I think one of the things that gives New Gods so much potential is that they were specifically designed to be gods of a modern era. Like, very intentionally. This is a new generation, fresh, not the ancient fables of Thor and his kind.
Ive talked at length about how Metron is a stand out in this area, so I'll spare everyone the ted talk. But its really so fascinating how he surrounds us more and more each day. The use of AI is a fantastic example. I dont think theres anything more apropos right now. The potential to do good is so incredibly valuable, but of course people take advantage and use it for unscrupulous means. But can you blame the technology itself? Should you? That is Metron. And like it or not, it's here to stay.
But what about the others? What do they embody form our current modern lives? I think thats a harder question but its really entertaining to think about.
Darkseid is fairly easy to clock. As Jack Kirby said he's every bully. And to me thats something that is timeless. But its how he goes about it. One of the things about Apokolips is its technology and how it's used. Like DeSaad always hooking people up to bizarre and torturous machines. Darkseid and his ilk are the kind to use weapons of war. They are the kind to commit atrocities and war crimes. And they are the kind to do it all in the name of Darkseid. Live for Darkseid, kill for Darkseid. And those are also timeless concepts, so much so that they're happening in big ways even today.
The Forever People are also a clear symbol of youth growing up in the wake of world wars, wanting peace but knowing they must stand up for ideals even when it becomes too much for them. They were written so clearly as hippies back in the 70s, but that movement never went away, and maybe we dont call them flower children now, but young people are still out there speaking up about whats going on in the world. They still protest and fight for their causes. They still call for peace.
I think the others are so much more challenging to pin down. Who are Scott and Barda and Lightray and Orion today? What do they represent that the old gods did not? I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on it.

Superfam sexuality headcanons (I need to stop procrastinating):
Clark: Token straight of both the league but also his own family. Does support them all though + has intense bi wife energy
Lois: Bisexual. Had a crush on both catwoman and wonder woman for the longest time before getting together with Clark. Would have still 100% suggested a threesome with Diana if she knew it wouldn't make Clark uncomfortable.
Jon: Bisexual. That's just canon.
Kon: Bisexual. Thats not canon but should be.
Kara: Lesbian, although it took her a while to realize that she wasn't into men.
Natasha: Lesbian (canon), would have also been poly is DC editorial wasn't a bunch of cowards.
John Henry: Another straight man because Clark was lonely but I can also see him and Lana being bi4bi.
Lana Lang: bi as well. She used to have a crush on Lois still does.
Jimmy Olsen: He has had canon girlfriends but I still view him as gay and ace.
Bonus Lex Luthor: extremely closeted gay man, yet it's still somehow obvious to everybody else, except Clark.
Bonus bonus the new gods: I refuse to believe that the notion of sexuality exists in the fourth world but Barda and Scott are bi4bi, Orion is also bi, Lightray is gay, Metron is aroace. Also Grail is bi, leaving Kalibak the sole token straight in his family (Steppenwolf was canonically gay in the Harley Quinn show and as for Darkseid... I also refuse to believe that a straight man (entiry?) would try to conquer the universe in a mini skirt and thigh high boots)

"That Really Happened?!" DC Comics Tournament Entry #43
Metron and Swamp Thing go for a ride
Tumblr media
[ID: Metron sits on Swamp Thing, who is shaped like a chair. They both cry out in anguish. Swamp Thing says, "Mother Box says... What you are asking for... Is Impossi-" and he cuts himself off by screaming. Metron yells, "Fool! We either attain the Source among the living... or among the dead!" /End]
What Happened?
In what is probably my favorite comic of all time because of how weird it is, Swamp Thing encounters Metron stranded on a desolate planet. The Mobius Chair is broke as a joke, so Swamp Thing does the only logical thing at that point, which is shape himself into a chair, and offer to take Metron where he wants to go (he's green, the chair's green, it's a match made in heaven). And Metron, in his infinite wisdom is like HECK YEAH LET'S GOOOO and instead of like idk making their way to civilization or safety, they try to go into the Source (ah Metron and his one track mind). Anyway, the whole thing is a wash because they didn't actually go into the Source, they got confooled by an Aleph. And then next Swamp Thing issue, none of it is spoken about again. I guess what happened out in space is just between him and Metron (and Darkseid). The End.

We're in the final week of New Gods November!
To go along with the "New Gods" prompt, I've made a uquiz. This is the first one I've ever done, so hopefully it's fun :3
