268th edit and inspired by @airasora redesign for Jasmine for her Mx character. I had fun making Kida’s alleged character’s notes ( @little-bloodied-angel and I are unsure if accurate or someone wrote it up as some traits do not add up) and I hope you all like this redesign. Yes, Melanesian people can have naturally blonde hair. Shout out to @little-bloodied-angel for introducing me the animated movie Kirikou and the Sorceress (which I was able to watch for free on Amazon). Shoutout to @thenamelessdoll for her post too that inspired me.

Sometimes, Chris Hayes' podcast goes off on these weird tangents, and the most recent episode is one of them, quite explicitly. It's about the history of Polynesia, which is always a fascinating subject--the Polynesian expansion, and really the whole history of the Austronesian-speaking peoples, seems like one of those feats with rare equal in human history. It's one thing to roam over the vast steppes of Asia--it's quite another to take a canoe, stick some outriggers on it so it doesn't tip over, and start faring the open ocean.
One point his guest makes that I found interesting is that for the most part the atolls and little islands of the Pacific are a very harsh environment. Big volcanic archipelagoes like Hawaii and Aotearoa/New Zealand are rare. Atolls and other reef islands especially are functionally big limestone slabs, often without any source of fresh water, with no large mammals, and with few native plants you can eat. The weather is nice, sure (when there isn't a typhoon--and I can't help but think a typhoon on a little island must be terrifying indeed), but these are not inherently resource-rich places. That the Polynesian (and Micronesian and Melanesian!) peoples not only could travel those distances, but make permanent habitation on the islands they came across, is kind of crazy! You have to be really prepared, with a package of supplies and technologies that set you up for success. Long-distance trade is possible, but you're not gonna be running any kind of substantial import economy across hundreds or thousands of miles of ocean via catamarans.
The comparison that springs to mind to me isn't a historical one like the European age of exploration, which was overwhelmingly to places already peopled and productive, but to science fiction scenarios of space exploration. You'd have to have a little bit of the wild-eyed zealot to be the sort of person who ignores the cries of "there is no possible useful return on this investment" to settle most of these places. But they did! And they thrived for centuries!

I should probably finish that book on melanesian religion but like...the big points that you get from the early stuff make the later stuff less interesting
"Cargo cults" in the sense of religious movemenrs that mimic western technology (and use the term cargo) significantly predate ww2 (like, by 50 years)
Melanesian society was like destroyed by western powers using them for borderline (and sometimes literally) slave labor
The male populace was like all in distant plantations and then came back to the villages with broken bodies
White people were mysteriously very rich, this wealth came on cargo ships and source was vague
Revolutionary religious millenarian movements kept popping up the whole time
Preexisting millenarian movements had a thing about the ancestors coming back om boats
These combined to end up with the ancestors coming back and making you as rich as the white people
The magic got "white people stuff" flavored for pretty obvious class/power reasons
As far as I can tell, the idea that cargo cults originated from the plenty received during ww2 is basically straight up American propaganda about how great and generous we are
Uhhh. Yeah
So anyway this makes cargo cults much less sexy. Its just normal magic and millenarianism mixed with western stuff for coincidental reasons about the preexisting religion. Also magic that mimics technology has existed since forever

i do appreciate when people make a point of using more neutral and less appropriative terms in fantasy media. like constructs instead of golems and magic points instead of mana. i feel like most people don't know mana is a Polynesian and Melanesian concept and not just a fantasy rpg thing.

"TMA/tme is just like any other axis of oppression, like black/white or abled/disabled!!" Except it's not. We say black and non-black, not antiblackness-affected and antiblackness-excempt, because we understand that there are non-black people, such as South Asians and Melanesians and other POC who can be affected by antiblackness. We don't say ableism-affected and ableism-exempt because we understand that oppression is dynamic and abled people can still face ableism, especially if they become temporarily disabled. We don't say homophobia-affected and homophobia-exempt because we understand that non-gay people can face homophobia, and no, it's not misdirected homophobia, it's homophobia. If a straight boy gets beat up in an alley for wearing lipstick, it's homophobia, plain and simple, not "misdirected homophobia". Should said straight boy be a spokesperson on homophobia? Probably not, but he was still still a victim of homophobia. No one is saying trans women should be deplatformed from talking about transmisogyny, and yes, trans women face the majority of it, but that doesn't mean that GNC cis men, women of colour, men of colour, and trans men are exempt from transmisogyny. Nobody is exempt from facing bigotry.

obsessed with the reply where you just make stuff up about cannibals. assume you do that often.
So, there are multiple tribes, one is the Etoro, another I know of is the Sambia tribe;
Cannibalism in Oceania is well documented for many parts of this region, with reports ranging from the early modern period to, in a few cases, the 21th century.
Archaeological evidence has also been found.
Human cannibalism in Melanesia and Polynesia was primarily associated with war, with victors eating the vanquished, while in Australia it was often a contingency for hardship to avoid starvation.
Cannibalism used to be widespread in parts of Fiji, once called the "Cannibal Isles" among the Māori people of New Zealand, and in the Marquesas Islands.
It was also practiced in New Guinea and in parts of the Solomon Islands, and human flesh was sold at markets in some Melanesian islands.
Cannibalism was practised in Papua New Guinea as of 2012, for cultural reasons, and for dietary reasons the last reported case of Cannibalism was in 1964.
Kuru is a neurodegenerative disease found only on Papua New Guinea, and was restricted to natives of the Foré linguistic group in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands and neighboring linguistic groups, the Auiana, Awa, Usurufa, Kanite, Keiagana, Iate, Kamano, and Gimi.
Kuru was caused both by their ritualistic endocannibalism, and their cannibalism of other tribes, it's a prion disease, caused by consuming the flesh of other humans, like mad cow and chronic wasting disease.
This disease was stopped because the ritual endocannibalism was outlawed, it was outlawed because the practice is barbaric, crude, repulsive, backward and primitive, and spread disease.
Oh yes, can't forget, Kuru isn't gone, it's hyperendemic to the populations of the Foré linguistic group, and can take anywhere from 14 to 40 years to show symptoms.
So yeah, we don't defend cannibals here.

