I just noticed I didn't tell you yet--which is shameful as it is Tumblr where the Mermaid Scientist was born! My Mermaid Book was picked up by Eye of Newt and is available for pre-order right now (it's coming out very soon, though, so any orders should make it until Christmas if that's a concern of yours)! If you're in North America, I'd suggest ordering directly through my publisher's website, however it's available anywhere you'd usually order books. You can ask your favourite indie book shop to order it for you or--if there's no other option or you're worried about crazy shipping costs where you live--it's available via the place starting with A, which shall otherwise not be named, as well. Please note: This is an edited version of the original book. It's shorter, but with more coherent world building and a beautiful new layout and design. It's a proper field guide now!

In Need of Book Cover Help
Hi!
Tumblr media
I'm an indie author who designs their own book covers, and I need help. I'm not a graphic artist, but I need someone to tell me how to get better. So I'm turning to the people who have the most opinions: the internet.
Tumblr media
Please help me! I don't know what I'm doing and can't be trusted with these choices.

Emily Windsnap Shipping Post
So this fandom is small as hell and I was thinking there's absolutely no official ship names for any Emily Windsnap characters.
My solution to this very important problem; Make some up! I got together pretty much all the valid ships I could think of and came up with some ideas for ship names!
I used Winx club fandom rules and, instead of being traditional and meshing together the character's names, I meshed together things that represent those characters! this is gonna be a big post so we'll start with the canon ships
Feel free to vote!
This will continue into more posts bc apparently tumblr doesn't let me do multiple polls in one post

Where you a beanie baby kid or did you collect some other type of stuffed animal?
Beanie Babies were my favorite growing up! My elementary school bestie had the best collection I'd ever seen with a lot of the classics. My collection has some cool ones, but they're mostly backed away from the first time I moved. I would save my money and my mom would take me to one of the toy stores in town that had the best selection. Man, I miss those days.
Today is the last day of the "You Belong Here" April photo challenge. How stunning is this metal bookmark inspired by Siren Queen by Nghi Vo? Designed by @litpinsandco, one of my favorite pin designers!

Book Blurb:
A way to survive. A way to serve. A way to save. Simi prayed to the gods, once. Now she serves them as Mami Wata--a mermaid--collecting the souls of those who die at sea and blessing their journeys back home. But when a living boy is thrown overboard, Simi does the unthinkable--she saves his life, going against an ancient decree. And punishment awaits those who dare to defy it. To protect the other Mami Wata, Simi must journey to the Supreme Creator to make amends. But all is not as it seems. There's the boy she rescued, who knows more than he should. And something is shadowing Simi, something that would rather see her fail. . . . Danger lurks at every turn, and as Simi draws closer, she must brave vengeful gods, treacherous lands, and legendary creatures. Because if she doesn't, then she risks not only the fate of all Mami Wata, but also the world as she knows it.
Review:
Deadly mermaids who collect the souls of those who have died at sea and tasked with blessing their journeys back home, a boy who was suppose to have died, gods, betrayals, and monsters. Simi was a girl who died but has now been turned into a Mami Wata, a mermaid who collects souls of those who have died at sea and must bless them on their journey. Despite being given a new life, she still gets flashes of her old one and she holds onto them... making her yearn to be human once again. When she finds a boy who is thrown overboard she saves him rather than let his fate be decided by the sea... and by saving him she has broken a sacred rule. By saving his life she has now endangered all the other mermaids of her kind and in order to fix it she must beg forgiveness from the Supreme God and in order to summon him she must find the mystical rings... but first she must deal with the boy she saved. Simi has saved Kola, a boy who was taken and desperately needs to get back home to his family to make sure they are safe. In exchange for getting him back home he will help give Simi the ring’s she is looking for. Yet things are never as easy as they seem as they face many different complications on their journey, from vicious monsters, to the trickster God who has grown greedy and seeks the rings for himself to become as powerful the strongest god, and not to mention the growing feelings between them which is forbidden. This definitely gave me Little Mermaid but make it deadlier and filled with more myth, and I really enjoyed it.

