And dont come at me saying that I don't like him simply because I love Tony Stark (as i should!!) Because i remember being so fucking irked when I first watched this movie!! And I just remembered how mad I was when I watched it again cos I forgot like 60% of what was said and what happened tbh

And Steve. Oh my god. Listening to what he said just pissed me off a majority of the film!! Like bruh! What are you doing hon!!

I get it tho like he just woke up, the future is crazy, all his friends are dead it's insane and fucked up!! But jfc his instant dislike for Tony is weird as hell 💀

Like Tony is on the ship next to Steve and they just bagged loki and thor is gonna show up soon. And Tony is doing his normal rambling shit and basically tries to get to know Steve?? At least that's how i saw it? But ig it pissed steve off cos he just ignored what tony said and said "fury didn't tell me he was calling you in" and he just seemed upset that tony was there? Idk if it was because he came late or cos Loki surrendered like moments after tony showed up or cos he made a joke about steve doing pilates to stay spry (lmao) but he didn't seem happy that Tony was there :/

And later Tony's labbing it up with his shiny new science bro Bruce and poking him (cos that's what he does) and obv bruce would tell Tony to cut that shit out if he really was upset by it but all he can say is "ow!!" Before steve busts into the lab like "ARE YOU CRAZY YOUTRYNAKILLUSALL?!?!? no offence doc :)" and bruce is like "ok I'm not gonna hulk out chill" and basically steve is just in there to tell tony off (I seriously wonder if he was camping outside the lab waiting for Tony to do something he didn't like because he came in RIGHT after tony poked Bruce so)

And i get why he would do that but bruh im pretty sure bruce is fine lmao plus he and tony seem to be getting along so far so idk why he thought "dear god the genius is gonna get us all killed with his reckless behavior!!" And went in to save the day lmao. Maybe I'm just being a bitch but if i were steve I'd see if there was a real problem first. And hulk is a scary concept I get it but steve literally said to Bruce that the only thing he cares about is the fact that he can find the tesseract ans yet every chance he gets he's like "careful guys we don't wanna set banner off now do we?" Like bruh if you were concerned about how much of a handle he has on hulk why didn't you just god damn say so instead of lying to this man's face 😔

What I got from the scenes between tony and bruce vs the scenes between steve in bruce is that Tony trusts that bruce could handle being on this mission while steve just...doesnt :/

So naturally Tony thinks something hinky is going on with shield and bruce fuckin agrees cos hell yeah Science Bros plus SHIELD is sus

And steve is like "don't go snooping this is why shield doesn't like you stark >:( now get back to finding that cube" and then he fucked off to literally do exactly what Tony was doing but without hacking.

Are you kidding me?? We always talk about how much of a hypocrite steve was in Ultron when he was mad at tony for keeping secrets and then keeping the Stark murder a secret but this man showed us who he was from the get go lmao

But then they find out *gasp* Tony was right! Big shocker there huh. And SHIELD is super sus and loki is like bruh y'all cant defeat me like this smh

And one of the most MIND BLOWING scenes in this film is where they're all arguing around the scepter, who's being a chaotic little bitch

Now keep in mind, the scepter was definitely influencing everyone but it didn't tell them WHAT to think or say lmao so i have to assume that to some extent they mean that shit

So I'm just supposed to be focusing on steve so sorry for going off topic but Fury turning the topic of the conversation to tony saying how he built his fortune off of weapons?? That shit was uncalled for like bruh...there was a whole movie about his character development and how he shut down his weapons bc he found out they were hurting innocents...

But anyways

Steve takes this opportunity to call tony out for being narcissistic. His evidence? I'll have to get back to you on that cos i have no fucking clue.

Here's the big argument where we get most of our good old anti-steve content tbh:

Steve says tony is nothing without the suit

Again: where is this man's evidence?? Why is he saying these mean things?? AND I KNOW IT'S COS OF THE SCEPTER BUT NO ONE ELSE WAS TALKING FOR THIS LONG OR ZEROING IN ON ONE PERSON SO STFU

He seems upset that tony actually answers his question like...you asked what i was without the suit? (The best part is that natasha did a little head nod, agreeing with tony calling himself "genius billionaire plybiy philanthropist")

says he knows guys worth ten of Tony without any of the stuff he listed

He just met Tony. They haven't even known each other a week and he's ready picking at his insecurities?? Crazy. Plus when steve says "I've seen the footage. The only person you fight for is yourself." Like ok there wasn't exactly a war for him to go and fight in but go off rogers. When was he supposed to fight for other ppl and what makes you say he didn't?? I'm so confused about the thought process here. And the footage he saw? What was it? Him saving people at the Expo? Him fighting terrorists? A sex tape of him that got leaked??

