Let's Talk About Lincoln And His Dads, Okay?
I think people claiming that Lincoln and Grant "aren't so different after all" because, like everyone else in the show, they both have blood on their hands, have mostly missed the mark on where the core of Lincoln's issues with his dad(s) lie in the first place.
Moreover, I'm tired of people insinuating that Lincoln's troubles pale in comparison to Normal's or Scary's or Hermie's, and I'm tired of people saying that Lincoln is overreacting, or that Lincoln is a hypocrite for calling out his dad's behavior, or that he is in the wrong for setting boundaries, or that he's ungrateful, or that he's responsible for ensuring his dad's emotional wellbeing and not the other way around!
*breathes* So let's. Let's finally talk about Lincoln and Grant (and Marco also him).
[WOAH THERE! Hey you, yeah you, this is a long-ass post, mhm, it's one of those, so please keep that in mind before venturing below the cut. Maybe grab yourself a drink or a bite to eat first, yeah? Additionally, sorry the transcript stuff is a bit messy in this one, tumblr has a 30 image limit and well, I had to find workarounds. Also, I haven't yet added alt text for the transcript screenshots- I plan to when I have a bit more energy for it, but I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the meantime!]
Part 1/4: "Honesty is hardly ever heard, and mostly what I need from you"
Lincoln is certainly a pacifist at heart (in more recent times important examples of this include Lincoln's refusal to harm Scary in the Swallows household, as well as Lincoln being the only one of the teens to successfully avoid using violence in front of d00d during their most recent standoff with Willy), and in good paladin fashion functions as the group's moral compass the majority of the time.
Despite this, Lincoln's morals are not so simplistic and idealistic as to not differentiate between different motives for violence, nor does he view acts of violence in and of themselves as signs that a person is "evil" or "irredeemable". He can for example, see the difference between the acts of Willy and those of the kiddads, as he tries to explain when confronted by the other teens on the matter:
Tumblr media
In fact, even after Grant tells Linc all of this during the incursion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lincoln's primary goal is still to save his dad first and foremost, then offer him the room to explain himself, without immediately chalking him up as a bad person because of what he has done.
Tumblr media
Lincoln certainly doesn't approve of Grant and his violence, though he can understand that things are seldom black and white. But the killing is far from the only issue here. In fact, it's not even the main issue.
Grant creates a foundation based on trust and accountability whose importance in the Li-Wilson household is hammered in from the very first episode.
Tumblr media
And we see throughout the early episodes of the season just how strongly Lincoln believes that Grant would never lie to him.
Tumblr media
Then of course the incursion point encounter happens. There are several elements of this encounter that we will gloss over for now and go back to later, but of immediate importance is the fact that this interaction serves as direct confirmation for Lincoln that his dad has in fact been lying to him his entire life.
Tumblr media
Additionally, he learns that Grant possesses a deep hatred of himself, wants to die, perceives himself as "broken beyond repair", and fears that Lincoln will somehow wind up just like him. That's a lot for one kid to have dropped on them, let alone all at once and without warning!
So- Lincoln wants to confront his dad after this both because he wants his dad to explain himself and take accountability for his dishonesty and for his actions more generally, and because he is concerned for his dad's wellbeing.
Tumblr media
Now let's look at how Grant has, over the course of the season, responded to Lincoln's attempts to get him to take responsibility for his actions, and talk about his mental health:
The first thing Grant does is pull a classic Wilson "we'll talk about it later". Then the very next thing he does is lie to Lincoln again, now pretending that his plan is to fix things with Erin by offering her a gift (when of course he's actually set out to steal the sun)
Tumblr media
Then as a deflection when Lincoln further tries to confront him about the lying, he indirectly equates everything he has kept secret from Lincoln (see the incursion point stuff) to "little white lies" and, contrary to the philosophy he so heavily instilled in Lincoln, argues that sometimes lying can protect the people one cares about:
Tumblr media
Which as a point of interest I would like to compare and contrast to something Lincoln says in an earlier episode:
Tumblr media
"lies can protect" vs "protecting is also trusting"- anyways moving on,
From there Grant's plan to steal the sun eventually comes to light (heh) and gets foiled, forcing the teens to be the mature ones in the situation and try to negotiate something with Erin. While he is certainly disappointed by everything going on, however, Lincoln's priorities vis-à-vis Grant are still, first and foremost, to ensure that he is safe, and when time allows for it get an apology from him and get him to talk openly about everything he has withheld. At this point in time Lincoln, while obviously angry at his dad, still very clearly cares about his dad and just wants to be able to talk with him without all the lies or deflection or excuses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the teens are backed into a corner when their attempts at negotiation go sour, and ultimately wind up helping Grant steal the sun. Once that is over, Lincoln tries to confront his dad again, now with regards to some of the things he said about himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Do note that last bit especially as it will be of relevance in the next section)
Then after Grant ignores the other teens when they try to talk to him, Lincoln calls him out and once again asks him to apologize, in part for having told Lincoln previously that they were dangerous and that he was not to hang out with them:
Tumblr media
(as you might have guessed, Grant does not apologize).
Then it is established that the "zone of truth" in the Li-Wilson household isn't actually a spell but an agreed upon promise between Marco, Grant, and Lincoln to tell only the truth when someone calls upon the zone of truth, further cementing the degree to which honesty is an important Li-Wilson family value. Whilst in the zone of truth, however, Grant beats around the bush with regards to his intentions, and the teens ultimately decide that they do not want him to come along with them to the church of the doodler, as he is untrustworthy, in addition to Lincoln saying that he needs some space for his own sake. Grant then pretends to respect this decision, though he is in fact once again lying through his teeth, and sneaks back on later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before exiting the bus for the first time, however, Lincoln tries to get his dad to open up a bit about his feelings. Grant's response?
Tumblr media
Time after time after time, Grant refuses to confront himself and address anything from what occurred at the incursion, and in fact adds on to everything with a whole new slew of lies, and with each failed attempt at connection the rift between Lincoln and Grant increases. And Lincoln, true to his values and how he was raised, is not a hypocrite in wanting openness and accountability from his dad. Lincoln is not and has never acted like he is perfect and beyond making mistakes, but Lincoln takes responsibility for his actions, even when the degree to which he is actually complicit in the crime at hand is questionable. He writes a letter to the families of the firemen because he feels responsible for their deaths. He apologizes to Taylor for lying to him about the bracelets and helps not only Taylor but also Nicky escape the clutches of the FBI, even though the consequence of doing so could easily have been his own death. When he thinks he may have inadvertently lead Hero on, his immediate decision is to take accountability for it and clear things up. All of this in addition to consistently apologizing to his friends when he thinks he may have hurt them for one reason or another.
This is also an important thing to consider when we talk about the place of violence in the show. Yes all the characters, including Lincoln himself, have had to kill at some point or another for the sake of survival and protecting the ones they love. But Lincoln does not use the blood on his hands to justify violence in future decisions. Despite the fact that he has had to kill before, Lincoln, as mentioned in the beginning of this essay, continues to try incredibly hard to act as pacifist whenever he can, choosing to protect those around him with as little collateral damage as possible. Does he have a perfect track record? No! Does he still try his damned hardest to choose kindness and mercy? Absolutely! And this is an important distinction especially between Lincoln and Grant.
And then Grant kills Terry. Now Lincoln must shift his priorities towards protecting his friends from his dad, but in running after Scary still finds himself forced to confront him. So what does Grant have to say regarding his actions?
Tumblr media
Both Lincoln and Scary are right to be furious with this response, Terry Jr. is dead and all Grant can offer in response is what is essentially another excuse. Grant's mental state does not absolve him of responsibility or accountability for his actions, which as Lincoln points out (and repeats later) consist not only of the singular choice of shooting Terry, but of every choice he has made before and after that. "I'm sorry your dad is broken" obviously doesn't bring Terry Jr. back, but perhaps more importantly demonstrates that Grant is still not willing to reflect on his actions any further than that and work on himself moving forward.
So Lincoln does what is perhaps the most difficult thing he has done in his life, and disowns his father. This is not a rash, impulsive decision. As established, Lincoln has given Grant many chances throughout the season to address his behavior and at least fucking *talk* with Lincoln about his mental state, but he refused. He refused, not because he means harm, but because Grant truly believes himself to be fundamentally broken and irreparable, and doesn’t see the effect that his own suffering is having on his son. This, in addition to continuously failing to take Lincoln seriously and treat him as more than a little kid, both in failing to listen to Lincoln's voices of concern as well as in disregarding any of his proposals to go about things differently (whether that means avoiding violence, trusting rather than lying, or both).
So when Lincoln says:
"It's not about what you just did now, Dad. It's all your choices. You chose me. There wasn't some passion, or, or just a kid. You chose me as your kid, knowing you were broken. You can't take that back. And… I love you, and I hate that you made me love you, when… you are who you are and you knew it."
This isn't Lincoln saying that Grant should not have had a kid because he is mentally unwell or has trauma, it is Lincoln saying that Grant continues to make choices without acknowledging his agency in those choices and the effect they have on those around him, instead choosing to pin his mistakes on his perceived brokenness without any resolution to do something about that.
And before you say, "but Grant didn't have a choice in becoming Lincoln's parent since he saved him from the Titanic":
This simply isn't true, as strictly speaking there was nothing stopping Grant and Marco from putting Lincoln up for adoption if one or both of them did not feel themselves to be ready or capable of taking care of a child and
Ignoring Lincoln's exact phrasing, "choosing to be a parent" is not just about the literal choice to have a child, it's about every choice you make before and after that. It's choosing not to express your concerns over parenthood with your spouse, which based on Grant's track record:
Tumblr media
-Is definitely in-character for him. Conversely, in Marco's case, it may be choosing not to ask your partner about their feelings on the matter (because, really, asking Grant on the spot while literally on a sinking ship if he's okay with adopting the baby they just found is kinda rough). It's choosing not to go to therapy (not that we know whether Grant specifically did/does or not but all the same). It's choosing not to apologize when your child is upset with you because of something you did. It's choosing not to take them or their friends seriously. It's choosing to lie instead of trust. It's an endless amount of choices that Grant (and Marco) made every step of the way!
As a final note for this section, what's particularly unfortunate is that even with Lincoln's disownment, Grant still has failed to show any major signs of change. Note this telling exchange (from episode 40):
Grant: I-I understand that. I just thought. Just something that just occurred to me. Hey Dood.
Dood: Yeah?
Grant: Why did you kill those two guys?
Dood: Because I love you so much and I wanted to protect you.
Grant: Okay. That's all I wanted to know.
In which Grant is still making excuses rather than owning up to or apologizing for anything or striving to change his behavior in the future. What's great about Grant's "point" here too is that the two guards that d00d killed were absolutely unnecessary deaths, so this example does anything but work in Grant's favor.
Part 2/4: "My mother hates her body, we share the same outline"
But this is only part of the problem. As aforementioned, we learn early on and see repeated on multiple occasions that Grant thinks ill of himself to the point of believing that he deserves death, and does not want Lincoln to be anything like him.
This affects Lincoln in two major ways. Perhaps most obviously, it leaves Lincoln greatly concerned for his dad's wellbeing, which in turn acts as his main motivation for trying (and failing) to get Grant to explore and explain those feelings. Additionally, however, Grant's self-loathing also has a passive but deeply damaging effect on Lincoln's self-worth. The most important indication of this is when Lincoln says:
"Okay. Look, Scary, I just... You know what? I don't even care. I just needed a friend and I don't know… I don’t know what you're going through, but… no, my dad always said you can't love somebody unless you love yourself, right? Well, last time I asked him if he loved himself, he… He doesn't. So… I don't know, so maybe he doesn't love me either. And you seem to know what that's like, and, you're my friend! You're dealing with these things and I'm just here. I just, I don't know! I don't love myself either! I don't know! But I know that more people will die if we can't do this together, and you're the only person, like, in this group— I mean you guys are, I mean— [sighs] Look, you can go. I'm not going to stop you. You go if you want to go. I'm done."
Also classic Lincoln move to say he doesn't care then proceed to hug Scary through an Eldritch Blast. In this essay, on why people misuse the word "apathy" in applying it to Lincoln,
Though the issue comes up again in a less obvious but very interesting way when Lincoln says that:
Tumblr media
Which I assume probably seems pretty out of left field. To explain a bit what I'm trying to get at here, consider the following scenario:
Your parent, who you care about immensely, possesses certain qualities (say, idk, intrusive thoughts or mood swings or delusional thoughts or *something*) that they possess great shame over, and truly, wholeheartedly believe makes them "evil" or unlovable or even outright deserving of death. Of course, you do not believe that your parent is any of these things, it hurts to see that they feel this way about them-self, so you try your best to support them, even if you know deep down that you are their child and this should not be your responsibility. Your parent does not see the effect that their mental state is having on yours, does not take your voices of concern seriously, and mostly leaves you feeling like you are talking to a wall.
This hurts already, but it gets worse. You are your parent's child, and you are human, and so you inevitably find yourself with some of the characteristics that your parent loathes so much in them-self. Maybe you have similar thought patterns. Maybe you've made similar mistakes. Your parent doesn't love them-self because of these qualities that you now see in yourself, so how can you be sure that they do not hate you for them too? Do they believe that you deserve to die for these things as well? Your parent obviously assures you to the contrary, after all, they love you more than anything. But your parent fails to offer any meaningful line of distinction between their flaws and yours (after all, there isn't one, not really), and continues to assert that, unlike you, they really do deserve to die. Your parent is a hypocrite, and their reassurance does little to convince you.
Hopefully that makes some sense. With regards to the "dreams about killing my dads" part, mostly what I'm trying to say is that these dreams, while certainly very different from Grant's conscious thoughts about violence, still tread the line of mimicking them to some degree, and Grant's "I deserve to die because of how my brain works, don't be anything like me because that's bad!" really doesn't leave Lincoln with a healthy way to process and interpret this fact about himself, even if these dreams don't actually say anything about who he is as a person.
Anyways all that to say, on multiple levels Grant's unwillingness to even try to love himself and treat himself better has been having effects on his son that he can't even begin to realize, in addition to everything discussed in the first bit.
"But baba," I hear you say, "what about Marco? Why has Lincoln seemingly disowned both of his dads?"
Part 3/4: Three is the loneliest number
Well, I think there's a couple things going on here. For one thing, I think in a sense Lincoln sees his dads as kind of a "package deal", which is to say that from his pov disowning Grant means Marco would have to pick a side, and though it pains him immensely (as we see evidence of on several occasions), Lincoln would ultimately rather give up Marco than have Grant be left alone without either of them, because he will always love and care about Grant, and because he's selfless that way.
Additionally, for a good long while, Lincoln doesn't actually appear to harbor any resentment towards Marco:
Tumblr media
However, this later part of the season has brought with it a new wave of disillusionment, and in its wake Lincoln has finally come to question the last major issue characterizing his relationship with his parents: social isolation.
We have known from basically the first episode of the season that Lincoln has lived a very isolated, lonely life, and that the only reason he's even going to public high school now is because he finally convinced Grant to let him:
Tumblr media
As a side note, I have seen discussion of the fact that since Lincoln was rescued from the Titanic, it's possible that he was homeschooled solely because he did not legally exist. The above statement from Matt seems to work against this theory, in addition to the fact that if Lincoln was missing legal papers to get into elementary school... That would also prevent him from going to high school. Also, I mean. If you actually were to find an abandoned baby there's a whole legal process you're supposed to go through, and since Lincoln surely wouldn't have any close blood relatives around, that would still leave the possibility for Grant and Marco to adopt him legally if they wanted to (and if they chose not to go through said process, that's kind of on them?). Which isn't to say that this theory is out of the question, but in any case being homeschooled is one thing, whereas the actual degree of social isolation Lincoln goes through growing up is way more than just that, as we will delve into.
Now, we know that Grant eventually puts an end to Lincoln and Normal seeing each other on the basis that Lark and Sparrow are dangerous, which... Itself is actually fair tbh, in particular given what we now know about Hero. Not fair to Lincoln or Normal, obviously, but understandable. Much less acceptable, is the fact that Lincoln actually grows up without any friends his age whatsoever:
Tumblr media
We understand of course that the motives behind this extreme social isolation are not malicious or otherwise done with ill-intent, but that doesn't make this even remotely okay! Of course then Lincoln is very clingy and perhaps even territorial over his dads, to the point where one of his biggest fears is his parents having another child who would take some of their attention away from him- they've created an environment in which they are basically all he has!
As a direct result of this, Lincoln gets lonely very easily, and when he finally does make some friends of his own, he will do anything and everything for them, even if it means risking his own life (at least then he isn't alive and lonely!)
Tumblr media
This is also why Lincoln is so especially distraught after the loss of Mr. Kicks, a digital avatar whom he considered his best (and only) friend.
Additionally, Lincoln's fear of returning to his lonesome childhood creates an unfortunate scenario in which he cannot be honest with his dads about the fact that he is being bullied at school
Tumblr media
Even though that is definitely the case (and in fact we see it first-hand on many occasions), because to do so would run the risk of his dads taking him out of public school, and that, to him, is worse.
Lincoln beginning to view this aspect of his childhood (the isolation but also the over-protectiveness and overbearing attitude more generally) for what it is is why Matt's intros have recently shifted from "schooled at home" to "schooled in prison", in addition to pretty directly saying that high school was like heaven compared to his home life (in episode 40), and I don't think Lincoln is even remotely in the wrong for looking back at his isolation and thinking "hey, even if you had good intentions, that was kind of fucked up actually, and I need to distance myself from you for my own sake."
Not that Lincoln wanting freedom from his overbearing dads is a new thing! I mean apart from what one can logically infer from Lincoln convincing Grant to let him go to public school, Matt does drop a bunch of telling details here and there such as Lincoln's favorite sound being "the silence of being home alone and free". It's just that now is when these feelings are finally starting to come to the surface.
It is also something that Lincoln naturally would hold against both Grant and Marco, because they are both aware of and responsible for this aspect of his upbringing (whether Marco acted actively or as an enabler in the matter notwithstanding- though I would look no further than both Grant and Marco getting red cards the one time they tried letting Lincoln play soccer with other kids to observe how that family dynamic plays out), hence feeling the need to cut himself off from the both of them in order to set a long-overdue boundary. That said, to be honest with you, I really don't think he's actually all that upset with Marco, and would mostly just like to see him again.
If the events of the Titanic help to ease any aspect of Lincoln's frustration, it would be this one. Not in the sense that it magically makes what Lincoln went through growing up okay, but it does still recontextualize Grant and Marco's degree of overbearingness and (part of) why they are how they are, and I absolutely think that Lincoln would have sympathy for that.
So, where does that leave us?
Part 4/4: What remains (+ the case study of Scary)
"But baba," you say, "Grant and Marco are not just their mistakes! They've both done so many things right as parents, and they love Lincoln more than anything!"
I turn to you, tears in my eyes. "I know," I say, "I know, but that does not contradict or erase the fact that they have inadvertently hurt Lincoln in many, many ways, and he has a right to be upset with them, and express that, and set boundaries if he feels the need to."
You sigh. "So do you think Grant is a good dad or a bad one?" you ask.
I shake my head. "He's just... He's just a dad. A dad who's had a rough swing of things from the beginning. He never meant to hurt Lincoln, and I truly believe he's got a good heart, but I want to see him try harder. I need to see him try harder than he currently is to better himself, for Lincoln's sake as much as his own."
Is... More or less how I feel. I absolutely agree that as a parent Grant obviously gives a shit, and my intention here is absolutely not to say "hey actually, Grant is awful!"
As I mentioned at the very beginning of this essay, however, collectively I have found over the course of the season that Lincoln's trauma and struggles have gone severely understated and undermined, sometimes to the point of even turning him into the bad guy or depicting him as acting dramatic for a decision that I think was very brave of him, actually. So... It does feel necessary to me to point out that, as much as I care about Grant and recognize that he's suffered immensely too, he's still made a lot of mistakes over the course of the season, and still has a lot of room to grow as a person.
As things currently are, I would not blame Lincoln if he did not forgive Grant by the end of the season. Do I think that's what's gonna happen? No lol.
If you'll excuse a mini side-tangent, because for now I don't really want to make this a separate post, the mid-season evolution of Lincoln and Scary's relationship is actually a great case study for Lincoln's capacity for forgiveness, in addition to his inability to give up on people:
Tony Pepperoni's murder is, I would argue, an attack against Lincoln most personally (relative to the other teens). Aside from Lincoln having the strongest pacifistic tendencies of the group, it's in his home, it's in front of Marco, as established in the 3rd section Tony Pepperoni, by virtue of having been over for dinners at the Li-Wilson household before, is someone Lincoln knows more personally than the other teens and one of the only people in his life he could have possibly approximated to a friend. Most importantly though, Scary goes behind Lincoln's back in letting Willy out and disclosing the location of the party, and that is a significant breach of trust.
So Lincoln kicks Scary out of the house (and more or less out of the group by extension) because protecting the others from her is the most important thing at that point in time (sound familiar?). For the next bit, Lincoln's behavior towards Scary becomes a juggling act of keeping a close eye on her to make sure she doesn't cause more harm (and yes, it's also when they are meanest with each other), but also keeping a close eye on her to look after her (a notable example of this being that he doesn't leave her behind in the hall of mirrors, even when it would have been easier and perhaps even "beneficial" to do so in the context of the anchor quest).
And yet despite all the mutual hostility, Lincoln without question also fights the hardest to get Scary back. He breaks the pick as a sign of trust (and as Freddie put it: "that's love babeeey") and to show her she's welcome back in the group, follows through on this decision despite the fact that it creates a temporary rift between him and the others (Normal and Taylor) who oppose her return (perhaps a good time to also say as a reminder that Lincoln was the most against letting Willy out in the first place), breaks a door down to protect her from Willy even when everyone else in the house treats him as crazy for doing so, refuses to fight Scary when she goes on the offense, and hugs her through a god damn eldritch blast because he can't let her leave and hurt more people but still cares about her to the point that he would literally choose to die before hurting her or giving up on fighting for her. Like, if that's not love and forgiveness, I don't fucking know what is. This in addition to him encouraging the others to go easy on her and otherwise looking out for her past that point.
Tumblr media
So do I think Lincoln Li-Wilson has it in him to forgive Grant in spite of it all? That is a resounding yes from me. Will the events of the Titanic facilitate this if only by painting Grant's situation in a more sympathetic light and showcasing some of his virtues? Totally, I mean, there's a reason Anthony decided to make the arc go this way. But will I be a bit disappointed if this forgiveness comes without any major growth on Grant's part? Also. Also yes yeah.
MM. I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW TO END THIS ONE TBH. Heh. Well, thank you for one thing, for taking the time to read a post this long. If you're reading this not too long after I posted it I am most definitely pacing around rn going "oh god they hate it!" but uh. Well that's a me problem lol. Anyways, I hope this proves to be at least somewhat insightful? ...Yeah no apart from that I really am struggling to end this properly and honestly I'm real sleepy lol so I'll just say again (whether you agree with the points listed here or not) THANKS FOR HEARING ME OUT Y'ALL AND TAKE CARE.

