Early MCYTblr Interviews: Anonymous
our interviewee today is the anonymous author of the "SBI Crit Post". he's asked to both remain anonymous and not to be sought out; he's been incredibly helpful and polite through this entire interview process, and i would ask you all to leave any residual feelings you may have from that time at the door. If you think you remember who posted it, please keep it to yourself. that said, let's begin!
Q: Before we begin talking about the ‘Crit Post’, I’d love to hear what your experience of MCYTblr was like before it was posted. Do you have any standout memories from this time?
A: Not particularly. There's some things that I guess looking back on nowadays is kind of wild, like how in the groups I was running in, shipping of any kind that wasn't DNF was super frowned upon (as in, I trigger tagged for IRL shipping)…but truthing wasn't really? Or, how back then the lines between 'critblr' and main mcytblr were super fuzzy. I hung out with both groups before the Crit Post to no issue. Oh!!! And this is a wonderful piece of MCYTblr lore that you may not know, but when I posted the Crit Post, I was apart of a MCYT art exchange themed after MCC called MC Creatives. I think it only happened once, and I can't exactly remember who ran it. They were a really nice DNF (? or just DTeam) blogger. I think it's cool to see that even back then the community was pretty tight knit and had overarching community activities like we see today. It's interesting to me that our fandom has missed out on some of the more important parts to being a fandom… not many big bangs, only one or two that I know of. It's very sad, but we are a weird fandom in general, and definitely a Modern Fandom, if you understand what I mean by that LOL. There is one memory that does stick out, completely irrelevant to this interview though. The fake Dreambur meetup. I pulled an all nighter for it. I was shaking. I drew fanart (though never posted it). Everyone was hysterical. And then it was faked and everyone went WHAT.
Q: As you let me know in your dms, you were the user who made the original “SBI Crit Post”. Would you mind giving a quick rundown of what it was exactly, for anyone who may not know?
A: I would, but frankly I barely remember anything about it. It was like… I saw someone being like "weird that we aren't as critical of SBI as we are of DT" and I thought, "Well, I can probably try?" and made shit up. It was nonsense. I can't even remember what I said about Philza. The points against the others were "Tommy is too young to be in this business" "Wilbur queerbaits" and… "Technoblade needs to be less honest about his ADHD he's glorifying it" or something like that. Again, it was nonsense at its best.
Q: What was your reasoning at the time for making the post? Did the overall culture around you play a part in it?
A: Here's the part no one knows: At the time of posting, I was 13 by maybe… one, two, or three weeks. And I'd spent almost the entirety of my time as a 12 year old in a community that was like "we need to be Critical of our Favorite Creators because this is Righteous and the Only Good Way To Engage With MCYT" and I was like "Everyone here is older than me and therefore endlessly smarter than me," and therefore just accepted it. You can see it very clearly in the part that was "critical" of Wilbur Soot. He was queerbaiting for what? Acting like he wanted to kiss men? Dressing nice? Ridiculous! But if we called Dream a queerbaiter (and never GNF, because everyone was convinced he was gay), then I thought surely Wilbur Soot could also be a queerbaiter! This made total sense to baby 13 year old me. It's not fair to really call that indoctrination: it's not like I was falling down an alt-right pipeline or anything. I was just a stupid kid with too much internet access who liked minecraft and knew nothing about like Dan & Phil or Septiplier (kind of thing that would make me suspicious of this activity--especially truthing). I thought I was fufilling some honor by saying "and yes, my favorite minecraft boys aren't without fault either!" The people that stayed friends with me after that… some of them were my closest normal non-Critblr friends, who refused to abandon me (shout out to you guys you know who you are), and the rest were the people in Critblr who were… okay with my behavior.
Q: I understand that the backlash to the post was very intense– what was it like from your perspective? Did it have any affect on you?
A: Lots. Lots and lots and lots. I lost a bunch of my close friends who weren't okay with what I'd said or how I'd doubled down, and it really messed with me as a kid in the middle of quarantine. There were times where I genuinely considered hurting myself irreperably as either a way to "apologize for what I had done" or just a way to stop worrying that everyone I knew was going to block me one day. Those feelings lasted for a long time, I still struggle with them to this day, over three years later (? I think). And I was kind of lead to believe that was an okay response. I recieved asks the night that it all went down where I was told I should hurt myself. Of course my own behavior wasn't cool, but neither was that. I know there was a post out there by a popular (at the time?) Technoblade blogger that detailed the faults in that post, but I never read it. All I knew about it was that people saw it, and harassed me because they saw it, and that the OP of that post hated me. It got to the point that seeing that blogger's URL caused me to have panic attacks, a ridiculous thing because that blogger as far as I know never actually did anything wrong. I don't know. Every once in awhile, someone in the server I'm in (hi some of you are definitely reading this :3 i love you guys) will bring up the post in passing and I'll have to mute the channel for 24 hours because I'm scared. Or even when we're discussing normal drama, if something feels too close to the Crit Post, or like it might come up, I'll get shaky and nauseous and have to mute the channel for 24 hours. It's weird, the shit being told to kill yourself because you did something dumb as a 13 year old can do to you.
Q: As a follow-up: What, if anything, do you wish had happened instead?
A: I don't know really. I guess the obvious answer is "I didn't make the post" or "I didn't double down", but I think the real answer has to be that I wish the community I was in hadn't taught me that what I was doing was an okay move.
Q: Do you have anything else to add about the Crit Post, MCYTblr, or the community as a whole?
A: Not really. I "retired" from MCYTBlr in I think 2022, but kept a passing interest in it for a long time, and I'm still active in a discord (hi again) comprised entirely of fans and retired fans. I loved MCYT, and in some ways, I still do. When I'm sad, I put on old Technoblade videos. When I'm really sad, I put on old Purpled videos. These things are my comforts, things that I haven't ever been able to give up. And that's good! Even if I don't talk about MCYT anymore, I'm glad it's there for me.