Says Tony wouldn't sacrifice for someone, wouldn't let some guy crawl over him while laying on a wire

Again how does he know that Tony WOULDN'T?? He's just saying random shit at this point and I just cant

And Tony again gives a smart remark because that's what he does plus it's funny

He said he would cut the wire, which is such a tony thing to say tbh. Like,,in Afghanistan they were like "build us weapons or die" basically and he said "I pick the third option" and got the hell outta dodge

And steve is upset by this answer as well! Another shocker. He says "always a way out" like lol why not? Why are you so pissed? What is the issue darling??

And Tony FINALLY stoops to Steve's level of throwing out insults and says "lmao like you?? Bruh your talents came from a science experiment. Your "heroism" came from a bottle you clown" (obv he didn't say it like that what I said was actually meaner tbh i just hate steve)

And the worst thing i think steve said in the entire film: "you may not be a threat but you better stop pretending to be a hero"

I was just VIBRATING with anger at this I was LIVID. Tony has so many damn insecurities and this is not helping!! Like bruh wtf is Steve doing rn!! Everyone else stopped arguing at this point and is just LOOKING at steve basically tell Tony he's nothing special for no reason besides him not liking tony for reasons unexplained

And wanna know what Tony doesnt do? Listen to him. Im actually pretty sure he told him to fight him twice and tony doesn't get the suit either time lol

And steve has NO comeback for that so he just tells tony to straight up fight him lmao

Idk why I keep forgetting that Steve likes to resolve disagreements by fighting in alleys. So he's ready to post up as if tony is some jock who just wont leave this poor dame be and tiny asthmatic Stevie is the only one willing to stop him. Steve you are HUGE now and tony is just existing next to you and you're yelling at him for it. This scene makes steve look a lot less like a hero and a lot more like the bullies he so fervently advocates against ngl

And then steve grabs tony when shit starts to hit the fan bc "you cant go alone!!" Like bruh just follow him lmao why are you stopping him (just a personal pet peeve tbh not really a big deal i just didn't like it)

And I'll say this again: IK THE SCEPTER WAS MAKING EVERYONE ANGRY AND SHIT! I GET IT! But out of that whole mass argument Steve was the only person focusing on one individual and for such a long ass time too! Tony said one thing that was on the offence instead in defence of himself that whole time and I'm crying cos how tf does the impulsive asshole have more self control than the golden boy Captain America?? I'm at a loss here folks

The way i see it, Tony and Steve don't like each other. They rub each other the wrong way. But the reason i don't like Steve is that he has contempt for Tony right off the bat with no explanation? And meanwhile Tony's whole childhood was probably riddled with Captain America. He probably saw Steve every damn day, or heard his dad talk about him in a higher regard than his own son. So he probably had this ingrained jealousy of Steve from the start and he STILL managed to be as civil as he usually is. But Steve?? I can only fucking guess.

So yeah there's my rant sorry I've been doing so many of these recently I just had a lot of time on my hands and decided to watch some Marvel and get pissed about it lol

TL;DR: after watching Avengers again I realized that Steve has always been pretty shitty so his character development wasn't exactly a drop, more like a stagnant line that no one noticed because he was pretty okay in the Captain America movies

S1E1: The Competition Begins

okie dokie first ever episode of dance moms rewatch starts now :0 i actually remember watching this the very first time it aired on lifetime because i was channel surfing and saw a commercial for it earlier that day. that was the summer between 8th and 9th grade. ah memories... i didnt know what to expect because i did dance when i was a kid but not on a competition team and it was mostly ballet so i was pretty unfamiliar with this whole world. 

anyway lets begin. this is probably gonna be a longer post than what i’ll end up writing for the other episodes in season 1 bc the first episode introduces so much info, just a heads up

Act 1: (aside: yes its insufferable to divide this into “acts” when its really just like “segments separated by commercial breaks” but thats how they’re called in actual tv scripts so im just going with that cuz i cant think of a better/easier way uwu)

i miss these days where they were just talented nobodies from pittsburgh on a low budget reality tv show that nobody even knew would be successful. and the bad hair and makeup but idk if that was also just a 2011 thing lol

okay unpopular opinion alert: i agree with a lot of what abby says about stuff like this but her delivery is flawed, to but it euphemistically, that being said i think the production team of the show and the fame inflating her ego changed all of this somewhere over the course of the second season and its really sad to see :/ i can expand on that thought later tho

aw paige crying bc abby correcting her (but not saying anything personal or out of line, just technique corrections (at based on what we were shown, we dont know everything she said oop)) shes a sensitive kid she never should have been put on this show :( 

paige looks exactly like her mom i didnt realize that before

nia and holly were done so dirty throughout the whole series in terms of the narrative the producers set up about nia being the weakest link :/ 

