It's been bugging me for a while that we have so many canonically queer characters now but none of them ever DO anything! It's like after they get two characters in a queer relationship they just never give them any conflict after. We didn't ask for more representation because we wanted that character to no longer have interesting stories outside of a queer identity we wanted you to stop queer baiting us.

I know that word gets tossed around a lot, but there is very strong evidence for TimKon, StephCass, and GhostBat where they practically confirm it but they never say anything explicitly. Supersons were literally shown to live together, co-parent Lizzie, and were explicitly paralleling other canon couples last week.

But it's too much for Kon AND Tim to be queer, so they gave Tim a civilian boyfriend that he never has any conflict with and all of the build up and tension that comes with trying to clone your dead teammate 99 times and being a hair away from making out for like 8 years.

Robin AND Super boy couldn't be canonically queer so they aged Jon up and then gave him a civilian boyfriend he never has any conflict with all while parading them around in elseworlds because they knew fans were upset about the lost potential.

Even Harley and Ivy fall victim to this in a different way. I love that they're canonically queer! I just wish that at least Ivy got to keep some of her villainy. I don't think they should have to compromise being menaces to society with being queer.

And it's related but I hesitate to call it queer baiting... what's going on with Dick Grayson. He gets confirmed bi in a non canon video game but he has more pride covers than Tim. Like you can't dangle an extremely queer coded character in front of us and then just never make it canon. And I'm tired of one off implications too. We deserve better representation than a one liner played off for a joke (Batstantine this is about you I fear) but they won't because they know full well they won't do a damn thing with him after.

You wanna know what we should be striving for? Midnighter and Apollo. Messy their whole run time, uncompromisingly interesting whether they're together or not, happily married with a daughter, and yet continued to be unerringly bad ass. John Constantine, with all of his shameless flirting and raunchiness. Grace Choi and Anissa Pierce. The pining, the break ups, the make ups. Obsessed with them.

Joey Wilson!!! You want someone whose already canonically queer who Dick has a lot of tension with? He's right there! The son of Dick's arch Nemesis. Both of their willingness to go over people's heads to protect them. Joey's ability to completely take someone's free will (and his deliberate and spiteful choice not to) vs. Dick's constant fight for independence (and his willing surrender to the pull of his family). Dick's unwillingness to communicate his feelings or experiences with literally anyone ever paired with Joey's uncanny ability to read him like a book. Are you joking. The mess, the tension, the INTRIGUE!!

This got away from me but I want my queer characters to be interesting again pretty please.

Okay soooo, first time I'm doing something like this, but I wanna introduce a fave oc of mines today that I've been working on for a longtime now :)

Her name is Nadja Al Ghul-Wayne-Kent and she's a Damijon kid

The name Nadja means "hope" in Arabic. My very dear friend @theredheaded-stuff was the one who helped me pick it. And her hero name is Super Canyon, which is inspired by the Canyon Wren bird

Backstory:

After being inspired by the story of how Kon was created, a secret group of no good scientists, who just love causing chaos with many of their inventions, decided one day to create a mixed clone of both Damian and Jon, thinking they can do better than Lex did, so they collected both of the boys DNA's after one of their recent battles in public and got to work. Once their experiment was supposed to be done, they saw that their machine had actually created a baby girl instead of a grown, powerful clone like they had wanted, so they were ready to dispose of her as a failed subject, but were suddenly stopped just on time by Damian and Jon who broke into the place and kicked their butts after finding out that a recently committed crime they were investigating was caused by them. When they were done, the boys found Nadja and were surprised to find out she's a clone related to them both. They decided to take her with them and made her their daughter to raise together after that.

Personality:

She's helpful, stubborn, is as intelligent as Damian is, friendly but also tough when she needs to be, observant, sometimes a little too honest about things but doesn't always mean it as rude, courageous (a trait that can be pretty helpful sometimes, but also get her into really big trouble during dangerous situations too), a prankster, and very protective of others, especially her loved ones

Abilities and skills:

She has the usual Kryptonian abilities, which are flying, super strength, superhearing, superspeed, superbreath, ice breath, invulnerablity, x-ray vision, and laser vision that's purple instead of the usual red (because Lois has purple eyes, so it's something unique that was passed onto her that way). Sometimes they don't always work though and can accidentally get out of hand too since she's still growing and learning, but Jon aways tries his best to help her get better at using and controlling them. Nadja also uses many concentrating tips from Damian too for improvement, like meditating for example and other things like that, and he helps her practice them

And because she's half Kryptonian, she also has a couple of unlocked special abilities of her own too, which is invisiblity, the ability to phase through walls and objects, plus the power to also transfer the heat of her laser vision into the palm of her hands to burn who or whatever she touches and she can also let it absorb her whole body too if she wants, which makes her even more untouchable and at the same time lets her release a strong fiery blast around herself onto enemies or incoming threats (her body glows completely purple whenever she does this and if it's just her hands, the same happens to them too). Nadja hasn't been able to properly master these special powers yet though, only one of them, which is the invisiblity one

For skills, thanks to teachings from Damian, plus Talia whenever she visits her, Nadja knows how to use a sword and fight well in combat in case her powers aren't working the way she urgently needs them to during patrols and missions

Random facts:

She calls Damian Baba and Jon Dad.

