Synergy, Upcoming Strategy Game With Moebius Style Graphics
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synergy is described as a survival city building game. It's not out yet so I don't know much about how it will play, but it sounds like your people are on a strange alien planet, and you have to explore your surroundings to help your people survive, and build up your settlement.
I love the idea of exploring a beautiful alien land, drawn in the style of Moebius, and researching all the strange things you find.

Funky little Moebius inspired science fantasy portrait.
I’ve been struggling with art outside of commissions, and I was really keen on starting something with no idea what it was I was going for, going into a drawing with no preconceived notion of what it should look like when I finished it. Because of that I really enjoyed making this.
I really get like future wizard vibes from this guy, or like if a Thayan Necromancer joined the WH40K universe. The ornamental and ostentatious armor/suit that contrasts with his delicate veil. The way it completely masks any humanoid shape beyond his face. There’s bits that almost seem like an Egyptian pharaoh but turned around into something futuristic or strange. Might try to figure out the rest of this guys deal later. Hopefully I’ll have more original work to post soon ;)

So about a week ago I learn about this French artist named Moebius.
I thought his stuff had a pretty cool style so I wanted to try some of the techniques. Suddenly I'm spending a week on this Moebius inspired recreation of a poster from The Martian. (Not literally the whole week, I also started playing Arkham Knight. So more like 6ish hours every other day or so.)
Pencils and other thoughts under the fold.
Tumblr media
Some thoughts:
The contour hatching thing I tried on the mountains can look cool, but I'm not sure it really suits me.
Don't try stippling with a dip pen. It's not worth it. At least for me, where my ink tends to dry on the nib very quickly. It was a constant battle. A fineliner might be a wiser choice. Though I wanted to use the same black ink across the whole piece so, wasn't really an option here.
I think I need to clean my scanner.
I realised as I was nearing completion on this, that screentones basically exist to replace/streamline things like stippling. And now things like Photoshop replace those, too.
My hand hurts.
My light source is so inconsistent. Just imagine some spacebirds are flying nearby, casting shadows in confusing ways.
Hey if anyone knows a good way to scan paper that's become warped, like when you do watercolour, or in this case lay down a hell of a lot of ink. Like, how to get it all flat again. Let me know.

This is a spicy take but if you want to get into Moebius in 2023 do not have your expectations too high. His art was and still is remarkable (dare I say genre defining) but his comic books are, for better and for worst, comic books written by a french guy in the 70s, with plots that hold a lot of so-deep mumbo jumbo to me. I’m saying this because I’ve never seen anyone mention it online. Comics are equally about art and writing imo and his writing is just...not that good.
That being said! if you want to get into Moebius and don’t want to commit to buying expensive comics books, here’s a few links
my main blog’s Moebius tag has a few years’ worth of illustration and comic archive
great archive from blogger 70sscifiart
not about him alone but a good watch is Jodorowsky’s Dune (where he was a concept artist). the film’s website explicitly gives out their PayPal in case you wanna torrent it and tip them alongsides a list of legal ways to buy it
Arzak Rhapsody, a cartoon based on one of his comics, is up on YT with English subs
And if you DO want to commit to expensive comic books, my recs in order from most to least recommended and why would be:
The cat’s eyes (artist): A short (= cheaper lol) ink only graphic novel with striking visuals
Any short stories compilation: always the best. Including there 40days in the désert B which is just a collection of black and white illustrations and not a comic
Arzach (artist and writer): most moebiusy thing out there and mostly silent - if it’s not translated in your language should be no problem!
Edena (artist and writer): great visuals but a story that devolves into a bit of a mess later on and usually an expensive book
the Incal (artist): putting this one last, while probably the most solid plotwise it’s also a long series usually published as fancy comics which will cost you a lot
To note he has done other works under other names. Moebius was his name for scifi-fantasy things, which is mostly what he’s known for! If you are interested in his process and the guy himself, check out the Insides Moebius series where he talks about all that. Very fun books.
And if you’re interested to discover other artists from that scene, I will recommend Druillet (who is on instagram nowadays if you want to send him a message for whatever reason) and Bilal. Both of these worked alongsides Moebius and Bilal in particular was strongly inspired by his work himself, as well as inspiring others in turn - despite both these artists not being that well known internationally

