The Way It Shouldn't Be - Final Part

They're playing a song Eddie would hate and everyone's paired up and pretending like they got ANY of Tommy's liquor, dancing wildly and laughing loud but not loud enough to drown out the song Eddie would hate.

Steve's on the fringes, watching.

Has his own alcohol, got a never ending supply from his Dad's office. He thinks of the massive blowout party he and Tommy and the boys always planned for. Post Prom Insanity: partying for two maybe three days and then taking a roadtrip together, see other places, go on adventures.

Tommy's engaged to Carol, who's pregnant and no one's meant to know but of course everyone does. He's gonna work for his Dad, the thing he always said he never wanted to do. Everyone else, Steve wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire so yeah, no party.

No road trip.

No Eddie.

But Steve's there; hired the tux and everything, so why fuckin' not?

He drinks and imagines fucking Eddie somewhere on campus, the music playing while they kiss. He imagines a lot of shit that's not ever gonna happen because good things don't last.

They're not made to last.

It's not the way things are.

Whatever.

Stupid Enola Gay comes on and Steve tries not get all caught up in the melody, the way the minor keys fuck him up.

Eddie's not coming.

He knows because he swung by Eddie's trailer earlier, met Wayne.

The older man was kind, but really clear when he said Eddie was staying with friends for a few days.

Steve is sulking.

Kind of spoiling for a fight.

First dick he sees harassing a girl is gonna eat it, simple as that.

God, he feels like a chaperone.

Like he's a thousand years old.

Cannot wait to get home, cry and jerk off before he falls asleep. Wonderful plans. Stellar.

'Fuck you,' he mutters, takes another slug. Enola Gay always moves him.

He gives up when the song ends, what's the literal point of staying when the best song is already gone.

He's sulky, moody and still heartbroken.

Still in love.

It's not how it should be.

He knows that.

But it's how it fucking is.

He's leaving, he decides.

He feels ruthlessly good about it when someone grabs his hand and yanks him with knowing roughness.

'Dumping out, Harrington?'

He whirls, blinks.

Is a little drunk but like... not enough for this.

'Eddie?'

He looks...

Oh my god he's kind of dressed up.

For Eddie, he's dressed up, meaning he looks way more Devil Worshipper than usual. Hair all roughed up and wavy, eyeliner, all black, laced untied and that godforsaken Dio cut off he adores.

He's got a silver earring in; a dangly rose. It's undoubtedly something a girl would wear, all sparkly.

'Oh my god,' Steve mutters, dazed.

Then he shakes himself and smacks Eddie around the face.

'OK, ow.'

'You fucker! You don't call me for weeks and now you just rock up here, looking stupidly hot--'

'Aww thanks, babe.'

'--like no time has passed and nothing happened!'

Eddie sighs, glances around.

'People are staring.'

'I don't care!'

'You're drunk!'

'Well, you're an idiot!'

'Well, I love you.'

'Well, I love YOU-wait, no. What?'

Eddie rolls his eyes, pulls Steve close.

'I want us too.' Then he lets out a shaky sigh, strokes Steve's face. 'Christ, everyone is literally staring but i--'

Steve kisses him.

The world jumps the tracks.

The song skips.

Nothing will ever be the same.

It's the best fucking kiss of his life.

'I wanna fuck you.'

'Right here?' Eddie's kissing him back, its delightful, fucking gorgeius. 'Man, you really are a kinky fucker, but I've actually for a surprise for you?'

'You're not gonna sing to me, right?'

'Have a little faith in me, Harrington.'

'Does it get us the fuck out of here?'

Eddie grins, grabs his hand again.

'So, what do you think?'

Steve can't think. His brain is all mushy.

'Um.'

'You don't like it.'

'Eddie,' he says with soft astonishment. 'You didn't have to do this.'

The van is big, spacious. Steve's been in it before when it was not spacious, at all. Eddie has cleared the back completely but more than that, he's got supplies inside. Bedrolls, pillows, knives (of course) as well as cases of bottled water, canned good, tools, a compass and a map.

'I heard good things about Chicago.'

'From who?'

