing of the show, but Adrien gets my scorn the most because he is the other lead that isn't treated as horribly as the other, never being reprimanded for it- yes, even if he isn't given as much spotlight as Marinette and he is seen as lesser. But let's be real; whenever he is given spotlight, 8 times out 10 he's going to be written to be a dick.

Of course endometriosis For Men™, ME/CFS For Men™, migraines For Men™, post-concussive syndrome For Men™, Raynaud's phenomenon For Men™, etc., are all well-funded fields of research and totally understood. Medical research cares only about the gender of an individual patient, not the association of a condition with people of a certain gender. Patriarchal devaluation of women's health, women's illnesses being treated as fundamentally hysteric, and (peri)cissexist reductions of any individual to the reproductive system(s) they were born with clearly only affect people whose gender is woman, nobody else.
