How about that not-so-subtle scene of the smallfolk rejecting Rhaenyra as queen though. A bit on the nose, but decent foreshadowing for what’s to come.

Gerry regards Lukas with narrowed eyes.  He has heard enough stories about the man to take any boat talk as a potential threat.  And unlike most people, he is aware of at least most of his own markings—the Eye, the End, the Desolation, and yes, the Lonely.  He has done well to only teeter on the brink of all of them and not allow himself to actually fall in, holding onto a hope and love for other people that stops him from sinking, the only way to truly combat any Fear that crops up.  People are frustrating, especially in their ignorance, but damn if he doesn’t love them, anyway.
He thinks back to the woman in Italy, the Lonely-marked one, and wonders where she is, if she’s okay.  Remembering the advice he gave her, her personalized strategy for combating the Lonely, he smiles bitterly and answers, “Call my mom.”  Lukas doesn’t have the Eye, so he doesn’t get all of the gory details about Mary, doesn’t know how badly Gerry would not want to do that, even if he still could.  He wonders if Lukas even knows that she’s dead, with all the time he spent out at sea.  Even if her death was in all the papers for weeks, being one of the most brutal that the region had seen in a minute, the other could have been out on his boat all that time and missed it completely.  Who knows?
“Look, I don’t know what you want,” he says, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his long coat, “but I’ve got stuff going on around here.”  And then he emphasizes, “People around here.”  Of course, he knows that the new Archivist means much more to him than the other way around, just like the old Archivist, but he isn’t about to bring those feelings up with Lukas of all people.  “I can’t afford to take a long trip out to sea, so if it’s a crewmate you’re after, you better get to looking elsewhere.”

Two months following her and Aemonds betrothal, grief struck Kings Landing.
First was the death of the Strongs, ser Harwin and lord Lynol. Then came the news of her Aunt Leana’s death.
They had travelled to Driftmark for Leana’s funeral, a morbid affair she did not wish to attend, especially after receiving all those nasty looks from her Veleryon kin. Her father had been lost to the world of grief, the death of his sister taking over, and his days spent wallowing in the sea. Her mother was better, though isolated. Focusing all her attention on the new babe.
She, as always, stood beside Aemond, few things had changed between them since their courtship began, Aemonds possessive nature towards her had come out tenfold. Though the general rules of courtship dictated they remain an ‘appropriate distance’ from one another and must always remain accompanied (a fact her septa had constantly reminded her), they instead broke every rule, acting as if they were already wed, they even shared a bed every night (which Aemond insisted had to remain secret), Aemond claiming it was then ‘practising for married life’. Though Aemma was not too sure what the fuss was about. People had begun to treat her like a grown woman, even her mother, acting as if she were not a child who had yet to reach her tenth name day.
She had decided grown-up life seemed incredibly dull, even her lessons changed, now focusing on new responsibilities, such as sewing and running a household.
She hated the whole thing, hated that her lessons with Aemond were now few and far between.
Her brothers had too changed since her betrothal, namely Jace. Though it was more recent, (mainly due to the strong departure and death, why that seemed to greatly affect Jace’s behaviour she was not sure) He had insisted on being her and Aemonds chaperone, though they usually managed to escape him, he would follow them around, breaking them apart whenever they did something ‘improper’, she had begun to refer to him as septa Jace, though not out loud, she even began to think allowing her septa to chaperone them may be better than his company.
Aemond himself didn’t seem to care, he had never liked Jace and seemed to act up more in his presence, becoming more possessive of her, even manhandling her (not that she knew what that was). If she was anyone else perhaps, she would have been worried over his possessive nature, But she did not, she loved it. In truth, there was nothing wrong with it as far as she was aware.
Her mother had been the same. So protective and controlling of her life that it felt right.
With Aemond though it never felt like he was controlling her, she felt it was normal, he would protect her from the mean words and looks from others (not that she knew they were even happening), and he would even take her out of septa lessons were she was being taught ‘nonsense’, an action both her mother and Aemond partook in.
Aemond was a constant presence that she could rely on, he was the one by her side as she heard the news of each of the deaths. He had instantly sought her out after the news of Ser Harwin, she may not have been as close as Jace and Luke were to him, but he had always been there with a kind smile and open arms for her. As for her aunt, she had never met Laena, but her father always told her stories of her, she had wanted to, and now she never would.
Aemond gripped her hand tightly as she sniffed her tears.
“We have nothing in common!” Aegon whined next to them.
She had decided to stand with Aemond and Helena, having had enough of the stares she received from the Velaryons as she stood beside her mothers and brothers. Heleana was on one side, crotched in the dirt playing with some new insect she had discovered, and on the other stood Aegon, already deep in his cups.
“she’s our sister” Aemond reminded, following their betrothal her grandfather saw fit to preserve the Valyrian bloodline once more and betrothed Heleana and Aegon.
“You marry her then!”
“He is to marry me, uncle” Aemma replied, naively, moving to crotch near Heleana “Perhaps he should have betrothed Heleana and Jacaerys, Helena would be a good queen!”
Aemond and Aegon shared a look.
“She is to be your wife, brother, show her some respect”  he replied, choosing to ignore her words. He moved to pull Aemma back up from the ground “You’ll muddy your dress”.
“Heleana already has, what does it matter if I do!” she replied, kneeling, and looking at Helena’s newest bug, “what is that?” she asked, but instead of an answer, she was met with Heleana muttering about a hand and spools of black and green.