'A lady trying to sell me tickets to Chicago, but look.' Eddie sighs, wraps his arms around Steve's middle from behind. 'I just wanna try. I wanna be with you and not be scared to lose out. I can't run, don't wanna do that.' He kisses his neck. 'I'm in if you are.'

'We could go anywhere?'

'Anywhere.'

'What if you hate me after a week?'

'That's why god invented hatefucking.'

'What if we get lost?'

Eddie's lips are warm against his skin. 'Sounds fun.'

'What if--?'

'Gonna save you some time, Harrington, there's a million reasons not to do something, OK? We don't have to, but I saw the maps on your wall. I know you want to blast outta this town and so do I. I love you, Steve. I'm being brave. You wanna be brave too?'

Steve leans his head back, looks up at the stars. He can hear the music from inside, muffled but still undeniable. Eddie's all around him, they're swaying a little.

He closes his eyes, smiles.

'Dance with me first?'

Third Person POV

"Shinju wa hitori dewa deki nai~" a man hummed happily underneath the sunset of Yokohama. It was quiet where he was. No cars, no people, just him on a pier over the water.

The pier was high above the water. The salty breeze tickled his nose and dances around his coat. The waves cascaded on the waves repeatedly, creating a soothing ambiance as the man stared into its watery depths. The water constantly moving, never still...what if he went in?

"Oi, Dazai. What are you doing here? Trying to do another attempt?" Another voice remarked.

The said man, Osamu Dazai turned around to look at the shorter male. His face was enigmatic, as if contemplating his decisions in life. "What do you want, Chuuya?"

"I was gonna clear my mind but then you're here," Chuuya growled, placing a hand on his hip as he stood besides the brown haired man. He kept one hand on top of his hat, making sure it doesn't fly away from the violent wind.

"Ew. A slug is next to me," Dazai dramatically gagged, acting  as if he was going to barf.

Chuuya side eyed him, too tired to deal with  dramatic suicidal maniac.

"Oi, bastard."

"What do you want, hat rack?"

"Tch," Chuuya refrained himself from lashing back, despite his muscles really wanting to punch the other man in the face. Dazai just smirked at him. "That new girl in your agency...what's her name?"

Oh? That was something Dazai did not expect Chuuya to ask this soon. Dazai smirked, placing his elbows on the rail as he gazed at the painting of warm colors in the sky.

"Didn't think you had nice taste in women, Chuuya." Dazai said humorously. "Well, her name is Y/n L/n. Quite the beaut, I'd say so myself. She's the new therapist assigned to work for our clients in the detective agency."

Chuuya hummed, his deep voice catching onto his throat slightly as his blue orbs stared at the water. The sunset seemed to melt into the ocean, adding a tint of orange upon the water's surface.

"That so? Good to know," Chuuya muttered pensively.

Dazai side glanced Chuuya, quietly observing his features as he figured out the meaning behind them. "Ah. Shortie has a crush now? Oh wow, and here I thought you were married to wine!" He said in a silvery tone.

"Says the suicidal mackerel," Chuuya retorted, feeling his patience slowly dissipating. "So what if I find someone attractive!"

"So you do admit~" Dazai let out a light hearted chuckling, making Chuuya jump away in disgust.

"How about we make a bet, hm?" 

"Bets with you would be the death of me," Chuuya muttered, glaring daggers at Dazai. To the taller man, Chuuya looked like an angry Chihuahua.

"A challenge then. Wine will be the prize~"

"...What is it?" The ginger grumbled, taking off his hat to place it over his chest as he turned to look at Dazai's profile.

Dazai looked back at Chuuya with a shit-eating grin that made Chuuya want to kick him into the water. The wind made both of the men's hair flutter gently at the rhythm of the breeze.

"I'll make her fall in love with me in 15 days or less!" Dazai smirked confidently.

"Oh yeah? As if I'd let you!" Chuuya stomped his feet like a child, looking pissed at Dazai's challenge. 

Chuuya's response only make Dazai' grin bigger and much more irritating.

"The timer starts tomorrow at eight in the morning. Good luck! You need it since you don't have her contacts~~~ Ack- Chuuya you're chocking me!"

"Kinky bastard, give me her number," Chuuya growled. He kept his gloved hand grasped tightly around Dazai's collar as he stared into Dazai's dead eyes.