I wanna do age headcanons cus im bored:
i’ll start with kids (also including the adult ages too, so adding 25 years)
Lark and Sparrow- just barely turned 12 before the realms. they would be 37 in s2.
Grant- turned 13 also very recent before the realms. he sometimes forgets he’s 13 and says he’s 12. this is just a way for me to justify him saying he’s 13 during for knights. he would be 38 in s2.
Nick- i wanna say he’s the oldest but that’s just me projecting. i’m saying he turned 14 in the realms. im saying glenn was in prison on his birthday and nobody remembered but him. okay- he would be 39 in s2
Tj- 12 going on 13. idk i like making tall people really young it’s fun to me. he would be 37 as well in s2.
idk they’re all like junior high age.
Dads:
Henry- 39. mainly because of the whole 20 years since he saw his dad. i’m saying he just rounded up one year. (physically like 20 but dresses his age.)
Darryl- pretty sure he’s canonically 37. since he broke his arm when he was 36 and matt said that was last year.
Glenn- Canonically 36 at the start, 54 at the end. Meth Bay Prison Blues you will always be famous to me.
Ron- 45. making him the same age of my mom. he was born in 1974 according to me. that way willy dies in the 80s.
Teens (pretty self explanatory):
Scary- 16, sophomore age idk
Normal- also 16
Link- 17. is a year older since he was homeschooled.
Taylor- Anywhere between 16 and 19. the whole thing with him being 19 is really funny but i think he’s just 16. i’ll probably make jokes about it later.
Hermie- was 2
Odads-
Willy- died at 56. Im assuming he was around 9 in Atmod. i’m also assuming ron was about 12 when willy died. willy would have died in 1986, making him 56.
Barry- 60. he’s still aging. he had henry kinda young cause cmon- he lives in a forest and runs a cult-
Bill- had glenn around 32. died when glenn was 15. im making him carry on the live fast die young gene. died at 47. i think it’s fun if glenn outlives him. [christine is much older than him. (10 years) and i’m happy about that]
Frank- Really atmod messes with the timeline so much 😭 he would’ve had to be born in 1940. darryl was born in 1982, which already makes frank 42, which isn’t that bad. at 18 years to that for the college stuff, frank died at 60- which actually lines up with darryl quite well, since matt made a joke about darryl likely not living past 60. THEM FAMILY GENES!!!
and for the spouses just assume about the same age as them. i’m not writing more🤭
oh and hero is 18

