You were in the midst of running through all the possible options of escape in your head when your thoughts were interrupted by the one voice you didn’t particularly want to hear.
“What is going on?”
Underneath Corazon, you stiffened.  You unwittingly caught Corazon’s gaze.  It was Doffy. Doffy had come out.  Was it the children?  Judging by their startled appearance, they were just as surprised.
Corazon eased up on his hold, and you sat up, brushing down your shorts and ignoring the grassy stains on your knees.
“There are better places to fuck,” Doffy said, arms folded over his chest, looking between you and Corazon.
You blinked, confused.  “What, that’s not—”
He turned his gaze to you, his mouth quirking up at the corner in warning.  “That’s not what?  Are you going to tell me, you and my brother were in the middle of something else?”
You swallowed.
When you didn’t answer, he smiled knowingly.  “Didn’t think so. Corazon’s a beast, isn’t he?”
Something like that.  In your defence, you wanted to argue that it was just because he was bigger.  But that was a terrible excuse.  Your father had taught you better, and so had Lao G.
“Corazon?” He shifted his attention to his brother.
You braced yourself for a response, weighing up on the risk you had taken in the first place.
But Corazon said nothing.  Doffy sighed—relief or something else, you didn’t know.  Just like that, Corazon had removed the worst of this outcome.
“Let’s continue this inside.”
That caught your attention.  “What?”
“I can feel the tension within you, it’s tighter than the bow on Baby 5’s head.  I know just what you need.”
The very idea wasn’t unappealing.  If anything, your womb was rejoicing. Arousal and other not so wondrous fluids spooled between your legs even as you followed Doffy back to the castle.
“You too, Cora.”
That surprised both you and Corazon.  “What?” you said sharply.
“I said there were better places to fuck, didn’t I?” Doffy looked over his shoulder at you, his smile a full-blown grin.
It dawned on you then what he intended.  The provoking grin dared you to contradict him, to confirm otherwise.  It dared you to tell the truth.  If you told him the truth, that you had sought Corazon out on purpose for a fight, you would have to face the blood law—regardless of whether you hurt Corazon or not.  It didn’t matter that you hadn’t used haki in the end.  It only mattered that you’d raised your hand to his one and only blood relative.
You looked at Corazon, but for once today, he wasn’t directly looking at you.
“But Doffy!” you protested.
“It’s nice to see you getting along with my brother,” Doffy drawled, ignoring the panic in your voice.  “Sharing is caring, they say.  I suppose if there was one person I’d share you with, it would be Corazon.  And he does look in need of some entertaining.”
You blinked in shock.  Every word he spoke registered.  But as important as the words that he said were, so were the words unsaid—Doffy only wanted to see you getting along with his brother, that regardless of what you were just doing with Corazon, the unsaid awareness that you both were indeed fighting, all would be forgiven so long as you allowed Doffy to share you with Corazon.

I have a new favorite book, The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty.
The main protagonist is a middle-aged woman, retired pirate, and cautious single mother. She's a devout and penitent Muslim, who wants nothing to do with magic and is every bit the unwilling hero (for a while, anyway).
I recommend it. It has beautiful prose, pre-Islamic folklore, queer representation and trans-representation (without the presumption of the author to explain what isn't hers to explain), and more pirates. The side characters are their own people and the story is told extremely well. I listened to the audiobook and the actors did a great job.
Trigger warnings: body horror, graphic depictions of violence and gore, mention of the threat of rape (it's only contemplated for two sentences, but it's striking), blackmail/extortion, discussions of slavery, and monsters (very cool monsters, but still, head's up).
Tumblr media
One content warning on Storygraph is "tr@nsphobia" (word censored so as to not incorrectly trigger the tag), except there is none. I wonder if some people think that mentioning the existence of a trans-character is tr@nsphobic. So it goes, I guess.

Character-Driven >>>>>>>> Plot-Driven
Any day. Any how. Any where.
I will not watch anything where characterization, representation and development is not pivotal.
I’m very particular like that. It’s why I can’t stand watching most TV shows of today. They lack character detail in favour of plot. But I’ve never cared for plot heavy material because too much goes on too soon and too fast that I cannot follow along with it. With character-heavy material, you’re able to identify with the characters and learn from them. That’s the whole point for me. I want to learn, not be entertained. And I will absolutely not care for plot if I don’t not care for the characters. I am adamant. And when I say “care for them” I don’t mean I have to like them. I might not like them but I’ll care for them in the way I would be interested in knowing who they are and what they’re all about, why they are as they are. If I am bothered about them I want to bother with them. There are many characters I dislike in TV shows that I genuinely am still invested in their story. There are many characters I like in TV shows where I might not be as invested in them. It all depends on how they’re written or portrayed and whether they develop or not.

love how Solar Opposites started out as a sitcom about two aliens who can't stand each other, stuck with their teenage clones (whom they also can't stand) & a toddler antichrist (whom they view as a sort of self-sufficient free-roaming hamster?) on a stupid planet they can't stand
and 4 seasons later it's a sitcom about a family of genderqueer aliens, headed by a gay couple in a happy & horny open marriage (with a graphic off-screen sex life, despite their canonical lack of genitalia?) teaching themselves to be okay parents to their 3 kids (whose Sci-Fi Antics now slightly-less-frequently revolve around wreaking havoc on human bystanders, and slightly-more-frequently revolve around alien-clone-sibling-bonding*), to the point that the central plot point becomes "We need to provide our toddler antichrist with a stable home environment."
(also the grumpy alien husband is too busy ingratiating his family with their suburban neighbors to even remember whom or what he dislikes. what is this show)

Can we see an episode with your akuma, Enchanted Florist? I would like to see what went down.
The whole point of my self-insert akuma Enchanted Florist is that she's easily triggered. I was working retail when I made her so she's meant to be transformed over any and all inane problems that any person in the customer service field have to deal with, which is why she's a re-occuring villain, like Mr. Pigeon.
If I made an actual episode, or pictured a canon episode in my head, it would barely feature the main cast at all and would just become a montage of Dumb Things that Customers Do that just akumatizes her over and over and over again.

