California Primary: Is This the End of the George Floyd Moment?
California Primary: Is This the End of the George Floyd Moment?
Since the massive nationwide protests that erupted in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, the debate over crime and public safety in the Democratic Party has been dominated by urgent calls for reforming police departments and confronting entrenched racial inequities in the criminal-justice system. History might record yesterday’s elections in San Francisco and Los Angeles as the end of that…

the app?
to get updates on the city's campaign against poor people??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We’re again rushing to penalize people who are just trying to survive on the streets,” said [J.C.], an attorney with the Oregon Justice Resource Center. [...] “We don’t have the adequate infrastructure to house and protect people in a safe manner,” [J.C.] said. “And yet we are passing a law that could lead to excessive punishment when truly there aren’t enough options for people.” [...] Violators can be punished with a fine of up to $100, up to seven days in jail or both. “If you are really, really poor, $100 might as well be $100,000,” [S.K.] said. [...] The new policy is already in effect. The mayor said notifications will be sent out [via a new app] so everyone knows the rules as it is enforced.

The Portland City Council passed a new version of an outdoor camping ban Wednesday morning, capping off weeks of fiery debate, particularly between Mayor Ted Wheeler and Commissioner [R.G.], about how aggressively the city can police encampments without running into the same kind of court challenge that halted the original ban last year. [...] [T]he council vote was unanimous [...]. The new ban passed as an emergency ordinance, allowing it to take effect immediately rather than after the usual 30 days. In a news release, Wheeler's office said enforcement will begin in the coming weeks [...]. "We do fear [...]," said [L.A.] with Sisters of the Road, a social justice nonprofit in Old Town. "We are hoping that we actually return to actual root causes solutions like lowering rents in Portland," said Armony. [...] Violators can be punished with a fine of up to $100, up to 7 days in jail, or both [...]. "When it comes to fining people in poverty, all that does is deepen their poverty," said [S.K.] [...] of Blanchet House, a nonprofit that helps care for people living on the streets. "A $100 fine to the people we serve might as well be a $100,000." [...] Wheeler said new technology is in the works to help organize efforts around the ordinance. "All of this is going to be tracked using an app that was developed by my team," [Mayor] Wheeler said on Wednesday. [...] The council enacted the original daytime camping ban in June of last year, [...] but homeless Portlanders challenged the ban in court and a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge placed an indefinite hold [...]. Wheeler introduced his new proposed version last month, which he said was designed to withstand a court challenge [...].

You know how we always talk about how intersectional dogma just allows assholes to operate under a thin veneer of ideological armor? How racists like Biden will tell people they can’t be black if they don’t vote for him, or Nancy will say we can’t manage borders or Florida farmers won’t have slaves to pick her cilantro.
Just pay lip service, play into the delusions, the false realities of the victim stack, feed the corporatist complex treasure and power and you get a pass to be a corrupt piece of shit, a rapist, a child molester, a groomer, or a flaming racist.
Consider that Project Veritas has created a business model exposing who these people really are by just talking to them “off the record”.
Imagine being so comfortable in your position that you would speak like this with impunity. Clearly not the first time.

Special thanks to this column for enraging me at the crack of dawn so I have the wakefulness and energy to get going to the airport.
A lot of Angelenos remember the 1984 L.A. Games, when the Olympics actually ended with a surplus, the only Summer Games to do so in the last 60 years. Local politicians and voters changed the city charter to ensure that no L.A. taxpayer dollars would go to backstopping the Games.
LA28 ignored that lesson. Instead, the City Council and the state Legislature agreed to financially step up should any cost overruns accrue. Los Angeles is pledged to cover the first $270 million, and the state will cover the next $270 million. After that, the city is responsible for additional costs...
The estimated cost of the Los Angeles 2028 Games has already risen from $5.3 billion at the time of the bid to $6.9 billion today.
I am SO ANGRY about this. I was angry about this when former mayor Garcetti was pushing this through and I'm angry about it now.

Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, tweeted out an unfounded conspiracy theory Sunday morning about the attack on the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from a website that has a history of publishing false information.
Musk responded to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she tweeted out an L.A. Times story about how the suspect in the attack on Paul Pelosi, David DePape, spread far-right conspiracy theories.
"There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye," Musk wrote to Clinton, linking to a story published on a right-wing website called the Santa Monica Observer that questioned the circumstances of the attack on Pelosi, according to an archived version of the story. (The website was no longer accessible late Sunday morning.)
As of late Sunday morning, Musk's tweet had more than 24,000 retweets and more than 86,000 likes, and was quickly gaining more traction.
The fact-checking website Media Bias/Fact Check rates the Santa Monica Observer as a "questionable source" based on "the routine publication of false and misleading information and the use of poor sources."
Media Bias/Fact Check said the website's article on the Pelosi attack "appears to be fake and defamatory."
Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.
The Santa Monica Observer has also published other fake stories that falsely reported that former Secretary Clinton died in the September 11, 2001 attacks and had been using a body double since then, and that Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, was appointed to a non-existent position in the Department of the Interior under former President Donald Trump.
The publisher of the website, David Ganezer, unsuccessfully ran for Santa Monica City Council in 2010 and 1988, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press. He is currently a registered Republican, voting records show.
Musk's tweet comes just days after his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter was finalized. Musk has said he will loosen rules about what kind of speech is allowed on the platform. That vow has prompted concerns that the changes could drive users and advertisers from the site.
DePape attacked Pelosi, 82, with a hammer after breaking into their California home early Friday. The suspect was searching for the House Speaker, who was in Washington, D.C. at the time, two sources told NBC News.
Police arrived after Pelosi called 911 when the suspect wasn't looking.
Pelosi suffered a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands, according to Drew Hammill, spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He underwent successful surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, Hammill added Friday.
Police said DePape will be charged with attempted homicide, among other charges. Officials have said they are still working to determine a motive in the attack.

DND Campaign: L.A. Numinous
The Pantheons of the World are not as fantastical or mythical as you might think. They are around us, always hiding in plain sight. They hide from the Mortal Realm, having forgone most of their earthly attachments after the Great War, the World War, the Last War that they would put themselves through.
They hid their World, their mythologies, their fantasies from the Mortal Realm, between the cracks of what can and can't be seen. There in the unperceived, the lives of fantastical creatures, of ogres and fairies, of kitsune and deities, they continue to survive.
It's 2028, just 6 months before the Summer Olympic Games starts anew in the City of Angels, Los Angeles. You scroll through your X feed, look at the current trending topics: Articles about Whales and Dolphins taking over the sea; The Olympic Flame being ignited in Greece; And the death of an Instagram Model with no leads. It's almost banal and boring as you flick through tweets.
Perhaps, just at the corner of your eye, you see a little miracle, a trick of the light or a creep of a shadow. But something/someone tumbles over you, a friend, a loved one, a mentor you've known for some months, weeks, or maybe only a few days. They're blood soaked and their eyes are pleading, worrying, and saddened, as they look at you, clutching at wounds that only look seconds old.
"Aphrodite is dead. This was not how I meant for this to happen but I'm sorry but I must pass my Eidolon to you before it's too late."
Light flashes before you could even ask. You find yourself engulfed with it, bathed in it and then... nothing.
Now there's a dead body in your hands and an ominous feeling in your chest. Your phone beeps and rings to life with a spoken message. You're pretty sure it didn't have that feature before.
"[Player Name] , you are summoned before the Divine Council to be condemned for the Assassination of a Deity and Usurping their Status. Cooperation would be most advised."
ART CREDIT: Tony Sart, Javier Charro
Hi, hello, Name's Kiri or Hex or Vai! I hardly ever post on Tumblr anymore or advertise any campaign ideas here due to school but this one has been nagging me just a little bit more after listening to Stray Gods, watching American Gods, and rewatching the Percy Jackson films, so I needed to just write down the blurb and the pitch in case anyone is wanting to play some DND in a Divine Urban Fantasy kind of setting.
INFO
The game is set in contemporary Los Angeles, a few years into the future, a few months before the Summer Olympic Games. You have been accused for the assassination of a Deity and usurping their power and status, their Eidolon. Through the Eidolon, you gain power and are now able to perceive Los Angeles in its truest form, a City of Mythical Creatures living in secrecy.
During Character Creation, you will choose a Deity from any Pantheon (Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Egyptian, Norse etc) whose Eidolon has been passed down to you.
This is going to be a Human-centric campaign so, despite the advertisement of other races in the game world, physically your character will be Human. Through the power of the Eidolon, they can be reskinned with the capabilities of other DND races.
Gameplay will be roleplay heavy, debating on either PBP semi-live text or just Discord VC with a separate channel for Texting RP. But there will also be combat involved of course.
The DM, me, hi, has a flexible schedule but I am in PST so applicants who are close to that would be preferred.
Current Allowed Resources are PHB, Xanathar's, Tasha's, and Mythic Theros
Depending on interest, around 4-8 rotating players can be taken.
If interested, DM me or like this post for more details so I can get back to you.