“Aemma” she heard her mother call her, pulling her away from the ground and Aemond.
“Mother? What is it?” she asked,
“it is time to bed sweet girl,” her mother spoke, caressing her face.
“But it’s early!” she whined, Aemond would not wish to go to bed yet, she was sure to not find any sleep.
“just go.” Her mother sighed.
Aemma was woken to the sounds of shouts coming from the great hall. The whole family had gathered in the dead of night, the hall was silent when she reached it, her mother comforting her brothers, receiving Alicent’s disapproving stare.
The Hall was split in two, the whole of Driftmark in attendance. On one side stood her mother, brothers, cousins and Veleryon grandparents, on the other her grandsire, Alicent, Heleana and Aegon. Someone was sitting in a chair facing away from them all, maesters surrounding them.
“Muña?” she questioned confused as to what was going on “What happened? Where’s Aemond?”
“Oh, my sweet girl” her mother ran, pulling her to her and her brothers.
“What happened? Where’s Ae-“She was cut off, a sob leaving her mouth as his head popped around the chair. His eye gashed out and his face was swollen.
“Aemond!” she gasped, moving from her mother’s grip, “what happened?” she cried, reaching for his face.
He hissed, pulling back, “They attacked me!” he shouted pointing to her brothers and cousins.
“What! Why?” she sobbed, burying her face in his chest, “why? Why would they do that to you?”
“He attacked Baela” she heard Jace shout back.
“He broke Luke’s nose!”
“He stole my mother’s dragon!”
“ENOUGH!” her grandsire demanded; his anger apparent.
“He was going to kill Jace!”
“I didn’t do anything!” Aemond insisted, pulling Aemma’s face closer into his chest, finding solace in her presence.
“ENOUGH!” her grandsire demanded once again.
“It should be my son telling the tale” Alicent insisted, moving her hand to rub Aemma’s back.
Her grandsire hit his cane to the floor, demanding silence, “Aemond, I will have the truth of what happened, now!”
“What else is there to hear? Your son has been maimed…Her son is responsible”.
“It was a regrettable accident” her mother spoke.
“How was taking his eye an accident?” Aemma questioned, moving her head back to look at her mother, “what could he have possibly done to deserve his eye being taken?” she questioned, glaring at Luke as he shrunk back behind their mother.
Alicent nodded her head, agreeing with Aemma, “The prince Lucerys brought a blade to an ambush. He meant to kill my son!” she insisted, causing Aemma to gasp and continue her teary glare at her brothers.
“It was my sons who were attacked and forced to defend themselves… Vile insults were levied against them” her mother declared.
“What insults?”
Her mother hesitated “The legitimacy of my…son’s birth was put loudly to the question”.
“What?”
Speaking up, Luke said “he called us bastards!” sending her a pleading gaze, trying to prove his innocence, but Aemma only saw his guilt, he took her Aemonds eye, and whatever Aemond did she doubted had cause for his eye to be taken.
Looking at Aemond, she whispered “What’s a bastard?” with confusion written on her face, Aemond only shook his head, guilt shimmering in his eye.
“My sons are in line to inherit the iron throne, your grace. This is the highest of treasons…. Prince Aemond must be Sharpley questioned so we might learn where he heard such slanders”.
“He just lost his eye, and you want to… to interrogate him, over an…” Aemma lead off, confusion clear in her tone, but Alicent continued for her.
“Over and insult? My son has lost an eye!”
Her grandsire moved towards Aemond, Aemma was ushered off Aemonds lap, moving to stand near Heleana. “You tell me, boy, where did you hear this lie?” her grandsire demanded.
Alicent was quick to respond, coming to Aemonds defence, (perhaps even her own) “This insult was training yard bluster, it was nothing”. But her grandsire paid no attention to her, only moving to question Aemond again.
where is Ser Laenor, I wonder? The children’s father? Perhaps he might have something to say on the matter.”
“Yes, where is Ser Laenor?”
“he’s at the beach” Aemma interrupted, “ he has not left the sea since we arrived,” she looked around the room, her move gaining some sense of confidence from Aemma’s interruption.
“yes, he nor I could find sleep, we took a walk on the beach, where Laenor chose to remain” Her mother nodded, a smug smile gracing her face as Alicent kissed her teeth.
Her grandsire spoke, stopping Alicent from changing the subject once again “Aemond, look at me. Your king demands an answer. Who spoke these lies to you?”
Aemond shifted his gaze to his mother, “It was Aegon” he answered, moving his gaze to his brother.
“Me?” Aegon asked confused, she had never heard him say it before, then again until today, she had never heard the word at all. And seeing how uncomfortable the word made everyone, it made sense for Aegon, he seemed to thrive on the discomfort of others.
“And you, boy? Where did you hear such calumnies?” her grandsire spat “Aegon! Tell me the truth of it!”
“We know, father. Everyone knows. Just look at them” Aegon sighed, eyes turning to her brothers, Aemma herself was pulled back to Aemond, who hid her from everyone’s gaze.
“This interminable infighting must cease! All of you! We are family! Now make your apologies and show goodwill to one another. Your father, your grandsire, your king demands it.” Her grandsire demanded.
“That is insufficient. Aemond has been damaged, permanently, ‘Good will’ cannot make Aemond whole” Alicent demanded.
“I know Alicent, but I cannot restore an eye,“ a deep sigh left her grandsire.
