"First Lady Olena Zelenska: 'My anger against the Russians will, I fear, be eternal'" - Olena's Interview with NRC (translated)

Olena Zelenska, wife of President Zelenskyy, turned out to be Ukraine's most important ambassador this year. “We will probably only really realize what has happened to us after the victory.”

When the first bombs hit Kyiv early in the morning, Olena Zelenska was asleep. “I was awakened by a thump. They were explosions, but I didn't immediately understand that.” Dreamily she stretched out her arm to the other side of the bed. Empty.

She had been waiting for her husband for a while after he gave a speech on television and social media at night. Dressed in a smart suit, he encouraged Ukrainians and appealed – in their own language – to Russian citizens to avert a disastrous war. Zelenska, "very tired from the constant tension of the previous days, weeks", had fallen asleep before returning home.

That Thursday morning, February 24, she jumped out of bed to find her husband. She found him, already dressed, in another room of the Presidential mansion. Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not have to say anything. She already knew: the invasion had begun.

“My primary reaction was anger. How could they do this? It was hard to comprehend,” says Zelenska nine months later in Kyiv. “My second thought was that our whole life – everything we had built, all the dreams we had – was broken.” She sighs and lowers her green eyes, as if once again realizing that Vladimir Putin has ruined her existence and that of more than forty million other Ukrainians with his invasion.

Instead of getting her children Oleksandra (17) and Kyrylo (9) ready for school that day, Zelenska had to go into hiding with them. “I went to their rooms to wake them up and tell them what was happening. But they were already awake, dressed and understood exactly what was going on. Nobody panicked.”

As prepared as the Ukrainian armed forces were for the Russian escalation after years of subversive and violent interference, they were practically unprepared. The Zelenskyys hadn't even discussed what the family would do if Russia attacked Kyiv directly. “Unlike many people, I had not packed an emergency suitcase. It was my psychological resistance: I didn't want to believe that there would really be a war. It was too scary to talk about it,” she says.

“Moreover, as a member of the President's family, you have no room for ingenuity. In such a situation, others decide for you what to do.” The security service ordered that she and the children leave Kyiv that evening. “Unfortunately, we had no choice but to rely on their professionalism. If they betray you, you have no chance of survival.”

Betrayal, infiltration, collaboration, sabotage, a Russian death squad : there was so much more than the air raids on Kyiv that directly threatened the 'First Family'. “The enemy has marked me as target number one. My family as target number two ,” Zelenskyy said in a speech the next morning. He had said a fleeting goodbye to his wife and children before they were taken to a – still – secret location in Ukraine, virtually cut off from the outside world. They had declined an American offer to evacuate the entire family. Zelenska: „I did not want to flee while Volodymyr would stay here. But my main responsibility as a mother forced me to get my children to safety.”

The star role that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (44) plays in the defense against the Russian invasion is famous worldwide, especially thanks to his selfie videos in army green shirt from the besieged city. But his previously quite invisible wife Olena Zelenska (44) has gradually emerged as Ukraine's most important ambassador. She travels around Europe in search of support and money. She represents her country at the funeral of the British Queen Elizabeth and called on the House of Commons "not to forget the tragedy of my country and not to get used to our suffering". She is asking the US Congress for guns and joins the Bidens for tea. She brings together Ukrainian and international organizations that focus on trauma processing. And she draws attention to the fate of women and children in the war. She profiles herself as the soft power next to Zelenskyy's hard power .

How vulnerable she still is, is shown by the military checkpoints that must be passed in order to be allowed to enter the district with government buildings in Kyiv at all. This is only possible after a personal safety screening and under supervision. When Zelenska is not travelling, she receives guests and gives interviews in a room without daylight in the former communist headquarters, where the President's advisers have held office since Ukraine's independence (1991). Past another checkpoint and a metal detector, a labyrinth of unlit corridors, partly barricaded with sandbags, leads there. Even a pedometer and an e-reader are not allowed into the room guarded by an armed soldier.

Zelenska understands English very well. Thus she immediately contradicts that she herself is in a golden cage as far as those hardships are concerned. She can barely travel within her own country to put her arm around the shoulders of victims as the mother of the nation, but in government buildings the power remains on during planned blackouts, her water is always hot. „ It's not golden”, she responds with a thin smile. Nevertheless, she chooses to answer questions in Ukrainian and have them translated. She talks kindly, thoughtfully and is reserved, especially in telling about the ups and downs of her husband - whom she still hardly sees. She only wants to say that the way in which he fulfills his unwanted task as war President - steadfastly and despite the misery with some humor - "does not surprise me". Others now see a side of him she's known for decades.

Duties of the First Lady

Zelenskyy became a famous – and wealthy – television actor. In the comedy series Servant of the People (2015-2019), he already played the President of Ukraine before he became real in 2019. It is less well known that when he announced his candidacy live on television on New Year's Eve 2018, he had not consulted Zelenska beforehand. Probably because he knew she wouldn't be thrilled about a life in politics and he could present her with a fait accompli.

Years later, Zelenska won't say whether she was stunned or angry about that. Well, life as First Lady was hard for her. “I understand that not everyone can like you and that it is a political battle, but from day one of the campaign we both got so much negativity. I had to stop myself from doing that because you can't make fun of the President in front of other people." She didn't care for the formalities expected of her as First Lady and tormented herself by reading all the hateful comments she received on her social media.

“It may sound strange, but I feel more confident now than I did back then. Not more comfortable, but stronger. My personal emotions and discomfort are so small compared to what other people are going through that I have no right to be insecure in any way.” Since she was able to return after Ukrainian success in the battle around Kyiv, she has fulfilled functions in which she feels useful: the role as ambassador of her country and advocate for attention to the traumas of all Ukrainians.

Zelenska dresses conservatively, with high-buttoned blouses, dark turtlenecks, long skirts or loose-fitting pantsuits. She wears little make-up and her blonde hair is often tied up in a braid. Her most striking piece of jewelry is a brooch of a dove of peace with a dangling berry from its beak. She remains shy and nervous when she has to speak on an international stage or ask for financial and material help. But she is welcomed everywhere with open arms and has a lot of support from the involvement of other first ladies. “From the start, I regularly call Brigitte Macron and Agata Duda, the First Ladies of France and Poland. Jill Biden and the First Ladies of Latvia and Lithuania even came to Ukraine, which is very brave of them." She doesn't have to enjoy traveling and performing in public to get modest satisfaction from it. "From a genuine emotion and desire to be of use at this time, but I do not overestimate my abilities." When asked about her success, she does not mention the negotiations with the decision-makers in Brussels and Washington, but "seeing how an injured girl who was brought to America with our help can use her prosthesis for the first time."

She says her role as an ambassador has grown naturally. Zelenskyy, who like other men of fighting age does not leave Ukraine, only addresses the world by video. That is why she became his international envoy. When asked about the phenomenal social media campaign of both the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the President and herself, she says she has "no knowledge" of "a global PR strategy" behind it. The approach with daily videos, memes, slick photos and multilingual posts about the suffering of ordinary Ukrainians on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram and TikTok clearly serves a double purpose: to support the morale of the population in our own country and to hold the attention abroad. The contrast between, on the one hand, her frail appearance, Zelenskyy, who mingles with soldiers and civilians after the liberation of a city like Bucha or Kherson, and, on the other hand, Putin, who hides behind an absurdly long table in Moscow, can be heard everywhere.

Traumatized son

Her foreign travels feel like a privilege, but are also frightening. “The first time I traveled without the kids, I had set the air raid alert app we all use to know when regions are unsafe to Kyiv. When it went off I was very concerned: who will take care of them now that they are going into the bomb shelter? It felt powerless not to have control over that.”

Since she returned to Kyiv in April, the Zelenskyy family has "unfortunately not yet" really been reunited. “We sleep elsewhere, the President at work.” She counts on her fingers how many times the family has been able to eat together and can't get past four. “We call him before we go to bed and sometimes I see him here,” in the Presidential office. When her children are asleep, she often lies awake, alone. “I can search endlessly for news. At night the wretched thoughts come.”

Her nine-year-old son in particular “misses his father terribly.” Since the beginning of the war, she has seen her youngest change from “a happy kid with a lot of interests to someone who is only concerned with becoming a soldier.” Kyrylo “rejects anything that has nothing to do with the military. Before the war, he loved to dance, but now he categorically refuses. “This will be of no use to me later,” he says.” He now has a bruise under his eye from a school romp. It worries her. “I wouldn't want him to fight when he grows up. Everyone understands that Ukraine must be defended and yet it is a nightmare for every mother that her son goes to the front.”

She sees her son's behavior as his psychological way of coping with the war. “No one in Ukraine can say he is completely fine.” Most of her work in her own country has to do with this. “After the war, it is estimated that one and a half million damaged soldiers will return to society. And that's not counting the civilians who get injured, who witness murders, lose loved ones and lose their homes. We Ukrainians are all traumatized in one way or another. We can't wait for the win to work on that."

In a country that used to pay little attention to mental health, Zelenska hopes to create space to talk about pain. Although she hardly sees it for herself. “It is difficult to analyze yourself now, there is no time for that. Probably only after the win will we relax and really realize what happened to us. Then there must be a system that can help people with their mental problems. We will suffer the physical and mental consequences for decades. But I really want to believe in post-traumatic growth: that everyone from these trials will become better, braver, and more resilient. Me too."

To keep herself strong, she tries to meditate (“I'm not very good at it yet”) and enjoy little things. But when asked about her most beautiful moment of the year 2022, she says that even that won't work. “We had a very nice summer in Ukraine. Then I looked up and thought, how can something as horrific as a rocket fly in such a beautiful sky.”

Anger, her primary reaction of February 24, still predominates. And although she always speaks Ukrainian with her children and in her official capacity as First Lady, that anger and disgust at Putin and his violence bubbles up in Russian. “I'd be lying if I said that didn't slip through. Anger expresses itself in your mother tongue. And my anger [against the Russians] will, I fear, be eternal.”

Blacklisted

"Blacklisted…" Marinette whispered her face blank as she stared at Chloe's worried face. "Adrien and Lila had Gabriel blacklist me." Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes as she choked back sobs, she covered her face with her hands. Chloe moved quickly pulling her shaking friend into her arms. "What am I going to do Chloe? Fashion was my future-and-and they ruined it for me. Four years of college all for nothing." Marinette sobbed into Chloe's shoulder as both girls sank to the ground.

"I don't know Marinette, I really don't know." Chloe said quietly she pulled back and pulled a handkerchief out of her bag. She brushed it across Marinette's cheeks wiping away the tears. "My mother confronted him and he refused to unblacklist you. It ended in a screaming match and mother declaring that Bourgeois would never associate with them again. Mother has been trying to counter the blacklist but Agreste has gotten too far already Mari." Marinette sniffled nodding as Tikki and Pollen flew over to their holders tentatively, the other Kwami remained near Pollen's little mansion.

"There is nothing that can be done? There has to be something!" Tikki said with anger clear in her voice. Marinette gave her a sad smile holding out her hand for Tikki to sit in it. Pollen landed in Chloe's open hand curling her arms around Chloe's thumb.

"No Tikki there is nothing we can do. We just have to move on." Marinette said they could all hear the anguish in her voice. She took a deep breath stopping herself from crying. "Plagg," she called softly , causing the Kwami to fly over. "normally I wouldn't allow this, but I think Gabriel has a streak of bad luck coming don't you?" Plagg was silent before her let out a loud cackle flying around Marinette's head.

"Oh kid, you're my favorite Ladybug for sure! What do you say Tikki, want to take away his creativity?" Tikki frowned part of her wanted to join in, but part of her pointed out that she should be the better person. "Come on Sugar Cube, I know you want to get payback for your chosen." Plagg said softly, smirking more when Tikki sighed and nodded.

"But only once." She said looking at him with her own glare.

