Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Rant

Warning. This article contains spoilers. Alas, this post is an enormous wall of text and consists purely from me complaining. Get the children away from the screen.

Okay, I’ll probably regret this later, but I’ll post this anyway. Years ago I used to be pretty vocal about my opinion, but these days I prefer to keep most of the negative opinions to myself. But I believe if I’d keep everything bottled up on this one particular matter I’ll simply explode.

I’m currently enthusiastically playing Like a Dragon/Yakuza series, which is now one of my favorite game series. Back at high school used to play first two games on PS2, and later there was Kurohyo on PSP, but didn’t get too far in any of them, decided save it for later, and this “later” has finally happened several months ago after listening to one pretty entertaining podcast about JPRGs. One of the hosts has totally sold me Yakuza: Like a Dragon (I’ve literally ran and bought it after listening the podcast). I’ve played it, loved it and almost cried my eyes out on the ending (seriously, if someone asks me how my ideal JRPG should look like, I’d say that’s the one).

After that I’ve beaten Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. I’ve really enjoyed this game in general, but comparing to its predecessor, while most of the gameplay issues were fixed, some story issues did arise. Story itself is far more simple and lacks memorable antagonists (Ebina was okay and Bryce was outright lame). Still, there were a plenty of interesting moments to keep me going, and I really liked the ending, which was extremely moving, the part before the ending credits I mean. And then this stupid love confession scene happened and completely ruined the mood for me. Seriously, it wasn’t funny, it was tasteless like in the worst romcoms.

And, well, here lies the main issue with Infinite Wealth for me - this poorly-written romance subplot between Ichi and Saeko, and how Saeko character is handled in this game in general. So, if you are the fan of her I suggest you to stop reading right here, right now.

First, I would like to point that, when Saeko was just an optional romantic interest in LaD it was perfectly fine, but in IW, where she became the designated love interest, the whole romance plotline became very forced and uncalled-for. In LaD they were simply on friendly terms with no indication of evident romantic interest, and in IW the whole “Ichi falling for Saeko” thing looks extremely out of nowhere. All interactions between them look artificial without real chemistry between characters. Seriously, every time Ichi says, that he loves her or have feelings for her, it sounds hardly believable, like he is trying to convince himself and the players. At moments like this I could almost imagine something like this:

RGG Studio staff: *gives Ichi the script* Start reading.

Ichi: But that’s a bunch of bullshit!

RGG Studio staff: *points a gun on Ichi* Start reading. Now.

To be honest, I’m not the fan of romance genre at all and I mostly view romance sublots in various media as a nuisance. Still I won’t deny that there are some romantic storylines I genuinely enjoyed and was rooting for the characters till the very end (like Alphen and Shionne from Tales of Arise or Oswald and Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere for example), but there are still very few of the quality romantic stories to my liking comparing to those, which are either okay or boring at the best, and unbelievably stupid or outright unhealthy (and stupid) at the worst.

Worst of all, that RGG Studio actually can write a decent romance subplot. And I believe that Yakuza 0 is a good example of this. There we have Goro Majima (who is my second most favorite character in the series, after Ichi) and Makoto Makimura (who belongs to one of my least favorite character archetypes-“damsel-in-distress”, but considering her condition and the fact that everyone is after her, she really does need help and protection). In their story there wouldn’t be a single “I love you” or “I have feelings for you” or any other needless words, they just go through many shit together and slowly develop feeling for each other, which is shown very subtly through finely directed cutscenes. They don’t get together in the end (which is pretty logical, considering everything, that’s happened), but this plotline gets pretty heartwarming conclusion in Kiwami 2. But if they actually did get together I wouldn’t mind at all, even though Makoto isn’t one of my favorites, simply because their story is well-written and makes sense.

Alright, back to Ichi and Saeko. Let’s start with the infamous “proposal-on-the-first-date” scene, I won’t deny that it was awkward as hell (I was like: “Ichi, please, just shut up.”), but Saeko’s reaction wasn’t one of the mature woman either. I would’ve understood her reaction if they’d barely knew each other, in that case it would’ve been perfectly natural. But they know each other pretty well by this point (three years, no less) and she knows that he tends to speak his mind and has zero experience with women. I believe, she could’ve always say something like:”Hold on, let’s not rush things.”, I’m sure he would’ve understand. But no, she just runs away and leaves him hanging. And when, thanks to Adachi and Nanba, Ichi realizes, what he did wrong, he goes and apologizes. Saeko seemingly accepts the apology, says that they are still friends, and that as a friend she will support him no matter what. And what Saeko does next? She ignores Ichi for a whole year. And when he loses his job and becomes pariah thanks to Tatara Channel, only Adachi and Nanba go and check up on him. When she finds out, she doesn’t even bother to send something like: “Are you okay?” or whatever. And that’s after all the crap they’ve went through in LaD. A “true friend”, nuff said.