"Ahaha. Left my cell phone in my house, aka trash can~!"

And overwhelming about of disgust crashed onto Chuuya, causing him to let go of Dazai.

"You dirty bastard! Nasty! No wonder you get rejected so often."

Dazai had never gasped so dramatically until that moment. He jumped back multiple times as if he had been struck. Slumping back, he laid his hand over his head, emotionally offended.

"Don't involve the waifus into this."

"Ha! Waifu?! You got no bitches!"

"Gasp! Neither do you."

"I have my wine! Besides, I'm 'bout to steal this Y/n L/n before your filthy hands touch her!"

"I've shaken hands with her."

"You will NOT make me jealous now!"

🍍 This man is trans! He'd been living in stealth for decades before coming out in the Forums

🍍Zim looked into Project Armstrong on his own time while recovering in the hospital from canon events. He didn't get far with it

🍍He tried to teach Zimverse!Kale the Torture Dance sometime in the past. Efforts were unsuccessful

🍍While I have mentioned him being in court before in RP, the reason was because he participated in a joyride as a teenager. Some questionable friends persuaded him to steal the Motozawas' car and they crashed it into a warehouse. Zim's dad sat with him in the courtroom for the trial- did not reduce his anxiety about the whole ordeal. This event led to a greater rift growing between Zim and his family

🍍He crushes hard on Macaron. If Mac wasn't his boss, he'd be more open about it

🍍Zim has had, at most, five long term partners overall, including Violet. Most of them... weren't great. He's also had multiple short term relationships, which I won't elaborate on, but they were 🌶️spicy🌶️

Deadass the majority of “think of the children!!!” rhetoric operates under the blatantly incorrect assumption that kids are just. Devoid of sexuality in any form. The idea that kids don’t have basic bodily functions, or curiosities, or even just the fact that sexual development (on a mental level) begins VERY early. This includes the concept of gender. Conservatives and other sex negative groups heavily rely on the assumption that children are pure beings devoid of sin that are then “corrupted” by the outside world (loss of innocence), as opposed to gender and sexuality being innate concepts present in all children, which is partially influenced by society, and partially influenced by biology.

Most people will tell you that they first started having sexual or kinky fantasies-- as well as masturbating-- either at a toddler or elementary age. Children will start asserting their gender at around 2-3, and is consequently when a lot of (though not all) trans people first realize and voice what is later identified as gender dysphoria. Children can start asking about the birds and the bees at almost any age; I started asking when I was 2. Hell, I was always very curious about human and animal sexuality! While parents in US schools are outraged and clutching their pearls about the fact that elementary aged children are learning about the reproductive habits of seahorses (yes, they’re mad that the males get pregnant, why wouldn’t they be), I was fucking researching that shit on my own volition while I was being homeschooled! I infodumped to my own fucking mother about seahorse sex! Only a few years later I was researching how clams had sex, and slugs/snails, and worms. Cut to present day and my primary special interest is sexology and I want to become a sexologist. It’s almost like I was naturally curious and exploring an undeniable facet of the world that is stigmatized for no reason.

And another thing, of course: accepting that children are sexual also requires accepting the fact that children can commit sexual assault, particularly against other children. COCSA is shockingly common and how traumatizing it is for the kids involved is highly variable. Some people regard their own experiences as simply innocent exploration, while others feel deeply taken advantage of and dirty, or somewhere in-between the two.

Also: “children can’t consent” is honestly kind of a weird/misleading phrase, and honestly kind of depends on ages. Teenagers can absolutely consent to having sex with their peers, for example. A minority amount of under-13 children may also engage in peer-to-peer sexual contact that may not necessarily be classified as COCSA by those involved. However, it is important to note that (for both kids and teens), they may not fully grasp the full ramifications and implications of consent and sexuality (hell, many adults don’t), and under no circumstances can they consent to a much older adult. The reason larger age gaps are less of an issue with adult relationships is because, even if there’s a noticeable gap in maturity, I much more trust the judgment of a 25 year old to gauge the risks of dating a 40 year old, compared to a 17 or even 18 year old. Minors can and often do engage in consensual sex, and a lot of the issues that arise from that come from a lack of comprehensive sex education and heavy stigmatization surrounding sexuality. The amount of teens who genuinely fear being kicked out of the house for getting pregnant is frankly appalling.

