The Chieftains - Jack of All Trades
I'm a roving jack of many a trade Of ev'ry trade, of all trades And if you wish to know my name They call me Jack of All Trades
I'm a roving and a sporting blade They call me Jack of All Trades I always take a great delight In courting pretty, fair maids So when in Dublin I arrive To look for a situation You can always hear them all say "He's the pride of all the nation"
On George's Quay I first began And there became a porter But me and me master soon fell out Which cut our acquaintance shorter In Sackville Street I was a pastry cook In James' Street, a baker In Cook Street I did coffins make In Eustace Street, a preacher
In Baggot Street I drove a cab And there was well respected In Francis Street I'd lodging beds To entertain all strangers Now, Dublin is of high renown Or I am much mistaken In Kevin Street, I do declare I sold butter, eggs, and bacon
In Golden Lane I sold old shoes In Meath Street was a grinder In Barrack Street I lost me wife And I'm glad I ne'er did find her In Mary's Lane I dyed old clothes Of which I've often boasted And later in Exchequer Street Sold mutton, ready roasted
I'm a roving jack of many a trade Of ev'ry trade, of all trades And if you wish to know my name They call me Jack of All Trades

Hello, congrats on 300 followers! It’s well deserved! Can I request a matchup? I don’t have a preference for LOTR or The Hobbit characters. I’m 5’5, I have very long brown hair (although my family sometimes says it looks auburn) and brown eyes, and I’m on the curvy/chubby side. I’m pretty shy and anxious around those I don’t know, but I’m more outspoken and honest with those I do know. My interests include cooking for my family, taking care of my cats, three goats and my pig! I also love photography and writing/reading. I love nature and live in a rural area. I love going on walks and collecting rocks, acorns and other cool things I find. I don’t really have a preferred gender. I hope you’re feeling well after your surgery! I wish you all the best 💛
Thank you and of course you can! Enjoy your hobbit man for I ship you and…

Merry!
I can just see you as the cutest visitor to the Shire, maybe you’re even staying there for good. You may not be a hobbit but you look like a quite tall one with your sweet eyes and gorgeous curves. Merry sees you out in in the field one day tending to your goat and his heart leaps out of his chest. That’s it for him, one look and one wave from you and he’s lost. Luckily for him, though, he’s not afraid to walk right up and introduce himself- only the neighborly thing to do, after all. Leans up casually against a fence post as he asks how long you’ve been living ‘round these parts. Your shy glances only have him smiling wider. The next time you run into each other, it’s almost literal, Merry nearly bowling you over running from a farm grab while you’re turned around to pick up a pretty rock. Fate must be smiling on the hobbit, though, as you offer to let him hide in your farmhouse and end up making him afternoon tea while he’s there.
Visits become more natural, more regular from then on. He’s found mushrooms? You are the only one he trusts to cook them up right. He was just walking by and oh? Need help with the pig? They’re stubborn little buggers, after all. Merry becomes quite a fixture at your farm and he doesn’t even care if the Sackville-Bagginses talk.
Shy as you are, you make a bold move one day to return master Brandybuck’s calls, bringing a pie by, and soon after your tea and talks you’re strolling down the lane with him until he comes to a garden pretty enough to stop you and tell you he wants to make you his. Your lips are as sweet as your smile, that’s what he tells you after your first kiss there.
One of Merry’s favorite things is when your feisty side comes out. The way you’ll sass Pippin when the three of you have outings, tell him like it is if his idea’s a bit too daft. Sweetheart as you may be, you know how to stand up for yourself and Merry admires that. You can see it in the way he looks at you, chin resting on his hand and love sparkling in his eyes.
After every outing he brings you back a new rock, acorn, or something else like an intact snail’s shell. He’ll even help you build a shelf to display it all if you’d like one! Merry loves indulging your sense of adventure and play in general, sometimes tackling you down into the grass to surprise you. He loves play wrestling, so don’t be shy! You’re the sunshine of this hobbit’s life, so you best believe you’ll get away with quite a lot.