She calls Clark "Grampops" and Bruce "Grampbats". For Talia, she calls her "Grandmother" and for Lois, she calls her "Grandmama".

Her best friend is her same age Cousin Dick II, the Son of her much older Cousin Jake Grayson and his Wife Meredith Robinson. In the Batfamily (besides Damian), she's close with all her Aunt and Uncles. And for the Al Ghul's, she also gets excited whenever she visits Talia and Ra's. And while she definitely also gets along a lot with her other relatives who are in the Superfamily, the person she's most closest to there (besides Jon ofc) is Kon, due to them both being created as clones meant for evil but turned out good instead, which got them to bond even more as Uncle and Niece.

Her voice sounds like Clementine's from Telltales the walking dead games, but specifically the version of it from season 2 for the tween age she's in right now.

She has messy hair like Jon when she lets it loose. Jon is the one who always has to brush her hair whenever it gets tangled up, since the steel strength of it is just too difficult for Damian to actually handle himself.

Nadja laughs at Damian's jokes all the time since she gets his dark humor and he loves that. They always laugh a lot about it together but when Jon's around, they're Iike "You wouldn't get it" and he gets all offended.

Jon passed his love for noodles onto Najda and Damian's usually like "That's not healthy!!" And tries cooking her vegetarian meals more often or healthy ones that Talia would used to make him back when he was a kid, just so that Najda will eat real food lol. Najda also really loves the meals that comes from Damian's culture too and gets happy whenever he makes them for dinner.

For nicknames, Jon will sometimes call her "Sweetpea", "Sugar cookie", and "Tootsie pops", while Damian calls her "Habibti", "Thamin" (meaning "precious" in Arabic), and "Galbi" (which means "my heart" in Arabic)

Damian matches his outfits with Nadja all the time just like Talia would always used to do with him when he was a little kid. He does this with Jon included too and they take pictures together.

When making her hero suit, Damian was the one who helped Nadja out in drawing the designs and brainstormed ideas with her. When she had finally found one she liked and was ready to make it, Damian and Jon could've helped her sew it and everything, but they didn't have many materials that she could use or a sewing machine either, only a regular sewing kit that they use to fix up their own suits whenever they get damaged, so they let her make it with Ma's help instead at her place when they visit her and Pa again, since she actually owned a machine and also had a sewing room filled with many useful materials. When asked, Ma didn't mind letting Nadja use her stuff at all and was instead delighted about it since it would just give them the chance to spend time with eachother while doing one of her favorite hobbies together.

And next time, while having their usual Mother and Son days out together, Talia helped Damian pick out the sarong skirt for Nadja while hanging around stores, since they thought it would be nice for her to have one. Jon was the one who bought Nadja the red sneakers while shopping together with Kathy, since it reminded him of Kathy's old purple, rainbow ones, but with a twist of red thrown onto it, which also reminded him a lot of his favorite old ones that he used to always wear as a kid too. Dick and Cyborg helped her insert digital tech into her cuffs, which lets out hologram screens that let her know whenever she's over using her powers since she's still mastering them and it does plenty of other useful things for her too.

Najda was also given a mask to go with her suit at first too since she thinks it's annoying to wear glasses in her regular life everyday, but then it got lost during a fight and some villains saw her face, so she was still forced to go with the glasses route in the end anyways.

As adults, Jon's a scientist and Damian's a veterinarian. Najda likes visiting both of her Dads at their day jobs after school and doing her homework there while they work. She always promises to behave and not get in the way and if she has no work to do, she'll help them out too, which they appreciate. She also loves watching what they do and let's them happily explain their favorite stuff about the job to her. She knows a lot about taking care of animals and science because of this.

Nadja loves music and making it too. She even thinks about playing rock music for a living when she grows up. Damian and Jon support her in this and buy her the instruments she needs and they also listen to her songs when she wants to show it off to them. Because of them being in a band themselves back when they were kids, Damian, Jon, Chris, and Jake give her lessons sometimes on how to better play her instruments.

Civilians and especially interviewers always question about how they had Nadja and just assume that she's adopted or assume that just because she looks more like Damian, she's probably from a secret ex girlfriend he had before being with Jon. The last one annoys both Damian and Jon so much, especially Jon since Nadja is actually his kid too and he gets jealous at the thought of the ridiculous idea. Both him and Damian hate these rumors and just want everyone to mind their own business.

Bring Me Home Arc 3 Part 4

All the parts I've shared from the ask game collected into one post! I didn't add more than a sentence, I'm afraid. It seemed to fall on a perfect scene break.

Story Summary: Jack and Maddie install a new ghost shield on the house which activates the moment Danny tries to step into his home. His secret is out and his parents are determined to excise the ghost from their son.