I've seen a post on twitter abt c!Phil pulling SBI + idk c!Tubbo, c!Fundy, and c!Ranboo out of the dsmp to a safer world after having a horrible ending w c!Dream taking over and it made me realize how I'm just in deep with c!Phil crit. Because at the very core of it, at the end of the day, this was kinda c!Phil and c!Techno's fault.

THE sbi crit post (reupload)
after the original and the iconicmcytblrposts version both being deleted, i was pretty sure the sbi crit post was gone permanently. thankfully, after a good amount of digging i was able to find an internet archive version, which im posting here for accessability (and because the archive version mentions op by name.)
op has since abandoned their blog, but please, still dont seek them out to harass them. im not posting this as much to mock as i am because i think even dumb fandom history shit deserves to be preserved. this is the full text of the post, minus the requesters url removed by me.
———————————————————————
cw, critical of sbi
as requested by @/[url removed], a SBI critical post. Going from youngest to oldest. None of this is satire, no matter how silly these points seem
TommyInnit
A kid. He is arguably too young to be doing what he does.
Twitch is a site that’s quite adult, even with many streamers being minors, and many of the people watching the streams also being minors. Swearing, sexual jokes, etc. are (if we’re looking at the definition of it) nsfw, and let’s be real, if you can’t have a job, you shouldn’t be probably shouldn’t be engaging in NSFW things. Yes this includes making stupid little sex or penis jokes, since they’re being broadcasted to thousands of people.
Many of his friends are adults and they have to watch themselves around him, which is something they shouldn’t really have to do due to their line of work. They should be able to make shitty sex jokes and flirt with their peers because that’s their job, but around Tommy they can’t. Bonus points for befriending a fucking 32 year old. Remember that one John Mulaney set? Where he talks about how fucking weird Back to the Future is? Sorta the same thing only we know how Phil and Tommy met so not nearly as weird. But still a little weird.
Technoblade
This one was the hardest, and I thought about it for a good bit. Hard to write, but I think I’ve got it.
He is glorifying his ADHD. I know it’s not purposeful. I know ADHD isn’t bad. But by doing what he does open and in the public (just look at the potato war) he is making it seem as if hyperfixation is the Best Way to win something. He spent months holed up in his room, farming potatoes in a block game. 10 year old kids are going to see that. And they’re gonna want to do it too. And it is not good for you
Wilbur Soot
are you gay or not.
We all agree that he’s bi coded (not saying he is, saying that he presents as bi). He’ll, someone on the Projekt Melody LoH straight up called him a “bi-guy”. Because of this he often gets away with his more Home of Sexual jokes, yknow, like the same ones we hold Dream accountable for? Just look at the entirety of him asking Dream on the pizza hut date. Most definitely queerbaiting but we ignore it because he just seems like he’s LGBTQ. Hell, this is where I get my definition of Soy-Boy from; “a man that seems bisexual, so you just kinda assume it and then one day you find out he’s actually straight. The fact he’s straight sits in your mind, but the fact he’s not bi is constantly dancing at the front of your head. There is nothing you can do about this. Also soy-boys have good fashion senses”
ALSO he is fairly open about his political beliefs (re: Piss Speaks Louder than Words cover, calling Sapnap (who at the time was RPing a cop) a pig, calling himself a liberal), and yet he doesn’t say anything about his fans that are racist or such (please just go look through the comments of the Piss Speaks Louder than Words cover. It’s a hell).
Ph1lzA
“Sir that is my emotional support block man!” all the kids with fucking terrible parents say. Trust me, I know because I am one of those kids.
He is an escape for many of us, a father that will always care, a father that won’t hurt us (or in my case, threaten so much I’m afraid to be around him). And Phil is also an unhealthy coping mechanism.
He is “trapped” behind our screens. He can’t actually comfort us. He can’t give you a hug, or ruffle your hair, or anything that a good father could because you don’t know him. You can call him dad in donos. You can ask for life advice. But he’s not your father. And we all need to realize that, I think.
None of SBI is your family. They have family dynamics with each other, but you don’t have family dynamics with them.