"It's funny," Audrey commented during dinner, she looked up with a smirk. "ever since Gabriel made the mistake of blacklisting you six months ago his designs have really dropped." She let out a laugh before taking a sip of her wine. "On top of that he has not only lost workers, but I heard there is a scandal going on with his son and the model of his!" Chloe snorted at that shaking her head, she took a bite of her steak. She glanced over at Marinette sending her a gentle smile, Marinette returned it before turning back to Audrey. "Mari dear, have you decided on what you want to do? I told you once I have absolutely no problem with you remaining here. On top of that I am more than willing to help you sell your designs under the acronym MDC like you've been doing with Jagged." Marinette glanced down at her food before looking up with a small smile.

"I am going to keep designing for Jagged and Clara. However I will not for others

, no, I have other plans now. Audrey you like my food, pastries, and weird drinks, yes?" Audrey glanced at Chloe in confusion before nodding.

"Yes I find it pretty amazing that you can make pastries from all over the world. Your apple pie is my favorite, although it is the reason that I have to work out so much." The comment caused the two young women to burst into soft laughter. "What does this have to do with anything?" Marinette smiled and placed her elbows on the table resting her chin on one hand. She smirked slightly thinking over her plan.

"You see they derailed my dream just a bit, yes, but I have two loyal customers so I'm not completely stuck. I am not a one trick pony, I have a lot of talents." The mother and daughter were silent both confused, causing Marinette to laugh softly. "I was raised in a bakery, and my Great Uncle is a world renowned chef. I think a restaurant is in my future." Audrey smirked as she held her wine glass up.

"You see Mari, this is why you're one of my favorites, you never let anything keep you down. You'll have my backing and my husband's as well. With Chloe's help we are going to make your restaurant a hit." She shared a smile with her daughter knowing that Marinette's restaurant would be a hit when it opened. "Just one question Mari, what is the theme?" Marinette smirked looking over at Chloe with a twinkle in her eye.

"It's going to be subtlety themed around Paris's heros. Ladybug, Lynx(Felix), Viperion, Ryuko, Queen Bee and current Honeywell. Each hero will have their own signature dish. That is their personal favorite, Ladybug's is macaroons with her famous spotted design. Lynx's is Soupe à l'oignon, and so on. Desserts will be specially designed after their hero., While meals will be served on dishes resembling their costumes."

“Well, you know you’ll have my full backing. Once you pick the perfect location I will have construction workers on the site, and once they’re done interior decorators to listen to your every input! On top of that I will make sure to talk up your restaurant to every business partner I have.” Audrey declared gently dabbing around her mouth with a napkin. She placed the napkin down before standing up; she made her way to Chloe grabbing her daughter's face and kissing her forehead gently, before doing the same to Marinette. “Now it is time for me to retire to bed. Don’t stay up too late girls!” She waved walking to the door nodding when Butler Jean opened the door for her. “Much appreciate Jean.” She gave him a rare smile, one which he returned with his own. Chloe and Marinette shared a look giggling softly together as Jean closed the door behind Audrey.

“Well, Dupain-Cheng, shall we retire as well?” Chloe said mimicking her mother’s voice. Marinette snorted covering her face with her napkins as Butler Jean gave Chloe a stern look struggling to hide his own smile.

“It’s beautiful.” Audrey said in awe taking in her once protegees restaurant. The outside of the store was simple yet elegant. Cream bricks with black accents, the two large windows were slightly tinted and had the name written in elegant cursive. ‘Miraculous’ The outside sitting area was gated off with a station for the host that provided shade on particularly hot days. It was divided into different sections, for certain Parisian heroes. Ladybug, Lynx, Viperion, Ryuko, and Honeywell. Each section was styled after their hero, Marinette and the interior designers had managed to make it so the colors didn’t clash. Instead they gave off a look of abstract beauty. In the middle of the outside area sat one table that had a sign stating it was permanently reserved for the original Queen Bee. The table made Chloe shine with happiness that only doubled once she realized that there was also a table inside reserved just for her. The inside was much the same except in the middle of the restaurant their was another table for Chloe. There was a window that took up much of the back wall, displaying the kitchen where ten chefs were divided in two, each learning their heroes menu together. There were two hallways on either side, the right had the bathrooms and the left had five private rooms. Each styled after their hero. "I must say, I was unsure that you'd be able to fit their colors together. However, you and the interior designers pulled it off flawlessly. May I see the menus?" Marinette smirked a twinkle in her eye as she held up five menus.

"Five menus for each hero. Which one would you like to see? The waiters and waitresses are instructed to request what hero's menu they would like to eat from. Each has eight different meals, five deserts, one specialty drink, and specialty salad, the only thing they have in common is drinks. side salads and soups. Two waiters and two chefs for each hero, more will be added if needed. The chefs have their own spaces together in the kitchen." Marinette surveyed the restaurant, a smile taking over her face as she took in her finished product. Butler Jean walked up placing a hand on her shoulder, his gentle smile already present.

"If I may break character for just a second, I must say and I'm sure Mistress Bourgeois and Mistress Chloe agree, I am quite proud of you Miss Marinette. You've truly outdone yourself." Chloe nodded and came up hugging Marinette's arm smiling at her as Marinette started to tear up. The tears didn't fall until Audrey placed her hand on the back of Marinette's head, a rare smile on her face.

"Thank you for everything." She whispered softly, smiling brightly at them.

"Don't bemused, it's just the news! Nadja Chamack back again! Good afternoon Paris! New in Paris today, I'm sure you have all heard of the hit restaurant Miraculous that only opened a week ago! Well Paris, I have the inside scoop for you today! I was invited by the owner of the restaurant just last night! Now I am sure you are all wondering! Nadja, how did you get a direct invitation?! I was shocked too! Only to discover the owner of the restaurant was my goddaughter Marinette Dupain-Cheng! Marinette is twenty-three years old and now owns one of the most popular restaurants in Paris! Let me tell you! The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and styled after our heroes, you all know Ladybug is my personal favorite. So Marinette set up a private room for my daughter and me. She has five private rooms, all designated with a specific hero, so obviously my room was Ladybug's! I must say the restaurant is truly one of a kind! Marinette has out done herself, and its not just me saying that. Jagged Stone, Audrey Bourgeois, Clara Nightingale, and even some famous actors and musicians have all gone to Miraculous this past week. Each one had raving reviews, so much so that many celebrities and even some heroes are coming to Paris just to eat there. Pictures on Jagged's and Clara's Instagrams show them posing with a bright eyed Marinette, in one of the private rooms together! I think Paris agrees with me when I say this, congratulations Marinette, and I must say this to my goddaughter, I'm so proud of you Marinette. Now it’s time for sports-" Lila paused the tv glaring at is as she stared at the picture of Marinette between Jagged and Clara. She screamed throwing the remote at the wall, causing Adrien to tense up in their share kitchen. He sighed glaring down at his coffee only sparing a glance at the tv as he stirred.

'When will she stop causing problems, I seriously thought she was more mature than this. But no she just has to keep thrusting herself into the spotlight knowing it'll piss Lila off.' He shook his head turning to watch his fiance finish her tantrum, as a smirk covered her face, a plan clearly forming. Only briefly did he wonder what the new lie was going to be this time. 'I am surprised she didn't just give up when we ruin her dream. Lila and father thought for sure that would break her.' He glanced down at his right hand where the ring use to rest anger growing in his chest. 'She deserves it, if she had just kept her mouth shut things would be different. No, she had to tell Ladybug everything when she discovered my identity. If it wasn't for her I'd still be Chat Noir, things would be different. I'd be with the love of my life and out of my father's control. This is all her fault, she deserves to be ruined.' Lila turned to him with a predatory smirk, her eyes glinting in the light as she walked up to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck leaning against him standing on her toes as she lifted one leg into the air. She bit her lip before kissing him and pulling back their lips barely touching as they stared into each others eyes.

" We're going to get reservations at her crappy little restaurant, and we are going to destroy it and her name for good." Adrien smiled and placed his mug down wrapping his arms around her waist. He pulled her closer kissing her deeply before pulling back

"I'll have Nathalie set them up for us under my name. Now go get dressed, we have a photoshoot at 5." He let Lila go picking up his phone and texting Nathalie as Lila went to the shared room in their penthouse. He picked his coffee back up and starred at the picture of Marinette on the tv a smirk crossing his face.

Two days later however they were all furious when the reservations were denied under all their names. They were only given reservations after using a fake name. When the day came they were dressed to impress and arrived in a limo. Lila smirked before letting her mask fall into place, as paparazzi turned to them and started taking pictures. She wrapped her arms around Adrien's arm giggling and waving at them until they reached the door only to be stopped by two guards and a hostess who was looking down at her book. "Name?"

"We are under Anthony Stewart." Adrien said smiling charmingly. The host ran her finger down the book till she came to the name. She nodded and looked up glancing at them before turning to the guards only to turn back surprised.

"I apologize we do have a Anthony Stewart down for reservations but you are not him." Adrien smiled nodding to her glancing at Lila.

"Yes, you see my assistant set up the reservation for us under his name." The hostess gave them a tight smile before nodding politely.

"Yes we do allow that to be done here. Unfortunately I am still not allowed to let you in." She said holding back a smirk at their shocked faces as the cameras began to take even more pictures.

"What do you mean you're not allowing us in?!" Lila said anger displayed clearly on her face.

"I'm truly sorry, here Maya let me take over while you take care of our other guests." Marinette said as she stepped out of the restaurant. She hair was pulled into an elegant up do, still wearing her signature black earrings. However she had a simple pairing of silver glasses on and was wearing a pink pencil skirt a white ruffled top and a black blazer. Her nails were a soft pink matching her toes as she wore black open toed heels. Both Adrien and Lila saw the glint in her eye even though she was smiling politely at them. "I really hoped you would all take the hint when reservations under your name were all rejected. You see I refuse to allow petty drama cause problems for my restaurant, and I'm afraid that you two bring drama with you where ever you go. However I can see my hint was not noticed so I'll tell you myself. Lila Rossi, Adrien Agreste, you two and your families are banned from setting foot into my restaurant. So sorry, but after you two repeatedly bullied me, spread lies about me and tried to ruin my future, I simply couldn't find it in myself to allow you in. Now please leave, your blocking other customers." Marinette turned and began to walk back into the restaurant until Adrien grabbed her arm dragging her back roughly.

"Now listen here Marinette!" He started until Marinette turned to him no fear in her eyes as she drew her free arm back and decked him. Adrien released her arm falling backwards holding his nose in pain, Marinette falling to the ground holding her arm gingerly.

"How dare you!?!" Lila snapped dropping down and wrapping her arms around Adrien's shoulders protectively, glaring at Marinette attempting to play the victims. "Thats it! We are sueing you for everything you have, I can't believe you just assaulted Adrien!" She smirked as she watched an officer get out of her car and advance on them. "Officer! Officer please arrest her! She just assaulted my fiance!" Lila cried out as tears began to fall.

"I'm afraid I'll be taking Mr. Agreste into custody instead Miss Rossi. I was here the entire time and I watched him grab Miss Dupain-Cheng roughly. He assaulted her and she defended herself." Sabrina said staring down at the two as Lila looked up at her in shock. Another officer pulled up with his lights on and stepped out of the car. "Raincomprix, an ambulance is on the way to fix his nose before I take him in. Please make sure to get the photographers names, emails and numbers so that we can get pictures and possibly videos. Then take Miss Dupain-Cheng statement along with pictures of her and her arm, I'll take his pictures. After that get witness statements." Sabrina nodded before pulling out her notebook and walking over to the paparazzi. A few minutes later an ambulance pulled up and took care of Adrien before he was escorted to the back of the police car. Lila stood watching in shock, her mind running a mile a minute, she was quick to flee the scene once she realized pictures were still being taken.