What do you think of 2000AD comics?
2000AD is great, Judge Dredd is one of those comics you can just get really into at any point in your life, if you ever want a glimpse into UK comics scene it's always worth looking at, especially the Judge Death stories with Brain Bolland art.
Tumblr media
Mag-freaking-nificent.
Okay, formalities out of the way? We've said Judge Dredd is cool?
Right.
Sit the fuck down and let me tell you about my favourite 200AD comic.
Let me tell you about:
Tumblr media
NEMESIS THE WARLOCK
Tumblr media
NEMESIS THE WARLOCK!
FIGHTING THE EVIL OF THE CHIEF TERMINATOR
Tumblr media
TORQUEMADA
Look let me get into this. Most people know Kevin O'Neill because of his work on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Alan Moore. I know him most for Nemesis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nothing comes close to the absolute insanity and creativity of Nemesis the Warlock. It is some of the greatest design work ever done and speaks volumes of the environment it was created in.
Tumblr media
Every panel, every scene has new and inventive characters, environment, objects. It doesn't stop surprising you with how it portrays everything. They mess with scale a lot, having huge sculptures of people as buildings or just making people tiny on Moebius inspired planes
Tumblr media
Have a look at this shot of Nemesis at his writing desk
Tumblr media
There is so much going on there it's fantastic. Anyway. Plot? Plot. Nemesis is the leader of the revolutionary army fighting Torquemada, who wants to exterminate all alien life so that only "pure" humans exist. Sounds pretty straightforward right?
Except Nemesis is a Warlock, he only does things in the most over the top evil way to combat him. And not in a "sacrifice your troops" evil way, but in a "haunt this guy and make him think I'm the devil so he does my bidding" way
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I want a church organ with a "brimstone" intonation)
Nemesis also comes through a matriarchal society, and when they attack his family he does indeed go ballistic. I feel it's important you know what the females of his species look like.
Tumblr media
Awesome.
Any way thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about Nemesis, I highly recommend it it's an absolute blast.

