Sadly things are mainly designed for fully functional adults in their Prime. And cars. At least my findings when I have worked in construction most decades of my adult life.

And there are gaps people do not seem to grasp. Removing treshholds for people who have mobility issues is not that easy as it is usually here integral part of the doorframe. And designers do not ask enough people with issues, My co-worker/buddy tells to other people when we were building a multi-use facility. The bosses wanted us to affix the signs to bathrooms. The signs were supposed to be at about 2,3 meters ( 8 feet I guess?) and had painted on symbols of genders and the text in Finnish Swedish. And braille. I thought it was a joke of some kind and without thinking blurted " so it is painted braille for Giant but sensitive blind people? Didn't see that one" and even as my friend collapsed laughing I had no idea I had made a pun.

Watched a great talk today about web/technology accessibility, and the speaker pointed out that yes, accessibility is important for people with permanent disabilities, and we should definitely care about that. But also accessibility helps EVERYBODY, because everybody will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in situations that accessible technology can help with. Here are permanent, temporary, and situational disabilities that accessible technology can help with:

Remember that whether something is disabling or not depends on the situation, the environment, the technology, etc. We’re ALL disabled at some point. It is important to support permanently disabled people, but it is also important to remember that accessibility helps us all!