Your favorite dndads ships and what they say about you (teens edition):
Gothcleats (scary and Lincoln): You believe in the inherent eroticism of sharing a hobbie. Simultaneously enabling each other and driving each other to improve. Of offering patience and understanding. Of knowing that it's not words that matter, it's actions. And of understanding truths about the other without them being spoken. Also, you don't know how to express your feelings.
Swiftli (taylor and Lincoln): You believe in the inherent eroticism of guys being dudes and that a rock solid, ride-or-die friendship is the best foundation for a relationship. You have at one point been in love with your best friend.
Anti hero (hero and taylor): you LOOOOVE when two mfs have stupid beef w/ each other. You think watching anime is like,,, a LITTLE bit sexy. You think they're both fucking losers and you wanna push them together like stuffed animals and make them kiss.
Gothweeb (Taylor and scary): you recognize the inherent eroticism of those boomer, "I hate my wife" comics and think that's a god teir dynamic and it would be soooo funny if they kissed about it. Also, you probably have read homestuck.
Marloak (Scary and normal): oh you fuckin HATE hermie unworthy. And you know what? Based. You think fucked up parallels and narrative foils could be turned into something to bond over if they would just give it a chance. You really just want them both to be fucking happy and really who can blame you?
Oakworthy (Normal and hermie): you REALLY just want normal to be happy. You probably think hermie unworthy is misunderstood/over-overhated. The will-they-won't-they is literally killing you. You are probably autistic.
Oakswift (Normal and taylor): You think jealously is just the first step to a meaningful relationship and that the least hygienic boys in the group should kiss each other far away from everyone else. Also I literally forgot about this one and had to add it in later so idk what that says about this ship but it says something.
Oakli (Normal and Lincoln): You believe in the inherent eroticism of two people with absolutely zero chemistry. You probably really liked Henry/Darryl and are trying to re-ride that high.
Kickworthy (Lincoln and hermie): You think one-sided hatred is hot and is just the beginning of an enemies to lovers arc. Also, you probably think Lincoln has enough of a backbone to not just put up with hermies shit like normal does so they'd be a better pair.
Drama queens (Hermie and scary): You think theater kids should bang because they're too obnoxious for anyone else to be forced to put up with.

