Still rewatching Med. Natalie and Manstead were toxic from the beginning. Not to mention the lack of chemistry. Also, why on earth would Connor ever into a relationship with Ava?

i was tagged by @soliloquent-stark, thank youuu 💖💖
rules: list the first line(s) of your last 10 (or however many you have) posted fics and see if there’s a pattern!
i'll be honest, i haven't written in the while so some of these might be a little clunky
deuteronomy 5:21: Steve is going to Hell. Not that he cares anymore.
like smoke rings in the air: Steve has a problem by the name of Tony Stark.
waste no part: Steve wakes up to the sun shining in his face and the smell of smoke, which means one of two things. Either someone has flash-bombed his house, or Tony's trying to cook by himself again.
act of contrition: Before the rest of the guests arrive, and the nave is still blissfully deserted, Steve drags Tony into the confessional.
bad reputation: Tony Stark, Natalie decides, is a goddamn moron.
only over you: When he arrives to Earth-8350 it's already too late; the civil war is in full swing and the superhero community has torn itself apart.
shades of cool: When Tony dies, Steve feels something inside of himself sever, like the fissuring of glass and stone.
perfect stroke: Tony had worn makeup for as long as he could remember.
this charming man: Steve woke up to a world turned on its head and a bitter taste in his mouth.
early bird: Steve had always been an early riser.
as far as patterns go, it looks like recently i've been here for the short, punchy one-liner to ease the reader into the story, which makes sense given that a lot of these fics are on the shorter side. out of all of them, i think i like bad reputation the most. something about it—the fic as a whole, really—just makes me smile
i'm also tagging @cowboyhorsegirl @meidui @herogers @arabellamonkey @robertdowneyjjr and whoever else wants to play!

hi! just wanted to say i love how in detail your lore is. it’s very well explained and i can understand it very easily so i appreciate that lot! i was wondering if you could talk abt jeff and clockys relationship? i’m curious about how you write them together and i’ve always liked their dynamic!
HIII YOURE SO KIND THANK YOU SO MUCH im glad u can understand it easily cuz ik i do a lot of run on sentences.... OK I WILL TALK NOW
ok. ok. jeff and clocky came around the story around the same time the rest of the creeps did. right after clocky was released from the operator, she was running on rage and exhaustion.
jeff is still teetering between the operator and slenderman because he doesnt want to commit to the full process(?), since it's really painful and can take months. and he doesnt care to. but occasionally he'll take a few of the proxy's pills so he can maintain some control over himself, mostly by force tho.
they kinda both got thrown into the same barn by slenderman. clocky cant afford an apartment, jeff . . cant work. when masky or hoody force jeff to take a slender sickness pill every now and again, he like half dies for a couple days in the barn. natalie understands the pain esp cuz it happened to her most recently. so she kinda(very loosely) takes care of him , aka brings him water and weed . he's kinda grateful but he's just... such an arrogant asshole theyre ALWAYS arguing. she won't hesitate to kick him while he's down
but, of course, they have to coexist somehow. so they'll hang out, get high together, talk shit. he gets morbidly interested in what she remembers of her own kills, and she finds it.. oddly relieving to finally get it off her chest. she uses jeff like a confessional. she's told toby, but its really awkward. jeff is interested. he'll ask questions, get excited, all the weird shit. part of her hates it but again, who else will be so accepting of something like that ?
being around him runs the risk of triggering operator-related episodes, though, so they've gotten into trouble together.
toby doesnt like jeff and gets super aggravated at him and natalie being friends. but natalie thinks its really fucking annoying when tobys like 'u shouldnt hang around him' and tells him to shut up.
ofc nina eventually comes into the picture and jeff starts staying with her more often, leaving nat to the barn.
sometimes nat feels lonely and wishes he stuck around, but she just goes to stay with toby (when slender allows it). most of the time she's grateful he's away and can stop pissing her off all the damn time LOL
jeff is seriously just. ok ill admit i make him very one dimensional, but he literally doesnt care. sure he likes hanging out with her but like... he doesn't really do much in return for her, doesn't clean up the barn, doesn't get her anything, etc. he'll float between the barn and nina's apartment without much thought or consideration. but he'd kill someone for nat, if that means anything
generally theyre not close, but yk. theyre sometimes sorta parttime roommates every now and again.

