Remembering Michael.
“I have a great deal of respect for Mike as a musician and a songwriter. He’s very good. He could make it on his own easily. Also he’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.” - Peter Tork, Flip, August 1967 "Mike’s a song writer, one of the best in the country." - Peter Tork, The San Francisco Examiner, November 23, 1968 (x) "Mike Nesmith makes good records, but Thorkelson considers Nesmith’s greatest talent to be his ability to craft great comedy.” - The Bowling Green News Revue, May 24, 1979 (x) “I remember staying at Mike’s house in Hollywood when we first started filming the series. It was the upper story of a two-story building on a little hillside. Mike’s wife, Phyllis, was wonderful. Mike and I laughed a lot and played music together. I remember that time very fondly.” - Peter Tork, When The Music Mattered (1984) “Michael was very kind to me at the outset. He put me up through the entire shooting of the pilot process. He and his wife had a wonderful little apartment just big enough for a guest on the day bed, which overlooked Hollywood. I remember a Thanksgiving Day when the air was crystal clear in a way that I’ve never seen it before or since in L.A., and you could see all the way out to Catalina. It was wonderful. That crystal clarity symbolizes the whole era for me. Mike and I wrote a few things together. We were very comradely and very buddy buddy, and it was a wonderful time, with Mike’s then wife, Phyllis, and Christian, their little infant baby. The early days of the pilot shooting were just great by my lights and I had a wonderful time.” - Peter, quoted in Hey, Hey, We’re The Monkees (1996) “You should’ve heard Mike singing some of those old Jimmie Rodgers The Singing Brakeman songs. He was so good, that stuff was just — you know, that stuff just warmed the cockles of my heart, you know. He could just do that stuff all day long. Just — I could just sit at his feet and listen to that for hours.” - Peter Tork, WHNN-FM, 2012 (x)

Top Ten Songs that my Roommates Hate:
If I’m good at anything it's being obnoxious. Here’s ten songs that I love, but drive my roommates up the wall.  Ranked from their most to least tolerable.
10.  “Bangs”- They Might be Giants
Starting off very tame, “Bangs” has the signature TMBG geeky sound and whiny vocals. The song conjures imagery of pocket protectors and protractors. With lyrics like "royal flyness" and talk of concordant angles, “Bangs” is likely a big hit in the math department. Hey at least they've got taste.
9.  “Billy Don't Be a Hero”- Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
What's better than mass manufactured 70s bubblegum pop hit about the Civil War? A cover of the Paper Lace ‘classic’, “Billy Don't Be a Hero” tells a story of a soldier killed in combat, in the most catchy, kitschy way possible. It’s a very addictive song, so please listen responsibly.
8.  “Xanadu”- Rush
“Xanadu” by Rush is not to be confused with the 1980 Olivia Newton John film of the same name, though both are pretty polarizing. The only critique I can offer is that at only 11 minutes, “Xanadu” is entirely too short. Who wouldn't want to " To stand within the pleasure dome, decreed by Kubla Khan” with Geddy Lee. Sounds pretty cool if you ask me.
7. “Motorcycle Mama”- Harpo
Everyone knows that a truly great musician is defined by their references to other, better musicians. Unlike the other songs on this list ( with the exception of Gaucho) this is a bad song, but it's a blast. Harpo’s so caught up in trying to string Ravi Shankar and Fritz the Cat together that he entirely forgets to pay any attention to the rest of the song.
6.  “Be True to Your School”- The Beach Boys
Clearly, my roommates are lacking some serious school spirit. Just wait until some loud braggart tries to put them down. They won't know what hit them.
5. “Your Auntie Grizelda”- The Monkees
I'm a big fan of the Monkees, but even I have to admit that “Your Auntie Grizelda" is an annoying song. There is a definite reason Peter Tork wasn't placed on vocals, but I think there's a certain charm to having a singer who can't really sing.
4. “Schlock Rod Pt. 2”- Jan and Dean
“Schlock Rod Pt. 2” is nothing if not unique, it's an obnoxious conversation between two men, complete with constant voice cracks. Set to a tune consisting of clanging metal and sputtering car engines, it's satire, and I’ll defend it till the end. Think this one is annoying? Check out part one.
3. “Gaucho”- Steely Dan
I apologize in advance to all the Dan Fans out there, but damn this song sucks. Listening to “Gaucho” is like being transported to your grandpa’s pontoon in the 80s, and when a song mentions ponchos more than once, there’s a fundamental issue lyrically.
2. “Sally MacLennane”- The Pogues
The best way to listen to any Pogues song is at an ear-splitting volume, though the people I live with might disagree. If you have too many friends, this will either take care of it (especially if you listen at strange hours of the morning) or you’ll meet the best people you’ll ever know. Rest in peace, Shane MacGowan, you are a legend and a genius.
1. “Strap on That Jammy Pac”- Ween
Recorded on a four-track cassette while both Dean and Gene Ween were supposedly huffing Scotchgard (they probably weren’t) and had mono (they probably did); “Strap on That Jammy Pac” is the first track off of The Pod, which is easily one of the best albums of all time. Shout out to Ween for this much needed addition to blues-country history.