As you grew closer to scent of food, you turned a corner, and bumped into someone.  You stumbled back in surprise.
“Sorry,” you apologised, looking up.
Tattoo under his eye, jester-like mouth.  And all those hearts.  You stilled, it was the one that Giolla had called Corazon.
He didn’t say anything, and it unsettled you.  You weren’t the type to ramble, let alone continuously chatter.  The thought had always irritated you.  But his silence made you uncomfortable, and you were still new to this place, and surely, even disgusting as they were, those executives, Trebol and Diamante had seemed chatty enough earlier.
“I was just looking for the dinner room.  It seems to smell good.  Are you heading there too?” you asked.
For some reason, as soon as those words fell from your mouth, you had the distinct feeling that you had said something wrong or your mere existence seemed to offend him.
Because Corazon just glared at you.
In the next breath he had you cornered against the wall, slamming his palm into the wall above your head.
You stiffened because for all your bravery, these people were still pirates.  And Corazon was just too close.  What had Giolla rattled about earlier?  She’d said something like, in spite of his apparent clumsiness, his inability to not set himself on fire, Corazon was skilled at his job.
He stared you down.  You were afraid, but you weren’t about to show it.  Defiantly, you stared right back, as if waiting for a strike to come.
You expected him to say something.  But there was another memory at the back of your mind of something Giolla had said earlier.
Corazon is mute.  A tragic accident.  And he’s young master’s brother.  His blood brother and the newly appointed Nidaime Corazon.
That must have been important to know that Corazon was Doffy’s brother.
But right now you just wanted food, and he wasn’t being very welcoming.  At all.
The intensity of his glare pinned you in place.  You weren’t sure if it was in your mind or from him, but there was a pressure pushing against you, that plucked at your fear, bringing it to the fore.  You felt your limbs shake and your heart beat rapidly in your chest.
And then it was as though he’d said it loudly, as clear as day, his eyes said, Fuck off.
You flinched.  Well, that was a first.  Neither of the other executives had bothered warning you away other than the initial half hearted one.  But this, this was definitely not half hearted.  For some reason Corazon was telling you to…fuck off…without even knowing a single thing about you.
How dare he?
You’d come here because you had nothing to lose. You’d come because this was your only way to survive.  This was your way to revenge.
So, stubborn as you were, you licked your lips, to moisten the dryness of fear, and said, flatly, “No.”

have we ever thought that maybe it's not a matter of the doctor doesn't need much sleep but more of, he chooses not to? and not in a quirky way? because i can totally see how a man ridden with guilt and ptsd can find it hard to willingly sleep all the more after we've all heard twelve's speech in the zygon inversion when he said "when i close my eyes"

(my semi-regular Monday poll is going to be a little different this time)
full disclosure: i am a filthy Homestuck, which some people have already guessed. Yes, yes, i know. Worst thing is, lately i've been bitten by an idea to create a Homestuck-inspired Life SMP project. But not that kind :P
what i'm thinking is a normal-ish Traffic SMP but with a reader-driven narrative, i.e. every few updates a poll or a "What will you do?" prompt will appear and allow you guys to decide the characters' actions
artsyle-wise i'd like to also borrow Homestuck's simplicity, mostly as a time saving measure. Here are a few samples of me trying it out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND SO, THE QUESTION IS
depending on the results i will either proceed with the idea, proceed but on a separate blog, or forget about it. Let's go

i loveee character-driven stories, what’s the plot??? doesn’t matter, give me 5 pages of a character’s internal conflicts, describe their emotional state and tell me about their feelings in details, also 20 pages of the characters relationship with each other, a chapter of the character’s backstory, tell me how they think, tell me their opinions and how they live and why the preferred lifestyle

I think the reason Amphibia's seriousness is so shocking for the kind of media it is is bc unlike a lot of other similar cartoons it just. doesn't lean into the supervillain/supernatural element as much for the seriousness. like it does but when you look at it on a level of "okay when were the most serious bits" it's not ALL "super high stakes fight that leads to tragic moments", it's also "a 13 year old bully just tried killing himself on screen" it's "another 13 year old just revealed they kidnapped their closest friends for two seasons because they were lonely" it's "10 year old reveals that his parents died when he was younger and he didn't think he was allowed to miss them" it's "main protagonist openly says she didn't love herself" it's "main protagonist becomes next in line to be god of all creation because she chose to be kind" it's "main antagonist lets himself become nearly obliterated because he chose to believe in change and loss at the request of his long-dead love" it's "but of the things you let go you'd be surprised what makes its way back to you" essentially I'm saying that Amphibia is about humanity as it always has been