Act 3:

cathy’s entire involvement in the show from the very beginning was so painfully obviously scripted (or at least heavily staged) 

vivi was also done dirty by the show’s narrative and she was only 6 and they presented her as like the butt of the joke bc her mom’s “character” was crazy and also she wasnt good at dance. i wonder how she feels about the show now that shes a teenager hmm. she really seemed not to give a fuck about dance for better or for worse when she was a kid tho so maybe she doesnt care ?

in what universe would an owner of another competitive dance studio bring her own kid to another studio more than an hour’s drive away, AND be under the impression that she could compete with them in a week, especially when they showed the kids’ and moms’ shocked reaction at the start of the episode to having to learn a dance in a week and compete it? like really what is the point of cathy and vivi being a part of this show im so ????

Act 4: 

THE MINISTER DAWN OUTBURST HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THIS

this fight is about 50% of what got them a full season 1 and then things took off from there tbh. the other 50% was the electricity dance but thats a point for next episode..... :)

LET’S PLAY THE BIBLE GAME ABBY, WHEN JESUS SAW THINGS THAT WERE WRONG HE WENT AFTER THEM, AND YOU’RE NOT GOING TO DO THIS TO MY KID” ma’am i think the wrongs jesus addressed were of slightly more importance than a preteen being told she cant take a dance class if shes violating the studio’s dress code

this is so good bc it wasnt staged afaik and there are regular students all throughout the building just STARING at them like lmao what even is going on, so im pretty sure this is real???

regardless, yeah dont wear socks and a tshirt to an acrobatics class, thats common fucking sense

they went all the way to phoenix to compete 3 numbers, only 2 of which are shown in the episode.

i think this is the only time they ever went to west coast dance explosion because its an actual competition and they wouldnt allow filming after this lol i think they did go to wcde one weekend in addition to a competition where they were filming but it wasnt shown or mentioned at all

abby not wanting brooke and paige to have a french manicure on stage if theyre the only ones in the group with the french tips is perfectly valid idk why it was framed as some crazy micromanaging shit

i also am really not a fan of the whole “high functioning alcoholic wine mom/crazy stage mom” schtick they were pushing for the first few episodes of this show

in retrospect i feel like so many of the quips in this episode were intentionally fucking crazy just to get the audience engaged enough to want to watch more episodes...

“see those girls down there, those girls with the legs? thats who you’re up against, so step it up”

abby warning them that its dangerous for their little party hats to slip when they’re doing aerials and pirouettes and stuff: “what if you were at radio city music hall and they had the ice rink out and you were doing a side aerial and fell 13 stories down and died, huh?” fantastic point abby thank you for saying that to 5 girls ages 8-12 less than 5 minutes before they went on stage. perfect time for a teaching moment like that :)

i forgot how bad the camera work was in the first few episodes for footage of their performances. like they really didnt think the show’s audience would actually want to watch the kids dance, the producers and editors thought we just wanted to see stage mothers yelling at each other lol

also the mic feed over the music of abby talking to herself giving them corrections while watching them dance on stage.... im so glad they quit doing that. i dont remember them doing it like that for any other episode, i hope im right

this choreo is very basic and its a cute dance i guess but its very cringe in some places and for the first episode this is such a forgettable group routine

their scandalized reaction to placing third and the sad piano music is so funny honestly

and maddies reaction in the interview which was almost definitely fed to her by the producers where shes like “i win all the time i dont really know what its like to LOSE i always win or get runner up” so many of maddies lines from season 1 interviews sound so fake and she was probably too naive to know they were getting her to say that stuff so they could paint her as a conceited brat (she was EIGHT)

the trio costume was so ugly im sorry (is it supposed to be like a 50s pinup bathing suit?) (and the headband thing looks so bad) and also the music is bad but they had no real authority over that bc of copyright stuff

chloe’s headpiece coming forward and the ensuing drama was another moment in the episode that really solidified public interest in the show imho.... 

