During her sophomore year of college, she met literature student Jonathan Seibert. They dated for about a year before they got engaged. Unfortunately, in 1979, as they were driving from the airport to Martha's childhood home, they were hit by a drunk driver. Jonathan was instantly killed while Martha survived. As she had been driving the car at the time, she blamed herself for his death and her grief deeply affected her future relationship with Ray.

After the car accident, Martha began suffering from chronic pain in her left knee. She regularly attends physical therapy to help cope.

Martha originally wanted to be a doctor, but decided to pursue nursing instead in order to please her father, who was very old-fashioned and whom she admired. After receiving her nursing degree, she had trouble finding an open position in a hospital and took a job as a school nurse.

Jonathan's nickname for her, "Titania," came from the faerie queen in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

She had been selected from birth as an emissary and a vessel for Tiamat; following Tiamat's defeat, she broke things off with Ray (whom she didn't know was planning on proposing to her) out of both guilt for her actions under Tiamat's control and because she still hadn't fully grieved Jonathan's death. She moved to Paris for a fresh start, attending medical school there, and has lived in France ever since.

Yes, absolutely.

Paranormal:

My favorite paranormal romance series (possibly my favorite romance series in general), which has been very difficult for anyone to top, is Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole. Very hot, very funny, very high stakes, and very paranormal. A few of my all time books are in here. Definitely has an edge to it, so check your triggers (or feel free to ask me about individual books). It's so divinely insane.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood is a lighter paranormal, obviously, that I actually liked a lot. For people who've only read contemporary and aren't sure if they'd like PNR, this is a good taste test imo. It is a true paranormal romance, but Ali's style still comes through.

Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series is good; I've only read the first two so far, but I definitely enjoyed them. It's like... Vulcans meet shapeshifters? Great for people who enjoy an uptight meets wild moment (like me).

Thea Harrison's Dragonbound is SO good. It's a dragon shifter paranormal romance--I wasn't in love with the next two books in the series, but they are very interesting and I'm going to read more in the series. Dragonbound though... excellent.

Kristen Callihan's Darkest London series is historical paranormal, and another all time favorite series of mine. The one-two punch of Moonglow and Winterblaze just blew my mind. And Evernight? Please. Picture a Victorian romance, but there's an underground of paranormal creatures and societies. Great concept.

Bec McMasters has a series of steampunk-ish paranormal historicals. Her London Steampunk books--they include vampires and werewolves and such, and are really fun. I wasn't as hot on book 3 so I haven't read past that, but I plan on it. And a part of me wonders if my mood just wasn't right for book 3? Happens sometimes.

Sarah Hawley writes some really fun, lighthearted paranormal romances--A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon and A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch.

My favorite C.M. Nascosta by far is Run, Run Rabbit, which is a book about WEREWOLF LAWYERS! It's so hot. I love it.

If you want something on the dark gothic spooky side, Sierra Simone's Thornchapel is one of my all-time favorite series--and it's legit pretty creepy.

Fantasy:

Kerri Maniscalco's Kingdom of the Wicked -> Princes of Envy. Legitimately my favorite fantasy series at the moment. Typical disclaimer: you'll see Kingdom of the Wicked marketed as YA. It is not. Dark fantasy, super romantic, super entertaining, love it.

C.L. Wilson's Weathermages of Mystral is great--more traditional high fantasy romance.

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen is a recent release I love--think viking fantasy romance. And the heroine is initially married to her hero's dad. GASP!

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha. First in an ongoing series about a princess forced to marry a dragon shifter god she's secretly planning to kill... And her handmaiden, who's also an assassin/her lover. FFM.

Ruby Dixon's Aspects and Anchors series. Pulpy, fun, and adventurous fantasy romance series in which women from our world are hurtled into a fantasy world in this inter-dimensional situation. Super enjoyable and campy.

Milla Vane's A Gathering of Dragons. High stakes high fantasy romance, think battles, royal politics, TRUE enemies to lovers shenanigans.

India's Holton's Dangerous Damsels is like... historical fantasy romance, very whimsical and fun and light, set in an alternate Victorian era with witches and sky pirates and the such. GREAT.

In total I read 35 books (according to my Goodreads) as The Mindf*ck Series counts as 5 separate books and I also logged one 188k word fanfic from ao3 on there (not listed here). Obviously I read even more than this as I’m constantly reading on ao3 and Tumblr as well as books I started but didn’t finish (which I will hopefully go back to in the future).