The next day they were all over the news and everyone was on Marinette's side. Videos and pictures were all over social media and Gabriel's lawyers told him that there was no way they could save Adrien from being guilty unless they took a plea bargain. Adrien would admit his guilt and instead of jail time he had to pay Marinette a settlement and was given a restraining order to not come within fifty feet of her for five years. Gabriel's brand took a great hit and for a while Lila and Adrien couldn't step outside with out receiving glares or being refused business. Their reputations were dearly hurt and it didn't look like they'd ever be fixed. While Marinette was higher than ever everyone viewing her as a strong and amazing person after she didn't let his attack hold her back. This drove them crazy but they knew they couldn't do anything, Lila however decided that Hawkmoth just needed to target Marinette. Unluckily for them, it was that targeting that gave away Gabriel's identity to Ladybug and the Miraculous team.

A few months later it was breaking news when the Miraculous team brought in Gabriel, Natalie, and Lila and exposed them as Hawkmoth and Mayura, and that Lila was working with them. Adrien was spared after Ladybug revealed that he was Chat Noir. Everyone was ecstatic, parties were thrown and statues of the heros were placed in different parts of the city. It was shortly after that it was revealed that Gabriel blacklisted many people and allowed his designers to steal work in the hopes that they'd get others akumatized. Marinette was ecstatic that her name in fashion was cleared but she told the press she wasn't planning on going back into fashion. That only a few people would receive her designs, and they would only be those that Clara or Jagged recommended. It was a few months later that Gordon Ramsey visited her restaurant everyone was expecting Ramsey to find something to tear apart and were extremely surprised when he made a tweet praising Marinette's meals and her chefs talents. It actually spurred a friendship between the two and soon Gordon was added to the list of people that received her designs. After this everyone was going to Marinette's restaurant, they had reservations book 6 months out. Every day there is new pictures of celebrities at the restaurant Marinette was the new name in restaurants and cooking. She even agreed to star on some cooking shows. Her favorite guest spot was on Nailed it. The show was themed after heroes Jacques Torres made cupcakes specialized after America's heros, while Marinette made a five tier cake, each tier representing a different Parisian hero. Marinette lost it when she saw the cupcakes for Batman and Robin she couldn't stop laughing and immediately took pictures. Marinette and Jacques held multiple conversations in French, both struggling not to laugh as Nicole made faces at them. When Marinette pulled out the money gun she flicked her head done and a pair of Eiffel Tower shaped glasses covered her face. She looked at Nicole seriously and nodded before saying she was ready to complete the mission. This cause Nicole to burst into laughter. After the winner was announced Marinette made another announcement, all three contestants and their family had an all expenses paid trip to Paris and a free meal at her restaurant Miraculous. It was shortly after that, that Marinette began to open more restaurants starting in each heroes city. Twenty-five percent of their earnings went to either the heros in question or a charity that they picked. Marinette's restaurants got popular quickly and soon she was named the youngest billionaire and only twenty-five years old. Everyone was shocked when majority of her money was put towards charity and thar she began different foundations to help others. She even began programs to pay for peoples schooling in university and colleges. Soon she was invited to charity events all over the world, from the Maria Stark Foundation to the Martha Wayne charity Gala. When she is twenty-six Marinette moves out of Audrey's penthouse and travels between different homes until settling down into a penthouse in New York. Audrey and Chloe both follow her over Audrey simply returning and establishing New York as her base of operations once again.

World War Z was published in 2006, but takes place in 2009 at the earliest. Late in the book, astronaut Terry Knox states that the International Space Station took over 10 years to complete; it started construction in November 1998, and Chief of Staff Karl Rove Grover Carlson says that the Republican party barely eked back into power after a disastrous 2-termer who started a “brush fire war” in the Middle East (George W. Bush). He mentions an election year, but he doesn’t specify if it was the new president’s first or second term, so it’s either set right after 2008 or 2012. This was written before the Nintendo Wii was announced, but one chapter mentions that people brought their GameCubes with them as they fled their homes in search of safety in the frozen Canadian wilderness. This same chapter also mentions that they didn’t know how to pick survival gear; a park ranger finds a SpongeBob SquarePants sleeping bag frozen in the mud because its owner didn’t know the difference between a child’s indoor sleeping bag for slumber parties and a real insulated survival bag for camping.

The new president is never named, he’s just told be be pro-big business and anti-regulation, pushing a placebo zombie vaccine through the FDA to jumpstart the economy. When shit hits the fan, he is “sedated” and his vice president takes power; we’re never told what happened to the president, whether he was bitten or had a stroke, just that he was “sedated.” His Vice President is directly implied to be Colin Powell; he’s former military with family in Jamaica and black. He appoints Howard Dean to be his vice president to form a bipartisan coalition; he is never referred to by name, but it is clearly supposed to be Howard Dean. He was a rising star in the Democratic party from Vermont whose wife is a doctor and whose career imploded after he had a passionate outburst. In 2004, Howard Dean gave a speech where he started passinately screaming about how he was gonna start sweeping state primaries and ride a wave into the White House, punctuating his point by going “HHEEUEAHHGH!!” This was political suicide in 2004, and he was laughed out of the race. In the book, he is referred to only as “the Whacko” because of this. It is implied that he was Powell’s second choice for VP, his first being Barack Obama; the Whacko says that the Democrats wanted somebody else, somebody of the same skin color as the president, but that the country wasn’t ready for that. In 2004, Obama was a candidate for senate in Illinois, so popular and so well spoken that he gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention before he even won his seat; then and there, pundits already had him pegged as the first black president, they could see the writing on the walls. The Whacko becomes president when Powell dies of stress, but he is consistently referred to only as the wartime Vice President, out of respect for his boss.

Also, the Attorney General is implied to be Rudy Giuliani; all that is said about him was that he was the mayor of New York and once tried to give himself emergency powers to stay in office after his term. Giuliani did exactly that after 9/11.

Other real life figures mentioned in the book

Fidel Castro; a ton of Cuban Americans flee the continent and return to the island during the zombie war, and he jumpstarts the economy by putting them to work as cheap laborers and slowly integrating them back into Cuban society. He rehabilitates his image by stepping down as dictator and democratizing the country, voting himself out of office before the “nortecubanos” could hang him for decades of war crimes.

Nelson Mendela, referred to by his birth name Rolihlahla, the father of modern South Africa, he personally invites Paul Redekker, a former apartheid era political analyst, to solve the zombie problem; in the 80s, Redekker created a plan for the white minority government in case the black majority ever rose up against them. In real life, Mandela lowered the temperature when he was elected president, saying that revenge against the apartheid government would do more harm than good. In the story, Mandela uses this as justification to reuse the apartheid era plan to handle the zombie outbreak instead. Redekker is so overcome by his compassion and forgiveness that he has a mental episode and dissociates, believing himself to be a black South African.

Kim Jong-il, the dictator of North Korea, he withdraws all troops from the DMZ and shuts the entire country down. After months of radio silence, it is revealed that the entire country’s population has vanished; all satellite imagery shows a desolate wasteland, no zombies, but no humans either. He presumably moved everyone into subterranean bunker systems where he not only control their lives as on the surface, but now their access to food, water, and air. He presumably became the god emperor he always wanted to be; either that, or the entire tunnel complex has been overrun, turning every man woman and child in North Korea into zombies. The South Korean government refuses to send a expedition into the North to figure out what happened, lest they open up one of the tunnels and unleash millions of zombies onto the surface.

Martin Scorsese, mentioned in passing only as “Marty,” a friend of world famous film director Roy Elliot, who himself is a thinly veiled pastiche of Steven Spielberg. Interestingly enough, the audio book features Martin Scorsese doing the voice of the conartist who created the placebo vaccine

One chapter has a ton of vapid celebrities hole together in a fortified mansion on Long Island, and takes great care to show each of them getting torn apart not by zombies but by regular people who storm the facility because they were stupid enough to broadcast their location on reality television. A redneck with a “Get’er Done” hat (Larry the Cable Guy) and some bald guy with diamond earrings (Howie Mandel) blow themselves up with a grenade. Rival political commentators, an annoying guy who talks about feminization of western society and a leathery blonde (Bill Maher and Ann Coulter) have end-of-the-world viking sex as the facility burns to the ground. A dumb starlet (Paris Hilton) is killed by one of her handlers and her little rat dog escapes on foot. A radio shock jock (Howard Stern) actually survives the war and restarts his show.

Michael Stipe of REM joins the army to fight the zombies

Another war veteran mentions how his brother used to have a bunch of Mel Brooks’ old comedy skits on vinyl record, and how he and his squad acted out the “Boy meets Girl” puppet skit with some human skulls. Mel Brooks is author and narrator Max Brooks’ father.

Queen Elizabeth II, refuses to evacuate England when the island is overrun by zombies. She intends to remain in Buckingham Palace “for the duration,” mirroring the fact that her parents refused to evacuate to Canada during World War II.

Vladimir Putin declares himself Tsar of the Holy Russian Empire, an ultra-orthodox religious state that has armed priests execute political dissidents under the guise of mercy killing people who have been bitten by zombies.

Yang Liwei, the first “taikonaut” (Chinese astronaut) has a space station named after him

While the main conflict is about government responses to the zombie pandemic, we see glimpses of a greater war torn planet.

A major plot line involves a Chinese Civil War which sees the entire communist politburo nuked out of existence by a rebel sub commander, as well as an attempted “scorched space policy” where the government planned to blow up their space station with scuttling charges to cause a cascade of space debris to encircle the Earth and prevent any other countries from launching missions in the future (this is known as Kessler Syndrome in real life, and was featured as the inciting incident of the 2013 movie Gravity). The People’s Republic becomes the United Federation.

Iran and Pakistan destroy each other in nuclear war; everyone thought it would be India and Pakistan, but they had very close diplomatic infrastructure in place to prevent such a catastrophe; Pakistan helped Iran build a nuclear arsenal, but as millions of refugees fled from India through Pakistan to the east, Iran had to blow up some Pakistani bridges to stem the flow of zombies, which led to a border war and eventually total nuclear retaliation.

Floridians flee to Cuba, Wisconsinites flee to Canada, the federal government flees to Hawaii. Everything east of the Rockies is abandoned and ruled by warlords until the government sorts itself out and mounts an expedition to clear the continent of zombies by literally marching an unbroken line of soldiers stretching from Canada to Mexico across the wasteland to the Atlantic.

Israel withdraws from Gaza and the West Bank to become super isolationist, building a wall around the entire country to stop the zombies getting in (they were the first country to respond to the pandemic, and the most successful), but the religious right rebels against the secular left in a civil war that sees Jerusalem ceded to a unified Palestine.

It is an amazing, multifaceted story with so much going on that nobody recognizes. It was written as a response to the end of the Cold War and the start of the War on Terror. It’s about a geopolitical shift, a change in the status quo, a disaster from which the world never recovers; America before 9/11 was a very different place than American after 9/11. Iraq and Afghanistan changed everything, and we’re still feeling their effects to this day; the story uses the zombie apocalypse as the next big international disaster the world must adapt to. World War Z is World War III with zombies, and I think it would do a lot better if it were published today, now that we’ve had several decades to respond to the fall of the Soviet Union and the endless wars in the Middle East and a global pandemic.

Abbé de Coulmier x reader

Summary: Five years has passed since the events of Quills. The Abbé de Coulmier is released of prision by a misterious event. And he will know again those feelings he never thought will meet again: love... and lust.

Warnings: Violence.

The trip was very long, maybe longer than he expected. The nice green fields slowly began to show in front of his eyes, reminding him those beautiful times before the catastroph in Charenton.

The asylum was close to his actual location. He remembered the way very well. It wasn't so close to Paris as people thought. In fact, it was closer to the Nuns' home and some rich villas.

François started to think about those immense houses, those mansions. Villa d'Évreux should be one of those, he said to himself. But the owner of the carriage continued to beat the horses with the whip.

It wasn't so close. It was so far he didn't know where he really was. Extremely tall trees were both sides the carriage, and he couldn't see the fields, only more and more woods.

The coachman suddenly stopped. "We're here!" He shouted. François looked at the sky. It was getting dark. Night was arriving, and he was in the middle of nowhere.