“No, because it’s been taken!”
“What would you have me do?”
“There is a debt to be paid. I shall have one of her son’s eyes in return” Alicent declared, gasps filling the hall.
“My dear wife-”
Her eyes watered, her son, their sons’ eye had been taken and he does not seem to care “he is your son, Viserys. Your blood”
“Do not allow your temper to guide your judgment”
“If the king will not seek justice, the queen will. Ser Criston… Bring me the eye of Lucerys Velaryon.” Alicent ordered.
Luke let out a nervous shout for his mother, moving to hide behind her.
“he can choose which eye to keep, a privilege he did not grant my son” Alicent spoke, Ser Criston stared down at her, unsure of what to do.
Turing to Ser Cole, her grandsire demanded “You will do no such thing… Stay your hand”.
“No, you are sworn to me!” she shouted at Ser Criston, as he stood unsurely “As your protector, my queen.”
“This matter is finished, do you understand?” her grandsire spoke to Alicent, moving away before declaring “And let it be known, anyone whose tongue dares to question the birth of Princess Rhaenyra’s children should have it removed!”
“Thank you, Father” her mother spoke, relief clear in her tone. But Alicent was enraged and moved towards grabbing the dagger from her grandsire and moved to charge at her mother and Luke.
Shouts filled the hall, trying to get Alicent to stop, but she continued.
“you’ve gone too far” her mother spoke, grabbing Alicent’s arm, preventing the dagger from diving into Luke’s eye.
“i? What have I done but what expected of me? Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, and the law. While you flout all to do as you, please” Alicent spat in reply. “Where is duty? Where is sacrifice? And now you take my son's eye, and to that event, you feel entitled”.
“Exhausting, wasn’t it? Hiding beneath the cloak of your own righteousness” her mother replied, seeing Alicent face drop and her grip on the blade began to loosen. “But now they see you as you truly are,” she said lowly, the dagger slipped from Alicent’s hand, down her mother’s arm, blood dripping to the ground.
“This proceeding is at an end”
Aemma had not left Aemonds side since that night. She took over from the maesters, changing Aemonds bandage, and applying the ointment. She refused to let others near him, to leave him. Even when her mother tried to carry her out of the room herself, she would scream and protest. She only left once her mother came and told them they were leaving.
“I will not” she shook her head, ripped her arm from her mothers “I will not leave him, you can not make me!” she screamed.
“dōna riña” her mother begged, “please, my sweet girl, for me and your brothers they miss you, you will see in in a few years when you are to wed.” her mother sneered the last part, the maids had whispered about how her mother had pleaded with her grandsire to end the engagement, but only a fool would think she herself would let anyone but Aemond be her husband.
“I do not care! Alicent has said I can stay in Kings Landing, in my home, Mother please!” she begged “I cannot leave my Aemond, especially after what they did, stay Muña, please”.
“I cannot, sweet girl, it is for the best” her mother continued.
“For whom? For you? Mayhaps, but for me it will be nothing but pure torture, I will scream if you make me go, I will bring you nothing but hell if you take me there, take me away from MY AEMOND!” She shouted, streams streaming down her face.
She noticed the man then, he had silver hair like her mother’s family, she remembered who he was then, Aemond had mentioned him, their uncle Daemon, rider of Caraxes. He stood against the wall, his lip quirked and laughter leaving his lips, “leave her, let the Hightower cunts have her” he spoke up.
“Do not-“ her mother began, a sigh leaving her lips. She looked at Aemma, defeat filling her features, “Please, sweet girl, please”
“I won’t, I can’t leave him, Muña”.
Her mother sighed “ok, but if you ever, and I mean if for a second, a minute second, wish to come to Dragonstone, come. You are my daughter, my dōna riña, and you always will be my favourite girl” tears filled her mother’s eyes.
“of course, Muña, I love you” she whispered the last part, looking down “I’m sorry, I’ll miss you”.
“I love you too, I’ll miss you, sweet girl, I’ll visit whenever you ask” her mother promised.
Though that would soon become a lie, as Aemma would not see her mother for years to come.

JON SNOW AND ICE DRAGON
According to the World of Ice & Fire, Ice dragons exist in the Shivering Sea and these dragons are many times larger the Valyrian ones we are more familiar with thanks to House Targaryen.
Westerosi has named one constellation "Ice Dragon" and usually when that word comes up within the text refers to the said constellation. I said usually, because there is a single pov character who refers to Ice Dragons even aside from the constellation that's named after them. And since you probably read the title of this meta you know that I'm talking about our boy, Snow.
It's interesting that Jon informs us that Old Nan ( bless that woman)used to tell him stories about these creatures when he was younger. Normally, Old Nan told stories to all Starklings so we could go ahead and assume that the other Stark kids ( and especially those who where around Jon the most aka Robb, Arya and Bran) have also heard those tales. And yet, none of these kids mentions Ice Dragons - outside from the same named constellation - in their pov. It's like Martin only wanted Jon to talk about these creatures at all.
The first time he mentions an Ice Dragon is when during the Battle at the Wall compares a tunnel with the gullet of an ice dragon:
The door swag open. Pyp led them in, followed by Clydas and the lantern. It was all Jon could do to keep up with Maester Aemon. The Ice pressed close around them, and he could feel the cold seeping into his bones. It felt like walking down the gullet of an ice dragon[...]
