Cats as Earthquake Predictors
Every time there's an earthquake here in California, right after "Did you feel it?", people ask "Did your pets act crazy just before the quake?"
My cats tend to sleep through the moments before earthquakes and sometimes through the actual quake. If you expect them to monitor seismic rumblings in the Earth, they do a terrible job of it. They do what they normally do: sleep like the meatloafs that they are.
There's the story of two earthquakes in China. Before the first one, people saw animals acting crazy. So they evacuated their homes. When the ground did indeed shake, many thousands were saved.
In the second case, the animals went about their business. Then the quake hit. Thousands died.
I think the first story might well be urban legend. The only time when I saw a rumbler affect animal behavior was _after_ the Quake of '89 when all the cats in our apartment complex went into hiding. We did not see them for a few days.
The USGS page that asks people if they felt it does not include a question about animal behavior. The experts don't put much stock in the stories. Neither do I.

33 - Intrusion
Do you realise what you've done to me? Are you in ANY way aware of the chaos you've caused?!
Who gave you the right to barge into my kingdom, upend my entire world, and lay siege to the castle of my soul? You, who brought blinding, lawless light into the darkness of my order? You, who incited my... my traitorous heart to mutiny against my cautious nature?
I was FINE before you showed up! I KNEW my place! I was CONTENT with my lot! To be a hero, to SAVE the world... that was all I lived for, and I was happy with that!
And then you... you... you...!!
Without saying a single word, you brought me to rack and ruin. The life I had created for myself couldn't possibly contain a creature so magnificent... and I saw how small and sad my ambitions had truly been.
Prophecy? Prophecy?! What warmth, what comfort could I draw from such cold abstractions? What destiny, however grand, could hope to stand up against the raging flames of emotion? For you burn me up from the inside out, my blood running volcanic through my veins! You have smitten me with a deathly fever, an affliction for which you are both the cause and the cure.
And now everything I see is suffused with softest light, as silken as the petals of a blooming rose, flush pink and heavy with dew. The sirens of longing run riot through my head, calling your name in ceaseless chorus, and all thoughts of propriety are drowned, submerged beneath the relentless tides of adoration.
This - this! - is what you have so thoughtlessly wrought upon me. And should I thank you, or curse your radiant visage? For you have forcibly wrenched open the doors to my heart, foisting upon me the burden of love which I am now condemned to bear forevermore, in the face of your cruel and beautiful indifference.

Moodboard Monday: Seismic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A gunslinger (asshole), a CEO (asshole) and a lawyer (asshole, but classy) walk into a bar? Here's hoping the owner's insurance can cover it.
For this week's MS: Moodboard Monday by @moon-and-seraph, I put together a little something for the three main characters of chapter 4 of my WIP Seismic. And even though the evening described in the chapter wasn't quite like the outing described above, these three are definitely going out for drinks together in the near future.
Nisha grins at her across the doorstep. Meg takes a step forward and kisses her square on the mouth. After the initial shock, it’s not even that bad of a kiss. A little too much teeth, but she expected that much. The purple lipstick tastes like plum with a touch of jet fuel. She steps back and gives Nisha her sweetest smile. “Hope that was okay, Nish. Just wanted to give you a proper thank-you for showing Jack a good time, you know?” It only lasts three seconds, five tops. But it is official and confirmed: she has just rendered Sheriff Nisha Kadam, however briefly, speechless. “Hey, do that again,” Jack calls from behind her. “I didn’t get my ECHO out in time.” “You snooze, you lose, cowboy.” Nisha laughs at him over Meg’s shoulder. “So… Meg, right? Like I said, I don’t often go riding this side of the tracks, but tell you what, once you get bored of Mr. Hyperion back there, why don’t you swing by Lynchwood? May well be a bottle of whiskey with your name on it.” “Thanks, Sheriff.” Meg shoots her a wink. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

let’s lay it all out: the episode start’s with the GOODMAN & ASSOCIATES sign being hoisted atop the building. then we learn that hhm is changing it’s name, basically killing any official legacy of the mcgill name. then kim leaves, and jimmy throws himself into saul goodman. this is the episode jimmy finally left everything “mcgill” behind, but they didn’t just take it away in a single moment. kim leaving was the last of many straws that broke the camel’s back. they spent they whole episode slowly building up to it, because they’ve spent the whole series slowly building up to it.

So a couple weeks ago, I realized that three out of five lightbulbs in my stand lamp were out. Kinda weird that three went out at one time, but it does explain why I was having trouble seeing in this room.
So I finally get around to taking a look at what kind of bulbs they are so I can get new ones. As per usual, I forgot 'righty tighty lefty loosey' and start turning the bulb.
It comes on. Upon further investigation, the same thing happened with the other two 'dead' bulbs.
So I don't have to replace lightbulbs. But now I want to know... what caused this?