He got out of the carriage, confused as much as that time when he learned that Madeline, that pure, innocent child, was the one helping the Marquis to publish his work, copying his books, using the gift of writing and reading that he taught to her to be in the evil side.

"Is it... In here?"

"No! Haha." The coachman laughed, his strong voice filling the empty way as a bird singing at the break of dawn. "You have to walk from here. I can't keep going. I'm not allowed. But you can, you have the invitation."

Was it really an invitation? For what? His parents promised him a roof and maybe a hot meal for a few days, nothing else. He started to think he knew nothing about those friends of his family. And he didn't knew what he was going to do in there.

Was he going to work? Or give the childs some art and literature classes? He was good at it, and he was still thinking the cell never was an impediment to him. Maybe he was a little crazy, but he still had that part of the Abbé in him, the art lover.

"Alright... How much is it?" He asked, taking out the money from his jacket.

"Eighteen francs." The coachman said, receiving the coins. "Have a nice day, monsieur!" He added, moving the reins to a side, making the horses to turn around and make way to Paris again.

A nice day? It must be at least seven or eight o'clock by now. The owls, crickets and other nocturnal animals' sounds were the background music to his ears while the sound of his own boats cracked the land under his feet, arms crossed to his chest, covering himself of the increasing cold.

And now rain started to fall. Almost running a little, he saw some lights. It weren't the moon and stars, that actually were the only lighting he had those few miles he walked. Those were oil lamps. It was a house in a hill. The now famous to his vocabulary Villa d'Évreux.

He walked the way to the entrance. But suddenly he was in front of the giant iron fence. Maybe he got confused because of the lack of lighting to point the real way, almost 165 feet from where he was.

He didn't find the way to the entrance again. What else could he try? Clapping? Screaming an obvious "Hey!" to the windows? Maybe both were good ideas, more now that the water was making his clothes so wet.

He did both things, one after another, multiple times. Nobody listened. He walked again, trying to find the road, but he couldn't do it. So, he decided to be the intrepid and rebel cell man again. He climbed the fences. And in less a minute, he was in the property.

As he walked to the building, he felt not only the mud under his feet, but also strange noises inside the mansion. Like people screaming because of pain. But maybe those were just the voices in his head trying to take control of him again.

The next that happened wasn't clear. He felt a noise behind him. But he didn't knew if that was a person or a big dog. He only remembered seeing all black after something hit his head.

When he woke up, he recognised the oil lights. But he couldn't feel the rain falling over his body, only the sound of it. He was inside a room, smaller than his Charenton cell. But it wasn't so different. He was chained to the wall, the iron of the handcuffs scratching his skin again.

He saw his clothes covered of mud and water, feeling the dirt in his face and hair too. When everything in the asylum happened, he accepted he belonged to the cell. But now, he was asking to himself what the fuck was happening.

"Hum... Hello? Is anybody there?" He asked to everyone that could be out the cell. "What's going on? Where am I?"

Suddenly, a man opened the door and came into the cell. He didn't say anything. Just approached to him, a started to hit him. François tried to defend himself from the man fists, but he was a real beast that left the place after he was in the floor, trying to breath normally.

Almost fainting because of the hits, François felt some blood coming from his nose and eyebrow, falling slowly to his neck and into his clothes. He raised himself in his forearms, but these didn't resist the pain of his body, and he fell again.

But out of nowhere an angel came in, a really beautiful woman whose face he didn't see very well, but whose arms he felt around his body, trying to make him get up without sucess before blackness arrived to his mind again.

Apostle comes from acclaimed The Raid director Gareth Evans and it’s his take on the horror genre. Spoiler alert: it’s a good one.

Dan Stevens stars as Thomas Richardson, a British man in the early 1900s who must rescue his sister, Jennifer, from the clutches of a murderous cult. Thomas successfully infiltrates the cult led by the charismatic Malcom Howe (Michael Sheen) and begins to ingratiate himself with the strange folks obsessed with bloodletting. Thomas soon comes to find that the object of the cult’s religious fervor may be more real than he’d prefer.

Apostle is a wild, atmospheric, and very gory good time.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter

Some kids dream about being left overnight or even a week at certain locations to play, like say a mall or a Chuck E. Cheese. One place that no one wants to be left alone in, however, is a Catholic boarding school.

That’s the situation that Rose (Lucy Boynton) and Kat (Kiernan Shipka) find themselves in in the atmospheric and creepy The Blackcoat’s Daughter. When Rose and Kat’s parents are unable to pick them up for winter break, the two are forced to spend the week at their dingy Catholic boarding school. If that weren’t bad enough, Rose fears that she may be pregnant…oh, and the nuns might all be Satanists.

The Cabin in the Woods

A remote cabin in the woods is one of the most frequently occurring settings in all of horror. What better location for teenagers to be tormented by monsters, demons, or murderous hillbillies? Writer/Director Joss Whedon takes that tried and true setting and uses it as a jumping off points for one of the most successful metatextual horror movies in recent memory.

Like you would expect, The Cabin in the Woods features five college friends (all representing certain youthful archetypes, of course) renting a….well, a cabin in the woods. Soon things begin to go awry in a very traditional horror movie way. But then The Cabin in the Woods begins doling out some of the many tricks it has up its sleeve. This is a fascinating, very funny, and yet still creepy breakdown of horror tropes that any horror fan can enjoy.

Directed by British director Ben Wheatley, A Field in England is a kaleidoscope of trippy, cerebral horror. The film takes place in 1648, during the English Civil War. A group of soldiers is taken in by a kindly man, who is soon revealed to be an alchemist. The alchemist takes the soldiers to a vast field of mushrooms where they are subjected to a series of mind-altering, nightmarish visions.

A Field in England is aggressively weird, creative, and best of all clocks in at exactly 90 minutes.

Fright Night

Screenwriter-turned-director Tom Holland lets a jaded, smarmy vampire named Jerry Dandridge loose in suburbia and watches the blood spurt in this beloved ‘80s horror staple.

Chris Sarandon brings a nice combination of amusement and menace to the role of the bloodsucker, while Planet of the Apes veteran Roddy McDowall is endearing as a washed-up horror host recruited into a real-life horror show. Much of Fright Night is teen-oriented and somewhat dated, but it still works as a sort of precursor to later post-modern horror gems like Scream.

Green Room

Green Room is a shockingly conventional horror movie despite not having all of the elements we traditionally associate with them. There are no monsters or the supernatural in Green Room.

Instead all monsters are replaced by vengeful neo-Nazis and the haunted house is replaced by a skinhead punk music club in the middle of nowhere in the Oregon woods. The band The Aint Rights, led by bassist Pat (Anton Yelchin) are locked in the green room of club after witnessing a murder and must fight their way out.

Hellraiser (1987)

Directed by Clive Barker based on his novella The Hellbound Heart, Hellraiser is an infernal body horror featuring S&M demons who’ve found a way out of a dark dimension and want to take you back there.

Replacing Bela Lugosi as Dracula was not easily done in 1958. It’s still not easily done now. Which makes the fact that Christopher Lee turned Bram Stoker’s vampire into his own screen legend in Horror of Dracula all the more remarkable. Filmed in vivid color by director Terence Fisher, Horror of Dracula brought gushing bright red to the movie vampire, which up until then had been mostly relegated to black and white shadows.

With its penchant for gore and heaving bosoms, Horror of Dracula set the template for what became Hammer Film Productions’ singular brand of horror iconography, but it’s also done rather tastefully the first time out here, not least of all because of Lee bring this aggressively cold-blooded version of Stoker’s monster to life. It’s all business with this guy.

Conversely, Abraham Van Helsing was never more dashing than when played by Peter Cushing in this movie. The film turned both into genre stars, and paved the way for a career of doing this dance time and again.

The House of the Devil

Indie horror auteur Ti West’s low-budget creepfest is a homage to 1980s horror yet plays it straight; he sets out to make a movie with the feel of genre films from that era without making self-aware in-jokes and references — and he mostly succeeds.

But The House of the Devil is also the definition of a “slow burn”: very little happens for much of the first hour (save a jolt here and there) and then the third act explodes into a paroxysm of murder, gore and Satanic horror. That makes the film feel a little off-balance, although in the end it all becomes quite unnerving.

Hush

In his follow-up to the cult classic Oculus, Mike Flanagan makes one of the cleverer horror movies on this list. Hush is a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse with the typical nightmare of a home invasion occurring, yet it also turns conventions of that familiar terror on its head. For instance, the savvy angle about this movie is Kate Siegel (who co-wrote the movie with Flanagan) plays Maddie, a deaf and mute woman living in the woods alone. Like Audrey Hepburn’s blind woman from the progenitor of home invasion stories, Wait Until Dark (1967), Maddie is completely isolated when she is marked for death by a menacing monster in human flesh.

Further, like the masked villains of so many more generic home invasion movies (we’re looking square at you, Strangers), John Gallagher Jr.’s “Man” wears a mask as he sneaks into her house. However, the functions of this story are laid bare since we actually keep an eye on what the “Man” is doing at all times, and how he is getting or not getting into the house in any given scene. He is not aided by filmmakers who’ve given him faux-supernatural and omnipotent abilities like other versions of these stories, and he’s not an “Other;” he is a man who does take his mask off, and his lust for murder is not so much fetishized as shown for the repulsive behavior that it is. And still, Maddie proves to be both resourceful and painfully ill-equipped to take him on in this tense battle of wills.

The Invitation

Seeing your ex is always uncomfortable, but imagine if your ex-wife invited you to a dinner party with her new husband? That is just about the least creepy thing in this new, taut thriller nestled in the Hollywood Hills. Indeed, in The Invitation Logan Marshall-Green’s Will is invited by his estranged wife (Tammy Blanchard) for dinner with her new hubby David (Michael Huisman of Game of Thrones). David apparently wanted to extend the bread-breaking offer personally since he has something he wants to invite both Will and all his other guests into joining. And it isn’t a game of Scrabble…

Intense, strange, and not what you expect, this is one of the more inventive thrillers of 2016.

Midsommar

It’s hard to categorize Midsommar, Ari Aster’s follow-up to his absolutely terrifying horror debut, Hereditary. Part straight up horror, part The Wicker Man, and part anthropological study, Midsommar seems to occupy many genres all at once. Aster himself called it a “break up” movie. But whatever genre Midsommar is, it is a brilliant, and at times deeply disturbing film.

Florence Pugh stars as Dani, a young woman trying to heal in the wake of an enormous tragedy. Dani follows her boyfriend, Christian, and his annoying friends to an important midsummer festival deep in the heart of Sweden. Christian and company are there partly to get high and have fun and also partly to study the unique, isolated culture for their respective theses. To say that they get more than they bargained for is an understatement. But Dani may just end up getting exactly what she needs.

Night of the Living Dead

George A. Romero’s 1968 zombie classic The Night of the Living Dead messed up the minds of late ’60s moviegoers as much as it messed with every horror movie that followed. Poltergeist

Before there was Insidious, The Conjuring, or a myriad of other “suburban family vs. haunted house” movies, there was Poltergeist. Taking ghost stories out of the Gothic setting of ancient castles or decrepit mansions and hotels, Poltergeist moved the spirits into the middle class American heartland of the 1980s. With a smart screenplay by no less than Steven Spielberg (and, according to some, his ghost direction), Poltergeist finds the Freeling family privy to a disquieting fact about their new home: It’s built on top of a cemetery!

You probably know the story, and if you don’t you can guess it after decades of copycats that followed, but this special effects-laden spectacle still holds up, especially as a thriller that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Fair warning though, if your kids have a tree outside their window or a clown doll under their bed, we don’t take responsibility for the years of therapy bills this may inflict!

Ready or Not

The surprise horror joy of 2019, Ready or Not was a wicked breath of fresh air from the creative team Radio Silence. With a star-making lead turn by Samara Weaving, the movie is essentially a reworking of The Most Dangerous Game where a bride is being hunted by her groom’s entire wedding party on the night of their nuptials.

