Another new book on the “to read pile” that I’m really excited about. The dark, obscure or Other has always played a big role in my life and spiritual path. Having two extreme polarities within myself, coming to understand those forces helped me to better understand who I am and where I stand. And that is really what the “dark” or “left hand” paths are about, self cultivation. “Self-help and self-care have become commodified and cliché….Instead, this book is about a philosophical reorientation concerning the individual and their relationship with others.” Frater Tenebris, is the author and it was published by @llewellynbooks I also noticed an endorsement from @kate_freuler_author who wrote ❤️Of Blood and Bones: Working with Shadow Magick & the Dark Moon which is one of my favorite books (there is a review on my blog). It’s awesome that we are able to write about working with darkness, blood, poisonous plants and all of these nefarious things and not get burned alive! But there is substance to all of this “dark sided” stuff, and DARK PAGANISM takes a thoughtful and philosophical look of this end of the spectrum and it’s place in magical and spiritual practices. Definitely going to be writing a more extensive review on this one! I think there will be a lot of parallels between my personal practice, especially working with baneful herbs and the dark and primal forces that they are often associated with. I think these are important things to discuss openly so that we can communicate more effectively! I often refer to what I do as “dark herbalism” because of the sinister reputations of some of the plants that I work with and their connection to the darker side of magic. It can also deal with some of the areas of life that humans have the most darkness such as sex, death, addiction, pain/trauma and mortality. The word Gnostic simply means one who knows.

It is a general term for an entire field of religious searching and belief, one that allows for great latitude in personal understanding, and often doesn’t adhere to any one sacred book of light.

The history of Gnosticism is well documented and was enriched by the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Texts, sometimes known as The Gnostic Gospels, in Egypt in 1945.

These Christian documents, from the 3rd Century BCE, include apocryphal books of the Bible and alternative views of early Christian doctrine, some of them seemingly blasphemous and heretical to modern followers of monotheistic religions.

There are several unique aspects to the Gnostic systems, many of them carried through into modern metaphysical doctrines, specifically many of the occult concepts dealing with The Goddess in the creation of the world, some of these being implicitly presented to the public in the guise of ritual, magical practices, and even Tarot cards.

Modern culture has been influenced by Gnosticism. Carl Jung’s, “The Red Book,” has been studied and embraced by Gnostic students. It is a wealth of information regarding the search within the physical for spiritual freedom, and through that, the realization of the true essence of God.

Demonic Taxonomy

As I have mentioned previously, just as there is a construct of angelic hierarchy, there is a model of demonic hierarchy, this is most familiar is terms of the writings of Johann Weyer's Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, Dictionnaire Infernal by Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy, and the Ars Goatia of the Lesser Key of Solomon, (an ancient and infamous occult piece) just to name a few. But these works only entertain the ideas of the larger encompassing domain of demonic powers, and does not touch much on the sub-placements of the devils. To explain this I will first bring up the known structure of the heavens, and the angels who preside over specific concepts and matters.

Per example the heavenly spirit Gabriel is the archangel (depending upon which texts you read) governing January, the responsibilities of the Moon, the day of the week Monday, and even events such as Childbirth, to name but a few. Not only Is Gabriel an archangel, so bearing an equivalence and resemblance to the demon Samael of the hellish beasts. Samael is a fallen angel of particular interest, both an archangel before his descent and an angel of death in both positions (as an angel of death is not an attribute to solely the demonic). Samael's position is in many places, yet remains an overall arching demon in the hierarchies, and a specifically evil and dangerous demon at that.

These examples are of notorious entities governing specific and well known factors (such as planets and elements), yet for every item of creation, there are demons and angels then under that rule. Another example of this are the devils under Beelzebub, the prince of all winged creatures and the element they travel therein. Yet under him is structured another hierarchy, modeled with kings, princes, presidents, etc, that then rule over one another in a Legion-like formation. (From what I have studied, the demons of this category outnumber the demons in the other major groupings, the oceans, and walking creatures), and under their rule the list continues down to legionaries (only preform bidding, and do not govern anything beneath themselves), and servants, directionless demons who hold no desire to preform greater duties.