ASOS, JON VIII
The second time, he compares the wind with the breath of an ice dragon while also remembering that Old Nan told him stories about it:
The wind was gusting, cold as the breath of the ice dragon in the tales Old Nan had told when Jon was a boy.
ADWD, JON II
Another comparison between the tunnels and the belly of the ice dragon:
The road beneath the Wall was as cold and dark as the belly of an ice dragon and as twisty as a serpent
ADWD, JON VIII
And another one comparing the wind with the breath of the ice dragon( Jon you are getting repetitive in your own mind xD):
The snowfall was light today, a thin scattering of flakes dancing in the air, but the wind was blooming for the east along the Wall, cold as the breath of the ice dragon in the tales Old Nan used to tell
ADWD, JON X
Now, I don't expect an Ice Dragon to come from the Shivering Sea to aid Jon in the last two books ( although as a fantasy fan who adores dragons I can't say I dislike this crack theory) but I do believe there is a reason only Jon mentions these creatures.
Ice Dragon is an antithesis if you think about it. Dragons usually are associated with the fire they breath and here we have a description of those who are made of ice. Creatures who should be of fire are actually of ice. Similarly to them, Jon Snow, who is secretly a member of House Targaryen ( associated with both dragons and fire), was raised in the North and became a Commander of an Order which is located at the northest part of Westeros Even his surname, Snow, reminds us of the cold! He should be by the virtue of being a Targaryen more of fire but due to the circumstances of his life he's closer to the ice.
It's like he's the Ice Dragon that recites at the Wall.

Battle Over Shipbreaker Bay
Dispatched by his mother to Storm's End to enlist Lord Borros's support, [Prince Lucerys] arrived to find Prince Aemond Targaryen there before him. Aemond was older, stronger and crueler than Lucerys - and he hated Lucerys with a passion, for it was Lucerys who had cost him his eye nine years earlier. Lord Borros denied Aemond his desire for revenge inside his hall - but stated that he had no care whatever for what happened without. So Prince Aemond, upon Vhagar, chased down the fleeing Lucerys and his young dragon Arrax. The prince and his dragon - hampered by the storm raging outside the castle walls - both died within sight of Storm's End, plummeting into the sea.

new chapter of Sea Glass Promise (our jonmartin selkie au) is up!! i wanted to post the pictures here, im happy with how they turned out - martin's face in the last one is so cute and babby jon is even cuter <3
[Start ID: Five images of Jon and Martin from The Magnus Archives based off scenes from a selkie AU. Jon is a thin Persian man with short dark curly hair and a beard, both streaked with gray. He wears square framed glasses and has dark eyes. Martin is a fat mixed Korean/Polish man with short dark wavy hair and a beauty mark under his lip. He wears browline glasses in some pictures and has dark eyes, he also wears a blue sea glass necklace.
1st image: Jon is holding a book titled A Guest For Mr. Spider and looking at Martin with a horrified expression. He is wearing a white button up shirt rolled past his elbows. The book has a simplified black spider hanging upside down with a friendly fanged smile and is tipping a red bowler hat in greeting. Martin is holding a hand to his mouth and snickering at him in the right corner. the background is simple book shelves.
2nd image: Martin is flexing his right arm, looking down at his bicep with a proud smirk, his other hand is rolling up the sleeve of his white t-shirt. A couple diamond stars are in front of his eyes and there are three lines marking where he is flexing. Jon looks on with wide eyes and a blush, there is a white circle around his head to indicate he is thinking deeply about the sight. He is wearing a simple dark t-shirt that looks too big for him. The background is a dark window to the left with pattering rain outside, with otherwise light grey walls.
3rd image: Martin is dressed in a jean jacket and a striped shirt. He is smiling at a photo in his hand along with Jon's grandmother, Mrs. Sims, who is pointing at the photo. She is a thin, elderly Persian woman with rectangular glasses, dark eyes, and grey eyebrows. She is wearing a hijab patterned with flowers and a simple dark dress, as well as wearing dark lipstick. Jon is in the background thumping his head against a kitchen cabinet, his arms slack in front of him. He is wearing a dark v-neck shirt with sleeves rolled past his elbows and jeans with a belt. He looks very put off by the two looking at the photo. The background is a kitchen with a fridge on the left, a curtained window in the middle, and cabinets and countertop spanning the middle and right.
4th image: A close up of the photo from the previous image. It is of Jon as a child (around 6 years old), wearing oval shaped glasses and his hair is just past his shoulders. He is glaring up from a book he is reading while sitting in bed. The book is untitled but has a silhouette of a mouse on a broomstick on the cover, presumed to be some fantasy novel for children. He is wearing a plaid button up pajama shirt with matching pants. There is a plate of Jammie Dodgers (crimped cookies with a heart shaped hole for red jam in the middle) by his side and a teddy bear and lamp on his other side. A blanket is covering his feet and he is resting against a pillow. Martin's thumb is pressed into the corner to hold it.
5th image: Jon and Martin at sat across from each other at a circular table that is in front of a large window at a dessert cafe. Jon is wearing a plaid flannel with a dark shirt underneath, and is looking at Martin with shock, he is holding out a cup of rum raisin ice cream towards him. Martin is making a disgusted face and sticking his tongue out, he is holding a tiny spoon in his right hand and making a fist with his left. By his right hand, he has a cup of green tea ice cream. Outside the large window, there is a fuzzy outline of street lamps and a walkway railing. There appears to be scribbled writing on the window that is intended to represent the cafe's name. End ID.]