“YOU’RE IN THE BAR HAVING A DRINK AND YOUR KID’S HEADPIECE IS FALLING OFF” “it did not FALL OFF it CAME FORWARD it was FINE!!!”

god i love this shows approach to Everything so far,....as ruth put it, half the time its like ‘oh wow they should do [x]/i wish theyd do [x] but ofc they wont cause its a shounen’ but then they DO do [x] and its like damn thats dope 

anyways i love how gon is increasingly approaching situations with his Plucky Shounen Protag Attitude in full swing, and he pretty much gets shot down every time. BUT his general determination to see killua bc killuas his FRIEND and hes gonna RESCUE HIM is still a good and pure motivating force 

like here, when hes climbing over the wall and hes like whatever i dont wanna have to deal w/being tested thats bullshit, i wanna see killua, my intentions are pure, im gonna try my luck with the dog....i was like ok yeah he’ll get over and like tame or defeat the dog and the guard will be suitably impressed bc nobodys ever done That before, and then gon will continue on to get killua 

but NOPE instead the guard calls him down and explains that gon Will Die if he tries that, and then the guard will die too for letting that happen. and gon is like oh shit my actions have consequences for people other than me, wow. 

and THEN the guard takes them in to meet the dog. and hot DAMN that is a scary creature. not even really a dog tbh. they did an excellent job making the dog Legit Scary and not just like, big and flashy looking....those eyes are so soulless, and the proportions are freaky 

and the guard says exactly what i was thinking - that gon would use his Country Boy Woodland Creature Skills to workaround the dog....but then the subversion - this creature is NOTHING like the woodland critters gon is probably used to dealing with. theres no way gon stood a chance here. the guard just saved him from a really unfortunate death 

i love all the Super Heavy Stuff in the servant house that seems so inconvenient vbhjdkfasjfld. also forgot to mention earlier but the guard guy being Absolutely Ripped was wild and kinda funny 

training montage! gon continues to be so cute. and i love so much how leorio and kurapika are like no, you rest, we’ll take care of this. good parents!!!!

and then!!!! they sync up and use the power of gay love to almost open the gate. but then gon uses the power of Improbable Shounen Protag Healing Speed to toss that arm sling off and help out

This ep was a roller coaster oh my god. Non stop plot not that the tournament is done, and we saw like EVERY CHARACTER my feeble heart could not keep up. The ONLY thing that bothered me was part of the fight sequence at the end, like it was half drawn beautifully half animated so stiff and blocky ??? Threw me for a loop. But next week is only gonna get more intense??? I’m gonna guess we’ll get through the Elder Centipede fight??? But then what does that mean for the last episode??? I am full of SO MANY QUESTIONS??? I really don’t want the season to end yet, 12 eps is not enough. There’s only 2 more. Just. I’m not ready to let go of my bbs it feels like I only JUST got them… Well! 1) So this is how Faith is doing as the leader…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder who’s the boss… (maybe we should ask Abed.)

2) I don’t like seeing Faith hurt, but I do get a very sick (I admit it) satisfaction at seeing all these girls hurt and scared because they kicked Buffy out and they screwed everything up in the worst possible fashion. I know that by having Faith lead them into yet another trap the writers were trying to prove the point that what happened at the vineyard could’ve happened to anyone and that it wasn’t Buffy’s fault (Buffy will make this same point herself later on the episode.) Both Buffy and Faith were trying to do what they thought was best, yet it backfired. Shit happens yada yada yada. Yet I just can’t help but feel personally vindicated when I see Faith and the potentials fuck everything up so spectacularly.

On the other hand, not only was Buffy able to pull herself together after the group (and her friends! Her family!) kicked her out and made her feel like the worst piece of shit in the whole world, but she also managed to A) get the scythe and B) make Caleb nervous, which was a first. So yeah. #teamBuffy

3) So why exactly were the Scoobies looking for Buffy? I mean, didn’t they kick her out literally the day before? And now they’re suddenly worried about her or something? The only person who followed Buffy after they all kicked her out was Faith. Faith! Do you see how wrong/ironic that this? Do you see how painful it must’ve been for Buffy not to have NONE OF HER FRIENDS – not Xander, not Willow, not Giles, not even her own sister! – go after her to see if she was okay? To ask her where she was going or what she was going to do? The only person who showed any concern whatsoever about her was probably the only person she would’ve labeled a potential enemy. 

Damn you all, I’m still pissed off. I hate this. I hate having to feel this way about the characters I’ve loved for seven seasons in the FINAL EPISODES OF THE SHOW. It just feels so wrong, but I can’t help but HATE THEM. What the hell was this fucking writing choice? I hate it. I hate everything about it.