It Never Rains in Southern California
Termination was an ugly business.
Ugly for the one getting the sack and the Watchers Council had little use for drawn out or contested terminations.
Wesley had gotten a letter and a phone call.
The letter had been from the Council and the phone call had come from his father. Both had been brief and each had left him with an empty pit in his stomach and no uncertainty of his own worthlessness.
His disgrace with the Council was so great that they hadn't even sent him a ticket home and he had been stuck between the rent on his leased place and affording a plane ticket.
He hadn't even asked his father for help. Hadn't gotten in more than a few mumbled words on the phone. There had been a lot about his failures and the disappointments and shame he had wrought. That had been the bulk of it.
With the Mayor defeated and the children graduated time seemed to have come to a stand still.
Cordelia had left Sunnydale almost immediately and with the school gone the others were no longer forced to include him in their meetings.
Wesley had eventually decided to leave town too.
He'd thought of stopping and speaking to Giles but in the end he hadn't seen much use in it. Giles hadn't particularly liked him and he supposed now that some of that had been his own fault. He had been pompous and rude but then they hadn't exactly made things easy for him either and Giles had been there the whole time making sure no one took him seriously.
The battle with the Mayor had been hell on earth but it had prevented a more real kind of hell from spreading and shamefully he couldn't say that he remembered more than the beginning. He'd been knocked unconscious almost immediately.
And now he was on the road, no money to rent a car and crammed onto a buss with fifteen or so other people.
The truth was he did have some cash but with no employment in the foreseeable future he was choosing to be careful with it. A bus was cheaper than a car and easier for him too at this point.
He slept most of the way and woke up outside of Los Angeles to the sound of people clamoring off of the bus.
It was dark out as he checked his watch and squinted through the grimy window at the world outside. The city was in the distance so why had they stopped?
He looked around and saw that it was just him and an old woman on the bus. Everyone else was outside.
"Have we broken down?" He asked her.
She looked at him, wrapped in a coat that didn't agree with the weather outside and didn't answer.
Curious, he rose and exited the bus, looking for the driver in the small throng of people. There was no smoke coming from the bus and he saw now they were parked outside of a small rest stop.
People were lighting cigarettes around him and stretching their legs but he couldn't tell which was the driver and it made him uneasy stopping like this. There were too many things in the night the others weren't thinking of.
The bus driver is smoking and so he heads to the rest stop and it's bathroom, ancient linoleum cracked under foot and sink hazardous to touch.
He feels humbled in a way. Like someone in the movies catching a bus into L.A..
It's not where he's ever seen himself ending up but here he is.
On the outskirts of a glowing monolith, L.A. with her Boulevards and Rows. Her Hills and Valleys.
He's too ashamed to go home.
He washes his hands despite the hazardous sink and stares at himself in the dirty mirror.
He's fucked up. He's fucked up so bad and the worst part is he'll think it again in the future and it will be much worse but right now this is the most he's ever fucked up and he feel's sick with it. Stepped on.
All of his school down the drain. . . years of studying and researching. . . of trying to prove himself and be good enough. . . he'd never felt good enough and now he knew he wasn't.
He didn't even know what he was going to do in L.A..
He doesn't dry his hands on the towel that's got what looks like a few years on it already and shakes them out as he leaves the bathroom.
Outside he doesn't see the others and looks around, feeling a tingling sensation creep up his spine.
It's dead silent out and there's no wind.
He pulls his jacket around him, finding it more suitable for the climate now and returns to the bus, seeing no one on it.
The he looks down spots a cigarette butt still glowing in the dirt. . . there's a few of them. . . all glittering like little stars.
He looks up and feels his skin break out in goosebumps as he steps onto the bus.
The old woman is still there, sitting in her coat with her hands in her lap, clutching a handbag that's nearly as old as she is. "
"What's happened to everyone?" He asks.