hi elwen, i hope you're doing well <3
i was wondering if you have any poetry and/ or book recommendations?
you have such good words (both in your writing & in your super sweet ao3 comments) and i would love to steal some of those words, if possible.
Thank you so much for this lovely ask, Anon. This list could have gotten very, very long, so I've tried to concentrate on a selection of writers whose styles set off sparks in my word brain. I hope you find something here to enjoy!!!
Poetry
Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz: one of the things I love about Diaz is her figurations of the body, which sit at some seemingly impossible hinge between materiality and abstraction. Animal tails retracting like vacuum cords into clavicles, headlights looped like a lasso around hips: gorgeous, arresting images of being wrecked open by the world.
To 2040 by Jorie Graham: many of Graham's poems are long, and it's almost impossible to take an excerpt of one because the effect of any part is so entangled with the whole, and yet they also feel so shimmeringly spare - like what's on the page is a shorthand spell enchanting your brain to complete the work.
Don't Call Us Dead by Danez Smith: Smith has some of my favorite poems to teach and read aloud. The language is lyrical and prosaic, with speakers that seem deceptively confessional while also playfully, explicitly dodging simple connections. And I think "summer, somewhere" will turn out to be one of the poems of the early 21st century.
Novels
Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin: even in off-the-cuff interviews Baldwin builds sentences so beautiful they make me want to weep, and this novel is utterly devastating. I can barely get through the last pages without needing to lie down.
The Neapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante: reading these novels was the closest I've come to literally having the experience denoted by "this changed my brain chemistry." For the weeks I was absorbed in them, it was like Ferrante's language actually put me in an altered physical/mental state, like the prose was changing how I experienced my own life.
The Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson: I will recommend literally all Anne Carson ever all the time, but this verse novel in particular has so many lines that are just lodged in my spirit. Like the adjectives Carson calls "the latches of being," they pin new/old experiences of the world "to [their] place in particularity."
Beloved by Toni Morrison: similarly, in the case of Morrison I actually can't pick just one novel, but Beloved would be up in the top five contenders for the title of the American novel. Unsettling, uncompromisingly clear, full of risk and repair, and stunning on the sentence-level, as Morrison always is.
Thank you again for this wonderful ask!!! This was very fun to put together.

Partly in specific response to dissatisfaction with factional models and partly against broader reaction against the perceived failure of revisionism [...] new approaches to reconstructing a socially derived model of politics have been explored. These comprise four key aspects. First, the investigation of the relationships and interaction between people, ideas (including monarchial power, Ciceronian concepts of citizenship, republicanism, and confessionalization), and institutions, including the conventions or rules that governed them. Second, the importance of classical and Renaissance traditions which provide the political, cultural, and intellectual context for actions, methods, and ideas. Third, an exploration of how individuals presented themselves and their actions to others. This draws on Stephen Greenblatt's concept of 'self-fashioning': that individuals consciously constructed and presented a persona, for their own ends, which did not always match reality. It is important for assesing critically sources which purport to reveal straightforwardly the life or mental world of contemporary figures. Fourth, archival research of traditional sources-- letters, statutes, financial accounts, legal records, etc.-- remains central. But literary, visual, and material sources are also explored and attention is paid to contemporary uses and meanings of language.