11) Again, I get the same feeling with Xander. Like, did they all suddenly forget they had left Buffy alone and kicked her out of her own house? Xander is all like, “I don’t need you to protect me just because I lost an eye” but literally a day before he was telling her it was HER fault he’d lost it, and using that as a justification not only for removing her from her role as a leader but also TO KICK HER OUT OF HER OWN HOUSE. And now it’s just like nothing ever happened? How is that possible? How is literally no one apologizing to Buffy? And not only is he not apologizing, but Buffy is telling him that he’s her heart and the reason she’s still alive, which okay, it’s all kind of true, but he’s also the guy WHO BLAMED YOU FOR LOSING HIS EYE AND WHO KICKED YOU OUT OF YOUR OWN HOUSE THE DAY BEFORE?!

I didn’t know that End of Days could make me as angry as Empty Places but here I am.

We’re 14 minutes into the episode and still, no one has apologized to Buffy and they’re all pretending like they didn’t turn their backs on her and it’s pissing me off. I hate feeling this way in the episode prior to the series finale. This is not how a fan should be feeling right before the show ends!

12) Not only do I know what a glottal stop is but I’ve also learned how to pronounce it. Or at least I was able to pronounce it a few years ago.

This is something that had been a long time coming. Since day one, Faith had envied Buffy. Just like Buffy saw in Faith her road not taken, Faith saw in Buffy the life she could’ve had but didn’t. She envied it and she wanted it for herself. She literally tried to steal it away several times. So if she couldn’t have it, if it wasn’t meant for her, then she could take Buffy away from it, drive her to the dark side, where she lived. Every attempt was futile, even stealing Buffy’s body and literally taking her life. It only made her feel more undeserving, more inadequate, more unworthy. But every time she’d taken a shot at being the leader, it was by playing tricks, by taking what it wasn’t rightfully hers. This time around, she had somehow earned it. There was no foul play on her part. Others made the decision for her and gave her the role she’d craved for so long. And she finally understood that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Yes, Buffy did have friends and people who looked up to her and cared about her. But when push comes to shove, when tough calls must be made, the Slayer is always alone. The weight of the world is only on her shoulders, and she can’t share the burden. It took four seasons but Faith finally got it. And she could finally let go of all the envy and jealousy.

18) I just love the fact that for the first time Buffy is the one who opens up to Spike. She’s always been the one who pretends there’s nothing between them and who skirts around her feelings and dismisses his. But not this time. And for me, it was enough that she acknowledged that it meant something, even if they – and we – don’t know exactly what that was.

20) Am I the only who thinks this speech is okay but like, the writers were trying too hard to give Anya her “Anya Speech Moment” of the season and it kind of feels a bit, I don’t know, forced?

ANYA Well...I guess I was...kinda new to bein' around humans before. But now I've... seen a lot more, gotten to know people... seen what they're capable of, and... I guess I just realized...how amazingly screwed-up they all are. I mean really, really screwed-up in a monumental fashion. And they have no purpose that unites them, so they just drift around, blundering through life until they die...which they...they know is coming, yet every single one of them is surprised when it happens to them. They're incapable of thinking about what they want beyond the moment. They kill each other, which is clearly insane. And yet, here's the thing. When it's something that really matters, they fight. Like, I know most of the so-called metaphors in this show were not so subtle (think the fucking monster-penis in Doublemeat Palace, for instance.) But the feminist struggle in the slayer vs the council struggle was always something that I personally enjoyed. And this is how Joss’s brand of “feminism” began to crumble down, in my opinion. This is what a white dude who is a self-proclaimed feminist believes to be a Good feminist storyline, but it’s so clichéd and self-evident it's almost cringe-worthy. Like, you get a bunch of Evil Men quite literally raping a Poor Woman, who is faked Empowered (her powers were lent to her by the Evil Men and the source of her powers is Evil, Demonic in nature because  duh! she is a Woman)  so that they can Manipulate her and Use her for the benefit of the Patriarchy. But oh wait! This is a Feminist Show! So in spite of what the Evil Men who were supposedly the Powerful ones did, there always were These Great and Powerful Women behind it all, the True Guardians of the Slayer, This has been a Matriarchy all along, you see?! PLOT TWIST!

Yawn.

The worst part? I can imagine all the writers patting themselves on the back for writing such a groundbreaking and Feminist storyline and for sticking it to the Men.