“Daenerys is a queen. Only a king can answer this message.”
“A king,” Sansa echoes, finally meeting his eyes. “Or a princess.”
.
In Westeros: war.
To the east, the Targaryen queen has landed on the shores of Dragonstone, prepared to take back the throne stolen from her family. To the south, the lions of Lannister bathe in the blood and copious spoils of their war—unchallenged, undefeated. To the far north, beyond the Wall, looms an unimaginable nightmare led by a god of death, a demon who will bring eternal winter to the realm by means of his army of walking corpses. And in the middle lies the shattered and broken North with its newly-crowned king, a king given a choice between a dragon and a lioness.
The only problem? Sansa thinks that negotiations aren't exactly her brother's specialty anymore and he is surely going to get them all killed.
Or: Sansa goes to Dragonstone to meet Daenerys instead of Jon.

OPERATION ICEBERG: THE TIER LIST
Tumblr media
THEORY:
Lemongate
TIER:
People's Choice! I swear to god, if you guys screw this up...
Under Consideration: These theories haven't garnered strong or extensive evidence, but they're worthy of discussion.
vs.
50/50: These theories are complete toss-ups.
vs.
Low Probability: While not impossible, these theories are unlikely based on the current evidence.
vs.
Long Shot: These theories are largely speculative, based more on wishful thinking or obscure hints than on solid evidence.
vs.
Debunked: These theories have been directly contradicted by the text, George R. R. Martin, or other authoritative sources.
[Tier list overview]
EVIDENCE:
What is Lemongate?
That was when they lived in Braavos, in the big house with the red door. Dany had her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. - Daenerys I, AGOT
The theory argues that lemons can't grow in Braavos, therefore something about Daenerys' childhood has yet to be revealed.
What could it be?
It depends on who you ask. The problem with this theory is that it serves as the foundation for many other theories, making it extremely difficult to cover.
The possibility that Daenerys never actually lived in Braavos has led to various speculations, including but not limited to the following:
The big house with the red door was in Dorne.
Daenerys Targaryen isn't really Daenerys Targaryen, and has false memories of her childhood with Viserys Targaryen.
Daenerys is the daughter of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.
Daenerys is the daughter of Ned Stark and Ashara Dayne.
And that's just scratching the surface.
For the sake of my sanity, we won't delve into all that nonsense. Instead, we'll focus solely on the question of whether lemons can grow in Braavos and, if not, what the hell is going on.
Okay, do lemons grow in Braavos?
Maybe? Daenerys seems to think so.
That was when they lived in Braavos, in the big house with the red door. Dany had her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. - Daenerys I, AGOT
But there's some issues.
For starters, trees don't really grow in Braavos.
Beyond the harbor she glimpsed streets of grey stone houses, built so close they leaned one upon the other. To Arya's eyes they were queer-looking, four and five stories tall and very skinny, with sharp-peaked tile roofs like pointed hats. She saw no thatch, and only a few timbered houses of the sort she knew in Westeros. They have no trees, she realized. Braavos is all stone, a grey city in a green sea. - Arya I, AFFC
x
The stony maze of islands and canals that was Braavos, devoid of grass and trees and teeming with strangers who spoke to her in words she could not understand, frightened her so badly that she lost the map and soon herself. - Samwell III, AFFC
Braavos is built on a lagoon at the northwestern end of Essos.
Tumblr media
(map!)
It is often described as foggy, with a damp, cool, maritime climate. It draws significant inspiration from the city of Venice, Italy.
The day looked to be a rare one, crisp and clear and bright. Braavos only had three kinds of weather; fog was bad, rain was worse, and freezing rain was worst. But every so often would come a morning when the dawn broke pink and blue and the air was sharp and salty. Those were the days that Cat loved best. - Cat of the Canals, AFFC
x
"Winter is nigh upon us. The day I left Braavos, there was ice on the canals." - Jon IX, ADWD
It's not an ideal climate for growing lemons, as the text humorously notes.
"Seven hells, this place is damp," she heard her guard complain. "I'm chilled to the bones. Where are the bloody orange trees? I always heard there were orange trees in the Free Cities. Lemons and limes. Pomegranates. Hot peppers, warm nights, girls with bare bellies. Where are the bare-bellied girls, I ask you?" "Down in Lys, and Myr, and Old Volantis," the other guard replied. He was an older man, big-bellied and grizzled. "I went to Lys with Lord Tywin once, when he was Hand to Aerys. Braavos is north of King's Landing, fool. Can't you read a bloody map?" - Mercy, TWOW
It's nothing like Dorne, a more suitable place for a lemon tree.
Anguy shuffled his feet. "We were thinking we might eat it, Sharna. With lemons. If you had some." "Lemons. And where would we get lemons? Does this look like Dorne to you, you freckled fool? Why don't you hop out back to the lemon trees and pick us a bushel, and some nice olives and pomegranates too." - Arya II, ASOS
x
There children frolicked naked in the sun, music played in tiled courtyards, and the air was sharp with the smell of lemons and blood oranges. - The Captain of the Guards, AFFC
And to the author's credit, he appears to fully understand the conditions under which lemon trees can and cannot thrive.
Sweetrobin loved lemon cakes too, but only after she told him that they were her favorites. The cake had required every lemon in the Vale, but Petyr had promised that he would send to Dorne for more. - Alayne I, TWOW
So you can see why it's a bit puzzling.