Oh, and you know what’s rich? In her Drink Link (I did it only for the achievement and to see whether she actually expresses any remorse at all, spoiler-no) it is revealed that, the whole year she was ghosting Ichi, she was dating some obvious bastard, who was manipulating her into marrying him to get her money and business. Funny, how she didn’t see that until he went and said it himself. Another fun fact, that in some random dialogues she actually asks Kiryu and Nanba how Ichi is doing, only to add something like: “Not that I care.”. Seriously, her whole attitude towards Ichi is so fucked up and can easily be described as emotional abuse. If I were him I would’ve dismissed her after that year of ghosting and just forgot about her. And the last, but not the least, everyone either criticizes or mocks Ichi because of this stupid proposal, but no one criticizes Saeko for her craptastic treatment of him.

Also putting romance aside, I believe Saeko has nothing to offer as a character. In LaD she was an okay character, albeit with the little to zero relevance to the main plot. I believe RGG Studio has added her only for the sake of adding at least one playable girl in the party full of dudes to expand the audience, since Eri is an optional character and you can beat the game without even getting her in the team. Speaking of Eri, while she is totally unimportant to the main storyline, she is still much more likeable and fleshed out character than Saeko, and more useful in battles too.

In IW Saeko became much worse. As I see it, her portrayal is something of a strong and independent woman. And it does not withstand any criticism. Even in LaD there were some optional dialogues, were she is mocking other party members in a form of a joke. In IW she is even more immature. For example, remember how in LaD she refused to go with you in cabaret club ( I mean, where you can order a hostesses)? In IW Seonhee tags along with the guys in the same club (because, why not?), and Saeko decides that she is going too, even though she is not interested in the stuff. And there is more instances (all optional dialogues though), where someone does something, she clearly disapproves, but everyone else in party does, and she decides to do it too. I believe, that being strong and independent actually means having an opinion of your own and not caring about what others would think about you. While both Seonhee and Chitose really can be described as strong women, Saeko only seems like one, but in reality she is just pathetic. When it comes to main story in IW-she can be easily removed from all cutscenes, because most of the time she either all bark no bite (strong and independent woman, uh-huh) or just stands there. Looks like RGG Studio simply didn’t know what to do with her after LaD and wrote all this pseudo-romantic crap simply to justify her presence in IW. For me it sure didn’t work, I felt utterly disgusted with her the whole game. I wish they would just wrote her out entirely from the story. While in LaD she was only one non-optional girl in the party, in IW we have two more well-developed female characters, who, unlike Saeko, are actually important to the plot.

I’ve read somewhere that RGG Studio is currently working on the next installment in the series. I have no idea, what it’ll be about, but I really wish that they’d just drop the idea of getting Ichi and Saeko together for the sake of it. It seriously looks like the cupid on drugs is garroting the poor guy with the red string. To be honest, I’m not exactly excited about new installment at all. Saeko stuff aside, for me IW is the fitting conclusion to the series. I seriously don’t see what else could be added to the main story, since all the major storylines got a closure by that point. I only wish for Kiryu to heal his cancer and for Ichi to get his job back (and the same goes for Majima, Saejima and Dojima, since I don’t remember anything said about it in the ending), and for both of them to live in peace for the rest of the days. They’ve had enough shit in their lives already.

