Staff Pick of the Week
My staff pick this week is a volume from the Childcraft series from W.F. Quarrie & Company. This is volume 14 of 14, and it focuses on Science and Industry. The W.F. Quarrie Company was also the publisher of the World Book Encyclopedia from 1919-1945, but that’s about all I could find out about the company.
The series is meant to be educational and fun for children, with other volumes featuring subjects like “Experience Stories and Animal Friends” and “Art and Music.” Unfortunately, we only have volume 14, but it is plenty cute and full of great pictures and illustrations. Today I’ve chosen to focus on the science half of science and industry and the color illustrations of fish, frogs, and turtles. The fish shown here are Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Eupomotis gibbosus), engaged in various fishy activities, including stealing worms off a fisher’s hook! The frogs are Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens) and are shown here as eggs, tadpoles, and adult frogs, one of which can be seen eating a mouse! The turtles are Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta), shown in the center “at their favorite sport, lazily basking on a waterlogged tree trunk.”

Cold Spell
Three years after the virus SARS-CoV-2 burst onto the scene, spreading like wildfire in a still-ongoing global pandemic, we are still learning how best to treat the disease known as COVID-19. Severely-affected individuals undergo long periods of sedation and artificial ventilation, and some are recovering consciousness unusually slowly. These individuals display reduced brain activity, in a stop-start pattern known as burst suppression, also seen in patients with heart conditions treated by lowering their body temperature. And in more surprising places... Extraordinarily resistant to oxygen-deprivation, painted turtles (Chrysemys picta, pictured) can survive months in ice-covered ponds with no oxygen, thanks to a suite of adaptations including reduced neuronal activity. COVID-19 patients struggling to breathe also experience low oxygen levels, and, combined with sedation, this could be triggering similar protective responses in humans. Inspired by processes in hibernating animals, this new perspective could suggest better ways to facilitate recovery after severe COVID-19.

Dancing Daisies Sea Turtle
Another beautiful day in Florida with lots of beachy fun inspiration! The beach is a crystal clear blue. Coastal living at it’s best! Sea turtles are a favorite here in Sarasota. We love to watch the babies make their way to the ocean.