So you already discussed your hc for Luffy's ethnicity but what about the rest of the crew?
great question, i’ve been pondering about this for a while, it’s just when i saw luffy, i just knew he was my pasifika cousin 😭 i have reference sheets w all their hcs i’m working on to post later but let me go ahead n lay out rq how i would imagine the strawhats! i try to be as canon compliant as possible when assigning them.
usopp - afro-caribbean, specifically jamaican 🇯🇲
luffy - indigenous on both sides. so afro native samoan-brazilian. i stand by that forever. polynesian luffy real 🇼🇸🇧🇷. malagasy too. historically malagasy people are austronesian relatives as well anyway (malayo-polynesian) 🇲🇬
nami - thai-swedish. she’s ethnically fully thai, but when bellmere found her and nojiko, she took them to her hometown in sweden to be raised. im a firm believer in southeast asian nami 🇹🇭🇸🇪
zoro - afro japanese-caribbean. been a blasian zoro truther since day one. so japanese and haitian 🇯🇵🇭🇹
robin - double native as well !! native costa rican, the bribri people, and indigenous to eastern russia, yupik. she’s a challenge to figure out but i just know this is a native woman. 🇨🇷🇷🇺
jimbei - melanesian cousin fijian-indian !!! 🇫🇯🇮🇳
franky - italian american. only fueled by how water 7 is allegedly based on venice 🇮🇹🇺🇸 but also consider panamanian franky …🇵🇦 exactly. so he’s either panamanian or italian american to me
brook - afro-austrian ethiopian. an ethnically east african black man from austria(i also get new orleanian from him IF he were american)🇪🇹🇦🇹
chopper - if he were a human, indigenous canadian first nation (inuk) absolutely 🇨🇦
vivi - nubian and sudanese vivi on top !!! 🇪🇬 🇸🇩
sanji - french ……… 🇫🇷
i have headcanons for ace, sabo, dadan and some other characters too but this post is getting really long. to be continued !

Here is a statement from the ULMWP President regarding Indonesia’s genocide of indigenous people in West Papua, dated December 2023.
https://www.instagram.com/p/C1O0YZXIrip/?igsh=b2ZlMXQ2M3V2aXR3
The Indonesian occupiers displaced more than 80,000 West Papuans in the finals months of 2023, leaving them without shelter, food, or medical care. Indonesian paramilitary units, including some that utilize Israeli-made weapons, are being deployed in West Papua.
Last month, Indonesian soldiers opened fire on a group of West Papuan women and children, and burned dozens of villages to the ground.
instagram
"To all the West Papuans, whether women or children living in the refugee camps, students in the cities, or elders in the bush -our home guards, who suffered for years and kept the flame alive by raising the Morning Star during the darkest days of our movement -you are not alone. The world is hearing your cry. This year, the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) leaders issues their own communities calling for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to be allowed into West Papua, adding their voices to the existing calls of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). Thank you to all Melanesian leaders for your consistent support. Indonesia cannot hide their shameful secret anymore[...]"
Free West Papua.

Note
Sadly Indonesia is guilty of occupying indigenous lands as well. They have displaced 100,000 (and murdered 500,000) Melanesian indigenous people in West Papua, over 55 years of occupation. Palestine and West Papua deserve freedom.

As an Australian the Huana are always the obvious choice for me in Deadfire. Given that I come from a settler colony in an Archipelago that was brutally subjugated by Imperialism, strip-mined of resources, and whose various native people and cultures were shattered (in many cases beyond repair). It's so unbelievably erroneous to think Aboriginals on the mainland and the Polynesian and Melanesian on the Islands were less sophisticated in their sociopolitical understanding of eachother and the world around them.
An example being how the various different cultures within Australia, Polynesia and Melanesia, and South East Asia had the most complex maritime trading system in the world before it was thoroughly destroyed by the ignorance, arrogance, greed, and xenophobia of Western Imperialism. But, really, understanding that there are more ways than pastiche-Roman to exist well as a society should go without saying by now. So too should it be understood that you don't have to display sociopolitical complexity to have a right to freedom and sovereignty.
It's interesting, though, how many people choose the VTC. I understand the attraction given its unregulated philosophy on animancy— which is vital to uncovering how to move forward without the Gods messing with everyone in Eora any more than they already do (imagine if Gods and their drama were real and they were actively meddlesome, how much of a nightmare that would be). However, it is also an extremely American choice to make because the VTC is private enterprise and unregulated industry. It's baby Capitalism. I can't help but look over at the US and the philosophy of The Outer Worlds and think about how choosing the VTC isn't going to end as ideally as hoped.
I'm sure choosing the Huana won't for me either— especially if the caste system and isolationist tendencies get worse over time— but I stand by it because the caste system isn't any more extreme than how other factions subjugate people. Nor are the Huana wrong to be weary of outsiders considering the state you find The Deadfire Archipelago.
Mostly I wish there was a Pillars 3. 😔