Because I’m positive this is what former lovers do after not seeing each other in over a year, being currently emotionally unavailable, and facing the greatest evil of all. Suck face.

thank u!! god i dont actually know THAT much about the language yet bc i havent started researching but a few interesting points i’ve picked up are that 1. they always referred to drug users as ‘fixer/fixerinnen’ which is obviusly like...quite a politicised term when they had the option to say like drogenabhängige or sth 2. academics would constantly refer to ‘ansteckungsverdächtigen’ and the verdächtig in that is like...HMMM...not good 3. there was a medical panel held in 1987 in east berlin which used english terminology to describe sexual practices that carried increased risk of hiv transmission (e.g. fisting) and because lots of people didn’t speak english they weren’t actually being educated on what they should be avoiding/doing more safely SO!! theres a lot to look at i havent really started researching like i said i should though but theres already a lot of interseting things in there imo sorry this is probably super boring i just get very excited about it

oh absolutely!! it was because of necessity (the way the ecnomy was set up meant that they needed all available bodies working) but it meant that there were SO many more provisions especially childcare and you can still see that prevailing today theres a huge divide between east/west in terms of maternity leave and childcare

aye!! 2018 is almost here, and i have been DYING to make a favorite songs/mvs in kpop of this year thing. it has been a fucking ride let me tell you.... first things first, just to celebrate this year and give myself some leeway, there will be 17 songs!! and they are in no particular order!! i am not a favorites person, i have too much love in my pitiful heart.... anyway, lets start!!

17. movie - btob (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42A-rFdralM)     there are many things i love about this song. i got into kpop quite literally the very beginning of this year, and thats wild, but this song was one of the first of many i had heard, and didnt know much about then but love now. i specifically remember going through that one hot 100 kpop song playlist on youtube and finding this one, and instantly love it. its one of the classics of this years, and def opened my mind to a lot more.

(btw, exid is another group i actually stan, so i had been anticipating this one; i watched it while i was at school dusbgukg). so sad solji couldnt physically make it this comeback, but she was in the album, and that was enough for us. still wishing her the best recovery!

well, thats all of them! keep in mind, this is a personal opinion thing, and there many, many, MANY songs of this year i loved, but this is a list and its gotta end somewhere, so i chose the ones that really stood out to ME. this was probably a waste of time, and bet this gets no notes, but in my heart, it was worth it. i love writing and ranting out my thoughts. this was my first year in kpop, and while yes, there were a few devastating and heart breaking moments that im still not fine about, it was good. my friends are gonna hate me, but this is just one of many years to come of me being into this shit. hope next year delivers as good as this one did. happy new years kpop fans!

Review for Game of Trolls

Today, we live in a Philippines torn between the horrors of its past and the fear for its present. With the dawn of issues such as th EJK and the resurfacing talk of Martial Law during the Marcos regime, for the modern youth, it’s not that easy to put these problems into perspective. We were born at a time before we could remember it, but were born in its aftermath. The Philippine Educational Theater Association, with their production “Game of Trolls”, sought to do just that.

“Game of Trolls” revolves around the life of Hector (TJ Valderrama), a modern milennial working for Bimbam (Vince Lim) the son of an Apo loyalist. There, he earns money by fighting against SJWs like his friend-zoned flatmate Constance (Galang Fernandez) by means of hacking, covering up Martial Law, and alternative facts under the pseudonym HecklerBelter on different sites. He also holds an angsty grudge against his mother, Nanay Terre (Galang Fernandez) who, ironically, also happens to be a former Human Rights activist during the Marcos Regime. After attempting to bury the casualties of the Martial Law under the “Cloud” (a software that masks information), he gets visits from ghosts of Martial Law past that open his eyes to the tragedy of Martial Law, and the falsities of his beliefs, in game shows and moving musical numbers.

I appreciate that it was a story that needed to be told. We cannot deny the reality of historical erasure. Many people beside me, and myself included were genuinely learning new things. But, having labeled itself as a “musical for millennials”, perhaps came a little to its detriment. It pandered too heavily to its target audience, and it showed. It assumes a lot of the generation it markets itself to, and sometimes dumps information on our shoulders as if a more sparse telling that did not require an info dump would suffice.

It at times (most evident through the unappologetic and sometimes

tiring use of pop culture sound effects) uses pop culture reference so much in an attempt to be relatable and hip to its audience that it risks being contrite. But, I still appreciated the other instances where pop culture is used cleverly as a lense with which to make martial law relevant to today.

That being said, I admired the play and its respect for its subejct matter. It was made in cooperation with the National Historical Commission, and it showed in how much facts they were able to teach us (or at times, simply tell us about, which is a huge difference).

