“You were out awfully late.”
“FUCKING HELL.” My head whips to the left, and there she is. My mother is sat at her workbench, turning Godfather-style with a mug of tea in hand, and with nothing but a small, flickering lantern illuminating the room. “You scared the shit outta me, Ma.”
“Whoops.” She shrugs, grinning with anything but remorse. “You have fun?”
“Have you been sitting here since before or after I dropped by to grab (y/n)’s stuff?”
“After. It’s not often I wake up to my vampiric son coming in and out so late.” Mom takes a sip of her tea before continuing, “I was worried something went wrong, until I heard the two of you giggling over the sound of that damn motorbike.”
I sigh. “Fair point…” Setting my keys by the door, I walk up to her service desk, and lean my back and elbows against it. “Sorry.”
“I’m just glad you’re alright. Your father, on the other hand is, y’know… peeved.” I groan, tilting my face to the ceiling. Fucking Demetrius. “I’ll make sure he doesn’t give you too much agida about it,” she promises.
I point at her, wagging my finger, and remark, “I’ll hold ya to that.” Retracting my hand, I crack my knuckles, then nod to her workbench. “You working on anything?”
“You still haven’t answered my first question.”
I tilt my head and squint at my mom. She smiles knowingly. “Yes, I had fun.”
“That’s great. (Y/n)’s a–”
“A nice girl,” I finish the sentence. “You’ve already said it enough,” I quip. “I can see it for myself.”
“So you do see it.”
“I mean, yeah,” I mutter, “I figured you knew based on what you saw earlier today.”
“Ah, how could I forget the sight of my son mounting someone.” My mother shudders. I do too, more so at her wording. I’ve already repressed the memory enough that I’m almost unaffected by recalling it. “You didn’t…?”
“No.”
“So what was–”
“We don’t know either.”
“Some kinda… ritual, of sorts?”
I snort. “Yeah, sure. I was sucking the life force out of her with my basement-dwelling vampire powers.”
Matter-of-factly, she states, “My son is a monster.”
“You love me unconditionally.”
“Yeah, whatever.” She waves me off. “You love her?”
My eyes widen as I adjust to the flashbang of words my mom just threw at me. “What?!”
“You have a certain glow about ya,” she grins from over her mug. ”Something happened while you two were out canoodling.”
So annoying… against my own judgment, and admittedly a bit giddy from tonight’s events, I tell her with a heavy sigh, “I kissed her.”
“And she didn’t scream and run?” my mom asks, feigning incredulousness.
“Mom,” I chuckle, “What the fuck!”
“You know I’m kidding,” she snorts, giving in to her own bit. Chugging the last of her mug’s contents, she stands, walks up to me, and reaches up to place a hand on my shoulder. “So, you only kissed, right?”
“Mother.”
“I’m just checking!” She pats my shoulder, before tip-toeing to kiss my cheek. "Love ya, son."
"Love you too. Now go back to bed."
She scoffs as she inches away, her fluffy bunny slippers shuffling along the wooden floors. "Shouldn't I be the one saying that to you?"
I follow, turning near the stairway down to my room. "Yeah, but you're old and fragile."
"Yeesh," she laughs. "Goodnight, Sebby."
"'Night."