What pjo cabin do we think the dndads teens would be in?
I think Taylor in Hermes makes so much sense
Linc would be in Nike I think
Normal as an Apollo kid makes sense but maybe it’s too obvious & there’s a more fitting (sadder) option (Oizys??)
And for Scary I’m not too sure but her being an Aphrodite kid is so funny to me
If Hermie was a demigod he’d be the child of Dionysus for sure BUT I think him being a mythical creature like a Satyr would be cool too because when Satyrs die they turn into a flower or whatever and you can never see them again

okay so i decided i didn't really want to work on this anymore when i have too many other ideas and im terrified for next episode as it is so. uh. you know it was really really easy to figure out how normal could've died in ep46? it was really easy. anyways
~~
scary never should’ve egged on this fight.
when it was just taylor and normal, it was a little funny. just hours before, they had all been at each other’s throats, and despite the tension, scary knew they would never hurt each other– not seriously, anyways. with how quickly link jumped to help taylor, it was only natural that scary would slide to normal’s side, reach through the bars to squeeze his hands in support, but it still didn’t feel real. if normal and taylor did actually fight each other, surely their dads would find a way to stop the fight before it turned into a death match, or one of them would think of something, or…
…by the time it does feel real, it is too late, and all scary can do is watch taylor tumble out of the cage alone, leaving a small, cornered normal alone against two fully grown men who could very easily kill any one of them, let alone their healer.
normal, to his own credit, doesn’t seem bothered in the slightest. perhaps that was something scary should’ve been afraid of– how willing normal was to stay behind in that cage, to hype up the crowd of people who weren’t disgusted at all by the usage of child soldiers in their puppet game.
scary knows normal well now. when she looks at him, she only sees herself– reckless, desperate. not afraid to die.
and unlike any situation they had been in before, the threat to his life was, perhaps, a bit too great to have such a wild disregard for it.
link looks conflicted. scary only glimpses at him shortly, but he’s worrying at his bottom lip, arms folded across his chest as he paces around the cage, following normal’s movement. taylor is the opposite– he backs away slowly, like he’s only now realized how much danger he was actually in and how narrowly he escaped his fate.
their families stand further away, surrounded by the fbi. hermie and dood are watching the fight standing together– hermie’s arms are also crossed, his gaze too clouded for scary to read, while dood paces around, fidgeting with their hands. scary should probably say something to the both of them, but she doesn’t linger, immediately twisting back to the fight.
maybe normal was onto something in trying to get jodie. normal’s dad and uncle were clearly trying to get out of the precarious situation they were in, but what if that wasn’t enough?
“taylor,” scary says half under her breath, just loud enough to catch his attention. “take hermie and dood and go find jodie. link and i will stay here.”
“but…” taylor hesitates. however, he must see just how serious scary is being in her eyes, because he nods and then salutes. “okay. we’re on it, boss.”
usually, scary doesn’t like being referred to as the leader. however now, it only sinks right to her stomach– when she did become the one making decisions about their lives?
if link notices that scary’s taking charge, he doesn’t say anything, but scary is fairly positive he’s not paying her any mind.
scary finally, finally drags her attention back to the fight just in time to watch normal get sucker punched into the ground by the marine guy, right dead center of the cage. he doesn’t get back up.
scary’s heart drops into her chest.
“link, can you reach him?” she frets, stepping close enough to the bars that she can feel the heat coming off of them. “i don’t– i don’t have any healing spells, i’m not–”
“i have lay on hands, but i have to touch him to make it work.” link grimaces, and he twists his shoulder, leaning in the precarious gap between the lava bars even though there is absolutely no way he’d ever fit. “i can’t– he’s too far away. why didn’t he stick to the sides like we said?”
scary has an inkling of a feeling for why normal would be more concerned with his own schemes than with anything that her and link have asked of him. she doesn’t voice it.
none of her spells can do anything. for a moment, scary wonders if she can far step into the cage, if only to carry normal to the cage’s edge so that link’s spellcasting might actually work. she’s never actually used far step before, and as she squints her eyes in concentration, dread sinks into her stomach.
she’s not fast enough. by the time she’s settled on using far step versus any of her other spells, abraham lincoln punches himself instead of his target, and the marines guy uses the opportunity to slip away from the ex-president and stand ominously over normal’s crumpled form, hands balled into fists.
don’t you dare, scary thinks, and her spell switches. instead of far stepping into the cage, she summons fire to her palms, directs it at the space between normal and the marines guy. she… isn’t sure why this is her first thought, the panic settling over her as normal lurches away from the wall in a way that cannot be natural, the marines guy merely jumping through it instead of being cut off.
fuck. fuck fuck shit fuck–
they’re still too far away, and now scary can’t see them, the flames roaring and keeping the former president locked out of the fight instead of isolating normal, and scary can’t end the spell early so all she can do is run around the side of the cage, desperately trying to keep eyes on what is going on.
the marines guy barely looks affected by the wall. in comparison, normal looks small, miserable, his hoodie so singed it’s not even blue anymore, and before she knows it, there are tears pooling into scary’s eyes. this wasn’t how it was supposed to go at all. how did they get here?
behind them, normal’s uncle has a gun sliding out of his belt, and normal’s dad looks sickly pale, gaze switching between agent shmegan and the fight. scary can’t blame him, but she does push through a seed of resentment– why isn’t he helping? can’t he do anything?
she doesn’t have the time to focus on the adults. instead, her hand finds link’s own as they press close to the smouldering bars of the cage, link once again trying desperately to reach out and grab for normal’s broken form.
the marines guy kneels. for a moment, he glances up and his gaze meets the two of them, and all scary sees is an unwavering confidence, like he knows he can end this fight in a heartbeat.
please, scary mouths. she tries to say the words out loud, but all that comes out is a choked breath as an unholy combination of nausea and fear collects in her lungs. he’s just a kid. don’t do this.
if the guy understands her silent pleas, he ignores them, glancing away from the teens to place hands on either side of normal’s neck. scary understands what he’s doing immediately.
and she can’t look away. she couldn’t look away when terry was shot, and she finds herself trembling, her toes curling, and still she cannot look away as the guy takes normal’s head into his palms and twists.
there’s a horrible cracking sound, and everything goes quiet.
someone might be talking. link’s hand feels tight and heavy in her own, and scary wishes she could hear anything over the dull ringing in her ears, the way the heat from the lava bars and her own stupid fucking fire spell prickles at her skin makes her want to melt into the ground and never return, her heart is in her stomach and her veins are icy and none of this feels real.
the cage disappears. as soon as the lava is gone, scary surges forwards only partially out of her own will– link pulls her along, his grip on her hand tight, and they both go running, running, running, until link drops besides normal and scary follows.
normal looks… bad. his clothes are grey from ash and soot, there is blood coating his nose and trailing from his mouth, half of him is covered in grotesque burns in a way that would almost be ironic if those burns weren’t scary’s own fault from her own spell, and the other half is so bruised parts of his skin look dented. worse than that though, worse than all of the damage, is the angle his head sits at– crooked, wrong, like a ragdoll that was accidentally left in the washing machine too many times.
with a trembling hand, scary presses fingers into the crux of normal’s neck as link’s free hand glows white.
nothing. she feels nothing. he’s not moving. he’s not breathing. and even link’s magic pulses around him and then fades with barely a change. normal doesn’t magically start breathing. he just… lays there.
dead. he’s dead. the cage is gone because the marine guy won, because normal is dead.
scary wants to throw up.
link’s hands stop glowing and he draws backwards, his expression constricting. behind them, the guy who murdered normal is getting crowned king of hell, and scary knows they need to do something about that, need to help, but…
…but she’s frozen here. she gently nudges normal’s head into her lap, trying not to make the broken bones in his neck any worse, and she combs fingers through his hair, swallowing back a sob that rises in her throat.
this is her fault. she helped do this. she encouraged it. she wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t smart enough to think a way out of it, couldn’t even get him to trust her enough to confide in her and now he’ll never confide in her again because just like terry, he is dead.
around her, a war is starting. scary hardly notices the way demons show up, or the way the military fires on them. she barely notices her surroundings at all. all she can focus on is the feeling of greasy, oily hair in her hands, her breaths coming in short, uneven as she stifles another sob.
eventually, she’s shaken out of her stupor by the form of someone dropping down next to her. when did link leave? she hadn’t noticed link standing until now.
the person who joins her isn’t link. it’s normal’s dad– scary can tell him apart by the glasses primarily, but also in the way he desperately reaches for normal, hands shaking. scary doesn’t have the heart to tell him that it’s useless, though she does resist the urge to scream at him.
normal’s dad’s hands glow a sickly pale green. the magic sputters out before it even touches normal. “my baby,” he whispers, voice cracking. “come on, we gotta– we have to leave, lark is getting hold of their portal gun, if we hurry maybe my magic can–”
scary doesn’t know how he still has hope, even after seeing the broken, beaten form of his son. still, she nods, letting him scoop normal into his arms before dragging herself to her feet.

okay so AS A DIE HARD GOTHCLEATS SHIPPER hearing about how scermie being cannon is... im in denial- now i dont sub to their patreon BC IM BROKE so i havent heard scarys album :( BUT FROM SEEING ALL THE POSTS ABOUT THEM APPARENTLY PINING OVER EACHOTHER WHAT????? okay but like it makes NO SENSE TO ME BC THEY HAVE LIKE NO CHEMISTRY TOGETHER???? like what makes me ship gothcleats is bc its sorta obvious that they secretly have a crush on eachother even if they both don't realise it (and if you say that gothcleats doesnt have chemistry ill prove you wrong bc ive been writing down every time there has been any hinting at gothcleats and omg is there a lot) and hermie x scary was very one sided that also faded away? like hermie liked normal at the end... he admited it? i bet that the crush hermie had on scary was a "hallway crush" and that when he got to know her (and the group) he started to like normal more and that crush on scary faded... now this is a headcannon that makes sense to me so you have the right to believe in what you want to believe in BUT LIKE CMON HELLO??? now idk if this has been said in teentalk or any other content i dont have access to but i think the players don't want gothcleats to be cannon (asides from will bc of all the things normal has said about them) because its awkward for the players characters to date as the players have their own relationship, like matt has a daughter- so its weird BUT OBVIOUSLY IM THINKING OF THE CHARACTERS SEPARATELY FROM THE PLAYERS LIKE IF THEY WERE IN A STORY AND NOT A DND CAMPAIGN so do i think that this album maybe sorta tried to get that idea out of peoples heads so people would stop shipping linc and scary BUT THATS JUST A THEORY BC IM A LITTLE (more then a little maxie cmon...) SALTY AND ANNOYED AND CONFUSED ABOUT THIS SCERMIE SHIT AS IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE, SCARY OBVIOUSLY DOESNT LIKE HERMIE AND YOU CAN TELL BY HOW SHE ACTS WHENEVER HE TRYS TO FLIRT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT plus i also love oakworthy and to me thats cannon so this scermie shit doesnt make sense so im going to deny it
anyways sorry for me ranting