i was also gonna ask for book recs but instead lets do... top 5 favourite songs at the moment?
OOPS i didn't see this and have given both book recs and song recs. so i will instead give you both books and songs and hopefully that makes up for it. i know you're not actually asking for book recs but i like talking about books so we're doing it
first let's just do uhhh three books:
world war z by max brooks is my favorite book of all time like point blank full stop. it's an oral history of the zombie apocalypse and it's incredible like idek what to say
hench by natalie zina walschots rewrote my brain. it's about a woman who temps as a henchman-for-hire for supervillains who is grievously injured by a superhero, and from then on makes it her mission in life to systematically destroy the heroes. if you have ever watched a superhero/action movie and thought "wow, that seems like a lot of collateral damage," i would recommend this book
the 7 1/2 deaths of evelyn hardcastle by stuart turton is an absolutely fucking bonkers mystery. our narrator has seven days to solve a murder at an elaborate dinner party, but every day he wakes up in the body of a different guest (or host) at the party. and, obviously, there's way more than meets the eye going on.
and five songs in addition to the four i posted earlier:
confessional by upstanding youth
not my time to die by joyside
hydrants by kaia kater
ghibli tears by aura bora
dangerous by big data feat. joywave

“Intrusive Thoughts” by lucyllebc
This is an Ekphrastic work. is inspired from an installation, a song, a poem, and from experience.
Tracey Emin’s My bed was a unique confessional installation of her own bed after she had undergone a series of depressive episodes after a breakup. It contained condoms, stained sheets and alcohol littered everywhere.
Natalie Jane’s song “Intrusive Thoughts” is about how one is in a relationship but have doubts on the relationship and herself. The lyric “maybe love’s not for me” interests me as it makes me think of the series of abuse and how those can make one question about their self worth.
There is a lost poem I written from experience wherein I was waiting every night for my mother to return home to confess something, but I wasn’t able to. The confession was about a series of abuse and mistreatment I received from our helpers when they are not around.
The installation is inspired of those nights lying in bed and thinking about how one can try to feel comfortable to fall asleep, despite uncomfortable circumstances. The spikes are physical manifestations of thoughts, recollections, and emotions that come in our mind after a long day, and how it can affect our comfort.
Now displayed at Gallery One, University of Fine Arts Gallery (Parola), University of the Philippines DIliman, extended until 8 February 2024.

Like if I'm being HONEST my ideal Riveradult scenario would have been Betty does hook up with Archie one night, and immediately has a crushing realization that gets therapy talk-vocalized that she's at the wrong house and Archie is all worried like "Oh do you regret what we did" and Betty is like "No! Ofc not Arch I love you it's just. Oh god there's somewhere else I should be." And she speeds out and we cut to something else of lesser importance for a minute probably and Then Veronica opens her door and Betty is there like 5x03 and they have another tearful reunion no words this time or maybe Betty starts saying something and Veronica jumps in her arms right right are you still with me? Okay and then they go inside and have their own version of a coupled off reminiscent little talk and Betty is like V I have to confess something and Veronica is like what is it B and she tries to articulate but she can't so she just PLANTS one on her and Veronica reciprocates and does the thumb on the chin thing when she kisses you know the one and then well. And then ✂️✂️✂️✂️
That's all thank you.

Titanic Rising • Weyes Blood
Favorite Track: Picture Me Better
Thoughts: Oh my God. This is such a gorgeous, artistic pop record. Natalie Mering’s voice is absolutely stunning and pulls you in from the very beginning. This album has the lush, grandiose production you’d expect from some of the biggest art-pop projects of the 80s and 90s, with a timeless feels that blends in seamlessly with them as well. The emotional core of this album has so much gravity that holds strong from the most melodramatically orchestrated songs to the most stripped down confessional ones. I absolutely get why I’ve seen so many people call this album of of the most underrated albums in recent years; I cannot recommend this enough.