Even to these specific servants, there is a placement in each major category, just as in the Taxonomic Ranks of the modern world, such as: Moon > water> winter> white > etc, at the bottom of this list there are still devils preforming deeds of the demons above them, but these devils are not seen under any classification of the sun (under Paimon), or of the planet Venus, or it's governing (love, lust), yet an entire other set of demos and their legions serve these positions.

This sheds some light of both the angelic and demonic and their titles. And to tie this back towards the Daemon N, He originated under Gabriel before His fall, maintaining His service under these natural affiliations (moon, water, winter, etc) and is the demon of a more intricate subject: human emotion, in which His title therein is The Daemon of Misery, and where Misery is bred, N is to be found.

It is important to note (and I will write on this further later on, as it is a very important subject) that the hierarchical structures shift constantly, and writings such as the Ar Goatia, though accurate at the time, have long since altered and positions change. Albeit several of the mightiest demons such as Asmodeus and Lucifer (who doesn't necessarily hold a title or affiliate with the hierarchy...I will explain this later as well) have maintained their preferred positions and titles of power.

As you can then imagine there are more demons, devils, and angels than the blades of grass upon this earth, and therefore it would be impossible to catalog them all, especially as a servant can then climb in ranking until lastly becoming a King of hell (which has yet to happen). In this I maintain discovering your own familiar demon, and not just picking a name out of an old grimoire that best fits your momentary interests.

14th September 1486, birth of German polymath, physician, and occult writer Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim, one of the major figures of the Occult Renaissance. Writing in his major work ‘De occulta philosophia libri tres’ (Three Books Concerning Occult Philosophy), published between 1531 and 1533; Agrippa formulated a vision of magic whereby the natural world combined with the celestial and the divine. The book was a major influence on fellow Occult Renaissance figures such as Giordano Bruno and John Dee. Agrippa also wrote and compiled older occult works such as the Ars Notoria, the fifth and oldest book from ‘The Lesser Key of Solomon’, also known as the ‘Clavicula Salomonis Regis’, an anonymous grimoire (or spell book) on demonology. The Ars Notoria contains a series of prayers, and learning interspersed with magical words, to master eidetic memory, (the ability to recall images, sounds, or objects after only a few instants of exposure) and instantaneous learning to the magician. Despite being known to the Inquisition, which tried to stop the printing of De occulta philosophia, he was never tried by them, and died of natural causes on this day. Rumours continued to circulate however of his occultist involvement, Agrippa’s dog it was claimed had jumped into the River Rhone, as he was dying, a clear sign that his dog was really a demon. 16th September 1498, death of Castilian Dominican friar, and first Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition Tomas de Torquemada, known as the "the hammer of heretics”. The skull remains the harborer of the doorways to the soul, of the very essense of concious thought, and the very device we use to speak. The skull has and always will have it's superior throne in the dark arts, and will undoubtedly always carry with it the essence of the life it once preserved.

Phoenix-Fire is the Book of Shadows, a philosophical doctrine and a Gothic legend about the Devil. This is a Gothic legend and a guide to transcendental shamanism, alchemy of immortality... The book describes the author's theory - transcendental shamanism of the path of the non-prodemiurgic Left Hand of alchemy and the magic of true immortality. Who really are God and the Devil, Demons, Angels and Fallen Angels, werewolves and vampires, elves and magicians? And what does belief in any gods mean in this World of Shadows? This and much more is discussed in this book. Although, in essence, this book is an exposure of many myths and superstitions. However, it should be remembered that this book is a guide to transcendental shamanism and the alchemy of immortality, which means this book is a guide to magic and occult philosophy, the practice of spiritual development and self-discovery. This is a book of shadows, a book of magic and esotericism, a book of the Left Hand Path of higher occultism, a book of a path that gives the right of choice and freedom to those who really seek it... But this is also a philosophical parable and a Gothic fairy tale. It is actually a beautiful Gothic legend of the Devil with a parallel line of esoteric philosophy. Both lines of the book, both fantasy and philosophical, are closely related to each other in terms of the central idea, which places love, freedom, beauty, enlightenment and harmony above everything, even above any religion, culture, social norms, rules, digestible clichés, like the principle of the path of alchemy of immortality. This is the story of an Angel who once came to this world to save people, but lost himself. After all, people, as always, ruined everything and did not understand anything.