What is True Love-An analysis of Gwendolyn’s story from Odin Sphere

Gwendolyn's story is about love! Specificly it is about what makes true love. At the beginning of her story Gwendolyn wants nothing more than the love of her father and so she fights in his war's to earn him glory believing that will grant her his affection. She risks her very life and pays no mind to her own happiness just for the smallest crumb of affection. Gwendolyn has dedicated so much of her life to gaining Odin's love that she doesn't know how to love herself. Eventually Gwendolyn goes as far as to sacrifice her vey honor and status just to save Odin from the pain of losing his first daughter. And only then does Odin show his Gwendolyn genuine love but this is wrong. No one should have to go this fair to earn another person's love let alone from their own father. Odin's love for Gwendolyn is not true love but rather a conditional love that is only revealed when others sacrifice themselves for his benefit. And even then the Kind Words Odin gives to Gwendolyn are soiled when he uses her as tool for his own ambition. Then there are the two men who offer Gwendolyne love freely but for different reasons. First there is Onyx the Inferno King who posses a strong passion for Gwendolyn but that is all he has. Onyx does not truly love Gwnedolyn but rather lusts for her like a thief lusts for gold, going as far as to even blackmail her into being his possession. But then we have Oswald The Shadow Knight the only man in Gwendolyn's life to show her true love. Oswald loves Gwendolyn unconditionally offering her kindness and affection not because he expects her to love him in return but because he wants nothing more but to make her happy. And Gwendolyne who has never been shown true love in her whole life doesn't know how to accept this. She at first denies her feeling for Oswald and tries to once again dedicate her life to her father, giving him the ring that symbolizes Oswald's love. But once Gwendolyn gives up the ring and learns of Odin's actions she realizes the difference between conditional love and true love. And by realizing this truth she can finally accept Oswald's love rejecting her old life and fighting for Oswald's love in both the land of fire and the Kingdom of the Fairies. However tragedy strike Gwendolyn's story as Oswald dies from a broken heart, born not just from his belief that his love is unrequited but because of his own guilt for in his mind keeping Gwendolyn "imprisoned". I find this scene very interesting because it shows that like Oswald like Gwendolyn is not used to being shown true love. Gwendolyn however refuses to accept this lose and travels to the underworld itself to regain her husband. in this land of Despair Gwendolyn comes face to face with her final boss, Odette Queen of the Dead. She out of everyone else in Odin Sphere is the one most guilty of objectifying others. She literally see Oswald as an object refusing to consider him as person. Treating him the same as he treats her precious jewel. She is incapable of showing anyone love and because of that she losses to Gwendolyn who has spent her entire story learning to love. But the defining moment of Gwendolyn's arc isn't the defeating Odette and rescuing of Oswald but rather her final words to her Father. In the end Gwendolyn goes back oh her promise refusing to give Odin the ring that represents her and Oswald's love. Gwendolyn Chooses her own happiness over her father Finally loving herself. And in doing so Odin at last shows Gwendolyn True love by not only respecting her decision but allowing her to life with Oswald in peace. And now Gwendolyn can spend her days not only being embraced by Oswald's true love but by giving him her own love in return.

💛 a favorite familial relationship Henry + Inigo... I have a soft spot for a lot of the parent/kid relationships in Awakening, but I have a LOT of feelings about Henry being Inigo's dad. It's one of those things that's just like, Personal Canon.

💜 a crack ship I do a lot of crossover RP, so I've done a LOT of crack-shipping. Glenn Fraldarius, who by all accounts is supposed to be dead, has hooked up with dudes from several completely unrelated game franchises. A random personal favourite of mine is Xander/Ashe, though.

🩷 a ship that you like, even though it could never work in canon [my pc apparently doesn't know what that emoji is.] Any of my Glenn pairings, technically, since in canon he's dead. I especially like him with Sylvain or Miklan. I feel like MOST pairings are capable of working in FE... so I'll go off the wall and also say that I love Ingway/Oswald from Odin Sphere. That game's canon is VERY hard and fast and the relationships are very integral to the plot, but... well, I'm gay and I like seeing hot anime boys kiss.

Went through a scrolling spree down your odin sphere tag and i agree sooo much it's unreal, gwendolyn's my girl but i never coul get into her romance with oswald & you summed it up perfectly

(also yes on having gwen/mercedes & cornelius/ingway for in-game gay ships, i love ingway/mercedes the most out of the canon romances but sometimes i just wanna play with these characters like barbie dolls yknow)

My July 2023 haul arrived! Along with a parted out DAMtoys RE2R Leon S. Kennedy (Classic ver) head sculpt I purchased specifically to repaint. I'm super happy with the Cloud statue, he's gorgeous, very close to the prototype except the eyes appear to be pixelated, but that's kind of standard now for SE's figures, so no surprise. He's beautiful looking nonetheless, and despite them loving giving Cloud uncooked pasta-looking hair. The prototype didn't have that semi-translucent-glossy finish, so I wasn't expecting it, but they do so for most of their figures it seems.

Very small haul, but due to Cloud's box, it was quite expensive to ship. I am not thrilled… T___T;; I am happy with the figures, regardless and the acrylic stand. I love Odin Sphere, I played the OG release on my fat PS3, but I'm trying to avoid hoarding the figures, because they are mostly the girls and the Oswald one was way too big to ship without losing an eye. Might get it one day! Lol!

AU Yeah August Day One - Bed Sharing

Most girls probably dreamed of their perfect wedding before.

Gwendolyn remembered herself being maybe eight or nine, drawing all day with her sister Griselda while they were home alone. It was always something big and beautiful; outside instead of inside a church, preferably on a clear spring day, and there would be so many flowers and birds. At the time, she had no idea what kind of dress she would wear, but she wouldn’t mind something like their mother’s. In all of the photos Gwendolyn had seen of her, their mom had looked so much like a princess – so happy and beautiful, beaming radiantly in the captured moment.