Luckily Danny isn't alone. The Young Justice, Sam, Tucker, and Jazz aren't going to leave him to suffer.

“Hold him down, Jack!” cried his mom.

“I’ve got him, sweetie. Go ahead,” replied his dad.

The knife was cutting into him again. Deeper and deeper.

“I know who you are, Danny. But I could never, never love a ghost,” sneered his mom. She drew her hand back and stabbed right into his core.

Danny woke screaming.

Hands were holding him down, restraining him, pushing him. Pain radiated out from his torso from the endless torture he’d been undergoing.

“Stop! Stop! It’s me,” he begged.

He begged. He could talk. The muzzle was gone. And he was lying on something soft.

The figure above him wasn’t wearing orange or blue. And he wasn’t shouting in anger, but concern.

“Danny! It’s okay, you’re not with them. We got you out. You’re safe now.”

“Secrets,” croaked Danny.

“Yeah. That’s right. It’s me. Back with me?”

Danny nodded and reached out, fisting his hand in his friend’s shirt. He didn’t try to stop the tears.

Tim clasped his hand over Danny’s. “I’ve got you, Polaris. Always.”

“Hurts,” said Danny. He closed his eyes, only for images of the lab and his parents to fill his memories. He opened them again.

“I’d say you’re due for some more healing ectoplasm if you can take it. And I can reapply some of the salve to your injury if you’d like.”

Danny shook his head. “Is… the ice. Is there more?”

“The ice Jazz and Sam put inside your injury?”

Danny nodded.

“Yeah, there’s plenty. How do you take it?”

“I can suck on it. It’ll help. And… yes. More of the salve, please.”

Tim nodded. Then, louder, he called, “Kon! Pull over, could you? Danny wants us to add some more salve to his injury and I’d like you to remove his bandages.”

“Will do, Rob!” replied Kon from the driver’s seat.

Then the vehicle was slowing and pulling over. A moment later, Kon appeared next to Tim.

“I think I heard something about the ice, too? Which containers is everything in? I’ll get it.”

Danny let his mind drift as Tim and Kon figured out the logistics of helping him. Throughout it all, Danny never let go of Tim’s shirt and Tim never let go of his hand.

“Danny,” said Tim, tapping the back of his hand. “I’ve got the ice. Ready for it?”

Danny nodded and the case opened without Tim doing anything. Tim’s other hand had one of the heavy gloves on it that would keep him safe and he picked up a piece before holding it out.

Danny opened his mouth and Tim fed it to him. The chill spread out pleasantly from his tongue, cooling the fire of pain radiating from his chest just a bit.

As he sucked on the medicinal treat, Kon used his TTK to remove the bandages. If only he’d been around more—never had bandage removal been so painless before.

Tim had to let go of his hand to spread the healing salve, but Danny didn’t let go of his shirt. The first touch of a gloved hand to his chest had him flinching away and begging for mercy, but Tim’s reassurances and Kon’s jokes pulled him back to reality.

“Hey, ghost boy, freedom sure smells great. The back of a van and the interstate. Couldn’t get much more comfortable than this. Doesn’t that prove you’re not back with them?” Kon asked.

Danny tried to smile, but was afraid it probably looked more like a grimace.

Tim huffed. “If you think I’m gonna let another one of my friends die on me any time soon, Polaris, you’re out of your mind.”

“Not allowed to clone me,” warned Danny around the ice he was still sucking.

Tim flushed and focused on applying the salve. “I’ve grown as a person since then.”

Kon huffed. “You better have.”

Before long, they finished. “How’s that, Danny?” asked Kon.

Danny hummed as he took stock. Touching the injuries had obviously come with its own pain, but the area was now under a numbing coolness that helped beat back some of the pain. “Better,” he said. “Thanks.”

“Great!” said Tim. “Do you want anything else? Let’s try to get you a few spoonfuls of ectoplasm and yogurt. You need your calories if you’re going to heal at all.”

Danny frowned, but acquiesced. “Fine. But I want another piece of ice when we’re done.”

“You’ve got it,” agreed Tim readily.

“Well, looks like it’s back to driving for me,” said Kon. He stood and stretched before heading back to the front of the vehicle and out of Danny’s sight.

This time, with the salve numbing him and the nightmares still haunting him if he closed his eyes for more than a blink, he ate much more. He finished an entire vial of ectoplasm and half the yogurt before he couldn’t stand the thought of eating any more.

“Talk to me?” he asked before taking the second piece of ice.

“Of course. What do you want me to talk about?” asked Tim.

“Anything,” admitted Danny. “Just need something to distract me.”

Tim hummed in thought. “Well, I know I’ve talked about Gotham before, but it’ll be different now that you’re coming with me to live there rather than visit. You’ll be moving in with me to my civilian apartment. It’s a penthouse downtown near the Drake Industries offices. My dad may have nearly ruined the company, but Bruce has been helping me build it back up. I’m not officially in charge, but as my dad was the owner, I’ve got a controlling interest.

