I love shopping at niche online merch shops that really shouldn't exist, like the Heinz 57 Apparel Store and the Whataburger Gift Shop. One of my favorites is the USPS "gifts" section of the website, because it's mostly very elegant prints of commemorative stamps, and then once in a while just tosses some wild-ass shit out there.
Like Farley.
Tumblr media
Farley is an anthropomorphic postbox. He's extremely shaped.
I thought maybe he was some kind of new mascot but as far as I can tell he's just a stuffed postbox retailing for $15. He appears to be named for James Aloysius Farley, postmaster general from 1933-40, but I do not know why. Ah, sweet mysteries of life.
[ID: A screengrab from the USPS website of a stuffed toy; it is shaped like a USPS mail receptacle, a tall blue bin with four legs. The toy has a US Mail stamp on the side and a beaming face where the mail slot would normally be.]

SUPPORT USPS
Some of you may have heard this already, but rural carriers in the USPS just got fucked over. (note: i myself am not a usps employee, but my partner is)
USPS and the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association (NRLCA) have disagreed on how to price the volume of work for the rural routes. City (walking) routes get paid hourly, but rural routes get paid salaried. After disagreeing, the matter went to arbitration and the arbitor chose a complicated algorithm for determining the pay by volume, and it goes into effect this week. People are losing thousands of $ a year. Most between 5%-30% of their wage just.. gone. My partner only lost $4000 off their wage, but someone he works with lost $10,000 off their yearly income. A person on reddit is saying they lost $18,000.
The USPS always gets the short end of the stick, but this is going to throw things into chaos. USPS workers are unable to strike, so they don't have much ability to fight back. (though some have been talking about illegal strikes...) They can file a grievance within their union, but it's a gamble on if it will work.
How you can help: please make a fuss about this. Contact your local reps. Share this on social media. Tell your friends.
Thank you. ❤️❤️

Friendly reminder that the USPS is a public service - it does not need to break even or make a profit like corporations. Fuck Louis DeJoy.

Every time I think about the United States Postal Service handling 44% of the world's mail without any tax or other government-funding dollars supporting it.
How it is written into the Constitution.
How there is a Smithsonian museum.
It is far from perfect -- and I'll be damned before I claim anything is sacred from improvement or criticism --
-- and it's one fine institution, I tell you what.

For pocket change you can get a piece of paper and write from and have delivered to anyone in this country. And for a bit more than pocket change, and not much at that, most places in the world.

What happened to your original book collection? Congrats on getting new books for your new library!
A couple folks have asked so I'm answering publicly. A couple years back, when I moved to CO to work as a lecturer at Western U, I shipped all my books (over 1000) via Media Mail with USPS.
They lost over half of my books in transit, and many of the books that did arrive were damaged. My library went from this:

to this:

And more recently to this, in which I bought back a few of the missing books:
Here are a couple posts about the original catastrophe:
I've just been living with a much smaller book collection the last few years because I didn't have the space to rebuild. But now that I'm going to have a dedicated library (yay!!) in the new house, I've started making trips to 1/2 price and Goodwill pretty regularly, trying to find replacements.

This was mailed towards the UAE in May of this year.
It just got back to us.
I have never seen that stamp before. I love, love love that someone in the Osaka post office has a specific stamp for Hey This Shouldn't Be In Our City and ALSO a plain white sticker that's just there to make the stamp visible!? Amazing. Perfect. I want to meet this person and see their desk.
