" I know she is proud. How not? what else was left her but pride? i know she is strong. How not? the Dothraki despise weakness. if Daenerys had been weak, she would have perished with Viserys."
— Tyrion vi, a Dance with Dragons
.
This piece was quick and so pleasing to draw because I have draw her in traditional Kazakh dress)I think Dothraki need more colours in dressings and better braids🐲

How the heck does Dothraki not have a word for "thank you?" Putting aside certain implications, surely all cultures and especially Dothraki who have such a clear hierarchy have words for respectful acknowledgement, right?
Wrong! In 2018, Floyd et al. came out with a paper called "Universals and social diversity in the expression of gratitude". Long story short, it's mainly a Western thing to have a word for "thank you" and use it a lot. It's hard to summarize an entire article in a single sentence, but this quote from the paper does a pretty good job:
The idea that gratitude's role in social reciprocity is tied to saying ‘thank you’ appears to be largely based not on systematic empirical observation but on attitudes about politeness in English-speaking society.
I think having a word for "thank you" and using it a lot is a modern phenomenon, and probably started from European languages and spread.
Additionally, the implication with questions like this is often that it was my decision for Dothraki to lack a word for "thank you". It wasn't. I had said that Dothraki didn't have a word for "please". From that, the writers came up with the idea of Dothraki lacking a word for "thank you". It had one, at that point, and so I got rid of it to match the show. Even so, Dothraki lacking a word for "thank you" is probably more accurate than it having one, though, since apparently having such a word is rarer than one might think.

Dothraki Hairstyles
Tumblr media
I based the hairstyles on Mongolian and Plains Native American hairstyles, as some North African hairstyles. Their hat ornaments are made from horse bone, leather, and in the case of a very few high ranking members silver. We also know from the books that they oil their hair, this a common practice for south Asians as well as North Africans, so this means that a number of different hair textures are possible.

What character(s) would you have liked George to have included as a POV that made sense for the story?
Irri or Jhiqui late in ADWD after Dany left to augment Barry and Quentyn. And suddenly they turn from "simple, superstitious, loyal" and essentially mindless handmaidens to complex characters with their own opinions, motivations, priorities and judgments, and - this would be crucial - with an explicit eloquence that is denied to them from Dany's POV.
Dany speaks Dothraki as a second language, learned recently, and I can't help but think that the clunky, simplified way we hear them speak through Dany's POV is due to her inability to properly pick up and convey the nuances of their speech.
Either of these two characters suddenly emerging from the obscurity of Dany's inattention, as three-dimensional individuals would be really powerful because it would instantly reveal Dany as lacking true interest in them as people, which is pretty damning in terms of her heroic self-image. Plus, it would finally grant us better insight into Dothraki culture from inside it, giving it a voice and dignity, even if we don't share their values, similarly to the various Greyjoys giving us nuance and detail on Ironborn culture.
I think this would have amplified the impact of Dany's grasslands POV, her self-image contrasting with an outside perspective.

« Four burly slaves hurried forward, bearing between them a great cedar chest bound in bronze. When she opened it, she found piles of the finest velvets and damasks the Free Cities could produce … and resting on top, nestled in the soft cloth, three huge eggs. […]
The khal's bloodriders offered her the traditional three weapons, and splendid weapons they were. Haggo gave her a great leather whip with a silver handle, Cohollo a magnificent arakh chased in gold, and Qotho a double-curved dragonbone bow taller than she was. […]
Other gifts she was given in plenty by other Dothraki: slippers and jewels and silver rings for her hair, medallion belts and painted vests and soft furs, sandsilks and jars of scent, needles and feathers and tiny bottles of purple glass, and a gown made from the skin of a thousand mice. » AGOT Dany II
Dothraki wedding presents!!! I love everything that makes the world feel vast and populated and lived in. This is a bit outside of my wheelhouse, but i had a lot of fun coming up with these designs <3