But it was only a dream.

And dreams couldn’t always be reality.

By age ten, her father controlled many aspects of her life. Anything outside of this – anything generally not to his expectations – did nothing to impress her to him. Or, the reality more likely was nothing she could do for him would ever be enough. All she could do was obey…

That’s what brought her to a small ceremony at the courthouse, holding hands with a man she’d only met once – Oswald was his name. Despite how brief it was, she couldn’t forget how intense his red eyes were, his platinum blonde hair, or just how overall stern he came across. She focused on the gold ring resting on her finger, a matching one adorning his, and just allowed the cold feeling to continue to sink in, everything else around her changing in an unfocused haze.

Before she realized, she had been escorted to a honeymoon suite. Sitting on the only king-sized bed in the room, she clasped her hands together, not knowing where her new husband had gone.

Why was she married again?

It had something to do with a subsidiary to her father’s rival company and Oswald retaining the rights to them. Her father had always been a business traditionalist – as such, marriages were for business and gains, not anything else. He’d funded the wedding and gotten them the suite, and she was sure that meant he was expecting something out of her.

She clasped and twisted her index finger, a cold sweat breaking on her face.

She felt dizzy suddenly, unable to breathe, but continued staring at the gold band on her ring finger.

It only made sense; what else was a wedded couple to do on their honeymoon night?

A door opening nearby had her head snapping up and immediately attempting to compose herself. Oswald caught her eye, but she felt her heart sink upon realizing he’d dressed down from his suit earlier to a loose button-up shirt and pants. Her insides were freezing as he approached, but she didn’t dare break his gaze, knowing what was coming. However, when his hand did reach for her face, she shut her eyes.

The weight of the veil left her head.

Her hair, pulling into an intricate bun, was being undone, each hairpin carefully being removed, and slowly, she felt her hair begin cascade down her back.

She thought about opening her eyes, but she didn’t want to see what would come next.

And as she began to hear the zipper of her dress being undone, she waited for it to start. She expected to be pushed down, for him to take her dress off, and…

The shadow that had fallen over her was gone though, the cologne or aftershave that he was wearing fading when it did. When it didn’t return in the next few minutes as anticipated, Gwendolyn dared to open her eyes.

Oswald wasn’t before her or even by the bed. In fact, when she turned her head to check, she noticed a pillow and the blanket draped over the end of the bed were gone. Hearing shifting coming more from the adjacent living room, she brought her attention back around and noticed he was laying down on the couch. Rising from the bed, hands holding the front of her dress, she stared at him, tilting her head in confusion.

That was… not what she thought would happen.

“… Why are you… on the couch?”

… Maybe she didn’t speak loud enough? He didn’t move for the longest time, but he did eventually speak up.

“You’re clearly uncomfortable and I can understand why. You were left in the dark regarding the negotiations with your father… We were only to be wed; there doesn’t need to be anything more.”

“But…” She was confused. What did he mean? “We’re supposed to – expected to share the same bed. We have to… I’m expected to…”

It’s what her father wanted.

“… Are you ready to do that?”

Gwendolyn’s eyes grew and her words stopped. Oswald was sitting up enough to look back at her, his eyes… softer? He seemed troubled – even confused. Why would that be? But he did seem to be waiting for an answer.

“I… I’m not… but…”

He shook his head.

“You’re not ready, and that’s all that needs to be said. If anyone ‘expects’ anything, it’s none of our concern now.” Steady gaze still on her, he seemed to be thinking. He looked away though before he asked. “Will you be able to undress yourself? I didn’t miss any hidden buttons or hooks?”

“Ah… no. It was only the zipper…”

Keeping his eyes away, he nodded once. “Try getting some rest then… Good night, Gwendolyn.”

Shifting back to his previous prose position before, she continued to stand there, silent. After a few moments, she picked up on light breathing. This was far from what she expected this evening – honestly, she hadn’t known what Oswald would’ve done either, but Griselda had told her stories since she reached marriageable age; marriages of convenience and unhappy wives trapped by their husbands. The business world could be cruel, but Oswald was not meeting those expectations.

Was that a good thing? Bad? Gwendolyn couldn’t be sure, but so far, ‘different’ was not negative.

Taking two steps towards the bathroom, she looked back towards the couch to see if Oswald moved. He hadn’t so much as shifted a muscle, light breaths continuing. A few more steps, another look back his way, and she finally managed to slip into the bathroom, quietly closing the door behind her.

This was nothing like she’d ever dreamed, but so far, she was glad it wasn’t a nightmare.