Tell us more about Doodler Normal Kinetic i beg of you
First thing to note: Doodler Boss Normal would not survive contact with Canon Normal
Tumblr media
Cause the thing with this version of Normal, I think, is that the situation to create it is so specific; and in a way that I've never thought about before, for a narrative? I'm sure it exists somewhere, because what story framework doesn't already exist somewhere but like.
this version of Normal only happens in a world where all 4 anchors are broken with violence and not a single other person is questioning that decision by the end. (which I don't think is going to happen! for the record!) in this world, Normal presents himself as a last bastion of empathy, but where in any other story that would look like a shining knight with their Chosen One sword and shield and righteous strength, in this story it looks like a kid ready to turn into an eldritch monster because the eldritch monster is the only other creature he can find that makes any sense to him. a character who, written in words, is a paragon hero who's virtues refuse to crumble. but because of the Ao3 CSS skin of the world he's in, he gets all the style and flair and trappings of a villain.
(which, again, I don't have reason at the time of this writing to think that this situation would happen; that there isn't going to be at least one other person on Normal's side. It's all but impossible to predict any of these kids and I think they all have good hearts, even Scary. Link right now is an unsettled weather vane in a storm, Taylor for all his swagger doesn't seem on the side of brutality, and then like... Hermie???)
that said! In a world where sometimes you can't decide if you want to sit in your disappointment or scream at the top of your lungs, there's falling back on your new frienemy-of-the-family monster bro
Tumblr media
(anyone with a writing bug and time, feel free to use any, all, or none of these ^^)
for thoughts on where this AU would end up, anyone can obviously take it anywhere but I know the version I would make would have a happy ending (I am allergic to writing tragedies, sue me). I guess it would be a story where finally snapping and letting out some Oak Anger and not apologizing (because while it's not okay to be cruel it is okay to be angry) is what gets characters to come to terms with each other and better understand each other and meet each other in the middle and even come to terms with themselves and what version of expressing themselves makes them happy and comfortable and best able to love themselves and the people around them.
all of that admittedly wrapped in a gift box with the catharsis of a character saying "I'm not okay with how you're treating me" in a very badass fashion, as we all wish to do one day.
also for those of us who would die for Scary but also want to take her by the shoulders and shake vigorously there's the Rule of 3s for swiping the Goth Crown from Scary a THIRD TIME
Tumblr media
all of her put-on apathy and tiredness and lashing out but from a genuine place, simultaneously forcing her in front of a mirror and asking her to reach back for the part of herself that started the day of the debate "bright eye-ed and bushy tailed" so that she could even stand a chance at getting through to Normal??? The ways to talk about Scary skyrocket even higher. to be clear, I don't want this as a form of stealing Scary's narrative, I want it as a way of taking Scary's narrative and hitting the NOS. give her just about everything she wants, for everyone to agree with her and listen to her and think she's right and enforce the belief that she has any power over what's going on and then see if she even likes it. See if she likes herself and see how far she's willing to take the identity of goth punk seeker of darkness. ask her where the line is. show her the road she she's taking and ask her where the line is. canon parallels and connections between normal and scary are a whole other post I can have and will drive to work in the morning writing the meta in my head, the way Normal is a previous version of Scary cranked up to 11 and the way Scary makes herself into a person that Normal has every right to be but isn't becausehe'shumanandflawedbutsogoodatheartandnevergivesuponothersnotevenherandAUGH

Okay, time for my mixed feelings on Scam Likely and how nobody can escape the repetitive cycle of being an imperfect father. I’ll try to be objective as I break down the scene in Goofs Realm, but I’m in my Scam hater era.
THIS IS LONG, SORRYYYYYY
No father will be perfect in fiction or reality, and it’s a running theme of the show. The mistakes of your past define the present and the families have been constantly doomed to repeat them, but in new, fresh, fucked up ways. There are varying levels of mistakes all of them have made in the story, especially compared to Willy, but he’s his own special case.
Scam’s sin is ignorance. To the world around him and individuals’ feelings. Consistently he is shown to not realize outside of his Goofs that they can heavily affect other people in ways they do not like. That actions have consequences. His entire relationship with Jodie was a joke to him, while Jodie was left without his romantic partner a second time and was scammed out of a son (and in more ways than one since Hermie was spawned as a teenager instead of a baby). It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, and now that someone is his son and he’s dead.
“He tries to hide the fact that he is actually emotionally affect by this, but he only got a 6, so you can see that he is genuinely upset.”
In his own way, Hermie does matter to him. I think Scam is a very hard being to compare to the rest of the cast because of his Goofs realm nature. He has an entirely different set of morals and ground rules of existence. For christ sake you die forever into nothingness in Goofs Realm if you stop being funny. But now Scam is confronted with a harsh truth and he can’t deny an emotional mode outside of Silly and Laughter.
“I didn’t even think of him as something that could die. He was just a goof. Goofs never die. It’s like- all jokes are always funny forever.”
We truly see Scam’s mindset here. Be it as a Goofs native or just who he is individually, he only thinks of The Big Joke of it all. Hermie was not an individual with feelings to be loved and raised (not that he even raised him at all), Hermie was just a joke to him. And it wasn’t even in any personal way. Everything is a joke to him.
“Where is he? Is he in Hell? Is he in Heaven?”
“I don’t know! He doesn’t have a soul! He’s not like you or me. Well, not like you.
And here it’s cemented in just how irregular Hermie is. Neither him nor Scam have a soul. As much as we’ve visited dead characters on this podcast, there’s nowhere that Hermie can be reached. This incarnation of him is gone forever.
“Do you forgive me for whatever is about to happen? I’m truly going to try.”
Try as he might to make things right — in his own insane way of ‘farting and it’ll be so funny that he’ll come back’ — that’s not something that’s been allowed lately on this show. And what could he even do to make things right anyways? There’s no joke to be made when someone has passed, and no joke can bring them back.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t think it would happen like this. I didn’t think he would actually develop a personality; he was just supposed to be a Goof machine. Nobody was supposed to be sad if something happened to him.”
Again, Hermie’s existence was just a part of one big goof and scam for him. Meta and Story, Hermie is and was a joke. He was just supposed to be this silly little guy, but then as time marched on he developed into something of a person. Something a lot of us got attached to and something Normal held onto dearly. “Nobody was supposed to be sad if something happened to him”, but he became too much of a Person for that to stay true.
“I could make you another one.”
And then there’s this line. It kills me in a very specific way. Scam is just so disconnected from human nature that he doesn’t know fully realize the value an individual life holds. Yes, he could just make another Hermie, but that’s not the Hermie. To use the first metaphor that comes to mind, it’s like making a mastercopy. In a previous painting class, we studied a singular painting for one project and recreated it to the best of our abilities. As skilled as one can be in painting, you cannot truly recreate the original. There’s history imbued in the original, and it’s lived a lifetime before your own version was created. Even if you create a version indistinguishable from the original, it is still not the same.
All of this is to say that I cannot truly judge Scam, at least from a certain standpoint. I have very mixed feelings about him, but he’s a unique case of a character that’s very different than judging one of the human dads. Am I rambling here? Am I spouting nonsense? I don’t know, I’m still in distress over crying multiple times from this episode. I’m not proof reading this lol