a story about (y/n) who is khal drogo's translator and khal drogo slowly falls in love with her and asks her to be his khaleesi in front of all his people one night by the fire
Tumblr media
The Khaleesi's Heart
(Y/N) had always been captivated by the vastness of the Dothraki Sea, with its endless golden plains stretching as far as the eye could see. She had joined the Khalasar as a translator, seeking adventure and a chance to immerse herself in the rich culture of the fierce horse lords. Little did she know that her journey would lead to an unexpected and life-changing encounter.
Khal Drogo, a man of immense stature and a reputation that preceded him, had never taken much interest in the affairs of outsiders. His heart was bound to the warrior code, and his focus was on conquest and the endless expansion of his Khalasar. As he led his people through the sea of grass, he rarely spared a second thought for anything or anyone beyond his warriors and his beloved bloodriders.
One fateful evening, as the setting sun bathed the horizon in hues of fiery red and orange, Khal Drogo's warriors captured a party of travelers on the fringes of his territory. Among them was (Y/N), who had been accompanying a merchant caravan on her journey to learn the Dothraki ways. She found herself standing before the imposing Khal, her heart pounding in her chest.
(Y/N) knew the importance of diplomacy and the art of communication. Fluent in both the Dothraki tongue and the common language of Westeros, she was able to bridge the gap between her people and the fierce Khalasar. Her eyes met Drogo's, and she bowed respectfully, uttering the words of introduction in flawless Dothraki.
"Anhaan vekhat hoshori, majin adak jin," she spoke, introducing herself as a translator.
Khal Drogo, unaccustomed to hearing his mother tongue from the lips of a foreigner, was taken aback. His dark eyes bore into hers as if trying to decipher her intentions. Her confidence, intelligence, and the fire in her eyes intrigued him in a way that no one ever had.
Over time, as (Y/N) continued to serve as translator, she and Khal Drogo shared more than just words. She found herself drawn to the strength and honor that defined his character. He, in turn, began to seek her presence during meetings and discussions, valuing her insights and wisdom.
As the weeks turned into months, a connection grew between them, though they rarely spoke of it aloud. (Y/N) saw beyond the fearsome exterior of Khal Drogo, recognizing the depth of his heart and the unspoken longing in his gaze. Khal Drogo, a man of few words, found himself yearning for (Y/N)'s companionship, her laughter, and the way her eyes sparkled when she shared tales of her homeland.
The Khalasar continued its relentless journey across the Dothraki Sea, conquering rival clans and collecting tribute. In the midst of the dust and chaos of battle, Khal Drogo and (Y/N) found solace in each other's presence. They shared stolen moments by the campfire, where he would listen to her recount stories of the world beyond the grasslands, and she would learn of the proud history of the Dothraki.
One night, as they sat by the fire, the sky above them was ablaze with a tapestry of stars. Khal Drogo turned to (Y/N), his eyes filled with an intensity she had come to know all too well.
"Anhaan vekhat anni, (Y/N)," he said, his voice low and filled with sincerity. "You have brought light to my Khalasar and to my heart. You are strong, wise, and beautiful. Will you be my Khaleesi?"
(Y/N)'s heart skipped a beat. She had never anticipated such a proposition. To be the Khaleesi of the Great Khal Drogo meant leaving behind her old life, her dreams of adventure, and embracing a destiny she had never imagined. Yet, as she looked into the eyes of the man who had come to mean so much to her, she knew that her heart had already made its choice.
"Yes, Khal Drogo," she replied, her voice unwavering. "I will be your Khaleesi."
Word of Khal Drogo's declaration spread throughout the Khalasar like wildfire. The warriors and the women ululated in celebration, recognizing that their Khal had chosen a powerful and deserving Khaleesi. The union of two strong souls promised a future of prosperity and unity.
As the flames of the fire danced around them that night, Khal Drogo and (Y/N) sealed their commitment with a sacred Dothraki ritual. Their love would be tested in the trials of the unforgiving Dothraki culture, but they were determined to stand together, a force to be reckoned with.
And so, under the vast, starlit expanse of the Dothraki Sea, a new chapter in their lives began. Khal Drogo, once a warrior without equal, had found something even more precious than conquest – love. And (Y/N), the outsider who had ventured into this world seeking adventure, had found a love that would change her destiny forever.
As the months turned into years, Khal Drogo and his Khaleesi led the Great Khalasar to new heights, forging alliances and achieving greatness that had not been seen in generations. Their love story, whispered through the winds of the Dothraki Sea, became a legend, a testament to the power of love to transcend boundaries and unite even the fiercest of hearts.
In the heart of the Dothraki Sea, beneath the endless sky, Khal Drogo and (Y/N) embarked on a journey of love and destiny, a journey that would shape the future of the Dothraki and etch their names into the annals of history as a love that conquered all.