Has anyone ever thought to simply ask George about it?
Of course. If you had the opportunity to ask George R. R. Martin anything, why wouldn't you waste your moment on something as stupid as this?
George was asked about the discrepancy, and surprisingly, he was uncharacteristically forthcoming. He acknowledged that it's very perceptive to pick up on a detail like that and playfully hinted that it points to something else.
Tumblr media
Dany remembers a lemon tree outside the house with the red door in Braavos, but citrus trees shouldn't really grow in Braavos's cold, foggy climate. Is this discrepency significant? Does it point to future revelations about Dany's past? Thank you so much. Very perceptive of you. Yes, it does point to . . . well, that would be telling. - George R. R. Martin
In that case, is Lemongate confirmed to be real?
No, not exactly.
Despite what he said, there's really no hints in the text concerning any secrecy around Daenerys' upbringing.
Ser Willem Darry was in Braavos, a fact that could be confirmed by several people.
"It is a secret pact," Dany said, "made in Braavos when I was just a little girl. Ser Willem Darry signed for us, the man who spirited my brother and myself away from Dragonstone before the Usurper's men could take us. Prince Oberyn Martell signed for Dorne, with the Sealord of Braavos as witness." She handed the parchment to Ser Barristan, so he might read it for himself. - Daenerys VII, ADWD
And while trees are rare in Braavos, they do grow in the gardens of the wealthy, where you'd expect Daenerys to be. It's not out of the question that a lemon tree could grow there. Lemon trees can also grow in Venice, Italy.
Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty. - Samwell III, AFFC
Compare one questionable lemon tree to how the author handles Jon Snow's parentage, and you can see why the theory has some issues.
Then what the hell is going on?
I believe one of three possibilities exists.
POSSIBILITY #1
Daenerys lived in a nice big house in Braavos with Ser Willem Darry, and there was a lemon tree outside her window. Nothing weird is happening.
POSSIBILITY #2
We have another instance of an unreliable narrator, who is rewriting a past event that never existed.
Daenerys is chasing a red door and a lemon tree that were never truly there, and she'll never reach her destination. It's a commentary on the futility of her entire objective.
POSSIBILITY #3*
(*also known as the real reason)
At the last minute, George changed the location of the big house with the red door from Tyrosh to Braavos, resulting in a humorous inconsistency in the story.
Tumblr media
Yes, it's really that simple.
Blood of the Dragon was a novella published in the July 1996 issue of Asimov's Science Fiction magazine. It is based on the Daenerys chapters from A Game of Thrones and was released before the book itself.
Tumblr media
Here's an excerpt:
That was when they had lived in Tyrosh, in the big house with the red door. Dany had slept in her own room there, with a lemon tree outside her window. After Ser Willem had died, the servants had stolen what little money they had left, and soon after they had been put out of the big house. Dany had cried when the red door closed behind them forever. They had wandered since then, from Tyrosh to Myr, from Myr to Braavos, and on to Qohor and Volantis and Lys, never staying long in any one place.
Whoops! Something's different.
The big house with the red door originally being in Tyrosh isn't surprising, given that ✨ we know ✨ Daenerys speaks with a Tyroshi accent.
The merchant must have taken her for Dothraki, with her clothes and her oiled hair and sun-browned skin. When she spoke, he gaped at her in astonishment. "My lady, you are … Tyroshi? Can it be so?" "My speech may be Tyroshi, and my garb Dothraki, but I am of Westeros, of the Sunset Kingdoms," Dany told him. - Daenerys VI, AGOT
You'd have to spend many of your formative younger years in Tyrosh for that to be the case.
As Irri and Jhiqui helped her from her litter, she sniffed, and recognized the sharp odors of garlic and pepper, scents that reminded Dany of days long gone in the alleys of Tyrosh and Myr and brought a fond smile to her face. - Daenerys VI, AGOT
Amusingly, this now-deleted part of her history was somewhat alluded to when her mirrored image twin from Tyrosh was introduced to the story.
The Tyroshi sellsword was not a good man, no one needed to tell her that. - Daenerys V, ASOS
x
"Is it Daario? What's happened?" In her dream they had been man and wife, simple folk who lived a simple life in a tall stone house with a red door. - Daenerys II, ADWD
Many inconsistencies and discrepancies are present throughout the series, but they are especially noticeable in A Game of Thrones.
Lemons grow in Tyrosh, but they don't typically grow in Braavos. It's a detail the author overlooked when making the simple change, and I guarantee you this is him poking fun at himself (and the Lemongaters) for the error:
So, we can probably put it to rest.
But George himself said it was pointing to something??
Aww, adorable.
If you've been paying attention to George R. R. Martin for any amount of time, you should realize that if there were something truly significant about lemon trees not growing in Braavos as part of a secret plot yet to be revealed, there's no way in hell he would ever answer that question in that manner on LiveJournal.
Allow me to finish his sentence for him,
Dany remembers a lemon tree outside the house with the red door in Braavos, but citrus trees shouldn't really grow in Braavos's cold, foggy climate. Is this discrepency significant? Does it point to future revelations about Dany's past? Thank you so much. Very perceptive of you. Yes, it does point to . . . [my changing the story and overlooking a minor detail, like an idiot.]
Fine, but why did he switch it from Tyrosh to Braavos?