"As for me, it is my profession. I do not pretend to anything better."
Eleanor Gwyn was born in 1650 and grew up in poverty with her mother Ellen and her sister Rose in London’s Covent Garden. She began her professional life as an oyster girl or cinder girl and may or may not have worked as a child prostitute before she found employment in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, as an orange-seller in 1663. There, her comedic talent was discovered by the “King’s Company," and Gwyn became one of the very early star actresses on the Restoration stage. She soon entered into a relationship with lead actor Charles Hart, and the two of them fuelled a new trend of “mad couple” plays. Thus, not only did Gwyn make theater history as a celebrated audience favorite for the seven years that her stage career spanned, she also, indirectly, influenced literary history, with playwrights such as John Dryden tailoring roles to her talents.
After a brief affair with Charles Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, in 1667, she became one of the chief mistresses of the “Merry Monarch” King Charles II until his death in 1685. Nell Gwyn herself died only two years later, in 1687.
Nell Gwyn, King Charles II’s legendary actress-mistress, is revered as “one of the most attractive characters in British history,” credited with “lifting the spirits of a nation” after eleven years of Puritan austerity. Her extraordinary ascent from lowborn street girl and possibly child prostitute to orange-seller in the pit of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on to celebrated actress and finally to royal mistress has been the subject of numerous biographies and films and has also found its way into a number of recent novels, or “fictionalized biographies.”

One reason I should pick up a book of hers today
Here are several!
Reevaluating the meaning of the human experience
Some books are extremely calming and feel like a warm hug, The Waves in particular
You'll start employing Free Association in your day-to-day life (you will come across a seemingly insignificant thing and go down memory lane basically)
You'll never look at a mere coffee cup or a cloud the same ever again
Orlando was way ahead of its time and the fact that it was inspired by her then lover Vita Sackville-West is enough
Feminism™️
You'll most definitely widen your vocabulary and come across new words and structures
You get a peek into her mind, and needless to say that she's a genius(I recommend starting with Mrs. Dalloway)

It will be a stormy weekend for most in Nova Scotia, including HRM. Environment Canada has extended a snowfall warning for central parts of the province, as upwards of 30 cm of snow is expected to fall Saturday through Sunday. Environment Canada said at 5 p.m. Saturday that HRM will see an additional 10-15 cm on Sunday. Gusty winds are also expected through the weekend, gusting between 60 and 70 km/h at times.
HRM is asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to poor driving conditions and to allow crews to continue snow-clearing operations safely.
The municipality says that its crews are focused on clearing Priority 1 routes, which include main arterials, emergency routes, and Halifax Transit routes. Crews will also continue to clear Priority 2 routes, which include residential streets, gravel roads, and private lanes.
Many municipal recreation facilities will delay opening on Sunday. A decision will be made at 10 a.m. (with potential re-opening at noon) regarding whether rentals, facilities, and programming activities will continue as scheduled.
The overnight winter parking ban will continue to be enforced (in both Zone 1 (Central) and Zone 2 (Non-Central)) on Sunday from 1 to 6 a.m. Residents are reminded that regardless of the status of an overnight winter parking ban or whether you have received a notification, vehicles can be towed, day or night, at any time of year, if they are interfering with snow-clearing operations, as per Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.
Residents are strongly encouraged to continue to park off-street to allow crews to clear snow as efficiently as possible. The Province of Nova Scotia is providing additional emergency support for those experiencing homelessness within the temporary emergency shelters located at the Multi-Purpose Centre of the Halifax Forum (6210 Young Street) and Beacon House (125 Metropolitan Avenue) in Lower Sackville.
Capacity at all shelters will be reassessed over the weekend. The Halifax Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) team is conducting wellness checks over the weekend to assess the safety of anyone who chooses not to leave an outdoor sheltering location. GSAR is also offering transportation for those sleeping rough to emergency shelters during this weather event.
Areas to the north of HRM, like Colchester and Pictou Counties and into Cape Breton, are under a winter storm warning. Snowfall amounts in these areas are expected to reach 30-50 cm with the potential of up to 80 cm over higher elevations in Cape Breton.
Regions to the south and west of HRM are under special weather statements, and 10-15 cm of snow is forecast.