“There’s lots of places to eat nearby. My favorite is this little hole-in-the-wall Hispanic place run by a Puerto Rican family. You have to try their empanadas. Simply to die for. I’ll get us take out from there when you’re finally up to eating something more solid than smoothies or yogurt. There’s also a killer pizza place within walking distance…”

Danny let the words drift over him, and this time, when he closed his eyes, he didn’t see images of his parents or the lab. Instead, he saw himself and Tim and a new chance at family and home.

Tim will not survive if another one of his friends dies on him. He's finally got Kon, Bart, and Bruce back and he will not lose anyone else.

19 year old Phantom woke up strapped to a table in a lab in another dimension. He hadn't been to his home dimension in years for various reasons he really didn't want to discuss and spent most of his time in the Infinite Realms exploring with Ellie.

Danny casually phased out of his restraints and began wondering around. He heard the sounds of combat several floors down and figured that was why there was no one bothering him at the moment. It wasn't long before he came across a room filled with literal infants in hospital cribs and the only thing Danny could think was oh ancients, I got cloned again.

Needless to say he made several duplicates of himself and picked up all five children, cooing at them until they settled. Before making a portal back to the GZ Danny created a virus out of ghost lightning (something Technus taught him) and infected the computers to erase all data on it, regardless of wheat that data was.

By the time the Young Justice team burst in lead by Kon the information was already half destroyed and the clones that were made of each of them and the mysterious pit creature were gone.

By the time Tim managed to stop the virus there wasn't much left on the computers that was useful. They got a tiny bit more information on the pit creature, basically just 2 pictures of it. One of it sleeping in a talk filled with Lazarus water and one of it asleep restraints to a metal table. Other than that it was noted that its blood was a much much more potent version of the Lazarus Pit and was capable of bringing inanimate objects to life and at times giving them sentience.

They did get some camera footage of Phantom waking up, and everything that happened after, including the portal he made.

Kon was distraught that his little clone child was gone.

Five years later Danny was none the wiser that most of the kids weren't his biologically. Not that it would have mattered much to him anyway. Danny had no idea why his daughters hair was blond. (Cassies clone) He didn't know many people from his extended family due to his parents being disowned long before he and Jazz were born so he just assumed it skipped a generation or two. Besides, she and one of her brothers (Dannys clone) had the same icy blue eyes as him. One seemed to have the same auburn hair as dannys mother and was ridiculously fast (Barts clone) and the biggest one (Kons clone) loved sunlight and danny made extra sure to bring him out to sunny areas often after a health scare early on. He already learned out to shoot lasers from his eyes and Dannys only concern was that the lasers were red instead of pink or green, which was unusual.

The smallest and smartest of the pack (Tim's clone) was very clingy and affectionate. He was almost always with dannys clone either playing together or being menaces to society. There was rarely an in-between.

It was on one of thier little adventures (Danny looks away for two seconds and the whole lot of them are gone) that they wondered back in to thier home dimension and got noticed pretty quickly due to Kons clone very obviously having kryptonian superpowers.

Here's were the problems start.

i like to imagine young justice as that group of friends who, around anyone else, aren't especially affectionate or anything but the second it's just them they are all over each other. in someones house? cuddle pile on the couch. in a car? five of them are piled in the back seat and anita, cassie, and cissie are all braiding bart's hair while he sits on the floor. you bet your ass that lump you see under the blanket in tims room is eight people reading creepypastas while in a knot of limbs. just hanging out? greta is on kon's shoulders with Anita sitting between his knees with her back to the couch, tim is laying with his feet in kon's lap and head in Cassie's, cissie is laying on the back of the couch, slobo is on the floor and bart is doing everything at once.

but in front of others? no, tim does not want a hug. hands off clark, he is an independent punk clone. no need to be so protective, mom. bart, bart does want a hug. go away bonnie. give greta a hug she needs one. anita is fine without her dad, thank you very much.

but with each other? they are running towards the hug. they just want all the love from each other.

Okay, so while I do loathe the tendency of DC to become completely centered around just the Bats and Kryptonians; I do love when a strong dynamic between two of them is formed and becomes a core part of how fans view the characters. Not just shipping, but that too.

Like... We have the classic chums, Bruce and Clark, constantly steeped in homoromantic tension, regardless of how little DC want to admit it, but also from that closeness we got Nightwing: a hero raised by Batman but more interested in being a part of his "uncle" Superman's legacy.