That’s another thing. The idea that sex education is sexualizing kids, when sex ed protects kids from potentially being taken advantage of, or at LEAST gives them the tools to tell an adult if they’ve been molested. Don’t tell them their genitals are a “cookie” or a “thing”. Say vulva/vagina. Say penis/balls. Tell them what their body is and does. Don’t tell them that it’s always okay if mommy or daddy touches them there, or if their doctor does. Most sexual abuse happens within families, and I’ve heard PLENTY of tales from doctors offices. If anyone touches them in a way they don’t like and they don’t listen when they’re told to stop, that’s when you start biting and kicking. I don’t care who it is. Most sexual assault is instigated by someone the victim thought they could trust. Instill that survival instinct early. I shouldn’t have to tell you how fucking terrifying it is to have kids be disregarded when trying to warn about dangerous adults, because their parents refused to teach them basic anatomical terms.

I also shouldn’t have to tell you how terrifying it is that school-aged children in Texas can’t ask for period products or learn about periods in some schools because it’s considered to be a sexual topic, or just flatly not mandated for them to accommodate. The only people sexualizing children’s bodies are the ones screaming about how children are pure, innocent beings devoid of any sexuality. Sexuality blossoms around puberty, which can begin as young as 9 years old. Most people recount that their sexual interests and behaviors took root during childhood. Most teenagers are horny fuckers who need to be told how to have SAFE sex, not to avoid sex.

Stop desexualizing the human experience. Stop treating sexuality like a sin or a corrupting force that warps the minds of children, and not an innate facet of most humans that is constantly developing throughout childhood, and even into adulthood. Your child could be LGBT, they could be kinky, they could flatly have an interest in sexuality. It doesn’t just pop up out of nowhere during puberty; it comes to a head during puberty. There’s a difference.

Nowadays nails are often known by the compound word chut-quy, with the same chut - or as chut-cul ‘thick pins.’ But how to distinguish a nail and a screw? Nails can be called quy-syot or chut-syot, literally ‘straight nail’ (compare English ‘straight pin’). Screws are called quy-ngyon or chut-ngyon.

The Tepatic word for a peg, nail, or screw is quy. Quy is spelt with the radical chut NEEDLE on the left side and the phonetic element quy on the right side - itself originally a picture of a peg.

Ngyon is the opposite of syot in this usage. It refers to all kinds of curly, kinky, coiled, helical stuff. The glyph is made of the semantic radical wit HAIR (depicting curly strands of wool) and the phonetic element kon (originally an image of a drum and drumsticks). So you can think of a screw as a curly nail.

Ngyon is found in other compound words. For example, snails can be called cup ngyon ‘curly slugs.’ The word kling refers to both sheep and goats indifferently; goats are kling syot and sheep are kling ngyon. So you could say goats are straight sheep, or sheep are kinky goats.

The best books I read in 2022

I read 125 books in 2022, which is a lot considering that I've been employed since mid-April. I will say that I read a lot of books this year in the visual equivalent of in one ear and out the other, and I had to look up a number of books on my list to even remember what they were. I reread 12 books this year, mostly for either book club or reading previous books before reading newly released sequels reasons. I only read a very few nonfiction books this year, so I've left out that usual section and stuck to fiction only. If you want more, shorter recs, I kept up an ongoing Twitter thread where I recced things as I read them. I've provided content notes where I remember them; as always, feel free to comment or message/email me if you want more information. This is long enough that I have put it behind a cut to spare your dash.

Top 10 fiction books/series I read in 2022

The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark - I couldn't put this down. The two pov characters are an investigative journalist and a con woman, and I loved watching their lives intertwine and overlap. Content notes: terrible men, off-screen sexual assault.

One Real Thing by Anah Crowe and Dianne Fox - This is not a good book. It's a m/m romance novel that's (melo)dramatic in a way that was entertaining and gave me feelings. The relationship has some kinky elements that are negotiated in plain language terms. Content notes: drug/alcohol abuse/addiction, mental health issues. Fair warning that some of that is dealt with in an unrealistic/would be unhealthy in real life way, but was satisfying in fiction.