Happy birthday, Micky!
“[N]o one of us really supported any of the others except that, that I like to think that I tried to support Micky in a way which, for some reason, he never did pick up on. I mean, I think that Micky has a certain kind of genius that he was never able to acknowledge in himself.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters radio, September 1989 “I’ve always thought that Micky was far more creative than he ever gave himself credit for. He’s a vastly more talented individual than he’s aware of.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters 1995 liner notes “I’m just delighted to be onstage with [Micky and his always great voice]. You know, that — that my fortunes are such that I’m allowed onstage with that is a true blessing in my world.” - Peter Tork, BBC WM, 2015

How did you first get into CSNY? If you want, you could talk about each of them individually.
ahhh thank you for asking this! It's kind of not an exact story, because in a way I've always been "into" CSNY because I've been familiar with them musically for a while, but I only recently became extremely obsessed with the band members.
I've been a fan of Neil Young's more popular music since I was a kid, because my parents are fans of his. (They've seen him in concert three times and they actually saw CSN one time. the jealousy). My earliest Neil Young memory is looking at the cover of their Mirrorball and Harvest Moon CDs.... I didn't know anything about him as a guy for a long time though. But who wouldn't be compelled by this image
Tumblr media
who is he.....
In a roundabout way I've been a Buffalo Springfield fan for much longer than I've known anything about CSNY too, because my personal entryway into my obsession with 60s/70s music and culture was the Forrest Gump soundtrack (thank you to my parents' CD collection again). That happened nearly 10 years ago (that origin story is also kinda wild and very formative I think I've half talked about it before)
I sort of tripped into picking them up this intensely right now. A few months ago I bought Stephen Stills' self titled album at a record store at the same time I was getting the Monkees Greatest Hits because I though if he's good enough for Peter Tork he's good enough for me (hilarious), and strangely enough realized there were a lot of songs on the album I already knew that I just didn't realize were his. So I've been listening to that album a lot a lot for half a year almost.
I also became obsessed with finding Deja Vu on vinyl because I was deeply into Our House, and it wasn't that hard to pick up. I quickly had like... a religious experience listening to it one night so they really started to get their hooks into me. I think a lot of my obsessions actually start due to deep emotional experiences and shifts rather than some calculated coherent thought.
The easiest quickest answer is that I started reading CSNY by Peter Doggett. My Dad read it a few years ago and I remembered him enjoying it so I picked it up and its been really really interesting learning more about each of them, and thats where I kind of started to fall in love with them all and their stories (especially Neil and David who I also just . fell in love with deeply and developed huge crushes on . hi guys)
Also sneaking into two Neil concerts last month really cemented Him for me. He's got a world of respect from me and easily became one of the most significant artistic voices in my life right now and is getting me through a really tough time in ways I can't even describe. Art that saves you... its a gift you can never repay.
TLDR; I've always been into them, I'm newly into them, they've always been here, they're showing up in new ways for me every single day. They're a representation of a part of history and a movement of art that has been a part of my soul since I was a kid, they're a fresh thing breaking through the cycle of pain and apathy I'm living in. They mean a great great deal to me.