It’s a nutty premise that has a delicious (and broad) satirical subtext about the indulgences and eccentricities of the rich, as the would-be extended family of Grace (Weaving) is only pursuing her because they’re convinced a grandfather made a deal with the Devil for their wealth–and to keep it they must step on those beneath them every generation. Well step, shoot, stab, and ritualistically sacrifice in this cruelest game of hide and seek ever. Come for the gonzo high-concept and stay for the supremely satisfying ending.

Sweetheart

And it’s not hard to see why. There is something a little strange about dozens if not hundreds of relative strangers all calling the same place “home.”

1976’s The Tenant is the culmination of Polanski’s obsession with communal living and in some ways is the creepiest. Polanski stars as Trelkovsky, a paranoid young file clerk who is on the verge of succumbing to the constant dread he feels. Things are exacerbated when Trelkovsky moves into a Parisian apartment and discovers the previous occupant killed herself. What follows is a tense and trippy exploration of fear itself.

Under the Shadow

This recent 2016 effort could not possibly be more timely as it sympathizes, and terrorizes, an Iranian single mother and child in 1980s Tehran. Like a draconian travel ban, Shideh (Narges Rashidi) and her son Dorsa (Avin Manshadi) are malevolently targeted by a force of supreme evil.

This occurs after Dorsa’s father, a doctor, is called away to serve the Iranian army in post-revolution and war-torn Iran. In his absence evil seeps in… as does a quality horror movie with heightened emotional weight.

Underworld

Available on: Netflix

No one is going to mistake Underworld for high art. That obvious fact makes the lofty pretensions of these movies all the more endearing. With a cast of high-minded British theatrical actors, many trained in the Royal Shakespeare Company, at least the early movies in this Gothic horror/action mash-up series were overflowing with histrionic self-importance and grandiosity.

Take the first and best in the series. In the margins you have Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen portraying the patriarchs of warring factions of vampires and werewolves, and a love story caught between their violence that’s shamelessly modeled on Romeo and Juliet. It’s ridiculous, especially with Scott Speedman playing one party. But when the other is the oft-underrated Kate Beckinsale it doesn’t matter.

The movie’s bombast becomes its first virtue, and Len Wiseman’s penchant for glossy slick visuals, which would look at home in the sexiest Eurotrash graphic novel at the bookstore, is its other. Combined they make this a guilty good time. Though we recommend not venturing past the second or third movie.

Jordan Peele’s debut feature Get Out was a near instant horror classic so anticipation was high for his follow-up. Thanks to an excellent script, Peele’s deep appreciation of pop culture, and some stellar performances, Us more than lives up to the hype.

Placing Reign over my shoulder, Robyn is again being unfair and just loves listening to her own voice. Locking my car as I made my way to the home, I can literally hear Robyn outside this door “and where have you been mom? Seriously, I called you” rolling my eyes walking up the steps “here we go” I said to myself “I just needed some time to myself; I didn’t need anyone in my ear Robyn. That is all, I am back now so stop shouting. What is all the commotion outside I could hear you from here” placing Reign down on the couch, she is tired. Placing Reign on her side as I sat down on the edge “oh just Maurice hates the poor and I argued with him about it, that is all, no big situation at all. He is a stuck up drama queen, I can’t be bothered to deal with him” taking Reign’ shoes off “whatever Robyn, keep talking. Says the woman in her million dollar home in New York be quiet” Reign’ feet are all sweaty in these shoes “mom, he was so rude. He didn’t want anything because some poor people made it, he complained right from the start, shall we take a bodyguard, shall we not wear anything expensive. And then he made my family! My family, feel like shit for being poor, how is that even right? His pussy ass couldn’t even tell some kids off” placing Reign’ shoes on the couch “Robbie, calm down. Stop it now” turning while sat on the couch so I can see Robyn’ flustered face, she is just boring “you’re a hypocrite, fine whatever. You’re down for the people, I am not so what. You are just doing the most, I don’t care what you say or what you feel, I will never go back there, ever. Take it as you like. You are the same woman waltzing around with people with money, you are living with a maid and a fucking bodyguard yourself. You are disrespecting my life when you are fucking living it too, ok?” Terry looks so displeased, she just sighed out heavily “I didn’t want the maid!! You fucking bought it, like you do with everything. You are wrong Maurice, accept it, you are wrong. I felt it, I felt awkward and I know they did too. Stood there like a fucking plank of fucking wood watching with such a face on, they were nice to you” getting up from the couch “I wasn’t wrong, it’s not a good place and I said what I said. I am trying with you, I fucking tried!” why won’t she accept I tried “tried!? You should have stayed here, you’re only happy on your throne, your dad did the worst job with you” walking over to Robyn slowly “and still, you’re going to be in your Million dollar home” I stood in front of Robyn “at the end of the day you’re still going to be flying back in a private jet, this shit is irrelevant because your life is not the same, now lower your tone” Robyn mean mugged me “fuck you! Why are you even in this home, you hear this mom. He said I came here didn’t I, making out even this home is beneath him, why stay here?” rubbing my chin “you right, but seeing as my daughter is here I will be here” I said “same room you’re standing in when didn’t want her, right?” I knew that was coming, nodding my head “you’re predictable, you know what. I will go” I can’t be bothered; it will be low blow after low blow from both of us.

“Maurice” Robyn said, I don’t want to hear it anymore. I can find anyone in the Hollywood Hills that will take me in anyways. Dragging open the door “where exactly are you going to go?” banging the door shut as I got my phone out from my pocket, jogging down the steps as I unlocked my car. Diddy will let me use his crib, tapping on his name as I got into my car, I am honestly not going to argue about this to her “Maurice, the man himself. Not like you to call me out of the blue, I guess this ain’t no business dealing” he said down the phone, I chuckled “not exactly, I just need to use your crib in the Hollywood Hills?” putting the car engine on “you know me, you always can. When did you ever need to ask, Quincy is there so just go. You family” putting the car in reverse as I drove back slowly “thank you, this is why I called you first. I knew you got me always, don’t tell Quincy is throwing a little something?” he always doing that “you know how he do, my boy always got a party to throw. But I will let him know you are coming but I have my invite my nigga, my invite to the kings party for the takeover huh” my dad is out here inviting everyone “well I am sitting in the throne with rest of the black kings, that’s how we do. But I will speak to you later, I am driving right now and I ain’t connect it to the car yet so I will call you and tell Quincy to relax. I don’t need that shit around“ I laughed down the phone “I can’t control him, but I will speak to him, be cool” disconnecting the call. I didn’t even want to go but I can’t even believe she made that noise; she made that noise about the moment when I was in a bad place. I am not happy, talking about Maurice. Fuck that, I am annoyed.

The gate opened up as I drove into the mansion, I mean shit is beautiful here, now this is me “Big M!” Quincy said, revving my car as I parked at the side of the Ferrari “it’s been a while” putting my car in park “a while? You thirty now, I saw you and you was in your twenties” getting out of the car “I blinked and I literally aged, family” hugging Quincy “good seeing you, who you with here?” I hope he isn’t having a party; I just don’t want no trouble. Just somewhere to lay my head “some of my friends, some girls. Just a little get together” locking my car door as I walked with him into the home “my dad called and said that Maurice is coming, I am so fucking hype you here. It’s been years! I remember I used to sleep in your home here” I laughed remembering “you mean you was asleep on the floor; I would be walking around in the morning and your ass is on the floor asleep. But it was good, we had fun but good looking. This place is even better now, the renovation was needed pretty much” seeing some new dudes, I don’t know who these are “who are these anyways?” I asked “so this is Cyn, aye. This is Maurice, or Big M, or to me my brother. But Big M was named after what?” I am trying to think now “it was that night, when I got that delivery, and that nigga called me Medicare, the crib was full of all the drugs, I had every drug in that crib. But y’all can call me Big M or Maurice, not Medicare please” Quincy busted out laughing “this nigga threw the best parties, every nigga was there but this is Cyn, and this Lil M” Quincy laughed which made me laugh “are you my son, you light skinned enough to be my son, little fucking M” I cackled “y’all niggas playing me” the kid said but he sound like he ain’t even hit puberty yet.

There is a few girls here, they ain’t coming near me and I ain’t going near them so we good “you passed that now?” Quincy placed the bag of weed on the table “way passed it, you and I both know I have partied enough to question why I am alive now. So we doing lowkey parties now, what is this?” I pointed at the little group around the pool “I arrived here yesterday, but if you want to throw a party we can do it” shaking my head “I was just asking, I am all good with that” getting my phone out from my pocket, Robyn is calling me but I can’t be bothered to hear her at all “I am playing, I am happy for you. We joke and stuff, but you done so good, I flew out for you actually. Your big day, nigga we all are coming out for you” I didn’t even know this “that is dope to hear, not going to lie. You think that shit is fake, you know this famous life. But you do meet good people, yo Cyn. That Spain tan done left me” captioning the picture ‘Hollyweird’ posting the picture “what we saying today Big M” looking up at him and laughed “Big M with my nigga Quincy, we just vibing in Hollyweird, we got little M over there. We just vibing, and Shad, if you know the location then come up for a drink” Quincy busted out laughing “we living” he stopped recording “Shad is going to be running here, watch” Shad is like some groupie nigga that made a name for himself, he always was every party I been too here, I think he had an obsession over me.

Sitting down on the chair “can’t sleep?” my mom said “I am tired but then I’m not, he got me angry. I didn’t want to say it, but I did but I didn’t mean it. Mom he was so rude, he literally stood there like they were shit, he made them feel awful. I know they was feeling because I was, I had to go. And then he is acting like some asshole for what? They are my family, they don’t have money, what does he want? Not everyone is rich” shaking my head “I don’t want to be involved Robyn, he is acting how he was bought up like you are acting like you was bought up, you have seen struggle, he hasn’t. I am not taking anyone side because he could have acted better, but also you could see it from his side too. You both need to talk, not argue. I feel like this home is a curse, I am sick of it Robyn. I want to move, how can there be so much bad luck but how was it baby? Are you happy?” My mom asked “I am happy but now I am upset, Maurice is god knows where. I called his phone, but he disconnected it, I didn’t mean to say it. I just want to know he is ok; I want him to know I will see them. They are not bad people, he is taking it all wrong” I am so stressed out “let him have space, try again tomorrow. Did you see his grave?” nodding my head “I cried, it was emotional. I was upset about that, then I was upset that Maurice was not liking it at all. They are not us; I mean they not even me. Yes, I saw, well they told me they have guns, but they have it for their own protection. I don’t know, I didn’t want him to walk out” I feel bad now, I really do.

“I guess he is ok” I said after seeing the post he has made “what makes you think that?” my mom asked “he is with the people he likes, the rich. He posted on social media, but he ignored my call” I want to make up with him but now he’s annoyed me even more “you know what to do, let things cool off. Text him, tell him that you would like him to come here so you both can talk. I am not going to be involved in this, but emotions are high, I just want you both to be ok. Least we know he is ok, that is all we need to care for” placing my phone on the table “but I honestly can’t take the fact he feels that way mom” I don’t think I can “Robbie, listen to me. You love him, let’s start there. You both need to come to a solution, it can done. Sleep on it and think of something. I will take Reign out with me. Or go back to New York, I have had enough because California is no good to you and him. This home!” my mom huffed out “I am going to sleep” rubbing my face shaking my head, he was rude and I am not that but I didn’t mean to say that to him either, my anger and frustration got the better of me.

Bela Lugosi Is (Un)Dead

Los Angeles is the home of entertainment, the beach, and even some specters that haunt some places that might make you feel like you’re in a classic horror movie. The place is known as the “City of Angels” might be filled to the brim with the ghosts of ages past. Especially those who have once graced the silver screen or even your TV screen at home.

Today, the city is best known for the bright lights, big stars, and the Walk of Fame that pays homage to many who have made a name for themselves in entertainment. But is there a spirit of some celebrity hanging around their star?

We may not be able to answer that question definitively, but what we can do is point you to the places that might.