I loved the main screen and the animation they utilized! I also ALWAYS appreciate PETA’s minimalist and yet creative set designs. They also used the theater to its full usability to tell the story, I loved the moments like when Nanay was talking about her experience during the martial law, how the sound effects were cleverly used to put us in the right astmosphere.

I also loved scenes Like the rap battle and the game show. The lines in these scenes were so artfully crafted, enjoyable, and yet directly addresses the problems, in a way I wished the rest of the script had consistently done. Whenever they explicitely spelled out the message they were trying to impart when it was already obvious, i found myself taken aback.

The play at times either treats us as one of two things: Ignorant angsty youth or smart individuals able to process complex information. This lead to an incoherence when it came to how they relayed the themes and messages. As I said, at times they found it necessary to spell out the message instead of visually telling the story??

I found myself disliking the romance portion (the one specifically crafted for the apparent sensationalism that creating for MILLENNIALS apparently required) the most. ESPECIALLY THE AMBIGOUS LGBT/GENDERFLUID CHARACTER WHOSE SEXUALITY WAS ONLY EVER PLAYED FOR COMEDIC PURPOSES !!!

NO, NOT ALL LGBTQ+ CHARACTERS NEED TO BE FLAMING SJWs BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT OK TO USE A CHARACTER’S SEXUALITY ONLY AS A MEANS TO STAY RELEVANT, RELATABLE AND SO YOU CAN BRAG ABOUT HAVING REPRESENTATION. WE DONT NEED MERE REPRESENTATION, WE NEED ACCURATE AND M E A N I N G F U L REPRESENTATION.

I understand that they wanted to keep us engaged and through focus groups found out that millennials responded best to romances (though I believe personally that Filipino culture could tell you this, without having to focus-group it) It is not an excuse to make a romance that I saw as trite and shoe-horned in.

There were moments where the “kilig” was completely unearned. Especially when the graohics at the back unambigously spelled their relationship out for me, that i at first wouldnt have gotten. Their romance served no actual movement to the plot, it was so background and unnecessary. I WISH they didnt have those grpahics at the back that spelled it all out for you because then we wouldve had to genuinely earn and realize for ourselves the chemistry they have.

THEY CLEARLY LIKED EACH OTHER FROM THE START so we never have any moments where the two love interests build an understanding and a genuine romantic bond with each other because FROM THE BEGINNING they were already crushing hard on one another and the only thing left was to say yes. We never got enough actual time devoted to setting up their romance BECUASE IT WAS SO BACK BURNED, IT DIDNT EVEN NEED TO BE THERE! They couldve stayed friends and it would have been almost completely the same.

For the review: Maybe something like: Some quote from the creator about millenials tas “And that’s exactly what you’ll get, so dont expect it to be much more than the romance put in for millenials’ attention spans than they intended,”

they spent way more time HECKLING EACH OTHER ONLINE than as actual friends, much less love interests !!! The plot was also quite… unclear at times? Not because they werent being explicit (THEY WERE) but beause the flow and the tonal shifts of each scene were so drastic that at times they were left feeling like two peices of completely different parts of the story.

We would go from crying to kilig to laughing in no time flat. We had no scenes where we were left to just appreciate the serene BECAUSE THERE WAS ALWAYS SOMETHING HAPPENING. Which is good for spectacle, but breathing space is something we would appreciate.

also, you cant be primarily motivated by angst and apathy. These are thibgs that usually lead one to non-action rather than TAKING A JOB AT THE ACTUAL MOST POLAR OPPOSITE THING YOUR MOTHER STOOD FOR. His motivation was to be a horrible person to his mom.

That does not make for a good and likeable character. What saved him though, were his jokes, and the humor thatvthe script peppered around him. As well as the excellent acting that hid the character flaws well.

THE VILLAIN HAD NO ACTUAL PERSONAL MOTIVATIONS. the script lacked an awareness of how motivation works in real life, so they created characters with often flimsy motivations that did things simply because the plot or situation called for it rather than because of any decision they conciously have to make.

MOST OF THOSE ACTUAL DECISIONS where made before the play even started, so this device that couldve been used to visually show character was instead poured into actual monologued lines. SHOW DONT TELL.

But ultimately, it’s something we had to see, especially for those of us with little to know knowledge on the Martial Law, it really helped but the play into perspective.

It did what it was set out to do, show Martial Law’s horrors while also being appealing to millennils. At its core, that’s what matters the most.

I remember my classmates and friends gushing about the play with fondness as we went put of the cinema. For all its flaws, it was able to imbed itself in the heart of its target audience.