I don't know why, but you should stop overthinking this, and we should move on.
(because of arya.)
STUMPY'S THOUGHTS:
I'd like to think Lemongate has been debunked, but I'll leave it to the people to render their verdict.
Does Lemongate amount to nothing? Absolutely. Do lemons grow in Braavos? Not really. Is the house with the red door a symbol of an idealized past she'll never be able to replicate in her future? I don't doubt it.
Many things can be true here, but one thing that's not is that she lived in Dorne, and Lyanna Stark is her mother.
VOTE:
NEXT THEORY:
Oberyn poisoned Tywin

𝐐𝐔𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐍 𝐁𝐘 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐘𝐄𝐍, 𝐀 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐅 𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄.
Tumblr media
All these quotes are taken from many materials from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, from members of House Targaryen. You can change location, names and pronouns as you see fit. Some of these are little spicy as well might mention the typical topics of the book like inc*st.
I mounted him and took him for a ride, and I mean to do the same tonight. I love to ride.
Red maidens, the two of us, but now we've both been mounted.
You were made for battles, and I was made for this.
As soon as I am well, let's make another. I want to give you twenty sons. An army of your own!
But you are far braver than me. I would sooner fight a dozen battles than do what you've just done.
He's either brave or mad, that one.
You will be a great king, even greater than your father.
A ruler needs a good head and a true heart. A cock is not essential.
If your Grace truly believes that women lack the wit to rule, plainly you have no further need of me.
My uncle Maegor was cruel, but age is crueler.
No mother should ever have to burn her child.
I am old as well, but I am still younger than you.
She was his most trusted counselor and his right hand.
Dark Sister was made for nobler tasks than slaughtering sheep. She has a thirst for blood.
The war will end when the heads of the traitors are mounted on spikes above the King's Gate, and not before
Prince Daemon had been the wonder and the terror of his age.
The archmaesters call you the Conciliator, I have heard. It is time that you conciliated.
I have my own kingdom here.
Such a fierce little thing she is, they say, she has no need of comfort. They are wrong in that, I fear. All men need comfort.
She has no interest in kissing games, nor boys. She plays with them as she used to play with her puppies.
I have seen the way she preens and prances around Baelon. That is the husband she desires, and not for love of him.
She wants to be the queen.
How can he rule the Seven Kingdoms when he cannot rule his brother?
Your guards are slow and lazy.
If any man questions my son's right to the Iron Throne, let him prove his claim with his body.
When the sun sets, your line shall end.
A king should never sit easy.
Aegon the Conqueror brought fire and blood to Westeros, but afterward he gave them peace, prosperity, and justice.
Do you think we would name him Aegon the Conqueror today if he had not had dragons?
But we will come again, Princess, and the next time we shall come with fire and blood.
I fed my last husband to my dragon. If you make me take another, I may eat him myself.
We can go back to the ends of the earth together. But I'll get there first, as I'll be flying.
Brother, if it please you, we have brought your new queen.
The sound of the queen's laughter was like music to this fool, so sweet that even the king was known to smile.
The whole realm knew that the girl loved Daeron's bastard brother Daemon Blackfyre, and was loved by him in turn.
Daemon Blackfyre loved the first Daenerys, and rose in rebellion when denied her.
A hundred years ago, Daenerys Targaryen came to Dorne to make a peace. Now another comes to make a war.
Too many dragons are as dangerous as too few.
I have done my duty by you, and given you an heir.
When Viserys sold their mother's crown, the last joy had gone from him, leaving only rage.
Whenever Aerys gave a man to the flames, Queen Rhaella would have a visitor in the night.
The queen your mother was always mindful of her duty.
I want to be with you, I want to sail the seas and have adventures.
Every knight needs a squire. You look as though you need one more than most.
omeday the dragons will return. My brother Daeron's dreamed of it, and King Aerys read it in a prophecy.
If you cannot manage a horse, fetch me some wine and a pretty wench.
Why did you throw your life away? For this whore? She's scarcely worth it. A traitor. The dragon ought never lose.
She bathes in blood to keep her beauty.
You've known queens and princesses. Did they dance with demons and practice the black arts?
Duels were fought over the right to sit beside her.
She gave him her bed, but never her hand. It amused her more to make him jealous.
I want him dead, the traitor. I want his head, you'll bring me his head, or you'll burn with all the rest. All the traitors.
But a man does not marry his heir to his servant's daughter.
Aerys was mad, the whole realm knew it.
There have always been Targaryens who dreamed of things to come, since long before the Conquest.

Wild Kratts Episode Ideas
We made it another year. 2024, specifically, January 3rd, 2024, marks the 13th anniversary of Wild Kratts, which first aired in 2011 with Mom of a Croc. I remember first watching the bros as a toddler with Zoboomafoo, and I have grown up with Wild Kratts, from kindergarten to college. I owe the bros for opening my eyes to how amazing the creature world is. To celebrate, I wanted to share some episode ideas I came up with:
Fish Hacking 101: Chris and Martin desire to master the hunting techniques of the mysterious tentacled snake. But to Gourmand, the obscure serpent is just another ingredient for his latest dish.
Yetis and Leopards: To keep the bros away while they plan a surprise party, Aviva sends the bros looking for snow leopards. However, they find the mysterious cats much quicker than expected, forcing Aviva to keep the bros away from the Tortuga by baiting them with a Yeti robot she built, but snow leopards are great hunters.