Then, when Kal-El's estranged cousin and Batman's commissioner friend's daughter meet, Supergirl and Batgirl form a recurring duo that for awhile was just as shippable if not more so than Clark and Bruce. (And tbh it's kinda a shame that we rarely see Kara and Babs hanging out during Oracle storylines)

And after the deaths of Jason Todd and Superman, two unlikely teens stepped in to try to fill those roles before either could pull their rendition of a phoenix rising from the ashes: Tim Drake and Kon-El: the Robin that found Batman and the clone that would be Superman. Both struggling with who they wanted to be and who they were expected to be at birth, but united by that with a team of similar young people that wanted to just be themselves. (And possibly the most shippable duo in the whole lineup)

Later into their lives, both heroes found themselves with sons. One by choice, the other by circumstances out of his control. These sons were Jon Kent and Damian Wayne: the first naturally born half-Kryptonian/half-human eager to get into the heroing whist his parents desperately try to make sure he gets to just be a kid, and an assassin trained from birth that chose his father's kinder mantle over his grandfather's castle built on bones. Both stuck between halves and initially stuck together because of who their parents were. Despite their differences, or possibly because of them, they each found the other to be a kindred spirit, and grew to be inseparable friends with so much potential between them that their respective families basically dread the two of them without supervision. (Tho arguably they were more primed to work well together than Damian would like to admit, as Dick Grayson, then former Nightwing, had been the Batman to his Robin and his surrogate father figure for much more of his early hero days than Bruce had.)

And then, after many a death, rebirth, reboot and retcon, we find two cast-off members of these families... Jason Todd: an anomaly caused by a fracturing multiverse, his past even more a patchwork after that multiverse rebooted and then again when his found family of Outlaws regained their previous timeline friends and memories; and the third Bizarro of post-Flashpoint Earth One: fated to follow in some of the footsteps of Bizarro No. 1(the third Bizarro pre-Flashpoint) but cast aside for not being the same as the second Bizarro of his own timeline, who sacrificed himself to save it. Brought together thru meddling by Lex Luthor along with Artemis, an Amazon who'd also been uprooted from her past's continuity, they became like family; Jason and Artemis helping Bizarro to find who he wanted to be for himself and all finding some semblance of peace in a world that accepted none of them with open arms.

(Yes, I could get into Diana, Donna and Cassie's wonderful dynamics with their respective Bats and Kryptonians, but they're not as integral to the meeting and dynamics of the others, and the WW family isn't as frustratingly all consuming of the DC comic lineups)

you just walked into my askbox and went "i'm gonna activate tumblr user mamawasatesttube's trap card!" i hope you know this.

so YES, firstly. i do believe changing his look to fit in with everyone in smallville had something to do with it, BUT. it's not just a case of "oh small town = conservatism, homophobia, transphobia, etc". it has more to do with him having a civilian persona for the first time in his lifie, and not knowing how to do that. through all of his time in sb94, he's never really fit in with "normal people" - he was always held apart from his classmates in hawaii, then he simply never interacted with regular people while living at cadmus, and finally when he lived in metropolis in the suicide slum it was. well. not good.

so moving to smallville and having a secret identity to protect - not just his own but superman's secret identity - is a lot of pressure to perform a role he's never played before. it's not even so much about small town attitudes so much as it is just the contrast of what he's used to and the concept of "normalcy". superboy, the clone of superman who's a hero and a celebrity, has never had to worry about being normal and not drawing too much attention. conner kent, on the other hand, has to worry about that very much.

he takes out his earring. he cuts off the longer parts of his hair and lets the shaved part grow back in. he grows keenly self-conscious of being a "geek" and making too many references to this or that media. for the first time, he starts paying consistent attention to what other people think of him and how they talk about him. it's not the same as his identity crisis before, when he just was worried about being "cool" and got a makeover about it; this is about something bigger than him, something so much more important than just his reputation. he has to keep this secret. it's not freedom, at first; it's a burden he's trying to learn to carry.

that's part of why he resents smallville at first. it's a whole new set of rules and restrictions and boxes he needs to fit into. and he's used to rules and restrictions and fitting into boxes, but these ones are nothing like the ones he knew before, and the stakes feel so much higher. he misses his "freedom" from before, so he hates "conner kent" and what smallville represents.

at this point, he doesn't really know that his gender and sexuality are involved in this repression. he just knows the way he dressed before and the way he acted before get attention in a way he doesn't want now, and he assumes any feelings of ickiness and missing anything are just tied to his whole resentment of smallville. it doesn't click for a long time. he just straight up doesn't clock that he has any gender-related feelings outside the norm, and he doesn't register any of his attraction to guys as attraction. he's deeply in his "overinvested straight ally" phase (think of his interactions with hero cruz - defending him from sparx and telling her homophobia is Not Cool!!).

and then he dies.

to establish a core part of my feelings about smallville... as someone who grew up queer in small town america, i am Deeply critical of everyone who dismisses rural areas as entirely conservative, intolerant, and bigoted. these people definitely do exist in rural areas, sure, but they are by no means the only ones (and they also very much exist in urban areas, too). to that end, i don't think smallville is just a ~homophobic little town~ where kon is miserable in the closet because of external pressure.

i do think kon does languish miserably in the closet for a time. but it's a lot of internal pressure and identity issues at play, not just the worry of homophobia. he spends a lot of time introspecting after his resurrection, learning to love his life with ma; it's during this time that i think he starts to actually realize his feelings about himself are queer feelings.