It did not skirt around the issue with deep allusions and metaphors, it showed us how it was without holding back. And, in true José-Rizalian fashion, bared Martial Law out for everyone to see. And for that, I leave it a good 3.5 star rating and a hope to rewatch it again, that I may perhaps understand more and appreciate it.

frankie and witney: i loved it i thought it was a bit overscored given the other scores but thats no shade at all. i love witney’s choreo, she’s really the queen of giving me dances that are cute & watchable even if they don’t necessarily ~fit the style. the sparkles were so cool esp when you consider that their placement had to be PERFECT for those graphics to look good. and frankie’s girlfriend’s little journal was so fucking cute.

to and cheryl: i feel bad. i remember his package bc it was so sweet but i cant remember his dance sjakfnjfs :( hold on imma rewatch…….ok im back that dance was cute. i have nothing is such a bop i was singing along the whole time. cheryls choreo is so good what an icon, but terrell is sooo not memorable. id be cool with him going home next week. but i feel like he’s still gonna squeeze out another 2-3 weeks

nikki and artem: i loved this dance so much but again i feel like nikki just keeps getting lost in the shuffle for me like i want to love her so much more than i do :( but this dance was beautiful and definitely her best so far im proud of her. i hope this is a breakthrough moment for her bc she made herself so vulnerable i lvoed it. and i REALLY HOPE she gets a better running order next week

nick and peta: okay….i was on the highest of keys expecting that to suck but it didnt???? awkward in places sure but tbh i even think bruno couldve thrown an 8 like that was really sweet. peta also looked fucking gorgest as always but her hair tonight in particular was so nice. i kinda feel like their luck is running out though and they might go home next week…i hope not though bc peta DESERVES to go further. let my fav get to week 6 its what she deserves

lindsey and mark: i dont even know what to say about that it was so so beautiful i love mark hes a genius, that dance was brilliant, the ending was phenomenal, the song was amazing, i was an emotional mess. DANCE OF THE NIGHT FOR ME just purely based on watchability bc idk shit about technique!!! FUCK YOUR 8 LEN!!

derek and sharna: im….sad i saw their elimination coming but i’m so sad. this dance was a really good way to go out, and im glad he got the opportunity to have a final dance like that. it was so full of joy and his daughter’s reaction really got me. im sad for sharna too bc derek was such a step up from bonner, aka the human equivalent of a packing peanut. actually thats really not fair to packing peanuts i take it back.

jordan and lindsay: okay YESSSS….THIS WAS WHAT I WANTED!!! it was such a beautiful story and his reaction was so amazing. i feel like the audience really needed to see that emotion from him because his dances just come off as so effortless and he performs with such ease. this was another one that left me in shambles. im so happy for them and im so glad they got that score.

sasha and gleb: omg i feel like im such a woman hater every time i have something negative to say about the women usaufknajs but this was just like so forgettable to me. im so sorry sasha you deserve better from me. but the choreo was just like…a miss for me and the fact that the song was sung so badly didnt help.. ughhgha. on a positive note this was 3000x better than last week but that wasnt exactly a difficult achievement ajskknjf :(

vanessa and maks: i love vanessa so fucking much she’s so likable i want to be her best friend i hope she’s cool with hanging out with a 20 year old. im so glad they didnt mention the tabloid stuff tbh like this was about HER and it was such a heart wrenching (but ultimately joyous!) story. i havent watched press stuff yet, so im nervous about that but i really hope people still back vanessa bc i really want to see her go far im throwing them all of my votes tbh. also i lvoed len saying that maks curated the dance to his liking hahaha.

drew and emma: i still cant decide if i like drew because his personality is great, he and emma are great together, but something about his dancing just doesnt do it for me. i generally enjoyed this though and jonathan was impressive for having basically jumped into dancing for the first time ever. right before he came in the camera was focusing on emma for like 10 whole seconds and i was like what the fuck is happening so jonathan jumping in was such a surprise i was so excited. it was just such a happy dance it was so emma. i liked it i think

victoria and val: AAAAHHHH!!! YES VAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he did exactly what i wanted for an emotional dance. i was mad that they didnt get contemporary but val was able to incorporate the mood that having a contemporary as their style wouldve given them so well. also victoria is literal human sunshine i cant help but smile whenever she speaks shes just so fucking cute!!!! yayyYYY!!

overall this was one of my fav MMYs in recent memory i was so pleased. but bring back opening numbers okay thats all if you read this ily.
