I have a question that you might know the answer to - do you know of any poetic use/kenning from Medieval Irish (or older) where wood or linseed/flax is used in reference to or maybe causing great fits of anger or shame?

The only thing I can think of that vaguely fits this description is in Táin Bó Cúailnge, during the fight with Fer Diad, when Láeg is inciting Cú Chulainn's rage to make him fight harder by insulting him. O'Rahilly translates these lines as:

"your opponent has chastised you as a fond mother chastises her child. He had belaboured you as flax (?) is beaten in a pond. He had ground you as a mill grinds malt. He has pierced you as a tool pierces an oak. He has bound you as a twining plant binds trees. He has attacked you as a hawk attacks little birds, so that never again will you have a claim or right or title to valour of feats of arms, you distorted little sprite"

As the question mark suggests, O'Rahilly doesn't seem very sure about the translation of the flax metaphor. There's also a reference to wood here, but it doesn't seem to be about the specific properties of these materials, just how they might be destroyed or diminished in the process of working them with tools. It's the insults and the suggestion that he's losing the fight which causes the rage and therefore helps aid Cú Chulainn's victory.

(Sidenote: thank you for prompting me to look at these lines again, because one of these metaphors is the same as one used on Tóruigheacht Gruaidhe Griansholus in a way that's relevant to the paper I'm giving at ICCS and I hadn't noticed, so I need to make sure I mention that.)

It's possible there are other references to flax that might draw a more direct connection with anger, but poetry and metaphors are not my main focus when it comes to Irish lit, so I wouldn't be aware of them off the top of my head.