daenerys targaryen is waaay better than me, because the moment the north would started throwing shade at my crew, I'm out.
you don't like them? whatever, not everyone has a good taste. but give them some respect.
boo-hoo poor sansa, how we're gonna feed them? I DON'T THINK THAT SHOULD BE YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM SINCE THE DEAD ARMY IS COMING. 1. you feed them, 2. you kick dead asses, 3. daenerys gives food from the rest of westeros to the north, in that order, is that simple. "what the dragons eat anyway?" mmm I don't know, maybe meat?? maybe not your problem?? 15 minutes and those dragons will be far away, they'll catch a snack and get back. btw that will give you enough time to inform like 47, 48 persons about secrects you should keep your mouth shut.
all sansa did was "we can't give daenerys the north, we don't need her", okay honey, give me better idea.
those people were that arrogant that they rather reject dany's help AND DIE instead of acknowledge they need her, her army and dragons and the fact she's rightful queen. interesting that sansa or none of the women living there said "hey, you know, send daenerys away, I'm gonna fight for winterfell", they just decided to show how much they despise her and hide in the crypts while dany was risking her life for theirs ungrateful asses.
I would be out in SECONDS. no, even more, instead of talking with jon "please, just bend the knee, man", I'd kill cersei, take the iron throne, make my army bigger, produce more weapon, keep my THREE dragons alive and get ready for dead army. you don't wanna bend the knee, you don't wanna be part of the seven kingdoms? fine, fight with night king's army alone, good luck with that. any person from common people is very welcome in my lands of sIX kIngDoMs under my protection, maybe i'd send them on some island or whatever but most of the northenders, men, their lords, ladies (SANSA AND LYANNA I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU), king etc can die at their own request.
"they didn't trust daenerys, they trusted jon" if they trusted him that much , why didn't they trust him that he made right decision bending the knee to daenerys? funny enough most of those people didn't know jon personally, the same as they didn't know daenerys. all they knew was what they heard about them and what in those stories were bad about dany? about merciful queen who uses her power to save common people, slaves? bunch of racist, xenophobic, biased assholes.
sansa wanted to leave the north since she was a little girl, now you want it back? fine, then fight for it. not expect that someone will do it for you and then make you a queen (what literally happened). knights of the vale fought on littlefinger's order, dothraki and unsullied for daenerys, north for NED'S STARK CHILDREN, not you personally sweetie, you didn't do a shit for them.
daenerys was sooo calm when everyone were praising arya and jon for what they did in the battle ("OMG JON RODE THE DRAGON", hmmm only bc dany let him to and dude barely could do it) I'D BE FURIOUS
"winterfell is your, your grace" ok sweetie, you know what, nevermind, I'm out. with that attitude you can stop night king by yourself, see yaaaa... or not