Upriver With a Paddlefish: During Tortuga maintenance day, Koki goes kayaking, when she is hit by a jumping sturgeon. Injured and with her creature pod busted, the brothers find an unlikely hope in another strange looking fish.
Inferno the Fire Hawk: While visiting Australia, the crew observe a black kite intentionally setting fires. Paisley learns of this too, and hires Zach to mind control the birds into obeying her.
Dot and Stripe's Big Day: The crew have successfully rehabilitated a pair of orphaned Malayan tapir twins. But the spots the crew have chosen to release the siblings in have each been claimed by older, tougher tapirs. Aviva gives the bros Tapir powers so they can traverse the jungle and find new, suitable territory for the twins.
Ice Day for Salamanders: In the most ambitious experiment yet, the brothers freeze themselves alive in Siberian Salamander Powers for a day. However, Paisley abducts the brothers, intending to auction them off to the other villains to finance her schemes.
The Perfect Mudskipper Name: Martin's attempt to ride a mudskipper lead to him loosing his suit, and a mudskipper merging with it, like Seven did. The now humanoid fish kicks the gang out of the Tortuga, and all efforts to get him out of the ship and the suit fail. The brothers must learn to fight like a mudskipper to win their ship back, and get the fish back to normal.
Parrotfish Beach: While at the beach, Martin chances across a parrotfish. Not having seen one of the vibrant fish since they saved some from Zach and Donita, the team get to work to make a new suit. Meanwhile, Paisley has decided to create her newest road right through the reef, using a monstrosity of a machine she calls, "The Colossus of Roads".
Nudibranch Bingo: After finding a Blue Dragon Sea Slug, the brothers head to the Philippines in a game to see who can find the most species of sea slugs. Unbeknownst to them, Donita has hacked their cameras, so she can find and collect the colorful invertebrates to use in her newest designs, having grown bored of regular gems and jewels.
Hagfish Day: After finding out hagfish have a day dedicated to them, yet barely anybody knows about them, the brothers take the Pulponaut to the bottom of the sea to look for the elusive slime eels.
Jimmy and the Silverback: While his friends go off with a Gorilla troop, Jimmy laments his fear getting in the way of his desire to explore. Fortunately for him, another troop comes to the Tortuga. Unfortunately, the bros, Aviva, Koki, and the first troop, get in trouble, and Jimmy must step up to save his friends, and the gorilla.s
What Big Teeth You Have: While diving, the brothers chance upon a den of Wolf Eels and their eggs. Soon though, the bros must take up the duty to defend the nest after the parents are injured. While their friends take care of the expecting parents, Chris and Martin must keep the eggs safe. But competition is fierce. Octopus and other Wolf Eels want the den, and the brothers must keep them away.
Do the Velvet Worm: The brothers are on a long overdue adventure to find the rare and mysterious velvet worm, who thrive in wet and warm environments. But Paisley's newest scheme threatens to destroy the home of the worms, and all the other creatures there.
Keeping up with the Hornbills: Chris and Martin seal themselves in with an expecting mother Hornbill so that they can document the process, but when Donita teams up with Paisley to collect animals from the forest she is destroying, the tree the bros are in gets tossed into the river.
Condor Crash Course: A malfunction of the Tortuga's new autopilot system causes the ship to crash at the end of the Andes Mountains, and the crew are stuck at the other end. Martin thinks they could traverse the mountains with condor powers, but the trick is to find the birds first.
Quetzals of Then and Now: Aviva tells her friends the story of how her grandmother obtained the feathers of the Corcovado family birdie in a massive creature adventure.
Four Kratts and Some Saigas: The brothers' sisters come to visit, but creature adventuring doesn't stop for family reunions. The crew get a call of a herd of Saiga suffering from a bacteria infection.
Vampire Deer: The brothers learn about Chinese Water Deer, which have fangs in lieu of antlers. But the investigation into these weird deer is interrupted by Donita, who wants to use the deer as material for her new line of formal wear: Donita's Deer-est.
24 Hours in Lake Baikal: From freshwater seals to special sponges, and even weird natural formations, the record-holding Lake Baikal has caught the brothers' interest. It has also caught the interest of Gourmand and Paisley, who team up to make sure the brothers don't interfere.
Queen of the Meerkats: Struck by how fierce meerkats are, Zach captures the head female and several others to use in his new line of "Zach-Tion Figure" toys. Chris and Martin must save the meerkats while their friends keep what's rest of the fragile hierarchy from falling apart.
Olm's World: The brothers realized they never got around to making Olm powers. They return to Europe to find the mysterious "human-fish", so they can figure out the secrets of the unique salamander, such as how it can live for so long despite being blind.
Jamming With Moths: While building more bat boxes for their friend Bite-Size, Chris realizes the Little-Brown Bat, and all the other bats, are struggling to catch moths. The team is spurred by curiosity to determine whether the echolocation of a bat is truly a fool proof adaptation.
Be the Bee Eater: Bee Eaters are disappearing, and Zach is behind it. He plans to mind control the birds and sell them around the world as insect catchers.
Jumping Spider Jubilee: The crew split up to find the most unique species of jumping spiders. They will meet hunters, dancers, and even one little spider who lives up very high.
Night with a Not-Lizard: Impatient to study tuataras, a miniaturized Chris injures his leg, and he must use his skills, and the powers of the Tuatara, to avoid rats and other hungry predators to get back to the Tortuga.