i knew the hermie death acknowledgement was going to be bad. but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST i didn't think it would be LIKE THAT. i was NOT prepared for will to hit me with the "wait where's hermie" RIGHT OFF THE BAT??? and then normal couldn't leave hermie behind and he tried to save them and he was LITERALLY USING BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS TO BRING HERMIE BACK AND IT DIDN'T FUCKING WORK. I AM GOING TO BE SICK.
and then. dear GOD. i was not ready for henry's return. fuck. ok real talk ARE THEY IN OAKVALE. DID HENRY LEAVE AFTER CODE PURPLE AND GO BACK TO OAKVALE. I AM BEATING MY HEAD AGAINST A WALL. also MERCEDES?????? MY BELOVED??? what the FUCK

and don't even get me fucking STARTED on the funeral. god. i was in physical pain. the shade witch bit (which was fucking GOLD btw) couldn't save me from the 1-2 PUNCH THAT WAS THE FINAL WORDS. henry saying you're never ready for something like this but normal insisting on burying the body. the fucked up two-face tree. "goodnight sweet prince." scary saying she noticed him. scary noticing hermie like she noticed terry jr. no one fuckng touch me.
LARK AND SPARROW AND HENRY INTERACTING. AAAGH. FUCK. THE HANDSHAKE BETWEEN HENRY AND LARK. LIKE. IS THAT THE MOST POSITIVE INTERACTION THEY'VE HAD SINCE THE ROGUE CARD??? IS COLD NEUTRALITY THE BEST THEY HAVE?????? and SPARROW GOING IN FOR A HUG BUT HENRY DOESN'T RECIPROCATE. I AM GOING TO BE FUCKING SICK. THE OAK FAMILY ONCE AGAIN GOING FOR MY GODDAMN THROAT.

📚📚📚!! I’d love to hear your fic ideas (if you’re still doing it obv)
ummm okay so I have this disease where I was a theatre kid in middle school and thus most of my music taste is still musicals and I sort it all by character playlists SO I end up think about a lot of musical aus with dndads characters because I’m sick in the head. None of these are really that thought out enough, more free association between characters so yeah. I present to you: a multitude of dndads teens musical aus
in the spirit of nerdy prudes cast album coming out in like a week, link and scary are so Steph and Peter coded it’s nuts. If you don’t know what nerdy prudes must die is, Peter Spankoffski is a nerd who has been ostracized for years due to an unfortunate incident and unflattering nickname and Stephanie Lauter is the cool girl who gets him to help her cheat on a test and then asks him to study with her. When he gets beat up, she sticks up for him and yeah, they’re so gothcleats it’s crazy, there’s even one song later in the musical that’s SOOOOO. Normal and Taylor would take the place of Ruth and Richie who are Peter’s nerdy friends (Richie is literally just Taylor and Normal in one character, he is an anime kid who is also the mascot) idk who would be grace and max, or where hermie would fit in but yeah!
then, rise of the pink ladies au, I mean there’s four of them and one of them has a theatre kid love interest come on. Link is the starry eyed new kid who gets humiliated on the first day and decides to start running for school president, scary is the prickly girl who is being manipulated by a teacher (Willy), Taylor is the big dreamer who’s kind of a wacko, and Normal is the one who doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere and has an emotionally detached theatre kid love interest who he messes everything up with, and it’s the 50s! I’m most likely to actually write this one or something in this universe
last one, a while ago I had a gay teen beach movie au idea where scary and normal get transported into the movie and meet hermie and Erica who they get big crushes on, but oakworthy has been taking nothing but Ls recently and I’m honestly not super passionate about scerica so this one may not ever happen (also I thought of it right before stand and delivery, which kinda killed the vibe)
I hope you enjoyed these silly ramblings, I’m going to bed

A Start
CO-WRITTEN BY @silverlistenstothings
After hearing about Hermie’s reaction to the news about Nicky, Cassandra and Hermie have a chat.
Part 17 of The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Roommates
ao3
Hermie was avoidant at the best of times, but it’s only gotten worse since the Arcade Incident. Where she used to see him for a few minutes at a time before he could dismiss himself in a slightly more subtle way, now Cass would only catch glimpses of him before he skittered off to the safety of his room, even if that meant abandoning Taylor or whatever else he was doing downstairs. It was worrying , so much so that even Taylor seemed to be able to tell.

On the day she tells Taylor about Nicky, his first priority is running upstairs to tell Hermie. When he returns from his room half an hour later, his enthusiasm has noticeably dwindled. He wanders down the stairs, sits down beside Cass, and curls into her side.

“What’s the matter, honey?” Cass asks, throwing her arm around his shoulders. He huffs, chewing at his lower lip as he seems to ponder his answer.

“I’m worried about Hermie,” he admits. “They seemed to think we were gonna kick them out so Nicky could move in? And they were like—really freaked out about it.”

Oh. Yeah, that seems to line up with everything Cass has seen from him (them? Probably them, as that’s what Taylor has used to refer to them every other time except for at the library. Another thing to ask about, Cass supposes).

“I don’t want them to move out.” Taylor explains. “I like having them around, but I don’t know why they seem to—it’s like they don’t believe me when I tell them that. They’re usually really good at reading people, so I don’t know why they seem to think I don’t like them?”

“I don’t think it’s your fault, baby,” Cass assures, hugging him a little bit closer when his voice starts to pitch up nervously. “I think they have their own stuff going on that makes it hard for them.”

“Yeah, they do,” Taylor agrees, but he doesn’t seem relieved. “I don’t know how to help them.”

“It’s not your responsibility to. You’re just a kid too, you know.”

Cass ruffles his hair, and hates how much it feels like a lie. He is just a kid, but he’s been forced to grow up far too fast. He still seems a lot more like the son she knew than Lincoln and Normal, from what she remembers about them before and has seen from them now, but he’s still different. Different in the little horns that push their way through his hair and the scar around his neck, different in the constant glances around the room and the haunted look he gets in his eyes far too often. It's not that he's lost his spirit—Cass knows this as something that can never die—but it's… dimmed. It's quieter, scared, more uncertain. Taylor's always been clingy and cuddly, but something about the way he latches onto her lately feels more like love mixed with… fear.

And it terrifies her to not know the extent of it.

“But nobody else is,” Taylor says, cutting into her thoughts. “Their parents all suck and Normal says they haven’t been responding to his texts and they said they don’t have any friends at school.”

Cass hums, equal parts understanding and sympathetic.

“I’ll talk to them, okay?” Cass offers. “Do you think they’d be up for it tonight?”

Taylor shakes his head quickly. “Probably not. They fell asleep.”

“Okay,” Cass nods.

She opens her mouth to ask if Taylor wants to be part of the conversation, but quickly thinks better of it. She knows they’re a lot more comfortable with Taylor—not that that’s saying much—but she doesn’t want to make it feel like an intervention. Besides, if even Taylor is concerned, the situation must be worse than she thought, and she doesn’t want Taylor to have to deal with whatever fallout there might be.

Yes, it’s best to do it herself, she decides. She doesn’t have to go into the studio tomorrow, so she can talk to them in the morning after Taylor leaves.

oOo

The next morning, Hermie disappears into their room the moment Taylor leaves. She waits for them to come down for school, ready to offer them a ride—conversations are always easier in the car—but they don’t. Almost an hour passes, and Cass wonders if she missed them somehow, though she figures it’s more likely that they’re still in their room.

She heads upstairs, and knocks on their door. There’s no response.

As carefully and quietly as she can, she turns the knob and opens the door. The first thing she notices is the plethora of clothes scattered across the floor between the bed and the closet. Her eyes follow the mess up to the bed, where Hermie lies, partially sitting up and staring at Cass with wide eyes—two eyes, the one that’s usually covered by the patch is a light shade of hazel with a bright green pupil. They look much like they did when Cass picked them up from the library, burn scars and horns and all. More pressingly, they look scared , not just startled but genuinely afraid. It hurts her heart a little.