The Last-Minute Sci-Fi Gift Guide
There's only one thing worse than procrastinating on getting gifts for your loved ones, and that's procrastinating on putting together a guide to help out everyone else with all those gifts. It's Dec 12, so you can decide for yourself which I'm doing.
Tumblr media
Art book: Worlds Beyond Time, $32
If you follow this blog, you might have heard of this one. I published Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s this year after five years of work on it, and I think it's really good! 400+ images, 100+ artists, with lots of fun art history and jokes.
Also, it's just $20 right now if you order through my publisher and use the code SKIPTHELINE! Cheapest it's ever been!
Tumblr media
Card game: Coup, $14
In this "social deduction" card game, you play as a government official in a future dystopia who needs to backstab their way into power. Everyone starts out with just two cards in this bluffing game, so the tide can turn pretty quick when players start assassinating each other's cards. The fast pace makes it a good gift for someone who loves spies but thinks they don't like card games.
Tumblr media
Game to play over Zoom: Bad Spaceships, $3
If a bluffing game stresses you out, try Bad Spaceships: It's a collaborative world-building game in which you roll dice to see what area of your spaceship connects to another, forcing you to spitball exactly why this is the case. As the game puts it, you might fix the hull by playing Tetris, or charge your weapons in the swimming pool. You're basically getting weird prompts to tell a story that can evolve over the course of the game.
It's such an indie game that it comes as PDFs you download from itch.io, but you can play it just as well over Zoom, if you're looking for an excuse to catch up with your old digital nomad college friend.
Tumblr media
Movies/TV: Streaming service gift card
Gift cards are all well and good, but you can personalize them by recommending a few of your favorite shows as well. I suggest:
Hulu: Cowboy Bebop
Apple TV+: Severance
Criterion Channel: Ravenous, Paprika, Strange Days
Paramount+: Yellowjackets
Amazon Prime: The Devil's Hour
But to be honest, this entry is just an excuse to talk about the new Max show Scavenger’s Reign. Inspired by the work of French artist Moebius and with a clear debt to famed 70s animated film Fantastic Planet, this stylish sci-fi show features a bunch of humans trying to survive on a beautiful but hostile alien world. Perfect for lovers of fictional nature.
Tumblr media
Vintage sci-fi
This Etsy shop has some good stuff, like the 1971 Frank Kelly Freas NASA poster above, a bit of history that I even mentioned on page 167 of my art book.
Tumblr media
Penguin science fiction postcards, $28
These postcards have a ton of very cool sci-fi covers I've blogged in the past – great value if you want a lot of art for a low cost.
Tumblr media
Meteorite pendant necklace, $34
I think we all know what kind of rock your loved ones need around their neck: A chunk of meteorite straight out of the 1576 Argentinan meteorite fall.
Tumblr media
Book recs
For astronauts: Packing for Mars by Mary Roach, The New Guys: The Historic Class of Astronauts That Broke Barriers and Changed the Face of Space Travel by Meredith Bagby
For comedians: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, Even Greater Mistakes: Short Stories by Charlie Jane Anders
For sleuths: Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty, Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson
For crafters: Knits of Tomorrow: Toys and Accessories for your Retro-Future Needs
For the resistance fighters: The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley, An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
For slasher movie fans: Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare
Tumblr media
Syd Mead "Biomorph Vehicle" button down shirt, $49
T-shirts aren't classy enough for the world's coolest visual futurist, Syd Mead. I haven't actually bought this incredibly odd shirt, but I really need to.
Tumblr media
Art prints (and more) from 70s sci-fi artists
Artist shops can be surprisingly hard to track down on the internet, but here's a short list of ones I've come across. All of these artists are featured in my book (except one), so you can read up on them before you commit to a print.
Michael Whelan
John Harris
Syd Mead
Don Maitz
David B Mattingly
Peter Andrew Jones - Jones was one of just a few artists who declined to be included in my art book, but he has a distinct, colorful style that I would have loved to have featured!
Finally, here's one extra bonus, just for everyone who made it to the end of this article: The UK-based educational charity Centre for Computing History sells three big officially licensed John Harris posters featuring these three artworks, famous for their use as covers for Sinclair programming manuals.
Tumblr media
It's a great deal that I've never seen mentioned anywhere, and Harris' work has a timeless quality that makes it great for an unassuming wall decoration. If you're outside the UK, the shipping costs will be a pain, but there's no better deal for a classic sci-fi poster.

Watched Akira for the first time today, I somehow managed to avoid spoilers for my entire existence, and all I can think of how pivotal it was as an inspiration for Nightow creating Trigun.
Tumblr media
There are so many parallels visually and thematically, but they both are unique stories.
It would seem obvious to say that the Akira manga by Katsuhiro Otomo was influenced by Blade Runner (an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) given the timeline, but that's not the case since the Blade Runner movie only came out 6 months before the manga, and if you know anything about publishing and planning a story, the manga was probably in the works long before then.
Tumblr media
Turns out, both Blade Runner and Otomo were influenced by a French comic called "The Long Tomorrow" written by Dan O'Bannon, and illustrated by Moebius.
Art inspires art and am just!!! I love seeing it.