one of my personal favorite headcanons is that the first person he ever admits any of this to (first that he thinks he's into guys, bc that's the first one that he actually puts together) is hero cruz. hero is definitely the friend who's been out the longest, and very possibly (though ofc this can depend on personal hcs!) his only friend who's out at this time, given that he and cassie Just broke up.

now a major reason he struggles in the closet here is the idea that being queer as conner kent would mean deviating from the "normal" as conner kent. and conner kent is supposed to be a very normal guy, to fit in and fade into the background, to not draw attention. and that's his major hangup. it's easier to consider if superboy could come out than for conner kent to come out, because superboy has never been normal. he's always been set apart. but conner kent? conner kent has a vital secret to keep. he doesn't want anyone looking at him.

he finds it harder to accept queerness as a civilian than as a hero bc as a hero he's already "weird" and "alien" (literally), right. he can be loud and proud and obnoxious there and it doesnt matter! but conner kent is supposed to be ~normal~ and not like kon-el. conner kent is keenly aware of everything that makes him not fit in, and for a long time those things bring him uncertainty and shame because he is still struggling to try and figure out how even being a civilian works, let alone living a civilian life that's """abnormal""". it takes him a hot minute to work through this.

and then senior year, there's rumors going through smallville high because this one guy wanted to bring his boyfriend to prom but the school prom committee head teacher wouldn't sell a couple's ticket to two boys who are known to be dating despite selling them to plenty of girls who say they're just going as friends, and now a bunch of students are protesting by getting same sex couple's tickets and insisting on going actually as couples, and of course kon has to join in on that, he will always stand up against injustice even as a civilian...

...and one thing leads to another, and conner kent finds himself making out with simon valentine in the back corner of the dance hall, and they crown him prom king despite it (or maybe because of it!) and he's stunned because he didn't know he was popular (because he's kind, and loved, and funny, and good) and he's still popular despite clearly being into men now, and it's not a bad thing in everyone else's eyes, and oh? that was allowed all along?

and it's freeing.

that's the first step to exploring gender. first he has to let himself admit to being queer at all, and admit to being okay with it rather than needing to repress it forever, and it's kon. of course that only happens once he can use "helping someone else" as the reason.

NOW back up a large step. there's a second component to all this i haven't dug into yet, and it's about fashion.

more to the point, it's about ttk. one of my Favorite hcs is that he practices it via fibercrafts, even before his death but especially after. first crochet, then knitting, then bobbin lace, slowly increasing the number of moving parts he's working with; he ends up making a lot of lace.

ma uses some of his little lace scraps as bookmarks. he makes a bunch of doilies and then table runners. it's genuinely great ttk practice, but really, they have a lot of lace. so kon starts learning to sew, so he can start making lace-embellished tablecloths and then some simple circle skirts and things for ma. they sell some of them at local farmers'/crafters' markets.

and kon starts wearing some of it himself. at first he's really self-conscious, but... it's something he made, and he's proud of it, and it does look really good, so. fuck it. he and ma can go to do groceries wearing matching skirts, right? (circle skirts are easier to sew than pants, okay. pants have so much more going on. he's still teaching himself, okay!!!)

it takes him a LONG minute to realize that maybe some of the "oh, i do look good in this!" feelings might, in fact, be gender euphoria. as in, he doesn't realize it until after he starts unpacking his sexuality feelings and going ohhhh. conner kent is actually allowed to be queer and that's okay. only then does he realize that uhm... maybe conner kent is, like, extra queer. like, turn up the dial and add more spice.

with time, support and encouragement from friends and family, and some exploration, he gains more confidence in exploring presentation and actually thinking about gender. he doesn't really care that much about pronouns, but he Does hate being confined to traditional masculinity - he does enjoy being masc sometimes, but he hates the idea of having to fit in it as a box. he's much happier getting to flit around from masc to femme to all sorts of places in between. he finds it freeing.

okay i have rambled so much. this is more or less my idea for how the overall arc of kon exploring queerness goes, but im sure ive forgotten bits and pieces and will remember them within like 5 minutes of hitting post. but here we are here it is ive been typing on and off for like an hour now so im cutting myself off. there it is. my kon gender and sexuality thesis.

But then Steph died. And then Kon died. And Tim and Cass sought each other for comfort, both thinking that the other was mourning their partner. But the truth is that Tim was mourning Kon more than he should Steph and Cass was mourning Steph than he should Kon. And maybe that’s when it almost clicked for them.

When Steph and Kon were back, Cass was so happy to see her “bestie” that she finally understood what it is she’s feeling. What she’s been feeling for the longest time. She broke up with Kon and he let her go without fight, but they remained good friends, often reminiscing on the time they used to date with humor.

I believe Cass was very supportive of Kon when he learned that Tim was dating Bernard and thought he lost his shot. And then very excited for him when he entered a polycule with them (who knows, maybe she helped her dum-dum brother realize his true feelings for his clone boy). And Kon was hyping up Cass until she finally got together with Steph.