Eye-witness accounts: A glimpse inside N.S. fire damaged neighbourhoods
A burnt metal frame of a trampoline offers a tiny trace of the young family who until Sunday, lived on Jenna Lane.
The Osbornes left in a hurry, like their neighbours, as a wildfire raged and embers jumped, sparking homes and trees on fire.
That was Sunday evening. By Tuesday morning Danny Osborne had already seen the video of his home on social media. He knew it was destroyed.
When RCMP escorted Osborne and his neighbour Dan Cavanaugh into their Yankeetown subdivision to search for a cat, the 45-year-old couldn’t have imagined what it would be like to stand in front of his home that’s no longer standing.
“It’s a pretty gut-wrenching feeling. Walking around the turn to see your place no longer there,” Osborne said.
On Jenna Lane, a small street that shoots off of Yankeetown Road, Osborne said there’s usually eight homes. On Tuesday he only saw two houses and a garage.
“And the rest of them are all flattened,” Osborne said.
Dan Cavanaugh, Osborne’s neighbour and friend, had heard rumours his house along Yankeetown Road was destroyed. He was in the truck with Osborne as they went to look for a cat.
When they first pulled onto Yankeetown, the damage didn’t look so bad.
“And we got to our friends’ place, saw her house was completely gone, her neighbour to the left was completely gone,” Cavanaugh said. “Half of our road is gone. There’s no houses left on half of Yankeetown road.”
Cavanaugh’s house was spared.
“I’m elated at the same time I’m heartbroken for our other friends,” he said.
Maureen and Lorne Smith were also in line for a police escort to get their pets.
Although the videos they had seen online showed their house was standing, they also worried what they might find.
“It looks like a warzone,” Lorne Smith said.
“It's hard to imagine everything black and down. That’s just depressing to me to think,” said Maureen.
When the Smiths picked up their cat, they found their house was okay. The couple attributes this to the nearby pond but added other homeowners nearby were not as lucky.
Along their route, Lorne Smith counted about a dozen homes destroyed and many are on Yankeetown Road.
“The daycare is gone. The custom woodshop is gone,” he said.
Those who’ve been inside and have seen the damage describe the path of the fire as if it danced or jumped around.
“There’s spots that’s completely green. And then there’s spots right next to it that are burnt,” Lorne said.
When Danny Osborne left Sunday, he took his trailer with him. It was a decision he learned paid off when he lived through the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016.
“We lucked out in Fort McMurray because we were actually able to come back to our home, which was still standing there. Here, not so lucky. You’re not gonna get that lucky twice maybe I guess,” he said.
For now, Osborne will live with his family in his trailer in his friend’s yard in Lower Sackville. He’ll soon move his family to a campground.

The Sackville, NB Quarry
Original Post Date December 24, 2011
Tumblr media
It was a cold day but my niece Catherine wanted to take us on a walk through the old Sackville Quarry and we’re glad we did. It was absolutely beautiful in there, especially with the icey waterfall we discovered. I hadn’t been back in there since high school. I remember my first time there in 1990 at a high school party. As usual the cops raided it and everybody scattered!
The Pickard Quarry (at the end of Quarry Lane off Salem and Pickard off York St.) was opened in 1883 to obtain stone for the construction of Centennial Hall at Mount Allison. The original proprietor, Charles Pickard, was a stone merchant and later mayor of Sackville. The quarry had 25 employees and produced 5,000 to 8,000 tons of stone annually. Buildings constructed out of stone from the Pickard quarry in Sackville are:
1. The original Royal Bank (some of the original pink stone remains at the left of the entrance). 2. The Bank of Montreal, Moncton. 3. The Royal Observatory, Ottawa. 4. The Bank of Nova Scotia, Truro. 5. Carnegie Library, Saint John. 6. Legislative Building, Toronto. 7. Customs House, Waterloo. 8. Customs House, Halifax.
Stone from the Pickard quarry was used in over one dozen buildings at Mount Allison. The quarry was finally closed in October, 1979, after stone was extracted to become part of the Roy Crabtree building.
More from Tantramar Heritage Trust:
The Quarry, located less than a mile west of campus, was not always a place for pot smokers and amateur graffiti artists. It actually has a history. Gwen L. Martin writes in the book For Love of Stone, written for New Brunswick’s Mineral Resources Division, that it was first mentioned in Sackville documents in 1885. The quarry was a source for sandstone, and contributed to building Sackville structures, over a dozen of which are on campus and include Centennial Hall. The original proprietor was Charles Pickard, who incorporated the Sackville Free Stone Company on June 4, 1901. It was an efficient and busy quarry, connected to the Intercolonial Railway’s Tormentine branch. Pickard secured markets across eastern Canada, and even sent stone to the USA. The last project done with stones from this quarry was the restoration of the Ontario Legislative Building in 1971. The building was originally built in 1892 with stones from the quarry. In 1979, neighbours of the quarry complained about noise and dust, and it was shut down in October, 1979. The leftover stone was used to build the Crabtree Building on campus, and the Quarry is now surrounded by a raspberry patch and filled with water.