MCYTBLR HISTORY VOL. 4 - sbi crit post
following an influx of people saying that sbi (sleepy bois inc, a group consisting of wilbur soot, tommyinnit, philza, and technoblade) didn’t get enough criticism, a tumblr user made a post summarizing possible issues with the group. a repost can be linked here, but the original was deleted after backlash and harassment. because of this, the creator’s name and url will not be archived here.
possibly because the post was made due to a request and not any specific events, many users found the criticisms to be reaching at best and absurd at worst.
the post pointed out several genuine issues at the time (tommyinnit being inexperienced and young for the amount of publicity he experienced, parasocial relationships with philza) but the evidence and other opinions in the post overshadowed these. because of this, it became infamous, and was widely mocked for months.
the creator of the post has since apologized, and was very young when they wrote it. as such, this post comes with the disclaimer that the mcytblr culture at the time revolved around being critical of creators, especially the group that the original poster was a part of, and as such, it was understandable that someone would want to make observations on creators that weren’t typically criticized.
the post is known colloquially as the “techno glorifies adhd post”, and references to “bi-coded wilbur” are common among long-term mcytblr users.

Anon who sent me the submission (I don’t know when you sent it aaaaa hopefully you see this?) - I am straight up just going to delete those posts and avoid bringing it up in the future. I’m so sorry you had to/still have to deal with that stuff. I didn’t really think about that because I definitely wasn’t in the Tumblr fandom when that was posted and am very much looking at it from the perspective of an outsider. Thanks for sending that ask in because it really shows how much Tumblr infamy (I guess?) can affect someone but many people don’t really realize it?

i'm not sure how exactly you're running this blog, but in case no one else has brought this up already, i need you to know about the sbi critical post. op has long since deleted the original post (it instantly sparked discourse for being full of awful takes, and iirc it was up for less than a full day), but i still have screenshots (from september 28 2020)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
urls are blacked out because op and the person who requested the post received death threats for this -- i do still have links to reblogs of the original post, but i don't know how ethical it would be to share it with that in mind lmfao
"glorifying his adhd" "are you gay or not." and "bi coded" were phrases thrown around as memes very often in the aftermath of this post
i waited to post this until now; yes, i do remember it, and thank you for blacking out the urls! the person who posted it has been kind enough to agree to an interview that i'll be posting after this.
before i even post the interview, i'd like to say-- the op of the "SBI Crit Post" was harassed to an insane degree after posting it. he's specifically asked to remain anonymous, a request i'll be honoring and i expect all of you to as well. don't try to seek him out; if you think you remember who it was, please keep it to yourself.
that said, i'm incredibly excited to get to post this interview. i think it sheds a lot of light on how brutal MCYTblr can be, and i think it's high time that we revisit this and reexamine exactly how much harassment the op received over some tame (if amateur) criticisms.

Also like the way c!Techno, c!Phil, or c!Wilbur do things to comfort others who are canonically like their close friends and loved ones and it works extremely well but the fandom is always without fail just like “NO you did it WRONG”
Like for example with Tubbo all three of them have offered him safety, protection, and a sense of control, something that he’s basically been fighting for since the beginning and as a result he’s built new nations, antagonized others, and literally built fucking nukes just to feel these things and yet they’ve never worked up until this point, the point where has a solid promise that him and his family and whatever nation he builds will be protected, and yet the fandom is still utterly convinced that Tubbo should be having a panic attack at the mere sight of Wilbur or Techno and that them giving him a safe place where he’s able to feel like he’s in control is just gonna retraumatize him
Or with Phil telling Tommy that material possessions aren’t more important than his loved ones, Tommy, whose months in isolation with his abuser, making him feel like his friends and loved ones don’t actually care about him, caused him to cling to material possessions as a result, and Phil told him that his loved ones are more important than these things, that they do love him and that it’s okay to have objects he cares about but when it comes to healing they’re not more important than having a support system full of people who love him, and yet the fandom acts like Phil told Tommy he needs to burn everything he owns and destroy his house
It’s just mind boggling to me, especially considering the very same people will say this shit and then turn around and defend characters like Sam’s actions