She looks up and shifts slightly, pointing out the window. "They all went out there." She say's in a croaked voice.
He looks where she's pointing.
Where the cigarette butts are laying.
"I afraid I just came form out there, are you alright?"
She shifts again and lowers her arm, looking at him with ancient eyes. "You're the last." She breaths.
He blinks and then realizes he very much does not want to be on the bus at this moment.
He stumbles backwards but she's rising out of her seat, coat rustling as she stands impossibly tall in the cramped, little, bus.
The doors open and he falls into the dirt and the cigarette butts, scampering away and to his feet and noticing a strange kind of blackness on his hands as he runs.
It's a demon. It's some kind of demon and it killed everyone else on the bus.
He runs for the rest stop and flings himself into the bathroom, chest heaving and heart hammering.
He doesn't know if the old woman has followed him yet but he'll need to know in a second.
Think, he tells himself. . . willing the gears in his mind to work. He knows what this is. Yes it's a demon obviously but he knows. . . he's read about this.
It's a Resamun. . . it eats travelers. . . it's a shap shifting demon. . .
He can almost picture the text book, the pages. . .
It's usually noncorporeal except when it eats. . . it hides in groups of travelers. . . it's vulnerable to Iron and. . .
Or did it haunt rest stops and places like this?
Maybe it could do both. . . he'll look it up after he remembers what it's vulnerable to.
This is a basic level demon.
He was just unprepared.
Like he'd been the entire time in Sunnydale.
He shuts his eyes and thinks hard.
The demon is weak against water. People can't travel in the rain and so neither could it even if the times had changed that some but this is Southern California. . . it never rains here.
He stares around him and his eyes land on the sink. The thing will dissolve if he get's it wet, maybe even die.
He has to get the water to the demon and his mind works furiously to devise a way. He has to act soon. The thing will be after him.
He's the last one.
He thinks of the cigarette butts in the grass and wonders if he should have known sooner. If he should have guessed at all. If those smoldering butts are all his fault.
He finds a bottle of cleaning solution under the end sink and dumps it down the drain, refilling it with water and stepping back outside.
The old woman is in the bus door, impossibly tall in her coat.
He straightens his shirt and walks towards her. "You're a Resamun demon." He says, lifting his chin slightly.
He has the upper hand now.
"You absorbed all of them, didn't you?"
The old woman steps off the bus and seems to grow a little as she shuffles towards him but she's slow and so he opens the jug.
He could warn her, tell her what he's going to do but he doesn't.
He's tired and he's fucked up again.
He throws the water on her and she stops, look of shock on her ancient face before she shivers and turns into a cloud of steam.
He's alone again and this time the wind lifts his hair.
The city is in the distance and the sun is coming up too, far away.
The butts aren't glowing in the grass any more.
His last stop before L.A. and he supposes that at least he did get the demon in the end.
He wishes he could feel good about it as he get's his bag and leaves the bus and rest stop and everything else behind.
Later, when the sun is fully up he'll find a car dealership and buy a bike and no longer footing it he'll pass into L.A., heading towards more than he can imagine.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously today to approve a resolution in support of the Writers Guild’s ongoing strike and urged the studios “to come to the bargaining table and reach a fair deal with the workers of the WGA.” The strike is now in its 60th day. “The entertainment industry has long been considered the backbone of the region’s economy, and the WGA represents tens of thousands of Angelenos,” the Council said in a statement. “But the changing business model of the entertainment industry towards streaming services has left many underpaid and overworked. Now, writers are facing the largest assault on compensation and working conditions that they have seen in a generation, with other sectors of the industry like actors and stagehands also struggling to make ends meet.” “This is a fight for the future of Hollywood,” said Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, who represents most of Hollywood, which includes the Netflix and Paramount studios. “As we hit day 60 of this strike, we can’t allow these big corporations to play games with the future of this industry and refuse to pay their workers a living wage.”

Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez has resigned from her position after she and two other councilmembers were recorded making racist remarks.
The California and Los Angeles branches of the NAACP demanded late Sunday that Council President Nury Martinez and the others resign after the Los Angeles Times reported she called a Black child a monkey.
The NAACP chapters also called on Councilmembers Gil Cedillo, Kevin de León, and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera to step down for participating in a discussion with anti-Black and anti-Indigenous comments.
Martinez referred to a white councilmember's child, who is Black, as "ese changuito," or that little monkey, during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, according to the leaked audio of a nearly year-old conversation.
Martinez also reportedly said that the councilor, Mike Bonin, handled his son as though he were an "accessory." She also referred to Bonin as a "little b---h."
Herrera suggested that Bonin puts his young son out in public like a lawn jockey, the racist statues used to invoke the antebellum South.
Martinez also is heard making fun of Indigenous people from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, who have migrated to Los Angeles.
She referred to them as "short little dark people" and called them "ugly."
The secretly recorded conversation revolved around the councilors' frustration that the growing Latino population wasn't resulting in more Latino council districts and concerns Black leaders were keeping some Black-majority ones.

Peter Tork and James Lee Stanley, August 2001. Photo courtesy of Lewisville Area Arts Council.
“[I] worked in a nightclub called The Shadow. And I think it was late June [1964] that the Phoenix Singers came through, and Peter was in the band, he was the banjo player in — behind the group… And he and I hit it off, and that Monday night, we did an impromptu show together, we just played a couple of tunes, you know, and had a good time, and stayed friends. And then when I opened a club in 1965, there was no place to play in the winter in that area — Virginia Beach, Norfolk… So I opened a club on my own with two friends, we called it The Folk Ghetto, and I contacted Peter in New York City and said, ‘I wanna hire you to come down here for a week and be the headlining act.’ Which he did. [...] He was, he was fantastic. He was so good. [...] Anyhow, we became friends, and we were friends ever since. As I was a Chinese linguist in the Air Force, I was overseas while The Monkees thing happened, so I didn’t really, I didn’t really experience him as a celebrity, you know, I just experienced him as my pal Peter. And I can tell you that he’s been one of my best friends for my entire life. And one of the more generous people I’ve ever known. And just to give you a window into the kind of guy he was, he would come off a Monkees tour where everything was handled, you know, they would take care of his tickets, they’d take care of his room, they’d carry his instruments, they’d carry his bags, he just had to show up at the airport and they gave him the, you know, the ace treatment. And then he comes off a tour like that and he gets in a rented Dodge with me and we drive around the country playing little rooms, which we filled to the max because it’s Peter Tork, and then he demands that, because I booked all the dates, I take a booking fee off the top. And then he demands that we split the door. He, I mean, you know, he didn’t have to do that.” Q: “Just the fact that when things went south for him and he was working as a busboy at Great American, that just speaks volumes to the mettle of the man to me.” Q: “Yeah. He was, he was just my best friend, you know. And a great spirit. And I just got a wonderful post from his brother Nick, who said that… you know, Peter was in L.A. and he wasn’t really doing anything, and I — we would hang out, and I said, ‘Peter, I noticed that all the other Monkees have solo albums. Why don’t you have a solo album?’ And he said, ‘Well, I just never got around to it.’ I said, ‘Well, you know, I have a label, I have national distribution, and I have a studio.’ I said, ‘Why don’t we make a record and we’ll try, you know, we’ll shop it to the majors and if nobody picks it up, we can still put it out on my label. So there’s no doubt about it, we’re making a record that’s coming out.’ And he said, ‘Okay.’ So we worked on it about four months, and at the end of the four months, he said, ‘You know what, James? I don’t want to shop it. I want it on your label.’ So I got to put Peter Tork on my label without, you know, paying a huge upfront thing to have a world-famous celebrity on my label. You know, he just said, ‘No, let’s do it with you, man.’ He was, he was great, he was just a great guy, you know, Loved the blues, loved the blues, he just would hang out at those blues clubs on his off-nights.” Q: “I just watched you and him at the Tin Angel on YouTube.” JLS: “Oh, right, yeah, there’s a lot of those up there, I think, of Peter and I playing around the States. I looked at a piece of it and what struck me was how much genuine affection there was between us. You know what I mean? I forgot what a joy it was to go out there and play with somebody you love, you know, that you’ve known all your life.” Q: “You can see, it came through, as old and choppy as that video is, it comes through.” JLS: “Yeah, it really does, it really does. And I also was surprised how — I didn’t remember that we were so tight. My recollection is it was pretty loose and casual, but evidently we worked out a lot of little things.” Q: “To be honest, I wasn’t even going to bother you, but that actually compelled me to call, I think... you know, the two of them look so happy together.” JLS: “Yeah. Yeah. And, and I knew since last fall that, you know, he’d ceased the treatment and was just, you know, riding it.” Q: “Was it from that same cancer that had plagued him previously?” JLS: “Yes, yes, it… it came back. It came back and he, they did some kind of experimental stuff and it didn’t work, and so he just, he said, ‘Enough.’ And he just, you know, bit the bullet. And then he called me at Christmastime, we talked a long time. And, and it was the first time he said, you know, ‘I wanted to mention the elephant in the room.’ I said, ‘Well, I’ve been tiptoeing around it for the past year.’ And then we talked about it, you know, we talked about our friendship and our lives together, and apart. And I talked to him not many times after that because he was, he was very tired, he was, you know, he was failing, man.” - Tales of the Road Warriors, March 7, 2019
“Tork later confided in his brother Nick that Stanley had given him his life back. ‘I wept when I heard that,’ Stanley says.” - Stranger Things Have Happened 2020 reissue liner notes