Day 39 Charlottetown - Sackville 109kms
Today started off early because I knew I might get slowed down waiting for a shuttle across the bridge. Another thing I must remember never to do again is leave my toothbrush and toothpaste in a shared bathroom. Whilst I was having breakfast and packing this morning a lady from another room had an hour long shower using half the towns water supply. In the end, when I had Shirley loaded up and ready to go, I knocked on the door and asked for them.
I’ll insert the map from the first half of my ride here.
Tumblr media
You can see the black line which is the route I took. The blue line is the google maps route for cycling. You’ll find out later why I’m never going there again either.
So my route looked great! It started off ok. I took this on the bridge leaving Charlottetown. It was another beautiful day!
Tumblr media
I headed up to that middle road which was quiet and picturesque but it was hilly.
Tumblr media
This photo was possibly one of the first hills. They got bigger and steeper and there was a lot of them. Maybe about 12, so my first 20kms was very slow.
By the time I reached Kinkora they started to level out a bit and I managed to move a bit faster. Kinkora looked like a nice town
Tumblr media
And not long after I was cycling through this beautiful green and gold scenery.
Tumblr media
Soon I turned left and headed down to Barden-Carleton. I was on the highway but it was no problem. It was a great road and not too busy. I had to turn off the next highway before it reached the bridge and head to the bridge authority. This was really easy to find too. The signs here must be good if I can follow them without any problem. I had to press a couple of intercoms and talk to a man to request a shuttle. It took over half and hour to come but I was very impressed with the service. The lady and I velcroed Shirley onto the trailer and proceeded over the bridge.
Tumblr media
Confederation bridge is pretty amazing, it’s almost 13kms long. I was driven another couple of kms and deposited not far from the highway.
What an amazing service!! You’ll never guess what it costs. It also included the ferry ride over a couple of days ago. Cars pay over $50 to cross.
It was only $9:50!! Unbelievable!
So from there I was on the highway. It’s a great highway! The shoulder is wider than the car lane and virtually free of debris.
Tumblr media
It’s also not busy. I checked and it’s ok to ride the highways here.
The kms clicked by quickly and I pulled over when I saw somewhere to eat at just about 20kms along. Now while I was waiting for the shuttle I ate a muesli bar from the BnB in Montague. It had more sugar then muesli. I also ate the rest of the shortbread biscuits I had purchased at the bakery there. They had way too much sugar and were nothing like the Scottish shortbread in the UK. The bread rolls I bought tasted more like fairly floss than bread.
So obviously I didn’t feel like the cakes on offer even though they look pretty good. I had a coffee and some chicken wings, just for a change.
I didn’t stop too long as I was keen to get moving. Im only allowed to post 10 photos so I can’t put another map in.I took the bike track because it was a shortcut. Big mistake! It was horrible! Gravel and puddles everywhere, Shirley was soon covered in mud. It looks alright in this photo
Tumblr media
But it really wasn’t. I checked the little picture marking the track and realised it was for quad bikes and snowmobiles. That’s why they are everywhere. I can tell you now they are not suitable for me and my Shirley. I stuck it out thinking it was only 10kms. It was 15 and when I stopped to look at the map ( to find out when the torture would be over ) I was swarmed by horrible black biting bugs. Arrggh!
That’s why I will never do it again!
Finally I was back on a minor road and heading into Sackville.
The place I’m staying in is very beautiful
Tumblr media
But my room is a little strange.
Tumblr media
It’s time to go out and find something for dinner.

Full Moon by Vita Sackville-West
Vita Sackville-West was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, that self satisfied collection of literary and artistic bohemians and radicals. This poem is both joyous and mysterious describing a scene of unabandoned female enjoyment at a time when women’s behaviour was still constrained by societal norms.
Tumblr media
Vita Sackville-West and a Full Moon
Full Moon
She was wearing coral taffeta trousers
Someone had bought her from Isfahan
And the little gold coat with pomegranate blossoms,
And the coral-hafted feather fan,
But she ran down a Kentish lane in the moonlight,
And skipped in the pool of moon as she ran.
She cared not a rap for all the big planets,
For Beteljuice or Aldebaran,
And all the big planets cared nothing for her,
That small impertinent charlatan,
But she climbed on a Kentish stile in the moonlight,
And laughed at the sky through the sticks of her fan.
Sackvilke-West (1892-1962), a product of the English minor aristocracy, became a famous poet, novelist and socialite. Despite her bisexuality, open marriage and association with the rebels of Bloomsbury, she remained politically conventional, supporting the Conservative views and positions of the upper class to which she belonged.
