Eclipse

Author: Stephanie Meyer

Description: As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob - knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Review: My expectations of Eclipse upon deciding to read it were low. However, I did not foresee it being this bad.

There’s just so much my patience can take when characters sour and grow petulant, and in Eclipse they all became insufferable. Not constantly, of course. Some characters much more than others, and some only in periods of time. Nonetheless, there was not a single character that stayed consistently likeable, especially the main trio.

In addition to this, Meyer’s lexicon is truly questionable. Such as using words as coercion and forcing in moments were the words were uncalled for. And then later not using the appropriate words for problematic situations and/or conversations. Eclipse is built on this, every brick of its foundation representing the questionable beliefs and morals of its characters.

Any few salvageable parts of Eclipse were decimated by the mountain of terrible writing and disgusting tries of concealing SA and grooming behind the thinly veiled excuse of its book genre. For instance, the fact that Jacob is not the first werewolf to imprint on a baby. Or the fact that Meyer’s bends the significance of the age of characters at her will to fit the narrative.

Besides this, the plot is severely lacking. There’s barley any pay-off for the already poor amount of build up, and in the end the insufferable love triangle overshadows the rest. There were just too many unforgivable acts occurring, too many moments where I screamed silently to cope with the absurd insanity, to see any redeeming qualities.

Eclipse reads like a desperate attempt to “spice things up” and instead managed to make the whole book series much, much worse.

Will never not be weird to me that the newborn fight has like . . . no fallout in the text.

I get why. Breaking Dawn is the re-write of Forever Dawn, which was written before Eclipse (and New Moon) existed. So because there was no newborn fight in Forever Dawn, it's not really a factor at all in Breaking Dawn. I also get that our narrator wasn't there at the fight so to her it's not like a super big deal; for her, Edward and Seth's fight with Riley and Victoria was the traumatic thing.

But like, dude. The supporting characters were literally fighting to the death. To the death! They could have died! This newborn army was trying to KILL them!

They killed sentient creatures! Sure they were vampires bent on killing them and it was self-defense. But those vampires were victims themselves; mere months ago they had been teenagers with lives until they got roped into Victoria's revenge scheme. This is tragic. It's one thing to kill Laurent or James who are centuries old and making their own choices. But the Seattle newborns? They were just kids, kids who were used and lied to. And they KNOW they're kids because the definition of a newborn is being a vampire for less than a year. They were about the same ages as the shapeshifters themselves. Diego was 17. Raoul was 16. Riley was only 18. Hell, even as vampires they spent their non-murdering time playing video games and reading.

I think the only time it comes up in Breaking Dawn at all is when Jacob is talking about the Cullens' abilities as fighters and who should take out whom if it comes to a fight. Jacob's not haunted by the fight. None of the shapeshifters seem to be at all. Even Jacob's horrific injury is just like . . . whatever. He's healed. It's fine. No one is upset or traumatized by that. No one is wondering what they would have done if there hadn't been a vampire doctor able to break and reset the bones.

None of the Cullens are bothered by the fight, either. It's just full-on into wedding mode.

This didn't stir up some stuff for Jasper? Really?

And the whole Bree thing! Esme and Carlisle were ready to adopt this girl! And then she's just never mentioned again. That doesn't haunt them?? They aren't horrified about what happened to that poor kid?

I understand, it would be a buzzkill for Bella and Edward's wedding and honeymoon for these characters to actually have to deal with any aftermath. The supporting characters just gotta do their supporting stuff. I get it. I do. But you set up this big battle and then it's just like "well! glad that's over!" Why even bother writing it if it doesn't matter?

One thing I never understood in the twilight movies is that they left out the bond between Seth and Edward. It was Edwards idea to invite Seth Sue Billy and Leah to the wedding but Leah didn’t want to go . The rest of the Cullens love Seth and see him as a little brother even rose doesn’t mind him I’ll will never understand why they left out they’re bond in the movies. Seth is also the only wolf who’ll call the Cullens by their actual names.

Also Edward was extremely controlling and manipulating towards bella right when the two of them get engaged he destroys her truck so he can give her a really expensive car that isn’t even out to the US yet.

Charlie knows that Bella had changed and when he met her daughter he looks at her and Bella he knows deep down that this is her biological daughter and that he just never questioned it because it wasn’t his business.

Embry and Angela are imprints they end up having twins.

Bree tanner was supposed to be Seth’s imprint you can’t tell me I’m wrong why would an side character be important enough to have her own book if the voltori let her live with the Cullens she would have met Seth.

Why didn’t the Cullens wear eye contacts when it clear they wear wigs here’s why I say they wear wigs they are supposed to be dead that means they’re hair wouldn’t be growing so they wear wigs to show how they’re hair changes over time so why couldn’t they use contacts the pale skin is easily explained by living in forks where it’s constantly under clouds and raining where there is no sunshine also.