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell - This m/m romance novel in space was one of my best books last year, and I reread it for my sci fi book club. It's still so good that it deserves to be on this list. Tropey and fun with non-annoying miscommunication. Content notes at the author's website.

Curse of the Specter Queen and Rise of the Snake Goddess by Jenny Elder Moke - These are very fun YA adventure novels set in the 1920s with puzzle solving, archaeology, and saving the world from ancient deities. Content notes: genre-typical violence, academic sexism. The second one also has snakes.

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry - This is a book that's good for just reveling in the language. I would frequently be reading and have to stop and just think about the interesting thing she'd just done.

The Tattoed Potato and Other Clues by Ellen Raskin - I reread The Westing Game because Worst Bestsellers (one of my favorite podcasts) read it for flashback summer, and it really made me want to reread this one too. As great as The Westing Game is, this is the one I remembered more and had stronger feelings about. I still had strong feelings about it and it's very good. Content notes: murder, past suicide attempt, past murder.

Sisters of the Vast Black and Sisters of the Forsaken Stars by Lina Rather - This is a pair of novellas about nuns traveling around space in a slug-like spaceship trying to do good in the world. You may remember that Sisters of the Vast Black was one of the best books I read in 2020. The sequel is equally good, and I continue to love them.

Sage and King by Molly Ringle - This is a very enjoyable m/m king/magician fantasy romance with a solid plot and a non-heteronormative world. I didn't realize it was BBC Merlin fan fiction inspired until I read the author's note at the end.

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi - This was so funny I literally laughed out loud multiple times. It's a delightful people in a sci fi world being friends and having weird adventures novel. Content notes: kaiju-related violence, some evil capitalists, the frame story involves the pandemic.

Hither, Page and The Missing Page by Cat Sebastian - These are post World War II British country village mystery romances with a m/m couple where one of them is a doctor with PTSD and the other one is a spy with flexible morals. They are absolutely delightful, and I loved getting to see what she did with an established/building relationship in the second one.

Top 4 books I read and then thought about a lot in 2022

The Unspoken Name and The Thousand Eyes by A.K. Larkwood - These are slow reads in a bad way - I was relieved it was truly a duology and not a longer series - but there's so much interesting stuff in them that I hope the author gets better over time. I read the first book for my sci fi book club, and we had a lot to talk about. The second book is both funnier and darker than the first book. I found the ending very satisfying. Content note: lots of violence.

Legacy by Nora Roberts - My favorite bad books podcast (Worst Bestsellers) read a Nora Roberts book a couple of years ago, loved it, now refer to her as "Our Lady Nora Roberts," and read at least one of her books every year, so I decided to finally try one of them. I was trying to pick a romantic suspense one kind of at random, but this one is not very suspenseful. What I kept thinking about was her character work. Everyone feels very, very real and I could imagine them as real people.

Sadie by Courtney Summers - This is an extremely intense YA novel. I couldn't put it down; I also wasn't sure how I felt about one of the elements of the podcast transcript framing. I'm not sure if I recommend it (I think The Project is the better book), but if it sounds like your kind of thing, it is very well written. Content notes: violence, child sexual abuse.

January Fifteenth by Rachel Swirsky - This is a near-future novella that follows four women over the course of one universal basic income distribution day. The world building was good and her character work is incredible to the point that I can remember how they all made me feel. (I'm going to be particularly haunted by Olivia.) It tackles some very serious topics without feeling heavy. Content notes: domestic violence, suicide, sexual assault, FLDS harm to children (including child marriage and the turning out of boys).

The author I read the most in 2022

I read 13 of Katee Robert's books this year - and I only read the first of them in November. Her books are short, fast read romance novels, mostly m/f, but with a handful of threesomes. I could not put down the O'Malleys series, which is about Irish mob families in Boston. The Sabine Valley books are where I started, but you will be disappointed that it's clearly meant to be a seven-book series but it's indefinitely on hold after the first two. These things take no effort to read and are completely addictive. Content notes: explicit sex, some arranged marriage/hostage taking setups whose consent issues are always resolved improbably quickly.