With that, join us as we take a look at the Top 10 Most Haunted Places in Los Angeles.

10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery

First on the list is the cemetery that is the final resting place of many celebrities. With names like Mal Blanc, Fay Wray, Gary Golden and more, a stroll can quickly turn into a game of “you name it, they’re probably here”.

One of the known hauntings that most visitors have recounted was the sound of a woman crying by the lake that is located on the grounds of the cemetery. Some have said that the woman may have been that of Virginia Rappe. Rappe was a silent film actress who passed away in 1921. Her death was said to be linked to a fellow film actor named Fatty Arbuckle. While Arbuckle was cleared in the connection of her death, some historians beg to differ.

Many visitors have often found figures and apparitions milling around the cemetery grounds, with most of them wearing clothing from the periods of when they were still alive. So it may not be unusual to see a specter dressed like they were from the 1950s.

9. Hollywood Pantages Theatre

When charmed businessman Howard Hughes owned the infamous Pantages Theatre, he built a door that connected his office directly to one of the theater balconies, where he would go to think in the dark. Hughes’s ghost is a notorious workaholic, and is said to be seen in his former office on the second floor.

According to legend, during the restoration in 2000, people said they saw a man stepping off the balcony, walking along the scaffolding, and standing over a worker to inspect his work. When the guy turned to ask the man what he wanted, the figure vanished.

The Pantages is also host to a female presence who died during a show in 1932. Apparently, during a cast recording, microphones were set up in the theater and they heard someone singing in the mic when no one was on stage. Some say the woman who died was an aspiring singer who’s living out her unrealized dreams of performing at the Pantages.

8. The Culver Studios

The studio complex where such legendary Tinseltown films as Gone with the Wind and Raging Bull were filmed was built in 1918 by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince. Ince died in 1924, after falling ill on newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst’s yacht during a star-studded cruise and dinner, celebrating Ince’s 42nd birthday. While the official cause of death was listed as heart failure, legend has it that Ince was actually shot and killed by a jealous Hearst, who was supposedly aiming at (and missed) Charlie Chaplin, who had eyes for Hearst’s mistress Marion Davies. Some say Ince’s ghost still shows up for work at his beloved former studio, and can be seen and heard walking through walls and criticizing management.

7. The Queen Mary

Famous for its Halloween event, Dark Harbor, but the Queen Mary in Long Beach is certifiably haunted according to the countless visitors who claim to hear voices and rattling chains during tours and overnight stays. The Queen Mary certainly has a past that’s ripe for modern-day hauntings. She started life as a luxury liner, setting forth on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, in 1937, and hosting everyone from Bob Hope to Winston Churchill. But when WWII began, the Queen Mary was drafted into service as a ferry ship, carrying thousands of troops into battle areas. The fancy lady was stripped of her chic facade, painted a camo grey and dubbed the “Grey Ghost.” After years of service in war, and at her majesty’s whim, the Queen Mary was eventually sold to a tour operator and sent to retirement in Long Beach, where she’s been a floating hotel and event spot since 1967. According to the late psychic and ghost hunter, Peter James, who led tours around the Queen Mary, almost all areas of the ship including the second class pool deck and engine room 13 are known to be haunted.

6. The Haunter Forest and Cobb Estate

Avid hikers will recognize this spot as the Sam Merrill trailhead, “a quiet refuge from people and wild life forever”—so reads the dedication on the cobblestone gate of the Cobb Estate. But to ghost hunters, it’s the Haunted Forest.

The sparse forest didn’t seem so haunted until the 1950s, when the Marx Brothers purchased the land and temporarily saved the dilapidated mansion from destruction—in the process turning it into a favorite haunt for squatters and ne’er-do-wells.

Today, you’re more likely to find curious teens at night wandering around what’s left of the house’s foundation; though ghost sightings are non-specific, many report ghostly noises on the surviving staircase and the feeling that they’re being watched in the dimly lit forest.

5. Griffith Park Old Zoo

A lot of people who may have heard or seen spirits will describe them as a man, woman, or child. But not every spirit might be of human form. The Old Zoo located in Griffith Park might be such a place where the spirits of even unhappy captive animals may be heard or possibly seen at night. By the daytime, it’s a really popular picnic area where friends and family can hang out and enjoy the day.

This was the first-ever zoo to be established in Los Angeles. And it was home to many lions, bears, monkeys, and several other animals. If you want to check out a place at night they might not be a walk in the park for the faint-hearted, this could be something to check out.

4. “The Entity” House

The Entity House might just look like some ordinary house located smack dab in the middle of suburban Los Angeles. But the home is known for having a story that was published into a book (and later adapted into a horror film that earned the house its name). The house was believed to the be sight of a series of hauntings with one victim recalling so many stories of each haunted happening.

While the story of “The Entity” may seem to live on forever in books and movies, the home may still have a story of its own to tell of things never been told. Are there spirits still haunting the home? What other stories that have yet to be heard that may have never been revealed in either the book or film adaptation? We will discuss the history of the home and the stories that have given it the reputation of being one of the most haunted places in all of Los Angeles.

3. Beverly Hills Bermuda Triangle

Even in the trendy neighborhood of Beverly Hills, there’s always a place that has some kind of strange presence. This part of 90210 is no stranger to some weird things. Billionaire and aviation enthusiast Howard Hughes was said to have crashed into a few homes in the neighborhood. Fortunately, Hughes survived the crash.

However, this area was also the site of a couple of high-profile homicides. One of them was the murder of Bugsy Siegel in 1947. Nearly sixty years later, a Hollywood publicist named Ronni Chasen was shot while driving in her car. She later died shortly afterward when she collided into a light pole as she attempted to flee the scene.

Over the years, some celebrities who came across this part of LA often found themselves in weird, if not, near-death situations. One such case was when musician Jan Berry of the 1960s group Jan and Dean was nearly killed in a car crash while driving and turning a sharp curve.

2. Hotel Roosevelt

Legend has it that the ghost of Marilyn Monroe still haunts her old stomping grounds. Until a few years ago, there was a famous mirror in the lobby where people would take pictures and claim they could see Marilyn’s reflection above them. The full-length mirror that once hung in Monroe’s poolside suite, and then in the lobby where it has since been removed. On the ninth floor, you can hear the late actor Montgomery Clift—who lived in suite 928 for three months while filming From Here to Eternity—practicing on his trumpet. During their stay, many guests have asked the hotel staff to tell the guest in the next room to stop playing in the middle of the night, only for the room to turn out to be vacat. What’s more? Lights and faucets are known to turn on and off on their own and the switchboard gets calls from vacant rooms.

1. Bela Lugosi’s Apartment

Bela Lugosi was another one of the acting greats in the horror film genre. For those that don’t know, his famous role was Dracula. It was known that Lugosi would always visit his favorite cigar shop every day on Hollywood Boulevard. When he died, the mortician could not have told a crazy story like the one of what happened while driving Lugosi’s body to the funeral home.

The funeral procession was supposed to go towards the cemetery in Culver City. However, the horses that were carrying the coffin had started to fight the driver. The driver wanted the horses to go right, however, the horses drew the hearse to the left. The horses went through oncoming traffic and down the boulevard. Turns out, Lugosi had gone daily to buy cigars and read the newspaper on Hollywood Boulevard. The horses stopped right in front of the shop that he frequented.

Some have said that Lugosi’s spirit may have played a role in that apparent incident. Possibly as a way to say goodbye to the place that he called home for much of his acting career. But ultimately, no one would ever be able to explain what really happened.

Ray, Zero and Jonah proposing to the MC:

Ray:

Ray’s proposal came on a mundane sunny day, out of the blue. Spontaneously, naturally, as if it were the only obvious thing to do at that exact moment.

It was a Sunday, and you both had a late start to the day, Ray’s morning meeting being postponed for a reason or another and you feeling too lazy to get up. You snuggled together on the bed, both of your bodies basking in the tender sun rays seeping through the curtains. Your head was resting on Ray’s bare chest, your hands drawing senseless patterns on his muscular abdomen. His head was leaning on yours, emerald eyes affectionately gazing at you as he lazily threaded his slender fingers through your hair, sending delicious shivers along your whole body.

You both cuddled closely for a while, when Ray started dropping soft kisses on your forehead, cheeks, lips and down your neck until he reached your bare chest. His kisses turned more teasing and open-mouthed as he licked and nipped at the sensitive skin there, his hands coming up to remove the sheets off your naked body and caressing your thighs, drawing closer and closer upwards. You softly loaned, relaxing your muscles and allowing your lover to shower you in kisses and touches, already anticipating more pleasure to come, when the soft noise of a familiar bell echoed in the room, and then Belle was jumping on top of Ray’s head, meowing in protest.

You both halted in your movements and stared at each other for a few seconds, before exploding in a heartfelt laughter. You extended your hands and gently picked up Belle to cradle her in your arms, lovingly cooing at her.

Ray slowly parted his body from yours, feeling slightly disappointed that he was stopped, but not really angry as he gently smiled at you both.

He gazed at you as you tenderly kissed Belle’s nose and giggled as she tried to stop you with her pink paw, and his breath suddenly hitched in his throat.

It was as if all of his feelings of love, respect and pure affection towards you all melted within his chest and they were ready to burst at any second, and it finally hit him.

He wants to spend the rest of his life with you.

He wants to wake up everyday with you by his side, hear your beautiful laughter echo in his ears and feel your warm skin under his fingertips. He wants to taste your awful cooking and argue you with over stupid things just so he can make up with you with a kiss and a piece of chocolate. He wants and he wants and he wants and the list just keeps on going endlessly.

Ray simply wants you to be in his life, forever.

“Would you marry me?”

The words were out of his lips before he could even register what he was saying, but Ray was sure that it was his heart speaking at that moment. The words simply felt right.

You stared at him, mouth agape in shock at the unexpected proposal, not even noticing when Belle slipped out of your hands and jumped soundlessly into the floor, momentarily forgotten.

Your face washed blank with confusion and every muscle of your body just froze. Ray laughed, his voice light and happy and so, so dear to you, and said: “You look so silly staring at me like that! Close your mouth or flies will go inside.”

Ah, your brain finally registered, this was the man you love asking you to spend eternity by his side. How could you ever refuse?

Shoving the blankets around you, you threw yourself at Ray who hastily caught you in his arms. Before he could utter a word, he felt hot tears falling on his shoulder, and your voice, firm and so full of affection resounding in his ears:

“Yes, yes, yes!!”

Ray closed his eyes and smiled.

Zero:

While Zero’s proposal was not exactly impulsive nor spontaneous -he did plan it out a few months beforehand- your lover still kept it affectionately natural, tenderly simple and special, a proposal of a lifetime, only fit for you.

It was on one of those spring days with a kiss of coldness that somehow heightened the warm rays of the sun that Zero requested a day-off and took you on a short trip to the outskirts of the Red Territory to a field of flowers.

The beautiful meadow stretchered as far as the eye can see, colorful flowers ornamented its surface, dancing lightly under the refreshing breeze.The air was deliciously flavored with the fragrance of each of these dazzling blossoms, your nose easily picking out your favorite scent of jasmine. The azure sky above-head was tranquilly empty but for a few fluffy clouds, drifting slowly here and there.

Zero gently smiled at you as you swept your eyes around the field in amazement, relief washing over his senses at the success of his first step. He tenderly took your hand, and intertwined your fingers together before leading you deeper into the field, until you reached the soft blankets and the covered basket prepared beforehand by Zero. Once you spot the picnic items, you turn your delighted face towards your lover, clearly pleased with the surprise.

Zero ushered you to sit down on the blanket before he pulled up a neat bouquet of vibrant sunflowers, gently offering it to you. He watched in fondness as you cradled the lovely flowers that you rival in beauty between your arms, gladly accepting the tender peck you later placed on his cheek as a thank you.