I dunno I just love the idea of Kon and Cass being healthy exes and bonding over their journeys for self-discovery.

okay i am going to say something potentially controversial about sb94 now that i'm partway through and say that i think a lot of the big problems with it are exacerbated by the fact that karl kesel and ron marz had two different narratives they wanted to explore/tell regarding kon.

kesel very much wanted to explore the exploitation of the child star--and everyone around kon is exploiting him. rex is exploiting him for money and tana is exploiting him for her job. and i agree, kesel didn't go near hard enough in condemning the tana & kon relationship, but there are definitely nuggets there that the people around them knew it was shady and that the writers knew tana was wrong for pursuing it (you get her coworkers gossiping about her at the water cooler, her boss removing her from superboy stories because of conflict of interest, she's got a nasty look on her face while beefing with 16 year old girls, there's a decent amount of references to kon being underage the weekend before they get together she spends the whole weekend nagging and complaining about him before finally deciding to aggressively go for it when he's at his absolute lowest....i'm just saying that none of that comes across as particularly aspirational to most 16 year old boys lmao.). there's an expectation that as a working star, kon is expected to be an adult and have adult maturity despite being a child still. and nobody is protecting him because they probably don't see him as a human, let alone a child by the nature of his fame. who would be there to intervene and help anyway? everyone is exploiting him, they have something to gain from keeping him under their thumb, they're not there to protect him. some names you should consider while reading this part of the run are drew barrymore and brooke shields. in more recent memory, jennette mccurdy is another excellent one to consider. so when you ask why nobody is interventing and condemning characters like tana and knockout, it's the same reason nobody batted an eye at drew's mother giving her cocaine at 9. or brooke shields being in pretty baby. even today people get outraged at some 30 year old actor dating a 17 year old, but nobody ever actually intervenes in those situations to protect the child in question and the 30 year old is almost never punished socially or professionally for their skeezy behavior.

and immediately after the knockout storyline, you pivot over to ron marz. and marz very much preferred to explore the peter pan, never going to grow up, what is the humanity of a clone angle versus the child star angle. marz is the one who froze kon at 16 because he wanted to explore the peter pan angle of the boy who is not human and can't grow up and talk about the ramifications of cloning and humanness, makes the love triangle with tana and roxy really stupid and forefront to the narrative without ever touching on the exploitation angle of any of it, gets rid of rex and his exploitation of kon, and increases kon's immaturity as just a perverted teenage boy who is now the aggressor in the relationship vs the exploitee, and so you get almost this incongruence and inability to resolve the exploitation in any satisfactory way because the story has changed. kesel wanted to tell the story of a child star who was forced to grow up and mature too fast and marz the story of a boy who can't grow up at all. idk. and those narratives don't have to be diametrically opposed and, in fact, could work together interestingly for kon, but the way they're written really only serve to exacerbate the overall flaws and problems of the other.

add that to the fact that the themes they were going for weren't necessarily written well and were very, very 90s in their nature and you end up kind of being able to see how exactly that book ended up so problematic in so many ways.

The funeral reception was held at Wayne Manor. Y/N stood with the Kent's by the memorial for her husband. She was torn in two. Her only love, her other half was now gone. She can't help but imagine him dying in so much pain. His brother's Jordan, Jonathan and Conner were nearby. Lois squeezed Clark's hand as she nearly shaked throughout. Many friends and family arrived paying their respects. The original team members came. Even some of the leaguers. Alfred and her parents, had been helping her through this difficult time. Bruce and Diana made themselves stand from afar so the rest of her family could do the same. Cassandra looked at her sister seeing everything she felt. She approaches with Tim, Duke and Stephanie. Cass didn't say a word but only hugged her. As they part Stephanie gave her the biggest hug she could.

"I'm so so sorry Y/N. It's OK if you want to cry" Steph said which made her cry "we're your family and we'll be here"

As they part Y/N dried her tears Duke hugs her.

They had always been family to her throughout her life. Y/N sits in her car. Her hands began to shake as she reaches to her keys. She tried to make her hands stop shaking. She laid her head on the car wheel. She slowly began to cry as she couldn't hold it back any longer. Bruce's heart was broken to see his little girl in such heartbreak. Diana nearly cried to see her, daughter in so much pain. She held Bruce's hand

"she can't leave Bruce. We have to tell her to stay home"

"I know" Bruce agreed

Y/N sees her mom opening the car door. She turns her head to face her. Diana holds her daughters hand to guide her out of the car. She hugs her daughter as she began sobbing as her heart was torn in two. Y/N made herself calm down.

"come inside and get some rest. We can send your brothers and sisters to get your things" Bruce said

She gently shakes her head as more tears fell "I-I-I can't"

"Y/N we want you stay" Bruce pleaded rubbing her head

"no you don't understand.. I have to.. I have to go to Argo..." she began to sob "for my baby"

The family supported her as she grieved her terrible loss and helped her anyway they could. The Kent's visited her, bringing food for her. As her pregnancy progressed. Y/N soon found out she was not only pregnant with one baby but two. A baby boy and a baby girl..

"how long have you known?" Conner asked Dick forcing his emotions to go further down.