So I'm not totally sure how prevalent this idea is with Daenerys antis, but I've seen more than one person talk about how Dany was racist towards the Dothraki and Ghiscari. This is, of course, ridiculous. Dany embraces both these cultures when she lives among them and even considers staying with them multiple times. Yes, she disagrees with and is even disturbed by some of the traditions these cultures have, but these traditions are ones of slavery, rape, and injustice. We the readers should also recognize these are not good traditions.
In every culture, there are traditions that are harmful, this is an unfortunate consequence of our humanity. No matter what country, city, etc you are coming from, there are things in the history of the place and people that are not good. The same is true of the world of ASOIAF. Slavery of Old and New Ghis, the right of the First Night in the North, the Ironborn's practice of taking thralls and salt wives, the Dothraki raping the women of whomever they defeat, the human experimentation in Valyrian, the invading armies of Westeros raping and burning the smallfolk. All these are practices meant to be condemned by the reader and acknowledged by povs as being wrong. Acknowledging a huge flaw like legal rape and fucking slavery is not being racist!
When Viserys calls the Dothraki barbarians and is actually racist towards them, Dany defends them and claims them as her own people. After all, she believes at this point that she will spend the rest of her life among the Dothraki. Now someone could try to argue that Dany refusing to stay a Khaleesi in the Dothraki Sea after Viserys' death is an example of her looking down on them ("If I were not the blood of the dragon...this could be my home.")
However, this is, firstly, not about race, second of all, this isn't about her thinking she's better than them, this is about her perceived duty to her house. Viserys raised her to believe it is their duty to their house to reclaim the IT, and not that he's dead, the duty lies solely on her and her unborn child. She isn't the only character who sacrifices her happiness out of perceived duty, Jon joins the Night's Watch because of this and literally anything Tyrion does on Tywin's orders or for Cersei.
With the Ghiscari, Dany only has issues with the slavers. She loves the slaves and is driven to free them, and, let me remind everyone, slavery in ASOIAF is not race-driven, that was another thing the show fucked up on. When Dany rules in Meereen, she embraces the culture quickly, just like with the Dothraki. She wears the traditional clothing, learns Ghiscari, and has Ghiscari nobles and freedmen on her counsel.
Any and all negative thoughts and associations Dany has with Ghiscari traditions (the tokar, the wedding ceremony) are because of the false peace and the continued power of the slavers. She hates how it feels to put on the tokar because it's a reminder that she is constantly compromising with the slavers and is allowing the Astapori and Yunkai'i slaves to fall back into chains. She doesn't want to marry Hizdahr because she knows he is working with the Harpy and he is constantly pressuring her to give into other demands by the slavers. The only traditions Dany has issues with are associated with slavery and the false peace in Meereen.
Daenerys isn't ever racist towards the Dothraki or Ghiscari, she values their council, and respects their traditions except the ones revolving around rape and slavery. She is only driven to take the IT because of perceived duty to her house. Daenerys is unhappy in Meereen because she hates slavery and is dissatisfied with the false peace there.

Couple of advertise-y things. First, I've got a wiki where I and a group of volunteers document my various languages on a wiki that's designed to be like Wiktionary. So, for example, if you type in a form like sen, you get a page that has that word as it's used in every language I've ever created:
Tumblr media
Then the entries themselves are kind of cool and have some info to read through:
Tumblr media
Basically, it's Wiktionary, but only with languages I've created.
Anyway, it costs like $325 a year to keep running, because of its size (if it were smaller, it would be free, i.e. included with the hosting plan I was already paying for, but since it's so massive, I had to pay for a dedicated database just for the wiki). If you'd like to contribute a little bit to support keeping it up, I would appreciate it, but it's under no threat of being taken down at the moment. I plan to keep it up indefinitely. Mostly this is just to let you know that it's there. We had to disable web crawlers due to it overwhelming the server, so you can't google for it and find it. It's a cool resource, though, if you're interested in any of the languages I've done.

Why I hate conlangs
A conlang (constructed language) is one that was consciously created for some purpose—usually either fiction or global communication—rather than one that developed naturally (Crystal 2008; Wikipedia). Some well-known examples include: Dothraki, Valyrian (Game of Thrones) Esperanto Na’vi (Avatar) Quenya, Sindarin (Lord of the Rings) Klingon (Star Trek) Atlantean (Atlantis: The Lost…