Free advice to anyone running for POTUS: When they ask you about the $50K you owe in child support & the $500K you owe the IRS, don't dodge the questions. It makes you look ridiculous.
The Green Party US has 10 months to come up w/a better candidate, maybe a labor leader?*

Additionally, West was spotted this week at the sentencing hearing of Mark Ridley-Thomas, convicted of "seven felonies — bribery, conspiracy, four counts of honest services wire fraud, and one count of honest services mail fraud — in a scheme in which he extracted benefits from USC for himself and his son while on L.A. County’s powerful Board of Supervisors," according to the LA Times, as one of Ridley-Thomas's supporters.

For background on Mark Ridley-Thomas, see this article from Knock LA, a grassroots homeless advocacy and support organization featured in our most recent reading, "Infrastructures of Community": https://knock-la.com/mark-ridley-thomas-anti-homeless-camping-laws/ Knock LA reports that, "rather than acting as “champion of the homeless population,” [Ridley-Thomas] acted as champion of homeless policy," and that "Ridley-Thomas introduced legislation for LA Municipal Code 41.18 on June 30, 2021, which bans “sitting, lying, or sleeping or storing, using, maintaining, or placing personal property in the public right-of-way” around transportation structures (everything from driveways to freeway underpasses) [...]. So far, the measure has been used to effectively ban homeless people from taking up space at over 140 sites across the city, with $2 million allotted by the council for the signage alone."
After leaving the courthouse, West was asked why he was supporting an LA politics insider convicted of bribery when his companion shooed the interviewer away, saying they were "putting West's life in danger": https://twitter.com/theveganforest/status/1696290380361162759
As one commenter put it, "Starting to think this Harvard professor-turned-TV gadfly might not be on the level regarding his commitment to left-wing politics."