"4 weeks I know I should have told you and I know he's your brother but I wasn't sure until now. I.. I'm sorry"

"I.. I understand.. Does Y/N know?"

"she's 29 weeks and I'm afraid.. I don't know what state Kon will be in. I know added stress could put her in premature labor.. And that kind of stress"

"I also understand but.. We tell her as soon as soon as we get my brother"

Inside the Med-bay of the watchtower. Kon laid with only his pants on, with his chest bandaged from the deep wounds. He was hooked to IV fluids and his face covered with a cloth to help the burns. Leaving the phantom zone was quite painful. Conner stood close by tensely. He could hear his heart beating as it was slow. Every time he looked at Kon... It made him feel sick. Conner couldn't be more grateful that he's alive but it tore him to see him in so much pain. Conner sat in the chair focusing on his little twin brothers heartbeat... Clark entered the room with Lois. The parents saw their sons both asleep. Conner feels a soft blanket laid on him. He opens his eyes and smiles to his mother.

"go back to sleep" she softly said

Kon began to gain conscious as he then remembered...

He gasps, he heard the heartbeats "they're ok" he mumbled, opening his eyes. His wife.. And his babies are ok.

They rush to him Clark rubs his forehead "hey son, I'm so glad you're OK" Clark cried. "you feeling OK?"

"I'm fine Pa" Kon said shakily

Lois sobbed and kissed the side of his head.

"my sweet baby"

"hey Ma"

Conner placed his hand on his shoulder in tears.

"crybaby.." Kon mumbled

"shut up Kon" Conner cried.

Soon there after Jonathan and Jordan came to hug their older brother. Y/N sat on the bed with her hand on her bump flustered. Diana sat with Y/N as her daughter held her hand. She had a minor contraction so Diana insisted that she rest.

"I-I can't stay here mom" Y/N cried

"I know it's hard but be assured that he's alive Y/N"

"I know" she cried.

She couldn't risk leaving Argo as the twins were continually trying to kick and Kon couldn't risk leaving with his injuries too severe. Y/N panicked as her phone rung as it plopped back and forth in her hands. Diana propped pillows behind her so her back was supported. Y/N held it tightly seeing that it was Kon calling her. Diana kisses her head and leaves to give her privacy. She began to stutter and answers. Kon takes a deep breath as his family left to give him privacy.

"hey honey" he said.

"hi" her lips tremble

It was really him. She broke into joyous tears. Kon's heart wrenched craving her touch and to be able to hold her.

"I've really missed you so much.. Dammit Kon I thought.. I thought I was going to loss my mind.. I can't believe I'm talking to you" she sobbed "I-I-I can't believe you are alive"

Kon allowed his tears to fall rather than dry them away "I'm so so sorry.. I can't imagine how hard.. How-- I can't apologize enough for leaving you"

"don't.. Don't apologize.. I'm not mad at you. I could never be mad at you. I love you"

"I love you too. I could hear them before I--" Kon stuttered remembering that moment "and I hear you and our babies now. I missed that. I miss you so much babe, it's torture"

"it'll be over soon and then you can come back home to me, to our babies"

Talking about Conner for a minute

Back in the 90s when Kon was first introduced I swear to god they have so much shit against him like he was so argegdh so many people just used him and he didn’t understand not to mention what’s up with all the fucking like 82836382 year olds getting with him??

Let’s go to Tana first people completely excuse it because he’s a clone sure it was addressed a few times but it’s so fucking weird because they do NOTHING about it the only good thing they did was making her breakup with him over the fact he never ages but still girl you’re like 23 and kon is 16 BARELY EVEN 1 mentally and you’re getting with him? Tf? What? Excuse me? She’s also creepy as hell. Not to mention she calls him KID like she knows he’s a child 😻 girl just does not fucking care 😻 “I love him” she says about a 1 year old ALSO THE OTHER THING THATS WEIRD IS SHE STOPS CALLING KON KID WHEN HE TURNS INTO AN ADULT SUPERMAN “a miracle is more like it I’m so glad you’re okay kid or kon-el or super man or…” MMM??? Also she was not concerned or confused or anything when kon didn’t have a name she never cared to give him one to ask about it Nothin’ she just called him kid AND THE WAY SHE REACTED TO KNOCKOUT why did no one ever help him? Or try and make sure he understood it was wrong? He was one ONE man 😭

People whispered and gossiped in backgrounds of panels but no one’s does fuckall about it

Literally only some time someone mentions it and any other time they make it seem like kon is a bad person there’s barely any conflict on tanas side NOT RO MENTION TANA BERATES KON because he’s ‘immature’ and it ‘hurts her’ she broke up with him once but because he was too immature for her not because of his age like 16 not even alive for a year and he’s all alone and has no one there for him And when he got with knockout no one was angry at it cause it was wrong cause it was a child being used for this whole adults pleasure and wants they were mad cause it was bad press not cause she was like 30 and he was barely 2

THEN THEY MAKE HER DIE INFRONT OF HIM ANS NEVER MENTION HER AGAIN