This week's spotlight is on Beth Fuller and her comic Witching Hour. Beth is an illustrator and concept artist from Dublin, Ireland. She’s considering putting down the stylus pen and heading off into the wilderness to live as a hermit, but likes hot showers and horror films just enough to keep her in civilisation. For now, anyway. (@bethfuller | website | instagram | twitter)
"Witching Hour is about a young girl sent on a mysterious journey by her father. Two pale trees with intertwined branches form a strange gate at the edge of 12-year-old Esio’s town, and beyond it lies an old, ruined land. Over their pints, as dusk falls, the villagers say it’s where lost things - and people - eventually end up. She’s got sandwiches, an apple, plasters, a bottle of Tipperary Kidz water and a Horrible Histories book in her rucksack and she’s heading off into the unknown, with only a talisman to guide her. There’s no telling who she might meet along the way."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read the spotlight below the cut!
"That’s the initial rundown, anyway. Speaking more subjectively, I wanted to create a setting where two totally different characters - as different from each other as you can get - are forced to work together and end up changing each other’s lives. I really do think you can get on and find common ground with almost anyone, in the right circumstances."
Witching Hour took several years to incubate. "I’d been working on a comic slowly and haltingly since I was 18. There are pages kept deep, deep in my computer with old, badly drawn versions of Esio in a radically different setting, but it never really made sense as a story. I don’t think I made it past page three! Still, the fantasy atmosphere and character of Esio stuck with me over the years. Plus I really like to mix the dull, routine and mundane aspects of everyday life with things that are otherworldly and strange."
Tumblr media
"Eventually we had a visual narrative module as part of my degree, and while recalling my old comic pages (I was mulling over it in the shower, which is where I think many of us do our most important thinking) an idea came to me that would form the basis of Witching Hour. Adding this to the embers of my previous project gave me more than enough fuel to sit down and start drawing.
"I have plenty of ideas for what I want to get up to next. I’ll work on a tarot set, keep working on freelance concept art and illustrations, design some tattoos, maybe try my hand at another comic at some stage. As always, feel free to get in touch and let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see from me!"
Tumblr media
Beth draws inspiration from many sources: "The landscapes of south-west Ireland. Horror films, foreign language films, fantasy films, anything animated. The writing of Michelle Paver, Neil Gaiman and Ursula LeGuin.
"For me, though, it’s primarily the work of other illustrators that has inspired me the most, and it’s often only through seeing and evaluating lots of different brilliant styles that you can start to discern your own tastes. As a child, the obligatory Ghibli film catalogue. Then the work of Chris Riddell, Max Prentis and Ian McQue were enough inspiration to foster an interest in art school. I went, studied Illustration at DJCAD, and discovered Jake Wyatt, Celia Lowenthal, Juliette Brocal, Linnea Sterte, Jack T. Cole, Evan Cagle, Alphonse Mucha and (of course) Moebius. Seeing their work is like taking the creative spark and making it into a deodorant flamethrower."
Tumblr media
Beth's work often centres around fantastical worlds and sweeping landscapes. "I think somehow you always come back to what you know. Sometimes you don’t even notice you have a fascination with something until you start to create and it keeps returning.
"My family and I spent a lot of time around Irish coastlines growing up, especially during the warmer months. Kerry, in the south-west, has mountains that turn brown in winter, then when summer comes are carpeted with a haze of purple heather, not unlike the hills of Scotland. There are crumbling ringforts and monastic ruins on isolated hilltops. I could be in the most beautiful place in the world but still miss the coconut scent of Kerry gorse. The fantasy aspect is fun to play with, and it adds a nice sense of mystery, but fundamentally I think the landscapes I draw are an attempt to capture, and return to, the shores I kicked about on as a kid."
Tumblr media
For aspiring comic creators, Beth has this advice: "This is a common one, but I think it’s still worth saying: if you have a story, get it down. You don’t need to consider yourself a comic artist to make a comic. You also don’t need to wait around for the right time, or enough expertise - nobody is going to give you a nametag with ‘comic artist’ on it. If you can draw, and you need to say something, just start drawing boxes and see where it goes. Also, ‘Necropolis’ by Jake Wyatt is really good."
You can pick up Witching Hour, alongside the other three comics in our 2023 collection, right here on Kickstarter!
