In honor of the upcoming summer Olympics, we here at Special Collections and Archives thought it would be fun to take a look back at previous Olympics through the miniature book Olympic Stamps! This book contains Olympic stamps dating all the way back to the 1800s.

Spanning many countries, including Finland, Mexico, and of course Greece. These stamps perfectly encapsulate their hosted summer or winter Olympics.

ELVIS' RESPECT FOR GOD

On one occasion in Elvis' suite, J.D. and The Stamps were gathered around the piano, singing "Sweet, Sweet Spirit", while the other visitors were noisily chattering away. Elvis became irritated, jumped up on a stool, waved his arms and hollered at everyone, "Shut up, goddamnit! They're singing about Jesus!" A hush fell over the room, and all you could hear was the sound of the lilting spiritual. "Y'all should be quiet," he whispered. "They're singing about Jesus … come on." Everyone was looking up sheepishly at Elvis, like he was Moses standing on Mt. Sinai. His choice of words struck me as incongruously hilarious, but I did realize that in his own way he was expressing his reverence for the Lord, and I admired him for this. i thrifted a copy of walden by henry david thoreau, and when i opened it up, it had the original receipt from february 28, 1958! the book was 65 cents. the receipt has been in there so long that it discolored the pages. there are notes throughout the book in pencil. it’s so cool to accidentally stumble across a piece of everyday history.

#just opened a copy of decline and fall by evelyn waugh that i got at a secondhand place over christmas #and inside is a note in black ink that says #''merry reading mom -shaun '92'' #like i hope she enjoyed it #i hope it's what she wanted for christmas #i wonder if shauns still around #i wonder if his mom is #best writing i ever found in a book was in the back of one #where some kid wrote his name 3 times in different coloured metallic sharpie #like you just know that kid had to read the book for school and opened a fresh pack of sharpies #and wanted to see what they looked like and didn't give a shit about the book lol #wish i could remember which book it was #i have books from my great grandmother's collection #she had a stamp with her name that she put in every one #i wonder if someone will pick these books up at a secondhand store after i'm gone #and wonder who harley was #ooh i forgot i also have that copy of dr jekyll my dad stole from his high school library #that has his name written in it in pencil along with the names of like 3 other students with the year written next to each one #and on the opposite page the name of the high school that gave it to his high school #it's my favourite kind of history sorry i'm getting really into this

Print making workshop

This week I’m attending the relief print workshop.

We started off by brainstorming possible stamp ideas

I ended up making 2 stamps, two sets of paw prints one smaller than the other.

This represents my two pet cats, ponyo and loona. Ponyo is 10 years old and Loona is only 6 months old. Hence the size difference in the paw prints.

The stamps I made

I tested the stamps out on my sketch book, and planned out the image I wanted to create.

Some paw prints left by my cats after it rained outside, which was a huge inspiration for this print