After came the food, the key element to please a gourmand such as you. Golden and crisp Cubano sandwiches accompanied a classical Stuffed Focaccia and a Spring Greens Caesar salad with pickled shallot. The desert was soft and gooey coffee and walnut cupcakes which never fail at making you sigh in satisfaction.

After lunch, you both lay down on your backs, hands never leaving each other, staring at the calming sky. The moment of truth was slowly approaching as you start to drift in a light sleep, lulled by the delicious food and the nice breeze playing with the flowers around you, a content smile on your lips. Zero checked for the million time the velvet box residing in his pocket, and opened his mouth to finally utter those four words he desperately rehearsed over and over again for the past few months, but nothing came out.

His heavy heartbeat echoed in his own ears and he felt cold sweat trailing on his back, crippling fear sneaking in and seizing his heart, squeezing it between its clutches. For a few seconds, Zero couldn’t breathe.

‘Are you even worthy of her?’ the ugly demons that the Ace of Hearts fought with every single day of his life viciously awakened and whispered to him. ‘Can you even make her happy? Someone like you, who is nothing but an empty shell will do nothing but make her cry and disappoint her.’

Zero shook his head in denial, but the heinous voices did not stop. ‘You do not deserve to bask in the sunlight, Zero. You will only taint her with your darkness if you remain by her side. Leave her if you truly wish her happiness.’

The light was slowly starting to fade away from Zero’s eyes when you unconsciously stirred by his side, tightening your hold on his hand and forcing him back into reality once again.

The scene which greeted him after he exited the horrible darkness residing in his heart was you, eyes still closed in the middle of the dazzling flowers, his hand still in yours, and the world around you gentle and warm. Zero, perhaps for the first time in his life, felt as if it was time to let go of the past. It was time to forgive himself.

“Would you marry me?”

The long-awaited words soon echoed in the empty field, the wind carrying the teary yet joyful “Yes!!” that followed right behind.

Jonah:

Jonah planned this marriage proposal for more than three months, earnestly going through each and every detail down to the second, checked and rechecked over and over again until there was nothing left to chance. He obsessively and personally chose every object and every person involved in the process.

From he location, a splendid manor owned by the Clemence family in the heart of the Red Territory, to the expensive and extremely famous orchestra which will be playing the music. The food was prepared by the most talented chef in all of Cradle, the menu tasted by Jonah himself and changed multiple times until the Queen of Hearts was fully satisfied with every item on it. The personnel, who will be serving you dinner, were handpicked by Jonah and approved by Edgar as both harmless and efficient. Your outfit, a gift also prepared by Jonah, was a customized, one-of-a-kind empire waist dress, sewn with the finest silk and ornamented with gorgeous sapphire and lavish topazes.

Everything was lush and grand. Jonah spared no expense in order to organize the most stunning, sublime and perfect marriage proposal, worthy of your approval. A proposal fit for the future Mrs. Clemence.

The fateful night soon arrived and Jonah manged to convince you that you were heading for a certain party that his family was hosting, claiming that the dress code was extremely strict. Although you were still suspicious of the extremely expensive dress you were offered, a dress fit for a queen, you joked to Jonah as you fixed your make-up in front of the mirror, you still accepted Jonah's made-up lie and went ahead with his plan, unaware of his true objective.

When the carriage stopped in front of the mansion chosen for the night, Jonah helped you descend and offered you his arm, which you gladly took. In order to reach the estate’s entrance from the main gate, you had to cross a vast garden, impeccably trimmed and taken care of, you noted as you both walked together on the marble pathway, lit by the faint moonlight.

Jonah’s heart was beating too fast, he felt it almost trying to escape from his rib-cage, his frazzled nerves jumping all together, and all in different directions. Jonah swallowed the lump formed in his throat and tried his best to reason with himself. A lavish dinner followed by a romantic dance before he finally utters the words he’s been desperately practicing. Easy enough, right?

I can do it, Jonah thought to himself with his fists clenched, and turned around to tell you that the entrance was near, only to find you few meters behind him, crouched on the ground, heedless of your expensive dress touching the floor.

“Darling?” Jonah curiously called out as he retraced his steps and made his way back to you, wondering what held you back.

Once he reached you, he extended a hand and helped you up, slightly bending down to see the object that caught your eye. Nestled in your palm was a tiny yellowish-orange rock which you were poking with one finger, gazing affectionately at it.

Jonah’s confusion did not dissipate, and he wondered why on earth would you get out of your way to purposely pick up a normal rock, with no unique features.

Noticing your lover’s puzzled gaze, you softly laughed and tilted your head to the side, bringing up the small rock closer to your chest.

“Don’t you think it looks just like your eyes?” You gently whispered, and Jonah’s breath hitched in his throat, his heart melting within his chest.

What only seemed to him a dull, mundane rock was in your eyes something that reminded you of him. That went to show just how much you thought of him to the point of seeing a part of your lover in everything around you.

Jonah dropped his gaze to the ground feeling hot tears gathering behind his eyelids and clutched at his chest, harshly biting his lower lip.

Oh God, I love her so much...

All of his plans fell into the water at that instant. Jonah carelessly discarded all the fancy food, elegant music and professional staff waiting for you only few meters away, and dropped to one knee, pulling out the ring box from his pocket.

Thar moment, where your gaze was full of love for Jonah and his chest full of love for you was the perfect moment to propose. No expensive dinner under the candlelight could ever compete.

Jonah looked up at you, one hand covering your mouth and the other still tightly holding the rock and saw his future in your eyes.

He saw the strong and capable woman he fell in love with, the woman who accepted him with all of his flaws and opened her heart to him, never attempting to change him to her own tastes. The woman who taught him that it’s okay not to be perfect at all times, that it’s okay to make mistakes, that it’s okay not to be okay, and still be loved despite all of his weaknesses.

He saw the love of his life who stood by his side in the bad moments just like in the good ones, the one who supported him and never left his side when the whole world was against him. The woman who believed in him when no one else did and when no one else would. The woman whom he will love, no matter what happens.

“Would you marry me?”

Nothing felt more right than those words.

The quiet night soon echoed your loud and elated “Yes!” as you jumped into Jonah’s arms.

It’s October aka Spooky Season! I love Halloween and I love fall, however I am the BIGGEST chicken in the world (specifically when it comes to ghosts/paranormal stuff). I can’t watch scary movies. The last time I was in a haunted house was 6th grade and I cried the whole time. We went to Fright Fest at Six Flags last year and I was literally so scared even before any of the actors came out I felt like I was going to puke all day. This is an actual depiction of me:

Since I am such a big giant baby, I thought I’d share some of my favorite non-horror, yet still a little spooky or adrenaline pumping books, for other book loving chickens. Most of these are thrillers, some are fantasy. In addition to a tiny summary I’ll add the goodreads link to each book!

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

A reporter is sent back to her old town (where her mother and half-sister still live) to cover the murders of two young girls

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

A man’s wife goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary and he struggles to prove his innocence as the cops close in.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

A girl survives her brothers satanic killing of her sisters and mother and searches for the truth of what actually happened that night.

There’s Someone in Your House by Stephanie Perkins

Makani Young’s classmates are being brutally murdered one by one. She thought she was safe in Nebraska but her past might be catching up with her. (Bonus spooky because there’s a Halloween festival and haunted corn maze)

Two Can Keep A Secret by Karen M. McManus

Ellery and her twin brother return to their mother’s small town of Echo Ridge, where their aunt went missing when she was 17. Five years before a homecoming queen was murdered at the famous Muderland Park, and now someone is threatening a repeat. (Bonus spooky because the characters literally work at Murderland).

You by Caroline Kepnes

The Netflix series was based on this book. An obsessive, stalker, bookstore clerk formulates a plan to get his dream girl to be his girlfriend.

Shadow Falls Series by C.C Hunter

5 super easy to read books. Kylie gets shipped off to a camp for troubled teens, although its not exactly what it seems. Shapeshifters, fairies, werewolves, vampires, etc. You name a fantastical creature, this book probably has it.

The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

Violet is able to locate the bodies of murder victims by hearing the echoes they leave behind, which can be matched with the imprints they leave one their murderers. Her and her best friend attempt to use her powers to find a serial killer terrorizing their town.

The Skinjacker Trilogy by Neal Shusterman

Nick and Allie, two teens die in a car accident and find themselves trapped in a world in between life and death.

This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher

One year after a deadly party, five teens arrive at a deserted mansion hoping to win a $50,000 scholarship. Instead they are met with someone willing to kill in order to learn what actually happened and get revenge for the death of another student.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Audrey Rose Wadsworth studies under her uncle in forensic medicine. When women begin to turn up dead in the streets, she partners with her uncle’s apprentice, Thomas Cresswell, in order to solve the murders and bring the killer to justice.

Sims 4 Awesimsauce

Some of you may remember the Awesimsauce challenge. It originated with the sims 2. I believe @katwhispurrer and @engramplays were some of the origininators.

The Sims 3 version was adapted by me. So it felt like maybe I should adapt the sims 4 version as well. Huge thanks to Kasia and @gerbits

Here is the working model right now. If you have any suggestions please let me know!

Basic Rules

Standard legacy rules apply.

Like the original legacy, no cheats are allowed.

Limit of 2 children per generation. No trying to force twins or triplets.

Your heir must have a wedding party.

Sim’s last name must be related to the rainbow/color in some way (it can be as random and obscure as you would like).

Sim’s first name must be somehow related to the color assigned to that generation.

Each generation is based on a different color and the color must be present and obvious in some way (make-up, dress, hair color, house décor, etc.)

Each generation has a specific challenge(s) based on the color of that generation. When playing that generation please make sure you meet all parts of the challenge (when possible)!

Generation Challenges

Generation One

Color: Blue

Challenge: Depth and Stability

What is a building without a good foundation? Generation One is tasked with building a lasting foundation for all future generations. Specifically a house (with or without a foundation).

This generation HAS to have one of the traditional jobs. This can be an active job like doctor or scientist (Get To Work) but can not be Freelancer or Part Time! I’m also going to say no to vlogging. If you want your sim to be a musician they must follow the Entertainer career track.

By the time this generation hits elder they should have a ‘complete’ house. This means at least 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen (a large eat in kitchen is also fine).

For an added challenge why not tack on the Renovation Challenge by @simbeeps (might need to modify it slightly because of the job, but still fun!).

Also your founder must have either a family oriented or wealth oriented lifetime goal (to start, once they complete it, go do you).

Generation Two

Color: Orange

Challenge: Creativity

Orange is a bright and happy color. It is full of energy and can even convince the laziest person to get off their butt. It is even known to incite creativeness in even the most “un-creative people”. Thus for the orange generation it is all about creativity.

Money may only be made by novels/painting/music/woodworking or by the freelance career

This time they CAN be a vlogger if you want.

Must be at level 10 for one instrument. DJ can count towards this as well.

If you’re into it this would be a cool generation to open a gallery/restaurant.

Generation Three

Color: Charcoal

Challenge: Activity

Charcoal is the color of strength! This generation your sim wants to get SWOLE. Let’s hit the mats or something sporty like that.

OPTION 1: (Base Game Compatible)

To make money you have a choice between Athlete, Secret Agent, or Astronaut career path.

Your heir must have level 10 fitness skill. Also a level 10 wellness skill (spa day required).

Your heir must complete the body builder lifetime goal.

OPTION 2: (Strangerville Required.)

If you’re not into the whole athlete thing complete the Strangerville storyline! Saving a city is a def show of strength!

Or if you’re not civically inclined, pursue the Military career (don’t need to live in Strangerville but if you do, you could solve the mystery AND complete the Military career for double the fun!)

Generation 4

Color: Green

Challenge: Money, Money, Money

Green is the color of money, and this generation your sims are all about those sweet simoleons. It’s time to make sure this family has cash in the bank! It is in honor of the founder that we work hard (or hardly work? If you’re making bank, who cares!)

Reach Top of 2 Career Tracks. Business, Criminal or Tech are some really good themed options!

Must have ‘materialistic’ trait.

Klepto and Snob traits are also fun options.