Please look up trigger warnings for these books before reading as many of them contain explicit content! Both Cows and Woom are violent/disturbing horrors with themes and scenes that people may find triggering. Also the Dr. Harper books, whilst being aimed at teens I believe, also contain heavy topics. Furthermore, several of these books are considered erotic fiction so have scenes with explicit sexual content. And I’m Glad My Mom Died is non-fiction and a very heavy read too.

But I would recommend most of these, I’d say any with 4/5 or 5/5! My favourite read of the year was my last read - Forget Me Not by Karissa Kinword! It was a great way for me to end the year so I would recommend that highly :)

do you have any recs for books simmilar to acotar? but better lol

Hmmm I've honestly had a very hard time finding fairy books that don't suck (probably in part due to everyone wanting to chase ACOTAR's success) but in general I'd recommend:

The most "if you want an ACOTAR vibe but good" series, for me, is Kerri Maniscalco's Kingdom of the Wicked/Princes of Envy series. It is easily one of my favorite book things I've discovered this year. Similarly to ACOTAR, it begin with YA marketing, but I can assure you... the first book is pretty chaste (one kiss, though it is quite dark and violet and mature otherwise--our heroine is not underage) but everything after that is MOST DEFINITELY NOT. Like, it's really hot.

But yeah, Kingdom of the Wicked is the original trilogy, not standalones, must be read in order. Princes of Envy is the spinoff series (marketed as adult from the jump and thank God because again, nothing after book 1 should have been marketed as YA and the tone imo was never YA regardless of content) and these books are theoretically standalnes, though only one has come out thus far.

The basic premise of the original trilogy is that the heroine is a witch whose twin sister is discovered murdered, and her journey to find out who did it/take revenge leads her into this dance with the Seven Princes of Hell, in particular WRATH. I often refer to these as "what if ACOTAR was good", because you still have some fated mates vibes, this generally super magical spin, strong heroines, biiig romance. Amazing.

A Gathering of Dragons (2 standalone books so far, ongoing) by Milla Vane. This is fantasy romance with a big emphasis on BOTH of those things. There's a map in the book, which is always a good sign for fantasy lmao. A lot of the big fantasy plot is focused on like, dynastic struggles, and then you have rituals, magic, a barbarian hero attempting to recapture his throne, blood used as an Implement, virginity loss rituals by the light of the moon... It's real good.

The Weathermages of Mystral by C.L. Wilson (two books, ongoing but it's been a whiiiile since the last one, sorta standalone but should be read in order). Another series kinda focused on dynastic struggles--the powers are heavily weather-based (hence the name) and it begins with the arranged marriage between a conquering king with winter powers and a princess of the neighboring kingdom with like, summer-type powers. There are definitely fated mates vibes in both books--I reeeeally love this scene early in book one where the hero has the heroine up against a wall because he thinks she's ambushing him and he like, smells her with his enhanced sense of smell (he's descended from wolves) and THINGS GET WEIRD. And his buddy comes in like "HEY. YOU'RE BEING WEIRD BRO." Delightful.

Aspects and Anchors by Ruby Dixon (4 books so far with two novellas set in the same 'verse, standalones, ongoing I thiiiink?). So the basic idea of this series is that there are gods, and these gods get ritualistically punished by their father god every few centuries or something. So they're split into four "aspects"--arrogance, dishonesty, apathy, and hedonism, which represent their sins? And the aspects have to battle each other/hunt each other down until one survives and essentially becomes the convergence of all four. In order to stay in OUR plane, they must have an anchor, which is basically a bound human servant. GUESS WHO ARE HEROINES GET TO BE???

What adds a twist is that the heroines come from OUR world. Which adds a lot of humor to the whole thing, as per Ruby Dixon's style.

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha (one book so far, another due out in August, not standalones). This kicks off with a heroine who's agreed to marry a dragon shifter god, knowing that all of his previous consorts have died horribly. What he doesn't know is that she's agreed to kill him. Also, her handmaiden accompanying her is actually a handmaiden/assassin. Also also, that handmaiden/assassin is her lover. It ultimately ends up being FFM, and it's this very hot, very complex love story with a lot of conflicting loyalties.
