I made a better comic about art engagement.

So about a week ago I learn about this French artist named Moebius.
I thought his stuff had a pretty cool style so I wanted to try some of the techniques. Suddenly I'm spending a week on this Moebius inspired recreation of a poster from The Martian. (Not literally the whole week, I also started playing Arkham Knight. So more like 6ish hours every other day or so.)
Pencils and other thoughts under the fold.
Some thoughts:
The contour hatching thing I tried on the mountains can look cool, but I'm not sure it really suits me.
Don't try stippling with a dip pen. It's not worth it. At least for me, where my ink tends to dry on the nib very quickly. It was a constant battle. A fineliner might be a wiser choice. Though I wanted to use the same black ink across the whole piece so, wasn't really an option here.
I think I need to clean my scanner.
I realised as I was nearing completion on this, that screentones basically exist to replace/streamline things like stippling. And now things like Photoshop replace those, too.
My hand hurts.
My light source is so inconsistent. Just imagine some spacebirds are flying nearby, casting shadows in confusing ways.
Hey if anyone knows a good way to scan paper that's become warped, like when you do watercolour, or in this case lay down a hell of a lot of ink. Like, how to get it all flat again. Let me know.

Just by the by, I'm currently live, been inking a thing for like four hours, if anyone wants to witness my brain slowly melt.
Current progress:
Putting this here partly to hype myself up to actually do it. I want to try streaming some art. Social things are scary and I basically run on external validation right now, so if there's any potential interest here, that'd be neat to know about.
If not, well, I'll be drawing either way.

I liked this.
There's always gonna be some jackass with a nicer hat than you, telling you that your goals are impossible and you shouldn't even bother trying.
But it's only impossible if you stop. You'll get there if you keep moving.
And then you can casually step past their corpse.
(this story will continue tomorrow.)

First page has been pencilled.
A storyboard exists so I have an actual plan, but working out how I want my panel layouts has been a process.
I know I could just draw everything full size and then lay it all out in photoshop, but. I already know how to use photoshop. I want to learn and do it as traditionally as possible.
(Though photoshop will probably be involved for some cleanup after everything's scanned. And maybe screen tones, those are expensive.)
All that to say, even if I can't finish drawing all this for whatever reason, I'll still ink whatever I have drawn. I enjoy inking.
Those of you who've enjoyed my TF2 comics in the past, I'm currently working on a new one.
Because Valve won't.
Jokes aside, this one will be hand drawn, so there's a non zero chance I get tired and bail on it, but at least if I mention it here there can be some form of accountability.

Fat Pikachu supremacy.
Basically did this so I could test how various things behaved with each other. Hence the design itself being all over the place.
I have learned:
Watercolour is not ideal on this paper.
That waterproof ink isn't actually waterproof until about 24 hours later.
I need to wash and wipe my pen basically before every re-dip or I'm gonna have issues.
I cannot draw circles.
Masking tape will tear my paper.
I don't like watercolour pencils.

What if Arthur took place in the same kind of world as Beastars?
It feels cursed, and maybe it is, but why should I be the only person with this in their brain? This has been haunting me. Every time I try to think of the song Monster, my brain alters it so Yoasobi is singing "Every day when you're walkin' down the street..."
Pencils under the fold if you're into that stuff.

Midnight. In her trench coat days.
In which I find a new dislike for correction fluid. I think I'm getting better at human proportions though. Still broken, but. Better.

Fellas, this took me three days. And after all that, I think I like the pencils more.
Some musings under the fold.
Still getting used to the dip pen. I've seen people get hella thin lines while moving as smoothly as a pencil, so I need to work out what I'm doing differently.
Also damn, I need some grey ink. And to get better at cross hatching.
Tools aside, it looks like I need to do more work on heads/faces. Seems the hair can make a huge difference to the shape. I also need to get better at hair, damn. Just humans in general I guess.
But the advent of the lightbox means I still have the original sketch, so I could totally try inking this again in like a year to see if my skills have improved in that regard. Or just totally redraw it.

My body proportions are all over the place. But I think I'm getting somewhere with hands.