August 24
Recently I’ve been attacked by Netflix on YouTube. They’ve been dropping trailers for the new movies and shows coming up. They always end up on my explore page. I’ve watched like 5 or 6 of them. The only ones I’m excited for are Wednesday Adams and Love is Blind: After the Alter. The trailers for these shows were the most entertaining. I don’t remember hearing about a Wednesday Adams show being made but I’m happy about. Jenny Ortega is playing Wednesday. She looks convincing to me. So I’ll be watching it. I think it comes out in the fall. Now Love is Blind :After the Alter trailer seemed messy. I’m glad we get to see how the Kyle + Deepti relationship happened. I need more details about this Natalie/Shane/ and Shaina drama. Like I don’t get it. I thought they weren’t talking or moved past it. Well that’s how they made it seem on the reunion episode. I’m guessing the show will film them during or after they have seen the show for themselves. That would make more sense. Everything gets more interesting with the cast once they have viewed the show for themselves. They get to see the confessionals and scenes they might not have known happened. For Iyana and Jarrett if we don’t get to see her parents reaction after finding out he proposed to Mallory first then I don’t care to see them. The rest of the cast I’m indifferent to seeing again. Let me know if y’all are going to watch😏

Audio
MIX 8: I'm Alive I'm a Mess
Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me
Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
Heather Nova - London Rain (Nothing Heals Me Like You Do)
Jennifer Paige - Crush
Laura Pausini - La mia risposta
Idina Menzel - Minuet
Anouk - Nobody's Wife
Bic Runga - Sway
Vonda Shepard - Searchin' My Soul
Donna Lewis - I Could Be the One
The Corrs - So Young
Jennifer Brown - Tuesday Afternoon
Lhooq - Losing Hand (7" Mix)
Alisha's Attic - The Incidentals
Emilia - Big Big World
The Chicks - Wide Open Spaces
Merrril Bainbridge - Lonely
Axelle Red - Mi Cafe (The Coffee Song)
Alanis Morissette - Thank U
Madonna - Mer Girl
For all my temptation to peg this mix to Lilith Fair, I must confess that I don’t actually know very much about Lilith Fair, and when I think of it, I don’t quite think of the vibe here, which I call “jagged lilt.” Less folky, more rocky, comfy on Adult Contemporary radio with occasional crossovers to alt and country. If you’d asked me in 1998 whether this kind of music would define my taste in the mid-00’s…well, I’d have stared blankly at you because I wouldn’t really understand the question. (I would also probably still be listening to Jagged Little Pill a lot and not processing that there were reasons I kept returning to it even when part of me was convinced I wasn’t supposed to like it.) But if you’d asked me in 2000 or so I’d have scoffed.
This is music I mostly experienced as wallpaper, heard more frequently in malls than the stuff I’m about to call mall rock in Mix 9; in every film and television soundtrack (Ally McBeal is represented here, along with the She’s All That introvert anthem); in cars when you just let it go to a random station; in grocery stores and gas stations and chain restaurants. But some combination of the three Women in Rock mixes (this one, Mix 5, and the upcoming Mix 11) are all of the ingredients of the teen confessional rock sound.
So now I’m bumping the hell out of this mix. I already knew Sixpence None the Richer, Natalie Imbruglia, and Jennifer Paige at the very front of my mind, found Donna Lewis, Bic Runga, the Corrs, and Heather Nova hanging out somewhere in the back of my brain. Have come around to varying degrees on post-Jagged Little Pill Alanis (Alanis Morrisette, microbiome queen!), the Chicks, and Madonna, whom I probably would have written off circa 1998. A lot of new-to-me non-US stuff: Alisha’s Attic from the UK, Laura Pausini from Italy, Merril Bainbridge from Australia, Anouk from Denmark, from Sweden Jennifer Brown and Emilia, and from France Axelle Red (discovered via People’s Pop a month or two ago, but not sounding like this) and Lhooq, whom I cannot help but report is named after the Duchamp piece and thus “should be spelled out in French: Elle a chaud au cul, which translates into She is hot in the arse. ‘Avoir chaud au cul’ is a vulgar expression implying that a woman has sexual restlessness.”
That just leaves Idina Menzel, of whom you are no doubt by now familiar, but who I did not know put out a very 1998-sounding album in, you guessed it, 1998.