Of Poseidon (2012) - Anna Banks
Rating: 4 / 5
(No spoiler review)
Okay look, you got me. Two mermaid themed series back to back with high ratings. In my defense, I read this one first and a little bit ago, at that. I’m just trying to catch up in my reviews, please do not roast me for all I am worth. Let’s talk about it.
Of Poseidon gave me the same feeling that reading Twilight produced, but submerged in water and with an almost instant slap to the face of trauma. Personally I adore a little bit of dredged up sentimentality from a new book, it tends to make you forget how much adult life sucks. That wasn’t the reason this novel had me hooked, though. Contribute my dedication directly to that trauma I mentioned earlier, because it was a real attention grabber that pulled me right under the waves of interest. Get it? It’s a pun. You know what? I think I’m funny and that’s all that matters.
Like most books in my collection, this is a young adult romance novel, but would you believe that isn’t why I picked it up? The terms “talks to fish” and “saving kingdom” were what really sold me on the matter and they didn’t disappoint. Dueling kingdoms has always been a weak spot of mine, and finding a series where they split ‘species’ of mermaids between two different houses (Poseidon and Triton) based on genetic gifts was all I didn’t know I needed. However, I will be the first to admit that Galen was a good selling point once you met him. This was a lore rich environment with a well mapped out backstory for a society that is and FELT ancient (in a good way)  which I didn’t find repetitive or oddly forced at all.
You might notice by now that I never really comment on the romance part of whatever I review, and that is by design. One thing that DOES often come across as repetitive is the way relationships bloom in the supernatural romance genre. For those of us who have been knee deep in these trenches since middle school we know what we’re getting, and I don’t think spelling out the pattern is worth it when the content around the romance is what makes or breaks the whole story. That being said, this couple’s blooming romance was exactly the same as every other one so take that as you will.

And so, in the luminous realm beneath the sea, mermaids swam through the ages, the guardians of ocean mysteries and custodians of the stories whispered by the waves. With each graceful movement of their iridescent tail, they embodied the poetry of the depths—breathtaking goddesses whose existence transcended time, entwined with the ebb and flow of the eternal tides.Yearn for the realm beyond the human world with the new Android and iPhone Mermaid Aesthetic App Icons Pack.

A guy doing marine research into phytoplankton is far out to sea and waiting for the samples to be ready when he spots a fast-moving ripple in the water up ahead.
Fully aware that this spot is home to a migratory orca pod, he assumes he's stumbled across an orca hunting a seal and settles against the railing to watch, because it's not every day you get to see that.
The ripples get closer, the shadows in the water more defined, the water choppier, and suddenly the orca and its unfortunate prey are zooming directly towards the boat and he's waiting, breath held, for them to duck right underneath--
When the water breaks, the ocean sprays, and he's suddenly smacked fully in the face by a very wet, very confused, and very pretty merman, throwing them both down onto the deck while the boat rocks as a confused and now quite hungry orca dives beneath it.
The merman, it turns out, thought that the boat was an ice float and didn't realise his mistake until it was too late. But he's very thankful for the impromptu rescue, and wow don't you have nice arms, and holy shit you've got legs, can I touch them? Is that weird? Can I touch them anyway? And your hair--
So of course they get to talking because they're both utterly fascinated with the other, and soon the sun has set and the samples are long-since ready and the moonlight is making the ocean look black and they part with the knowledge that they'll never meet again, and a kiss, and a lingering look over the shoulder for all the things that can't be...
And the researcher gets back to land, moors his boat, readies his samples. He packs up his things, shoves them into his bags, and prepares to go home. He steps onto the jetty boards and thinks of the merman and the solid wood beneath his feet seems to sway for more than one reason.
There's a splash. He turns, pulled as if by the tide, and there's a ripple in the water. A face. A pair of eyes made black by the moonlight.
And this is how the researcher acquires a merman boyfriend who helps him find samples and the merman acquires a human boyfriend who rescues him from whales.

Petition to add more disabled magical creatures in fantasy
Like picture a mermaid. When they have to be on land their tail turns to legs, but because their body is used to lower gravity their joints tire easily and are chronically in pain.
Also depending on how deep in the ocean they live, it’s likely they have circulation problems because their body is used to the water pressure holding everything where it needs to be and now their blood is always fucking pooling in their legs and they have to wear compression socks everywhere.
Wheelchair user mermaids. Partially/fully blind mermaids because who needs to see when there’s no light at the bottom of the ocean?
Mermaids with sensory issues who have to wear headphones all the time because sound is so much louder up here on land and they are constantly overstimulated. And also the sun is simply Too Bright™.
Mermaids who have POTS because in the water postural changes make no difference and their bodies don’t know how to stabilize with so much gravity.
I’m really fixated on the mermaids rn but PLEASE feel more than welcome to add more!!!! I wanna hear about disabled dragons

Wyll reciting fairy tales he knows by heart to the children in Reithwin, and making up new endings each time they revisit to see if they catch him and were paying attention.
Wyll entertaining the tiefling kiddos with big, showy tales of castles and monsters and dragons and knights, all with nameless heros so the children can put themselves in the adventure.
Wyll having whole stanzas of poetry memorized that he can recite at any time, and often does under breath as he walks or swings his rapier in rhythm to keep time (he doesn't count his waltz, he *speaks* it)
Wyll dropping his favourite quotes from plays in casual conversation (and making some up completely on the spot, but they're so dead on you wouldn't be able to tell).
Wyll who could have been a poet, a playwright, a storyteller. Who *is* all of these things, even if it's not at the forefront of his being.