“Hey, Hermie,” Cass says, deciding not to question why they’re in bed at 8:30 on a school day.

“Hello,” Hermie says, slowly sitting up fully.

Cass watches as their scars begin to shift in color, settling into a shade a bit closer to their regular skin tone. It’s not just the color that’s shifting, she realizes, it’s the skin itself, squirming uncertainly in a way that is not very pleasant to look at at all.

“Can we talk?” Cass asks, and Hermie’s face twitches before they manage to school their expression.

“Ah, yes, that’s—“ Hermie’s voice comes out frail. They clear their throat. “Yes, ma’am.”

Cass grimaces. Hermie’s eyes drop to the floor the moment the expression crosses her face.

“You really don’t have to call me that,” Cass assures. “You can just call me Cassandra. I’d prefer it over Ms. Swift, actually.”

They nod, still not looking at her.

“Where do you wanna talk?” Cass asks, as gently as she can.

Hermie’s jaw tightens, before they shrug stiffly. Cass holds back a sigh. The last thing she needs is the kid thinking she’s upset with them. They probably already do, actually.

“How about the living area between our rooms, does that sound good?”

Hermie nods, mumbling something quietly.

“What was that?”

Hermie winces, as if they didn’t expect to be heard.

“I just—I said that it—it’s not really my room, is it?” Their voice lowers as they talk, so much that Cass can barely hear the end of it. She does hear it though, and it hurts a bit even though she knows it isn’t her fault anymore than it is Taylor’s.

“That’s kinda what I wanted to talk about, actually…”

Hermie’s eyes dart up to meet hers, and all of the sudden they seem to be on the brink of tears. For a moment Cass is so taken off guard by the sheer amount of unguarded devastation in their expression that she doesn’t know what to say. She reaches for an explanation, and finds it fairly easily.

“Oh, Hermie, honey—“ she steps into their room, and they shrink back a little, squeezing their eyes shut as if bracing against a blow. Cass freezes, arms halfway extended before she crosses them over her chest. “Honey, no, I just meant that—it is your room. That’s what I meant. It's yours for as long as you want it.”

“But I don’t…” Hermie trails off. Cass waits for them to find their words, but after a few moments they close their mouth and shake their head helplessly.

“Listen, let’s talk out in the living area, okay? Take your time, I’ll be waiting.”

Cass steps back out of the room and closes the door behind her, letting out a breath. This is going to be harder than she thought. She doubts one conversation is actually going to change their mind at all, but it’s a start. Cass walks over to the chair by the window, sits down, and waits.

It doesn’t take Hermie long to peek out of their room and cautiously stalk over to Cass. Their scars and horns are gone, and the eyepatch is back in place. They changed their clothes too, into something a bit more… formal than the sweatpants and anime shirt they seem to wear most of the time.

“You can sit down if you’d like,” Cass offers, gesturing at the other chair.

Hermie slinks over to sit down, eye never leaving Cass. They carry themself like a skittish cat, ready to dart or bite back at any moment. Maybe that’s why Taylor likes them so much, Cass muses, before shaking her head and reminding herself to focus.

“Taylor told me a bit about your conversation last night,” Cass says, and Hermie dips their head, embarrassed. “I’m not going to pretend to know you very well, but I know that you’re having a hard time believing that we want you here.”

Hermie nods slightly.

“If Taylor didn’t manage to change your mind last night, I don’t think I’m going to just by telling you, but we do want you around,” Cass says.

“But I… I don’t know why,” Hermie admits, quietly as if willing Cass to ignore them. “I haven’t… haven’t made myself useful, even though I said I would.”

“You don’t need to be useful,” Cass assures gently. “You don’t have to- You’re allowed to just exist. That’s enough.”

Hermie glances up to squint at her suspiciously, but when they don’t see any tell that she’s lying, they look more confused than relieved.

“Besides,” Cass starts, changing her tactic. “You have been useful. You keep Taylor company and watch out for him, and I know he needs it after everything you’ve both been through. You cook sometimes and do the laundry, and even though you don’t need to, I do appreciate the help.”

Hermie nods, visibly relaxing just a bit. While she doesn’t want to encourage their belief that they need to justify their existence, it seems to help more than any amount of comforting words did.

“I promise, we aren’t going to force you to leave. If you decide you want to for any reason, I’ll support you, but you have a place here,” Cass says softly. She doesn’t want to overstep, both for Hermie and Taylor’s sake, but… “you’re part of this family, ok?”

Hermie looks up, mouth falling open in shock. The surprise on their face is almost comedic, before it tightens into something confused, then frightened.

“No—wait, no, I’m not— Taylor said— I promised I wouldn’t—“ Hermie stands up, stepping away. The left side of their face begins to fade back into the angry red of their scars. “I’m not— you’re not my mom!”

“I’m not saying I am!” Cass says, pushing aside the hurt at the vehemence in their voice. She stands up too, hands held up placating but unsure of what to do. She’s not entirely sure why Hermie is reacting this way, but the mention of Taylor gives her an idea. “You’re not replacing Taylor as my kid, ok?”

Hermie flinches at the words, and she knows she hit the mark.

“That’s not all that family is, I don’t have to be your mom and you don’t have to be my kid if you’re not comfortable with it, ok? I’m just saying that you’re important to me. To us.”

“I don’t…” Hermie looks up, wrapping their own arms around themself in a lonely mockery of a hug. Their eye is wide and confused, more openly vulnerable than Cass has ever seen from them. “I don’t understand…”

“I know you don’t, honey,” Cass says, itching to hug them now more than ever. “That’s okay. We’ll work on it. You belong here, and you have nothing to hide, ok?”

Hermie tilts their head at the emphasis she puts on the last few words. She taps her own forehead at the same place a horn is forcing its way out of theirs. They startle, throwing one hand up over their forehead to cover it.

“Sorry—“ Hermie stutters, ducking back.

“No, that’s exactly what I mean,” Cass says, trying to keep her tone from sounding frustrated. “Taylor has horns and a tail too, you know, it doesn’t change anything.”

“But I’m not-“ I’m not your son. You aren’t obligated to put up with me.

Even if they don’t say the words, she can guess their meaning.

“It doesn’t change anything,” Cass emphasizes, “not with him, and not with you.”

Hermie nods, slowly lowering their hand. Their horn is larger than Taylor’s, the same color as their eye and curving backwards. Cass glances at it, before returning her attention to Hermie’s face to give them a reassuring smile. Their scars are still hidden, but Cass decides not to press it for now.

“Can I ask you one more thing?”

Hermie nods, the guarded look gradually returning to their eyes.

“What pronouns do you use?” Cass asks as casually as she can manage, because it’s not a big deal and she needs Hermie to understand that. Hermie looks startled by the question regardless.

“Ah- um. Any are fine,” Hermie admits. “They/them right now, though…?”

Their voice lilts up at the end, as if it’s a question. Cass tries to reassure them with a smile.

“You’ll let us know if that changes, yeah?”

“Yeah…” Hermie agrees, nodding their head. They look completely baffled, but a bit less actively anxious.

“I’m not gonna interrogate you about it, as long as I know how to refer to you, the rest of it’s none of my business,” Cass assures, and their shoulders relax a bit. “That’s everything I wanted to talk to you about, I think, so if you have anything you want to talk about…?”

Hermie shakes their head quickly, looking all too excited to end the conversation.

“Alright,” Cass agrees. “I think I’ll run to the grocery store, if there’s anything you need me to pick up for you?”

Hermie shakes their head as expected, but when they turn to retreat to their room, Cass spots a coiled green tail tucked around their leg.

It’s a start.