Must have at least 100k in the bank by the time they reach elder.

For this I’m going to say it’s on top of what you already have. So when they become YA if they’ve got 60k in the bank then they need 160k when they become elder. This is 100k of their own making.

Definitely must complete one of the wealth aspirations now if you didn’t in gen 1.

Must also own another lot. It could be a business from previous gens, or you could just build and buy a park. I don’t care, man, just DIVERSIFY.

Generation Five

Color: Purple

Challenge: Royalty

In many cultures purple represents a position of royalty. In this generation your sims will be treated like royalty and have their needs met as though they were a king or queen. The dark days are over, now it’s time to sit back and enjoy life.

Good thing the previous gen worked so hard, because this generation can NOT make any money themselves.

Must fulfill at least one whim per day for each sim

Heir must not be forced to do any “chores” (washing, taking out the trash, scrubbing toilets). Those activities are meant for lesser sims.

If you have Parenthood Stuff, try and get your sim to have some negative personality traits like low self control.

Royal Sim parents only do the fun stuff with their children! I’m going to allow for toddler traits since most are done as play. I’ll leave potty training up to you. No learning boring things like saying please and thank you though!

Purple sims only play with their kids. If you want the next gen to learn to be they’ll have to do it on their own or from some other family members.

Must have a butler and nanny.

Generation Six

Color: Brown

Challenge: Down to Earth

Disgusted with the ways of the previous generation you have decided to return to the earth! This generation is looking for a simpler way of life that doesn’t come with all the opulence and waste of the previous generations.

OPTION 1: BGC

Only make money from harvest/dug up/foraged/fished items. You can sell them from inventory or set up a stall at the market.

If you have seasons you can also make money from Flower Arranging.

Must have full gardening skill as well as herbalism (outdoor retreat required)

Must complete one of the nature aspirations.

Must grow at least 1 of every kind of plant. This includes plants from other worlds depending on the EPs you have.

Gotta have that ‘Loves The Outdoors’ trait!

OPTION 2: Sulani (Island Living required)

Join the conservationist career track.

Still have to have the ‘loves the outdoors’ trait.

Clean up Sulani! That means get the island to level 3.

Generation Seven

Color: Yellow

Challenge: The Pursuit of Hope

Yellow can symbolize hope. What better way to represent that than the hope of setting out learning everything you can in the world. This generation is concentrated on their intellect.

Pick one of those knowledge based aspirations!

Yellow generation is all about helping others, so make sure they are reading to their kids, helping with homework and school projects.

It could be fun if this was the first generation to attend college, but that’s really up to you!

Must hit level 10 in logic, handiness, programming, and rocket science.

Also Archaeology if you have Jungle Adventure

Parenting if you have Parenthood

If you have Jungle Adventure and your heir fancies themselves as an Indiana Jones type of scholar why not complete the temple.

If you’re going this route make sure to get ALL the relics.

What use is being smart if you can’t show off? Build a seperate room in your home to act as a library. Display items you got from adventuring or just a lot of books.

Generation Eight

Color: Red

Challenge: Fiery Passion

It is no secret that red is the color of passion, of love and of explosive things. Those who love red are often extremely ambitious, but slightly reckless. This generation is all about living with heat and flying by the seat of your pants!

Must have either the Hot Headed or Jealous trait.

Siblings shouldn’t get along, big personalities often clash.

Must use either the rude or flirty introductions when meeting new people.

5 Lovers simultaneous lovers (Who don’t know about each other)

Must Woohoo in each kind of public location

At least one enemy! (or ten!)

Any money making path is available for this gen, things like secret agent, criminal, or law could be fun and on theme but aren’t required.

Generation Nine

Color: Pink

Challenge: The Glamour Life!

Only the most glamorous sims can wear pink! This generation is all about living the high life. If you’re the most glamorous sim in town then everyone should know your name.

Top Celebrity Status (Get Famous required)

Reach the top of the Entertainer or Fashion Stylist career (base game)

Acting (Get Famous)

Fashion photographer (Moschino)

Glamorous sims are the height of fashion! The heir will change outfits every other day.

This is generation nine, by now you should be living in the biggest house in town. Make sure you’ve got your mansion going!

Generation Ten

Color: White

Challenge: A Return to the Basics

It’s been ten generations since you started and now it’s time to return. Return to tradition and building a foundation for the next set of sims. Go back at complete generation 1’s challenges all over. You earned it.

Like mad. Like mad. Okay. How crack do we want these harem prompts, because I kind of want to ask for either of the Wen Brothers (Wen Xu or Wen Chao) and 16. Then for the ladies mianmian and 20?

20 FOR QUEEN MIANMIAN WHO SAYS ALL THREE: You leave the safety of your family’s home and go brave the dangers and adventures of the world. What do you seek - Love, Self-Fulfillment or Glory?

Once upon a time there was a little girl. A little powerful girl that could crack bricks with her tiny little fist. Her father – the one who discovered that fantastic ability of hers – happened to be a brickmaker. Her mother was but a humble garden-farmer, but she garden-farmed well and often the Luo's found themselves with a surplus of fresh vegetables and herbs.

So when the rain prevented her father's bricks from drying, but watered her mother's vegetables, and they grew in excess Father Luo would take his little girl to the market so that the two of them could sell ginger and watercress! To attract customers, little Luo would stand on the counter and smash bricks with her hand.

“Buy watercress from the little girl with the iron arm!” they would call out together and return home at night with their pockets filled with coin.

But little Luo, let's call her Mianmian, dreamt of a far more glamorous life. She had seen them after all in the marketplace; all those taoist cultivators, big and small running around dressed in the finest gowns, brandishing splendid swords going anywhere they wanted, eating whatever they wanted with their purses perpetually filled, and their hair glossy and silky, their perfect skin.

“Mianmian!” her father would say to her. “Look at me. I am but a humble brickmaker. My father when I was young laughed at me. He would say what a sunny job! Let's see what you will do when it rains! So I married a girl that could farm, and when it rains I eat my watercress soup and say thank you! Life is hard, don't seek to make it even harder!”

But little Mianmian would not give up on her dream. She smashed bricks harder than ever before until one day a lady cultivator approached her. She was short, and old, and resembled a nun, but the sword at her side revealed her wilder side.

“My, my!” she said. “In all of Tanzhou I don't think there is a stronger girl! Pray tell what is your name!”

“Ah, Florist lady, this one is not that strong. It's the bricks that are badly made!” her father laughed, because he feared his little girl would suddenly go away.

“As if!” Luo Qingyang screamed and smashed a brick on her face.

“AAA!” everyone in the market screamed in terror. “What did you do that for?”

“If I can't be a cultivator, I'd rather be nothing at all!” Luo Qingyang cried and rubbed the bump on her head.

“My, my, what a strongheaded girl” Lady Florist said.

And so even though little Luo's dad didn't want to see her let go, he had to at least let her visit Lady Florist in her mansion to practice the sword. Little Mianmian grew up to be a talented swordswoman. Balanced and strong, stubborn and kind. But still she craved many things the people around her did not understand.

“Mianmian, you can't always rely on the sun!” her father would mournfully say.

“I grew all I could, when will the nice things happen to me?!” She would ask her master.

“Nice things? What do you mean?”

“The really nice clothes! The travelling! The praises! The big mansion by the sea!” Mianmian explained.

“Oh well, for these things you have to get lucky! Or attach yourself to some noble lord. I can write you a letter of recommendation if you want.” Lady Florist said.

They pored over for hours together trying to find a suitable clan. “The Qinghe Nie are too far away, and they are not very big on praises.” Lady Florist said. “The Yunmeng Jian can be said to have the bestest fashions, but don't count on getting your own house in service of them. They were rangers once. The Gusu Lan definitely travel, they are very popular when it comes to exorcising ghosts in far off lands – but you have to wake up at five in the morning every day and I am not sure you can do that.”

Then after several hours Lady Florist said: “Well, how about the Lanling Jin, most of them are for show anyway, a true swordswoman like yourself will become quite famous in their midst! And when it comes to material needs, there is not a thing they can't afford. Whether its bribes or payments you will surely amass a little fortune of your own.”

Mianmian was enthused! She packed her mother's famous watercress soup, and all her things, along with the sword Lady Florist gifted her, and bid her teary eyed parents farewell.

“Mianmian!” her mother took her aside and said. “I knew from a young girl what it was that I wanted to do! I wanted to farm and cook. So I found a good steady man who couldn't always depend on the sun to take care of you. So when the time comes and you find yourself craving a little Mianmian of your own, find a good steady man who'll shed tears when he sees her grow up.”

Mianmian set off, and she was admitted alright to the biggest, most prosperous clan. For years she wanted for nothing, she made many friends, saw many places, earned lots of money...and then came the day you could no longer depend on the sun.

Because that sun had grown so big, and so mean that it threatened to burn all the land.

So she fought along many great cultivators and all of them together managed to bring down that evil sun. But all was not right, and all was not well, Mianmian began to think. The things she had once went after, didn't mean anything. It didn't matter how well someone was dressed if they were evil and mean.

And it didn't mean anything to travel all these lands if one couldn't learn a single new thing. Praises were empty and dangerous, and friends were not always very honest beings. As for big mansions at exotic locations, well was it worth it to isolate yourself from others, to live in luxury you and your own while in the world so many innocent people suffered for others' sins?

Without ever noticing she had outgrew those selfish needs that moved others to slander and kill. So one very sunny day, when she could not bear it anymore, she shed the fine clothes that set her apart, she left behind the exotic palace and all those who knew her, and took with her only what she had learned.

She walked for many days, and fought many monsters, doing noble deeds wherever they were needed, until she felt something like nostalgia for her mother's watercress soup. So once more her feet took her to what she most wanted in the world.

Her parents greeted her with tears in their eyes and asked to know what she had done with her time. Then after a while her mother said: “A cottage is up for sale at the end of the road. We can help you with the downpayment if you want. It's quite the nice place, there's even quite some space to install a chicken coop.”

“Ugh!” Luo Qingyang thought. “These guys don't get it!”

But she ate her soup and warmed her feet by the hearth. She even changed in those comfy pyjamas with her mother's needlework. And after a night's good rest she realized “If only there was someone to do these things for me, so when I come home from hunting monsters there is someone to take care of me!”

But these things were not mere transactions. Her parents loved her that's why they gave her everything...She bought that cottage after all, because it's always good to own some estate when there is a chance you will remain all alone in the world. And out she went at nights to hunt monsters again, because that was all she really knew how to do.

Luo Qingyang one morning was returning from such a night hunt, when her father's frivolous sun decided to hide behind some clouds and give its place to her mother's constant rain. She had no umbrella and was getting thoroughly soaked when a merchant invited her under his stall.

“It's pouring alright!” he said, and gave her some hot tea. “Are you perhaps a cultivator? I've seen you often travel this road to hunt monsters.” he said when he saw her sword.

“Yeah, I am sort of a hero of the Sunshot Campaign if you must know.”

“Wow!” he said stunned. “What's that like!”

“It's tough work. Being a cultivator is not at all all it's cracked up to be. The monster slaying part is easy, but getting what you want is tough. You might find yourself often without a person to turn when it's raining the most. And more often than not it's you that doesn't know what you want.”

“That sucks” the merchant said and remained silent, until the clouds parted again and the sun shone on them.

“Wait a minute!” the merchant said when she got up to leave. “Please, have this cape, you'll catch a cold if you walk all the way home in these wet clothes.”

She took out her purse to pay him, when he stopped her as well. “Please, have it as a gift! If it weren't for you our roads would be infested with monsters and no one would buy anything from me.”

“Cool, thanks!” Mianmian said and felt suddenly appreciated. “I live over there at the end of the road, I have a cottage of my own. You should drop by sometime! We'll make tea, I'll tell you all about moster hunting, the war!”

“Really?” the merchant awestruck said. “I'd love to!”

They waved hands and parted ways and Mianmian thought: “It's good to have it all.”
